Breaking down ENTJ stereotypes to uncover the true face of the type pt.1

1. ENTJ individuals are cold and emotionless

Okay, that's by far the most idiotic stereotype of them all and one I haven't been shy to object to in this blog of mine. That's the main reason why I chose to cover it first.

First things first:

No one is emotionless. We all feel things. ENTJs just choose not to show it that much. We are analytical, observant, and what one might call stoic. It's not like there isn't something that has hurt, bothered, or offended me, I just try and find a way for it not to prevent me from doing my day-to-day tasks. No one likes to have to work or communicate with openly emotional messes. Of course, it's a good thing to express yourself... shutting yourself out or pretending everything's fine is an option but never a solution to the issue, and we ENTJs love solutions. They're practically our drive for anything which kind of explains the fact that we're good at finding and establishing them. Being able to control ourselves in tight situations or around certified stress inducers, as I'm keen on calling humans, is essential to us. Anyone can lose their composure, it's always easier to let go than to keep it down. ENTJs understand that and sometimes even unconsciously strive to achieve it, whilst still being on the job to look presentable and socially active. That's where it becomes tricky - to look like you have it together when you don't, to maintain the appearance of the "fine and successful way of life".

Smiling, actively participating in conversations, sharing ideas and opinions, debating when needed, backing down (reluctantly, if it must be somehow defined), taking charge or navigating others while they lead are all part of the things we make ourselves do, to maintain our image of the always prepared person that's capable, well-organised and a tower of strength. To other people, we might seem proud and conceited at first. Sometimes we appear as robots because we take on situations a lot more different than how it's normally expected. We take in shocks well and are durable. Sometimes we think so much, that we forget to react appropriately because we were busy thinking about the possible outcomes. To put it simply, brainstorming is on 24/7. ENTJs are prone to a lot of overthinking. If there are three possible scenarios of how a certain event might go, we come up with four. That's not to say that we're the only ones capable of doing that, a lot of people are overthinkers too, but the main difference between them and us is that their overthinking is derived from possible past experiences (traumas, toxic relationships, anxiety) and ours is more like a personality trait. I can't recall a moment in my life when I wasn't thinking of possible scenarios for all the different kinds of situations I was in. Sometimes it even became too much. I was too aware and that slowed my reaction time to a negative number because my brain was so ahead of the present moment that it already counted the event for passed, finished achieved, you name it - in other words, over.

Being emotionally strict with ourselves isn't an ally to us either. I've had moments in which I've hardly managed to get a word out because I'm so confused about how I feel that my brain just stops working.

When it comes to feeling spectre ENTJs are as well developed as any other person out there (excluding the issues, varying from person to person). However, if we speak about the full emotional spectre, our operating system starts to glitch. Emotions are not unfeelable but are hard to process and when they are hard to process they become a burden. And what do ENTJs do about burdens? Yep, you guessed it right, we remove it.

That's all there is to it. Emotions are not a burden, but when they do appear as one, we push them away for later so we might navigate smoothly throughout our lives. The coldness that's negatively looked upon, is the fruit of the constant thinking of possible outcomes, statistics, and solutions.

There is a chance that you could have met him over one of the games that the both of you shared (much like how he met Lilia, despite not knowing that it was Lilia), as there was really no way to be able to meet him over wise. The man never leaves his room and the moment that he catches word that Ortho is bringing someone over, that door is getting slammed shut and there is no way that it is opening.

Now, after encountering each other in the real world, and though it was a little hard actually getting used to your company, there is a chance that he got used to you a lot faster than he would anyone else given how similar the both of you are both in actions and hobbies.

This is a different but an insghtful way to say don't trust anyone so easily.

I know these guys are the center of attention inevitably so something like this to come from them says A LOT

ISTP - "If you want help, you would ask."

We're so low maintenance, literally only contact each other when necessary. Mad respect. Especially since this is a rule we both apply to e/o and ourselves.

We are not close for obvious reasons. I worked with them once and when my Ni and their Ti connect, their Se and my Te just start getting to work. Best type for trial and error.

I think my friend – the one i confessed to – is an isfp. She’s the mentally-strong, cool and humanitarian type. From what i know of her, most likely a healthy example of her type. She was fine in the moment, though she did jokingly say that her legs felt a bit shaky after hearing my confession, but that’s probably just a joke to lighten the atmosphere or something. Initially, i was the one who felt awkward.

[Part 3 was missing] plus we worked together quite closely. But a short while later, i noticed a strange shift in her. A good example would be posting stuff in a work chat when really it only involves the both of us, ie. we’d generally just text each other. I thought that perhaps she was overthinking certain things, and reasonably so, so i decided to send a clarifying text.

I told her that i only confess when i’m sure – of either success or failure. And that in this case, it was the latter. So she didn’t have to worry about me having continued hope or anything. And therefore it’s not necessary to be on guard around me. And of course i also clarified that if that wasn’t what she was doing, then my bad – just wanted to make sure that everything was in the clear.

Now this wasn’t entirely true. She was actually the only person i’ve been so direct with before, and at that time i was suffering from some ni loop delusions that made me think i may have a chance, but i figured that didn’t matter. I just wanted to set her mind at ease. And stop the ongoing weirdness.

She replied that everything was good, told me to stop apologising, and apologised that she couldn’t reciprocate. So i thought hey that’s great then. Back to normal. But it didn’t go back to normal. She still avoided private communications with me. This pissed me off because i already clarified, and this isn’t like avoiding me in private. We worked together. It was probably weird for the other person in our work chat to be reading stuff that we’d usually not include her (she’s our superior) for.

Before all this, i had been trying to spend more time (going for lunch together) with my friends at work because i was leaving soon, and i was guilty of often turning them down to hang out because i wanted to finish my work asap. After this, we were almost never in the same social setting again. She was never available. And when she absolutely had to be in the same social setting as me, she’d act like nothing was wrong, although she wouldn’t directly speak to me.

I couldn’t understand this and i still can’t. I seldom think about it, but when i do, it still annoys me, which means i’m not over it yet i guess. The thing here that really bugs me is that we had that clarification text exchange. That was both our chances to make known anything that was still an issue. And she’s not the sort to play mind games or anything. So – why? If she was going to feel weird about it, wouldn’t it make sense for it to happen at the start? And then get better after what i told her?

I couldn’t reconcile what had happened with the person i had known, at the time, for close to 5 years. It didn’t add up, so there must be something i was missing. Can’t figure it out though. But at the same time, why am i still hung up on it? It seems like there’s something i’m missing here, but i don’t think i’m seeing it. Every relationship is different but i think there’s several things i’m not getting right, or that i’m not approaching appropriately, or something. This is one example i guess. And i figured i might as well start from it. Like learning from a case study as opposed to an ongoing thing. It’s probably easier. Any advice for me? And thank you.

When you get your hopes up about something, it's only natural to feel disappointed or even hurt when things don't work out. Overthinking or rumination comes when you aren't able to make sense of what happened, so the feelings of hurt/disappointment keep dogging you. The key point you've raised is that you don't understand how things went sideways so unexpectedly.

I'm not her, so I can't tell you what's in her mind. However, I can say that there are reasonable explanations for her behavior. For example:

Remember that Fs are heavily influenced by feelings and they often have trouble sorting them out. When something very unexpected happens, they tend to be in shock for a bit, and then understand their feelings better over time (this is the opposite of how you assume emotions work). Perhaps the more she thought about it, the more uncomfortable she realized she was, and she decided it was best to set stricter boundaries.

Some people react to discomfort by leaning in and ironing it out. Some people react by running away. FPs are known to run away when they don't feel equipped to handle a situation. Her behavior indicates that she's trying to be cool about it but her feelings of discomfort are getting the better of her. Yes, people use jokes to lighten the mood, but they also use jokes to express a truth that they aren't able to say directly.

When this kind of thing happens in the workplace, it can be even more uncomfortable because you don't want to stir up complicated drama or incite rumors and such. Perhaps this was an additional factor in her choice to keep the relationship strictly professional and out in the open for full transparency.

You mentioned that this is a same-sex attraction. I've known plenty of people who claimed to be accepting and even tried their best to be an LGBTQ+ ally, but they didn't react so cool when it came to personal experience of being hit on. Perhaps this also added to her discomfort.

Notice I used the word "perhaps" multiple times. Speculation isn't very helpful because, when you have no way of verifying the truth of the matter, you'll just spin around in circles. Think in circles for too long and you can start to overcomplicate things. But I don't think it's actually very complicated.

I think you did everything correctly. You're right, whether you actually had a chance or deluded yourself isn't the main point. The fact is that you don't know how people really feel until you talk about it, so you did. You approached the situation in a brave, honest, and authentic way. When things didn't go as planned, you tried to maintain open lines of communication in order to ensure there were no hard feelings or lingering weirdness.

The only thing I would point out is that you were a bit dishonest about being cool when you weren't. Fs easily pick up on insincerity, so perhaps she didn't quite believe that the situation was as rosy as you were trying to paint it. I don't know the exact words you used, but it obviously wasn't enough to put her at ease. But I don't know whether there were any combination of words that could've put her at ease.

One thing I always tell people is that you can be the best communicator in the world, but, at the end of the day, you can't control how others respond. For whatever reason, she was not equipped to meet you halfway.

When you confess romantic feelings to someone, you are essentially changing the nature of the relationship. She didn't change things, you did, with your decision to confess. This is not to say that you shouldn't have done it. It is only to say that her behavior changed as the relationship changed. It sounds like you're getting caught up in what the relationship was and expecting her to behave as you want. But you need to respect her feelings and boundaries. Maybe the point you're missing is this: She's not under any obligation to live up to your expectations. If something she's doing doesn't sit well with you at work, you can express your preferences professionally and request that she honor them.

Dating can be rough because it involves facing the risk of failure. It hurts because being rejected may mean there's something wrong with you or your approach, so you reflect on it, as you should. But you shouldn't take rejection personally when you didn't do anything that needs apologizing for. Whenever you take an emotional risk and get declined, lick your wounds for a bit, then dust it off and get yourself ready for the next opportunity.

───  an  only  child  born  to  two  parents  who  cared  more  about  reputation  and  business,  aera  lived  her  entire  life  learning  to  become  the  perfect  wife  &  right  hand  (  business  )  woman.

───  was  sent  to  canada  at  age  6,  living  abroad  until  graduating  high  school.  of  course,  her  presence  was  requested  during  the  summers  to  spend  time  with  her  family  wherever  they  happened  to  vacation,  but  in  reality,  those  trips  were  nothing  more  than  a  test  to  ensure  her  father  was  getting  his  money’s  worth.

───  she  went  back  home  for  university,  getting  into  a  prestigious  art  school  much  to  her  parent’s  dismay  and,  to  the  outside,  aera’s  rebellion  seemed  to  come  from  left  field,  being  a  child  who  seemed  to  never  go  against  the  grain,  but  her  moves  were  always  much  more  calculated.

───  her  second  strike  came  when  she  began  posting  her  first  webtoon  (  titled  #horrorverse,  which  was  a  collection  of  single  chapter  horror  stories.  status:  ongoing  ).  given  her  occasionally  vindictive  nature,  she  didn’t  bother  hiding  the  fact  that  she  was  the  artist  once  it  gained  traction.  in  fact,  she  went  above  &  beyond  to  ensure  the  news,  along  with  her  success,  made  it  to  her  parents.

───  eventually  the  time  came  for  her  engagement  party  and  rather  than  facing  it  the  way  she  should  have,  she  made  the  easier  choice  and  ghosted,  using  her  exhibit  overseas  as  an  excuse.  this  brought  a  lot  of  undesired  media  attention,  of  course,  and  pulled  her  mom  &  dad’s  parenting  skills  into  question,  which  sent  them  through  the  roof.

───  refusing  to  wait  until  she  got  back,  she  was  mid-exhibition  when  she  received  an  email  containing  a  copy  of  the  legal  documents  explaining  that  she  was  no  longer  part  of  the  family  and  her  parents  considered  her  dead  to  them.

𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒏  𝒃𝒊𝒕𝒔

───  because  she’s  a  type  4,  her  entire  personality  is  connected  to  her  emotions.  because  of  this,  her  sense  of  self  is  practically  non-existent  and  it’s  part  of  the  reason  why  she  seems  to  change  into  a  different  person  based  on  whatever  emotion  is  in  the  driver  seat.

───  those  mood  swings  also  have  a  tendency  to  fluctuate  rapidly  depending  on  what  triggers  she’s  exposed  to,  so  don’t  @  her  if  she’s  one  person  one  second,  then  a  completely  different  animal  not  even  two  minutes  later.

───  she  began  going  to  therapy  about  a  year  ago  where  she  was  diagnosed  with  adhd  with  a  larger  emphasis  on  the  impulsive/hyperactive  portion  rather  than  inattentiveness,  but  she  refuses  to  take  medication.

───  she  also  has  borderline  personality  disorder  (  bpd  ),  but  has  not  been  told  she  has  it.

───  for  reference,  the  art  style  of  her  webtoons  is  similar  to  that  of  ecstasy  hearts  (  HERE’S  an  example  but  picture  the  colors  being  a  bit  more  muted  ),  but  the  meat  of  her  stories  are  more  similar  to  scroll  if  you  dare,  bastard,  sweet  home,  #killstagram,  hell  is  other  people,  etc.

───  as  i  said  earlier,  she  does  still  have  one  webtoon  still  ongoing,  which  was  the  first  one  she  started.  i  think  the  majority  of  the  ones  that  she  made  into  series  were  just  continuations  based  on  some  of  the  more  popular  chapters  of  #horrorverse.  but  now  that  she’s  on  the  cruise,  she’s  gone  from  being  someone  who  only  ever  seemed  to  lock  herself  away  in  order  to  draw  to  someone  who  still  draws  a  lot,  but  is  trying  to  focus  more  on  soul  searching.  she  is  gonna  do  a  story  based  on  the  cruise  tho,  but  make  it  ~slasher~.

───  lives  for  a  good  bit  of  gossip  and  tends  to  let  her  imagination  run  rather  than  properly  listen  to  the  truth  about  certain  situations.  has  absolutely  spread  rumors  that  weren’t  true.  but  does  she  do  that  on  purpose  to  be  an  instigator  or  is  it  malice  free?  stay  tuned  to  find  out.

───  a  violent  lil  thing.  jealous.  vindictive.  the  whole  package,  but  those  sides  of  her  only  come  out  for  special  occasions.

───   big  flirt  maybe?  can  she  walk  the  walk  tho,  who  knows!

───  grossly  morbid.  pls  do  tell  her  if  she  makes  you  uncomfortable  bc  when  she  gets  stuck  on  something,  boooooooooooooooy  can  she  go  off  the  deep  end.  and  because  everything  sorta  disappears  when  she  gets  hyperfocused,  she  doesn’t  realise  that  her  interest  in  the  macabre  can  be  off-putting.  (  tho  i’ll  obviously  censor  her  for  the  comfort  of  those  on  the  dash  ).
