missed opportunities

This isn’t meant to be a summary or a translation of the Sunset Savanna event!! I just wanted to share my thoughts surrounding the actual tournament and the characters involved in the overall story.

I felt like??? This event was originally meant to be much bigger and much more elaborate than what we got. Is that just me?? Don’t get me wrong, what we ended up with was… okay. It was serviceable. It worked. I just feel like it could have easily been more, but there had to be significant downsizing for some reason.

One thing that kind of confused me was the hyping up of the Catch the Tail tournament versus what we actually got?? (Loved the tourism part though, hearing about local foods, stories, and customs is fun!) I understand the cultural significance of the game, but a tournament arc doesn't work that well if we're only invested in one side; obviously, we'll be rooting for NRC to win because we know them the best and have spent the most time with them, but... They have no significant rival or opposition to go against (which is at least one thing episode 5 had going for it in the form of Vil vs Neige, and even in the Harveston event when the Seven Dwarves reappear). We don't even really have names or faces to think of as their foes. We aren't really given the chance to cheer for anyone else. Like???? NRC's first opponents get no artwork at all, and then their second opponents are supposedly Cheka's usual trio of guards--except they're just beastmen mobs A, B, and C. What happened to the lore about "most of the important roles being fulfilled by female warriors"?? You really going to sit here and tell me that the people assigned to guard the person who is essentially the future of your country aren't roles traditionally fulfilled by strong "lionesses"? All three of the roles just happened be occupied by easily reused assets? Even the replacement/temporary guards assigned to Cheka were women, and the way the originals were foreshadowed made it seem like they would later be a big deal or the "rivals" NRC had to overcome in their final matchup. They technically were, but they were just your typical run-of-the-mill mobs. They have some investment, being that Kifaji trained them and they are bitter about having won previous years but Leona stood them up for training. It’s basically one big ploy to circumvent Leona not wanting to give the warrior lessons to the winning team, a way to counteract his laziness. It makes sense for the story, but it isn’t very high-stakes.

The other team NRC fought against was even more unremarkable; they cheated just as much as NRC did and didn't even compensate for it with at least recognizable artwork or personalities. In fact, they got NO art at all. If anything, this team should have been the run-of-the-mill mobs from how generically mean they were.

It feels like this event had a handful of red herrings and cheeky lines thrown in to tease at the reveal of significant new characters, only to never follow through on them. I like Kifaji, and it's reasonable that Leona says tourists like the NRC kids can't possibly meet the head of state (Farena/Falena). However, I don't like that a lot surrounding Cheka's guards amounted to nothing?? They even mention they have a member to substitute in that's a retired imperial guard, but that ends up being of no real importance either… (he throws the match because Kalim showed him great kindness.) It’s more like a convenience that lets Leona swap in and cinch the win for NRC). It's so... anticlimactic????? Especially since the competition is supposedly for the best warriors to prove their wits and might.

Another missed opportunity is that??? The competition is supposedly open to anyone, even those from outside the Sunset Savanna. That may very well be just a writing loophole for Leona to easily shoehorn Kalim/Jack, Vil, and Lilia in as competitors, but there's so much more you could do with that idea!

Maybe there are other outsiders come to fight for the title. Maybe Rook shows up as a competitor to spook them if the devs don't want to design that many actual "rivals" with unique designs or new faces. Maybe there are your "non-traditional" fighters as well, people that are very young (just for the lols, imagine a kid Cheka's size kicking butt, using their small size and speed to their advantage) or very old (Rafiki weaponizing his wisdom and experience in combat, idk) but are still skilled enough in their own right to participate. Maybe show us more types of beastmen and how they use their specific animal’s physical traits to their advantage! I don't know how likely it is for merfolk or fae to join (since those races seem like recluses compared to beastmen and humans and merpeople don't do well in arid climates), but it would have been cool to see others throw their hats into the ring!

There were probably just limitations in place due to this being a hometown event…? It wouldn't be fair for the others to only feature one new character while this one features a TON of them, nor would it be fair for this hometown even to be significantly longer or more detailed than the others. Basically only the Halloween events are super extensive. In which case, I get it. I still would have really liked to see this concept more fleshed out and fully realized though!

Oh dear… it seems that Riddle has fallen ill to the common cold.

But to get sick? Well this was completely surprising even to him. How could he have let this happen.

Sulking and overthinking to himself about how he could have possibly gotten himself sick.You sat next to him in a chair to keep him company during his sickness.

You tried to reassure him that it’s a common natural thing to get sick. He just wouldn’t quit it.

At this point he might end up with a headache if he keeps pondering this hard to himself.

Quick! Think of something to distract Riddle from these pointless thoughts.

Looking around for any distraction. You hear the birds tweeting outside to themselves singing a small duet.

Singing! That’ll work perhaps it’ll even get him to fall asleep. If you remembered correctly Alice had a song from her story about her falling into Wonderland.

While Riddle was deep in thought, you took his hand and placed it in yours rubbing soft circles into it. Beginning to hum the soft melody to him.

It was enough to snap him out of his thought. The thoughts slowly fading from his mind as he listened to your soft voice sing such a familiar tune.

Each word you sung made him feel like he was floating on the crowds. His heart filled with so much warmth and love. If he wasn’t sick he would’ve placed a kissed on your hand by now.

Riddle wanted to keep listening he really did but his eyes were slowly falling close. Your angelic singing was successfully making him fall asleep.

Slowly drifting off, he finally falls to asleep with an empty and positive mind. How did he get to have such a wonderful S/O like you.

Finally coming to the conclusion of the song. You open your eyes to your boyfriend now peacefully sleeping with a smile on his face.

Leona Kingscholar. A very prideful man. But also an amazing boyfriend.

He loves you to the savanna and back. But to make him outfight say ‘I love you’ out in public? He would rather give his wallet to Ruggie.

It’s not that he doesn’t want too. He does but he finds it really embarrassing and will become very flustered. Hell if he lets the others see him be that vulnerable.

He might not be able to say it out loud public, but privately he could say it 1 million times to ensure that you know just how much he loves you.

Today, you made it your plans to achieve this goal. For him to say those three words to you in public.

But it was going to be extremely hard. This man values his pride more than anything.

Lounging about in his room while Leona was most likely napping in his bed. Standing above his “sleeping figure” pondering how to take this plan to action. That’s when you had a great idea.

Why not embarrass him.

Smirking to yourself, if you remembered correctly there was a love song during when Nala and Simba reconciled. Perfect!

Leona could tell you were up to no good. He was never asleep in the first place. He was studying your face as you stood there pondering to yourself. What were you up too?

All you had to do was sing out 5 words for him to jolt up to start chasing you.

“Can You Feel the Love Tonight”

Singing the song loud as possible, running out of his room so everyone in the dorm could hear you sing such a love song.

Leona would originally not care but everyone is aware you are his S/O and there will surely be teasing later on if he don’t stop you now. Plus the song you were singing is quite a popular love song in the Savanna.

He would’ve gotten you much quicker if you quit making such obstacles for him. Ducking under tables, jumping over couches. He was quite impressed with your agility.

You made quite the attraction. Your plan was coming out perfect. You were gaining the other students attention quite fast. To be fair half of the students here are beast men so their ears could hear quite well.

Finally getting cornered at a dead end with Leona right behind you. You told him that you will only stop if says I love you out loud.

With a loud exaggerated sigh. He realized he was getting out of this or else you would keep singing. He finally gives you loud “I love you” just enough for the students around to hear.

Giggly and happy for your plan to succeed. You kiss him on the cheek.

You fell right into this trap. He has you trapped in his arms now. You thought you were getting off Scott free from that? No you aren’t. You’re in for quite something.

Rook Hunt

This year have been such a busy year.

Crowley kept throwing so much work onto you. It’s been hard to see anyone recently. Especially your boyfriend, Rook.

Each day, you felt the loneliness eat you up one by one. Missing the warmth of being in your charming huntsman arms.

The best thing you could do whenever you even had a slight chance to see him was kissing him on the cheek and then running off back to your tasks.

Today was particular slow but nonetheless still busy as Crowley has once again dump another pile of work onto you. Somehow Professor Trein has lost his cat and ran off somewhere outside and apparently this was your duty to deal with it.

Sighing, leaning against one of the trees taking a break from the search. Listening to nature sounds putting you at ease from the work lately.

The loneliness has once more crept onto you again making you miss Rook once more.

Perhaps singing will takes things off your mind?

You remembered a song that Snow White would sing waiting for her Prince.

Singing to yourself leaning against the tree and looking up to the sky. Wishing that you could see your Prince Charming.

How lucky for you. Rook happened to be near walking by.

Hearing your voice flow through his ears like soft silk. His heart sank how sad you sounded singing about missing him.

Don’t worry mon amour. Your Prince Charming is coming to your aid immediately.

Still softly singing to yourself. You didn’t hear nor notice Rook approaching from behind.

Rook felt like he was falling in love with you all over again. Seeing your figure sing about missing him. He couldn’t help but stand there for a little longer listening to you.

Turning around to continue your search for the cat. You jump in shock seeing your boyfriend stand behind you.

Rook gets on knee taking his hat off. He gently takes your hand places a kiss on it.

“Your Prince have arrived Mon armor.”

Heart fluttering from the simple gesture. You smile happily and immediately tackle your love with a warm embrace.

You decided to take a break from the work Crowley has been giving you and spend the rest of your day with Rook.

He asks if you have wrote the song you were singing. Not wanting to tell him that Snow White was the one who sung it. You simply agreed saying yes. He praised you for such a romantic song. The song felt very familiar to him but he could not care less about that right now. He had been reunited back with his true love

Trigger Warning: Mentions of Insanity, murder, thought rape  A/N: Let me know if I missed something plz.

Summary: There was scene that was deleted from the Lion King where Scar wanted Nala as his Queen. He asked Zazu why wasn’t he loved, where Zazu listed things Scar lacked. One thing stood out to Scar that being lacking a Queen to rule by his side. At that moment he sang a reprised “Be Prepared” to Nala asking her to be his Queen. Now Leona has taken over his brothers kingdom a similar way as Scar did. He now needs a mate to rule by his side and willingly obey his command that being Y/N.

Notes: Y/N is G/N, a loin, and two years younger than Leona. Like in Jamil’s we need a Zazu replacement. Meet Ollin meaning movement like Zazu means movement. He loyally serves the royal family having a favoritism to Falena’s family. Considering Leona to be untrustworthy and believing he is that family member who ruins everything.

3rd Person POV

       “Ollin why aren’t I loved?” Leona asked lazily as he through the bone he was playing with. “Simple Sire,” Ollin hated the fact he had to call Leona sire. Awful brat, not deserving of the throne, thought Ollin. “Things around here have gone to pot” Ollin collected the bones from the floor, throwing them in a pile. “Oh shut up,” Leona stepped down his throne, walking towards Ollin. “What’s important is how I feel.” “The pride lands have become the armpit of Twisted Wonderland,” Ollin stated gathering up the bones. “Why, I’m tall, witty, good-looking,” Leona ignored Ollin's truthful words, intoxicated by his pride and ego. “Hyenas and the Ruggie boy who I never liked for your information are walking around like they own the place!” Ollin declared, shaking a bone to empathize his words. Leona continued to mumble of how great he is. After all what not to love about him. He’s charming and can tell a good joke once in a while. “There’s not enough water for the people!” Ollin said desperately trying to get Leona to reason. “Hmm something missing,” Leona finally asked. “What is it?” “Your grasp on reality!” Ollin screamed in Leona’s face. “You’ve gone down the path of insanity!” “Please my lord do something or the Sunset Savanna will be a laughing stock of Twisted Wonderland.” Ollin tried to stay calm. 

       “If Falena was alive.” “Oh shut up fool” Leona pushed Ollin to the wall. “Consider it shut Sire.” “Falena, Falena it's always about Falena, I’m sick of him,” Leona walked around the throne room. “What does he have that I don’t.” “Nothing, you lack nothing at all,” Ollin flew to Leona trying to not get put in the dungeon or even worst killed. Why Leona did to his own brother without any remorse. What would stop him from killed Ollin, nothing. “Well except a few minor things,” Ollin said, he had to say it. Leona was possibly one of the worst kings Sunset Savanna had ever seen. It must of been fate that he was born to be the one inheriting the throne. “Adoring subjects, respect of your species, a loving family, a devoted mate,” Ollin listed slyly leaning toward Leona with his hand behind his back. “Shall I go on Sire.” Leona paid no attention towards the other things he lacked. But a mate…a devoted one as well. That what he needed. Someone who would do what ever he commanded. Side by him. Care for him. Show his people he had a mate. “A mate, yes I need a mate,” Leona commented. “ACK what,” Ollin was shocked, even more scared for the poor soul, Leona would pick. “They would rule by my side.” Leona continued. “We’ll have cubs little Leonas running around,” “My heirs, my descendants, my lineage,” Leona had a grin one that Ollin could tell something bad would happen. “I will be immortal!”

       “Leona,” Y/N walked carefully through the door. “Ah Y/N your timing is wonderful,” Leona looked at the young lion with strong romantic interest. “Couldn’t be more perfect, do come in.” Oh no Ollin thought The poor thing. “The will be all Ollin,” Leona said, not removing his sights on Y/N. “Oh don’t you think I would stay,” Ollin was worried about Y/N they nothing more than a servant. It was just by chance they walked in.  “That will be all,” Leona unhappily repeated taking his sights off the lion. Ollin flew towards Y/N and whispered, “Give a roar if something happens,” Y/N oblivious did not understand what Ollin meant. “Come a little closer,” Leona said fixated on Y/N. “I won’t bite.” Leona grinned like the infamous Cheshire Cat. He must say Y/N is physically attractive perfect for a mate. He’s know them since childhood and they were kind and well-loved. “Leona it’s chaos out there and someone needed to do something.” Y/N warned. They looked around for exits in case Leona got mad.

       “It’s tough being king and alone,” That was misplaced you thought. It wasn’t even an answer to what they said. “I deserve a mate, someone to rule by my side,” Leona circled around Y/N. “And you perfectly fit the part,” “Excuse me I don’t believe I heard you right,” Y/n said. “You’re beautiful/handsome after all, perfect fit for my mate,” Leona stood by your side bending down/looking up to be at your eye level. “A king without a mate is sad, but a king without an heir a tragedy.” “You can’t be serious,” you said backing away from Leona. “I’ve never been more serious,” you walked away from Leona going to the door where he stopped you in your tracks. “Be Prepared for a stunning proposal,” Leona said leaning into you. “Power and beauty should bond.” Leona walked closer to you. Which resulted in you backing into a wall. Leona pined you to the wall. Leona went closer to your face resulting in you slapping him. .Oh well now really have be mate,” he rubbed his hand on the spot you slapped him. You quickly run to your room and hid. “One way or another you will be my mate.” Leona yelled. 

       Leona gather the kingdom. He suggested you get ready and wear your best outfit. You knew what would happen so you did as he said, “let the kingdom be my witness!” Leona said. “I choose Y/N as my mate.” You need something would happen if you didn’t do as he said. “I accept,” you said, how bad could it be? Maybe Leona wouldn’t be the worst husband.

Twisted Wonderland OC: Keira Howl, inspired by Kida from 'Atlantis: The Lost Empire' (and Nala from 'The Lion King').

The fierce older sister of Jack Howl and Leona Kingscholar's best friend since childhood. Very strong and assertive personality, but very loyal, understanding and sympathetic towards everyone. Seems very intimidating and scary on the outside, but she is actually a big smiley softie that loves Shoujo manga. She gets easily flustered and embarrassed, which she tries to hide under her masculinity, but fails.

Unless her loved ones get hurt, and she will destroy if she has to.

This took place in where you found a way to get back home and you can get to travel in both worlds whenever you wish

Leona (surprisingly) attended the dorm meeting and actually used his legs and he noticed something about Vil

Vil is ranting nobody(almost barely) can hear it but he has good ears. He wonders what made him so upset

Then he remembers that Vil took a trip to your world with you and when he came back, he's like this. He's curious of what made him so upset, but it's not like he could careless so he just leaves it be.

After the meeting, he goes back to his room to just lounge again

On the other hand, Jack seemed to notice that Vil had been a little bit upset all day and decided to ask his senior about it

"I dunno, Leona probably pissed him off or talked shit to him again" Ruggie just shrugged "Oh ok, thanks Ruggie-senpai"

He just decided to ask you when you passed by since your with Vil last weekend and he guessed something must've happened

Jack didn't expect a movie could upset Vil this much so he wants you to show him this "Disney" that you're talking about

He invites his two seniors over cause why not, Ruggie seems curious about it while Leona... he doesn't get why he agreed to this

You, on the other hand, just play it off since you can't turn back now and you wanna see how this will turn. Turning on the t.v. you borrowed from Sam and putting the CD in, the movie starts showing the title 'The Lion King'

During the movie, Ruggie seemed to be cheering for the hyenas and Scar (Leona was silently cheering for Scar too and felt proud on that scene where Mufasa fell down)

Jack was calm and attentive the whole time, silently guessing the next scene and what's going to happen

Leona hates all the songs except for "Be Prepared". That song was definetly stuck in his head now. Both him and Ruggie cringed at the scene with Nala and Simba

All three of them didn't expect the ending. All of them knows now why Vil is upset of Disney and why you think of The Great Seven was villains.

After the movie, Leona looks so ready to turn everything into sand. He's about to pounce at the t.v. but Jack hold him back while Ruggie is just laughing at Leona's actions

"Scar deserves to be a king more than Simba" Leona said with a child-like pout. He just calmed down after a long time of holding him back from destroying the t.v.

You just sighed with a weak smile at the fact that Leona's child-like pout looks so damn cute (and you wanna slap Ruggie that is still cackling and didn't help at all)

A week has passed and Leona is more moody, Ruggie is just fucking laughing at Leona and teases him "Your getting mad at a kids show, are you a kid? shishishi", and Jack is still the same but is worrying a little bit for his senior

Self-Indulgent TWST Geography

A long post of generalised geography headcanons for the world of TWST complete with continents for my own personal needs.  The post divides locations by Continent.

Anyway why is there a homeland whose name is just the definition of a desert.

Continents (and ocean)

Errant - a western continent in Twisted Wonderland. Mzunguko - the second largest continent in Twisted Wonderland.   Yalmae - the largest continent in Twisted Wonderland.   Abíní - a continent West of Errant. Tridente Ocean - the largest ocean in Twisted Wonderland.

Errant

Rose Kingdom – a country in the western region of Errant. It isn’t a particularly large country, and traveling from it to its neighbouring countries is possible via buses or car. Crownsshire – a county in Rose Kingdom Crowns – the capital  of Crownsshire. It is the town Riddle, Trey, and Che’nya live in.  

Land of Pyroxene – a large country in Errant.  Known for its cold, snowy winters and history with legends pertaining to five of the Great Seven. Waldburg – province Vil’s family is from.  Largely influenced by another country within Errant. Argent – a province in Land of Pyroxene.   Verre – a city in Argent.  Trein and Cater are from here.  Félicité Cosmetics originates here. Miroir – a province in Land of Pyroxene.  Has a large outlet mall popular with fashion-lovers and shopaholics.  The Ténèbres brand originates here. Enchantée – a town in Miroir. Jack and Vargas live here, whilst Vil and his father move here. Scharlachrot - a province in Land of Pyroxene. Epel’s Village of Harvest resides here, and is famous for its widespread organic produce.

Isle of Lamentation – island country, its popularised global name is a translation from the isle’s original Nísos Thrínos.  It has robust technological advancements and is the homeland of the popular idol group On the Edge, known for having concerts with elaborate imagery and visual effects from some of the best technicians available.  Due to legends of the God of the Underworld,  dogs are extremely popular on the Isle of Lamentation. Kapnós – capital of the Isle of Lamentations where the Shroud family resides.  

Valley of Thorns – an isolated country small in population, largely consisting of a large mountain range.  The closer one is to where its Queen resides, the colder it gets.  It is said the Valley of Thorns can go weeks with nothing but moonlight. Geimhreadh - technically the name of the forest near the Valley of Thorns’ mountain range, where the Queen makes her home at its peak.  Its name spread to the residential areas nearby.

Mzunguko

Afterglow Savannah – country in Mzunguko,  ‘Afterglow’ acts as a loose translation of its name, Baadaye.  It lies in eastern Mzunguko.  Famous for its royal guards and leading role in nature conservation. Kiburi – a county in the east of the Afterglow Savannah. Mwamba – capital of Kiburi, where the Kingscholar royal family lives. Maisha – a county in Afterglow Savannah, with its capital sharing the same name.   Jioni – a town in Maisha.  Ruggie and his family live here.

Manyoya – county in Afterglow Savannah.  Well-known for a famously expansive library and a high population of avian beastfolk. Uzuri  – a city in Manyoya, where Rook is from.

Land of Hot Sands – one of many countries in the continent of Yalmae,.  Within the country, it’s referred to as Aldif’.  Rich with its magical history and origins of astrology, Aldif’ nurtures Magicians skilled in divination.  It has a vivid musical scene as well. Misbah - governate of Aldif’. Yatamanaa – capital of Misbah, a largely lucrative city within Aldif’ and city where Kalim and Jamil live.

Port of Jubilee - a diverse nation where Sam’s family lives, owning an extensive emporium.  A vast amount of cultures reside in Port of Jubilee, many sharing common ancestors and languages with one another. Nanm - province in Port of Jubilee. Sekrè - port town in Nanm that Sam is from.  His family owns an impressive emporium popular with locals.

Tridente Ocean

Coral Sea - a sea within the Tridente Ocean.  Many of coastlines range across countries within Errant, Mzunguko, and Yalmae.  Beneath its waters lies a kingdom sharing the same name as the sea.

Errant - the continent of Errant has the homelands based off movies such as Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, Hercules, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella.  The name stems from certain scenes in the movie marking a particular moment the protagonists feel out of place or stray off the expected course.

Alice in Wonderland: Alice’s misadventures begin when she makes the decision to follow a strange rabbit, straying off the course of simply reading and studying as her sister wished, where the curious and at worst annoying strange creatures and nature of Wonderland take a turn when she meets the Caterpillar, who questions Alice’s place and identity, and the stress of her situation and being unable to return home overwhelms her emotionally.

Snow White - the horrific moment Snow White, in a state of panic, rushes through a dark forest, where her fears envision hidden horrors within the trees and wildlife.

Hercules - after refusing to listen to Phil’s warnings about Megara being in cahoots with Hades, Hercules faces the devastating fact that Megara (reluctantly) deceived him, and loses his superhuman strength and faith in himself.

Sleeping Beauty - shortly after meeting a man she falls for, Aurora becomes devastated and resigned to her fate being betrothed to a complete stranger out of responsibility for her future and country.

Beauty and the Beast - Maurice’s ventures through a mysterious forest consequently leads him to the Beast’s castle in a desperate attempt to escape cold, only to be imprisoned by the Beast for intruding, ultimately putting the story into motion.  After Belle makes a deal to swap places with her father and free him, Belle starts off terrified and in over her head despite saving her father’s life.

Cinderella - after the mice’s hard work creating a fitting ballgown for Cinderella to enjoy the ball, her stepsisters ruin the dress and Cinderella’s chances of leaving her oppressive family’s home.  Her distress and tears lead her to meeting the Fairy Godmother.

Mzunguko - “circle” in Swahili, the language prominent in Lion King’s names, lyrics, and Rafiki’s dialogue, as well as the official language of Kenya, where much of the movie’s settings take inspiration and blatantly feature.  Taken from the iconic “Circle of Life” song.

Tridente Ocean - “trident” in Italian.  Yes, I hear you.  The author is from Denmark.  The statue is in Denmark.  The movie references the statue in Denmark.  However the surname Ashengrotto and Azul’s mother running a ristorante screams Italian and there’s the overall edgy mafia vibe the Octatrio has going on.  I win this one.

Yalmae -  “shine” in Arabic (يلمع).  I wanted a name that illustrated the vibrant, lively diversity of the continent’s many countries, cultures, flora, and fauna.  Something akin to a name that inspires a welcoming feeling.

Abíní - “morning” in Navajo.  I wanted a name that inspires energy and enthusiasm, like a sunrise in summer.

Rose Kingdom

Crownsshire - just the most painfully English name I could think of.  “Crown” refers to, naturally, the crown of the Queen of Hearts.  Also decided to make the Rose Kingdom its own, smaller, more limited country, instead of allowing its apparent monarchy to leech off 20+ different countries Crowns - do you have any idea how genuinely shocking it is we don’t actually have a town here named this.

Afterglow Savannah

Baadaye - “afterglow” in Swahili.  The official and native name of the Afterglow Savannah.  Interestingly, my findings found translations of it meaning “future” as well, which I consider fitting. Kiburi - “pride” in Swahili, can refer to a ‘pride of lions’ or confidence (often overconfidence). Mwamba - “rock” in Swahili, alluding to the Pride Rock that Mufasa’s pride resides in. Maisha - “life” in Swahili. Jioni - “evening” in Swahili.  This refers to where anywhere the sun doesn’t reach, Simba shouldn’t wander, because it’s too dangerous. Originally, I wanted to go with “Kivuri”, which means “shadow”.  However when I went to double check that ‘shadowland’ was a thing in Lion King, referring to where the Elephant Graveyard is, it’s actually a song from the Broadway musica called “Shadowland”, sung by Nala (Heather Headley). It both mourns the desolate state of the Pridelands under Scar’s tyranny, and narrates Nala’s resolve to leave and find a way to save her people and their land.  The song is absolutely gorgeous, solemn, and powerful, and contributes more than any live-action CGI Disney movie could ever come up with.  Its instrumental composition features the melody lei-motif prominent in the animated film (yes, That song.  the heartbreaking one).  It’s one of my favourites in Lion King alongside “He Lives in You” and “Not One of Us” because I like the ones where the chorus goes off. Please just listen to the Lion King Broadway soundtrack it makes me cry with how gorgeous and heartfelt it is.   Anyway in their money-grubbing ways I hope Disney puts the Broadway on Disney+ so some brave soul takes one for the team to pirate it Manyoya - intended to mean “feather”, but to my understanding it also encompasses “fur”. Uzuri - “beauty” in Swahili.  Nothing too deep here, just something pertaining to Rook.

Land of Hot Sand

Aldif’ - “warmth” in Arabic (الدفء).  Meant to allude to a comforting warmth, kind of hinting that the popularisation of “Land of Hot Sand” more or less leaves the official name lost in translation. Misbah - “lamp/light” in Arabic (مصباح), naturally referencing the magical lamp sought after throughout the movie. Yatamanaa - “wish” in Arabic (يتمنى).  Meant to be bit a bit of a cheeky play on words.  The “wish” inside the “lamp”.

Land of Pyroxene

Waldburg - Wald is "forest” in German.   References the forest that Snow White runs away into after being warned of the Evil Queen’s intentions. Argent - “silver” in French.  References Cinderella’s silver dress. Verre - “glass” in French.  References Cinderella’s glass slipper. Miroir - “mirror” in French.  References both the Mirror of Snow White and the enchanted mirror Beast gives Belle. Enchantée - “enchanted” in French.  Ties into the theme of enchantments, curses, and charms prominent in French fairy tales, and specifically makes me think of the Enchanted Rose from Beauty and the Beast.   Scharlachrot - “scarlet” in German.  References the red colour that hides the infamous green of the poison apple’s true nature.

Isle of Lamentation

Nísos Thrínos - Greek for the isle’s name. Kapnós - “smoke” in Greek.  References Hades’ iconic appearance surrounded by black smoke.

Valley of Thorns

Geimhreadh - “winter” in Irish.  References the winter court of Unseelie fae in Celtic folklore.

Port of Jubilee

Nanm - "soul” in Haiitan Creole.  References the importance of determination and drive prominent in Princess and the Frog.

Sekrè - “secret” in Haitian Creole.  References Dr Facilier’s ulterior motives.

Where did that come from? Savanaclaw Edition

Welcome to part two of my "Where did that come from?" series. Today, we have "The Rebel from the Savanna" and “The Lion King”(1994). I don’t expect too many secrets, but let's see if I'm proven wrong. I do love any excuse to watch a movie with such great music. Again if you see anything I have missed please tell me!

Overall

Our cast is based on the various animals in the movie. Leona is Scar, Ruggie the hyena trio and the precious heir to the Afterglow Savanna's throne, Cheka, is Simba and Farena his father is Mufasa, and Malleus is as well to an extent.

We don’t get to see anything like the opening to Lion King in Twisted Wonderland where Simba is shown to the inhabitants of Pride Rock, but we are given a nod to it in Leona's post overblot flashback and in a dream.

When the Hearstlabuyl gang and Yuu are cornered by Savanaclaw students it mirrors when Simba, Nala and Zazu are approached by the hyenas Shenzi, Banzai and Ed. Unfortunately for them, no Mufasa came to scare them off.

I like how there is a bit of actual biology sprinkled in with the character backstories. Leona talks about the strong women in his hometown as lion prides and hyena cackles are led by the females who do most of the work and call the shots. However, wolves are the outlier in this as wolf packs are led by the alpha male and female, so it functions more like how a family is led by the parents.

Character specific

🦁 Leona Kingscholar 🦁

Leona and Scar both have well, scars, on their right eyes, presumably from fights in the past.

Personality wise both the Savanaclaw dorm leader and the King of the Beasts have a similar defeatist outlook on life. They can never have what they want, so why struggle only to never get it?

Scar and Leona both have the not so affectionate term for their nephews of "hairball"

Leona has quoted Scar's AMAZING villain song "Be prepared" so many times and every time he does it, I can't help but look like this.

Leona and Scar both have an affinity for sitting on high ledges with green light cast on them.

Who did it better?

Vs

Leona and Scar both make big promises of luxury treatment and finally getting recognition for your efforts to their followers. Unfortunately they break these leaving their respective followers heartbroken and confused, namely the hyenas, in both cases.

Leona mirrors Scar by planning to run over his cause for inferiority with their supporters. Wildebeest for Mufasa and a crowd of spectators for Malleus. Fortunately, Malleus survives, Mufasa however wasn't as lucky.

I’m not sure if this was the true inspiration, but when there is a cloud of dust hanging in the air during and after the stampede I instantly thought of Leona's Unique magic and the background for when he overblots.

Leona is just as bitter about being compared to his older brother as Scar and both of them will snap at anyone who dares to remind them that their brother exists.

The end to the victory for these two ends with them being forced to confess to their crimes, and then left to the mercy of both their betrayed supporters and their enemies.

🐾 Ruggie Bucchi 🐾

Scar's hyenas all have their own iconic laughs like Ruggie's "shishishishi".

Ruggie follows Leona around and does a large amount of work for him with little thanks or repayment similar to the trio of hyenas.

Ruggie mirrors the hyena trio by using his unique magic to control the crowd to run over the Diasomnia fakes, like how the hyenas scared the Wildebeest into a stampede.

🐺 Jack Howl 🐺

You may have noticed I left Jack out of the equation, but let me be real with you, I have no idea what he is based on. He works as a great foil to Leona with his "Hard work is all you need" versus Leona's "Why bother, if it's not guaranteed" mentality, but I got nothing. I've seen people say he is based off of a character from the TV show, or all wolves in Disney cannon and other such claims, but I got nothing. He's just a wolf, don't know why he is one, he just is.

🐱 Cheka Kingscholar 🐱

Cheka's necklace holds a blue feather on the end that looks just like one of Zazu's, the hornbill advisor to Mufasa, own tail feathers. I wonder where he got it from?

Cheka has the same unreciprocated love for his uncle as Simba, at least as a child.

👑🦁 Farena Kingscholar 👑🦁

Farena mirrors Mufasa by asking Leona why he wasn't the ceremony for Cheka, in the flashback after Leona's overblot.

Alright, so 🙏 In part 3 of the event, we learn that the trio that usually watches over Cheka are predisposed with something else. From the way Leona reacts to this news, it’s implied those three will be participating in Catch the Tail. The number 3 is also just sus because that’s the EXACT number of people needed to form a team for the competition. it’s highly likely we’ll see the NRC squad go up against Cheka’s trio of guards.

It is said that most of the important positions in the guard are held by women, as real lionesses do most of the hunting. This implies that those assigned to guard the young prince Cheka must be women; the nameless temporary replacement guards are also women.

Then… Knowing all of this, does that mean 👁️ 👄 👁️ We will get to see… mayhaps… new women in TWST???? Strong ass women who can kick your butt??? With unique artwork of their own????????

dbsksbsiwjsn I wonder if they’ll be twisted from any particular inspiration??? I’m trying to think of iconic trios from The Lion King, but I can only think of the hyenas (who probably wouldn’t hold a position that high up, if Sunset Savanna society is anything like that of Pride Rock)… The next thing I’m thinking of is Timon and Pumba, but that’s a duo. Maybe the third seat could be filled by… I don’t know, (grown-up) Nala? Rafiki????? I always thought Nala would be a 5 year old like Cheka, so I’m leaning more toward the other options.

OOOOh, or???? Maybe that trio IS twisted from the hyenas meaning Ruggie isn’t twisted from the hyenas???? Kifaji mentions that bird beastmen like himself are rare, and even Farena/Falena has difficulties uniting different kinds of beastmen. What if the hyenas worked their way up to this important position just like Kifaji was able to become Grand Chamberlain?? Keeping these opportunities open to beastmen of all kinds could be one way Farena/Falena tries to unite them.

I guess it could just as easily be three random lionesses too (there’s a whole group of them in TLK that help fight against Scar in the final showdown), but I’m praying to see more characters with explicitly named Disney counterparts xbasvjskwwnif I’m really excited to see how this turns out now!! 🤞

I saw, like, one blog mention this already, and I just kinda feel like I wanna also address the elephant in the room for a second with Leona and his family. I know we don’t really have a canon reveal of Farena right now, but considering that we’ve seen Cheka....it’s pretty obvious there’s been a lot of white washing in terms of Leona and his family. And even white washing in regards to Leona himself.

I don’t particularly feel, this time, it’s a case of “they made the one based off the villain darker, and that’s racist”. In the original TLK movie? Yeah, there’s definitely undertones of that. And not just with that movie, or Disney, honestly. The idea that villains HAVE to have darker colors has been a big problem in all sorts of visual medias for a very, very long time. It’s nothing new, and until we start being louder about wanting it changed, no one is going to. I’ve been an art student for YEARS. I KNOW this is a big problem. It even affects your grades, sometimes, if you go against the norm, or can cause arguments. And I’m white for god’s sake, so that’s the smallest things I’ve witnessed from my pov. They are still teaching this sort of thing, and encouraging it, and they have no intention of seeing what’s potentially wrong with it enough to stop. Of course, with Scar specifically, they also wanted him to look a bit like his voice actor, and Jeremy Irons has black hair and green eyes. But, I digress, this has still been a problem for a long time, and will continue to be.

But, back on topic. I don’t think there’s a case of that with Twisted specifically, although I’m 100% open to hearing otherwise, and can see exactly how it looks that way at a glance. Mostly because they’re not really vilifying the villains, they’re just making them flawed and imperfect characters. And Leona is neither better, nor worse, than any of the rest of them are. I just think they straight up white washed them (the Kingscholars). Leona, too.

Sure, it’s a fictional world, and you could, I suppose, argue that this is a fictional land, and maybe the last few generations of Kingscholars and their family’s just been lighter skinned, with someone on Leona’s parents/grandparent’s side being a little darker, ended with resulting in what we have now. But, let’s not pretend we all obviously know Afterglow is based off of TLK, which was based off Africa. (Mostly Kenya, specifically.) Sooooooooo.... it’s still a little...yikes to see it. To put it mildly.

And we all know there’s also just as big of a problem with Japanese things depicting black people as there is in nearly any other media. So. Let’s not ignore the reason behind them choosing to do what they did.

Because, my god. You can color your lions however you freaking want to. Red, yellow, brown, it doesn’t have to matter, really. Especially if we get rid of the stupid “every villain has to have dark colors” bs. But, if you’re gonna humanize them (this can most certainly apply to Ruggie too, but if you wanted to show that many races live in that country, of course you can have some characters from there show that), there’s definitely ways you can do it WITHOUT white washing them, and still have them look like the animals you originally drew them as. Case in point.
