Considering parameters in design:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While thinking of how designers leverage or alleviate design parameters to solve specific problems, I looked back at my sound engineering life to remember sitting at a large Solid State Logic (SSL) board and its flying faders and top-of-the-line audio recording software, configuration, and all the processors you could connect to it to record and create the best quality audio projects. To solve the problem of capturing great audio recordings without being bound to this behemoth of modern audio engineering, designers leveraged the function or parameters of the physical recording equipment and current former recording technology to create new technology that could duplicate the functions of much physical audio hardware while also alleviating parameters to designing a new way of recording included convenience, ease of use, ease of connection to processing equipment, computer storage space, compatibility with music equipment including audio processors, and considering the quality of digital signal flow that would create high-quality sound output. With all the advances in digital recording, for those of us who are a crossover from the analog days of recording, I wonder if there is a such thing as designers going beyond required parameters to evolve the uses of technology for developing recording software that goes way beyond the need of the producer. Well, of course, they do. Most of the designed components of a lot of software will never be utilized by many producers but that doesn't mean others won't use those tools.
In my case, many different recording software had the same primary purpose but how to get to the outcome varies. I can look at software and think "When will I ever need to use half of these functions?" while another producer may think "I'm trying everything and see what happens." Designers create more than enough to give users options. Is that a designer flaw, benefit, or presumption, etc.?
A designer could consider the physical equipment that would be needed to use the software but recording space design would be left to the users of the software. What equipment you can use with the software is of concern to the designers but which pieces of music or audio equipment a producer uses is not.
A basic truth about these parameters for creating a digital audio production tool that could create great quality output is that your sound will never be absolutely perfect but you can achieve the sound you desire with certain software and plugins that help shape your sound. Another truth is designers can design the program based on a producer's needs and even create software that could "correct" audio recording blemishes but the best sound imput is what's going to define how great the output is. Before, while recording music, I had not thought beyond whether or not the Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) could accommodate the parameters of my recording projects and now when I see a DAW, I think of how the design of one component is reliant on the parameters of the component and the many components that make up the whole of the system.

Smaugust Sampler: NIGHT
The Starveil Drake's impeccable camouflage has only one weakness; the excess luminance of the full moon betrays its presence. It is otherwise a remarkably efficient, nearly silent hunter.
The dragon seems incorporeal in parts, but intense light reveals its true, solid form. Scales and all.
This was an idea I really loved. Of course, for Smaugust, I couldn't spend a full on month on it, BUT, I really think this design is cool. I might do a full patience render another time!

Sand Drawings of Vanuatu: A Unique Artistic Legacy
Here is the next in our series about art forms.  This time, we look at sand drawings as an art form. Previously, we looked at many other types of art forms, and you can begin your journey by reading about them here. This is an art form I was totally unaware of, and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed my research to learn about it.  This is such an ancient type of art for the people living on…

CTS A — Week 12 - Compulsory question 3
Tumblr media
A collaborative project I am highly interested in doing is a social media campaign together with the Diploma in Creative Direction for Fashion. It would be about advocating for proper pockets in women’s clothing. In our collaborative campaign, they would spearhead the creative direction for a photoshoot exploring women’s pockets, highlighting the way it is right now versus the way it should and could be. My role would be to produce the deliverables that could visually communicate the campaign’s message, such as posters, publications, and videos. It would hopefully be an eye-opener to the public and inspire concrete change in the fashion industry.
Tumblr media
For my final project, I want to explore the misrepresentation of women in pop culture. Various stereotypical portrayals of women still persist today wherein they exist to be damsels-in-distress, domesticized, objectified, or used to advance a man’s self-development (Walters et al.). I want to foster change in this matter by designing a website similar to the Bechdel test website but encompassing forms of media beyond movies—such as books, comics, video games, etc. This would be accompanied by a publication and a video that would provide a rationale for this advocacy and why there is a need for such a website.
Tumblr media
An organization I would like to collaborate with is UNESCO, particularly in the aspect of their Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Lists. I want to aid in preserving the intangible cultural heritage of Asian countries through creating a documentary series; as well as creating branding and publication materials for the ICH campaign.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If there was one word to describe how I aspire my designs to be, it would be “memorable”. I aim to be a designer and/or illustrator for book covers, posters, and brand materials but I believe that a better placeholder for all these for now is a graphic designer in general. Through CTS A, I believe that I would be equipped with the skills, work ethic, and mindset to think creatively and critically for every project I am faced with, ensuring that each of them is memorable, as I aspire them to be.

Visual Diary 9: Cultural Parameters
Adoption of Cover Crops in Row Crop Farming
When thinking about solutions that need to be aware of their adoption because of cultural practices, I thought about agriculture and cover crops specifically. Agriculture is an industry that is very dictated by historical trends and habit. Conventionally, farmers plant crops in the spring, harvest in the fall, and from fall to spring the fields lay empty.
In the last several years, researchers have found that this fallow period from fall to spring makes the soil more vulnerable to wind and rain erosion. To mitigate this, folks have tried to implement cover crops - a practice to plant something in the fall to provide ground cover from fall to spring.
One tangible parameter around this is cost - it costs money to drive over the field, it costs money to purchase the seeds, and it costs money to harvest the cover crop in the spring.
However, an intangible and heavily cultural parameter around cover cropping is the fact that farmers like to do what they've always done, or like what their parents and grandparents have always done. Introducing change in this environment is very difficult, and changemakers need to get buy-in from those in the community and come with lots of data backing their position to get others to agree.

Do You Feel That?
Idea. So imagine the bats are going to Amity (or a place nearby) to investigate something. A building that had very strange readings, maybe even investigating a case. Probbaly starting in a forest. So this place is haunted naturally, and the ghosts can’t be perceived by the human eye. In this universe, Danny can technically become visible in his ghost form if he concentrates, along with many powerful ghosts, but their default is intangibility and invisibility and it’s just inefficient to use a that much power just to be seen. So most things that happen in Amity are not seen by normal people. Those infected by ectoplasm (the pits and ectoplasm being two separate things in this) are able to see ghosts after enough exposure. So if a hero were to come to Amity, they would see the destruction happening but it would look like some kind of invisible force, and then if they ask why others aren’t panicking, they just say Phantom is taking care of it.
Anyways, so the bats do not know about ghosts and are investigating this house and basically every kind of malevolent spirit you can think of is there and trying to mess with them. After all, even if they can’t see a ghost, that ghost can still affect them. And Phantom sees these idiots getting closer to one of the designated danger zones in his territory. (Or he was visiting a nearby haunted area due to the rising danger level and sees the bats right in the middle of it) The place all natives know to avoid at all costs. So the bats go anyways, completly oblivious to the danger. Danny arrives just in time to stop a ghost who was inches away from digging their claws into Red Robin.
And it goes on with Danny desperately keeping the ghosts back, tackling them, shooting them, growling and hissing and doing everything in his power to shield the oblivious heroes and keep them safe. He can’t even warn them because he’s spending too much power just keeping them alive in the woods. Because of course they decide to investigate the most haunted woods near Amity. Most of these spirits are old, angry, and wild.
And the bats are just casually going about their buisness, discussing the case and the evidence they found.
Danny tackles a ghost wolf to keep them from biting their fangs into Red Hood’s neck.
They follow some tracks.
Danny grabbing the shadowing tendrils attempting to strangle Nightwing.
They even joke around and push each other.
Someone temporarily possessed Red Robin and he starts reaching for a batarang with bloodlust in his eyes, before Danny digs his hands into the bat’s chest and rips out the foreign entity.
There is screaming, snarling, screeches, and lots of punches thrown, all unheard by the bats.
By the end, Danny is panting as they finally made it out of the forest. The bats are tracking a signal, and heading towards an abandoned house. Danny looks up and sees the place absolutly overflowing with spirits. They are crawling up the sides, eyes and teeth and tentacles moving through the wooden boards. Banshees and wraiths, eyeing them through the windows. Skinny limbs with barely any form creaking as their claws try to escape the house and reach towards the group below. Hundreds upon hundreds of spirits all confined to this small hut and ready to tear apart any who enter.
Danny takes one look at them, overhears the bats say that they have to head inside, and decide that he’s not dealing with this today. So he shoots a small laser to cut their power. No signal? No lights? No search.
He can hear the bats complaining but eventually, they have to turn back as they lost the signal and they are unable to continue. And hears them talk about how the place was so weird. Almost like something was watching them.
Phantom sags in relief once they are finally gone.
While they leave, Danny squares his shoulders because he needs to deal with all these ghosts before they get back.
Later, after not finding anything strange about the house or forest or the cause of their case (possibly a death? Or maybe just trying to find information connecting to something else?) and all the previous evidence and traces were gone. So they call in the magic users to use a spell to show the past and figure out what happened. And they can see the group in a sort of 3D holographic image as they investigated. But the spell doesn’t just show them, it shows every being from that time….so the group gets to see just exactly how close they all came to dying.

Danny’s Wayne adoption bait. The guy that owns the bodega knows it. Everyone and their mothers knows it. Danny, on the other hand, had no clue. To be fair, he had just crash landed in this dimension a week ago and his back was still sore from the weird design the car had.
(It’s only three weeks of homelessness later does Danny realize that he crash landed on the Batmobile. Whoops. Oh well. He’ll blame it on Clockwork if the vigilante asks after repair costs.)
(Bruce, on the other hand, is scouring the streets for this kid the car cams caught- oddly static filled footage- because his mind jumped to the worst case scenarios: a suicidal meta or a meta being threatened or a meta in a trafficking scheme or even worse all three at once and Bruce just can’t because there is a child in danger, he doesn’t have time to sleep.)
Danny rubbed at his back, eyes going watery at the memory. Sure, his wounds have healed over by now but the- heh- phantom pain is no joke. He shuddered, huddling closer to his threadbare hoodie. His only saving grace from getting jumped while walking the streets of Gotham at night is his invisibility and intangibility. Also, he’s floating, so “walking” doesn’t apply to him.
He’s gotta check on the kid he saved yesterday from a mugging, so Danny hurried along to the depilated apartment complex the kid was squatting in. Turning visible and tangible as he turns the corner, Danny glanced around for Amy.
“Danny!”
“Hey, kiddo. Doing alright?”
“Yeah! Come meet my gang!”
Danny felt his eyebrows rise to form Jazz’s exasperated look. Ouch. Waving the pain of losing Jazz away, Danny smiled at the excited girl.
“A gang? I wasn’t aware I was being brought to your almighty group.”
“Yeah! Uh, you actually helped a bunch of us so…”
Danny thought back to all those times he punted crooks away from robbing kids and shrugged. Yeah, what Amy said was likely.
“Kay, kiddo.”
She scowled, and Danny didn’t have the heart to tell her it looked more like a pout.
“You’re just a teenager.”
“Well, you’re a just a kid.”
Danny cackled as she chased him down the street, trying to kick his shins.
Life is good, even if he’s homeless and hungry.
——
“Jason.”
“Old man.” Jason mocks back, pausing his tasks. He waits as Bruce struggles to put his thoughts and feelings into words.
“There’s… a meta.”
“In Gotham?” Jason tilts back, hands halfway to his guns as a silent offer. Bruce shakes his head.
“A child. In Crime Alley.”
“In my turf?” Jason’s disquieting demeanor quickly swapped to a protective one.
“Trafficking, I think. Male, black hair…”
“Shit. Get Dickwing back here, he’s good with traumatized kids. I’ll go look for him.” Jason’s already moving, mind filtering through the kids he knows might have information to offer.
Bruce nods, shoulders relaxing. Jason smacks down the lump in his throat at the subtle sing of trust. “I’ll get Oracle and Red Robin on it.”
Jason morphs from Jay to Red Hood in one smooth step, helmet firmly placed on his head. He grunts in agreement, slinging his legs over his motorcycle. He roars off, mind half filled with tearing apart whatever traffickers dared to shit near his territory and the other half filled with worry for this possible kid.
——
Danny, as the Bats become aware of his existence, hands Amy and her kiddie gang a bag of fancy beef jerky.
“Try these with peanut butter, it’s kind of good.”
Amy stares at him, the judgement of an eight year old more piercing than anything he’s ever experienced.
“You’re fucking weird-”
“Language!” He squawks.
“-but sure, whatever you say, boss.”
“Boss?!”
The kids ignores his alarmed face.

Design Parameters for Zoom's Design Leadership Solution
Zoom continues to hold high value and lasting relevance, consistently meeting diverse community needs with its adaptability and evolution. Initially propelled by its user-friendly design, which outpaced platforms like Skype, Zoom’s popularity skyrocketed during COVID-19, transforming remote work and communication. Features such as Live Captioning, AI Companion, Business Services, and the Developer Ecosystem make it an inclusive platform, accessible to users of all ages.
Importantly, Zoom also serves as a vital emotional connector, allowing children to interact with friends, family, and classmates despite physical distances. This capability fosters socialization and support, crucial for their development and well-being. Additionally, Zoom’s development of telemedicine brings critical healthcare to those in remote areas lacking access, bridging significant healthcare gaps globally.
This shift toward virtual connectivity marks an age of Zoom that has reshaped interaction for both personal and professional needs, reducing the need for commuting and supporting sustainability by lowering carbon footprints. With its continued evolution, Zoom remains indispensable, modifying human behavior by making remote communication, work, and healthcare accessible, and it will likely endure well into the future.

Pt 2 forever teen Danny adopts post-JJ Tim. Tim accepts he has a new dad.
[Pt 1: here][pt3: here]
Tim has known Danny a month, and he can say it has had a positive effect on his life. He's super understanding and accepting of all Tim's weird quirks. And when he ran away back to the Bats (which was a train wreck. B and Dick seemed relieved for 2 seconds, then tried to throw him in Arkham. Between him not selling out "Phantom" and still having JJ traits, they found him unacceptable.), Danny let him go, understanding, before accepting Tim back as easy as breathing when he came crawling back. He helps Tim break into Drake Manor directly after, revealing the invisibility and intangibility Tim thought he hallucinated to get clothes, toiletries, his phone (there's 20 missed calls, 5 are Dick, 2 are Bruce, 2 are Barbara, 1 is his parents, and the rest are his school.), his photographs, camera, and the card linked to the allowance his parents send every 2 weeks. Tim took the last thing because he doesn't want Danny to suffer for taking him in and help with expenses, Danny frowns before giving him a lecture about that not being Tim's responsibility when he finds out. Tim still buys groceries and gets them both new laptops when Danny isn't looking.
Danny modifies any electronics to be untraceable, showing Tim the whole process, so that Tim can contact his school with a fake doctor's note, a fake kidnapping story (some thugs heard what Joker tried to do with Robin and tried their own hand at it. Harley squawked about the JJ thing and how a new meta called Phantom killed Mista J, so it's all over the news. (A fake police report magically appears in the GCPD)), and how Tim won't be able to physically be at school for a while and if they could please send his schoolwork over. Tim holds off on contacting his parents, curious to see if they notice anything, and can't find it in himself to be disappointed that they don't (not even when they stopped by the manor a few days ago, they texted him exactly 1 time to scold him about the lack of food in Drake Manor).
When Tim's physical injuries are mostly healed, Danny moves them from the shitty 1 bedroom apartment to an equally shitty 2 bedroom apartment, still in Crime Alley. Tim feels slightly guilty about Danny refusing to let him sleep anywhere other than the bed, taking the floor or couch before he moves a second bed into the new apartment. Tim isn't sure what to do with the level of care Danny showers him with, but he loves it.
Danny, while disapproving and disliking Tim wanting to continue being a vigilante, doesn't actually stop him (something about being a hypocrite if he says no?). Tim designs a new costume since he can't be Robin, and Danny helps create it! Tim isn't sure how Danny got the nearly indestructible materials that need specialized cutting and sewing materials, but it's awesome!
The costume's base is black. Black cargo pants, an armored turtleneck, black domino mask. But he decides that since he unfortunately can't get rid of all his JJ traits (the laughing fits, the scars, his hair is growing green??, the (bipolar depressive/) manic episodes, etc.) and the Bats won't accept him anyways, so why not lean in. Over the black base, he adds a gothic tailcoat vest. It's very dark purple with bright Kelly green lapels and buttons. The lenses on his mask and his combat boots are the same shade of green. He feels like the green ties his new vigilante look to Danny's ghost form. He also finds the whole fit awesome and a giant fuck you to both Papa J and the Bats.
This does lead to his current dilemma. He needs a new name before he debuts his new vigilante identity.
"I refuse to be Joker Junior!" Tim huffs at Danny, who's calmly making dinner.
"Like I've said before, then don't be."
"But what should I call myself? I can't use a bird or bat name either. I've never had to think of a name for if I was an independent before!" Tim flops on the floor. The kitchen and frontroom is basically one room, so Danny can still see him being dramatic without Tim getting underfoot.
"Name yourself a ghostly name."
"Huh?" Tim sits up to look at the slightly blushing man trapped in a child's body.
"I mean, you're already connected to my ghost form, since everyone is going to connect you to your old vigilante identity, so why not pick something ghostly or supernatural." Danny turns to do something Tim can't see, but Tim knows he's just trying to hide how embarrassed he is about sharing the suggestion. "You don't have to. You could pick something more personal, like Shutterbug or Mania or something."
"Huh... That would work. It'd really rub in the Bats' faces that they basically killed 2 Robins." Tim mutters before twisting himself into a pretzel. "Any suggestions?"
"Depends. What do you want people to get from your name? And what annoyed do you want people who know both your IDs to be? Phantom was a literal pun off my lastname."
"How is Phantom a pun off of Kronokori?"
"Kronokori is Jazz's last name, mine's Kronoyios."
"Huh??"
"And those are our lastnames because Clockwork, or I guess Kronos, adopted us. Our original lastname was Fenton."
"You got adopted by a god?"
"Basically, yeah. Don't worry about it. It's probably one of the least weird things to happen during that time, but that's for a different time. What do you want from your name?"
"Uhhh..." Tim takes a moment to really think about it. "It should be something loud and chaotic, but not necessarily good or evil? I don't really care if it would make people eye roll or groan if I share my ID. Maybe something that is angry? I definitely feel angry."
"As you should." Danny affirms and thinks a second. "Wraith? It's a vengeful spirit seen shortly before or after death."
"Mmm... No."
"Sprite? It's a-"
"No way!" Tim pauses and thinks on his violent reaction. "... Sorry.. It just feels childish and like I'm a 2 dimensional game sprite. Not something that can grow with me or demand respect."
"It's fine, Tim." Danny flashes a reassuring smile. "How about Bashee? They scream to warn someone death is near."
"Aren't they all women?"
"Not necessarily. Kinda like selkies, there's more myth about the women, but there's men too." Danny starts plating the food he made. "Apparition? They're closer to an after imagine of the dead."
"But are they loud?"
"Not usually...hmmmm" Danny hands Tim his plate while scrunching his face in thought. "Let's see, Dullahan, Kelpie, Sphinx, Shade- Oh! Oh! I know! Poltergeist! They're loud, chaotic, usually malicious, they bite and scratch and slam things! It also doesn't sound childish, so you can keep it for as long as you need."
Tim munches on his dinner while thinking it over. "I think that would work. Hehe! A Poltergeist under the care of a Phantom."
Danny smiles, "Glad to help, kiddo."
Tim sets his mostly empty plate down and launches himself at Danny. Danny used to the behavior, quickly gets his own plate out of the way and catches him in a hug.
"Thank you, Danny." His tone indicates he's thanking him for more than just the name.
"No problem." Danny kisses the top of Tim's head. They stay like that for a moment before Tim pushes himself up.
"I think I should talk to your sister." He grabs his plate and sits near Danny on the couch. "I don't want someone to trigger me with a dumb comment or something."
"I'll tell her tonight." Danny says, "She's been wanting to meet you. Mostly because she wants to know her new nephew, but also because she likes to psychoanalize hero types. She finds us fascinating, but is still usually chill about it. Unlike when we were teens."
"What happened when you were teens?" Tim asks curiously.
"So Jazz has always wanted to be a therapist, and unfortunately, that means she knew a lot on the topic, but had none of the tact in implementing the knowledge." Danny looks absolutely fond. "She'd corner me to try and force me to talk about my feelings. "You can't keep it all bottled up, Danny." "You're hurting yourself and others by not talking." It was very annoying for an angsty teen to hear. She was right, but her methods needed work. And she's definitely put in the work since then."
"Any chance she's going to be anything like Harley?"
"Not a chance. She hates clowns and isn't one for jokes that aren't well thought out. You have to be really clever to even get a chuckle at a pun." Danny explains, taking their empty plates to wash them. "She isn't opposed to dark humor, but only if she knows the reason for it and knows it's not your only coping skill."
"So you got in trouble with her a lot, didn't you?" Tim teases, knowing Danny still uses dark humor as his main coping mechanism.
"All the time, but I started listening to her advice when I was.. 30? 32? Somewhere in my early 30s." Danny admits. "I got really tired of wanting to die all the time. And her advice has definitely helped minimize the want, unfortunately, mental illness doesn't truly go away."
Tim thinks about that. He knows you can't cure the types of mental illness he has, and Danny has been very open about his own issues, but he can't help his disappointment.
"Hey, on the plus side," Danny speaks up as if sensing Tim's thoughts, sometimes Tim is positive the man can. The man isn't facing him currently, so it's definitely not because Tim was making a face or something. "You're legally a person, so Jazz can get you meds. At least for your bipolar. I know you've been struggling with the whiplash between your extreme emotions."
"That's good..." Tim stares at the back of Danny's head. "You're not legally a person?"
"Nah. In the eyes of the government, I'm dead. It's why I've been hiding out in Gotham. The government has no place here, and as much as I hate the guy, Bats keeps the people hunting me down away." Danny pauses. "You know, I wonder if they think I faded? I haven't made an appearance in nearly 20 years. Then again, Harley snitched to everyone in existence, so I might have to start dodging ghost hunters again. At least the Anti-Ecto Control Acts got repealed, so I won't be taken to a secret government lab to be experimented on again. Shout out to Amity Parkers for clawing their way into office."
"The dad lore of your life is extensive." Tim jokes.
Danny chuckles. "Being a lab accident made ghost child vigilante with a portal to the infinite realms in his basement and ghost hunter parents and the government after you and the other ghosts visiting your town will do that. You'll have your own out of pocket stories to tell your kids one day, well, if you want kids. Otherwise, shocking friends is just as fun. Just imagine telling someone about the last 2 months. "Yeah, hi! My name's Tim! I was the 3rd Robin because a furry couldn't get his act together and then the Joker kidnapped me and I got adopted by the dead guy who showed up and killed him!""
Tim giggles. "I don't sound like that!"
"Maybe, maybe not, but it's still something you could say." Danny grins at him, drying his hands. "Do you need any help with your homework?"
"Yeah, there's a chemistry problem I don't understand-"
Tim loves living with Danny. It's everything a Tim pre-Batman would daydream about. Just a dad taking interest in his life and interests and taking care of him.
