Erik Lehnsherr and sister reader for the 5-line-fanfic challenge. The 1st sentence: 'Mutations are a bitch.'

A/N: Set the moment the elevator doors open in DOFP. OC!reader has 2 mutations (can control metal like Erik, and stopped aging at around 16–the latter of which was discovered in their time apart).

Mutations are a bitch.

If there was one thing you had learnt in the unconventional years you’d been alive, it was that. Mutations, whatever they happened to be, were a bitch. It didn’t matter if you could use it for the good, or you could hide it from those less accepting. Mutations meant abnormal. You were abnormal.

The elevator doors opened. Charles punched Erik. Erik saw you as he nursed his jaw.

“Y/N?” Confusion passed like a wave across his face, and pain washed over yours. It had been years. Years since the day on the beach, and the moment you had decided you’d rather live a life in relative peace with Charles than continue to seek vengeance with Erik. Years since you’d learnt the truth of your mutation. That controlling metal wasn’t all.

You swallowed back a swell of emotions. You had expected to feel something, of course. Once, you and your brother had been all each other knew and loved. In the time away from each other, both of you had grown—and hadn’t—in unimaginable ways. 

“Hi, Erik,” you said, your voice quiet and trembling. One part of your ached to run to him and hug him, if only to make up for lost time. The other needed to stay back, just to gauge his reaction. Because it had been a long, long time.

“You…you haven’t changed.” He stepped out of the elevator. Everyone was silent. Charles, his fists balled, moved to stand behind you, his eyes fixed on Erik. He’d been your brother for the past eleven years, there to help you harness your powers, there to comfort you when you missed Erik, there to support you through the discovery of your second mutation. The mutation that stopped your growth.

“Mutations are a bitch,” you said. There was no hint of cockiness or sarcasm. Nothing to suggest you were at all angry at him for not being there. Which you were. But it had needed to happen. 

“Alright,” Logan said, his voice hesitant. Charles had spilled the basics of the situation between brother and sister on the plane over, but there was a lot the Wolverine still didn’t know. “We need to get out of here.”

Charles took your hand in his own and began to tug you away. Erik’s frown deepened and he rapidly shook his head, moving quickly forward and snatching up your other hand. “Why haven’t you changed?” He looked at Charles. “Why does she look the same, Charles?”

“We can talk about this on the plane,” Charles said firmly. He turned at the sound of men filing into the room, but you and Erik remained locked on each other, years of unspoken agony flowing between you. He seemed ready to argue against Charles’s words, too focused on you to recognise the danger you were all currently in, but you took your arm from his grip and clasped his hand before he could open his mouth.

“It’s okay, Erik,” you spoke quietly, squeezing his hand. “I’m okay. I’ll tell you everything, but right now, we need to get out of here alive.”

Erik’s jaw tensed. His eyes flicked to Charles, to Peter and Logan, and then back to you. He rolled his shoulders back and nodded. “Alright,” he said.

Abnormality had no room for smooth sailing.

A/n- I didn’t know it would be this long.

Emma and Erik walks out of the Crossroad bar, leaving it in distraught. They flipped the bar upside down to 

"She heading to theThieves Guild hideout." Emma said. 

"We need to get to there before she does."

"Do you still plan to hand her over to Charles?" Emma asked.

"Of course not, if what Charles say it true then there’s no way in hell I’m going to let him snuff her out….she’ll be the most powerful mutant to ever walk....we need her on our side." Erik replied.

"I thought you weren't fighting anymore...? Emma wondered.

"I'm not but you can train her on how to use her telepathic powers." Erik answered. "She will need a guide."

How we going to convince her to be on our side."

"That will be easy, explained our causes." Erik said with an smile.

The walk to the hideout was quite. Y/n almost lost control of the Phoenix and hurt or possibly killed someone, if it wasn’t for Johnny she would’ve destroyed the bar.

"I'm sorry." Y/n announced. "I..I wasn't thinking I could've hurt you." 

"What happened?" Polaris asked.

"Y/n was about to use her powers on him." Johnny said pointing at Jean.

"What made you so mad?" Polaris wondered. 

"Jean is my friend’s father." Y/n answered.

"That's great, wouldn’t he know where he is?"

"No, he’s the reason Gambit got captured in the first place." Y/n explained. "I won't forgive him for that."

"What do you plan to do when we get to the hideout?" Johnny asked.

"Improvise." Y/n said with a smirk. "But for the most part I have a plan." 

"Then let's hear it!" Johnny exclaimed. Johnny goes and waves his hand in front of Jean's face. "Jean here, can't hears us any way so out with it." 

"I'm going in you two are staying outside." Y/n explained.

"What!?" Polaris voiced.

"I don't know what will happened in there I almost hurt you and Johnny back at Crossroad." Y/n explained. "Your the closest thing I have to friends my age, I don't want to lose that." 

Johnny smiled. "This is the most exciting, dangerous thing I ever did...and it's all because of you."

"I never had anyone to stand up for me...I want to help you just like you helped me." 

Y/n turns around and looks at Johnny and Polaris with wonder. "You both know that we're dealing with assassin who can kill us at any time?"

"You'll protect us I'm sure of it." Polaris proclaimed. "Now tell us the new plan.

At Dr. Richards's lab

The laboratory was swarming of Shield agents, scientists with there heat sensors where all over while Emily and Reid was in the farthest corner. Emily wanted to become invisible when Nick Fury walked in, she was mentally preparing herself for Director Fury scolding.

"Sir, Robin found out the plant to stop her powers." Emily announced.

"I can see that." Nick remarked. "Agent Coulson, track Y/n's heat signatures." 

"Yes,sir." Agent Coulson voiced as he walks off.

"Dr. Richards, Shield would be happy to replace anything that was damaged." Nick stated.

"Thank you, Director Fury." Ried said walking over to Nick. "Y/n is extraordinary...a mutant with two abilities." 

"Yes doctor she is but she's also dangerous....Coulson update." Nick said.

"Sir, heat signatures spiked in East Midtown."

"Where?" 

".......At a bar called Crossroad."

Nick nods and the task force Agents walks out the room. "Agent Preston." 

When Director Fury called Emily her head snaps up to look at him. The uneasiness she feel because she knows she let him down. 

"You can go." Nick stated as he walks out the room, Emily stands there for a quick second dumbfounded. There's no way Director Fury was letting her off the hook she lost his daughter.

"Sir,I would like to be apart of the task force that brings Y/n in." Emily announced.

Annoyed, Nick turns around and looks at Emily. "The task force is not to bring Y/n in it's to protect the people." 

"Sir, I didn't mean for anything of this to happening...." Emily trailed off.

"I'll deal with your lack of responsibility later." Nick stated as he walks out the room.

As it slowly becomes dusk Y/n, Johnny, Polaris, and Jean makes it to the hideout and they're stunned. The hideout doesn't look like anything they imagined. Johnny was expecting a mansion and Polaris some what of an old Victorian house, but Y/n knew. Not every thing is what it seem, that's what Gambit would say. All because it looks bad on the outside doesn’t mean it's bad on the inside. The perfect hideout...one they wouldn't expect. 

"Is this really it?" Johnny said, as he looke at the rickety shed with disappoint. 

"Yes, this is it, Jean put in your code." 

Jean walks up to the door and punches in his code.

"Ok. So you remember the plan?" 

"Yes." Polaris said. 

"Vaguely." Johnny teased.

"Johnny...." Y/n stated.

"I'm just kidding." Johnny laughed. "The first sign of danger I'm running out the door or to you." 

The door opens and Jean starts to walk downstairs.

Y/n exhale, she looks at Johnny then Polaris and they both nod there heads. "Ok...let's do this."

As the Trio follows Jean down the stairs the door closes by itself with a loud clang, it echoed through the long hallway. Johnny leaning towards Y/n holding on to her navy blue hoodie. Y/n looks over at Johnny with knitted brows and a puckered forehead.

"I'm protecting you by being close." Johnny proclaimed. 

Y/n smiles mocking at Johnny. As they make it to the end of the hallway there's a another door.

"Jean, passcode." 

Jean puts in code and he opens the door leading them into a grand foyer. Polaris looks around with her jaw gaping. It was beautiful the interior design was amazing, there was all types of furniture that she's never seen before. 

"Remember, if I'm not back after you taken all the money leave without me." Y/n stated.

Polaris whips her head in Y/n's direction. "No, Y/n that wasn't apart of the plan...." Polaris stressed. 

"Ya, she's right we aren't leaving without you." Johnny agreed.

"I just want to keep you guys safe..." Y/n explained. 

"Y/n..." Polaris trailed off.

 "Jean, tell me where Odessa Drake is." Y/n said. She didn't have time to argue with them, if need be she would make them leave.

"Left hallway second door on the right." Jean told.

"Good, now take Polaris and Johnny to the vault and put all the money on a flash drive, then make your way back to the foyer." Y/n commanded. 

Jean nods then zombies walks off. 

"We leave together." Polaris said with an firm persistence.

Y/n nod. "Go." 

With one last look, Polaris and Johnny turns an walks after Jean. 

Y/n exhaled. "Maximum Effort." 

Y/n turns and starts to walk down the long hallway.

The car ride to Crossroad was quite Nick was thinking of what could possibly possess Y/n to lash out like that. It would be for the greater good if her second power was gone, right? To Nick, Y/n’s second ability was an eye sore. He ever like it when Y/n would use that power in front or around him. It was to painful, to know that his daughter had went though all those horrible things doesn’t sit right and it ever will.

"Sir, I have an update." Phill announced. 

Nick nods.

"The bar is owned by someone in the assassin group called Thieves Guild."

Phill turns the laptop around to show Nick the information.

"Sir, what does this mean?" Phill asked. 

"I know where Y/n going." Nick said hiding is uneasiness.

Erik and Emma walks up to the shed.

"You sure this is the right place?" Erik asked.

"Yes. The closer we get to her the stronger her psychic power is." Emma replied. 

"Good." 

With the wave of his hand Erik rips the door off its hinges and they proceed to walk down the stairs. When they reach the final door, Erik touches the keypad causing it to go in the fritz in the door unlocks. They walk through the door and stand in the grand foyer.

"Right, which way is she?" Erik said in a curious tone.

"I can't tell her psychic power is coming from both hallways." Emma said in a level way.

"I'll take left you take right." Erik said

"Meet in the middle." Emma voiced.

With a nod Eric and Emma go there separate ways.

Y/n walks into the room and sees a large deck with an black leather office chair. The the church starts to squeak as someone rocks it side to side. Y/n sense that there was someone in this room before she even came in so this was not a surprise. 

"I’ve been expecting you...your the girl from the bar?" 

The person in the chair turns around to face Y/n and it reveals to be Odessa Drake the woman that Y/n been looking for. 

"Let me guess the barkeep told you." Y/n said. 

Odessa's eyes slightly widen.

"Since she told you i was coming, then you know why I’m here. Y/n remarked. 

"That I don’t know…but I do know you have a Special ability." Odessa stated. "What is that telekinesis?" 

"Something like that." Y/n replied.

"What do you want?" Odessa wondered. 

"I want you out of New York." Y/n said with an firm persistence. 

Odessa laughs a hearty laugh. "I have roots here-"

"Then dig them up." Y/n snapped.

All amusements from Odessa's face drains she stands up and slowly walks towards Y/n. "Who are you to tell me what to do?"

Who I am isn't important, but what's going to happen is you and everyone else a part of this group is going to leave New York." Y/n said leaving no room for arguing. "Oh and while you at it you're going to leave Gambit alone."

"Gambit..." Odessa trailed off. "So that what all of this is about." 

Odessa laughed then walks back over to her chair and sits down. She opens up a draw and grabs a folder then throws it on the desk. "Go ahead look at it. 

Y/n grabs the folder and opens it in her eyes widen as she reads it.

"You see we're not hunting Gambit Gambit is working for us." Odessa stated.

"No no this is wrong, Gambit would never go back to them not after what they did." Y/n proclaimed.

"Of course he would, if it means keeping someone he loves out of danger." Odessa remarked.

Y/n looks at Odessa with her eyes narrowed. 'What..?"

"Oh yes, you see Gambit has this child that he's very fond of and the leaders noticed what she can do. So we told him if he does not come back, we will find her and turned her into the Ultimate Weapon..... Ultimate Assassin." Odessa explained with an smirk. 

Y/n's hands tightened into fists, her eyes darting, and her breathing quickened. "It's my fault.." all nearby objects in the room suddenly starts to float. She hasn't been able to been in contact with him because he was protecting her. 

Odessa being caught up into her personal Victory didn't notice what was going on around her. "People will do anything to protect the ones they love...even kill." Odessa said smugly, rocking back and forth in her chair.

Y/n hung her head. "Gambit...." Y/n whispered. She didn't know how long should be able to hold back the tears but as soon as she was about to let her tears run like a river, she was overcome by calmness.

 Suddenly Y/n starts laughing and Odessa swallows. "The only time I can come out is when Y/n is filled with nothing but sadness and despair. I flare up every now and then with anger, but it's sadness that gives me full control."

"What are you talking about?" Odessa wondered.

Y/n tilted her head to the side and looks at Odessa with an curiosity. "What are you plans for Gambit?" 

"We're going to use him until he gets captured again." Odessa said. 

"Wrong answer." Y/n replied.

As Y/n raises her hand Odessa Smiles at her. 

"You find something.....amusing?" Y/n questioned.

Odessa laughed. "You can't kill me, I'm immortal. I have a demon inside me."

"I've eaten Stars you won't even be a notch on my belt." Y/n said as her eyes glow red.

"What are you?" Odessa whispered. 

"I....am the Phoenix." Y/n said with a sinister smile, as she slowly stocks towards Odessa. Flames started to appear all around Y/n. 

As Erik gets closer he hears a screaming, so he takes off running to the room. When he walks into the room he see a Woman floating over a scorch spot on the floor.

"What's this....reinforcements?" Y/n wondered, as she let's the Odessa drop to the floor.

Erik didn't even budge, he had no clue what was going on. 

"Are you apart of the Thieves Guild?" Y/n asked with her back to Erik.

"No, I'm here looking for someone." Erik replied.

"Really? Whom might you be looking for?" Y/n asked as she turns around looking at the man.

When Erik saw the color of her eyes and knew.

"Y/n?”

Ohoho! THAT is going to cause a LOT of fighting! But... it MAY just bring them all together- Let's try it:

They dealt with crazy every week.

They dealt with Sentinels, dealt with Magneto and the Professor and their weird relationship, even dealt with anti-mutant jerks.

They didn't know how to deal with a toddler who somehow shared all their DNA.

"How... how is that even possible?" Scott asks, taking a seat like he's about to faint.

"When did anyone get all of our DNA? Who took it, the government?" Lance snorts, pacing.

"Well, seems like the little dawg is related tos all of us, so... which one of us gets to keep 'em?" Toad chips in.

"..."

"Well, obviously not you!" Kitty says. "They'd be better off with us!"

"Yeah! Ve're great vith kids!" Kurt adds, picking up the tiny tot, who happily hits his arm.

"Why should y'all get to keep 'em? You already have plenty of team members," Fred mumbles. Todd hops up onto his shoulder, then snags the tot with his tongue, depositing them in his arms.

"Ew! Keep your slimy hands off of them!" Rogue hisses, going over and trying to grab the toddler back.

"Toad. Hand them to me," Wanda orders, butting in and stepping on several feet to get there.

"Why should they be with you? We're cooler," Evan calls out from by the window, only to almost be knocked over by Pietro, who speeds around the room.

"HA, in your dreams, Daniels! Obviously WE are cooler!" Pietro chortles.

The room soon devolves into shouts and yelling as the teens argue over who gets to keep their new sibling, soon forgetting that the little tyke is still in there with them... Until-

"Baaaaaaaaah!"

The tot starts crying, loud enough that the nearest mutants cover their ears in pain.

"Shhh, shhhh, sweetie, it's okay," Rogue says, quickly powering through the discomfort and picking up the crying toddler.

"Hey, it's okay, little rock," Lance tries, soon rubbing their back as they start calming down.

"Yes, please stop crying, vittle one. You can even pet me! Yes, pet the fluffy kitty, right?" Kurt adds, and soon the various teenagers are crowding them, promising to stop fighting and to do whatever the tiny tot wants, apologizing for making them upset.

"Guys..." Scott starts. The others turn to look at him. "I think... that Reader just united our teams."

"Holy Mother of Rocks... You're right," Lance gasps quietly.

The teens look at their tater tot, who's happily playing with Kurt's tail and Toad's webbed hand. It doesn't take them any longer to call a truce, and to set up a schedule so they all get to spend time with their little sibling.

What they didn't know was that the adults were listening in from the next room over, and making their own plans to hang out with their new child...

Who knew such a little tot could unite the two bickering teams for good?

Later that night, Ororo was still trying to fix the jet as Jean emerged from the underbelly and turned towards her. She sighed, running a hand through her hair. “I’ll try it again.”

She walked past Rogue, who slept next to Bobby, his arm was wrapped around her. Next to them, Pyro sat, angrily watching Kurt as he hung from a tree by his tail, asleep.

Logan tried to sleep in his text, wrapping in his sleeping bag and extra blanket, but it wasn’t long until Logan’s eyes sprung open as the tent flap silently slipped apart. A female figure entered. It was Jean. She sat on his sleeping bag as he eyed her curiously, opening his mouth to speak. She pressed her finger to his lips.

“No.” She crawled on top and began to kiss him. He kissed back, sliding his hand under her shirt before his claws pressed against her abdomen. He looked at her as she looked back and smirked, her eyes then turned yellow as she transformed into Mystique, her true form. Her mouth traveled to his ear. “No one ever left a scar quite like you.” She whispered as Logan narrowed his eyes.

“What do you want, an apology?” He asked as Mystique just sat up.

“You know what I want.”

“But, what do you want?” He asked as she then suddenly transformed to Ororo, then with a smile to Rogue, then to Stryker.

Logan throws her to the ground, and Mystique chuckles lightly, “What do you really want?” She then slowly transformed into you, as Logan narrowed his already narrowed eyes and growled lightly.

“I want you to get out.”

She sneered and snapped back into her true form, but before leaving, she turned to Logan, "I see the way you look at her."

The next morning, the X-Jet lifted up into the glowing morning sky. Rogue, Bobby, and Kurt watched Logan and Ororo suit-up into their battle uniforms, attaching small black receivers to their ears. Logan tossed a radio earpiece to you as you were adjusting your boots, and you caught it skillfully before it fell to the ground.

“Where’s ours?” Bobby asked, as Logan gave him a brief glance.

“On order. Should arrive in a few years.” Logan said, making you laugh out loud lightly, causing Bobby, Rogue, and Logan to look at her.

“Come on, Teach. Tell us we are not going to stay here for this mission?”

Bobby asked you, as you gave the teen a small smile, shrugging.

You readjusted the earpiece in your ear, “Well, sadly, yes. In a place full of snow, we don’t really need your help. Sorry, Bobby.” You replied as you pulled your X-Men leather jacket on.

Bobby gave out a huff as Ororo called Rogue up to the cockpit.

Rogue moved towards the controls, Bobby following close behind, holding onto the back of the cockpit seat. Ororo pointed appropriately to the controls and displays. “After we touch down and go in, you’re in charge. If something happens to us… Use the ascension control to get the plane off the ground. Do not try to control the plane while it’s in the air. The auto-navigation system will fly you home.��� She explained to the young girl, who nodded, slightly nervous about the whole idea.

“Then what?” Bobby asked as Logan entered the cockpit.

“You’ve all got superpowers. Figure it out.”

In the back of the jet, Magneto sat across from Pyro. He held his helmet in his lap as the young boy just stared at him. “They say you’re the bad guy.” Pyro said, as Magneto gave him a small grin.

“Is that what they say?”

Pyro eyed the helmet. “That's a dorky looking helmet. What’s it for?”

He asked and Magento spoke up again.

“This dorky looking helmet is the only thing that’s going to protect me from the real bad guy. What’s your name?” He asked and Pyro shifted in his seat, straightening his back. 

“John.” Pyro replied.

“What’s your real name, John?” Magneto asked before Pyro answered once more.

Pyro thought for a moment. Apprehensive, he flicked his lighter open and began to play with the small flame. “Pyro.” He finally replied.

“That’s quite a talent you have there, Pyro.” Magneto said, as the boy in question looked up at the older man.

“I can only manipulate it. I can’t create it.” He spoke, but Magento just gave him a grin. 

“You are a God among pests. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”

Stryker sat on the edge of a chair, bouncing a ball against a wall. Anne began to turn on the monitor, one by one. Each monitor displayed Charles’s children in custody.

“Why keep the children here, if they’re just going to die?” Anne asked Stryker as he continued to toss the ball at the wall.

“Why? So we can make sure that it’s working.” He answered as Anne turned back to the monitors.

Above the skies of Alkali Lake, the X-Jet hovered in the air. You, Logan, Jean, and Ororo assembled around a floating 3D hologram that showed a photographic terrain map of the landscape. Magneto and Mystique also perceived, but stood back a bit. Logan looked strongly at it, staring at it as he thought. The dam, tunnels, and Alkali base are all visible. From the naked eye, nothing but snow met the base and dam.

Jean clicked a button. “This is a topographic map of the area.” She spoke, before the holographic map suddenly changed into a brilliant red, with differing degrees of pink and white marks that serve repetitive impact over time. “And here are the recent density changes. The lighter the mark, the heavier the activity.” She continued, gesturing to the screen once more.

They saw a list of white lines come out of the right tunnel. Logan shook his head with a sly smile. “That’s the entrance.”

Jean switched the map once again. It turned crystal blue with varying degrees of white and blue water activity. The entrance tunnel and spillway are all dark blue. “This shows the depth of the ice that covers the ground, water movement.”

Ororo leaned closer to the screen, the gears in her head turning, “If we all go in here, he could flood the spillway.” She then said, pointing to the spillway.

Jean looked to Kurt. “Can you teleport inside?” She asked him as he shook his head.

“I have to be able to see where I’m going, otherwise I could wind up inside a wall.” He explained as Jean sighed and turned to you.

“What about you?” You sadly shook your head, your hair getting in your face slightly.

“I can’t. After reading Logan's mind I can't really do much right now." You raised your hand to brush the stray strands away.

There was a long pause before Logan spoke, “I have an idea.”

Logan walked alone down the spillway corridor. He came upon the run-off shafts and gazed into the corridor on the right. No sign of water. He carefully continued inside. “Stryker!” His voice reverberated through the massive tunnel. “It’s me. Wolverine!” Logan yelled. He walked further into the tunnel, still, no signs of water. Above him, a small video camera in the shadows watched Logan approaching.

In the control room, Wilkins, a fatigued guard, looked up to see Logan on one of the monitors. Anne looked over his shoulder. “What do you want me to do?” Wilkins asked as the woman stared down at the monitors.

“Flood it.” She demanded as Wilkins moved for a button.

His finger just brushed the button before Stryker stopped him, “Wait.” He peered over their shoulders and smiled. “Is he alone?”

“Yes, sir.” Wilkins replied.

Wilkins had his finger on the button, waiting. Stryker pauses, thinking.

“Send a team, and bring him to me in the North Corridor. Carefully.”

Stryker said to Anne and she was quick to stand and lead a few men to get Logan.

In the spillway tunnel, Logan walked cautiously through the tunnel. In front of him, a section of the wall opened and three soldiers emerged, their rifles up. Behind him, another wall opened and three more soldiers appeared. Logan was surrounded. “Don’t move! Hands in the air!” A soldier commanded, his gun raised.

Oddly, Logan obeyed. With their guns raised they led Logan down a corridor, arms and feet shackled, guns to his head. Stryker waited for them at the end. As he approached Logan, he stared at him closely, staring into his eyes, the cocky grin on his face suddenly faded. “Who do you think you’re looking at?” Stryker asked as Anne looked at him confused.

“Sir?” Anne asked.

“You make such a good impression on video, but in person.” Stryker said to Logan.

He lifted a gun to Logan’s head, finger on the trigger. Logan quickly converted into Mystique. Her arms, now thinner, slipped from the shackles, as did her legs and feet. She wrapped the shackles around Stryker’s gun, ripping it away, and knocking him into the wall. Immediately, two guards fired, she ducked, and the guards shot each other, as she did a handspring forward. Anne whipped out a pistol, but Mystique hit her arm as she fired. The bullet pierced a nearby pipe. Fumes shot out and packed the corridor. Stryker stood and tried to see through the steam. Mystique was gone. Stryker charged off and a living guard followed.

Alarms blared. Wilkins, the only guard left in the control room, nearly leaped out of his seat and began studying the monitors. On the monitors, Stryker walked quickly through the hall, accompanied by the guard. “What the…” Wilkins spoke confusedly.

The doors opened and Stryker and the guard entered. “Seal the room!” Stryker commanded.

Wilkins quickly did as he was told, and he pressed some buttons. Large doors pushed shut on the monitors. “What’s happening?” Wilkins asked urgently, eyes wide.

“We have a metamorphosis. She could be anybody.” Stryker explained. 

“Anybody?” Wilkins asked, his eyebrows raising.

Stryker hit Wilkins across the back of the head and he collapsed onto the floor; Stryker had become Mystique. She spin-kicked the guards, which knocked them out instantly. She then took his seat and connected a small headset to her ear. She pushed some buttons and pulled up a map of the base. “I’m in.” Mystique said through the headset.

In the spillway corridor, you, Magneto, Logan, Jean, Ororo, Kurt, stood high above the spillway corridor. “She’s good.” Logan spoke, as Magneto smiled proudly. 

“You have no idea.” Magneto replied.

At the same time, in the Control Room, the real Stryker stood outside the massive Control Room with Anne. He pushed a button to open it. It doesn’t budge. He tried again, but it was no use; he slammed the door with his hand.

“The door is twenty inches thick, sir.” Anne tensely watched Stryker lose control.

“Yes. But she’s in there. She’s in there and I’m out here!” Stryker said under his breath, breathing heavily.

Lyman walks up to them. “Sir, she’s opened the main entrance. More mutants have entered the base.”

“Can we flood the spillway?” Stryker asked quickly as Lyman pursed his lip.

“Everything’s controlled from inside the room.”

“Get the machine here, drill a hole through this door, and kill whoever’s inside. I don’t care who they look like.” Stryker demanded, letting out an exhale. He then turned to Anne and made a resolution. “They can’t stop anything. In twenty minutes they’ll all be on their knees. Evacuate the men and let loose our new recruit. Set the charges, and meet me in Augmentation. I’ll have my final chat with 143, then we’re leaving.”

This is a supplementary post for my step-family X-Men 97 adoption AU fanfic.

I don’t like leaving long ANs or making the reader memorize a ton of little details about the AU but here’s a list of things about the AU you should probably know and my thoughts behind them. Most of these things will be shown in the fic and this list contains no spoilers. It’s really just painting the setting.

Mutants exist and the public knows about them but the X-Men aren’t superheroes, they’re just kids hiding their superpowers.

Superheroes exist but we don’t really see them. Most of the Marvel comics I’ve read are from the 1960s so in my head it’s that more relaxed vibe where superheroes all mostly know each other but they’re not celebrities and the public just kind of goes “we’ll that’s New York” when they see them

You can picture whatever version of the character you want but this is a TAS/97 fic. With that in mind, Hank is in his pre-blue form. Also, I’m picturing Magneto as less sexy, more old (but not older), and more German than he is in 97.

Rouge does not have Ms. Marvel’s powers yet

(Not really a spoiler but kind of) Jubilee and Bishop don’t have their powers yet since those normally develop in teen years. Morph unlocked his powers pretty young for plot related reasons.

Morph is non-binary but does not know it yet so it isn’t really mentioned.

The fic does take place in 1997 but it’s not a significant detail

Given your evident love of magneto what are your thoughts on the man who arguably began his more modern interpretations Chris Claremont? I’ve hard a decent amount of criticism on how often he used kitty pride to say the N word.

I think Claremont was wrong for having Kitty say the N-word outright and I think as a non-Black man his decisions to have the word be used and make a direct comparison between the oppression Black people face and the oppression the fictionalized mutants face were misguided.

It's one thing to make an allegory, it's another to make a one-on-one comparison when Claremont himself is not Black. Claremont is Jewish, and therefore his explicit comparison of the oppression mutants face in his universe to antisemitism is something he is at liberty to explore. He does also makes many explicit comparisons to the Holocaust in his runs, and as a Jew I don't really have an issue because he is a Jewish man and the comparisons were made my Magneto, a Jewish character.

This is one of the incidents of Kitty saying the N-word, in Claremont's hit story "God Loves, Man Kills":

The context of this is that Kitty got into a fight with some other teens because they were espousing anti-mutant rhetoric. Stevie Hunter, her ballet teacher, tells her to calm down. Kitty, being a teenager, got fired up at Stevie's passivity, and tries to make a point.

Of course, we as readers know that as a Black woman, Stevie knows from experience to keep her head down, but to Kitty Pryde, a white-passing person who had only discovered her powers (and new marginalized status) mere years before, is not used to this new marginalization. I say "new marginalization" because Kitty has always been a marginalized character even before her mutation, being Jewish. Kitty, especially in the runs under Claremont, is drawn as not just openly Jewish with her Star of David necklace and numerous references to her Jewishness, but also racialized as Jewish with her thick, dark curly hair (a stereotype of Ashkenazi Jews). But as a light-skinned generally white-passing Jew from the suburbs of Chicago, it's likely she didn't experience as much antisemitism as much as Stevie faced antiblackness.

I think the real issue is less of Kitty saying the word but rather in the next panel Stevie saying that she was right to make that comparison. In the X Men universe, the mutants are a marginalized class, but so are Black people. I think Claremont was trying to shift the themes of the X Men narrative as being not just an allegory for the Holocaust, but also for Civil Rights (Indeed, the opening scene of God Loves, Man Kills, is of two Black children being lynched by a religious extremist mob), but he did so rather clumsily by our standards.

The time Kitty did say the N-word intentionally as an insult was in Uncanny X-Men #196:

This exchange occurs after Kitty overhears Phil and his friends plotting against other mutants. She barges in, and they turn on her (they end up knocking her out and kidnapping her). I do not think it was appropriate for Kitty to use the N-word in this way, and I don't think Claremont should have written her as saying such, but in the context it is one marginalized person calling another person a targeted slur, and the other person responding in turn. Not appropriate, but in the scene it is an emotionally charged moment where both sides of the exchange are in the wrong.

The final instance I can think of where Kitty uses the N-word is in conjunction with a bunch of other slurs to give an example. She is giving a speech at a school where one of the students committed suicide because of the anti-mutant bullying he faced. While I did censor the instances of the N-word in the previous two images, I'm not going to do so for this one because it's in conjunction with a bunch of other slurs, and if I censored each one, the context would be lost.

Kitty calls herself a series of slurs and insults (notably, an antisemitic slur. Remember, Kitty is a proud Jew). She then lists off other slurs, which includes the N-word, but also an anti-Latino slur, an anti-Italian slur, an anti-Asian slur, and the F-slur. She also uses "Mutie" again, which is an anti-mutant slur in the Marvel universe. To our modern ears (or rather, eyes), this is inappropriate, but this was published in 1983 and the ideas we have today about not saying slurs even in non-targeted ways weren't the same.

I think Kitty's usage of the N-word (and other slurs) is used to make it obvious to the readers that the mutant narrative is an allegory for other narratives in our world, namely racism, antisemitism, and homophobia, but it isn't done perfectly. If it was a Black mutant character making these comparisons, just like Magneto is a Jewish mutant making direct comparisons to the Holocaust, it might read a bit better. I don't know for sure, and I'm not Black myself, but perhaps then it would be slightly more appropriate. Kitty was written to be a very outspoken character who says things as they are, but it wasn't her place as a non-Black person to make those direct comparisons, even if she herself is marginalized in other ways.

As for Claremont himself........I think he is a legend and despite his controversies, the X Men, and Magneto especially, wouldn't be the icons they are today. Claremont took the X Men from a run-of-the-mill superhero team and Magneto from a run-of-the-mill villain and made them inherently political and an explicit allegory for other issues present in our world. This tradition that Claremont started has only continued with other Marvel writers drawing parallels between queer issues and mutant issues, and fan speculation about parallels with disability rights (which I would love to see tackled in canon). Claremont's contributions to the X Men canon are invaluable, and I loved what he did with Magneto. Is he perfect? Of course not. You'd be hard pressed to find a writer who is. I think he tried to tell a story, and sometimes stumbled just by virtue of his own inexperience with the identities he was trying to depict, and suffered from trying to make too many explicit references to real world events and issues (Which many comic writers in his time struggled with). And, notably, he hasn't continued to make those mistakes in more recent publications, which I think is significant.

Into The Spider-Verse: Spider-Man, Miles Morales (Ultimate Fallout #4, Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man #1-5)

Hello all you happy wallcrawlers! It's time to once again swing into the Spider-Verse as we cover the various people who've worn the mask across the merry marvel multiverse, all building to a look at Into The Spider-Verse in time for it's sequel.

So naturally after looking at the humble origins of the first spidey as he battled with loneliness, fame, dead uncles and of course Crackers and Milk, it's only fair we look at the actual protaganist of the film, the ultimate spider-man, the one the only Miles Morales!

To properly get into Miles and his origins in the comics though we have to talk about the world he was created for: The Ultimate Universe. The Ultimate Universe was the idea of then editor Bill Jemas, who felt Marvel's massive continuity could be daunting to the new readers the company badly needed after the comics crash and marvel's subsquent bankruptcy.

So he tapped writer Brian Micheal Bendis. Starting with Spidey.. honestly makes perfect sense to me, as while a major part of the marvel universe, his corner is diverse and unique enough to carry itself and to see if this could work, something EIC Joe Quesada had doubts about, doubts he somehow didn't have later for the character when he decided "Huh you know I don't like his marriage because my ship didn't win, maybe I should just have satan break it up eh?", born of a previous attempt, not helped by Bendis famous love of using decompressed storytelling, i.e. spreading a story out over several issues instead of packing it into one or two barring big sagas.

Despite these doubts from Quesada and from Artist Mark Bagely.. the book was a MASSIVE hit. It likely helped Ultimate's stripped down back to basics peter was a RELIEF after the complex shenanignas of the clone saga nad after. It was just what people loved: a down on his luck kid dealing with usual life struggles while also having to fight crime on top of that. It had a bunch of nice updates too that would become a staple of adaptations from here on out: Harry Osborn being a close friend from the start, MJ being a high school friend of peters, and Aunt May being a cool old lady instead of on the precipice of death, something that would carry over. This success helped revitalize the main spider-man with JMS' fantastic run.. that granted petered out into Sins Past and One MOre Day, but both are stories for another day.

Ultimate Spider-Man was such a hit the universe naturally expanded.. and that became a problem. See Bendis' ultimate spider-man really nailed the idea of the ultimate universe, a clean slate allowing the writers to really play around with things, while not threatning the main universe. Death was permenant, the stakes were high and it allowed new fans a godo start. Sure it buitl up it's own complex story, but with graphic novels plentefiul, it was easy to keep up. I read a good chunk of it in my teens and loved it and it seems to mostly still hold up.

The problem is out of the three spinoffs only one really got what you could do with the concept, Ultimate Fantastic Four, which simply made the team all teens connected to a fancy think tank while keeping the tight knit "family of choice" dynamic and adventure, simply in a more grounded context.

The other two were by mark millar

I'm not a fan of his, and these books are a large reason why. Ultimate X-Men is a mixed bag, having good ideas, such as a teenage storm and nightcrawler ala evolution along with a gay colossus, and the more military costumes ala new x-men, and is a book i'd love to review sometime now i'm more deeply entreinched in x-men, especially since I read that as a teen too, on the wohle it's got a LOT of edgelord in it's dna, with Jean sleeping with a 40 something year old wolverine, Wolverine trying to murder cyclops to get to jean, and Magneto being simply a racist dickhead. It has great parts and Brian K Vaughn's run after Millar's is even better, but it's just a bit too edgy for it's own good.

Ultimates however…

Ultimates is fucking awful. The designs and art are top notch, Thor , Cap , Hawkeye and Nick Fury all got their MCU designs here, but the actual story is a bunch of edgelord bullshit. IT's clear Millar at least had SOME respect for the x-men, but he hated the avengers and it shows: Tony is constantly drunk, Thor is a new agey asshole, Hawkeye and Black Widow are black ops murderers, and grossly the scarlet witch and quicksilver are mostly defiend by being a couple.

He also pissed me off personally as a fan of the ant family by making Jan an airhead, and making Hank's abuse and inferiority complex his entire character instead of the worst moment of life and his greatest flaw respectively, and had him ATTEMPT TO MURDER JAN. As you can probably guess i'll also have to tackle this at some point, and I wouldn't be suprised if one of my patrons inflicted this on me at some point via comission. Oh and of course we have Captain America, whose a racist sexist jingoistc asshole because Millar REALLY hates the character and considered the idealistic depecition of him being a progressive "unrelaistic. " It's bad and we'll get to it.

This edgelord apporach to these books worked at first as early 2000's audeinces ate that shit up, but eventually it reached it's apex, ironically after Millar had left. He was replaced by Jeph LOeb, who I don't care for as much these days but HAS made good stories. His ultimate work.. seems to be truly awful, with the confusing mess that was ultimates 3 and the utter nightmare that was ultimatium.

Ultimatium was a crossover event.. that started the universes march to death. Granted it took a while for it to kick in, but this crossover wrecked it so throughly it never really recovered> It was an edgelord mess where magneto killed most of new york, blob ATE the wasp on panel, and dozens upon dozens of characters died, with the x-men and ff utterly decimated and scattered as a result.

It killed Charles Xavier and Magneto which COULD'VE been intresting.. but in practice it just lead to more mediocre stories, a status quo no one liked, and exttra super duper mutant prejudice that was somehow legally legislated.

So why hash all of this out. It's simple, while the Ultimate Universe was in it's slow years long death spiral that would cumilate in the universe being wiped out in secret wars, though it may be making a comeback with Ultimate Invasion, there was one part of it that caught massive attention, did great sales and was critically loved. Just as he was the one to jumpstart the universe, Spider-Man was likely what kept it alive as long as it did, only the costume, and the person inside it both changed.

Miles came from editor axel alonso floating around the idea of a black spider-man in the ultimate universe shortly after Barack Obama won presdiency, though they decided not to introduce him post ultimatium as planned to give them time to work out the story for this. Bendis was further inspired by Donald Glover showing up in spider-man pajamas during the first episode of season 2 of community, a nod to Glover trying out for Amazing Spider-Man and somehow not getting the part. Glover would continue to be an influence on the character, and got to voice him in Ultimate Spider-Man and play his uncle aaron in Spider-Man Homecoming. Artist Sarah Pichelli designed his now iconic costume, smartly giving him the awesome looking black and red look, with the two color sbecome a staple of any version of miles costume while also serving as a nice nod to spider-man's orignal colors.

So now we have the behind the scenes stuff out of the way how did a 13 year old, yes really, from Brooklyn become the Ultimate Spider-Man? What happened to the previous one? And will anyone actually accept miles in the role? All valid questions, so swing with me under the cut as here comes a spider-man.

So naturally for Miles to take over… Peter Parker had to go. In this universe he was still a teen as like most comics despite a decade and change worth of continuity at this point, time moved slowly. But his life was going pretty well: he finally got back with Mary Jane Watson after a long time hinting towards it, Gwen Stacey, his friend and live in roomate, long story, forgave him, and after ultimatium new york loved the hell out of him.

So naturally this being spider-man, this coudlnt' last and soon his precious little life.. came to a tragic and epic end. This Peter was the character who really made Bendis' career, for better and for worse, so if he was going to die, Bendis was going to have him go down epically.

Like in our universe Peter's worst foe was the Green Goblin, only here he was more of a monster man and less a creepy guy in a suit, but no less psychotic or obessive, having attempted to kill MJ, actually killed his own son and peter's best friend, and in general been the worst. So wanting to kill peter once and for all, on his sixteenth birthday he broke out of jail, took the sinister six with him, and went on a rampage, heading straight for peter's loved ones. Peter went to intercept but had to stop the punisher from shooting captain america as a war between Frank's avengers and Captain America's ultimates, which was a thing that happened but I don't care enough to find out why. I have limits.

So while nursing a bullet wound, peter stared down his foes, with aunt may assiting by fucking shooting electro, putting him in a coma and as a result casuing his powers to go hawywire and narrow the fight down to just peter and Gobby. Sadly while Peter won… an explosion and his wounds from botht he fight and the bullet meant he didn't survivie it, but he got to go down defeating his greatest foe, saving those he loved like he coudln't save ben and in the arms of the girl he loved most.

So as a result the ultimate world was left a world without spider-man, and the ultimates themselves shook, paticuarlly cap who, as is his nature, was a massive dick to peter right before peter took a bullet for him. But it wouldn't be too long…

Miles was first intorduced at the tailend of ultimate fallout, a mini dealing with the fall out of this and setting up the three comics for the ultimate comics relaunch: ultimates by jonathan fucking hickman, which would end up vitally important ot his future works, x-men by nick spender and later sexual harassment brian wood and this very comic.

Miles part of it is very brief but well done: post peters death he shows up in the costume, battles d-list villian in any univers kangaroo, and admits the costume probbaly is in poor taste while taking it off to reveal a fairly young kid. and that spider-man is black. Which naturally isn't the shocker it should be after years of the character being rightfully promoted to hell and back.. nor was it then as it got revealed in the press ahead of time and was a big deal and put a LOT of expectation on the book.T here was also of course stupid racist idiot backlash about WEH THEY MADE SPIDER-MAN BLACK and your standard "people dont' get there's multiple versoins of this caharacter' misreporting, but it's best to plug your ear. My faviorite part of this coverage is that when I was binging it a while back, the comic strip baldo naturally comented on there being a prominent latino spider-man (again but we'll forgive cantu and costelanos for not knowing 2099 existed)

Tia Carmen being judgemental aside, it showed just how big a deal it was and thankfully the book was high quality enough to match thehype. So now we finally come to ultimate comics spider-man itself.

We open issue 1 with Norman Osborn citing the myth of arachne a while ago, back when he was a respectiable industrialist. This is how ULtimate Spider-Man #1 started though it almost feels like Bendis parodying himself as this time the guy listneing to osborn is bored and then thrown off when Norman threatens to kil lhim if he tells anyone this is how spider-man got his powers. Classic norman.

Anyways they do manage to make a new spider using peter's blood, as in this universe the oz serum was used on the spider, and then on norman himself instead of radioactivity and such. One of the spiders gets loose though with no one noticin

We cut to.. some time later as the Prowler, a masked thief in purple, breaks into Ozcorp.

Yeah it took a bit of googling to answer all of this, as I was confused both by Ozcorp still being around even after it's CEO publicly turned into a monster man and killed a bunch of his own employees, and by the spider somehow being ALIVE.

The former..was shockingly easy. It's nightmarishly hard, nay impossible to peg most comic universes into hard and fast years, with character ages being "whatever we need" and holidays being thrown around, not to mention countless time skips for story reasons to start off a run (Both Spider-Man and Fantastic Four just did this for their latest volumes). At this point i've just given up and say "it takes place because shut up" Granted I still peg peter parker as over 30 as anyone should, same with the original x-men and co, but that's not really the takeaway. So while a lot of stories have happened probably not a lot of time has passed.

Adding to that spiders live up to two years average according to a quick google and can live up to 20 in captivity… and of course this is a genetically altereted super spider, so in hindsgith I have to ask myself why that was one of my questoins to begin with.

Finally as for Ozcorp it's SOMEHOW still running. I mean a ceo's bad behavior not tankin ga company isn't unheard of: Papa Johns fired their racist as hell ceo and are doing just fine, and Tesla somehow manages to function despite it's ceo being Elon Musk. Really the questions I have say mroe about me than they do abotu the actual writing of htis comic.

Point is Prowler steals some neat stuff and accidently takes the spider with him. As for who he is.. well under the mask we'll naturally meet. As for overal the Prowler is new to this universe but is an old foe turned friend of spidey's in the main universe. Inventor Hobie Brown created a super villian persona in order to commit a crime, then return the money as himself to get funding. He fought spider-man about once, but the two became friends and Hobie wore the costume on and off. Prowler is also specail to mne as I had a guide to spider-man as a kid and the costume, backstory and intresting status as a former villian when most of spidey's foes really .. dont' stay reformed for long, comic books and all, have made him a faviorite of mine, and I ended up loving this version even more.

We then cut to our hero, Miles Morales, a kid about to enter middle school… and having to rely on pure chance to get into a good one. Miles is going with his parents, Jefferson and Rio to a charter school raffle something I still can't honestly belivie is a thing. A charter school is a fancy, private style school outside of the regular school system, that will have raffle for those in poorer areas and thus a child's future can literally be determined by a plastic ball. America everybody!

I love the choice by bendis to do this: Peter got to go to a pretty nice school simply by luck and where his grandma was, if a public one. For Miles to have a better chance.. he has to simply rely on luck and HOPE he gets it, and even fi he does.. it's at the expense of other kids who didn't quite make it.

You'll also have likely noticed the "Enter middle school part", especially if your more familiar with into the spider-verse, where he's 17 (even older than his 616 self), or most adaptations where he's a year or two older , usually to match peter. Yeah Bendis decided to further crank things up by making Miles way younger, forcing a child into this. I'm entirely used to this as most cartoons use 13 as the default age for their heroes, but it , like the ultimate universe did at it's best, uses htis realistically: this is a child thrown into this. Peter was only slightly older.. and the comic pulled zero punches showing how much this fucked with him. And now we'r ethrowing a younger chlid into an ultimate universe.. that's frankly only gotten worse; at this same time the goverments being torn down, more on that if I ever do any of the followup arcs, mutants are hunted and thrown into camps that are somehow legal, and new york just got flooded b y magneto 6 months ago. And i'ts only going to get somehow WORSE from there. A child is going to have to face all this.. and starts having to just wait for pure luck to get school.

While fate isn't on Miles side in inevetibly throwing him up against super villians, a collapsing us goverment and the end of the fucking world, TWICE, it is in getting into the Brooklyn Visions Academy. What I like is that artist Sarah Pichelli takes time to focus on two kids who DIDN'T get in and miles face after. It's simple but i'ts the clear guilt of a child who simply feels bad his getting a nice school means other kids didn't. HIs parents try to ease his guilt, but he ends up instead going later that day to visit his uncle Aaron. Uncle aaron.. both has solid advice.. and looks like this

Yup for whatever reason they decided to base Aaron on Snoop Dogg, and I for one loved his duet with kirby so i'm entirely for this

So i'm fully on board with this. Naturally Aaron is the prowler, and while he swipes whatever he stole from a curious miles, the spider bites his nephew, causing him to pass out. Naturally Aaron calls his brother.. who then accuses him of drugging his own nephew, yells at him, and is generally a dick, especially since while he told him to "stay away from my family".. MIles came here of his own free will and is ONLY here because Jefferson didn't tell Miles WHY he dosen't like his brother anymore. This naturally causes the small child to flee…., and to find out something new about himself.

Next issue Miles discovers he can also jump good and zap people, doing so when some idiots try to rob him.. but we also get a sense of WHY unlike both Peters, who were naturally excited to have dope new powers, Miles.. is fucking terrified. He thinks he's a mutant, and while we know he isn't, I was NOT joking about the camps thing. Since Magneto destroyed new yorks mutants are turbo hated and feared and if you've watched or read ANYTHING x-men related, you know the regular hated and feared is bad enough.

Miles goes to one of the best parts of this book and his best friend Ganke, a loveable chubby lego loving lad. It's a funny sequence at first as miles tries to do the invsiblity thing but instead looks like he's about to take a dump (Ganke's words) and then displays his other power by destroying.. something Ganke had been hard at work on with Ganke begging him not to try it again on something that took him three weeks.

Ganke thinks the powers are dope.. and is the rational one here, realizing that mutant powers wouldn't manifest overnight, and that he got bit by a spider with the bite suddenly disappering. They don't have time to figure things out as Jefferson tries to prove to his son he's a calm reatoinsal indivdual.. by barking at him to come with him and then asking him this

While Jefferson.. has good reasons… what I like about this is while he is sympathetic, something bad could've happened to miles.. and nearly DID had he not found out he has spider powers.. Jefferson is also an asshole, often far too stern and gruff at this point for his own good. It takes him a minute to get why maybe accusing his brother of hurting him, yelling at his son, then yelling at his son AGAIN and yanking him out of somehwere he feels safe might be rattling, and as we'll learn right after this.. Jefferson is a racist towards mutants, blaming them for things. What makes it work though is that he's complicated… his reason for being so hard on aaron.. is that both of them used to be criminals, which gives nice weight ot what Aaron said earlier: NEITHER of them want Miles to end up like them and to have a better life, not having to steal and do worse just to get by. The diffrence is Aaron stayed in the game while Rio convinced Jefferson to turn his life around. Granted his whole understandable speech about "You shoudl feel you can open up to me" gets ruined by his bigoted statments towards the all new all ultimate x-men a second later I hinted at, but it still shows Jefferson is'nt just an asshole or in the case of pre-character development 616 aunt may, an obstacle just so Miles can't easily reveal his identity. Instead Miles has good reason as his dad hates superheroes and may not have a heart attack but as we've seen can be quick to rash decisions. He'd come around eventually but to a 13 year old kid already scared at what he's becoming, this may not be something he wants to risk dealing with.

At any rate the next night Ganke texts miles with a bunch of message board bits that can basically be summed up as "Your a spider-man, spider-man, genetically altered spider-man" and a bit of celing crawling confirms this to Miles horror. Onto issue 3 as Miles naturally goes to Ganke again and I like the continuing contrast, likely mirroring the two types of reader this would hit: Ganke sees the escapism element and the awesome: MIles has fucking spider-man powers and now can be a spider-man. This is so cool! Miles… is the more realistic reaction, not wanting to throw himself in danger. Ganke also easily figures out that the spider was an experiment: miles mentioned numbers, normal spiders dont' have that, case closed. While Ganke is clearly operating off of a 13 year old nerd's perspective, he's not exactly wrong. He's also got a howard the duck shirt, which adds nothing to anything, I just think it's neat.

Ganke also convinces miles to go visit Aaron. Miles is reluctant given well.. everything that just happened yesterday, but Ganke has a point: he's the only one who'd know what the hell is going on and might be able to help them, sketchy or not. Naturally though after brothegeddon, Aaron has bugged out, pun not intended, as he had other buisness to attend to...

So Miles is on his own in figuring this out and finding a way to try his powers out

Cue plot convience as a fire has broken out and Miles charges in there to help… and once again we get a nicely realistic reaction: While Ganke is , like us an observer and sees what miles did as cool.. Miles is still a 13 year old that just charged into a burning buildling so while he did good and saved some people… he also is scared out of his mind, seeing the current spider-man as having action as his reward and loving it , not getting that peter was also scared out of his mind, but hey , that's part of why you wear the mask. He cries and decides not to do it and Ganke reluctantly agrees. It shows not EVERYONE would be super hyped to do this and not everyone has to: at the time there is STILL a spider-man. Ther'es no reason for miles to use these. .yet.

Our heroes get moved in, as naturally Ganke is Miles roomate along with Judge. He's mostly around to make hiding Miles identity difficult. He's alright. He likes legos. At any rate we get a nice montage of Miles having nice classes and being encouraged to read… before a not so nice nightmare of electro killing him…. and this turns out ot be prophetic as news of peter being shot has hit.. and his death is in progress.

Taking a moment between issues , i'd like to take a moment ot discuss how much I love the pacing here. While decompressed storytelling can be bad, there have been event comics that coudl've easily been a few issues shorter and didn't need tie in one shots and shit, this comic shows why when Bendis or others using it are at their best, it works well. We're three issues in and HAVNE'T seen miles really be spider-man yet. We saw it in ultimate fallout, but that was a jump foward and maybe a few pages, pages many readres probaly don't see. Yet everything here is important: it defines who miles his, who his family is, lets us meet hima nd get to know him as a shy, inquisitive, smart young man whose DEEPLY terrified of what he's been thrown into. Some comics would try to jam in flash fowards as him as a hero to get more action in.. but Bendis gets that's not really wha'ts important. It's awesome and the superhero stuff matters, it's why the comics called ultimate comics spider-man and not ultimate comics: miles morales, but who this character is, why he's doing this and why he does things matter> He's a kind, empathetic boy unsure of his place in the world. It's the key to a good superhero comic: you have to care about the hero or heroes at the core as a person, or it just dosen't work. And this.. this works.

So next issue, Miles has Ganke cover for him to go see what's going on and arrives just as Peter smashes norman's head in and collapses, being happy he could save those he loved as htey all sob. Miles saw peter's death and it was likely planned by Bendis he'd been there the whole time, but it's a nicely done retcon, if you can even call it that, as MIles is angeld off camera and the only thing we see from him is asking Gwen who he was.

And the next day… Miles blames himself. In a nice twist of fate… Peter is his uncle ben and his reasons for not having acted are way more undrestandable.. but it's understandable why Miles feels this way: he could've done something, he coudl've helped. Ganke does help again though.. this time not with wide eyed fanboying but again showing that while Miles is emotonally and empathetic and thus blames this on himself, Ganke his logical and thus uses the logic to help miles; He could've helped.. or he could've died too. He did get these powers for a reason.. but it wasn't to pitch in not knowing his powers and to die… but that with Peter gone… Miles can take up the mantle. It dosen't come off as wide eyed as before either but just one friend helping another realize both what he can do with his powers.. and that this death isn't his fault. Peter died a hero.. and while Miles could easily share the same fate he can also do what was right.

Miles isn't convinced though and they go to peter's funeral the next day. We do get a nice moment with Gwen Stacey. In this continuity Gwen was a close friend of peters, being his best friend besides MJ. They dated very breifly in the previous volume.. but it was clear Peter was still hunt up on MJ and only lasted to just before his death, and was never really something fans liked. Still she was close to him, a major supporting character.. and will continue to be here eventually. Not during this arc, she and Aunt Man, her legal guardian and surrgoate mom hence why the romance thing also felt kind of eugh, are going off to france for a bit to mourna nd do some work for tony stark (his mentorship of peter, while breifer and less involved, was taken from this universe), Miles does have a question: Why did he do it? and her answer.. is one of my faviorite moments int he book:

It sums up Spider-Man perfectly: He does it because something that wasn't his fault he still felt responsible for, it's the right thing to do and the mask is both because he wants to protect those close to him.. and because it looks fucking cool. As are you gwen, as are you.

That night Ganke brings Miles something from home: his halloween costume from last year.. the bombastic bag man@!

No of course it's spidey and this leads into the scene we saw earlier, miles first outing where he does beat the kangaroo if barely.. but everyone thinks him doing this is in bad taste. Aftewords Miles is understandably freaked given being told your disrepsecting the dead man your TRYING to honor isn't a great start, and the boys discover they can't lock the room as it isn't policy and the dorm guy's a real dick about it. Like.. did you tell them this at orentation? and if so WHY did you put locks on the rooms? I mean I get it if a shooter comes in or something but why not have electronic locks then. Also why would Miles being seen be an issue just say he was doing some cosplay, most people arne't going to connect the dots. What i'm saying is this scene, while necessary to set up the unique challenges miles has, is very dumb.

MIles decides to try again the next night though, and we get a nice bit of internal monologuin as he enjoys this… right before a bad case of boot to the head

It's obviously spider-sense. This isn't Funky Winkerbean.. but whose boot it is… isn't good for Miles

Okay so while the comic itself dosen't explain it, i'll explain who Spider-Woman is. In the Main Timeline it's.. a lot to unpack: She's a private eye whose dad experimented on her. It's a very long story ill get into more another time, possibly next year when we do this all again for Beyond the Spider-Verse with the spider-men and women from Across. I love her and her solo series which is on my very giant to do list.

This Jessica Drew has the same name.. but is actually a clone of peter complete with memories but as a woman, woh works closely with shield and has joined the ultimates. I don't know much about her, just that she saw peter like a brother for understandable reasons.. and that she's naturlaly very pissed at the small child wearing his costume without realizing it's a small child. So we've come to our final issue for today, and the confrontation.. goes how you'd expect. Jessica demands to know who Miles is… Miles not knowing there was a spider-woman or WHY she's taken this personally refuses, and it's a comedy of errors as she webs him up , he tries to go to the cops and she takes him to the Triskeleion, headquarters of the Ultimates and finds himself in a cell.. and in front of the ultimates, or at least Nick Fury, Jessica, Iron Man and Hawkeye. Cap is missing and that's a good thing. We'll deal with him, much like gwen, if we pick this up again another day.

For now Nick questoins what he actually DID, while Tony finds out he's enhanced to everyon'es shocked.. and Clint rightly points out Jessica could've asked him instead of laying in screaming. While it's understandable why she opened the coversation with boot to the head… it also meant MIles tried to you know run and get the police instead of actually talk to her. Nick Fury shoes everyone out. Nick is a bit more of a bastard here, and given 616 Nick Fury (the older one not the one resembling this nick whose that nick's son because comics everybody) tried to buy out Tony Stark's company to force him to make weapons again and once lead a bunch of heroes on an unsanctioned black ops mission he didn't tell them was unsanoctioned, that's a low bar to clear but manipulating other universers and basically telling Peter "When your 18 your ass belongs to me" before easing up into "Okay we'll just train you and stuff), he clears it.

He's more sympathetic here, clearly having grown a bit and thus is gentle with miles. While he's frustrated with miels just kind of nervously spouting off whatever, the humor in this book is really good and makes me question why Bendis is so awful at it not long after this, he's gentle asking if his parents want to let him know, letting him know he knows aaron was the one who gave him the spider.. and it turns out while Jefferson coudl've handled things better… yeah Aaron is an fbi wanted criminal not just a small time one so.. good call on keeping his son away. Or trying to anyway. Nick understands though: With great power comes great repsonsiblity. He also gets i'ts you know a child.

But naturally things can't go easy as Electro is under sedation..a nd the nurse gave him 10cc's instead ofa 100 meaning he's awake and pissed and starts rampaging through the triskelion, easily taking out iron man and hawkeye since… well Tony's suit runs on energy and Tony gets super cocky when facing electro instead of you know.. .readying a countermeasure, while Hawkeye.. didn't think to go get any arrows or equipment. EARTH'S MIGHTEST HEROES PEOPLE.

Jessica does slightly better but still gets jobbed out and Nick Fury, no matter the universe.. is still nick fucking fury and tries shooting him. It dosne't exactly work.. but ti's clear he's more trying to distract the guy and get his people clear than actually win. Unfortunately their in the chill of the night at the scene of a crime.. and while he may not be in a streak of light.. he's certainly arrived just in time

While obviously Miles isn't really on the skill level to beat electro normally, the combination of Electro thinking h'es peter and having a breakdown over it and a Venom Blast, the electricty thing hinted at earlier, powered punch get him weak enough for Nick Fury to play count the bullets with him. Electro is down and the next day Nick Fury says they'll talk.. and MIles finds out what that means that very conversatoin as jessica shows up with a new costume for him.

It's a nice parting and with that Miles now has his iconic costume, his one shot… and as Ganke puts it as his friend swings off having finally achieved his destiny

As you could probably guess I fucking love this arc and this run on the character in general. But this story well sets up who miles is, what the stakes are him for, stealthy sets up the big bad and miles first real threat for the next arc, and is an expertly crafted story about honroing legacy. While Into the Spider-Verse's story is mostly it's own, a LOT of the dna of who miles is was there at the start. As i've hinted at I do not like Brian Micheal Bendis, his writing took a hit and it was while writing several properties I loved with no regard for how to actually do that and he's only recently thankfully stepped away from the big two. But while he was there I can't deny he created two of the best spider-man runs of all time, one total if you count both spidey tenures together, and one of the best additions to spider-man period. Part of spidey's popularity is anyone could be behind the mask.. but this story made it a glorious reality, creating a spider-man just as compelling as one with a long storied history and tons of adaptations in 5 issues.

Will I return to Miles Story? Will you guys someday see what's up with his uncle, the country disolve, venom cost miles greatly, the rise of a new group of ultimates and so much more? Probably. When I can't say, that's up to either you guys to comission or me to fit into my schedule once this arc is done. But after reading this I was reminded how great this run was and how it deserved to be shared with webslingers all across the spider-verse

your point about jean’s relationships with other characters not having progressed in the same way is a very good one, and is one of the things that makes her first resurrection very interesting, but i think writers just ignore that because teen jean did form a bond with emma and work under magneto and had all these experiences that are now imbedded in krakoa era jean, which means the disconnect isn’t really that deep. i personally don’t like this though and think it’s lazy storytelling so

i would argue the disconnect is still very deep! if the intent of writers is that teen (time-displaced) jean's memories are now held by adult jean, then i would imagine that those memories would be pretty difficult for current jean to reconcile with her other experiences with these people. if that is the situation that is supposed to be going on, there are things worth exploring there!

but i'm not really clear on that being the intent, or the rationale, behind not going into this stuff, because that isn't (as far as i know) an idea that has been presented in these comics. as a reader, it feels more to me like that is just not something x-men comics are very interested in, at the moment. it's not really the kind of story they want to tell with jean.

i really appreciate you sending in this ask! i don't really care about the time-displaced o5, and so i have a tendency to forget that they existed. so thank you for reminding me! because that could certainly have impacted how jean's memories of other characters affect her! but that does not seem to be what is happening. to me. i could be extremely wrong about that though.

Ooooo, yes! My favorite X-Men villain! And cats! One of my favorite creatures! This will be good. (Should I call you Sabretooth Anon? Or Tiger Anon? What would you like to be called?) Let's see what I can do for you:

He'd lived a long life. A rough life. Survived bloody war after war, committed atrocity after atrocity, torn and gutted and destroyed anything in his way-

He wasn't sure how he ended up with some cat child.

Specifically, one who wouldn't leave.

They were like a... a Neko, or gajinka, or some animal-hybrid thing. Cat ears on their head, cat tail swaying behind them, and purring when happy and hissing when mad. It's like the higher powers of the universe decided to condense everything that was cat and bundled it into the form of this child.

They trailed after him, asking questions and trying to rub their head against him, chatting about anything they can think of. It's annoying at first, but he gets used to it.

Then they start leaving gifts for him.

A leaf they found. Some coins. A fish they caught.

He begrudgingly accepts them, if only so they'll stop leaving more surprises.

He finds out he's attached when Magneto thinks of getting rid of them.

"No. They're not going anywhere," he growls, glaring evenly at the magentic mutant. He's not even sure why he'd think of sending them away.

"Sabretooth, they are of no use to us here. It would be best to send them elsewhere, where they won't be underfoot," presses the old mutant. From the way the metal table is creaking, he's started to get annoyed. That's too bad for him.

"And I say they should stay. They're not a problem. Are they? The kid doesn't mess with anything, and they keep quiet. That's more than you can say 'bout yer brats," Sabretooth purrs, huffing lightly when he sees his boss' eye twitch. Good. It's been too long since he properly got the old iron ore properly riled.

"Why are you so stuck on them staying? Is the mighty Sabretooth attached to them?" Magneto grinds out. And suddenly he's not feeling so pleased.

"And...? They need someone to watch them, and I doubt you want a stray kitten turning to, oh... Xavier," he says, feigning thinking it over. When he sees the other man's shoulders stiffen, he knows he's made his point.

"... Keep them out of trouble, Creed."

"Of course, Boss." He knows he has a smug grin on his face, but-

Who cares one whisker about it?

He gets to keep his kitten.

And he sure as h*ll wasn't going to give them up just because the old magnet couldn't understand their value.

Look, the kitten made him...

Happy.

Calm.

Full of purring and rumbling chirps, instead of angry growls and hissing fury.

So if that means they're not ever leaving him...

So be it.

"Hey, kitten, want to go hunt some dinner?"

"Yes!"

He's happy and the kit's happy, and if someone even tries to ruin that happiness, he'll gut them, and see how smug they are when they wind up dinner for the buzzards.

"Let's go, kitten!"

When he's greeted with a thrilled chirp and a fluffy tail curling, he can't help but give a softer grin.

Yep, that's HIS kitten...
