What kind of story do you want it to be?

Multifaceted question. For genre, I'm aiming for something that falls into fantasy? I'm kind of hesitant to call it a romance, but I'm not denying there isn't romance in it. For like themes? In general, it may end up being more angsty? It won't by any means be like an overall bummer to read but a bunch of characters have pretty bad stuff happen to them (womp wompp)

Do you ship any of your characters? - Are they platonic, or do they hate each other?

YES I DO. Like idk if I made this kinda clear or not but I do ship Sylvia and Mira? Like I plan for them to be platonic for a whileee but like not foreverr. ALSO that does not mean they don't hate each other. They do. for a while. (but not forever.)

How long do you intend this story to be? What age range is your audience?

I intend the story to span multiple chapters. I think the chapters won't be very long? I don't intend on writing more than 5k words in a chapter. I'd rather update on semi-consistent short chapters than burn myself out on longer ones. I doubt the story will go over 15 chapters? So it may end up being an approximately 75k word fic. or maybe I'm being ambitious or it'll end up being like 60k. Or maybe I'm underestimating and it'll be 90k. I'm just figuring stuff out.

For age range, I don't really have anything specific? If we were going movie ratings, this would probably be PG-13? There are of course some parts more serious than others, but I think anyone who isn't like very easily upset could read it.

hi vy!! i recently caught up with the latest chapter of passing days, and was wondering if you had any specific interior design style you associated with the grail lounge, or with your s/i's room? i always imagine something light & classy, but comfy :D

Hi Anon. (slowly nods) Your impression of something light and classy but comfy for both rooms is just about right.

When it comes to Master Vy's room, I didn't really have a specific interior design. Oberon's recent chapter in Day 67 is the most I've written for said room in descriptors. The regular bed, shower stand, a dresser cabinet for all the Mystic Codes, a desk for her books and work station, and a nightstand. I feel the most personality she'd put into it are the various mementos/knick-knacks she was gifted by from the Servants, including group pictures taken from Part 1 (that she was able to stash away when Chaldea ran away from the Bleaching in Part 2's prologue), one or two plush toys for her to hug when she's asleep, and maybe even a necklace tree for her to hang some occasional jewelry. And even then, she's very mimimalist about it, because after the destruction of the original Chaldea, she has her things scattered about in such a way so that she can pack it all up and run if needed.

As for the Grail Lounge, I actually keep thinking of one of the entertainment rooms my family has irl in my house, or even one of the lounge areas I got to see on the one cruise trip I took with said family. There's a mounted TV; very comfy armchairs; a small kitchen with stocked fridge, oven, and toaster; a partition for a single bed for resting/daily napping; a hammock; a pool table - lots of things for the Grailed to relax in. Stored bean bags and blankets are a must too, I think. Because when you have a workaholic Master who relaxes in naps, why not nap with her?

i don't really like when people say dungeon meshi is accidentally good autistic representation, because while i understand not wanting to make conclusions without explicit confirmation from the author, there's always the weird assumption that non-western authors somehow don't know about things like neurodivergency/queerness/etc. (on top of the assumptions that east asian authors are somehow more naive or oblivious to "western" social issues).

given that dungeon meshi started being published in 2014, it's not really a "work belonging to its times"—it's as contemporary as any other media we discuss on this site, which means it should be fair to assume it engages with contemporary topics (and at the very least, you shouldn't say that the representation is accidental with so much confidence)

but anyways, the chapter "perfect communication" in ryoko kui's "terrarium in a drawer" is some of the most straightforward autistic representation I've seen, and from now on I'm going to assume that laios's character writing is absolutely intentional in that regard:

Swinging at target dummys - shooting at targets - someones behind him. turn to hit them.. Deimos.. salems older sister.. whos supposed to be gone. forever. but.. stood infront of salem.. changed by..what happened. god of being lost.. of hunting.. wolves and dogs.. of the moon. Here she was. looking down at the younger god with a smile. Deimos had been summoned.. to a diffrent place..a place with familiar faces.. they are safe they got off the isle, most importantly - the person who summoned deimos.. Perrito was there. Salem moras brother.. perrito.. was there. He wants to see her. He wants to see salem. And unknowingly had opened up a way for her to do it.. with deimos here.. salem some magic back

Salem has magic back.. even just a little. but its enough.. its enough to get through an opening.. To see Perrito. Magic is fleeting.. so salem and Deimos turn the magic into a ball of energy.. a pearl it can use to get where she needs to be.. Salem hasnt felt this happy since before she jumped into the void.. Doesnt have to be scared alone.. thats what theyd promised.. and she was going to get to keep it.. after all.. she has been.. so scared. This isnt the end of the stories. If he can see Perrito again.. who else could he get to see in the future.. He sets off to where Perrito is.. hoping maybe some other familiar faces can be seen soon.. Maybe things arnt so bad after all..
