What are some other hairstyles you imaging the group in? Any fun ones that Hunter tried (or was forced into by Willow, Amity, etc) as his hair got longer?

first of all I think GUS would be the one with the most hairstyles, hats and drip in general - he loves the human world's culture and their way of using fashion to express themselves uniquely - including hair. I mean, he also has curly hair. So he would have durag styles, various protection styles, twists and braids. And, because his hair curls, he could vary between long and shorter styles.

I also think Gus would have styles that are more typically "feminine" too, as he is very gender-non-conforming in the crew's art of him.

Though, I will say, it works for Gus in-canon that he only keeps one style at first (narratively speaking, not realistic haircare - I think?) because then that would emphasise his time in the human realm later on to be an important developing arc for him (assuming they would actually give him various styles, as indicative of the bits we got of him in episode 1.)

I think, had season 3 happened, we would have gotten a more vibrant Gus. He wants to be an ambassador, he loves the human realm, whom else than GUS to be the one to have an arc where he explores and embodies the full-on SELFEXPRESSION!

Fashion and hair is a way to express the uniqueness of yourself. If Luz' wish as the main character is to be understood, then the (positive) characters around her will (one way or another) embody different lessons for that theme. Gus: Self-expression. (Fashion, style, hair, charisma) Hunter: Identity. (Confidence, self-love, self-respect) Willow: Inner self. (Vulnerability, self-care, self-acceptance) Amity: Outer self. (Presentation of your truth, pride of oneself.) Vee: Voice. (Standing up for yourself, perseverance) Camila: Support. (Union of group, accepting and giving love)

And I think their fashions/hair aka - character designs would reflect these various things!

On a more fun note I think the only reason Hunter could pull off his own unique style is because Gus helps him combine them properly.

Hunter really said dollhouse fairycore and Gus ran with it.

AMITY: Basic styles, probably thinking of her siblings to feel closer to them. Especially Emira's hairstyles. :) I think, because her mom was so controlling of how her hair presented, I think Amity moves away from doing too much with it and rather let it be adventurous and free.

WILLOW: Lots of braids and pigtails. I think she likes to have practical hairstyles as well as more "gentle" ones. The practical ones to reflect her jock-side, and the lose ones to reflect her more gentile and sensitive side! :)

HUNTER: I think just keeps his in a ponytail or (as in the canon) just loose and shaggy without much care. Showing his early stages of being a blank slate. Just let things have it's course to see what "grows" from it, y'know? And then he gets his iconic haircut scene and literally "starts over" with a new arc. :)

I think LUZ just keeps her iconic style that she's had through the show, with the additional tiny low-pinned ponytail that makes her look like a rouge adventurer! Kinda like Amity. I also think Luz hair grows a bit more wavy the longer it gets! :)

VEE is also someone who goes through the most changes, but in her body and face rather than fashion. I think her style would be of the alternative side, perhaps a bit of a concert-kid vibe and basic comfy stuff. She's visually been shown to have the opposite expressions of Luz, quite literally being from opposite realms and having opposite personalities. Where Luz felt hopeful Vee was quick to give up. Our basilisk girl also seem to fit in more with the human realm, enjoying being a normie - after all, her life wasn't normal up till that point. So it makes sense for her to seek it and even find her safety in her own baseline.

overlords edition! includes a rewrite of the vees and a removal of. the gross one. anyways ramble below :3 (Includes the time periods they're based on!) also i have based this on kolkocat's video that i watched a while back

note: I COULDN'T THINK OF ANYTHING FOR CARMILLA FOR HER PRE-DEATH... SO IT'S 'UNKNOWN' FOR NOW. SORRY :( (i'd be happy to brainstorm with ya'll tho)

King Edward Zestial III (1300s) zestial was a paranoid king, in constant fear he would be stabbed in the back or poisoned or strangled in his sleep. this was shown through how he ruled his kingdom, if one was suspected of any sort of disliking against him they would be executed in the town square immediately. this continued for a long time, until he was finally overthrown and killed.

when zestial arrived in hell, it was far more different than it is now. demons like furies were more set on hurting the souls that arrived and extermination day wasn't even a thing.

zestial lived in hell for 700 years and it shows, he's the overlord equivalent of that one school teacher that's way too old yet refuses to retire. he's still paranoid though, velvette loves to mess with him whenever they cross paths.

Carmilla Carmine (????) not much is known about carmilla, she's kept her past life as a secret for a long time now. we may not know anytime soon.

anyways, carmilla is a well known weapon seller across hell. while most weapons are not so different from the ones in the mortal plane. carmilla has taken it upon herself to learn satanic magic from an older demon and to infuse it with the weaponery.

while being rather intimidating, carmilla is not as cold as she seems. she as a soft spot for her adopted daughters and her friends and will do anything to defend them.

Velvette (2010s) professional meanie head, in hell and in life. she was once a popular fashion & makeup content creator, although she couldn't handle critique of her work. she would talk behind people in private group chats, harass 'haters' and basically all the cyberbully examples in a anti-bullying psa.

velvette died in a car crash, not paying attention and doing makeup in the mirror. which is why she has permanent clown makeup (the design also has a double meaning with the clown emoji being used in arguments i think)

in hell she wasn't exactly strong, but after joining vox she became alot more powerful. vox wasn't very convincing during the overlord meetings, but velvette would usually manage to sway half the party over. so velvette did the talking while vox made the tech.

Vox (1980s) vox is a nepo-baby with with a wizard of oz complex, he came from not-so-humble beginnings. he had good friends and manage to climb the coporate ladder fairly quickly (probably because his dad used to be in the company and was a higher up but coughcough-)

it came to a tragic end during a workplace accident, some of the technology being worked weren't working well and vox died of eletric shock.

vox at first wasn't really doing good in hell, it's not exactly a friendly enviorment for beginners. luckily things changed after meeting a certain demon, things got a lot better.

vox began to work on himself and by that i mean heavily modify himself with satanic-magic infused technology to make himself stronger.

vox once again began to rise to the top and managed to get himself among the greats. the overlords, one issue was that they didn't respect him. but after meeting velvette, vox realised that maybe he doesn't have to do the talking at all. so vox stayed behind the scenes while velvette attended the meetings and kept an image for the public.

1. Big-Box / Hypermarket stores can have a grocery section but they sell a lot of other general goods too. If there's equal or more not-food (clothes, electronics, furniture) than food it's probably this.

2. Bulk / Wholesale stores often require memberships and you buy in bulk with limited selection for cheaper prices. These are basically warehouses.

3. Discount Supermarkets in the US, at least, have Aldi's business model stand out as somewhat unique, though I expect it has more competitors in Europe. There's a focus on the cheapest possible prices by emphasizing store-brand items and reducing employee staffing.

4. Large Grocery Chain examples in the USA include Kroger (& Brands), Safeway, Hy-Vee, Publix, etc. They are big enough to cover a whole region instead of just a few states.

5. Large Grocery Chain in Europe would be the supermarket you can reliably find all over your country and possibly neighboring countries. I think Asda in the UK counts? I haven't grocery shopped across Europe for more examples.

6. Same kind of store as above, scaled to your country size. Not gonna pretend I know enough about groceries across the world to give more details.

7. In the US, if it covers a few states but most of the country would have no idea what you're talking about? It counts. Everyone use best judgement on how small they would consider a "local" chain.

8. Another best judgement but I was thinking of brands like Whole Foods Market (pricier, organics) or Trader Joe's (emphasis on marketing private labels but not specifically budget goods).

9. This one is especially for Americans who are immigrants or from immigrant families that shop at specialty stores (ex: Pan-Asian Market) to buy ingredients / brands that the local options don't sell, but I would assume it's internationally applicable.

What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

The Songs We Were Singing has the angstiest moments, but the ending itself is one of the schmaltziest I’ve done. Get a job, cop is probably the only one I’ve done that doesn’t have a happy ending, although I tried to make it more bittersweet than miserable. And it’s still happier than what happened in real life!

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Probably Take a sad song and make it better, where they [spoiler] end up sharing a love nest/shag pad in Scotland, go back to writing together, and raise their blended family together, and then finally get married in their sixties. What more could you want?

Do you get hate on fics?

No, generally people are lovely, but there were some weird fact-checkers on Brother Dearest for some reason - one who incorrectly tried to tell me I’d got their ages wrong (like I hadn’t checked it!) and someone who was put out that I didn’t include Ken Brown at the Casbah. Oh, and I got the bog-standard message from occasional troll Vee, but that just made me feel like I’d finally arrived in the fandom!

Do you write smut?

Reluctantly, yes, but normally only if it’s part of the plot.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of. There was a fic that came out just after Stop all the clocks that had a lot of similarities to certain parts (and I know the author read mine), but they were the types of things you wouldn’t even notice if you weren’t as familiar with it as I was, so I don’t even know if the author realised they were doing it. But people who cry ‘plagiarism!’ generally bug me, especially because we see so many of the same ideas come round all the time in this fandom. And I’ve only been around for 2 years, so I know nothing.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Not until recently, but someone has just started translating The Life of Riley into Russian! I think they might be doing Double Fantasy too. Hit up @pinksodaaa if you want to know more

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No. I tried doing a group fic once, but there were too many cooks, and I’m not really sure how the ‘writing’ part works, especially when you only have contact online. I love chatting with friends about fic though, and would definitely be up for collaborating one day. By which I mean I shout out plot ideas and they write the damn thing.

What's your all-time favorite ship?

I guess I’ll have to say J/P because this is the one I’ve got most heavily involved in, but faves back in the day were Lois & Clark and Father Peter & Assumpta. I guess I’m a sucker for ships involving self-sacrifice for a greater good.

What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

I don’t really have any, although I have snippets that I’m not sure will ever go anywhere. I have half an idea for one set during Anthology, but I’m not sure if there’s enough of a story there. And I once wrote a short BYBANG sequel for @scurator, but I’m not sure I’ll ever let that see the light of day.

What are your writing strengths?

Err, dunno. I’ve written a few multi-chapter plot-based fics now, so I guess those are my speciality. And I like making my soundtrack playlists, but I don’t know if anyone else is that bothered about them (I know that’s not really writing, but it’s part of the whole creative process for me).

What are your writing weaknesses?

Oh, boy, too many to list. Relying too much on gestures and body language. Writing straightforward dialogue without showing what people are feeling. Using the same words and ideas over and over again.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I can’t say I’ve really thought about it. I can’t speak any other languages other than a bit of basic German, so I doubt I’ll be doing it any time soon.

First fandom you wrote for?

First posted was for Sanditon (a period drama that had a terrible ending that needed to be fixed), but at school my friend and I used to write self-insert John (me) and George (her) fics (and by ‘write’ I literally mean we’d write them out on paper)

Favorite fic you've written?

I love all my children in different ways! I probably like the world of Double Fantasy the most, although I don’t think that fic is particularly well written. Tres bien ensemble is always a fave, because that one just appeared fully formed in my head one day. And I do like the ‘enemies’ part of Brother Dearest. RIP, McHarrison, we hardly knew you.

anders/merrill (bonus: anders/merrill/isabela): for all the same reasons i ship fenders (which i would argue is still relatively a popular pair, so not quite rarepair??); they're such good mirrors, they're both encapsulate what the other fears. anders being 100% okay to hurt people despite being a healer vs merrill being a blood mage who has never wanted to hurt anyone is just *chef kiss*. you can take a look at this for more compelling reasons to ship them.

fenris/merrill: for all the same reasons as above. i think if u dont ship each individual LI of the kirkwall polycule w each other, u shouldnt say u ship the kirkwall polycule.

solavelyan / soladaar / soladash / solas x non-lavellan inqs: i still think it should've been a romance option for all inqs tho i suppose they didn't really have the time to develop a non-lavellan route for them, but i love thinking about it, and i love the vibes for it so much. again, i love narrative foils, and i think it's so natural to be drawn to someone who could understand you like that.

alistair x bethany: a not-templar and a not-circle mage, in the wardens together. i think they'd really like each other and have a very interesting kind of energy!!! they've both got these secret bitter/spiteful sides to them, there's a lot of parallels (like alistair thinking warden conscription is a good thing bc it was for him and bethany having v different emotions abt being a warden in general). i've also really enjoyed most of the fics i've read for them.

nathaniel x f!cousland: UNFORTUNATELY THOUGH i dont think i've been able to find the kind of fic i want for them in the tag. i've got too many wips as it is, but maybe one day i'll write the nathaniel/f!cousland fic of my dreams...

So I watched Netflix's Matilda the Musical today...I have...thoughts.

Spoilers ahead...

Ok so firstly the singing, acting, dancing, choreography and costumes are top notch. Not a fault to be had!

Tim Minchin is a great song writer and the tunes are catchy as anything. The actors do an amazing job, especially Aliesha Weir as Matilda and Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull who is obviously having the time of her life playing the villain.

If you are a fan of musicals or Ronald Dahl you will really love this.

HOWEVER

As a child who suffered bullying for a lot of his childhood both from kids and some adults and as someone who didn't like the original because of this I was hesitant to watch the movie but I preserved because of the afore mentioned good points. But I really found it difficult for three reasons:

1. Why doesn't Matilda tell someone?

It is established early on there is at least one adult who Matilda trusts she could tell about her abusive parents and teachers. The librarian Mrs. Phelps played by Sindhu Vee not only offers advice and is genuinely concerned for Matilda's welfare but we see that she would call the police if she thought something was amiss as demonstrated when Matilda was telling part of her story. Matilda actively lies to her yet is willing to do things that would arguably having bigger consequences (such as gluing the hat on her dad). It just doesn't make sense to me. If she didn't do anything I would understand but the show goes out of the way to show how clever this girl is and how she will stand up and be heard

2. Miss Honey and the other teachers are the real villains

Yes Trunchbull is obviously Satan incarnate but that is the character. We need to hate her that much so our hero can shine brighter. The problem is though is by doing this you have made the other teachers including our lovable Miss Honey part of the problem. In one scene Trunchbull is about to do something nasty to a child and the teachers leave the room so they don't see it. They are nameless and very old so we aren't meant to think about them but miss Honey watches it being done. I don't care how scared you are of someone, you can report it to the police. That school alone has so many health and safety violations I'm surprised @osha-official-the-sequel haven't bitten through the clipboard. Miss Honey could have done literally anything. She couldn't go toe to toe with Trunchbull but telling the police, school board, parents, child services, hell even the Mafia (which is established to be in this town) could have yelled better results than asking the kids to keep their head down.

The old say is true: evil triumphs when good men do nothing.

3. What kind of ending for the Trunchbull is that?

So we have established the Trunchbull is a child abuser in every sense of the word. It is also heavily suggested that SHE KILLED PEOPLE. Not too mention most likely commuted vast fraud. She is also very strong and probably has experience using weapons or at least weilding heavy objects as weapons.

So we are all going to believe she runs off because she got a little scared. Give up her house, legacy, job and power?

Look, there are some bullies you give them a talking too, have the punch out, or just outsmart them and they will leave you alone. But they are the rookies, the kinds who aren't truly bad people, just jerks. But the really bullies, the ones like Trunchbull...there is no talking, no beating them once and walking away. No these are the ones you need to put an end to in a more permanent manner. These are the ones you need to break bones or make it so messing with you will literally cause more trouble. These are the ones where jail or a bullet is sometimes the solution. These are the ones who even if they know doing this thing will most likely cause them pain will STILL do it because in their mind hurting you is more important than future consequences.

Guess which category Miss Trunchbull falls into.

She would be back within 24 hours with murder in her heart and as established she probably would follow through.

So why do they give her this run away ending. Its bullshit and wrong and honestly what pissed me off the most. I know it's a kids film but there still could have been ways to show it. Maybe she runs off a cliff? Maybe she runs into the mob and goes for a drive? Maybe she runs into the woods and some wolves follow after her? Get creative people!!

And yes I know it's based on Dahl's work and this is how the story goes but there is even a song about changing your own story and if the character can be self aware maybe the writers could have too?

So TL:DR

Matilda the Musical is a great musical

Acting, singing and dancing top notch

This film will trigger you if you suffered from abuse or bullying

If you give this film more than a moments thought you will find the plot problematic

Fuck bullies and abusers and thank any God you believe in that I was never granted psychic powers because you would have been wearing your organs on the outside.

blog update/review!

HEY, lovely followers of mine, I’m back! Sorry about my hiatus, I’ll do a follow-up post soon <3 I’m doing a review of this super cool free app and website called Tee! 

Tee is the one-size-fits-all application and website that caters to as many social media forms as possible. You guys have probably seen them floating around because they’re getting pretty popular!

I decided to do an unsponsored, unbiased review and overview so that you guys could consider checking them out :> !! I’ve had issues with getting images to post on my blog lately so I can’t show you direct screenshots but I’m sure a quick Google search would bring them up.

The homepage of the site is pretty cool, it’s not super crowded but it’s a good place to start out~ ! Before you even make an account you can either look at the two main galleries, the first one is dedicated to the three most popular posts, videos, and/or images of the day, so you can immediately check out what’s buzzing! The second one picks out three completely random posts, videos, and/or images too, and it changes every time you come back to the homepage :D !!

The bottom of the homepage has all of the guides to each of Tee’s modes, which include Tee Anon, Tee Blogs, Tee Bytes, Tee Cams, Tee Clips and Tee Vee, but I’ll go over each one just for you guys >:3 

For those of us who were on the old Internet, Tee Anon is like a throwback to those old message boards! You just start a thread with an image and just talk about anything with anyone else, completely anonymous! You don’t even need a Tee account to do this (though I think there is a post limit amount but idk) Anon mode has roughly only 50 threads up at all times before it gets archived :( but, Tee already stated that if it became popular enough it would be upgraded as necessary. You can even search through the archive and the threads for what you want to talk about. 

Tee Blog allows you to customize your own blog space just like my blog! You can post images, words, sound clips, videos, pretty much whatever! You can even make your blog play music if you want! However, your future blogs will need to be coded by you or someone else. There is no pre-built blog maker as of this post, however, Tee announced plans to create one to make it easier for those with no experience in blog making. 

Again though that’s only a feature for those of us with Tee accounts (which by the way are free!) Without an account, you can view blogs, search for other blogs, and search specific tags to see posts that you like. But with a Tee account, you’re also able to directly message blogs, share stuff directly from someone else's blog, and search for specific tags (Did I mention every post can end with a tag?!) With an account, blog mode also gives you a separate homepage that shows posts from blogs or tags you follow. Again though, you need to make an account to get the fun bits! I’m going to be having a blog there too soon, so make sure you guys look for me under LaceyBlueReviewer <3

You guys remember Twitter? I mean, X? Oopsie. Anyway, Tee has a better version of that too! It’s called Tee Bytes. There’s a 140-character limit and you can share and follow other people and tags on Tee Bytes similar to Tee Blogs. As of right now only supports written posts! No photos >:( As before, with an account, you can directly message someone’s Byte account, follow accounts, follow tags, and make posts on your account, duh. Without one you can only view accounts, tags, and posts… Hmm, maybe there’s a pattern here?

I honestly think it’s pretty cool that Tee isn’t demanding an account out of us, though, what’s the harm in having one account for pretty much everything that I need? Oh, did I mention that your accounts between modes aren’t automatically linked? Unless you opt to link your accounts with each other, people won’t automatically be able to check your Byte account and know that you’re posting about sad kitties and cute boys on your Blog account. This applies to a few other modes too which I’ll specify later on <3

The next mode is Tee Cams!!!!!!!!!! Photos, photos, photos!!!!!!!! Unlike Instagram and X, images are shown as their actual file size (none of that icky Insta crop- unless if you opt for cropped mode!) You can comment on photos too but you can’t directly message someone unless they linked their Byte, Blog, Clip, or Vee account to their Cam account. 

Remember, you can’t post without an account~

Tee Clips has only short videos JUST like TikTok! Videos have to be 8 minutes or less if you choose to post some. Right now, they have a Vine Challenge to see if people could create six-second clips in honor of Vine! I think there’s even a prize for the most popular one <3. You can’t make these videos without accounts either though so get one and join the challenge! There are two “feeds” that can be both displayed at once or can be collapsed for just one feed! There’s a trending feed and then there’s your recommended feed, which includes tags you follow, people you follow, and other things that Clips recommends based on what you watch. You can also directly message people here too C: Search works the same as Tee Blog’s.

Tee Clip’s counterpart is Tee Vee which has long videos! And guess, what… There are no ads BEFORE videos on Tee Vee. There’s a maximum length of 10 hours, but that can be upgraded if you make a one-time payment each time you want to upgrade for videos past that. You can directly message other users on Tee Vee, plus comment on videos, but it’s not as common in my experience. Vee also has a mini homepage with trending videos before you start to follow other Vee accounts. Search works the same as Tee Blog’s. Your home screen here is mostly dedicated to actually uploading videos and the search bar, though you can tab into watching mode and get infinite recommendations. 

Essentially, all your accounts can be linked together so that when you check out someone’s blog, you can also look at their Vee acc! It’s called Profile Linking and it’s really useful! You can also link your preferred tags and users (if they exist on the other platforms), so that when you go into Vee mode, you can look at tags related to what you follow on your Bytes account. The last thing I wanted to talk about is the last thing on this review because, well, no one likes it when money gets involved. As I mentioned, yes Tee Vee mode offers an Upgrade Video Length feature, but there are a few other paid-for features. There’s a Support Tee feature that supports Tee using minimal to no ads. As of writing this, the only ads are promotional accounts that have to pay extra to sponsor products directly within a specific mode. Ship questions. All the Love for Vee and Donovan, please!

Thank you for the ask, hon! (I know you’re not supposed to choose between your children but these are probably my favorites.) Veerla and Donovan are poly and in a triad with Kaidan so I’m going to answer for the three of them together. 

1) Who said “I love you” first?

Donovan said it to Veerla first. Kaidan said it to Donovan and Veerla first.

2) What are their primary love languages?

Veerla: acts of service, physical touch. Donovan: quality time, acts of service. Kaidan: physical touch, quality time.

3) How often do they cuddle/engage in PDA?

All the time, though most of it is very casual. They hold hands, sit together on the couch while reading reports, put their hands on each other’s arm/back/shoulder when they walk past each other, etc. Kaidan especially LOVES physical contact and is always looking to cuddle. 

4) What are their favorite things to do together?

Music is really important for all of them. Kaidan plays piano, Donovan plays both guitar and violin, and Vee loves listening. (She also has a nice, though untrained voice, and will sing along with them.) Training is also important to all of them (physical, biotics, shooting), so they often do those together.

5) Who’s better at comforting the other?

Veerla. Of the three of them, she is the best at recognizing what the others need and giving it to them. Donovan and Kaidan both lean toward fixing and Donovan especially has a hard time when he can’t DO something.

6) Who’s more protective?

Donovan but it’s a close call. They’re also all very practical it often depends on who is most knowledgeable/experienced/equipped to deal with the situation at hand.

7) Do they prefer verbal or physical affection?

Physical affection for all three but Kaidan is the only one of three who would say that physical affection is most important for him. For Veerla and Donovan actions are more important. Veerla also really ascribes to love through knowing.

8) What are some songs that apply to their relationship, in-universe or otherwise?

Oh my gosh, songs are my favorite! I have a million songs for them but tried not to include TOO many of them.

See You Again/Love Me Like You Do/Sugar Acoustic Mash-up (Megan Davies Cover): This song my (Bard’s) song for them. The three different parts and the way they mesh together always gets me into a mindset for them.

No Judgement (Niall Horan): This is one of their favorite things about each other. Each of them have made mistakes and the other two love them and accept them all the same.

Next To Me (Emeli Sandé): Because Donovan and Kaidan are with their girl.

She’s With Me (High Valley): Because Veerla is with her boys.

I Choose You (Sara Barellis): All of these three believe that love is a choice and they continue to choose each other every time.

Flashlight (Bri Heart Cover ft. Knots): The original version of this song is not one that I have any strong feelings for but this cover is another one I always associate with them.

9) What kind of nicknames do they call each other?

(Not counting “Vee” for Veerla, which everyone uses...) Donovan is the only one of them who really uses nicknames. He calls Veerla “A rún” or “A rúnsearc” (“my secret” and “my secret love”) and Kaidan  “A stór” or “A stór mo chroí” (“my treasure” and “my heart’s treasure”). Also, because of their history, Donovan is the ONLY person Kaidan will let call him “K.”

Fun fact: When Donovan and Veerla got together they set “honey” as a distress code between them and share it with Kaidan when he joins them.

Roleswap AU 3 - Witch!Ben

Ok I started writing this months ago and if I had more then it’s forgotten now, but I already had this typed up about Ben’s backstory in the AU so just have this and maybe we can all figure out what the others are up to together idk.

Okay so Ben is the Witch with the seeing spirits and all, I think it takes a while for him to figure out this isn’t normal though because his eyesight is awful and he doesn’t get glasses until he’s like seven or something so it was generally a big blur before that. Obviously it’s opposite to canon, he’s got a very strong connection to spirits so I think his issue is a lack of control. He tries to do magic copying the twins but is too strong - maybe he produces highly destructive buggerups, and influences people’s souls around him, like he unconsciously grips them when he’s angry, makes them sad or scared when he is. And his family are scared of what he can do and even though he tries he keeps being dangerous. They don’t want to take him to a university or anything because it would be a big embarrassment for the family, but eventually hear about Acedia asking for someone like that, so when he’s like eleven or twelve they hand him over to her. Nobody except his parents know about it, I think they tell everyone including his siblings and Vee he died? (brutal ik ;_; ) 

Anyway so Ben is trapped by Acedia and terrified and knows he’s been abandoned by his family, and he’s there for a good few years while Acedia works on the bindings and all. The difference is he’s older than Mal was, and with a knowledge of magic already, and decides he wants to know what she’s working on. Acedia never tells him exactly what it’s all for but gradually allows him more access to books and allows him to practice and he studies incredibly hard. Acedia’s never kind to him and he remains afraid but gets used to it, most of his resentment is on the family that left him here. He’s almost willing to help Acedia with whatever it is she’s doing but I think when they’re nearly there he works out what she’s doing and uses his improved control of magic to burn her notes and escape.

Now free, Ben travels, unwilling to return to the family that abandoned him but not sure what to do yet either. He’s bad with people in that he’s very blunt and just doesn’t care at all what they think, it’s sort of a grim determination thousand-yard stare kind of vibe. I actually think him and Mal travelling together (however that happens, I’ve no idea, maybe Mal’s involved in his escape? Like he’s a handyman or something in town rather than a vagrant and is like ‘you good in there??’ when fixing something for Acedia and helps him get out? Idk I’m thinking on the fly here) anyway I’m not sure they’re the best pair just because can you imagine any situation where Mal is consistently the most emotionally developed and sensible. I’ll probably come back to this.

Meanwhile, Vee never believed he died and becomes a hunter in order to secretly search for him, claiming it’s for the glory and all but really chasing down every rumour and bit of information she can put together. 

Ok so that’s what I’ve got so far, like I said it’s only really Ben’s backstory that’s settled for this AU. I’m not sure it would follow the comic pattern of the two of them ending up working in Widdershins with someone after all, I’ll try brainstorm more ideas for the rest but also please add on if you would like :)

1) keep to the heroes characters only. as in, characters who originated in heroes, not just “characters that are in heroes”. like, you can’t ask me for, say, a leo/takumi fic. i say this sort of thing every time and yet every time people don’t listen and ask me for stuff involving non-heroes characters so i have to get more and more specific every time

that being said, there are still heroes characters i won’t write about. i don’t wanna write about gustav, hel, or surtr, nor do i really want to write about loki or thorr (though we don’t know much about thorr yet anyway). the book 4 ocs are also currently off the table, but that’s just for now and will probably change as we learn more about them

however, i may still be willing to write fics where characters i don’t want to write about are mentioned. like, say, if you wanted a fic where eir, sharena, and laevatein all bond over having shitty parents, then yeah, i think i could do something like that

in addition i’ll probably be sort of picky about any potential commissions involving lif or thrasir. it’s not gonna be a no all the time, but like... essentially, anything that would require me to refer to them as alfonse and veronica is off the table. yes i know they’re older versions of those two, but also being a Trans Person, the name someone chooses is important to me and i’d be uncomfortable deadnaming them, especially when thrasir explicitly says not to call her veronica anymore. no i don’t care that intsys does it too, it’s still bad to me and i will not

2) i won’t write incest, i won’t write ships involving veronica or ylgr seeing as they’re Babies, and i won’t write ships involving henriette. i also won’t write any m/f ships that don’t involve the summoner. sorry. no m/f ships in feh really interest me enough to write, even if i’m being paid

i’ll still write platonic stuff or familial stuff involving characters i won’t write ship fic for, though, and i AM very willing to write polyships (including vees, which is where one person is dating two other people but those two aren’t involved with each other) or ships that are weird but otherwise stick to my rules.

3) like already implied, i’ll write m/f ships if they involve the summoner. there’s only two exceptions to that, which are i won’t write f!summoner/bruno or m!summoner/sharena. sorry again, i just headcanon both of them as gay and really REALLY don’t wanna write anything straight involving them. other characters are still fine though.

her life changed pretty drastically after that ! the hwang name was all over the news, their family was pretty much disgraced by high society in nyc, not a very fun time for anyone but especially not for violet’s mom 

after her dad got arrested violet was uhh high key furious with him for ruining their lives with his greed and she wanted nothing to do with him, but her mom couldnt let go. she was still defending him, spending the money they had left on lawyers which included the money the family had set aside for violet’s trust fund that she would have had access to once she was 18 </3

 so her plans for college changed pretty drastically JSDBJWBDJW ( goodbye ivy league education ) she actually ended up getting into the university of toronto for visual studies on an academic scholarship 

so she made the big move all on her own....moved into a tiny dorm...and vowed to reinvent herself. she didnt wanna be labeled as the daughter of a white collar criminal anymore so she just made it a point not to talk to much abt her past to anyone 

her struggles as someone who grew up with $$$$ turning into a broke college student made for some embarrassing but funny moments <3 luckily though everyone else had their own struggles so no one found it suspicious JSBDJWBDJ

when love alarm launched three years ago, violet had just started college so it was really the Big thing anyone and everyone was talking about. since she’d never been a fan of other dating apps, she wasn’t gonna download it but her roommate at the time convinced her ! at first it was fun, just something she didnt take too seriously 

fast forward to graduation and she’s snagged a job as an art director for a little local museum, doing freelance art directing on the side to help pay the bills. low and behold one day a photographer hires her to be the art director to a shoot they’re doing for a badge club member who was in a very high profile and public relationship at the time

violet ended up working with that photographer and badge club member a handful of times, enough for her to catch fee-🤢 catch feelin-🤢 i cant even say it .. she’d never rung anyone’s love alarm before, so of course her first time had to be with someone who was already taken </3 safe to say she ... freaked out 

she was embarrassed above all else, but also heartbroken bc in her head like ... why would someone who literally is part of an exclusive club based on ppl ringing their love alarm care that she rung theirs ? she didnt think it’d be a big deal to them the way it was to her ( but also didn’t stick around long enough to find out jsxbsjbdjw ) 

when she was offered the block she didn’t hesitate to use it figuring it’s better if no one knows her romantic feelings ever again like that /: she’d delete the app but a part of her still likes knowing there are ppl out there who DO like her like that so ... Rip truly

she comes across as ... kind of a bitch SDJBJWBJWBDW it’s truly not on purpose she just has a pretty serious resting expression most of the time ( so she looks mad or annoyed even when she isn’t ) and she’s pretty difficult to get to know ? not to mention the fact that no one has ever witnessed her ring someone’s love alarm .. so all that combined just makes it easy to assume she’s some sort of ice queen when that’s far from the truth /: 

violet really isn’t one to open up too deep to people, but that’s got a lot to do with the past she’s kind of running away from ! so if you’re her friend most of the stuff you know about her is probably surface stuff, but when she’s close to someone she can make that fact hard to realize ? she just has a way with making the people in her life feel important so it’s easy not to be focused on how much you know about her 

never bothers to correct the people that misjudge her. if you don’t like her, if you want to make up assumptions and rumors about her, go ahead like violet really won’t stop you which can sometimes make meeting new people difficult </3 if you’ve seen the dating class webdrama chuu was in she’s kinda like oh seyoung’s chara joowon 🤧

if she wants to, though, she’s pretty good at getting people to like her / trust her ! she does this a lot in professional situations, which is why she’s been doing so well as an art director so far despite being so young 

she’s also very loyal to her friends ! if you can’t ask for extra sauces at mcdonald’s....if you can’t make a phone call to your credit card company explaining that a $3,000 charge to starbucks wasn’t you.....she’s your girl <3 since she’s relatively not bothered by the way people see her ( unless it has to do with her past ) she’s usually the one speaking up if someone she cares about can’t 

after the ... incident ... JSDBWJDBWJ she’s really not a fan of the badge club and everything it stands for ): BUT she continues to do art directing work for a lot of the members when they do photoshoots, or instagram campaigns, or if they have a pop up shop, etc. it’s good money and she needs every penny considering she’s living without support from her family 

cannot cook to save her life so she’s always eating out .. this really is why she’s taking those more high profile jobs she can’t budget .. but it’s better, safety wise at least, that she continues wasting her money on takeout aha <3 

pretends she’s not a romantic and is all about the ~casual flings~ but really she’s just afraid of serious feelings and the idea of a serious relationship ... it’s the trauma 😔 constantly jokes shes gonna bring the tinder whore era back JWDBWJBDJW she is sick of this true love nonsense ! ( the irony of this url ahaha... ) 

she’s the most social after a few drinks, since drunk her isn’t burdened by a mind that overthinks literally everything the way she is sober. if you don’t supervise her though she can get pretty carried away and probably get into some kind of trouble so she’s definitely not the person you want to be in charge on a night out !

really wants a dog but doesn’t think she’s cut out to be a pet parent it feels just as scary as the idea of having an actual kid so ... BDWBDJW if you have a pet ? she’s gonna be living vicariously through you <3

people she art directs for !! i imagine she’s got a pretty long list of employers ( from badge club members to regular folk  🤧 ) so it would be cool to have people who hire her for stuff, or who collaborate with her for artistic endeavors since i’ve noticed we have a lot of artsy muses <3

Context: I received a free eARC through NetGalley from the publishers at Blue Moon and DigiWriting. When the book was slated for re-writes, I agreed to read and review it a second time. It's sort of exciting to be involved in the process, even in such a small way.

About: When Nora and her boyfriend, Andrew, are attacked by a monster on prom night, only Nora survives. The attack triggers episodes of what her psychiatrist calls paramnesia, a confusion of reality with a dream world. Except Nora’s dream world seems all too real. Suddenly, she can see ghosts everywhere, including Andrew’s. The creature that attacked them, a soul-eating monster called a Revenant stuck halfway between living and dead, is planning to finish what she started.

Thoughts: It was a struggle to get through this a second time. Part of the problem is that I think I'm well outside the target audience now, and that matters more in some YA books than it does in others. It matters here. The beginning is still rough, and the first several chapters are rushed and flimsy as Nora meets Andrew, they fall in love (immediately, it seems), and go to prom. I’m not much for romance in the first place, and theirs is too much sweet and not enough substance. The novel would have been fine skipping all of this and beginning with the car accident, since these events and the weak characterization involved don’t add a lot to the rest of the novel.

The writing leaves something to be desired, and it would do better with half the adjectives and a quarter of the moralizing. I don’t think even younger readers need the messages about appreciating life, friends, and family to be so spelled out for them. There’s also a tendency to tell rather than show, especially in the beginning, but this gets better as the novel goes on. Nora's best friend, Vee, is a vast improvement on the second round, as she goes from a walking cliche to a decent friend with more intellect. I never found the Revanant frightening; she's condescending and evil without motivation (that's just what evil things do). Her chapters don’t usually bring anything necessary to the main plot, since the Others never really feature in Nora’s story.

Once Wilkinson actually gets into his plot, it’s a lot of fun though. There are a few too many ghost characters to keep track of, but for the most part, they’re funny, cute, and heart-warming. (I love Peepers and his search for his sweet Adelaide.) I was reminded a lot of The Frighteners; it has that sort of vibe to it, and the supernatural world-building is similar. While I was annoyed by Nora and Andrew’s insta-love, Wilkinson does a nice job leaving her feelings with another character open-ended. Neither of them are rushed into another relationship, and it felt a lot more realistic.

Overall, it seemed like this second copy was an attempt to make the novel more palatable for younger readers, and I think that's an appropriate goal for the material. The comedy is high on toilet humor, teasing Nora about her snoring, and cheesy running in-jokes that weren't funny the first time. The one sex scene is edited out, Vee becomes more of a role model, and if Wilkinson were to remove the swearing, it would probably work fine as a middle grade novel. While the story ends on a bit of an R.L. Stine-like twist, I probably won’t continue with the series.

One day or day one?

A new day, a new life. And it couldn’t be more true for me, starting with in this new life, I had to be awake really early.

“You didn’t sleep well last night, did you, Lady Phanie?” asked the Lady who was helping me to zip up my dress, when she saw me yawning through the big mirror in front of us. I wished I was good with names; I barely could memorize 34 last week and now I had three new ones and equally important. My maids.

Christina? Romina? Loretta? … no, wait Loretta is my mother’s name… ugh, is too early.

“Sorry, Rebecca. I think I only had 3 hours of sleep, last night.”

“Mhmm, that’s what I thought. Lily went to the kitchen to get you an energizing juice; you have to be fully recovered for your interview with the prince” she brushed the dress with her hands, even when it was looking perfect already.

After a long time trying to cover the black rings around my eyes, I finally made it to the dining room. There were a few ladies sitting by the large tables, already. I noticed the small cardboard signs on the table indicating our place. I stood there hesitating for a moment, looking around the enormous room. I decided to go left, hoping to see my name written somewhere in that table, so I won’t need to look at the other one. “Lady Stephanie” read the cardboard almost at the end of it, I had “Lady Camille” at my left and “Lady Jordan” at my right. I felt proud of myself when my memory brought back the pictures of a lady with a military uniform and another one with a very pale skin. I spotted Victoria looking for her sit and I found myself praying again. I barely recognize her with her new short  hair, but the annoyed gesture she made when she saw me as she took her sit across Camille’s, was unmistakable. I sighed resigned.

When the room was finally full a beautiful, elegant woman, who I identify as Collette Bennett, crossed the room walking between the two large tables, and found her place standing where we all could see her. She introduce herself as our etiquette instructor to proceed later with a short demonstration of the correct way to address the royals.

“After you've learned your greetings, we will get into the dining portion. Now, let us begin.” she said. And that’s when the fight to keep my eyes open, started. Apparently the energizing juice wasn’t that effective. Every movement I made felt heavy as if I was trapped inside a big jello. I decided to get some fresh air before my head ended up leaning on Camille Marshall’s shoulder.

“Excuse me” I said as I stood

I felt like if all the eyes were on me as I walked my way out the room, fanning my face with a hand, my heels making noise against the floor, but probably no one was really paying attention to me. The guards standing by the doors, opened them for me.

Outside the room, I found Jace at the hallway. I have seen his pictures thousands of times at the magazines, always by Nate’s side.

“The slacker” Loretta used to call him, every time we see him on TV.

I had always envy his friendship with Nate, wondering if I would ever found a real, loyal friend.

“Oh, hey... Jace, right?”

“Yeah... are you okay?”

“Yes, I’m alright, thanks, it’s just... “ I hesitated to tell the truth, after all, her mom was the one giving the lessons “...I was falling asleep back there …” I closed my eyes hard for a few seconds hoping I hadn’t offended him. “I needed some air”

He started laughing “How could you fall asleep? Forks are so cool!” he smiled and I relaxed  “And napkins, don't get me started on napkins”

I scoffed “Sure they are! … Actually I feel kind of sorry for you, missing all the fun. I’m Stephanie, by the way” I extended my hand to greet him. The handshake was firm but friendly, as when a strong guy tries to be delicate.

“I'm Jace, but you know that. So what do you do?”

“I’m…” I scratched the back of my head “I’m a model. What do you do?” I asked him quickly before he could ask more details about it.

“Jump off cliffs”

I opened my eyes wide with surprise “Sounds exciting, fun and ... like suicide!” I joked teasing him.

“I jump into water” He rolled his eyes but didn’t look annoyed.

“Okay, okay. Sounds kind of interesting, to be honest, but I have to confess I would be terrified to do something like that” I had never felt like a extreme sports kind of girl, but I did admire the people brave enough to practice them.

“Most people are” Jace laughed. Well, at least I had made something laugh with my lack of bravery and adventurous spirit.

“I wish I wasn’t, tho. I bet the feeling up there most be incredible” I said imagining the feeling of freedom at it’s finest.

“The views are the best part” Even when he was only talking about it, his eyes bright with emotion. I almost felt jealous of his free-spirited attitude and bravery.  

“Oh! I could draw nice landscapes from up there! ... yep, you have convinced me, I will try to climb a cliff  some day, not sure how I’m going to get down, tho” I regret the last words I said. I had started thinking out loud, making no sense; which I had to stop before embarrassing myself even more. Clearly my energy was back.

“The only way down is to jump” He laughed again.

I sighed “I will meditate on that, then… I probably should get back, I don’t want to be scolded by your mom for missing some important information about forks and napkins” I said smirking

“Hurry go before you miss out on the wonderfulness of sitting with your hands in your lap”

“See you around”

When the lessons were finally over, we had to wait for our turn to meet Nate in private. I use the waiting time to ask Marshall the things that I had missed when I was gone.

We were introducing ourselves when I saw paper ball landing on the table. I looked around looking for its source when I listened to Victoria’s annoyed voice “Excuse you!”

I turned to see her and I realized she was shouting at Venus, who was sitting at the table behind her. I draw the paper ball trajectory in my head and that’s when I understood the ball had had bounced on Victoria’s head before landing on the table.

“Jesus…” Marshall muttered and I could listened some of the other selected around, whispering things.

“You are excused” Vee replied to Victoria smirking. I tried to suppress a laugh covering my mouth, making a weird sound in the process, when Marshall glare at me I felt embarrassed, her look could make anyone do an involuntary military salute. I clear my throat and paused to collect myself.

I thought the problem was going to end up there but they continued shouting to each other. I looked down putting a hand on my forehead “I can’t believe they are doing this” I muttered. It just seemed unbelievable that they were starting a fight in front of all the selected and right after an etiquette lesson.

And Victoria said I was the one needing some of those lessons. Ha!

Aada leaned around Jordan to face me “Did they not hear what Lady Collette said?

“Says the one who acts like she’s a famous superstar” I heard Victoria said when I payed attention at the problematic girls’ words, again

Aada raised her voice at them “I can tell you what you’re both acting like and it’s not ladies. You’re behaving like absolute children”. Maybe her intention was to calm things down, but she achieved the opposite

“Someone's got to stop this before this gets crazy” Marshall said, almost whispering. The fight continueD and now Aada was included in it. It was like a snowball, instead of stopping it was becoming a monster. “Good Lord!” she continued, facing me, this time.

I opened my eyes wide “Should we do something or…?”

“I will” Marshall looked determined to talk but Aada continued shouting

I had never liked Victoria, she had always approached to me at parties and fashion events to mock me and make me feel miserable saying nonsense things, but I never imagined she was dumb enough to fight someone else in the first day of the selection; if she had lost control more than one person would had gone down with her and I wasn’t sure if Aada deserved that, yet.  

Suddenly I found myself reaching for her hand to get her attention “Hey! Don’t act stupid!” I told her in a low but firm voice. I was waiting for her to start shouting at me but instead she smiled.

“I won't. Someone needs to calm Venus down though. I'm not the right person for that.” I was both, relieved that things won’t get any further and extremely confused by her reaction. I probably would believe her if I hadn’t seen her hypocrisy in action before.

A loud voice full of authority took me out of my inner thoughts “There isn't gonna be any fighting, for anyone” Marshall said to put some order once and for all.

Vee turned to face Eloise and exchanged some words with her, then turned back to Victoria “I’m sorry” she mumbled as she stood to leave the room abruptly. I followed her and Aada with my eyes as they left the room.

Everyone remain quiet for some minutes before returning to normal. When my name was called for me to meet Prince Nate I wasn’t even focused, the fight back there had had distracted me. Before entering the room I brushed my dress with my hands.

Breathe in, breathe out.

The room was smaller than the dinning room, but still had an impotent size, there was a ceiling to floor sized opened window, at the end of it, that let the fresh air fill the room. I walked towards the man sitting on one of the small couches that together formed a  complete set. When he listened to the sound of my steps he stood up.

“Hello Lady Stephanie, I'm Prince Nate” He made a small bow in front of me. I wonder if he had rehearsed those first words minutes before the interviews started.

I bowed back “Hello, nice to finally see you, your highness”

“And you too, please sit, how has your stay been?” He waited for me to sit down and then he sitted back in his place.

I was close enough to perceive his smell, I couldn’t decipher the exact scent but it was something sweet combined with dark wood. “Great! You have a great home, here and the staff is really nice. How are you feeling, today? I mean after all the interviews”

“Tired but happy.” He replied laughing

His adorable laughed made me smile “I’m glad it hasn’t been too overwhelming”

“Yeah me too. What do you like to do in your free time”

I was glad that he was more interested in what I loved to do than in my job. “I love to draw! I find it very relaxing... art always is. It’s also nice to get out of the routine doing it. I have read that you enjoy to play the guitar, right?”

“What do you like to draw exactly? And yes I do.”

My fingers started playing with the dress almost unconsciously.  “I try to do any kind of sceneries but I’m better at portraits. I would love to hear you play sometime. Are you good at it? I asked interested in his special talent.

He laughed again. “I sure hope so, my mom thinks I'm amazing, just like most moms” I can’t help but thinking how my mom always have hated my love for art, according to her, it distracted me from my real duty.

I laughed with Nate, shaking the thought away. “I believe her, but still want to listen to you play. Are you up to it?”

“Yeah totally! I'm sorry but I still have so many girls to meet, this conversation has been wonderful” He said standing up.

I hoped he really meant that.

“Sure!” I stood up too and bowed, again. “See you soon”

I fight the urge to look back as I walked outside the room; my heart beating a little bit faster than normal. This small conversation with him was enough to reaffirm the impression I had of him before. He was really handsome, nice, formal, funny, eloquent and the owner of one of the cutest smiles.

 Walking back to the dining room when the rest of the girls were waiting for their own private meeting with Nate, made me remember there were 34 reasons why I should take things slow, 34 reasons why to be more careful.

The Bentley Mulliner Bacalar Is a Uniquely Styled $1.9 Million Topless Beauty

This will probably tell you everything you need to know about the 2021 Bentley Mulliner Bacalar: The wood on the dash is 5,000 years old. The Bacalar is of the most exclusive and expensive cars to be launched this year; only 12 will be made, each priced at just over $1.9 million (before options and taxes). This is a Bentley for the person who has everything—a moon rock paperweight, a Romain Jerome Steampunk watch, one of John Lennon’s guitars, and someone who thinks a Pagani Huayra Roadster BC is perhaps just a bit too loud and gaudy.

The Bacalar is essentially a Bentley Continental GT Convertible with a unique exterior and interior hand-crafted by Bentley Mulliner, the company’s storied coachbuilding division. Mechanically, not much has been changed. The W-12 under the Bacalar’s pricey hood has been tweaked to deliver 650 hp and 667 lb-ft of torque—increases of 24 hp and 3 lb-ft over the regular Conti GT engine. And the rear track has been widened 0.8 inch to give the car a more muscular stance. But that’s about it.

And, truth be told, that won’t bother a single Bacalar customer. The 12-cylinder Conti GT Convertible’s oily bits will deliver all the effortless 200-mph performance and refined dynamics they’ll ever need. What’s important about the Bacalar is the driveway theater; the stories behind the extraordinary attention to detail lavished on everything you can see and touch.

Though a roofless barchetta, the Bacalar shares its design DNA with the Bentley EXP 100 GT coupe concept revealed in July 2019 to celebrate Bentley’s 100th anniversary. The forms and details have been toned down, and made less exaggerated, but the essential EXP 100 GT design language remains. Up front is a similarly dramatic interpretation of the Bentley grille, unique oval headlights with light bars that extend into the front fender, and a front splitter that looks as if supported by buttresses under the lights that extend outwards to the front corners of the car. At the rear, the unique taillights sit in a deeply notched vee section above a fascia designed to visually enhance the car’s width. The Bacalar rolls on bespoke 22-inch alloy wheels.

The only exterior components the Bacalar shares with the Continental GT Convertible are the door handles because they contain the hardware for the keyless entry system. The rear clamshell and top deck are aluminum, and the doors and fenders are made from carbon fiber. Mulliner, which traces its origins to a saddlery business founded in the 1500s, became a coachbuilder in the 1760s. It has been a part of Bentley since 1959, using both traditional hand-crafting methods and state-of-the-moment techniques such as 3D-printing to create the Bacalar’s arresting exterior.

Although its essential hardware and switchgear are shared with the Continental GT, a form line that stretches forward along the doors, across the lower edge of the dash, and back along a revised center console, gives the Bacalar interior a totally different aesthetic. Detail changes include a unique knurled pattern on the air vents, and a unique quilt pattern on the seats that, according to Bentley, requires precisely 148,199 stitches per seat to complete. Making the Bacalar a two-seater with no roof (engineering a special soft top for just 12 cars would have been prohibitively expensive) freed up space behind the seats for two specially designed bags by Italian luxury luggage maker Schedoni.

Mentioning sustainability and ethical sourcing in the same press release as a $1.9 million car with a 650-hp, 12-cylinder engine and no roof sounds a bit like greenwash for one-percenters with private jets. Nevertheless, Bentley says the paint on the Bacalar features a pigment made from rice husk ash, using a process that turns it into 90 percent pure silicon dioxide platelets, which are then coated in iron oxide, and that this could reduce landfill waste. That 5,000-year-old wood? It’s from naturally fallen trees that have been preserved in peat bogs, lakes, and rivers in the Fenlands of East Anglia, England, and has been carefully air dried.

With wealthy customers increasingly willing to spend more than $1 million on a special automobile, coach-built luxury cars—common in the 1920s and ‘30s—are making a comeback in the 21st century. Lamborghini and Bugatti have each made small numbers of cars with unique bodywork in the past few years, as has Rolls-Royce. The Bacalar—the name is taken from a region in Mexico famous for its strikingly clear blue and turquoise waters—showcases Bentley’s intention to move into the area with its storied Mulliner brand.
