Chapter 17 - Keeping a Careful Distance
“How much did you hear?”
“Enough.” She stuck her needle through the mending, knowing she didn't need the ruse anymore. She glanced back up at him, noting the set of his shoulders, the tightness in his fists. “No believer like a true believer, eh?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, he's human, and Rivaini. Lots of converts up that way, so I hear.”
“Maybe he was born to it,” he shot back, and for a moment it looked like he was pissed that she figured it out, but it passed quickly to something more jovial and almost mocking. Challenging. She grinned at him.
“Maybe. But would he have had so much fervor about it if it was all he'd ever known? In my experience, zealotry is a mark of those trying to impress. Be that their god, or those they feel have strayed. It's a superiority complex, warranted or not. It tends to happen more in people who have chosen a thing rather than were born in it. Like they're still justifying it, maybe even to themselves.”

I’m so sorry but in the nicest way possible do yall actually read books or just read words??? Cause I’ve been seeing that trend of people not understanding how “snarled” and “eyes darkened” and “eyes softened” etc. was used in a book and like…
Genuinely, do yall just not have imagination?? Or not understand figurative language??? Also eyes do literally darken and soften have you not lived a life??? How do you read with no imagination? Is this how you get through so many books in one month - you simply don’t take the time the understand the words as they are read?

Chapter 19 - Slip of the Tongue**
“In here,” he said, waving one hand around to encompass the tent, “you can call me anything you like. Out there...?”
“Out there I wouldn't dream of undermining your authority with your own men,” she interrupted sharply. “I'm not stupid. They bet on us enough as it is.”
He scoffed lightly and scratched his jaw. “Yeah, I should probably put a stop to that.”
“Or give them something else to think about.”
“Eh, it's winter.”
It was her turn to chuckle. “Was that almost an admission of not wanting to stand around in the cold watching them drill? You getting old on me, Bull? What are you now, thirty?”
“Thirty one, and still plenty quick enough to catch you if you want to be a brat.”
“Thought you wanted to go to the marketplace.” Mira grinned into the rim of her mug as she drank the rest.
She caught the gleam in his eye just before he launched himself from his chair.

It legitimately amazes me how the “We can't allow the Holocaust to happen again” crowd can look at something like this and still claim that the Israeli government isn’t committing any war crimes.
Absolutely horrific stuff.
