The language barrier trope is partly why monster romance is so fun to read. And yes I’m even counting if they technically DO speak the same language, but because they are from vastly different worlds, everything holds different meaning. Communication through action? Cute miscommunications that don’t build to the only catalyst of drama that the book is surviving on? Endearing moments of confusion or dedication to understand what the fuck a <thing> is and why does my human lover need it or want it or ?????? Yes yes yes. Cute, little efforts of love through attempts of understanding. My heart.

Strawberry Lemonade

The first time Scott Keller sees Min Cho, he falls flat on his face on the volleyball court. He can't believe that someone so perfect could exist at the same school as him. Three years of brief glances and bashful smiles later, the stars align and Scott finally has a class with Min. Day by day, Scott and Min grow closer until their friendship leaves the confines of the classroom: to Scott's car on a rainy day, to Min's room to watch TV after school, to late-night text conversations that make Scott resent the need to sleep. Senior year is stressful for Scott, between being the volleyball team captain and preparing his portfolio to apply to art school in San Francisco, all while Min is working on a dance audition for a performing arts school in New York. But, Scott knows that he can take solace with Min—as long as he ignores the mounting pressure that he and Min only have until the end of the year to spend together.

In this sequel to Strawberry Lemonade, the triumph of getting into college dims as distance stretches between Scott and Min. Twenty-five hundred miles separate San Francisco and New York City, but the two-hour time difference doesn't feel like much—until it does. Min told Scott that they couldn't actually be together, but that doesn't stop their feelings from being real. They exist in the nebulous gray area between friends and something more, and every hint of what could've been stings in Scott's chest. Talking to Min every day and getting teased by his San Francisco friends about how "New York Min" is "definitely just your friend, sure" has to be enough to tide Scott over. Two eerie flickers of light shine at you within the darkness of your closet.

Strange events are supposed to happen in your dreams, not just before getting into bed. You pause pulling back your covers and give the lights just enough of your attention for it to speak.

“Come…come here…”

Your bedroom lamps are all off, so everything is shadow, but you could swear that something is shifting inside like waves, urging you closer.

“Come, come…” it says.

You approach hesitantly. Did you fall asleep and not realize? Are you hallucinating? Did a ferbie, long since forgotten, get one last juice from old batteries and spring to life?

Your nightie inches up your thighs as you lower yourself to your heels and peer into the darkness. The odd shapes congeal together and long fingers reach towards you slowly until a large hand fully generates from the darkness.

Amazed, confused, and still not entirely sure you’re awake, you reach a hand towards it as well. Both hands pause an inch away from each other, yours the only one shaking.

Suddenly the hand surges towards you, and your heart leaps to your throat as the palm of it hits yours, and gives you a swift high five.

“Nice,” it says, pulling its hand back into the darkness. “I’ve always wanted to do that.”

You were so startled that you fell on your ass, knees up to your chest. You stare unblinkingly, mouth agape, into your closet, seeing nothing with incredibly mixed feelings.

“Nice undiessss,” it hisses, then the darkness warps into the standard darkness you’re used to - just an empty closet.

Feeling a tad light headed, you say, “Thanks,” then pick yourself up and gently close your closet door.

i'm a published transfem furry author whose newest project, a Patreon serial named STAR//CROSSED, just started its run TODAY!

it's going to be an indefinitely-running series of short stories that act as small chapters, updated monthly! the first one, Prologue 1, just dropped today, and is available for you to read immediately!

STAR//CROSSED takes place in the 2060s, after an alien species, the Pael (pronounced Pah-eel) stumbled upon Earth and revolutionized the entirety of Terran society. Everything changed overnight, from economics to culture to religion. Terrankind was thrown into turmoil, and while eventually things stabilized, and at a far higher standard than previously, the growing pains continue.

In order to further integrate the two societies, some Pael are going to Earth, and some Terrans are going to join the Pael in cooperatives on other planets. Though there may be an undercurrent of tension riding behind every single interaction, it's hoped that in pairing the two peoples together, everyone's natural personalities can lead to greater things in the future.

Funnily enough, Pael are only about a centimeter tall. Makes it all a lot harder - or more fun, depending on your perspective.
