I think The Great Gatsby is a red herring code-wise.
BUT! If I can be a literary nerd here, the book does have big parallels to Bill.
Our main character, Jay Gatsby, is seemingly the portrait of the man that everyone wants to be. He throws lavish parties, he's seen as the talk of the town, he seems to have everything - and yet, as its revealed in the book, he spent his whole life pining after a girl he only got to be with for a short time before the war, trying to be successful enough for her. He even built his lavish mansion right across from where she lives!
Now, we also have our code's namesake - TJ Eckleburg, a billboard for an optometrist that overlooks a part of town that has basically but overrun by industriliasm and the smog and ash that comes with it.
"This is a valley of ashes—a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air. Occasionally a line of grey cars crawls along an invisible track, gives out a ghastly creak and comes to rest, and immediately the ash-grey men swarm up with leaden spades and stir up an impenetrable cloud which screens their obscure operations from your sight…"
The events that happen within the book are watched by this billboard, and while the rest of its signage has mostly faded, the eyes - surrounded by a pair of yellow spectacles - gaze down on our players.
Now, I think that Bill is both Gatsby and Eckleburg.
He came from humble, flat beginnings (like our Gatsby, who was originally named James Gatz and grew up poor and strived to become something more) and always strived for that horizon, that fleeting glimpse of freedom that he could never get. And instead of accepting his actions, instead of accepting all that he's seen (the all-seeing eyes of Eckleburg gazing down at the passage of time and the destruction of the land around him akin to Bill watching his own dimension burn by his own hand), he decides to live in a fantasy.
He keeps the notion alive that he will be back. That he is too smart, too powerful for these weak fleshy sacks who need the comfort of people. He keeps striving for something he can no longer attain.
boats borne back ceaselessly into the past and all that jazz

Random thought but I actually love If I Loved You
I used to not like it that much, for no reason in particular but it just never really stood out to me. Especially since if you listen to the soundtrack without all the talking scenes it comes right after Just For Once and. You can’t do that to me.
Anyways I think I like the acting better than the actual song. Just the way they’re moving and stuff idk.
The way they walk away from each other after each chorus, just the way they walk.
The way Steph keeps bending a bit like she’s trying to patronize Pete.
The audience cheering when Pete throws the hot chocolate cup kills me too
I think this clip is my favourite part though. The joke of Pete miming a baseball bat when he mentions football. The way Steph looks over her shoulder before she does that walk, checking to see Pete’s reaction because obviously the whole time they’re essentially just trying to get a reaction out of the other. Nothing groundbreaking, of course, I just enjoy watching it.

Me, rambling to my wife about this crackpot theory I came up with in the shower about how Les Miserables may have been an answer to The Count of Monte Cristo, or at least could be read as such: ... But then Valjean didn't personally screw Javert over like Dantes' enemies did-
My wife: Are you sure Valjean didn't screw Javert? I thought I read that on AO3 once.

npmd incorrect quotes... except they're things i've said myself. Grace: Is that a train or our lord and savior Jesus Christ? Steph: Being a bad bitch is a state of mind. Richie: It's the start of Mountain Dew, it feels so nice to drink that gamer fuel! Pete: Heads, we die. Tails, we live. Pete: Fuck, it’s heads. Ruth: As you put your spaghetti to a boil, stick your dick in some extra virgin olive oil! Pete (stand in for my brother here): You do realize you just screamed that in the middle of a supermarket checkout line, correct? Ruth: Ah, my impulsive brain strikes again. I'll just curl up and die now. Steph and Pete after the whole "LIB wants one of you to kill the other, lol!" thing: Fuck you, magic man! Any of the nerds: Do you think we could rickroll NASA? Max: If you say one more stupid thing, I'm going to rip out your vocal cords, chop them up, stir fry them, and eat them as part of my Pad Thai. Capeesh?

hmmm dunno if i necessarily have to spoiler tag this bc then you'd have to spoiler tag every post ever but i will anyway just in case
spoilers for spies are forever under the cut
if you think about it the following lines from the title song from 'nerdy prudes must die' summarise owen's motivations post-banana slip pretty well
'you think i seek revenge
i could give two shits that you buried and left me
defiled my body
you pushed me off the edge
i'm on a new crusade
the world is just too well-behaved
it needs to be saved
and you're too weak to be enslaved'
also ig the whole 'coming back from the dead' thing is similar too to the whole situation

During the summoning, I noticed that Wiggly was wearing a ring. And while this could normally be just nothing I couldn’t get it out of my head until I remembered family rings/signet rings.
Tumblr media
We can’t properly see what the ring looks like, but my guess is that it is a signet ring, which is normally worn by people of influence to sign letters and legal documents.
Traditionally they were worn on the non-dominant hand on a person pinky, but that’s not important, the fact is that normally the head of a family or business would be the one wearing the signet ring, as they would be the one in charge of finalising deals and documents.
See what I’m getting at?
I just find this really cool but idk if it was intentional or not!!

A Random NPMD Thought
Alright, so this might sound kinda crazy, but I feel that there is some overlap between the stories of Nerdy Prudes Must Die and Mystery Skulls Animated. Like, think about it:
Both stories are kicked off by someone falling to their death and coming back as a vengeful spirit that still holds on to their feelings for another one of the main characters.
Both are respectively throwbacks to classic horror and mystery works, while also playing with their core tropes and character archetypes.
Both involve mysterious, unexplained supernatural beings that observe and guide parts of the plot while also serving as their stories respective overarching antagonist(s).
Both have music as a focal part of their stories which also serves to move the plot forward.
In short, this is just a really random conclusion that came to me one day that I felt like sharing and seeing what other people thought of this. Also, someone really needs to draw the main cast of NPMD in the MSA style.

When are we getting a One Piece film for Law? An adaption of Law's novel would be nice! Then we could get the novel printed in English? Please? We need more Heart Pirates content!

I still love the opening to Black Widow so much. It's so powerful and it does such a good job of conveying the trauma Natasha endured while she was exploited into being a child soldier. It's heartbreaking, and the use of the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" cover was a fucking brilliant commentary on the MCU fandom at large and of modern day parenting--
youtube
There are worse things than your kids seeing a sex scene or a man in a dress or seeing fake bloodshed in a superhero movie. That is what it is saying. It's hauntingly beautiful and brutally honest, and that's why I just laugh whenever some movie snob says Marvel movies have no point.
Because Marvel movies do have a point -- you're just too busy being pretentious to pick up on it.

MOST POPULAR NERDY PRUDES MUST DIE SONGS
While we wait for the soundtrack to arrive on Spotify/Bandcamp, etc, we can still see the listening stats for those uploaded on Youtube, specifically the Original Cast Recordings (OCR) and the Live Recordings (Live).
As a whole, the OCR playlist is more popular, with a median of 256k views per song and 3.4k likes, but those high views come with a like:view ratio of .006.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Live playlist is visited more for one off songs, and likely not listened to all the way through. It has a median of 26k views, 500 likes, but a like:view ration of 0.018 (3x higher than the OCR).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously we can see some clear winners here: Nerdy Prudes Must Die, The Summoning, Dirty Dudes Must Die, Hatchet Town, as well as High School is Killing Me and Literal Monster, which have the added benefit of being the first songs in the show. Hatchet Town is an interesting case by having medium-low views & likes, but a high like:view ratio—not many listen, but those who do? They love it (or at the very least are pay apt attention).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If we want to combine all these factors, we get something like this, which can get a good overview, but is chaotic to look and and doesn't convey the nuances of each song across the categories.
So let's instead look at the rank of the songs! Because these graphs are very fun but take hours to make.
Tumblr media
Here, we can see their movements a little clearer.
-----
Anyway, that's it from me! Nerdy Prudes Must Die's most popular song is Nerdy Prudes Must Die (very fitting).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although it is very funny to me that it's mostly just the 3rd act of the song that is listened to

what's my new hyperfixation?
a 2 hr show with a couple of freaky kids as our mcs. angela giarratana plays the character who is sheltered, normal, and absolutely not a freak but ends up beaten up, traumatized, and the most unhinged one in the end. most of the freaky kids end up dying sad and gory deaths that you shouldn't think about the implications for too long before freaking out. it's set in a small town in a northern state not many pay attention to. there's more implications of the town being wiped out by the end that you shouldn't think of.
welp, guess i got a type!
