Absolutely fucking wild to me that in certain post canon fics authors will elevate one clan over the other. And I'm not talking about fics that are fun aus exploring different endings to MDZS, I'm talking about fics that directly bash Lotus Pier or the Cloud Recess in favor of saying that the other would protect Wei Wuxian from the big bad cultivation world.

Which doesn't make any sense because the entire POINT of the books (and cql, manhua, donghua, etc) is that the cultivation world is fucked up!! They all fucked up!! If your fav is someone who ISN'T Wei Wuxian the wen renments or mianmian then they are culpable to genocide, which (btw) is fine, you're allowed to have problematic favs but like. Girl what.

Idk it's just WILD to me when someone writes Lan Qiren as defensive of Wei Wuxian (less so when it's Jieng Cheng bc like. At least that makes KINDA sense) when these are characters who, as well as ideologically not even being in the same book as Wei Wuxian, literally labeled him as evil bc of #classism.

look i know i talked about zenstrike last week and im here to do it again. i know what the secret relationship trope is, i know there are so many great fics but like. zenstrike reaches something in my chest and fucking twists it. i read something of theirs for the first time like two years ago and i remember being actually fucking struck dumb on my bed and clutching my phone because the way my stomach churned and my heart pounded and i well and truly FELT every fucking emotion!! when keith nervously pressed his palm to the junction of lance's neck and his breath sharpened mine did too!! when the swirling dread of fear and nerves turned in lances belly it turned in mine too!! idk what it is about zenstrike but they have touched me in a way no other author ever has in my whole life and i cant always read everything they write in one sitting, sometimes im consuming it all in a frenzy and sometimes one fic takes me days. anyway keith loving lance with every goddamn molecule but being physically unable to say it but determined to show it will always make me insane sorry for the goddamn essay

In the bed next to him lies Corporal Marcus Gaines from the 85th Infantry Division, also wounded in action.

But mostly, she finds her father in every least expected place. And learns to make her peace with what that means.

🌺Sands of Time (Turn Backwards) by @brouill3r | brouiller [NR, 22K] 1987 Hawkins Fuller is full of regrets for the life he's lived, though Tim once told him he regrets nothing. Hawk so wishes he could say the same.

In the still night air of a hotel room, clutching a cracked paperweight to his chest like it's carved of the finest gold, Hawk gets his wish.

🌼 Is it over now? by @satelarry | satelarry [M, 43K] Seeing the love of your life walk away without being able to tell him that you love him has to be one of the worst situations a person can go through. But Hawk decided to fulfill Tim's request, knowing it will be the last. What happens when he wakes up, 18 years before, with the knowledge of what's going to happen if he makes the same decisions? Does the ending always stay the same?

Or, the Time Travel AU in which the only thing ruining Hawk's plan is Tim's stubbornness.

9. ...what my ideal endgame for them is.

After a reasonably slow burn, they become a couple at the end of season 5 and officially at the beginning of season 6.

It starts with Hope realizing she's fallen for Lizzie, but she's not pushing it because she feels guilty for what she did to Lizzie when Lizzie confessed to her -- and because her family finally told her what 'siring' meant among vampires.

Hope would think she blew it.

Especially now that MG and Lizzie are dating. And y'know it's nice -- to the outsider it is nice. They don't fight and it's all anyone can reasonably ask for, a nice relationship with hardly any drama.

And Lizzie is trying to make it work. She thinks she owes it to herself and MG to make it work and she and Hope are friends. What more can a girl ask right?

After quite a comedy of errors and pining, all from Hope's point of view, with a few puzzled pensive looks from Lizzie. MG and Lizzie break up. It has nothing to do with Lizzie knowing about Hope's feelings but she suspects, hopes maybe.

But no, Lizzie and MG break up amicably because they both realize -- they're just not working as a couple. They are much better friends.

Meanwhile, as friends and as partners, Lizzie and Hope have been doing really, really well. And in true Mikaelson fashion -- and maybe to Hope's annoyance she's more like her Uncle Elijah than she thought-- because she does random things to make Lizzie happy without even telling her.

Cleo's noticed, of course, and has encouraged Hope to speak up. Hope doesn't want to and she seems to be on a mission to improve herself. Of course, Lizzie finds out about Hope's self-improvement mission, and as a self-proclaimed queen of self-improvement, Lizzie sets out to help her.

TLDR culminates in a major moment-- a battle, or after a battle, or even an afterparty of a battle, Hope and Lizzie end up alone and Hope finally confesses to Lizzie, and Lizzie just smiles at Hope, "Took you long enough, Mikaelson."

And kisses Hope.

11. ...how quickly I started shipping them when I got into the fandom.

Pretty fast tbh-- I'm a sucker for rivals-to-lovers tropes, but also I felt a spark from them on the 4th episode? For someone who hated Hope so much, Lizzie listened really intently and very compassionately when Hope gave her advice about grief.

The scene in season 1 is the first time I low-key shipped Lizzie with Hope.

And to have it called back in season 4????? That Lizzie remembered and internalized what Hope said? How can I not ship them?

Of course, the roadtrip episode leading to Hope and Lizzie finding out that their whole rift was not real after all. And then cascading to the beautiful moment in the dance with Lizzie helping Hope with her anxiety and panic and later Hope doing the same for her.

But the nail in the coffin to my shipping them?

Lizzie remembers Hope in season 2 and waking up, saying: Hope Andrea Mikaelson!

From then on it is a straight shot to Shipsville.

A: Not really sure how to describe my writing style but I try to keep it somewhat informal and punchy - with lots of action. I'm not the best at writing prose and lyrical writing, but I love writing action and plot!

A: My ideas literally come from everywhere - the shower, right before I fall asleep, subplots in other books, prompt generators on tumblr, and real life experiences in college!

Q: When and why did you begin writing fanfiction?

A: I'm sometimes shocked how long ago I started writing. I've been writing in notebooks since I was 8, and then I think I started writing on computers when I was 12/13 ish. I've just loved telling stories and when I realized I could use characters that were already developed, I could just focus on the plot. Now I just love coming up with my own stories!

Q: What’s one thing you’d tell someone who is considering reading one of your fics?

A: If you're looking for plot, this is the place!!! I throw in fluff occasionally but I definitely like more action with a heavy side of romance.

A: Enemies to friends to lovers, which is so broad but there is nothing better than them going from enemies to tentative friends to good friends to in love but not telling each other to an explosion of feelings and love.

A: I love how we just agree on certain things - Snape sucks, James is arrogant but grew up, Lily is bamf and so intelligent, etc.

Since Covid took over our lives a couple of years ago, I refuged to the fanfiction world to escape my non-existent life and I surprised myself by finding shelter in a ship that used to be just a fun idea to me. the more I read about this non-canon couple, the more I fell in love with them. so here's my KurtandSebastian fic list. make sure to check the trigger warnings supplied by the author for each fic before you read it because some of these could be triggering.

1.Glitter and Grease by scifigeek14

by far, this is my favorite dynamic between Kurt and Seb. I love it when Kurt stands up for himself. and I love it when Sebastian is not a knight in shining armor saving the damsel in distress but just simply a companion. someone who loves and is there for you. bonus point: Kurt strip dancing in black leather and lace. the visual it brings me is so aesthetically satisfying.

2. It's Hard To Be The One Who Stays + The Presence of Absence by romantic_drift (part 1 & 2 of Defying Gravity verse)

One of the greatest takes on the soulmate concept. from the moment you meet them to where it takes you. this is the story that made me want to fall in love.

3. Matchstick Dreams by egoistoh

Rom-com but the writer is a genius. never read a better description of these characters before. the characterization is just on spot. it's a fun and heartwarming story too.

4. Breathe Me (3 parts) by cacophonylights

Hot. that's the main quality. Hot as Hell. angsty and sexy.

5. Shape My Edges and Broker My Assent by lilinas

Let's just say it's not the fic category I normally read. but this story is just...Magic. the angst, the hurt, the message, the storytelling, everything about this fic is perfect. I cried a lot reading it and couldn't finish it in a go because it's a traumatic story but the sadness was addictive so I couldn't not finish it as fast as I could. it will live rent-free in my mind for a long time for sure. it's not for everyone though. Mind the TWs.

6. everything this author writes: Lady Divine (DivineLady91)

honestly, I'm not joking. no matter what fandom or which ship, this woman never disappoints. I've read a good amount of her fanfics and Loved them all. to mention some of my KB favorites: Deliver Me 'verse, A Memorable Easter Eve for Kurt Hummel, A Thousand Ways to Fall, Private Dancer, Kurt's Bucket List, When You Come Around, and Twenty Minute Love Affair.

7. Handle Me by flipmeforward

very kinky but actually very cute. Explicit but so romantic. The general sense of acceptance and body respect.

8. Kurt Hummel Has Mail by erisgregory

A cute rom-com, where dumbasses make mistakes but they'll get their happy-ending eventually.

9. This Will Be Our Year by iaminarage

A sports AU, Ice skating to make it better, banter happens, love happens, and you'll have so much fun reading it.

10. A New Way to Fall Apart by thelegendofjenna

This is one of those fics that take place in the summer and proceed to make you feel it's actually summer. There's also this fantastic OC that makes you fall in love with the story ten times more. so much drama, so much friendship, basically teenagers being teenagers.

11. Going Through the Motions by JWMelmoth

This one holds a special place in my heart because: ✨Asexual Character!✨

12. A Little Late by cacophonylights

I'm a sucker for misunderstanding tropes, so...! apart from that this is actually quite lovely. valentine AU.

I didn't think putting A Change in the Weather and A Drop in the Ocean on the list would be necessary. that AU is fandom culture. another famous awesome fic is Barista Confessions that I love a lot.

1. What fic of yours would you recommend to someone who had never read any of your work? (In other words, what do you think is the best introduction to your fics?)

hmmm for someone who got very grumpy when she had to read Freud in undergrad, I write a lot about sex and death, so I will rec something (non-archive-locked) from each category. the one that I'm proudest of is probably and the wall leaned away (or: The Pros and Cons of Tilling) which is gender-swapped modern Montreal-based Les Mis (as well you know lol). It's longer than anything else I've got, though, and there's no death! so here's a death-y one I'm happy with: when nobody is listening (The Old Guard, Nile's brother having a HARD few years).

5. What do you wish someone would ask you about [no more deaths after yours after mine] (Terra Ignota, VERY SPOILERS)? Answer it now!

What was that? I heard you say "what were the other endings you considered and discarded?" :)

this is very hard to answer! I have no idea; i guess i've read some omegaverse stuff because it is e v e r y w h e r e in Robin-focused Batman fic, and I have been pleasantly surprised by some of it? but idk if I can say the whole trope has grown on me.

toooo many things, including two Batman WIPs, a S&D Tier one, a Murderbot fic, a Hikago one, and a Les Mis one!! here's the last couple lines of the S & D tier fic I've been working on~

🥺 is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels?

hmmmm. this one is hard to answer because it's so... like, vague? like i generally write character interactions to spark feelings of some kind, so it's hard to... idk, define any specific ones without a what feeling it sparks. probably some of my most emotional ones involve my Revan and writing her recovery arcs - same with Illitha, and a couple other of my characters who get really fucked up. so i guess the themes of recovery and healing that i really like to write at the end of character arcs tend to hit me the most.

❌ what's a trope you will never write?

a/b/o and mpreg are MAJOR squicks for me. i don't read them and i don't write them. i also am not generally a fan of bodyswapping at all, for reasons i cannot articulate, and i dislike bodysharing unless done in a specific way.

✅ what's something that appears in your fics over and over and over again, even if you don't mean it to?

oh god. uh. well my most used tag is Mutual Pining, and something i often write a lot of, sometimes without meaning to, is symbolism - i know that's vague but it can range from masks to names to lightsabers to clothes to [gestures vaguely]. surprisingly though i haven't actually written much of my favorite tropes? .... i do keep accidentally making my OCs autistic, does that count? OH! themes of healing! i like to destroy my characters emotionally (and sometimes physically too), but i never feel satisfied ending an arc on that note, so there are a lot of redemption arcs after corruption arcs and notes of recovery and healing and moving forward. half of these aren't written but they are In My Head.

🦅 do you outline fics or fly by the seat of your pants?

weird mix of both, tbh. i used to be entirely a pantser, and full on planning has never worked for me, i don't write up entire outlines - but my writing process works best if i have someone to bounce ideas off where i can establish a direction for the fic through conversation and then develop the fic off that as i write. this is actually why my big mdzs fic stalled; despite the fact that i know where i'm going with it, i couldn't find a beta reader to help with fleshing out the details in between the major plot events, and so i've gotten... somewhat stuck.

💔 is there a fic of yours that broke your heart?

yes, but it's old enough i won't rec it here because i'm no longer happy with any of it - but at the time i wrote it it was very, very painful. of my more recent stuff... hm. i was absolutely sobbing while writing up this fic, which the first half of focuses on Ulic and Cay Qel-Droma's big confrontation on Ossus (yes, it says it's a WIP and it is, but the first chapter can be read as a standalone). i've also cried several times over the hp au, knowing where it's going to go and discussing some of the characters in it, but very little of the actual relevant stuff to that has been actually written and posted yet!

Basically, Children's Librarian Luke Skywalker has his day turned upside down when a toddler wanders into the library. Somehow, this ends with him procuring a date

Look, it's a dinluke librarian AU written by a librarian who also just brilliantly merges generations of star wars characters and references into, like, Arizona. This fic has had me smiling so hard, actually laughing out loud, the whole lot. Oh, and it's burning slow... in a really really good way. The pining is top notch. Like this is a WIP that could update a year from now and I'd still pull up to read it. The newest chapter is so good. Open the tab, you'll thank me later.

Like the Dawn by ace_din_djarin @ace-din-djarin | T | Din Djarin/Luke Skywalker | 14k+ | One-Shot In-universe, Soulmate AU Okay okay, this one I feel a bit late to the party for, soulmate AUs are really my guilty pleasure trope, I will read anything that includes the universe saying this pair belongs together. In this one, we're going in with a "first words from your soulmate is written on your skin" setting, and the fic is basically following Din and Luke growing up and pining for the soulmate they still haven't met.... tasty.

If you're looking for something not-too-short-but-not-80k to keep you anticipating these idiots finally meeting and realising that they've been written in the starts, this is the fic for you.

Like Sand Through Fingers by Merrinpippy | T | Din Djarin/Luke Skywalker | 4k+ | One-Shot In-universe, established relationship, hurt/comfort This fic is such a gem. Din and Luke are living on Mandalore here, Luke hasn't ever shown Din his prosthetic hand... until one night he can't sleep and it's time for them to have a talk.

I love the writing style in this so much. It's written from Luke's perspective and you just really get sucked into his feelings, his turmoil, and of course, the very, very sweet ending... the author said hurt and comfort, and oh did they deliver. Rec rec rec!!

Apotheosis by Withercrown @withercrown | Not Rated | Din Djarin & Grogu, Din Djarin/Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi/Maul | 3k+ | Chapter 1/? WIP | In-universe, Adult Grogu, Mystery In a universe where the Force is gone, Grogu, the last living Mandalorian in the Galaxy, traverses dark space to find out what happened 400 years ago when Din Djarin disappeared.

This is probably one of the fics I anticipate the most at the moment. I love a good mystery, and I love the twist of telling the story from an adult Grogu's perspective! The fic reads like a story book to me. It stimulates so many incredible images of the achingly empty, Force-less world in my head, and with Grogu there it sometimes feels like I'm reading what ghibli movie.. feels like? Does that make sense? Anyways, do join me in my anticipation, I can't wait to solve this mystery.

The Ends And The Means by Mariwrongway @mari-wrongway | G | Din Djarin & the Armorer | 1.8k | One-Shot | Part of a series In-universe, Din Djarin-centric This is the first fic in a series that I'm planning to read (apparently a cut off from the main fic?) and I adore it so much. I'm a sucker for fics exploring Din pre-The Mandalorian, since the lack of information lends to a wide variety of interpretations... but this might be my fav yet. Read this to add to your Din & Armorer head canons!

Make Your Words A Weapon by @helloamhere (E, 36K) I recently read this a second time and it’s even better than I remembered. I love everything this author writes. This one just really hit me hard for whatever reason. Maybe it’s the way they explore Louis’ anxiety and coping mechanisms and pain and the way he pushes people away and protects himself, but also wants someone to push back just a bit and love him despite all of that. And the way Harry is the perfect foil for all of it, while also feeling like a fully developed character himself. Yeah, it’s probably all of that. Plus soul marks! (Musician Harry/Music Journalist Louis)

Our Lives, Non Fiction by @indiaalphawhiskey (E, 114K) this is, quite literally, the best fic I’ve read in years. It’s so well written, clever, funny, emotional, and sexy. Its draw you in immediately and you’ll end up falling in love with these characters before you know it. Don’t miss this one. Harry and Louis are both authors.

An Invincible Summer by Brooklyn_Babylon / @twopoppies (E, 45K) this one is mine, I hope you like it:

Never content to stay in one place for long, a few months down south researching for his novel seemed like an idyllic, slow-paced summer to Louis. He wasn’t ready for the blistering heat, the backbreaking work of watermelon picking, or how stifling the attitudes in rural Georgia would feel. And he definitely hadn’t anticipated falling in love with the farmer’s son.

where your lips land by BriaMaria / @briannamarguerite (E, 12K) Ok, I’ve recommended this one a few times and I really do love it. Anyway, I love fics where the two of them are both artists of some sort (Louis is a poet in this one, Harry is a photographer) because it allows for another layer of understanding and connection and support. I particularly love the way Louis’ tattoos are woven into this story with layered meaning. And, as always, just beautiful writing.

you’re writing lines about me by snazzyasalways (T, 4K) This is gorgeously written on that Dreamy, poetic style I happen to love. Louis is a blind poet, Harry is a baker, Harry falls in love with Louis’ words, then with him.

another hazy may by deLILah (M, 41K) Another author who writes great fic after great fic. This one has that dreamy quality I love and there’s also something about it that, at times, reminds me of a little bit of a Raymond Chandler novel. I know that’s weird...but, yeah, it does. Anyway, I love this one. Such a good read.

I would name the stars for you (I would take you there) by orphan_account (M, 91K) This is just beautifully written. Angst. Mutual pining. Dumb boys. Beautiful descriptions of art and creativity and fame and beautiful poetry.

Little Technicolor Things by scary_crow (M, 72K) This is truly one of the most beautiful pieces of writing I have ever read and it is an absolutely travesty that it’s not being talked about every day. This fic is gorgeous and poetic and romantic and heartbreaking and an explosion of metaphoric images and everything I never knew I needed but now that I have it I want to read it over and over and over.

But If This Ends by nonsensedarling / @absoloutenonsense (E, 107K) This author referred to this fic as their “depressed vampire” fic while they were writing, and it is that. But it’s also a unique story with beautifully fleshed out characters, plot twists, and super hot smut. Go check it out! Vampire Harry / Writer Louis

24K Magic by @justalittlelouislove (E, 33K) FINALLY a category in which I can rec this author! I love everything they write, but this was the first one I’d read and it’s just great. Smooth dialogue, sexy smut, great description of character growth…just a really fun fic.

the best part of me (was always you) by @moonshinelouis-archive (E, 6K) Gorgeous writing. The descriptions of heartbreak and missing someone and still loving them were really well done. And I cried. Of course.

'Sup by MediaWhore (GA, 7K) Divorced, awkward Harry pining for silver fox Louis is a trope I never knew I needed, but I love it so much.

I Will Never Rust by stylez (E, 38K) I must have read this at least 5 years ago and I honestly don’t remember details, but my notes say “gorgeous, sad, sexy” so... I’m crossing my fingers that old me knew what she was talking about. It’s frat boy Harry so that could go either way. LOL! Student/Poet Harry.

Loyal Knight and True by rainbowninja167 / (E, 52K) Really original story, mystery and magic, great characterizations. All around a very good read!

Turning Page by purpledaisy (M, 68K) This author does a wonderful job with their characterizations which makes their fics such a pleasure to read. This one really has you rooting for curmudgeonly Louis and skittish/secretive Harry to figure their shit out and fall in love. If you like this one, make time to read this author’s fic, Walk That Mile – it’s one of my all time favorites. Sports journalist Louis.

Black with Autumn Rain by Whimsicule (T, 93K) This author is a favorite. If you like intense, creative stories, with complex characters and tight dialogue, you should read all of their fics. This one has the flavor of a Daphne du Maurier novel – dark, creepy, and moodily romantic. Plus a supernatural edge. It’s so good. Journalist Harry.

That Sounds Fake But Okay by dancingontheceiling (E, 113K) This one has a little bit of everything: Enemies to lovers, fake relationship, famous/not famous... plus, really good writing and some sexy smut scenes. Actor Louis / journalist Harry.

Sing When You're Winning by hazmesentir (NR, 91K) another one I read ages ago, but I always like this author’s writing and the premise of newly out footballer Louis and journalist intern Harry who somehow snags the interview, is such a fun one. And I don’t know why it has an NR rating, there’s plenty of smut.

feel the chemicals burn in my bloodstream by togetherwecouldbealright (M, 123K) I read this one so, so long ago that all I remember is that I loved it, that there’s some really romantic and sweet moments, and that my notes from way back when only say, “OMG this one is so good! 2.4k future fic written in 2011. it’s just a fun little story about human cas travelling with the brothers. i love sam’s voice in this, and the deancas dynamic of being horribly painfully awkward and weird and in love is PERFECT. plus it’s interesting to see a potential future as imagined by someone as season 7 was airing.

okay this a darker fic than i usually like, but it’s so well-done i’m okay with it. 6.9k fic set during season 6 in which cas is captured and tortured by raphael’s angels and dean… does not handle it well. the ending is not necessarily happy but it IS kind of cathartic.

okay this fic was sooo fun. 7k canon divergent season 9 fic where human cas stays in the bunker and on dean’s advice, uses affirmations and conditioning to feel better about his mistakes. strikes a super cool note when it comes to dean and cas’s relationship, and the whole thing was a great twist on all the human cas season 9 fic tropes!

honestly i should just do a blanket rec of all of ellispark’s fics at some point. anyway this is a 20k divorce arc fic in which cas goes back to the cabin he brought kelly after he leaves the bunker. i LOVE the way cas’s perspective is written here--his loneliness and his grief are so palpable. also the ending straight up made me weep.

this 21.6k fic seems like it’s going to be a super cute little au, but there’s way more to the story than that! worth the read just for the twist but it’s also a great depiction of dean and cas’s relationship.

Summary: Draco is a Psyche-Diver, and his newest patient is Auror Potter, who’s been a pathological liar for over a year—and has just tried to violently end his own life.

Notes: The plot alone guarantees inclusion on this list. Probably the most creative fic I’ve ever read, and the twists and turns will keep you guessing.

Summary: Harry is a green-tea addict. Draco stalks him.

Notes: Probably my all-time favourite fic, along with Blue Vase. It’s sparse and minimal and I love that writing style.

Blue Vase (M) by ivyblossom

Summary: Let’s pretend.

Notes: Draco finds an amnesiac Harry and befriends him, pretending they were once lovers. It’s pensive, short, and bittersweet.

The Boy Who Only Lived Twice (E) by lettered

Summary: Harry Potter is an Unspeakable. Draco Malfoy is the wizard who shagged him. Adventure! Intrigue! Secret identities, celebrities, spies! It's all right here, folks.

Notes: Action-heavy fics are damn hard to write, but lettered nails it. The action scenes are breakneck speed, the conversations are threaded with double meaning, and even the silences are tense.

Draco in Darkness (T) by Plumeria47.

Summary: Following an accident in his seventh year, Draco loses his eyesight.

Notes: This is one of the first fics I ever read (when it was over on FF in 2003) so it’s probably here just for nostalgia points alone. I read it when I was a kid and just thought it was a lovely golden fairytale, the best romance I’d ever read in my (very short, thus far) life. I love reading it again, even years later as an adult when I can see the tarnish on it; the things my childhood eyes didn’t notice. I don’t care. It’s my soft and fuzzy comfort fic.

The Flesh is Frail (NC-17) by wildestranger

Summary: None

Notes: Draco has injuries from curses and spells, and Harry keeps him company. Draco is angry; Harry is stubborn. They argue their way into a grudging relationship. It’s a short read and well worth your ten minutes.

Good-bye to Yesterday (NC-17) by furiosity

Summary: Draco felt ready to face even a million years in Azkaban as long as it meant that at the end of it all, he would make Potter pay.

Notes: It’s not a dark fic, but it certainly dips in and out of the shadows. If you like your romance to be sharp as a razor and bitter as black coffee, give it a read.

Hymn to Color (PG) by Lomonaaeren

Summary: Months after Draco cast a curse that took Harry’s eyesight, Harry is still trying to come to terms with it. Draco still wanted forgiveness, which was probably the problem.

Notes: Probably my very inadequate idea of “fluff”. It’s a quiet, introspective fic. Draco and Harry are well-written.

Kings among runaways (PG) by enderxenocide.

Summary: Later, the toast will be slightly overcooked, Draco will burn the eggs, and there will be another fist fight in-between the living room and the front door, but they’ll eat breakfast with second-hand plates and Draco’s great-grandmother’s silverware.

Notes: Dreamy descriptions, abstract scenes, and the characters are lovingly delineated. Beautiful writing.

On Broken Glass (PG-13) by coffeejunkii

Summary: After the final battle, Draco is holding the shards that are left of his and Harry’s life.

Notes: Established relationship. Harry’s forgetful and seems to suffer both short-term and long-term memory loss; Draco stays by his side through six years of post-war amnesia. Very short, just a tiny ficlet. There’s sequels (in bite-size pieces) but I prefer to read the first ficlet and leave it there.

Paper Dolls (M) by cupiscent

Summary: In the final year of the War, Draco gets a letter, makes a choice and pays the price.

Notes: Short, succinct, and packs a punch. No character deaths, in case the summary has you feeling nervous.

Summary: None.

Notes: Dorian Grey, but Drarry. Of course it’s going to be good.

Shattered (NC-17) by femmequixotic

Summary: One damned accident involving one too-lucky curse, and suddenly you'd think he was five again, with their Harry, be carefuls and their quick Levitating charms ready the instant the potion gives way and his rebelling hands lose hold of whatever's in their grasp.

Notes: Draco’s an artist. Harry’s intrigued by his sculptures and paintings.

Snatch (PG-13) by didntyoupotter

Summary: Harry is comatose, Hermione and Ron aren’t much help, and Draco isn’t sure about anything anymore.

Notes: The opening scene fools you into thinking this will be a light read with a streak of good humour. Don’t fall for it. By the third act, you’ll be hanging onto every word and feeling a lot of emotions. Also, back in the day, this was one of the Draco/Harry fics. Everyone knew of it. Pay your respects to your fandom history and read this beloved classic.

The Stages of Acceptance (T) by Lomonaaeren.

Summary: Harry, already happily married to Ginny, receives the news that he's Draco's mate. Law and custom don't give him the option of ignoring the news. The stages of his reaction, one by one.

Notes: This is not a romance, and I love that the author just casually chucks all the Veela tropes in the bin and says “nope”. In Lomonaaeren’s own words, this fic is more practical than romantic. Harry is unfamiliar with the Veela concepts and hates the very idea of being “shackled” to someone; he rejects Draco at once. Draco is miserable and lonely. They do eventually come to understand each other better, but it’s a huge struggle with lots of setbacks. The general air of pessimism and misery does make the small glimpses of compassion and empathy feel so well-earned. I love a fic that rations out its happiness.

The Stately Homes of Wiltshire (E) by waspabi

Summary: Malfoy Manor has mould, dry rot and an infestation of unusually historical poltergeists. Harry Potter is on the case.

Notes: This one needs no introduction. The writing is polished, the characterisation perfect, and the dialogue is fun. I love the humour woven throughout it.

Then Comes a Mist and a Weeping Rain (E) by faithwood.

Summary: It always rains for Draco Malfoy. Metaphorically. And literally. Ever since he had accidentally Conjured a cloud. A cloud that's ever so cross.

Notes: Another one that most of us know. It’s a lighthearted and fun read.

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow (M) by novembersnow

Summary: In the war-torn years after Hogwarts, one man has no knowledge of his yesterdays.

Notes: Another classic back in the feverish heyday of the Harry Potter fandom, when books were still being released and everyone had worked themselves up into a shipping frenzy. And no wonder this fic was an instant hit. Draco has lost all his memories and Harry’s investigating as an Auror, but the longer you read, the more you start questioning everything. Good twists and turns that lead to a tender ending.

Turn by Saras_Girl

Summary: One good turn always deserves another. Apparently.

Notes: An inevitable inclusion on any favourites list. I think my favourite thing about it is the characterisation. Everyone is so well-rounded; the characters are brought to life and feel like old friends. All their habits, styles, mannerisms, even the way they walk or talk. While I love everyone in this fic, I have to admit that Blaise is just amazing. Of all the thousands of Blaises imagined by fanfic writers, I love this one the best. “Old bean” indeed.

Under the Ivy (PG-13) by coffeejunkii

Summary: It is impressive how much you can learn about someone by simply sharing a few rooms. They don’t spend time together, not really, but Harry still knows that Malfoy prefers raspberry jam over strawberry, that he hums along to the Wireless when he thinks no one is around, and that his leg is bothering him more than usual when the temperatures drop below freezing.

Notes: Another old, old favourite of mine. It’s like snuggling into a soft blanket. Remus owns a cottage and Harry moves in after the war. Later, Remus lets a room to Draco, who is an outcast after the war and has limited housing options. Harry isn’t happy at first with the new lodger, but he eventually warms up to Draco. A slow and gentle romance.

Vale Sanare (M) by rurounihime

Summary: Draco’s world gains a new component, just when he thought he’d sorted everything out.

Notes: London nightclubs, one-night-stands, loud music and lonely nights. Draco has seizures due to a curse from the war, and the seizures have led to a fear of intimacy. Short and sweet.

The Way Down (T) by lettered

Summary: Malfoy’s all, “Come out of there,” the way you say to a cat who is badly behaved. And Harry’s all like, “No, what, I’m a hermit! And I have a chest-monster! And I am crazy magically powerful!” and Malfoy’s all, “We all have problems, bub.” (thoughtfully) “You are crazy though. I’ll give you that.”

Notes: I just adore this fic. The fic starts well-grounded, giving you a solid backstory and matter-of-fact context, but as it goes on, it slowly unravels into dreamy scenes, lush settings, and repeated motifs. It’s just such a beautiful story.

When Love beckons to you, follow him (PG-13) by megyal

Summary: Draco wakes up, lost, somewhere in a forest. He has no idea where he is or how he got there. As he is blundering around trying to find his way home, he hears Harry's voice in his head, telling him what to do.

Notes: I generally like my fics to be bittersweet or with a bit of heartache — but this fic is just a little cloud of softness. If you need something light and lovely without being syrupy-sweet, this is a good choice!

The World of the Living (M) by fourth_rose

Summary: A traumatised war hero and a convicted criminal under the roof of an eccentric journalist make for a rather odd ensemble, but Luna has never had a problem with oddities as long as they make sense.

Notes: The story is told from Luna’s perspective, which gives everything a lovely dreamy quality. She takes in a couple of strays after the war — first Harry, who is avoiding his other friends and has quit his Auror job — and then she offers a room to Draco right after his trial. Draco is rude, angry, and ungrateful; Harry is churlish, withdrawn, and moody. Luna doesn’t seem to mind in the slightest, and over the course of the next few months, her house guests slowly warm up to each other.

Voices From the Fog (E) by noeon

Summary: After years of running away, Harry crosses paths with an all-too familiar face and follows him to Amsterdam.

Notes: Harry drifts across Europe, trying to forget the war. He ends up in a woodworking shop in Amsterdam, alongside a moody Draco. Atmospheric settings and solid characterisation.
