Yeah it's sort of a battle royale, but of the "death game" variety. Basically instead of just killing each other, the characters have to complete a series of games with varying difficulty in order to survive.

There's a Netflix live action show of Alice in Borderland that's actually pretty good, if you don't feel like reading the manga yet. I'm personally enjoying the manga a lot more, but there are some games, world building aspects and takes on characters that I prefer in the show. I think it's a bit of a reimagining instead of an adaptation.

But the fact that it's actually good is a novelty, lmao. When you think "live action adaptation of a manga" you would usually think "complete disaster" right? XD there are people who may dislike one of the two, I myself have disliked adaptations of books/comics I love (like anything in Game of Thrones post season 4, really lmao), sometimes I have liked both takes to different degree (I think both FMA anime series are good and should ultimately be watched alongside reading the manga. I do prefer the manga/brotherhood, but having more FMA to watch and read is always good - unless it's the Netflix movie. Speaking of the devil 🤣).

As for comparing it to squid game, I'm now being recommended by the stupid YouTube algorithm videos that put the two against each other. Let's not compare two queens. Personally, the themes of both series resonate a lot with me, I just personally resonate a little bit more with Squid Game, that's all.

Mmhh another story that is more death game than straight up battle royale is "the long walk" by Stephen King. I really liked that one.

I think what I like about death games stories is how sad they make me lmao. It's always dangerous to get attached to characters.

And also, exploring different games and the rules. And the connections the players make that may lead to hope or more sadness. These stories also usually carry a very powerful messages.

If you like videogames, one I've been recently obsessed with is Your Turn To Die, which has a browser version you can play for free. I've been waiting for the last chapter to drop for the past year. Warning tho: it's surprisingly graphic. Violence is expected in this type of stories, but this one sometimes reached edgy levels of violent.

Also the game is a visual novel but done in rpg maker. I know nothing about programming of any kind, but apparently such a feat is kinda insane.

okay so. quick breakdown. unstable universe is a Scripted server that has three povs + big storylines going on. parrot has a pov, wemmbu does, and so does spoke. theyre all rly fucking long (the videos are mostly 3-4 hours, be warned).

if youreee here for the ken content, then watch parrots pov ! ken shows up in the third video, and then the 6th video is About Them (narratively), and. ik theyre in the 7th, but i havent seen that one yet. theyre all long as fuck, so. its alright to just start w the, idk, proton video (parrots 6th uu video) if youre there for ken. youd be missing a lot of lore + context, but. theyre made to be able to be viewed as standalones, and you can go back and watch the other videos if you get invested.

its. rly hard to summarise uu. because the storyline at the start (where theres duping and glitches and theyre trying to fix the server) gets abandoned almost immediately and just. branches off into a bunch of shit. i dont think parrot even has a big Goal like wemmbu does? theres lots of character development, but. i guess his goal is to keep the server safe. i guess. whatever. its a big story, theyre telling a story. each video can be viewed as a standalone bcs its a singular arc in the bigger story. most of the context is provided.

trust me tho, if you watch parrots pov of uu you will be insane abt odyssey duo (parrot and wifies), theyre. theres a lot of lore. its so hard to explain. without spoilers and a long fucking rant sdjhkfglsdf

but yeah tldr if youre there for ken, then start with the proton video i guess? watch parrots pov. thats sure to get you invested. but i was there for ken + wifies and i started All The Way From The Start (playlist of ALL the uu videos btw), and i am deeply invested nods

Everyone’s been talking about byler vs others shows lately and can I just say I can’t scroll for 2 seconds without seeing a post about “Heartstopper” or “The Summer I Turned Pretty” on any of my socials and I’m getting really annoyed? 😭 The cast of both shows seem so sweet but I don't care to hear about it! LONG, DRAMATIC SIGH,,,,, if he has no choice, he supposes he could play a few games and give you whatever he wins. 

Satan somehow managed to convince him to play air hockey, and Lucifer surprisingly agreed. Yeah he was suspicious of his gremlin brother’s intentions, but it’d probably be fine.

What was supposed to be a friendly game between brothers has turned into an all out war. Their blinding speed turns the puck into a blur, and they’ve gathered a crowd-

Lucifer wins, but he doesn’t have a chance to celebrate because someone throws a fucking slice of pizza at the back of his head

Mammon

This isn't what HE would've chosen, but he guesses it's fine. An arcade means gambling in some way, right?

Makes a beeline for the coin drop game. He loves also loves the games that give you a 20% chance of winning a jackpot of some kind and honestly?? He's fucking GOOD... when Asmodeus isn't constantly poking his sides and making him mess up.

It takes him no time to figure out the algorithms of those games and now he's raking in all the tickets. Staff is suspicious as hell

Especially when they see a grown man walk up to the prize counter with his arms full of tickets, no children in sight.

"MC! Get over here and pick out some prizes! I won all this for yet birthday, so let me spoil ya!"

See, Satan is all for celebrating the way you want to (and he's good at pretending like he's not bothered), but he can't really say that a pizza and sweat scented arcade full of screaming children is the best place to read a book

Regardless, it’s pretty funny watching you run around like an excited little kid, dragging everyone around to the nearest game.

Then he gets the great idea of harassing Lucifer into playing air hockey with him. “It’s MC’s birthday, so why don’t we let loose a little?”

All hell breaks loose and now they’ve attracted the attention of a crowd of amazed children, all according to plan. How humiliating would it be for Lucifer to lose in front of CHILDREN?

Thought he was slick and cursed the puck to move away from Lucifer every time he tried to hit it, but somehow he’s?? still winning???

Satan would’ve been pissed off if not for the mysterious slice of pizza that came sailing through the air and hit Lucifer in the back of the head

The tables are sticky. Everything smells weird. Children are everywhere. Everything is so flashy and gaudy that it’s giving him a headache-

This wasn’t Asmo’s party destination of choice, but... well.. it’s fine as long as he sticks to you, right? 

Also refuses to touch anything because as familiar as he may be with sticky surfaces, this ain’t it chief.

Since he’s so bored, he decides to Mammon, constantly poking and tickling him so he’ll loose at the games he’s playing, and runs away when he’s attacked

Soon enough though, Asmo excuses himself to the bathroom, thinking no one notices how he’s dragging a staff member toward the supply closet-

Eventually comes back to tell you that he set something up, so now you can get whatever prize you’d like!

Beel

Yeah, Beel is fine with wherever you wanna go for your birthday. It's your special day after all! So when you suggest whatever the hell 'Chuck E Cheese' is, he's just happy you're happy

Belphie wasn’t a big fan of your choice for a birthday destination, mostly because there was no way he’d be able to sleep with all the music and screaming going on, but who is he to argue against your decision?

Besides, he soon realizes that the sky tunnels are the PERFECT nap spot, save for the occasional kid crawling over him.

It also gives him a bird’s eye view of everything that’s going on, including the intense air hockey battle between Lucifer and Satan.

Seeing Lucifer’s reaction is everything he needed to turn this day into an even better one. Now he can sleep peacefully <3

But when he saw you waving at him from one of the tunnel windows, he became determined to crawl to every window he could find and wave from there, too.

Then Belphegor came along.

How can anyone sleep so soundly?? He’s been smacking, shoving, and poking the sleeping demon but nothing is working! Time to cry-

so i was weird in that i was fully aware of lgbtq+ identities & not even just that it was possible to be gay like i knew about bisexuality and what trans meant and also what ace and aro were. somehow. like i genuinely do not know how i knew that i just did. so i knew all this stuff it just never occurred to me? that i might like girls?? probably because at the time i kept falling madly in love with a new guy every year. that was definitely enough to keep me occupied tbh.

Hey YouTube did a stupid!!

Y'all know Ann Reardon? The woman who does all those fantastic debunking videos?

Well she posted a video on the extreme dangers of fractal wood burning (don't effing do it) annnnd YouTube, in their infinite wisdom, took down the video because it "promoted dangerous actions"......hello????

Did they take down other fractal wood burning videos? Nope! Did they wait until she was #3 on the search for it, and had many many comments about how she just saved someone's life or thanking her because the commenter knew someone who had died? Yep!!

So if you wouldn't mind helping to raise this video up the ranks, she explains what happened and how much good the other video did, before basically telling YouTube to suck it (and risking a channel strike) by reinserting the footage telling why that type of wood burning is so dangerous.

I'd post the video in this post, but I'm not sure how views are calculated when watched through Tumblr. And algorithmically it's better if you also could like and comment on the vid (I know it's ridiculous but hey it helps stick it to YouTube's insanity)

I’m gonna speak over anon because I’m literally terrified of phannies coming after me even though I’ve rebranded, I still get hate anons from them even now which is crazy. Anyway. It’s honestly a relief to read a respectful take on why someone’s left the phandom. Your words put my exact feelings into articulation and I think my main emotion is just... disappointment? I feel like dnp hold their audience at an arm’s length now and for good reason. It’s impersonal, and after what we put them through I think they deserve that. The fact that people are still trying to keep some kind of momentum going, hyping up cookie-cutter content or you know, making aus about a literal REAL BABY just doesn’t sit right with me. It feels good and healthy to move on. They aren’t interesting now. Seeing people running full time phan blogs makes me actually uncomfortable. Because I don’t feel like it’s really about dnp so much as clout seeking half the time these days.

and you’re totally right. one of the weirdest shifts for me that kinda gave me the final push to leave was the fact that dnp stopped caring about their audience. and the thing is, dnp always seemed different to other youtubers because they had this connection with us. twice daily livestreams, one a week upload from the gaming channel, twice monthly updates between them… take 2018 for example, if you asked any phannie they’d probably agree that it was the best year for us all because it felt like dnp were on this emotional wavelength with us where it was like: ‘okay this is the content we like and this is the content we’re getting’ and it was so perfectly balanced. it never felt like they were just pumping out content for the sake of it. they could take a boring ass game like ‘google autocomplete’ and make a real good video out of it. that was the content and the dan and phil i enjoyed.

and now??? dude. the mere idea that phil went ahead and deleted all his lessamazingphil videos to reach a larger audience is just…….. if i cared more i’d be mad. they so clearly want a different audience now. im sorry to the phannie moots that follow me still but that’s just what i see. phil’s content went from lighthearted jokey funtimes to ‘oh my god you’re a 30 something year old man making content on the same level as fuckin troomtroom and you’re still making butthole face thumbnails to appease the algorithm.’ and that’s just heartbreaking bro. what the fuck happened. i was around for the cereal tasting video (i never watched it i don’t think i’ve watched a single video since last year) and like………… the hype it got? for a low quality looking buzzfeed quiz type video is just… yeah. dude, this goes beyond the argument of ‘BUT JENNA MARBLES MADE THESE VIDEOS!!!! SHE DID IT AND EVERYONE LOVED IT!!!’ and the difference between phil and jenna was: jenna put a whole lot of fuckin effort into those videos to make them unique. not just: trying on makeup! but instead: ‘trying on makeup and then squirting eye drops into my eyeballs to make myself cry to then see which one is best for dramatic crying purposes!!’ there was a whole spin on the take that i’ve never seen phil EVER do. sorry to this man but he really…… isn’t as creative as he used to be. he falls flat every time in his videos and it makes me laugh when i see the same 😯 face in his thunmbnails with the most boring looking video idea painted in bright colours. this is the same man that was making those wacky ass videos in 2009? could have fooled me. are we sure he isn’t working for buzzfeed or something because that’s the vibe i get from him lmao.

and dan. ohhhh dan. not to be that person who asks a googleable question but wtf is hazbin hotel bc i googled it and the only “critical” thing i could find was a typo-ridden article of someone saying it has good animation and its haters are stupid. i was able to glean what it is/what it’s about but idk about the discourse lmao

Im actually so glad u asked this. Here's the lowdown, this is my definitive answer to hazbin shit from here on out, unless new info comes about of course.

Hazbin hotel is an independent cartoon by vivziepop. Most people (that ive seen) have agreed that the pilot of the show really isnt that great but the reason it has so many fans is bc of the entertaining livestreams, massive amounts of canon content produced (she has had these characters for years), unique art style, and the characters. (Ass ugly but unique.)

Its haters are totally justified bc of some of the "controversial" (read: bad) things vivziepop has done. Here's the conclusion that my friends and classmates (several of whom are Black, one Hispanic woman, and one trans woman...nellie if ur reading this i 💜 u) and i came to after discussing this stuff. I am NOT saying "well my black/trans friend said it's ok so i dont have to think about it!" this is based on a few different conversations that my friends and i have had about this topic so what im saying is that my opinion was formed by talking about this situation with multiple people affected by the controversy.

One controversial thing is a drawing u can easily find on google (called beastiality.jpg i believe?) It's a cropped (chest and up, but hes obv naked) drawing of vivziepops character, drawn by vivziepop, moaning, with a snake around him. The character is 17. Many people have interpreted this as child porn. I dont think this image is pornographic, i think it's a stupid joke (it was even tagged as a joke iirc) and completely inappropriate but since it's 8 years old on top of not being porn, i think it's just an example of a dumb drawing. That being said, i would NEVER argue that someone who is uncomfortable w the drawing (im uncomfortable with it! It's gross just not porn) or considers it porn is wrong. They are entitled to that opinion and i would never expose them to vivziepops work or talk about her stuff around them if they expressed to me that they disliked the image.

Another thing is that she drew a doodle of two racist TERFs. This is the one where my friends of color, my friends who are black, and my friends who are trans women took the lead. I sat back for this part and here's their and my opinion on this after talking about it and verbally going through this whole situation.

She was following these women (who had done blackface and stuff) and drew art of them. The art was a "quick doodle" that she did apologize for and she said she didn't realize the extent of their beliefs. She knew they werent great but hadnt consumed much of their content in depth. I believe her bc while ive never followed anyone as bad, ive certainly followed some pieces of shit and didnt notice for months simply bc im not online all the time and bc of the volume of people i follow, combined with the non chronological algorithms lately.

At the risk of screwing myself, im going to admit that there was about a year or so of my life where i enjoyed The Amazing Atheist. I was even subbed to him. I was a nonbinary lesbian (2 things he cant stand lmaoo) in catholic school and therefore i strictly watched his videos about theological stuff since thats what was frustrating me at the time. I had no clue the type of evil racist, transphobic, homophobic (yes ik hes bi), misogynistic things he thought, said, and did, bc i didnt watch those videos. I literally only watched select theological ones that could be of use to me while edgily debating my teachers (sorry mrs macdougal but u had it coming). I was about 15 at the time and im 19 now. Im sorry to everyone i hurt by ever having supported him. I had one of his quotes written in the inside of my religion notebook in high school. I regretted it and ripped the page out the moment i discovered the truth about him. I cant stress enough how much I HATE HIM. Thats an example of what i think happened here tho.

One of my friends who is a trans woman said (paraphrasing) "i think the worst thing shes done is that terf art but i believe the apology especially bc it was a quick drawing."

That being said, i would NEVER argue with someone who wanted nothing to do w vivziepop bc of this. That's their right. 100%. I would never expose them to her work after that.

The last thing i remember is something about a pedophilic couple in a comic but i heard it was a 17 year old and a 19 year old. Im 19 and if one of my peers did that i wouldnt say pedophile but id say ur a fucking weirdo, BUT, the kids were fake and being written by an adult so i can totally see her thinking that age gap is much less of a big deal than it really is. Like she forgot what it's like at this age. Idk how true any of that part is tho, i heard that info entirely secondhand.

Another thing to do with racism is that there's a joke within the show where one character says to the other

"don't get your taco in a twist"

"Was that supposed to be racist or sexist?"

"Whichever one pisses you off more"

I thought that was gross but one of my friends pointed out that vivziepop is of el salvadorian descent so that's her business. Like if i made a lesbian joke of equal or greater offensiveness than that and someone tried to call me lesbophobic over it id be like "that's literally my territory."

Oh speaking of which that character's name is vaggie and shes a lesbian but it's not pronounced w the same G you'd hear in "vagina." Vivziepop seems to name characters weirdly (like how in helluva boss theres a guy named blitzo and the o is silent) so maybe it's a pussy joke but i have no idea.

The animation was.................better than i could do, i wanna say the faces and gestures were good but god i remember there was a part with a car and my gf had to pause so i could laugh my ass off at it. I wouldn't describe the animation as a highlight but i liked the style in motion i thought it was a fun change. Vivziepops style is not appealing imo but i appreciate it as an art student and as someone whose friends all like she ra and steven universe where every character looks the goddamn motherfucking same, and while its chaotic and i dont care for it, the style actually works way better in motion than you'd think.

A good rule that i def use is to assume hazbin fans are guilty until proven innocent. If someone says they dont care about the discourse surrounding it and like it no matter what, RUN! They would support the show even if the creator was in fact a pedophile, or had done the blackface/was a terf herself! They probably support some horrible ppl and are probably "anti antis." A lot of them are minors tho so i'd say block and move on.

So, do i like it or not? Im an art student and all my friends like it so while i didnt think it was funny, i do fuck with it. At the convention this weekend my friends and i had a convo that led to me drawing an ahego hoodie where the faces were angel dust (a character's) face. It was a joke that i could make a killing by selling that in a booth at a con.

Theres really nothing compelling about the show but my friends like it so i join in on their conversations, and i do have a soft spot for angel dust bc he's like a worse, less amazing and gorgeous version of one of my characters, Candy, the love of my life.

A lot of people say the show was edgy/offensive and maybe im just desensitized but besides the taco thing i didnt pick up on that whatsoever??? The Archer episode "Swiss Miss" is worse than helluva boss and hazbin combined and even archer isn't offensive.

Im probably not aware of all the "discourse" (aka people being reasonably uncomfortable by weird and bad shit this random woman has done, and other ppl saying their opinions are wrong when it's literally just an opinion about a show) so if anything she's done isnt included in here it's not to defend vivziepop, this is genuinely all i know. I wouldnt describe myself as a fan of hers.
