Okay I’m going to geek out about Toshinori’s costume designs because I’m an English major and analyzing tiny details in text is what we do and also I love??? The designs! And each one tells us so much about All Might and his focus during each costume.
Costume 1 (Young Might):
Tumblr media
So first off, despite young All Might’s longtime dream of being a hero, his suit is mostly black. A stark difference from comics books and his later self which tend to be bright primary colors. The few dashes of primary colors he has are desaturated, even in the second instance where we see this costume. This would have likely been the only costume Toshinori designed himself, as David became his designer in college.
Obviously, others have pointed out the similarities to Nana’s suit, just like how Izuku copied AM’s, so I don’t think it will be necessary for me to point that out. But this suit is also very practical. Something the flashy All Might isn’t really known for, but let me point the details out. He has boots, gauntlets, as well as what appears to be protection for his upper torso, and even for his neck. A decent balance between more protection and more weight, which would slow a hero down. Also, unlike Nana’s suit, his extends completely down the arms. The only skin surface available is that of his hands, something that stays the same through all of his costumes and as such, must be something he personally insists on. In media, gloves often represent someone with secrets, or a guarded personality. All Might not wearing gloves shows how open he is, not just with his friends but strangers too. And it’s humble, too. It’s not an unfeeling, covered hand extending to you when you’re in danger, it’s the bare-handed reach of a friend, and I fully believe that’s why Toshi goes without gloves. Also it’s possibly a sensory thing for him as well, which goes with my canon-supported theory that this man has ADHD, but that’s a nerd rant for another time.
The colors are important because while obviously they mimic Nana, you can practically see through the color choice that Toshinori is not in his right mindset here. While later the oversaturation of colors serves to show how his own heroism has made him into something Else, and outside of his own head, leaving the man inside to shrivel away, these muted colors show that Toshinori has not yet blossomed. Also in the brief scenes we see of him when he is younger, Toshinori is very solemn. The one scene we get of him smiling when he’s young is when Izuku is comparing them at the same age, and even then, it’s more of a smirk as opposed to the signature All Might grin we all know and love. Black also is just a reasonable color for something like crime-fighting. Black shows the least grime/dirt, so he could reasonably spend more hours out in this costume without having to come home and wash it/trade it out. (Which is something that I love that this series includes, by the way!)
Costume 2-ish:
Tumblr media
Toshinori adds some shoulder pads for the fight with AFO, probably expecting to stand side-by-side with his mentor. I could give a more full-body image but this is really the only difference I could pick out.
Costume 3 (College Might):
Tumblr media
This is the first costume of All Might’s that is designed by David Shield.
First off, props to David. He’s an awesome designer. He not only made a new design, but incorporated several choices from AM’s previous suit, and definitely conferred a lot with Toshi on how he wanted his suit to look while still ensuring its functionality.
Black is traded for a dark, unsaturated blue, giving AM a more peaceful look, as navy blue is considered to be a calming color. (Even Endeavor wears it! But maybe copying AM and not wearing it for the same purposes?) All Might’s cape is also changed from red to blue, taking away the dark look and making it the color of the sky, again adding to that Symbol of Peace idea that is Toshinori’s dream. The gauntlets and boots remain, but the chest-piece has been removed, offering up more mobility. The yellow of his belt has been brightened, and added in place of the blues on his gauntlets and boots, giving him an overall more friendly look as opposed to the more subdued one he had before with the blue accents. The red has been removed as well, and by moving it to his body, it gives the impression of veins and the blood that is pumping away through the heart of this hero, which is fantastic for someone who cares as much as Toshinori does. White was also added vertically on the sides of the suit, thinning out the very intimidating form of Toshi and making him more approachable, while adding a more pure look to his overall form. This appears to be in part, a stylistic choice on David’s end that follows through to the other suits, though it’s hard to know if it remains on the Bronze Age Suit as well.
Overall the brighter colors telegraph that Toshinori is doing much better mentally at this point. He now has A Friend, and for the time being, is safer from the troubles at home, until he has to return.
Costume 4 (Bronze Age):
Tumblr media
We don’t even get a full look at this suit, indicating that its time in use was likely short-lived. As I’ve seen others suggest, it seems very likely that when All Might returned to Japan, he went straight down to business and began doing vigilante work as he tried to track down AFO. However, possibly due to a combination of not finding him and All Might’s rising popularity, he seems to abandon this track and move on to a different form of heroism, which his suit symbolizes. I’ll briefly point out that Toshinori returns to the primarily black suit he had as a teenager, as well as the shadows of his face that add to the idea that as soon as he got back to Japan, he reverted to the mindset he had when he left.
Costume 5 (Silver Age):
Tumblr media
This suit indicates to me that this period was All Might’s prime, despite his later suit being considered the Golden Age of All Might. (And even though it’s my least-favorite design.) He has the typical cape of a hero, and the bright colors are now fully of typical comic book style. The circular design on his chest indicates a target, but with being cast in white and surrounded in red, gives the impression that he himself is not the target, but the villainy around him is. Or at least, that is likely the thought process for this design. Other than the dashes of white here and there, the colors are very solid, possibly indicating a more stable, but single-minded train of thought, something AM is notorious for. No offense to Dr. Shield, but I would have mixed the colors better in here, and the cape connection is too bulky for someone who’s as jacked in the shoulders as Toshinori is. Alas, I am not the designer. We shall move on.
Costume 6 (Golden Age):
Tumblr media
I love this suit. Plenty of analysis has been done on it already, but I think it’s a fantastic representation of how Toshinori’s been crushed under the very image he had originally wanted to create. His shadows are darkest and most severe here, reminiscent of how body-builders dehydrate themselves to get the best appearance of their musculature. His posing is also more inward, as opposed to the silver age, with the angles of his elbows being less directly out and more in, and instead of appearing confident, it’s more of how a cat puffs out its hair to make itself appear larger when it’s scared. I had a long bit to go with this but it was eaten by the Tumblr gremlins. Basically I believe this suit was made post AFO-battle. All Might is declaring he’s not finished yet, all while knowing his time is running out. This suit has several callbacks to the original suit David designed for him, with the navy, though more saturated base and the red lines running throughout the form, though the gauntlets and boots from before have been integrated into the suit itself. This could reflect David’s mindset as well, as he reminisces about the days when Toshinori was healthy and happy, when now Toshinori’s health is rapidly fading.
Anyway, here’s my costume analysis! I think it adds a little more insight to Toshinori’s mental state and situations in the years outside of the show as well as in them, and I hope you enjoyed this read! I’d love to hear other ideas too, if anyone has them!

irken membranes au au rambling below cut
DIB is an invader here; sneaking around, collecting information, and exploring the unknown, sometimes combat is involved but not often. He was a scientist though, but researching mechas, fauna, and others just isn't enough for him, he needs... more hands-on experiments.
GAZ, on the other hand, is a navigator; basically treating the panel like it's a video game, destroying dangers ahead, scanning for unknown territory, and flying the armada to a predetermined destination. Her headpiece also doubled as a video game console so she can just grab it whenever she wants when she was off-duty. GAZ may like beating people up, but games are her top priority. Let's just say that she was training to be an Irken soldier until she saw the navigator panel.
The Almighty Tallest MEMBRANE here is constantly on calls and researching, currently working on how to get to the fourth dimension without getting sensory overload. Very straight posture but he still looks really scrawny and weak so I gave him an optional cape for a much more imposing silhouette.
The story here is that since MEMBRANE is always on call all the time, GAZ got tired of being brushed off by him and went to DIB to complain about it. Why DIB? He's the only one here she ever talks to, all the other Irkens are either just snobby, frightened, or dumb, her words. When GAZ headed to DIB's room to rant to him about it, he looks at her, perfectly conveying the phrase "are you kidding me?" They [yadda yadda yadda] and now they're both planning to leave Irk/Armada to see how long it would be before he notices both of his smeets are gone.
To prevent their father from noticing the voot pathway on the holographic map, they flew into uncharted territory. So yea, they basically float around in the space for a few months because them, occasionally trade with space merchants for materials, taking shifts because Irkens do need sleep for top performance. Then one day, DIB spots a backwater planet, one with living organisms on it, seemingly disconnected from the cosmos network. The perfect hideout for a stupid plan.
It's Urth, they landed on Urth.

Rewatching spiderman 2 (surprise surprise) and i am always struck by how gently and compassionately Peter speaks to Otto at the end of the movie. This is someone Peter has every reason to be angry with, who has personally hurt him and his loved ones - but he also recognizes that Otto is someone who has suffered immensely, been made a freak show by the media (and boy does Peter understand that), who was forced on the run and left alone to deal with trauma and grief. Peter is the only one after the accident to treat him like a human being, with incredible understanding, and that is just...that does something to me
and on the same note, Otto listens. most villains would have laughed at Peter or scorned him or even thought they were too far gone. but Otto takes hold of the mercy he was extended. he shows Peter kindness in turn and takes responsibility for his actions, because really, i think all he needed was someone to tell him he wasn’t a monster :’)
and i dunno nothing will ever top that climax in how emotionally satisfying it is

I'm not, like, a huge pedantic nerd but I do activate some sort of primordial threat display whenever someone calls a new hope "episode 4".
I can take it if you call it Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope like you're just a super nerd quoting the exact crawl from the 81 reissue or something but something about just casually referring to it as "episode 4" by short instead of "the first movie" or "a new hope" or even just "star wars". makes me kick out reticulating hairs at you. My neck frills are at max. My skin has changed color to display bright blue rings.

It's crazy to me that the poets we study were all allowed to write from the heart and no professor stood over their shoulders saying "actually you should change that word here or rewrite this part here" but when I do it I get "this part is too ambiguous" or "I don't know what this means, try using more specific words" as if this isn't literally the No One Knows What This Means genre where we study the "No One Knows What This Means" poems and are forced to attempt an interpretation in essay form. It means something to me; I don't care how you interpret it.

PSA: this got suuuuper long, again, like every time I want to say something about Doctor Who and end up in places I was not expecting to end up.
Wait, so you're telling me that the Master's name/nickname* is Koschei? As in, Koschei the Deathless, also known as Koschei the captive (I'm down the Wikipedia rabbit hole). Slavic folklore antihero. Koschei with his soul hidden away, where not even him can find it back. Koschei the Death God, Pale God, Winter God... Oh, this is perfect. In the Aarne-Thompson-Uther Index**, Koschei is classed under AT 302, "The Giant Without A Heart", and AT 313, " The Magic Flight"... Oh, this is fascinating.
And on the other hand, the Doctor's nickname is... Theta Sigma. As in, theta, eighth letter of the greek alphabet, and according to Urban Dictionary (more rabbit holes, yey), "the pole around which all math pivots, especially calculus" / "the brainwave of being in a dream state were u can receive messages from other dimensions" and also (man I love UD, but also you guys are turning into what-does-my-name-mean, lmao) : "Theta's most often take life seriously, are a good judge of character but befriends anyone they meet. Theta's are very deep thinkers and feelers, meaning they contemplate every aspect of life and when they love, they love deep and long. Theta's are sensitive and look for the good in others. Theta's rarely accept defeat and dig in deeper if you tell them something can't be done. The last place on earth you ever want to be is to be the one that pushed a Theta in to giving up, as this is rare and to be accomplished you have to be very cold at heart."
Like I'm not even joking, that's literally the UD definition of what a Theta person is, and damn, was the definition crafted before or after the expanded DW story where they unveiled Thete ? Because that is a bit (A LOT) on the nose. And on the other hand, sigma, 18th letter of the Greek alphabet, used and overused in practically every scientific domain, the letter/sign at the end of a word (world...), and, again according to UD, and again I'm not inventing anything: "a popular, successful, but highly independent and self-reliant person", seriously what the hell. Either the writers who decided that the Doctor and the Master should have nicknames did a splendid research job, or the people who decide what slang means (linguists? Are traditional linguists in charge of explaining new, modern slang? I feel like it but also I'm trying to imagine my old linguistic professor updating Urban Dictionary and uuh... okay, where was I) were/are hardcore Whovians.
*I'm going with the theory that Time Lords have at least three names, their real name that only spouse/partner and parents know, the one that is so complicated to pronounce "only children with their hearts in the right place can understand it", a nickname for friends during the Academy years, and the name they choose when they graduate/are adults. So in the case of our favourite unhealthy toxic duo: unknow/Koschei and Theta Sigma/The Master and The Doctor.
**The Aarne-Thompson-Uther Index, or ATU Index, is a catalogue of folktales-types, it's a useful tool when you study folklore because it allows you to see all the tales that use the same archetypes/structures. Basically you can travel all around the world and find the same stories using the same narrative elements and tools, adapted to the language/religion/geography. It is fascinating.

SBR, JoJolion and JoJoLanda don't take place in the "reset" timeline from the end of Stone Ocean, it's a separate alternative universe.
You know, how Funny Valentine and D4C could visit different universes?
Like, Irene's dad would be a not-Jotaro, but the person in Jotaro's place in the family tree is JoJoLion Kira, who becomes JoJoLion Josuke.
It would be mad funny if the Rohan in chapter 2 is original recipe Rohan, but I feel it's just going to be this universe's Rohan

Schauspieler spielen mit u.A. Hubert Kramar.)

Because of how I practice I tend to heavily associate the stories of the Gods with real world occurrences/predictions and I’m often happily surprised by what I find, but namely Loki, the deity associated with chaos and fire, playing a large part in the end of the cosmos.
The heat death of the universe is a theory that everything around us will reach an equilibrium and freeze over, no longer able to cause entropy (chaos), which is very interesting, considering the lack of what Loki is so heavily associated with is likely to indicate the end of the cosmos.
BUT! There is also a new theory that the universe will continue to heat up, as it is doing so right now.
“Now, he said, researchers have confirmed that the universe is getting hotter over time due to the gravitational collapse of cosmic structure, and the heating will likely continue.”
What we know though, is that where there's entropy (chaos), there's heat.
So whether the universe freezes over, explodes and destroys itself, or just continues to exist for the unforeseeable future, that’s just a fascinating connection.

Watching Two Heroes again reminded me of something I haven’t really seen talked about a lot, but
All Might Keeping Secrets and Self-Isolating Led to His Downfall
Tumblr media
Obviously, right? Everyone and their mother’s said this, and it’s clearly meant by the story. But I think David Shield is the best example of this, and I haven’t really seen the Two Heroes movie mentioned when having this conversation. This is my explanation of this movie being the epitome of this idea, and the time where I believe All Might learns from his mistake — even if it’s too late for him to change the course of his narrative.
Tumblr media
The movie clearly indicates early on, by All Might himself, that David Shield, his “best friend” and sidekick from his college days has not been informed of One for All, and All Might intends to keep it that way. Deku, ever the audience lens character for the world of My Hero, questions it, to which All Might answers it’s to keep his friend safe.
Tumblr media
This is shown to not be the case. In fact, by not telling his friend about One for All, David, someone who is good and concerned about his friend, turns to villainy out of desperation to save him. If All Might had simply told him about how his power works, and that he’s passed the torch on to Deku, then David wouldn’t have had as much need to worry. And this is something that All Might had several opportunities to reveal, even over the course of the movie itself. Most especially when David’s checking Toshinori’s vitals and his quirk levels. (Which, I have no idea how you would even trace something like that, but I digress.)
Tumblr media
Then, to add salt to the wound, All for One targets David regardless of his knowledge of One for All. Just his connection to All Might as a former sidekick was enough to put him in the line of fire. All Might’s secret-keeping didn’t protect him from anything, and instead turned an already bad situation worse. In the end, presumably David Shield is put away in prison, because when we see Iron Might in the manga, only Melissa is pictured, not her father, and if David had been available I refuse to believe that he wouldn’t have had a hand in the suit’s creation. All Might’s time limit in his muscle form is also shortened once again.
Tumblr media
Ultimately I believe this specific situation is what led to him eventually urging Deku to not make the same mistake he did, in not telling anyone about One for All.
Tumblr media
Also, the specificity of Wolfram being drawn this way after being defeated, gaunt and steaming, paralleling someone else we all know and love, felt very intentional. I don’t have more to say about it at the moment, I just thought it was interesting and that I’d point it out.

Satyrs and “Fauns” vs. Panes and Fauns in Greco Roman Mythology
This is an imperfect post but- Usually, when we think of satyrs, we think of goatmen. which yes, those guys in myths are satyrs. but in art they are depicted very differently from most satyrs. PLEASE NOTE; I’m just a nerd, and i highly suggest doing your own research about this and other topics.
there are a handful of different kinds of satyrs, and here I will list a few-
ordinary satyrs- wild men of the woods with horse ears and tails, snub noses and fully erect phalli. they are portrayed as lustful and drunken. Usually associated with rustic gods.
silens- elderly satyrs who take their name from Silenus, the chief satyr in satyr plays and art
tityroi- satyrs playing the aulos, an ancient duel flute.
panes- named for the most recognized satyr, the god Pan. these satyrs in specific have more goat like features, including horns and completely animal legs.
Panes are the topic of this post, clearly.
Pan was syncretized with the roman god Faunus, another pastoral and wildlife god. The panes in this context were considered fauns, although they were likely originally separate. Roman syncretism is even more complicated than most to differ between just due to the prevalence of the adoption of greek traits despite being a separate and unique culture. thw greeks even took in Faunus, with the god Phaunos occasionally being referred to in greek sources.
Fauns generally seemed to be based more within nature and less with lust, although due to… that certain genre of statues of pan fucking a goat, we can assume that there’s still plenty of lust there.
In Rome the term faun was commonly used in statue motifs of ordinary satyrs, so it isn’t a perfect distinction.
Satyrs only began to be completely represented as panes after the fall of antiquity in art. this led to the modern perception.
my main point is, satyrs are not always panes but panes are always satyrs. modern media should have more specificity if it intends to be an ”accurate” adaptation/based media, though this is generally harmless and fine.
here’s my main sources, any additions or corrections are very welcome!

Hoo boy. it’s been a week XD my body’s been way out of wack, i’ve been constantly on the verge of tears, had a knot in my stomach, and my first ever panic attack. whoo hoo.
now, i know these are not my normal emotional responses to things. i know it’s a hormonal imbalance or something, and thank God i’m finally feeling better.
But God in His mercy used a really CRAPPY time to reinforce something; when I felt like an awful Christian who couldn’t get off my butt to help others, He made me realize that my identity in Him was too wrapped up in my deeds and my own ‘righteousness,’ in trying to do things in my own strength.
my standing in Christ is just as firm when i feel like crap. because it’s from HIM, not me. i’m in good standing just because I’m His daughter purchased by His blood. it SOUNDS simple but it wrecked me lol. so. thanks Jesus.

Ok, so a little backstory before I get to the actual story: It's not really a secret in my family about just how much of a nerd I am (especially when it comes to the LoZ series) and I'm pretty much the only one. I quite literally have one friend, who is very nerdy in the same way I am, but he doesn't live near me. The only other person in my life who was as into this stuff as me was a cousin of mine who passed a way a few years ago. She was truly the one who grabbed my hand, ran, and nourished the geek in me. So with all of this combined, I've struggled greatly with expressing geeky excitement/fixations/etc. to the extent that I used to around others comfortably.
So with all of that, I have to give major kudos to my mom. Since TotK came out, I would probably classify myself as quite the nuisance with my multiple, long, and extensive rambles about the game as I've been playing. She has never been into these things, but has just sat there and let me go off about whatever. I've lost count at this point how many times I've stopped playing to just gush about something that I did or came across in the game. She's even asking questions, urging me to keep going. This woman had probably learned way more about Zelda lore than she ever cared too.
I guess the point to all of this is that I am extremely grateful that I have someone who encourages my hobbies and interests. I know not everyone has that. It really does make a difference when someone puts in the effort when it comes to the things that make you happy. I hope that everyone can have that.
Anyway, stay nerdy my friends!!
