I have no clue lol <- yes of course we do!!!!!!!! i still intend to finish all the incomplete fics i have on ao3.. but i did recently decide to stop dragging the dead corpse of this childhood best friends to celebrity lovers au onto every WIP list.. its a fun concept with a few scenes i love but it has no narrative arc and i am officially laying her to rest

i'm working on it but i have a problem with trying to rework and rework something instead of getting rid of it completely or starting over.

my favorite version of it is when the second (or third, fourth, etc) language is in its proper characters, adds extra flavor to a dialogue exchange, aaand the jist of the exchange can be understood without translation. soo if a reader speaks said language, or they're willing to source a translation (by themselves or otherwise provided by the author) they get extra seasoning. but i think all versions are nice.

sarah mentioned going to an aquarium with the kids at dinner which prompts bucky to ask what that is

Sambucky fake dating with maximum fluff and minimal angst. Sam asks if bucky wants anything for the holidays and buckys like ‘haha yeah to date you’ and sam is so excited about it so the next day hes just being the most sappy romantic boyfriend all over bucky all day while bucky is internally losing his shit because he thinks its some kind of holiday gag and sams just pretending to date him. Theyre doing the cutest most hallmark holiday things together and sams having the time of his life and bucky thinks hes gonna die. This absolute nonsense lasts all of one whole day until sam leans in for a kiss after dessert and bucky flips the fuck out with the ol ‘i cant do this! i care about you too much! this is real for me, i cant pretend like this!’ and sams like ‘wait,,, i thought you asked me out? you mean this wasnt real??’ and sams starting to look hurt while bucky is fumbling for words because he cant believe this is happening till finally he bursts out ‘WAIT SAM CAN WE GO BACK TO FIVE MINUTES AGO WHEN I WAS YOUR REAL BOYFRIEND IM IN LOVE WITH YOU SAM’ and they have a beautiful holidays and sam teases bucky relentlessly for being such a fool.

OK SO, i’ve been thinking (never a good thing) abt how the new avengers/sam leading the avengers could subtly hint at sambucky (because thats how my brain works) and i’ve got 3 scenarios. they’re all end credit scenes because im built like that

Sam is sitting on a couch as the news play and its talking abt the new avengers or if Sam is gonna lead the new avengers. So sam turns to someone (i wonder who it could be) and says “do you wanna lead some avengers?” and the person is revealed to be BUCKY (who woulda thought) and Bucky says “alone? hell no. with you? hell yeah/always (i cant deside which i like better hdushdsu).  and Sam smiles SO YEAH

the next one is basically that ending scene of aou but its sam and bucky walking out AND TORRES FLIES INTO IT LIKE SAM DID AND SAMS SO PROUD OF HIM HFUHUIGFUYH. anyway. so sam and bucky just exchange a look like the one at the end of endgame and it cuts to some other avengers looking at each other like seriously. yeah

this one is kind like #2 but whatever. its basically sam and bucky walking down the hall together (maybe they can hold hands, maybe sam has an arm around bucky, who knows) ANYWAY and maria hill greets them both and is like “captain wilson, sergeant wilson. your team is waiting.” and the scene cuts to the new avengers. i guess this could be like the scene before before the second option idk

Here's a little sambucky drabble loosely based on an interaction I had with my friend the other day. This is my first attempt at anything even approaching fanfiction so read at your own risk.

Sam is in love with Bucky Barnes. Bucky is standing in the kitchen of their shared apartment leaning back against the counter. He's staring at the tile floor. Gears in his head grinding somethings over. He might be thinking about the flag smashers, or Karli, or the mission from three days ago that went well but just barely. Or he could be thinking about breakfast. Sunlight pours in the window bathing him in gold. And hes so beautiful like this, Sam can hardly breath. His hair has grown out a little bit. Not like it was before. He just hasn't cut it in a while and it makes him look soft. His pajamas make him look soft too. Like Sam could pull him into his arms and kiss the gold off his face and Bucky would laugh and wrap his arms around Sam like he'd never let go. But he can't. At least not yet so Sam leans back on the counter next to Bucky.

"Hey," Bucky says.

"Hey," says Sam.

And then they're quite again. But Sam wants. He wants Bucky. He wants to hold him. He wants to reach out and cup Bucky's face in his hands and brush his thumbs across his cheeks. He wants to take Bucky's hands and kiss his palms, his knuckles, the pads of his finger's. He wants to tell him i love you i love you i love you.

But he cant at least not yet.

They've gotten more comfortable touching each other. They had too working together like they do. Friendly shoulder pats and fistbumps. Hugs too. Hugs to say hello, hugs to say goodbye, hugs to say oh god you nearly died but you didnt you're ok and I'm ok and I'm never ever letting you go. Sam always lets him go in the end.

So armed with their history Sam leans into Bucky pressing their sides together as if he were tired and wanted a shoulder to sleep on. And its so good to have Bucky's warmth against his side.

Until Bucky grunts out "don't touch me."

Sam immediately moved away

Its said without venom. Bucky said "dont touch me" like he would say "the milks out of date" a simple fact.

Bucky has said that to people before but not to Sam. Never to Sam. It catches him off guard. At first Sam wasn't sure if it was genuine. They messed with each other sometimes, all the time. Intentionally annoying each other, making fun of each other, maybe Bucky is just being a little shit.

Most of the time Sam pushes his feelings for Bucky, his feelings for anything really, back into the dark recsess of his mind. He has other things to worry about. But this morning he let himself feel. Really feel how much he loved loved Bucky and that made him feel vulnerable.

He gave Bucky a look as if to say please not now if you're being stubborn just for the sake of it please not now. Bucky did not return the look.

He just asked "Do you want breakfast?"

"Yeah man, breakfast sounds good." Sam gave him a little smile.

Ok this is fine. Sam assured himself. We're not there yet and thats fine. He wasn't hurt exactly. He knew Bucky had trauma he knew he had trauma Sam had just hoped that he was the exception. Still he was disappointed. He couldn't help but think it indicated a gap between how he felt about Bucky and how Bucky felt about him. But it was fine. Bucky was making egg sandwiches and it was fine.

Things were normal between them after that. They talked pleasantly over breakfast. Sam did the dishes while Bucky had another cup of coffee. Sam had asked him once why he drank coffee when he couldn't feel the effects of caffeine. Bucky had said that it made him feel normal. He'd said that it was a simple pleasure easily obtained almost anywhere. He told Sam that when he escaped Hydra and found himself free(ish) for the first time in 70 years, he went out and got a cup of coffee.

Sam had nowhere to be that day so after dishes, and shower, and chores he went to see Sarah and the kids. He'd invited Bucky but Bucky had a therapy session to go to. It was probably for the best. A little space would do him good. Maybe after a little time with AJ and Cass, Sam could stop internally screaming every time Bucky looked at him.

Like always, it was nice to see Sarah. They joked and picked on each other he asked her about the boat, how the repairs were holding up. He asked the kids how school was going. They told him they liked art class and they didnt like english cause the teacher was mean and they asked if Sam could come to the school and make her put their seats next to each other again. Sam sadly informed them that he could not. Sarah made dinner and they ate together. Sam did the dishes while Sarah told him about Cass's friends and the next door neighbor and the owner of the convenience store down the street. Afterwords sam sat on the couch while Sarah got AJ and Cass tucked into bed. Sam thought about Bucky. Bucky who had shown up unannounced with a super suit and a helping hand. Bucky who slept on this very couch instead of curled up on the floor. Bucky who didn't want to be touched.

He let the disappointment wash over him again. He wanted to be with Bucky so badly the minor rejection still bothered him. Had Bucky seen through him? Had he realized what Sam wanted and decided he wanted no part of it? Maybe he didnt realize at all maybe he just didn't feel comfortable around Sam the way Sam did around him. Well ok no more touching Bucky thats fine. Maybe down the road things will be different.

But Bucky had made him breakfast. Well he made himself breakfast but he didnt need to make enough for Sam but he had anyway. Food in the Wilson household was always an expression of love. He couldn't help but feel sentimental anytime someone cooked for him including Bucky. And Bucky always had his back on missions which is in his job description but still they worked well together. And Bucky got him that book he'd been wanting. Sam mentioned once that his favorite author had published another book but they were already sold out. The next day Bucky presented him with a hardcover copy. Even now Sam has no idea how he got it. Maybe... maybe Bucky does care for him. Sam thought back over their time together and the casual touches they've shared. The way Bucky always seemed to lean into it even if he rarely initiated. The way Bucky had said "don't touch me," so calmly this morning. And suddenly Sam was greatful. Greatful Bucky had told him he didn't want to be touched instead of just going with it. Just because he wasn't feeling it this morning doesn't mean he had never wanted it or would never want it in the future. Now Sam regreted giving Bucky a look this morning. He hoped Bucky had not interpreted it as anger or annoyance. Next time Sam promised himself, he would carry on as if nothing happened. He wanted Bucky to be comfortable enforcing his boundaries. God he really loved Bucky.

The sound of the stairs creaking under Sarah's feet pulled Sam from his thoughts.

"I better get going" sam told her

"Alright, drive safe. Say hi to Bucky for me"

"I will. Thanks for dinner,"

He pulled her into a hug and she handed him a plastic container of leftovers.

Sam drove home the radio played softly somehow every song reminded him of Bucky. He let his mind wander enjoying the empty road and soft yellow glow of the street lights.

The apartment was dark when he got home. He heard the quiet sounds of the TV and smelled popcorn. He kicked of his shoes and put his food in the fridge. Bucky was watching star wars.

"Hey man, catching up on pop culture?" Sam asked plopping down next to Bucky. Careful to keep his distance without being weird about it.

"No ive seen this already but there's a new one coming out i gotta watch them all again i dont remember half the shit that happened."

"What your cyborg brain getting rusty?" Sam ribbed

Bucky just glared at him

"Sarah made dinner there's some left for you in the fridge."

"Thanks" Bucky smiled at him and Sam thought, not for the first time, that he would do anything for that smile.

I love you i love you i love you

"No problem" sam said

As Obi Wan Kenobi insists these are not the droids they're looking for Bucky leans his head on Sam's shoulder.

hc that zemo is a deep sleeper and will starfish in any bed he feels comfortable in, cue him starfishing on a bed during a mission and whoever finds him thinks is way too endearing (he hates that he is referred to as "adorable")

God I love this, yes!! Zemo, who has been deprived of all human comforts for way too long, he slowly begins to sleep less and less tangled up and rolled into a ball until he takes up a double bed entirely. Like you said,once he relaxes he is a heavy sleeper so he doesn't notice people entering the room. When the sambucky finds him the first time they cant help but laugh, because this criminal who is on the raft starfishes like a kid in a big bed, feet poking out of the covers and everything.

Zemo hates that they laugh, obviously, he is a feared criminal and special ops agent, he is not adorable! He is deadly, thank you very much.

But oh he is adorable! yknow how your cheeks get a little rosy if you are having a good sleep? When Zemo starfishes he gets all rosy cheeked and wakes up with lided eyes. Its downright illegal how cute he looks.

Sam has to fight the urge to squeeze his cheeks because his southern instincts make him wanna do it, and just coo at how cute he is and also he has this weird sense of pride that Zemo feels comfortable around them.

Bucky laughs until it dawns on him Zemo trusts them, then he is quiet for a while because it's one thing that Sam trusts him, but Zemo is an entirely different thing. He still gets the protective instinct flaring up. But, after the novelty of the trust dissipates he becomes a downright menace, pulling on Zemo's leg and causing a small scuffle before the sun is even up in the sky.

Sam hates them for the noise so early, but its so fun to see someone grapple with Bucky when there's no stakes at hand (or no more stakes than who makes breakfast)

Zemo tries to pretend he doesn't starfish, but he just can't deny he sleeps waaay better when he starfishes.

(It becomes an inconvenience when he finally moves into sambucky's bed if that's your flavor of things)

he does not perfect the clearly impossible task of making toast until he is 17 and rhodey buys him a cake to celebrate the momentous occasion even though tony went though 528 toasters

and also paper planes by jon bellion but specifically for after rhodey tells tony he’s gonna join the air force and tony is worried but doesnt know how to show it and they have like a chill night in and all tony can think about is how stupid he is and how he’s such a coward because he cant get himself to tell rhodey that hi!! i love u!! and im scared to lose u and that you’ll get hurt and maybe die or smth!!

when rhodey finds out about how tony was raised (going with mcu, where tony wasnt physically abused but more emotionally neglected and ignored by howard and always talked down to and compared to others and wasnt treated like he was worthy and never was told he was loved and everything like that) he gets PISSED. like he is MONUMENTALLY angry. and it takes YEARS for him to find out about this too. and it actually puts a bit of a strain on their friendship for awhile when they meet too

like rhodey knows about the starks obviously and he assumes tony is going to be this obnoxious arrogant rich boy asshole and is so not looking forward to being roommates but he was raised to have an open mind and give everyone a chance, but tony was raised to be wary of everyone and keep his walls up and his emotions in shackles because whatever he shows can be used against him, so they clash, you know? they dont fight or anything but theres tension bc it isnt right and they dont get each other.

rhodey tries to be nice and tony doesnt understand nice because his only example of nice is jarvis and his mom and even then his mom and jarvis are always off with his dad so he barely sees them so its still rare for him to experience the nice of them so he doesnt know how to be around someone nice all the time, and so he gets defensive and thinks about how howard drilled it into him to be wary and he thinks maybe rhodey isnt ACTUALLY nice but someone PRETENDING to be

and rhodey starts to feel justified in assuming the worst about tony stark because tony is all cold and distant and rude and is about to stop the keeping an open mind thing about a month into their first year but then he comes back to their dorm early from class one day and tony doesnt come in so rhodey is just standing there and watches for a minute as tony sits there staring down at his twenty sixth attempt at a letter he wants to send his mom becauss he knows his mom likes letters even though he could just call but they havent really called him (howards fault but he’s fourteen still and its hard to rationalize that howards busy life and controlling thumb extends past his son) and rhodey is just confused because tony just suddenly sighs and sniffles a bit and murmurs “this is so stupid” and crumbles up the paper and throws it in the garbage and rhodey cant help but peer into it and barely sees the words hey mom scribbled at the top and that. that. hm. okay.

so rhodey keeps trying because he wasnt supposed to see that but he did and now he kind of has a feeling that maybe tony isnt all that cold and distant and rude as he seems, maybe he just doesnt really know how to be any different, so he thinks about all the subtle little ways that his family has shown him they care about him and starts to invite tony to go get food or to study together even though neither of them really need to study or to help each other with assignments or just anything thats mundane enough to not raise suspicion but still starts to open the door and make tony relax around him just that little bit and then before tony realizes it the end of their first year is there and theyre like friends or something and it hits him that he’s gonna miss rhodey.

for the first time ever there’s someone other than his mom and jarvis that he’s actually going to miss.

rhodey grins at him and says that they’ll be roommates again next year because they have to be and that the summer will be over before they know it and the sentiment is nice but tony spends the summer alone wandering around a house too big and empty after being in a dorm that’s small and has a friend.

but rhodey doesn’t know this. like he knows that tony isn’t the kind of guy he originally assumed but he doesn’t know that he’s literally ignored and neglected and like emotionally and sometimes verbally abused so he’s kind of surprised when the next year begins and they DO end up being roommates again (because tony kind of asked his mom, on a rare day when he got to see her and howard wasnt around, to get mit to make sure they could be) and tony just HUGS him like its been years and they’ve known each other forever but he goes with it and hugs him back because maybe tony’s just more affectionate once he gets to know someone and rhodey is okay w that.

they get closer as the years go by and they graduate from mit together and they’re BEST friends and at the end of the year rhodey invites tony to spend new years eve w his family but tony cant bc howard is having some kind of gala starting at 5 because hes weird and dumb and tony hates it and he also isnt given the option of not going even though he doesnt want to but the entire way there howard drills into him about not fucking up and berates him for all the times he has in the past and when they get there tony is already just not feeling it so he’s like nope!! no!! i simply cannot!!

so he goes in and finds an exit thats in the back and he leaves and finds a fucking payphone of all things and he has rhodeys home number memorized for years now and he calls and someone he doesnt knoe answers and theres music in the background and voices and tony’s entire stomach is in his throat and his heart is sunken into his twisted gut because he just wanted one night where maybe he could smile next to his parents and feel like he fit with them but he couldnt have that and he asks to talk to rhodey and then he is and asks if its too late to accept his invite and rhodey is like yeah of course do u need my address bc its still only 5 pm and its a 2 hour drive between south philadelphia and manhattan so he’d make it with plenty of time before it got to midnight so yay

and tony is like. oh. hm. i dont know how to drive actually. that was a thing that no one ever thought to teach me even though i asked about it about ten million times. and rhodey is used to tony not knowing how to do things that most people their age can (see: the toast) and plus its not uncommon for people from new york to not drive anyway so he doesnt think anything of it and instead asks for tony’s address to come pick him up instead and they’d still make it back by like 9-9:30 so that would work too

and thats when tony is like. well.

about that.

he might be calling from a payphone.

on a random street corner.

and its kind of raining. and he’s cold. and he’s a bit dulled out from everything so he doesn’t really think about the fact that admitting this is going to lead to having to explain what happened and also why and that is happens often. but that doesnt matter because he kind of just wants to be with his best friend and not back at that gala with his dad right now.

rhodey is like,,, ok. ok. wheres a coffee shop nearby u can wait in. and tony thankfully is by a 24 hour one and tells him the name and the street corner its closest to and rhodey is like i’ll be there asap and tony goes and he waits.

a two hour drive turns into an hour and a half because rhodey is Worried™

but when he walks in tony goes from being all dulled out to being all HOLY SHIT because rhodey has a SPLIT LIP and he’s like WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED WHAT THE FUCK WHAT

and rhodey’s like no no its good my uncle was having fun and trying to wrestle with me and he accidentally elbowed me its all good man dont worry about it

tony isnt used to accidentally being hurt tho so he’s still like hmmm but he takes rhodeys word on it and they head out and tony wont say what happened or why he was calling from a payphone ?? which btw tony literally only was able to do bc there happened to be dropped change on the ground because boy would not have change on him ok, but rhodeys like alright lets go with this for now

so they gets to the rhodes house and it is in full swing with family and extended family and adopted family bc they are 100% the family that just adopts the neighborhood kids and the people who have no one else and like ex boyfriends and ex girlfriends even after the relationship ends bc they still are family despite not dating whoever it was they had been dating in order to be introduced to them so its a LOT of people and tony is like. this is semi familiar in terms a lot of people but this is NOTHING like what he has ever seen before holy fucking SHIT

rhodey is just like oh u have a small family then? so ur used to smaller gatherings?

and tonys like wtf are gatherings

and rhodey is starting to get a feel for what might be wrong but just takes tony inside to get him changed because he’s not spending new years eve at the rhodes house in a fucking expensive suit ok

tony is completely out of his element and like he’s not the only white guy there bc again the rhodes adopt people and those people are of every race and nationally you can imagine but he just isnt used to the vibe there are people laughing and sitting close together and playing games and theres music playing but not like classy music its music people can dance to and are dancing to and the food isnt the food he’s used to at galas and shit and nothing is what he’s used to and he just sticks to rhodey’s side like a fucking lost puppy and tries his best not to look like an idiot when rhodey introduces him to people and a lot of them know who he is but dont judge him or assume shit about him bc obviously if he’s friends w rhodey then he’s a good guy and they want to know him and thats enough

but tony is v overwhelmed bc what the FUCK IS HAPPENING this is nothing like anything he has ever experienced EVER

so eventually rhodey can tell he’s getting overwhelmed and takes him inside and lets him have a breather and then asks him about whats going in and thats when rhodey learns about what tonys life at home is really like and. anger.

SO MUCH anger

because not only has every single assumption he has ever made about tony been proven wrong, but now he knows that the best person he knows has never been treated the way he deserves and has never known a true home and comfort and love and safety and

and he’s gonna fix it

and this is the first step

so he takes tony back out and they’re still just friends but this is the day they both quietly realize they might kind of definitely like each other as more because tony is still so confused by the fact that what he knows isnt the normal and overwhelmed by how much there is and how different it is but rhodey holds his hand as a grounding point and whenever it might be too much they move off to the side where they arent completely gone but its less hectic and a bit more quiet and its just nice

tony goes to rhodeys house for every holiday despite whatever howard says

rhodey decks howard the only time they ever meet before tonys parents die and he has the most shit eating grin on his face afterwards that tony cant help but lose his shit laughing his ass off

anyway i didnt mean to ramble for so long about that specific idea so i’ll end the ironhusbands ramble with this one last thought, which is as follows:

rhodey gets hurt in the air force at some point, and it isnt that bad tbh but he does have to go the hospital and shit and gets stitches or whatever idk i dont know what specifically happens i just think it’d be just bad enough that it takes him a few weeks to be able to go back to work but he’s not like OH GOD HURT yk?

but like stated above tony was scared and worried when rhodey told him he was gonna go into the air force so he hears about this and they’re probably like almost 30 at this point because they’re dumb and it takes them forever to get their heads out of their asses (i say this even though in the portal closed it takes them even longer but i digress) rhodey has like his mon his sister his niece visiting him and they were worried but they know hes fine so theyre just talking and in a good mood and then—

door slams open. tony stark enter stage left. disheveled suit, fresh from a meeting he definitely was not supposed to leave, having flown in from maibu the second he heard and then had happy drive him and then got impatient because of traffic and ended up sprinting like ten blocks while happy was like what the FUCK

of course rhodeys family are well aware that these idiots are desperately in love with each other so they’re just like lol ok and just leave the room while tony starts fretting over him like he’s about to die himself if he doesnt know if rhodey is okay and rhodey is like tony tony dude tones stop tony im okay tony stop it

until finally tony just fucking breaks down like full on tears in his eyes voice cracking hands clasped as he leans against rhodeys bed and tells him that he was so scared and he is so scared all the time whenever rhodey is out there because all he can think about is losing him and him getting hurt or dying and it’s maddening and this is when they get their heads out of their asses and kiss for the first time

(irony at its finest bc later when they are married and tony becomes iron man rhodey refuses to not have a suit of his own because if tony is going out there in a metal flying tin can then he isn’t going alone and wow what a power couple)

okay NOW it gets into post tfatws so!!

SO post tfatws everything is different because now they not only have spent all this time together, but they understand each other in a way that they didn’t before. in a way no one ever has. not even steve, who may have known them before, but he isn’t here anymore and he wouldn’t understand who they are now vs who they were before and it’s different.

bucky finds comfort in sam’s home town. sam finds comfort in watching bucky find a home there and he doesnt know why.

also sam treats redwing like a puppy and lets him fly around on his own and gets pet and stuff and bucky acts annoyed but the longer it happens you can tell he’s like “oh my god why is this thing endearing”

bucky has nightmares and sam knows this but bucky doesnt know that sam also has nightmares until one night when they’re still in sams home town and they’re staying on the boat because sams nephews are having a sleepover with some friends and they didnt want to get in the way or smth idk i just want an excuse for them to be on the boat and somewhat secluded from people but bucky already woke up from his nightmare and is out on the deck to get some fresh out and then oop

sam havin a nightmare too

because fucking of COURSE sam has nightmares he has been through some shit too!! not being able to catch riley and everything that happened since meeting steve and thanos and he turned to dust alone in the bushes ok like yes everyone that died were traumatized undoubtedly (peter my baby boy baby im so sorry that you got the worst of it) but bucky was around people but sam was laying on the ground and probably just watched his hands as he disappeared and he was alone and like. jesus christ ok.

and then steve trusted him with every weight and everything that comes with the shield not knowing how much more the shield has when he gave it to a black man and just like he has nightmares everyone in marvel does its a fact

but bucky finds out like this and he is shocked even though he realizes he probably should have been able to guess that this is a thing and he knows so much more about sam now than he ever did but this is how he learns more. he learns about riley. he learns so much.

sometimes bucky has those like “oh shit” moments where he’s like “maybe i was kind of a dick to someone who didnt deserve it” and he already had one of those with sam about the shield but he has another one because he assumed shit about sam when they were being all childish and jealous about someone else being friends with steve but like fuck

steve and sam probably got it

the not catching someone. the way it felt to try and to reach out and to miss and to have to choice but to watch as they fell.

what’s different is that steve got bucky back. he got to have that relief, eventually, even if there was the pain of knowing bucky had been taken by hydra, but at least he knew bucky had made it.

sam didn’t have that. riley didnt make it.

therefore, bucky has his “oh shit”

and bucky was already going soft around the edges with sam (as clearly seen in the last two episodes of tfatws, ESPECIALLY the finale because like did tou SEEZ ALL THE HEART EYES oh my GOD) but it’s this that really makes something in him melt and he just. he loses the last remnants of whatever tension or resentment or whatever negative feeling he may have been clutching onto.

there wasnt much left. but now theres none. now its all washed away.

its gone, and he gets it.

sam is a licensed therapist and he knew the reason he was being all dumb and childish and jealous with bucky was because steve had another best friend but also because steve’s other best friend was the guy that had been a big factor in how him and steve understood each other and how they bonded and it

it had kind of felt like they lost part of that when they found bucky again in civil war and he kind of wanted to blame bucky for it even though he didnt actually blame him at all so all it translated to was that dumb kind of jealous thing instead

but now it’s just them. its sam and bucky and it isnt steve and it isnt about steve and it shouldnt be because its about them. its about the boat and the water and the way they sit and watch the waves while the silence settles over them and the way that bucky says, “im sorry.”

its the way sam says, “me too.”

and bucky says, “you dont have to be.”

its the way they stay there until sarah comes to get them for breakfast and sams nephews convince them to play with them and their friends and the world is still shit and there is so much to do but

but its this and its them and that can wait

it can wait

they can take their time if they want to

maybe they’ve earned that much, at least

(it isn't a fast development because they're a complicated pair and there's so much to the two of them that need to figured out individually before they can even realize how well they work together, but the steps are so much easier knowing that they have the other in their corner and bucky knows that sam's home town is a place he's welcome to go and sam helps him make his own dreary little apartment into something that feels real and tangible with a bed and a couch and when they've become something that resembles stable and they've found a balance and they're okay, that's when they realize that maybe they can try for the more that sometimes bubbles under their skin and that they started to think about the more they spend time together. the warmth that sam feels every time he sees bucky playing games with his nephew and the smile that bucky has to fight to hide and still can't fully suppress when sam stands tall and proud with the shield in its rightful place, and it takes time, it takes work, it takes carefully placed bricks to build the foundation they need, but they get there, and when they do...

when they do, they're already happy, and it just makes them happier, and that's what makes it so much better.

i finally saw ep1!! i wont be able to see ep2 until thursday at the earliest but i already have some Thots on this ep. here are the ones I remember

first is, and i'm so sorry for this, a grammar lesson. an appositive is when you stick an additional phrase in between commas, dashes, or the like. i actually just used one! the "and i'm so sorry for this" in the first sentence of this paragraph is an appositive. thing is, most english speakers don't normally use them when they speak, only in writing. so i'm always on high alert whenever i hear somebody in tv or movies use one. (it's generally a marker of bad screenwriting). anyway there was one right in the beginning of the episode. the white army guy yelling at sam wilson said "first lieutenant Torres, our intel officer, will be helping on the ground." yeah so. the writing of this series started out on the wrong foot for me. but the rest of the episode was obviously tons and tons better (every interview i see with malcolm spellman makes me love him more and more)

the contrast between the opening minutes (falcon action sequence) and the rest of the ep.... i would 100000/10 rather watch a series with just sam and bucky dealing with life. i dont give a single crap about the flag-smashers or any of that. i just want sam, sarah & fam getting their boating business back on the ground & yeeting racist dickwads, bucky going through therapy and making amends, sam and joaquin being bros, sambucky homoerotic tension, etc.

the cinnamontography! wandavision mostly used cinematography to signify era n stuff. tfatws doesn't have wv's premise to go off of, so here's some tricks i noticed:

with sam there's obviously all sorts of shots with the captain america iconography next to his face, but he hasn't totally claimed it. there's the mural of steve rogers in the background; there's sam staring into the shield like it's a spectre of steve's face; there's sam looking into the exhibit, the shield and sam separated by glass and a layer of camera focus. steve is a constant spectre, always there, an idea, a symbol himself. sam's relationship with this iconography is distanced. he is separated by glass exhibit walls. by painting canvases. he doesn't yet feel worthy to take on that iconography. this whole thing was pulled off quite well but also a bit on-the-nose if only in quantity. there's just sooooo much fancy iconography stuff

speaking of the exhibit, there's something that i get real pissy about. it's when like, there's an action going on you're supposed to be paying attention to but the cinematographer is like,,,, hey! check out this location! or this headline! or something! there was a lot of that in the exhibit. the camera was like, you could focus on sam and rhodey's convo (which was fine but could have been so much better with an extra like 10 minutes of deep character study talk) but noooo you want me to look at the symbol for the united nations and read all the text about bucky who hasn't even showed up yet. shut up i know the lore and ill watch the shot-by-shot breakdown yt vids you don't have to make the shot this long jkdsalcjklasejf

my fav trick was with bucky and the therapist. i had seen a clip of the scene with bucky and the therapist beforehand and i thought the cinnamontography was super obnoxious, but then i was like, oh duh. the shots frequently change the distance between the camera and its subject. sometimes it's uncomfortably close and sometimes it's really far. a clear allegory for the duality of therapy, esp for bucky! therapy is an invasive process wherein he is ruthlessly examined, picked apart, and berated for his trauma (this therapist is crap in every way btw, "mean therapist" works for greg house and greg house only). so the camera goes close. it makes the viewer claustrophobic like bucky. but when he's like "no i haven't had any nightmares" the camera suddenly goes really far. we see bucky as this tiny head in the center of the bottom of the frame. we are distanced from him. he has pushed us away. we cannot see him. he lies because he is vulnerable. so yeah, amazing work there. the therapy scene was hard to watch on purpose!

did bucky slip a note to yori inside the dollar bill? bucky stop making me emooooo. the suuper awkward fake smile has me 😭 (veteran trying to adjust!)

speaking of racism, the interplay between sam being Black (anti-Black racism) and sam being the Falcon (negrophilia, "can i take a selfie w you as i deny you a loan?") and the intersection between the two (j*hn lichrally called sam "steve's wingman"! he takes the crypto out of crypto-racist in like 2 seconds!) !!!!!!!! a Black celebrity's Black experience, the separation of man and identity!!!! (thinking about vanessa bayer in snl in that skit "beyonce is black" telling her black friend "you're not black, you're...my girl!")

after sam gets racially profiled by cops we see j*hn standing in front of cop cars cinematic parallels turns out j*hn is racist who knew

this therapist sucks major ass but she got bucky and sam together in the same room and ready to collaborate...that's something ig. it was lichrally couple's therapy she said she used her miracle exercise with couples sambucky antis get blended

bucky says "he was wrong about you so maybe he was wrong about me"...that's not how people talk. when therapist asks bucky, the guy who doesn't talk at all about himself, "y do you hate sam", the last thing bucky's gonna do is actually connect his hatred of sam to his own self-worth issues. bucky generally refuses to talk about himself, so why would he talk about himself in the one context that nobody ever links back to their own neuroses: hatred of other people? one thing human beings hate most is admitting we're wrong. admitting you hate someone because of your own issues? that's a major therapeutic step. bucky would absolutely have to be prompted to do that. even like one or two lines of dialogue more would have set up that line better. but in terms of the actual thought? an amazing way to take the sam/bucky relationship. bucky bases his self-worth on steve believing in him, and if steve is wrong bucky has no self-worth, so 1) he has to develop self-worth disassociated from steve's assessment of him and 2) he has to love himself before he can love sam, and 3) he has to realize that sam giving up the shield is a sign of sam's humility not his unworthiness.

conversely, we don't get into why sam hates bucky? yeah sam has the right to hate a guy that has tried to kill him (albeit while brainwashed) multiple times, and now shows up in his life just to bash him but. everything happens so fast i cant follow their relationship

in fact i dont feel like i understood much of anything. like y did bucky and sam go on that mission together? how connected are sam/bucky/joaquin with the government? doesn't bucky just want to retire now? literally what is everyone doing/feeling and why???

if battlestar becomes a knowing commentary on the black best friend stereotype i'm gonna party, but i dont expect much of that

the interplay between man and symbol. captain america is obviously a symbol. the shield is obviously a symbol. but steve rogers? the. man behind the cowl? he too seems to become a symbol. a paragon of a good guy, so good he's unreachable. steve was just a guy stop idolizing him the last thing steve would want is to be idolized

Don't worry about getting this to me as early as possible. I usually don't watch the episode right away.

1. Cool writing lesson.

2. Everyone wants a comedy show [like Friends] about the MCU superheroes.

3. Cinematography is always a beautiful thing.

4. Sam definitely has to carve his own Captain America status for himself, outside of Steve's ya know everything.

5. They have to do that for people who was just now tuning in because they're in love with Sam Wilson or Sharon Carter.

6. I think the therapist was taking a 'tough love' approach for Bucky, because she likely has some very strong opinions about the literal assassin she's been assigned to give therapy too. She did not choose to talk to him, she was assigned that make that clear in the second episode.

And, Bucky isn't lying when he said it wasn't a nightmare. It wasn't a nightmare, it was a resurfaced memory. So, technically he wasn't lying - and yes, the camera does move away because while he's saying he didn't have a nightmare, he's not expanding on what actually happened - so, he's still pushing the therapist/us away.

1. Honestly, that line was double meaning. Both about White people and Hydra [which is made up of mostly white supremacists/nazis] So, the line is gesturing to both White People in general and Hydra assholes together. I think the terminology is “double edge sword”??

2. This whole paragraph structure confused me, ngl - so I'm going to answer it the best I can. I do like that they're not ignoring the fact that Sam being Black is 1000% the reason he's not the Official Captain America - because the gov't is racist as hell.

I also like the little lines about how they point out little things about Sam's Falcon persona, like that kid calling him 'Black Falcon' specifically and Sam's response show the split between Sam and Falcon itself.

John is a dick for calling Sam the wingman of Steve Rogers. Sam was a hero all on his own before Steve asked him to join up again. [Side note, it's lichrally??]

3. Exactly, the parallel of Sam being profiled and surrounded while just on the street and John being surrounded by fans and being able to spring Bucky with apparently only a few sentences shows a Loooooot

4. Honestly, at this point I wonder if she's not actually a therapist and is just an agent assigned to assess Bucky outside of an Official Building. I do know, however, that her 'look at each other and speak' exercise is actually a real therapy practice. It's just a little slower.

5. Actually, I think he would've blurted that out. That whole line. I don't think Bucky hates Sam. I think they could've done the scene better, but I think that had Sam prodded him/the therapist been more annoying Bucky would've lost control of his emotions and blurted out the whole "If he was wrong about you, he was wrong about me" but I feel like the writing for this show is just... not there. Sometimes you blurt shit when you get overemotional and I think that was what Bucky was supposed to be like.

6. I don't think Sam hates Bucky, I think he doesn't trust him though. I do wish they'd talked about that though. The whole 'talk to each other' scene should've been a LOT longer and a LOT slower.

7. Sam and Bucky's relationship is being fast tracked because they don't really know how to work the relationship out, writers-room-wise. Bucky is technically retired, but I feel like he's trying to live up to Steve's expectations and doing what Steve would've done and we all know that if Steve was there, Steve would've jumped on that plane with Sam. It looks like Sam/Bucky/Joaquin are a side-team based from Military services but as Sam says they're all free agents so...?

8. Sadly, They seem to just be propping up to be another stereotype.

9. Captain America is a symbol. Steve Rogers is a man. But now Steve Rogers is an idol because of all the shit he's been through and honestly, it's not a bad thing he's become an idol for people - it's using Steve as a reason to make White Bread Walker the next Captain that makes Steve's idolization so fucked.

10. I don't know anything about music so I have no opinion here, sorry.

11. Enfys?? Also, I think they did the whole Innocent Girl Thing as side commentary for Bucky lowering his guard about seeing a young girl rather than a guy.

12. Bucky is the Winter Solider. The Winter Solider is Bucky. That is how Bucky will always see it because although he was brainwashed, it was still him and he remembers all of it. When you have constant memories of something 'someone else' did, you tend to not be able to pull the two personas out of each other. I want Bucky to take up the title, White Wolf instead of Winter Soldier. Honest.

This is all my opinion, I’m honestly a little disappointed with the writing of TFATWS so far so... I’m not really optimistic about this.

elizabeth swan & will turner (pirates of the carribbean) - watching potc im always rooting for them so hard even though i know how the movie ends skdhbkj elizabeth is such a badass and will is always ready to lay his life down for her! one of my fav het otps (and i have very few of those)

harley quinn & poison ivy (dc) - what a powerful couple. they are both stunning as hell and they are truly some of my favourite characters to watch or read about! theres just something about them!!

katniss and peeta (the hunger games) - i watched teh hunger games for the first time like last month and i loved it so much! especially the dynamic between these two  it was just really amazing and had me in my feels
