M3GAN (2023) Review
Tumblr media
Only the first movie of 2023, and already we have a classic David Guetta techno-pop song being transformed into a menacing minute-long lullaby sung by a creepy AI doll as the camera hones in on her cold, dare I say, titanium eyes. Sounds like we’re in for a weird year at the movies, ladies and gentlemen!
Plot: M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a lifelike doll that's programmed to be a child's greatest companion and a parent's greatest ally. Designed by Gemma, a brilliant roboticist, M3GAN can listen, watch and learn as it plays the role of friend and teacher, playmate and protector. When Gemma becomes the unexpected caretaker of her 8-year-old niece, she decides to give the girl a M3GAN prototype, a decision that leads to unimaginable consequences.
As much as I wish that a film titled M3GAN was a movie adaptation of that ‘Meegan & Andre Break-Up’ sketch from the Key & Peele show, instead we have a typical January horror release. The typical type of throwaway horror film a studio dumps on the quietest month of the year at the movies as cinemas cool down from all the Oscars contenders that have recently graced the big screen. That being said, M3GAN might actually an above average horror outing, as for one its produced by James Wan of The Conjuring franchise fame, and also as of the time of writing the film boasts a stunning 95% positive rating on the critic website Rotten Tomatoes. So I decided to give this one a go, even though its not like this is the first creepy doll we have witnessed in horror movies. Annabelle? Or Chucky? Yep, there are a plenty of them, though to be fair you can’t blame film studios for it, as the amount of creepy toys one can find in random toy stores and charity shops, it really allows for quite a bit of inspiration.
What works most in favour of M3GAN is its release time slot. As aforementioned, we’re fresh off the end of awards season, so the last thing we need is some serious dramatization or a heart wrenching real life story. We need something goofy and easy to watch as we fill our faces with overpriced popcorn and slurp on some slushie that is supposedly a large sizes yet we all know its a medium at best. And that’s exactly was M3GAN is - a silly movie. Heck, I wouldn’t even call it a horror as it’s not scary. Yes, there are a couple of jump scares, yet you see them a mile away. What really is the joyful element of this film is how stupid all the characters are as they do thinks without thinking of consequences, and also obviously that there is a creepy AI doll right in the middle of it all doing creepy AI doll stuff. Yes, the AI doll itself is weirdly funny, from her dances to her singing (yep, she sings!), and the general way she walks around and talks. Don’t get me wrong, there are some visual effects at play here, however it’s all really stupid, however the movie is very self aware of its ridiculous factor so it results in some very entertaining moments. That’s the best I can describe this film - entertaining. And yes when you think about it too much, a lot of it doesn't make any sense. Why are all of the adults dumb or wilfully ignorant when it comes to implementing AI into their prototype? Why didn't they have the slightest foresight or precautions in store if something goes wrong? Why does a puppet for kids posses the strength of a Terminator? And if said robot is so dangerous, why not disconnect the brain chip entirely from the body when doing any fail safe tests? Why is the 8-year old girl such an annoying spoilt brat? Okay, that last one isn’t really a plot hole, more so just the fact that the girl was annoying and I didn’t want her to make it to the end of the movie. Harsh, I know, but has to be said.
M3GAN tries to implement some resemblance of social commentary, through our over reliance on technology to the importance of parenthood and how that cannot be replicated, but at the end of the day this isn’t a movie you want to really think about. It’s more so a glorified episode of Black Mirror, except it goes nowhere as dark. Again, entertaining for what it is, with enough of the creep factor yet not really a horror. Though the doll’s piano rendition of “Toy Soldiers” is hella good. It was supposed to be an unsettling moment yet I was there like “girl, you got some tunes!!”
Overall score: 6/10

M3GAN Review: A Not Scary Doll In A Disappointing Movie
M3GAN Review: A Not Scary Doll In A Disappointing Movie Read our #M3GAN review:
M3GAN, a new project from Universal Studios with Blumhouse, being produced by the cursed doll king James Wan and directed by Gerard Johnstone, follows the story of Gemma, played by Allison Williams, who is a brilliant roboticist for a toy company who uses artificial intelligence to develop M3GAN, a realistic doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and parents’ greatest ally. devastating to go into the tag for an obscure vampire movie I've been quietly obsessed with for years to find mostly gifsets of minor characters (played by big-name actors) and review blogs saying they didn't like it :(
@ everyone who made a post saying "I liked it :)" I am blowing you a kiss. everyone who made a lovely gifset or photoset of the cinematography I am tipping my hat. that one poster that said "bro did y'all just miss the Entire Message about class and race or???" I am shaking your hand with enthusiasm there was SUCH a message about class and race
anyway everybody should watch Night Teeth and revel in glitzy flashy modern vampires in LA with me

Ahh Dick is actually so fucking adorable and cute. I want him so bad.
Tumblr media
I loved how Artemis called out Dick for not being responsible for Halo Girl and Brion when he literally was in charge of the mission.
Tumblr media
Guys let me just say that Kid Flash has grown finer than ever. He was already fine before but now he's even more fine and it's making me drool 🤤.
Tumblr media
Just Dick and Artemis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I loved how Artemis closed Halo Girl's eyes but she pulled her hand off. She wants to see how big he is and I don't blame her.
Tumblr media
The panic he got when Halo Girl went towards him 😭. I want them to get together so bad.
Tumblr media
Also Idk who this guy is who threw his coat at Brion but I love how casual and nonchalant he is.
Tumblr media
Nostalgia 😭
Tumblr media
I miss the OG team.

Went to watch m3gan on opening night with a friend of mine while high on edibles for the first time and it was a magical experience
It's a fantastic movie to see while high bc the movie knows not to take itself seriously with its premise
The furby lookalike toys at the beginning of the movie evoked a visceral fear within my very soul
Not only did we never get context for why m3gan randomly breaks out into dance before committing acts of violence, but it turns out she breaks out into song too!!
At the beginning of the movie, Gemma mentioned m3gan's spine being made out of titanium, which only made her even more of an icon in my eyes bc I have a titanium spine too 😍 spinal fusion besties<3 my friend and I cackled over it bc we were high
M3gan's wig could've been an anime wig I cannot stress this enough. IT COULD'VE BEEN ANYTHING
You didn't have to be sober to realize that Gemma has the emotional intelligence of a microwave and that she kinda deserved m3gan's torment tbh
The entire theater started giggling when she got on all fours and started chasing a kid through the woods
By far the scariest part of the movie to me was whenever m3gan would mimic other people's voices to lure out animals/people to kill them. That was true uncanny valley shit right there
Speaking of uncanny valley, my friend and I both agreed that m3gan's usual design throughout the movie was far creepier than by the end of the movie when her exoskeleton was damaged. Her endoskeleton just wasn't that menacing tbh
Listening to her break out into song was like if someone randomly started blaring kidz bop at intermittent points in the theater
The funniest part of the movie was when she started singing David Guetta's Titanium to Katie at her bedside. Like it was out of nowhere 😭 caught my friend and I completely off guard and we were cry laughing. As if the spine joke wasn't funny enough on its own 😂
At different parts of the movie my friend and I both thought of plot twists that would've made for better writing than the actual plot twist
10/10 the titanium scene will forever be etched into our minds and this movie is camp as hell, I would not be surprised if m3gan amassed a cult following at some point in time

Megan Shepherd's TNBC Novelization: Review
Here are my thoughts and full review on Megan Shepherd's Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (Novel). Although the book is closely based on the movie, there are a few unique things about it that I deem necessary to hide under a 'Read More', for spoilers to those who wish to avoid them.
Tumblr media
Review + my thoughts below!
The book closely follows the movie with descriptives for each scene, except it doesn't contain any of the songs or lyrics, so substitutional dialogue is used instead. Most of these went well to describe/summarize the songs they replaced. I have no complaints with how Megan followed the movie in novel form, it's pretty accurate beyond some...minor things.
One example: Halloween just ended when Jack goes missing and stumbles upon Christmas Town, and when he comes back, he decides to have Halloween Town handle Christmas themselves. It's noteworthy to mention that they manage to do this from only November 1st - December 25th, a timespan of only 2 months. However. In this novel, the timing is changed - and it takes the Town a whole year to manage their own Christmas, and it is stated in the text that they "skipped their first Halloween" in order to do it.
Wouldn't the humans notice something different with Halloween, without the monsters and creatures of the night to scare them? Wouldn't it be kind of lame, and warrant the title of a "bad Halloween"? When Santa Claus and his gifts were missing, the humans nearly brought an end to Christmas. Is Halloween exempt from impacting the humans like this? Wouldn't there be any repercussions? Isn't it the Holiday World's purpose/job to bring the holiday TO the humans??
Anyway!
The text is beautifully written and I loved Megan's portrayal of Jack Skellington's internal struggle and depression, and how Sally related to it. She wrote the two of them wonderfully in the novel and even brought new details into the picture, mentioning Sally had done sewing tasks for him and is the one who recommended putting white stripes on his suit. She also delivered his book of The Scientific Method from the Doctor to him. <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The novel contains a lot of little details/changes like these. I loved most of them and only had minor issues with a couple choices. One particular recurring mention, that I and other readers have disliked, was the heavy reference and implication to Jack Skellington's death. A few times in the novel, he thinks of his "previous life" and how he died. I share a fandom headcanon that Jack is a special skeleton from a species in Halloween Town itself, rather than him just dying. But this is a personal nitpick and doesn't impact anything, really - it's Megan's choice for his backstory, and I respect that!
Another small nitpick of mine is that I always thought Jack nabbed all the Christmas books from Christmas Town, but in this novel, it says that he got them from Halloween Town's Library. This brings all sorts of confusing questions into my mind...
A couple of my favorite lines from the book:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, the MOST interesting part of this novel, for me, is how it follows The Pumpkin King Game's backstory for Oogie Boogie, where he attempted to overthrow Jack Skellington to become Bug King. The novel mentions this a few times, and it's one of my favorite takes of Oogie Boogie - so I was delighted to see canon from my favorite TNBC game implemented into the novel!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, I loved this novelization and the new headcanons it brought to me. It was wonderfully written and stayed close to the movie while also portraying the author's own takes on the characters and their feelings. Beyond my few minor nitpicks, it was great and I can't wait to see what the author will do with Long Live the Pumpkin Queen's sequel.
Check out this novelization if you can!

💿 MEGAN ― M.T.S
album analysis + rating
Tumblr media
b/n : been excited for this one and wanted to get this out asap. not doing all of them. this is my interpretation of these songs and what i got from them. might not be yours and that's okay ! + unedited
Tumblr media
HISS ((10/10))
― masterpiece from start to finish. she left EVERYTHING in this song. anything that anybody had to say she basically predicted because the response back is the song again.
in this, megan calls out multiple rappers, especially male. she calls out about how many male rappers are fein's for her body and fame. they're constantly chasing after her, and can't decide whether they wanna be her or be WITH her.
the verses she spits just keep coming in this song. it's a long ass receipt that she's been waiting to print and sign with class.
one thing i disliked was that it was heavily overshadowed by you know who.. not enough people payed attention to where the shots were directed and thrown at. drake for example.. her bbl line was a direct shot to him who can't handle rejection and who has constantly been taking low blows at meg and her body when he's been under the knife for "his".
not to mention the artistry in the music videos and the photos she'd been posting leading up to the release of this song. she aligned everything perfectly and made a snug spot for this in her discography. her references, bars, visuals, flow, foreshadowing and everything else was a masterpiece that will not be forgotten decades from now ..
RATTLE ((7.9/10))
― the instrumental in this has me imagining her walking on thin ice, confidently and not worried about breaking it because she can also walk on water. all eyes on her because they're waiting on her for ideas and what to talk about next.
this song is about people always trying to rip meg off and turn her into something she's not. she's standing up for her character and to the people who continue to try to take advantage of her ..
FIGUEROA ((7.6/10))
― catchy, rich, and classy. the meow got me. having to call out the lies and everyone who says shit about her.
WHERE THEM GIRLS AT ((7/10))
― this feels like it could be a club classic. the beat of it reminds me of songs from the early 2000's. simple and makes me wanna dance ..
BROKE HIS HEART ((8.9/10))
― she's dominating in this song. it feels like she's calling for her hottie army. + this song being just in time before pride month ends. need people to stop denying her sexuality now ..
B.A.S + KYLE RICHH ((9/10))
― right as the song starts, she jumps right in. she's not letting anyone play with her, her time, her pleasure, and body. any wrong way you treat her, she's gonna throw it right back at you .. the juxtaposition with the aggressive but soft feel of this blending together adds onto it.
she's winning the idgaf wars with this one as well. she doesn't care about how she's treating you because she deserves better anyways. this song is a shrug and her turning her back on you because you're not worthy enough
+ this SAMPLE. when it starts playing it's like the perfect after taste to an already delicious desert. i love the way the lyrics from the sample contradict with the song. sending completely different messages but still mix seamlessly. she makes the best uses of all the samples she uses. this time "out on a limb" by teena marie. an addictive listen especially when it gets to the end. a want to hear the end but not for it to finish ..
OTAKU HOT GIRL ((10/10))
― a fan favorite already, especially for megan's anime fans. can we acknowledge adam mcarthur, yuji's (jjk), english voice actor getting on this track to talk about how he likes grammy winners like megan?? with fat asses?? oh i know that's fucking right !
+ the jjk sample used in the song?? i love the eery sound and feel of the sample and how she incorporated it into the song. but WHO REALLY DOES IT LIKE MEGAN?? she searched and sought out for the puzzle pieces to perfectly connect to each other in this song. everything being smooth and blending together so effortlessly.
not to mention the japanese she was speaking, who's not bilingual? "can't touch me, like gojo" and the domain expansion line? yeah. this pulled the anime nerd out of me. her brain. also noting that megan had to keep changing the song days before her album released to appease the anime studio. give her, her flowers..
to listen to the part she sampled click here ..
FIND OUT ((9/10))
― once again in love with the instrumentals she uses. the tingly feel the noise effects give make it yummier. not much to say about this one, need to let it marinate a bit ..
BOA ((8/10))
― artistry on ten. references on ten. looks on ten. dancing on ten. only thing is i expected more from the song. i love the use of the sample from gwen stefani's "what you waiting for".
it definitely is an experience to watch the music video. the anime, movie, video game, and tv show references she was putting out, was being picked up.
a bunch of iconic looks that have been referenced already and will continue to be. you can tell a lot of work and creativity went into this one. not to mention the creative and comedic deaths. she showed her hot girl nerd for this track !
MAMUSHI + YUKI CHIBA ((7/10))
― again w the japanese, bilingual queen. a chill song that added some more flavor to the album. they're both speaking of their luxury being celebrities and glamor of it all. yuki and megan are bonding and relating to each other over those aspects ..
WORTHY ((7/10))
― a feel good self assuring song. she speaks of how she's worthy of the love she craves and deserves nothing less than that. everyone should have this type of confidence and this should be everyone's default thought process ..
MOODY GIRL ((10/10))
― she in her feelings with this one. relatable and a song that i connect with. feeling lonely with a room full of people and like she's the only one that feels that way and the only one that sees she's not okay. she's not feeling herself, looking in the mirror and thinking things she would never usually think. also being told and feeling forced to feel some other way as if she isn't trying to feel better.
feeling like everyone is against her and no one else is trying to understand how she feels.
i love the way she talks about her mental health in her music and captures negative feelings so perfectly. these types of songs are always overlooked by her songs about her sexuality. also the people who say she only talks about being sexual and having money when these songs are sitting here, get on !
the mellow background vocals add onto the sad girl theme of the song. we FEEL the sorrow she's feeling. wanting to party away the emptiness and despair she feels, wanting to move past the feeling but just stuck on it. one of my favorites and i fear it's gonna be underrated <//3 ..
ACCENT + GLO RILLA ((8/10))
― an addictive duo that i will always come back to. the passing of the baton in this song is my favorite. catchy, flowy, and throwing shots. need a music video where they're fighting something together ..
SPIN + VICTORIA MONET ((8/10))
― a duo i wasn't expecting but goes so well together. again megan spitting fire ass verses. she’s collecting all the rnb girls. "messy, men wanna kick it like neymar let a man know i'm the goal, i don't chase y'all".. in this track they speak on people being hypnotized by them and their every move ..
DOWNSTAIRS DJ ((10/10))
― will forever love how open megan is with her sexuality. the start of this song with watery sparkly noises matches the vibe of the song. in this song she's talking about self pleasure and taking care of herself. she's not ashamed like how society wants women to feel. truly normalizing women being open. she's real as fuck, will tell you a joke but never a lie !
MIAMI BLUE + BIG K.R.I.T. BUDDAH BLESS ((7/10))
― she's always able to make the most obscure beats sound cohesive and good. what should be challenging, she achieves effortlessly. again not much to say, it's still marinating ..
COBRA ((10/10))
― one of my favorites in the album. cobra delves into the hardships megan faced and the reality of her mental health throughout these years. the many difficulties she had to face alone with an audience watching her every move wasn't an easy feat but she did it with grace, something that many admire about her. she continues to keep it real with her fans and show her scars.
the symbolism and visuals tying in together with shedding her skin and becoming a different person and moving on from that part of her life is genius. the rebirth of megan. thinking outside the box feels like the usual with megan.
+ her versatility with the beat of the music. just by how the song starts it gets you excited, not knowing what to expect until the beat drops surprising you. this song shows you a different side of megan and feels like a complete 180 compared to her other work ..
Tumblr media
OVERALL RATING :: ((9.3/10))
final thoughts :;
megan thee stallion's first independent album.her artistry, on a completely different level, her flow and delivery 10/10. she has such a creative mind that extends from just rap and music. it SHOWS in her visuals in her music videos. it is such a beautiful art that she continues to make and she is consistent with it. her music goes past the bounds of any rapper right now. her versatile blend of rap, instrumentals, and her niche interests.
this album also having her constantly switch up her flow and each song being their own. nobody can say anything about that ever. people who say she doesn't change her flow only listen to her surface music and don't bother to acknowledge her artistry and songs aside from her features.
also her work when it comes to sampling other songs. she completely transforms the samples she uses and makes it her own, using it as a seed for her music. doing it megan's way.
a feature i wished and was hoping for was kehlani. she would've had a perfect spot in this album and would add so much. i also wished she would have explored more with other alternative genres as well and hope she does so in the future.
i will never get tired of her referencing animes. always being discreet and behind fire and smooth bars making everything fit together. she said people hate her because she's a hot nerd and right ! will forever be obsessed w thee stallion and enamored with her work and grind. my favorite album from her now !

BOA- Megan Thee Stallion(Review)
Tumblr media
Now, listen up before you start arguing with me, I’m a huge fan of all kinds of music, but I mostly jam out to K-pop. However, when I step out of that zone, I always check if Megan thee Stallion has released anything new. With the success of her singles “Cobra” and “Hiss,” it was no surprise that she would keep the momentum going with “Boa.” What really caught me off guard was the fact that she made a music video inspired by a video game (but then again, she’s a big anime fan, so I shouldn’t be too shocked)! I know she’s a bit controversial, but she’s seriously talented lyrically, and this song is no different when it comes to the lyrics. I really appreciate her work. Sure, some of the themes in her songs may overlap, but you have to remember, she’s been through a lot. When she tried to show a more vulnerable side, it didn’t sit well with a lot of people. Now, let’s talk about the video. I absolutely loved it! It felt so fun and, to me, it really complemented the song. BUT WHAT I’M REALLY HYPED ABOUT IS THE Gwen Stefani sample in “What You Waiting For?” Like, WOW! That really tugged at my heartstrings, and I was so touched by it. Overall, it may not be the ultimate summer song, but it’s definitely going on repeat. I’d give this song a 9.9/10, and that 0.1 deduction is purely because I wish I could dance like her, haha! Keep doing your thing, Megan. I’m totally backing you on this wave you’re riding!
Remember to leave a comment if you want me to review one of your favs

first week of september!! fall is drawing near!!! there were some pretty cool tracks that dropped this week, two in particular that are on the shortlist for some of my favorites of the year. 2024 is drawing closer to the end, but this continues to shape up to be one of the best years for music in recent memory. In other words, NEW PHIL ELVERUM MOUNT EERIE ALBUM WOOOOOO WOOOOOOOOO YEAH YEA H YEAH YEAH!!!!!!! also feel free to follow me on rate your music and twitter <3
Tumblr media
"Made Out of Memory" - Nilüfer Yanya
◇ released: Sept. 2, 2024 ◇ featured on My Method Actor (not yet released) ◇ genres: indietronica, alt-pop
Starting to sound like a broken record, but this new Nilüfer Yanya single is very solid. We're only a few weeks out from My Method Actor, but it's shaping up to be one of the most promising releases of the year. I love the subtlety she implements into these songs. Everything is given just the right amount of attention. The guitars on this track are buried, but crawl to the surface at the most opportune moment. Her vocals are also gorgeous, as are her melodies. Really good cut here, can't wait to dive into the full record.

"Broom of Wind" | "I Walk" - Mount Eerie
◇ released: Sept. 3, 2024 ◇ featured on Night Palace (not yet released) ◇ genres: singer-songwriter, indie folk, slacker rock, post-rock
4 years after the biographical meditation of Microphones in 2020, the highly prolific singer-songwriter Phil Elverum is returning in November with a new record under the Mount Eerie name. This announcement was accompanied by these two brilliant singles, the brief jaunty "Broom of Wind" and the weird atmospheric "I Walk." As a massive fan of Elverum's work, these songs were exactly what I could've hoped for - especially the latter. Spacey yet organic atmospheric sounds held together very loosely. Everything feels free-flowing. The traditional rules of song-structuring are construed in subtle, yet effective ways. His lyricism, as always, is just amazing. He makes you feel so much, deep in your core, even when he's crooning what seem to be abstractions.
In the press-release for this record, Night Palace is referred to as a spiritual successor to The Glow Pt. 2 - arguably Phil's magnum opus and one of the greatest records of all time - it also states that "These are songs of re-surrendering to a state of wonder and abandoning the wrung-dry skepticism that this hard world can impose." It doesn't seem like a cheap way to get fans re-invested, he has no reason to do that. If you're a fan of Elverum's music, you're most likely locked in for whatever he has coming down the pipeline. This genuinely, like his previous record, feels like treading old ground with more experience this time around in order to reinvigorate the creative process. Anyway, I'll try to save my ramblings for when I can dive into the full record, but this is firmly my new most anticipated album of the year.

"th1 [evnslower]" - Aphex Twin
◇ released: Sept. 4, 2024 ◇ featured on Selected Ambient Works Volume II Expanded Edition (not yet released) ◇ genres: dark ambient, drone, space ambient
Another track from the Aphex Twin archives has been officially released leading up to the deluxe edition of Selected Ambient Works Volume II. More savvy Richard D. James heads will probably know much more about this track than I, maybe it was leaked through a big Soundcloud dump or found in a trashcan behind his house. Whatever the case, this is pretty great. Very ominous ambient piece that sounds like it would fit on the soundtrack to a horror film set in space. It feels claustrophobic in a way, unlike the previous single "#19" which felt very peaceful and optimistic. "th1 [evnslower]" puts you on edge, makes you feel like there might be something looming just around the corner.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"Magic I Want U" | "How to Teleport" - Jane Remover
◇ released: Sept. 4, 2024 ◇ genres: glitch pop, alternative r&b, breakbeat
Jane Remover is back again with another set of seemingly standalone tracks. Like the other two tracks that dropped a little bit ago, they're a bit of a departure from her last album - which is honestly a bit refreshing. I enjoyed that record a decent amount, but there's a bite to these songs that's irresistible. The star here is "Magic I Want U" with its hard-hitting production and tight melodies that just sound absolutely exhilarating. "How to Teleport" isn't bad either, it's got a ton of cool sounds. These new Jane Remover tracks are some of my favorites of hers and although these aren't attached to a new project, I really hope she pushes some of these ideas further in the future.

"We Will Rock You (Megan Thee Stallion Version)" | "Neva Play" - Megan Thee Stallion
◇ released: Sept. 5, 2024 | Sept. 6, 2024 ◇ genres: southern hip hop, trap, pop rap, drift phonk
Big week for Megan Thee Stallion fans it seems! First, with the bizarre collaboration with Queen for a remix of sports stadium staple "We Will Rock You" ... it's fine. A bit gaudy and awkward, but I don't hate it. The next day she released "Neva Play" with RM of BTS, which is a bit better, but not particularly amazing either. I think it's the beat more than anything. I don't want to hear Megan over a phonk beat in all honesty. Neither Megan's or RM's verse stood out to me either. Oh well!
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"For Sure" - Ethel Cain
◇ released: Sept. 5, 2024 ◇ featured on American Football (Covers) (not yet released) ◇ genres: slowcore, dream pop, post-rock
Following Iron and Wine's indie folk reimagining of "Never Meant," Ethel Cain is the next to contribute to the new American Football covers album with her version of "For Sure." I definitely appreciate what she does with this one. The slow-burning, super lush sound just lulls you into a trance all the way until the big climax in the middle. I didn't have high hopes for this covers project - although I'm mostly just butthurt because I thought American Football were teasing NEW music instead of an anniversary celebration of their first LP, but I digress. This is a really great cover and I'm a bit more excited to hear what the rest of this project has in store.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"Unt" - Pinhead Gunpower
◇ released: Sept. 5, 2024 ◇ featured on Unt (not yet released) ◇ genres: punk rock, pop punk, power pop
Green Day side-project Pinhead Gunpowder are back with their first new song in 16 years. It's a bit of a snoozefest to be honest. Billie Joe Armstrong has settled into his ways as a vocalist and everything he sings has this level of cleanness to it which is a bit unbecoming of a punk record. It sounds a bit rougher than what you would expect from Green Day proper, but it still just feels a bit toothless. Not doing much for me instrumentally either.

"The Emptiness Machine" - Linkin Park
◇ released: Sept. 5, 2024 ◇ featured on From Zero (not yet released) ◇ genres: alternative rock, alternative metal, post-hardcore
Linkin Park are returning years after the unfortunate passing of former frontman Chester Bennington, but this time with a new vocalist Emily Armstrong - who definitely doesn't have ANY baggage whatsoever! Truth be told, I've never been a big Linkin Park fan and unfortunately that remains to be the case with this new single. It just feels way too drenched in dramatics to the point where it feels a bit sterile to me. Armstrong's verses were fine, albeit a bit generic. Yeah, I just don't think this is for me. To longtime fans of the band, I hope you guys like this!

"Ego" - Halsey
◇ released: Sept. 6, 2024 ◇ featured on The Great Impersonator (not yet released) ◇ genres: pop rock, alternative rock, pop punk, power pop
Halsey is releasing her new fifth studio album soon, which will feature all of her singles over the past few months as well as this new one "Ego." I don't dislike this song or anything, but I'm not seeing the picture she's painting here. I guess these new songs have been eclectic, but I fail to see how they'll coincide on a full-length project together. This is definitely a departure from the nostalgic alt-rock of "Lonely Is the Muse," instead leaning more into poppier sounds. Her songwriting is very personal and intense across these songs, but I worry that these constant flip-flopping between sounds will obscure that. We shall see.

"ELEMENTS" - wolfears
◇ released: Sept. 6, 2024 ◇ genres: post-punk, funk, afrobeat
This groovy new single from wolfears is really cool. There's this palpable anxiety to it that amps up the excitement so much, everything is in constant motion. The grooves are prickly, never giving you the opportunity to settle into them. Their vocals sound like they're reciting mantras and chants which adds to the uneasiness. It's a good feeling of unease though. Her musicianship is pretty impeccable on this cut too as she handles every bit of instrumentation here. I could've been fooled into thinking this was the work of a full band. "ELEMENTS" is a really solid track and if you're a fan of either the Talking Heads or Fela Kuti - hopefully you're fans of both - give this a listen!

"Ruby Rosary" - A$AP Rocky feat. J. Cole
◇ released: Sept. 6, 2024 ◇ featured on DON'T BE DUMB (not yet released) ◇ genres: jazz rap, east coast hip hop, cloud rap
A$AP Rocky has released the third single leading up to his new record DON'T BE DUMB. This is a really good track, I'm loving the jazz rap production a lot. Rocky's verses continue to wow me during this rollout, more than they have in some time. They're not the most impressive, but they're undeniably smooth as hell. He's bringing some confidence into this one. Even J. Cole's verse wasn't that bad, he needed a verse that was at the very least good after "Grippy" and his rough MIGHT DELETE LATER tape. Yeah, I'm loving this. This is shaping up to be a really promising project, hopefully we get a concrete release date in the coming weeks.

Bringing back my comic recommendation series on a new blog, and I'm yelling about @superposeblog this time around.
If I wasn't high off just writing this article, I would explain to you how hard I've fallen for this comic. I need you to read this comic more than I need you to read my review, even if you're not a fan of sci-fi. In fact, especially if you aren't a fan of sci-fi.
This comic has the beauty of worldbuilding, the depth of character, the artistry of its story down fucking pat, and by the time the sci-fi themes really get started, you're already hooked.
SUPERPOSE is the essence of good story telling that it can appeal to people outside of its demographic while wholeheartedly committing to the story it wants to tell. I want it to keep telling its story; there just need to be more people listening to what it has to say.
Check out SUPERPOSE—the comic, the tumblr, all of it—and enjoy. I promise it'll be worth it.
