Hi, I don't know much about catholics outside the US. What do you mean when you say who the next pope will affect the politics of your country even when you're not Catholic yourself?

Okay, so! I'm from the Philippines, the only majority Catholic country in Asia. We have a huge population of Muslims and Buddhists (mainly among the Filipino-Chinese community), but because of our history, Catholics basically call the shots. Two of our biggest universities are a Jesuit and Dominican seminary. The Philippines is the only country in the world with no legal divorce, mostly because Catholics believe it violates the sacrament of marriage. Stable communities that are not religious or religious-leaning in nature are few and far between — and almost entirely absent in more rural areas.

Pope Francis not condemning the gays was felt here. There's still rampant homophobia, but at least visibly queer people weren't being kicked out of their communities. Right now, an anti-discrimination bill is still being debated in our congress (the SOGIE bill) even after many, many years because of pushback from conservative Christians. Thus, unlike in other countries, there is no law protecting Filipino queer people from discrimination.

If the next pope doubles down on Catholic values meaning anti-queer and pro "traditional marriage," that bill would likely be dead in the water and Filipino gay people will be forced back into the closet or else risk being ostracized. This is the reality even for those who don't follow the religion or go to church, simply because the Philippines itself is very much culturally Catholic.
