I basically discovered that anti-Percabeth people exist ! I didn't even know it was possible to hate this couple ! Not to mention hating Annabeth's character ?! And I am deeply shocked ?! Apparently this relationship is unhealthy and toxic ?! Annabeth would be abusive ?!
Tumblr media
Why ?! Because of the nickname she gives to Percy ?! The affectionate little blows she gives him from time to time ?! Because yes, at what point did you consider that to be really hitting someone ?! The fact that Annabeth, a literal teenager, dared to be jealous of Rachel seeing that she was close to Percy who Annabeth had romantic feelings for ?! The Faith or she basically kicked him to the ground after believing that he had willfully ignored her and been gone for months ?! I mean... Yes, this gesture was not glorious and or good, especially since we know that Percy was Hera's prisoner, but not Annabeth at that time, who has, I remind it, a serious problem with fear of abandonment. And they are half-gods who learn the art of war and fighting as soon as they discover their identity ! It's not out of place that when they get angry they are capable of being physical ! So... WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK ?!
Tumblr media
I have nothing against shipping Percy with other characters such as Nico or Rachel (they are very cool by the way). But claiming that Annabeth and Percabeth are super toxic is ridiculous...
Tumblr media
Besides, this post explains very well why seeing Annabeth and her relationship with Percy as toxic is stupid :
Say bullshit like Annabeth and Percabeth are toxic, is of the same level as saying that Annabeth is using Percy as a rebound for losing Luke. It's so dumb.

"Percy threw his arms around her. They kissed and for a moment nothing else mattered. An asteroid could have hit the planet and wiped out all life, and Annabeth wouldn't have cared."

OK so I know that I’ve shit on both adaptations of the PJO books (cry about it) but I will tell you this… I do it out of love for the series!
This book series literally saved my life. I’m not joking at all. (TW: self-harm mentioned) I promised my therapist that instead of ending my life early… I would read just one more chapter of Percy Jackson. No joke. I still do it to this day.
Excuse me for being extremely passionate about this series so much that I can take the “Rick Riordan hype-train”™️ blinders off and ultimately critique it.
I saw that the show was renewed for a second season. I won’t be watching it. Riordan promised a book accurate adaptation of the series and he ultimately lied to the fanbase. The man was so adamant about it being different from the movies that he forgot what was actually supposed to go on screen.
Every time I think of those books, I think of my happy place, my home.
I tuned into the first episode in a bright orange camp half blood shirt, blue cookies and pizza, (as Percy would) and my room completely decked out in blue lights. I felt safe. I felt like I was going to the one place I felt understood. I had hope for it let me make that clear. I didn’t want to hate it.
I walked away from the first episode, fairly excited about what was to come. I was happy. I re-watched it multiple times. It felt really faithful. I found myself every week after that feeling like I was being killed inside.
I will forever love the books. Every time I travel I bring at least one of the original five with me everywhere I go. I am a passionate fan. I have a Greek mythology tattoo sleeve and Riptide resides all the way down my arm.
Once again, I reiterate, that the Percy Jackson books saved my life and continue to do so. I will always thank Riordan for writing the originals.
There’s my story and my one original post a month

Idk but the idea that Percy was scared of learning to swim itches something in my brain.
Like there's so much emphasis on who a camper's godly parent is, what their demigod talents are, pleasing their godly parents, like their godliness is always emphasized, their closeness to divinity is a very big literary theme. And it's beautiful, amazing writing but we tend to forget that being a demigod means that theyre part human too. They are mortal, they have fears, flaws, etc. and here we see a very human Percy terrified of the water when he is meant to be the water. He's the son of the god of the sea but he is also a little boy, the son of a human woman.
And then, the rest of the series is Percy learning how to cope with his divinity or his proximity to. Which is a beautiful parallel to how Annabeth is learning to be human, to let go of her perfectionism and just be human, just be a young girl. (Which is a whole other thing I could write about)
I think we forget that as much as Percy is the son of a god and is a strong, sassy, amazing character, he is also a human and a human child at that.

Ω PJO DEMIGOD HEADCANONS: 🍀 TYCHE: Goddess of Fortune and Luck 🎰
Author's note: Hello everyone! In lieu of posting the major gods demigod headcanons, here is the minor gods version! As usual these headcanons will contain what it's like being claimed and what it's like for the respective god and cabin, followed by a small story between you, the reader, and the respective demigod of that god. Thank you for reading and please like and reblog! [PJO MINOR GODS DEMIGOD HEADCANONS MASTERLIST] Disclaimer: To new fans or strictly TV watchers of the PJO series, future spoilers for the entire PJO series books will be referenced. Read at your own risk.
When you get claimed, you literally feel like you won the lottery. Which in this case is being claimed by Tyche. Four leaf clovers begin to grow underneath your feet, there is an acorn in your pocket, there are hummingbirds and cardinals flying around you.
“May the odds be in your favour”, these words are either a blessing or words of dread when a child of Tyche says it to someone.
You have at least a lucky item. Every child of Tyche has a lucky item that ranges from conventional symbols of luck or your personal item.
There’s word that items belonging to a child of Tyche are lucky but someone tried to take one without them knowing, and it only brought them really, really bad luck. By the time people figured it out, and they were told to give it back lest the bad luck actually kills them. All tokens belonging to children of Tyche are only lucky if consensually and explicitly given.
On the other hand, the Aphrodite cabin and a few other romantics/literary folks out there do find it absolutely endearing at the story how one time, a daughter of Tyche took a lock of her own hair and gave it to a guy who was about to enter a competition, and won in her favour. It was like something straight out of a story about a medieval lady and her knight.
Fortune favours the bold. The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward. You’ll get the luck and the reward, but at what cost? Everyone around you’ll balance you out and get all your bad luck.
I wouldn’t say the Nemesis cabin are your parallels nor are they your enemy or ally. Their mother’s domain is a disruptor of Fortune, bad and good, so Tyche has a connection with Nemesis. How this applies to you will depend, but let’s just say it’s not uncommon to have a child of Nemesis having a presence in your life. They’ll balance out the Luck basically. Which is why the Nemesis cabin is paired with the Tyche Cabin in Capture the Flag; to keep things fair for the other team.
When Palamedes offered the first set of dice that he supposedly invented, and given Tyche deals with chance, it’s not uncommon for you to own a set of dice. It can be a traditional set of dice, but as time goes on, it’s not surprising when children of Tyche start carrying around DnD dice. There is much debate if a child of Tyche is only allowed to carry one D20 ever.
Never play Poker or bet against a child of Tyche. Even if you do play, DON’T BET. It’s a general warning to never bet because it’s not healthy and can be very risky, but against a child of Tyche? Prepared to lose in ways you didn’t know you could even lose.
Children of Tyche often have skirmishes with children of Nike. Who will win? Absolute Luck VS Overwhelming Victory? This also brings in the fact that the Tyche Cabin and the Nike Cabin are to never ever be put on the same team. In the early days post-Titan war, all games and especially Capture of the Flag have been won by them in the most absurd, improbable way ever. Good thing at that coincidence, not only Artemis and Mr. D were watching, but also Hestia during that time because no one expected to see a flying catapult of burning artillery heading straight for the opposing team that was basically like mini meteors. One of said large shrapnels hit the lava wall, which caused a lava spill that headed for the opposing team, and also by extension, also the home team. Percy Jackson had to kick into overdrive using all his power to summon the water to absorb the impact and take out all the fire. The Demeter kids, Dryads and Satyrs were also not very happy, which made Mr. D unhappy. The Apollo cabin is still re-stocking their supplies from the non-lethal casualties. The Athena and Hephaestus cabins are still doing repairs and renovations. Good thing the Tyche children have a lot of money; probably for these reasons.
When you get claimed, you can hear something like the sound of winning the lottery. There are dings, and ringings, while birds are flying around you and four leaf clovers are sprouting underneath your feet. You then saw a girl with fierce almond eyes look at you as she made her way over to you.
“Hi! You must be the new child of Tyche!” she said while approaching you.
“Um, yeah I am! And you are…?” you asked a bit hesitantly.
“I’m Chiara Benvenuti, daughter of Tyche and cabin leader of the Tyche cabin! Nice to meet you!”
You introduced yourself to her as she looked around a bit suspiciously before guiding you away towards a direction, leaning close to you as if to whisper something. You were confused what she was doing before she spoke,
“Do you have a lucky item?” she asked quietly.
You stared at her for a moment before I clicked. “Oh! Oh yeah, yeah I have it. Wait, do all children of Tyche have one?”
Chiara nodded, shaking her charm bracelet. “Yeah, every child of Tyche has a lucky item or an item significant to them that it acts as if it’s a lucky item to others. As cabin leader, I need to tell you to keep a good eye on it or keep it out of other’s hands.”
“Wait why?” you asked as you were approaching the Hermes cabin.
“Back during the early days, when everyone was still adjusting to the minor gods’ demigods, someone once took a child of Tyche’s item, which turned out to be their lucky item. Instead of bringing them luck, it brought incredible misfortune that just got worse and worse and started to affect everyone else. Ever since then, all lucky items belonging a child of Tyche are kept close.”
“Oh…wow” you said as you began to sweat incredibly. “Then uh, I better hurry back to the Hermes cabin then-” you laughed nervously.
“Go, go! I’ll wait for you!” said Chiara, but was laughing though.
You rushed over to the Hermes cabin, some of the native cabin members greeting you and asking you what the hurry was about. Then when you said you were claimed as a child of Tyche and went to get your lucky item, everyone immediately paled and the cabin was in chaos as they were all patting themselves down and were dumping your stuff onto your bed, hands raised up in mercy.
You just stared at them all, realising that the children of Hermes had stolen some of your stuff without your knowledge and you only knew because they were relieving themselves of their stolen work like it was acid because they knew about the children of Tyche incident, that your cabin leader just told you about. You looked at your missing stuff, your bag that actually had your lucky item, before looking at them and slowly said, “Where’s the rest of them?”
Chaos further exploded as the children of Hermes started yelling at the others to relinquish their spoils while some others ran out of the cabin to get the other children of Hermes outside to be extra sure. Bit by bit some of your other stuff came back, but they were very minor things like a chocolate bar or something. Still-
The cabin was still in chaos and you couldn’t help feeling a bit satisfied and giddy at the sight before you. You saw another camper and one you recognized as Damien White, the cabin leader of Nemesis, come in, confused as they carefully navigate between the crowds, just barely missing two campers going at each other when one realised they had stolen the other’s stuff. The two made their way closer to you and you recognized the other camper as your bunk-mate and growing friend, as you both arrived at around the same time.
“What’s going on?” they asked as Damien didn’t seem fazed.
“Oh, I got claimed as a child of Tyche just now and when they found out, they started to giving back my stuff and I may have eluded that some of my other stuff is missing-”
Damien let out a cackle and nodded, as the other camper seemed confused. “Nice” before he gestured to the other camper, “Is this your stuff?” when they nodded, he grabbed it and made a move to leave, “I’ll take your stuff back to the cabin first. Take your time saying goodbye”
You looked at the other camper as Damien walked back into the chaos and out the door. “Wait, did you just get claimed too?” you gaped in surprise.
“Ah yeah, just got claimed by Nemesis” they replied.
“Wow, what are the odds!” you said before the two of you begun to share your experiences with your claim. Eventually with your belongings all accounted for, you bid goodbye to the Nemesis child, promising to catch up later, before bidding the Hermes cabin. You pretended you didn’t see the sigh of relief from them as you giggled. You only made a few steps forward, seeing Chiara first and you went to tell her you were done till you saw her arguing with Damien White. The two were heated as people were watching them.
You went to see what was going on but Damien and Chiara were yelling and arguing with each other so fast, their foreheads practically touching as they were in each other’s face. You stood behind with your stuff, fiddling with it, unsure what to do but at the same time you weren’t that keen in getting whatever that mess was. With the possible thought of a cabin war on the horizon, you steeled your nerves to get in between them until you saw a guy with brown hair and blue eyes touch your shoulder stopping you.
In shock you turned to him as he gave you a sun-filled smile, and your nerves turned hot, before he gave you a wink. “Don’t worry, I got this” he reassured before sauntering over with a finely sung hum before clapping to gather their attention with the beat. “Alright you two lovebirds, that’s enough~”
“Who are you calling lovebirds?!” Damien and Chiara yelled and turned their heads towards the boy in perfect synchronization. Their temper immediately peaked and dropped as they blinked and looked at the boy in surprise. “Wait, Lester?”
“Hi! How are my two favourite child of Nemesis and Tyche doing?” greeted ‘Lester’ chirpily.
“What are you doing here?” asked Damien.
“Well, I was here to visit and lo and behold, then I find out you two are arguing with each other as usual. While not an uncommon scene, you two better stop before you worry your new siblings into thinking they have to participate in a cabin war” said Lester with an amused grin. The two cabin leaders blinked in realizaiton before their eyes turned to their respective siblings.
The new child of Nemesis walked over as Damien and Chiara were off being a bit embarrassed as Lester winked at you. “Don’t worry about them. They do this all the time but they hardly hate each other as you might think” he said with a teasing tone, before he looked at the two of you. “But really, the chances of a child of Nemesis and child of Tyche being claimed on the same day and being so close to each other…I have a feeling the two of you could be a great pair.”
“Wait, why?” you asked confused.
“Nemesis is a disruptor of fortune, bad and good, and Tyche is connected with Nemesis because of it. As you can see,” he gestured to your cabin leaders, “This also extends to their children.”
“Wait, how do you know this for sure? Who are you?”
“Ah, I forgot my manners. “My name is Lester Papadopoulous, nice to meet you.”

Batfam reading habits ( part 1):
duke: definitely dog ears pages, also uses any item he can find as a bookmark, memorized what page number he left on at times if there is no bookmark or is too much in a rush to bookmark. Tends to like to read on the hard floor with a blanket bunched up underneath and will stay in one position for hours. Also genuinely believe duke has adhd and will often opt for audiobooks when he has bad brain days and sometimes reading books can feel impossible and make him nauseous. In addition, when he finds a book he loves he cannot put it down and will talk about it for weeks and create theories if possible. He also tends to constantly annotate his books and will have a habit of using quotes from the book in everyday vocabulary and just LOVES watching other people pick apart and analysis his favorite books online.
preferred book choice for duke: not necessarily picky he’ll read almost everything ranging from classics to cheesy romance; HOWEVER, he’s more selective when it comes to sci-fi as in he’s not terrible big on the ones that take place in space. DUNE definitely one of his all time favorites though. Additionally, thrillers and mind games are up there in his favorite genres he finds them so exciting and they suck him in.
damian: he has a specialized bookmark that he was gifted from bruce and literally will never pass up any opportunity to use it. At times he is also notorious for memorizing book page numbers if he doesn’t have his bookmark on hand and absolutely despises dog-earring pages he gets upset at duke and tim over it because they’re dog-ear contenders. He literally reads in dead silence or he’ll listen to classical but only pieces in a minor key. He tends to love reading with Titus on his lap or next to him on his bed. He also has a designated spot next to the fire place and often falls asleep there reading after patrol is finished for the night. Once he finds a book he loves he will constantly pick words to use in his everyday vocabulary and tends to talk nonstop about the book only with certain people ( e.g jason, bruce, dick, duke, and maya). He constantly annotates his books as well same as duke and uses tabs for his favorite sections. He also isn’t terribly big on audiobooks and loathes sitting through them bc he could just read it himself yknow.
preferred book choice for damian: god he loves horror, classics ( especially gothic ones), anything and everything greek tragedies, mystery, and he has a soft spot for historical fiction romance. He also is a giant PJO fan and was super into reading the series of unfortunate events for a while. Shoujo manga is also a go-to.
steph:
well she oh my god collects audiobooks like crazy because sitting and reading a physical copy is difficult for her. Often times whenever she does choose to read a physical copy she’ll get carsick and often will feel nauseous and throw up so she finds it easier to read upside down from her bed with the blood rushing to her head. Forgets to annotate but when she does she will go crazy with it, writing constant comments in the margins. She also will use anything as a bookmark and even used flattened take out box once for one. Also one of her preferred reading spots is in cass’s room or with barbara. She likes reading under the table in the manor and tends to switch positions a lot when reading and gets up frequently for snack breaks in between. Once she gets hooked into a book steph has a tendency to block people out and not hear when they’re calling her. She’ll also rattle on and on about the book or it turns in her head like a microwave. She doesn’t mind analyzing the characters but god she has strong opinions about various literature and even literary devices it’s unreal and talks constantly about them with Jason and damian. She has to read with noise or else.
preferred books choice for steph: loves horror, historical fiction specifically the romantic ones, cheesy romance, she also loves greek tragedies with a female mc, wlw, she cannot really stand sci-fi I feel like that’s definitely her least favorite genre as well as nonfiction atleast some of them. Also poetry is a favorite specifically those that make her feel airy and light. She reads them a lot depending on her mood.
cass:
she’ll often switch from audiobooks to physical copies but she also tends to LOVE e-books. She has a bookmark that was gifted to her by both bruce and steph but most of the time she will just lay the book flat out whenever she pauses her reading time. She sometimes will begin her workouts by listening to oscar wilde poetry or even poe bc she tends to really like gothic poetry. She also listens to audiobooks to help her sleep at night since it’s relaxing and comforting but she’s super picky about the person reading. She finds it surprisingly comfortable to lay on not only the hard wood floor in the manor similar to duke, but she also will read a lot on the bathroom floor with her favorite blanket ( it’s a edward scissor hands themed one with an added hood that has cat ears). Once she finds a book she loves there’s just no putting it down she has to read it everywhere and anywhere. She’s not terribly big on annotating heavily but she definitely loves highlighting her favorite quotes and makes a miniature word wall full of the words she finds endearing in her room. Can read without music but loves listening to gothic rock to help her get into the mood of things.
preferred genre for cass: gothic literature/ poetry, she’s such a big tolkien fan, loves mystery especially sherlock holmes super into him and can talk nonstop about it with steph and babs and they love listening her talk about it. Fantasy is also a preferred genre for her and when she first read jane eyre she stayed up for days trying to finish and tends not to budge.
tim:
this man loves him an audiobook that’s for sure and will always opt for one. He also has a kindle but occasionally he’ll have a physical copy which he loves marking up so heavily. ALSO he dog ears pages like crazy which pisses off Jason. Tim also just tends to ruin his books as in he’ll break the spine open and continue reading books multiple times until they fall apart. The flipside to this is that he tends to forget that a certain book exists after getting so far into them regardless if they’re an e-book or a physical copy. He also will constantly add more and more books to his TBR list and read like 4 books at once which is something jason and duke do consistently ( NOTE: not so much dick because he needs to focus on one book at a time and sometimes he’ll read 2 at the same time). He prefers parallel play when reading so he’ll invite bernard to come do his own thing while he reads. His designated reading spot is the kitchen counter and the batcave spinning chair. The amount of times alfred, bruce, or dick has found him just passed out while reading in the bat computer chair is absence. Once he finds a book he loves there’s no putting it down, he’ll constantly talk about it all the time make references to the book in everyday conversation and even create theories and make spreadsheets depending on the book. Also cannot read without music and often listens to 80s rock music.
preferred genre for tim: god he loves thriller and mystery one of his all time favorites as well as fantasy. Super big on LOTR ( bonds with cass about it), the witcher, and just any fantasy series he’s not picky at all. he has super strong opinions on fantasy as a genre and especially when it comes to the magic systems. He has a giant soft spot for oscar wilde and enjoys reading russian literature, comics, and french literature.
dick:
LOVES LOVES audiobook listening for patrols and long ones especially moby dick hes read that countless times and probably one of the first books he ever read at the manor besides Robin Hood. Also tends to prefer romantic and atmospheric poetry when trying to fall asleep whenever he does listen to one for napping purposes it lulls him straight to sleep. He’s also not really one for reading e-books since it gives him a massive headache so he tend to opt for physical copies. This seems incredibly ironic considering his job as a vigilante does require him to look at screens most of the time but yes. He shifts around a lot when reading because he cant really find a comfortable spot and just stay there so he’ll move from chair to chair whilst holding the same book which drives Alfred insane as well as kory whenever they’re at home together. His preferred reading spot definitely varies as sometimes he’ll have weeks where he’s super into reading solely in a chair and changing positions in the same chair. While other weeks it’s him being super absorbed with reading on the kitchen counter. He also a stretcher when reading and will put his leg above he’s head at times. He’s definitely a crier when reading romance and even certain quotes just kinda bring him to tears easily. Once he gets into a book he really enjoys there’s just no getting through he’ll just not register the other person calling him and can’t stop thinking about it. Will constantly talk about the book, make references during fights, and just annotates like crazy.
preferred genres for dick: oh he’s a lover of all things heroic, he loves books with a heroic main character in most fashions. He’s a giant fan of six of crows for sure as well and fantasy is a favorite. Will never pass up a thrilling classic and mysteries are also an enjoyable favorite. He also has a very soft spot for romance and tends to read romantic short stories whenever he’s taking a break from reading a larger work.
bruce:
hes a physical copy kind of guy 100% which is why it took him such a weird time to get adjusted to reading e-books but they just give him a headache unless he’s wearing his glasses. I also honestly have a headcannon that bruce has an astigmatism so at times reading can make him nauseous without wearing them regardless if he’s in a moving car or not. When he was younger he read so much and devoured books which a lot of his recs came from both his dad and alfred later along the line. tim highly encouraged him to make a goodreads account since he mainly would keep his reading list in a google doc or in his notebook for safe keeping. His preferred reading spot also varies between his bedroom, the wayne family library, and the couch next to the fireplace as that was his designated story time place when he was a young lad. He doesn’t really move terribly much when reading, but he tends to constantly run his hand through his hair and keep it above his head while the other turns pages. Additionally, he’s also super picky about the physical kind of book which is also a habit that damian has as well. It’s a sensory thing that certain books need to be hard cover while others might not be as such. He has to read in dead silence with noise cancelling headphones and a cozy quilt made via the whole family. ALSO he loves reading with a warm drink as his preferred one is coffee or earl grey. Once he gets super into a book he won’t necessarily speak about in excess; however, he’ll constantly recommend the book to everyone but he most definitely has a soft spot about reading certain sections of the book to clark. He also just writes about his thoughts concerning the book constantly in his journal.
preferred genre for bruce: CLASSICS. He also enjoys psychological horror specifically.
jason: ( I had to leave him last otherwise it would’ve been ungodly long bc he is my favorite unfortunately.) ANYWAYS, he’s 100% a physical copy kind of guy; however, he loves audiobooks whenever his brain isn’t cooperating ( he also has adhd in my head). In this case, he tends to listen a lot to audiobooks during patrol and during family meetings whenever what is being said is unbearable so it helps a bit more with focusing. Just like Tim he has a major tendency for reading books multiple times until they fall apart and bends the spine frequently. He also loves annotating and will get so absorbed into it that he forgets to read the rest of the book especially if he’s just reading it for the first time. He has to wear glasses while reading otherwise headache does ensue and he’ll have to take a break and break up reading into chunks. ALSO has a goodreads account and has way too many books on his TBR. Additionally, when reading he tends to have two pillows one for his back just in case and just one he keeps underneath for his chest. Once he finds a book he loves there’s no stopping him talking about it. He has super strong opinions about literature especially when it comes to book to movie adaptations and frequently shares those opinions with duke, dick, steph, and damian since they all have a small bookclub together. He also will make theories constantly and frequently write reviews on his favorite books on goodreads as well as a pinboard dedicated to character analysis. In addition, also quotes a lot when he finds a new book he loves. He devoured books as a kid and constantly would hole up in the manor library, check out numerous books at the library, and read a lot under the table. ALSO him and Alfred often have a designated Wednesday where they just talk about books and share tea with each other and it’s the most heartfelt moment. His preferred reading spot also varies from his bedroom, roy’s room, the wayne manor library, and the carpet with his favorite hoodie.
preferred genre for jason: CLASSICS. Also he was a giant PJO kid and was deeply infatuated with maximum ride books as well. He has a giant spot for Greek tragedies, shakespeare, and a deep lover of poetry and often shares edgar allen poe recs with cass since they bond over poetry. He also really likes modern romance books which he tends to compare classic romantic literature and more recent. Also an avid fan of kafka and reads a lot of russian literature. vampire novels are also a guilty pleasure cannot resist as well as gothic literature an all time favorite.
ADDITIONAL STUFF:
yeah I think jason definitely argues with people over literature super frequently and it gets heated in all honesty. Also I hc that everyone in the batfam has either adhd or autism and you can’t change my mind about it 100%.

i recently (mostly) reread pjo/hoo and my feelings are complicated because hoo is lowkey just bad. nico is so dear to me but i can’t help being frustrated with how every single character was handled in hoo. especially nico even though he objectively got more development than half the seven. so many loose ends and (imo) unecessary romance subplots and strangely ooc moments i want to pretend it isn’t canon but that solution pisses me off because the hoo characters really are compelling. then earlier today when i was thinking about where i could find HOO Literary Criticism in 2022 i realized house of hades came out 9 years ago and i felt my brain break because i truly remember it like it was yesterday (i don’t know if this feeling resonates) anyway i think my 12 year old self was right and this series should have been wrapped up over several more books and gone darker. <- my dissertation sorry this is out of the blue id love to hear ur thoughts
yeah hoo is sort of like supernatural to me where it's full of potential and a couple stand out moments but ultimately wastes all of it so i just have to sit here with the version of it that exists in my head for the rest of my life because i can't just let the potential go.. like yes the romance WAS unnecessary and boring yes all of the characters ARE underwritten and inconsistent yes i AM going to reread it just to see nico speak a man to death

I joined fandoms in my 30s, y'know? I'm part of this awkward generation which belongs to the 2000s but didn't get internet and social media young enough to be part of the group culture. When I was hungry for Young Adult books, I had the hardest time finding the good stuff! My friends didn't read like I did. The tiny school library didn't come with instructions or suggestions. Sad!
I loved and re-read HP over and over as a kid! Then in my 30s I decided, y'know what? Do-over! I'll read all the YA books, new and old. Indie and popular. I didn't have the internet or a or a fandom back then, but I have resources to feed my passion now!
The PJO fandom. Percy Jackson. Rick Riordan. The Riordanverse. The urban fantasy, action-comedy, mythology-inspired world is the ultimate fandom! Disclaimer: I don't idolize authors or idealize their content. I don't have to love it all to feel I belong as a fan of literary art!
Writing is an art and that art has power over society, for better or worse. So, in a world that objectifies people and creates systems that discriminate, I want to read fictional characters who subvert the norm. Magnus Chase, Alex Fierro, Blitzen and Hearthstone, And the many neurodivergent demigods of the PJO series represent a strength and hope I never felt in older children's books. (Maybe Roald Dahl?)
The world is unfair. This fandom can be a platform to stand on to hope for better! A future is coming where books don't normalize sexism, ableism, or whiteness, and call it a "trope".
Books change lives, fandoms create worlds.
Magnus Chase And The Gods Of Asgard created a possibility in my mind. The fandom is a platform that says: yes, this is fiction, and also it's real. Because the readers say so.
This is why today I changed my blog to frenz of frey. This fandom gives me hope that through the anxiety, depression, chronic health issues, injustice, identity crises, etc. I have a platform that feels like home. Thank you, Riordanverse.

Rant about Heroes of Olympus because as a sequel series to Percy Jackson it pains me pt. 1
So I just reread the PJO (one of my all time favorite series) and HoO series and I’m just struck by how unfulfilled I feel after finally finishing BoO for the first time…
I didn’t read it when I was younger because it came out just as I got really busy in school and was growing out of my “reading phase” and before I knew I had ADHD/attention struggles
I know I’m older and they’re aimed at young audiences and a bit outdated in general now but the original Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is still amazing. No contest. It may have plot holes, it may be lacking in some areas like representation, but everything has flaws and all of those are just so easy to get over with such heartwarming characters and carefully crafted quests. Not to mention the high stakes and actually pretty realistic struggles??? I’m probably biased, but I just really love them and am not above fighting others if they put it down
But even after realizing both series are kids books, the plot valleys (not just pothole level inconsistencies), OOC moments, anticlimactic ending, general lack of dynamic characters and lasting themes, and lacking world building all prove HoO to be underwhelming compared to PJO. Like it’s not bad, but it’s not close to perfect either. It’s even hard to argue how most of the events and characters in HoO add and further the stories of PJO, let alone why to consider all of it as sacred canon. Especially by the end of BoO, the lackluster vibe overall was really disheartening
They aren’t bad books. I just don’t think they lived up to the heart of PJO. I didn’t feel like I was reading more about characters I love or learning about great new characters and settings or invested in why this battle against Gaia will be the greatest of all time. Instead, I my brain was caught trying to convince myself why all of that was true and I was blatantly put off by some of the story directions, which made me feel incredibly sad
Again, it’s a fun read. Not considering any sort of literary analysis or strong personal opinion and taking into account the intended audience, it meets expectations. I just feel like the original series did so much more than be average and I’m just grasping at straws here because HoO had potential to do the same
Anyway, here are some of my strongest complaints with brief explanation and in no particular order:
- where were the old characters??? Grover?? WHERE WAS GROVER??????
- Percy was very underplayed in BoO for no reason; even if you consider his time in Tartarus, he was very weak compared to SoN and it wasn’t really explained, which felt lazy. They should’ve let him rest if he wasn’t up to fighting
- mental health issues were brought up but skirted by (Nico’s coming out was awful, Percy’s suicidal thoughts weren’t really addressed seriously (that’s a whole nother post), Hazel’s literally having died once)
- Too. Much. Romance. Why did everyone need to be a couple?????
- same structure as PJO, but without any reinvention (TLT and TLH had almost the same beginning)
- povs past SoN had weird distribution; I don’t think it made sense HoH had all seven povs but the final book, BoO, didn’t
- what made Jason, Piper, and Leo more special than any of the other seven? The explanation that they began everything felt lazy and discredited Frank and Hazel….
- Reyna and Nico and even Coach Hedge held a lot of importance in the plot and it felt weird since they weren’t even part of the seven. Distribution of responsibility and the idea of seven great heroes saving stuff (even if it was ironic) was downplayed
- the seven never really felt like a team or had a moment where it seemed like all of them were vital to make things work. The splitting up into smaller groups all the time definitely worsened this
- why was New Rome a whole mini country when CHB is a literal camp… the world building was quite slapdash and felt unreastic
- no developed Roman side characters really; wish Dakota, Lou Ellen, and others had more importance and interest
- Percy came back to NYC (to CHB) and no one said anything? No Sally-Percy reunion? No Grover-Percy reunion? No campers cheering for Percy to be back?
- last minute Solangelo; they should’ve had some sort of interest to sudden love/slow burn/opposites attract relationship with proper time to develop
- issue of Greeks vs. Roman felt sort of weak and their sudden cohesion at the end felt too forced (how is one statue gonna fix eeeeeeverything)
- final battle was awful. No words. Giants easily killed, Greeks and Romans united in a minute, Gaia contained in a little storm immediately after waking and killed like no biggie
- minimal lasting damage or deaths (Leo’s death…. Don’t even get me started)
- BoO and later books ruined Leo’s character and made him seem selfish, unaware, and rude
- Annabeth and Percy being captured immediately by the giant princess in BoO; you think they escaped Tartarus for the ending to be THAT
- Frank’s whole situation; firewood and the whole idea of life being fragile felt pretty useless by the end when nothing could touch him
- weak usage of prophecy — I feel like the oracle being dead at the end was a sign for everyone to live without forced guidance, which was a big deal in PJO, but the point wasn’t really made and it felt like he just didn’t want to come up with more. Also, it felt like lines were added randomly to the prophecy of seven but we never hear everything together??? The prophecy felt cheap and forced with how everything played out
- no issues with Percy and Annabeth going to New Rome for college, but they’d be that quick to abandon their home in NYC? I get the trauma associated with it, but there was nothing that made it seem right for them to think the trauma was enough to leave everything… lowkey wanted Annabeth to go to Columbia or Barnard or NYU and be fixing up CHB to house adults or have a veteran demigod network
- cutting off character development and interactions. A lot of the characters were used to further others (Jason furthering Nico’s in BoO) or never even talked to each other (Percy and Piper). There wasn’t much growth in the last couple books even though it was very clear in the beginning ones (Frank is an obvious example) and more importantly, there was a supreme lack of resolution in their stories. Especially Percy and Annabeth, who went to hell and back, we never feel like they suffered for a reason or needed to be the ones to suffer or the suffering changed them for better or worse or any other real indication I should accept the ending
- no backlash on the gods. At all. Percy, like many others throughout PJO and HoO, is struggling to respect the gods, let alone continue being used by them. And in HoO, the gods are USELESS. They do literally n.o.t.h.i.n.g. They have one fight scene and when we have Jason’s equivalent to the asking for childcare scene of TLO, Zeus responds and his backbone breaks. The only consequence was Apollo being demoted but that honestly felt like a marketing scheme knowing ToA
- lots more but I’ll stop myself here
(Btw I did not read it because of the show lol though I am glad I did so I’m ready for it)

😭 stop, you saying you’re going to show my annabeth’s mobile post to the kids you babysit made me incredibly emotional, something something the staying power of children’s literature and generations of fandom
so thank you for that <3
one thing about me is i will talk about pjo. and being a person who babysits kids regularly, i have such the perfect opportunity to not only share my love for the series, but also to kindle a certain amount of ... idk hobby-esque literary analysis? there's a certain mindset that i think proliferates in fans and fandoms, which is one of wanting to know more and explore all the different facets of a piece of media, and i think being able to develop an attitude like this fosters some really valuable traits: discernment, empathy, open-mindedness, a strengthened intuition, etc.
idk if this is exactly what you were talking about, but it is really so special to be a part of a fandom that is able to breach that generational divide, both because i get to obsess over my favorite thing on the job, but also because it opens doors for conversations and that very special connection that can only be achieved by a mutual adoration of certain characters.
children's literature is truly something magical <3

I'm finally reading the sun and the star, and it's really good, but I have some complaints
I'm only about half way through, so hopefully some of these change!
1. the characters feel dull.
idk what it is, but none of the characters stand out. nico and will are having issues with communication, but it feels flat. they just have pretty stereotypical traits, and the whole embrace the darkness/light is a super common trope. I want more variety!
2. let old characters rest
cameos can be fun, but it feels overdone. there is so much Greek mythology to pull from, reusing the same old ideas gets tiring.
3. the story feels predictable
it follows the typical heros journey style, which is fine, but it also follows the same format as all the percy jackson books. I was hoping it would break the mold a little more
4. the enemy was revealed wayyy to early
suspence is such a great literary element, and it was only there for a short part of the book. we know nico isn't going to sacrifice will, because a) that would be homophobic and b) the way it has been talked about makes it way too obvious its not going to happen
nyx would have made such an amazing enemy, but I don't think it was done right. I lost my fear for her when she was shown obsessed with Bob, and it made her feel flat as a character. literal darkness shouldn't have motivations. nyx would have made such a compelling villain if she was just there, no motivation, no desire, just causing chaos without purpose. how do you fight something that dosent know what it's doing?
5. where's the cosmic horror??
I was expecting a lot from Nicos time in tartarus, but it didn't live up to my hopes. I want to feel fear. I think that this section didn't really 'show, don't tell'.. it told us nico was terrified, but that was it. a house of bugs? oh no! tell us more! more details, more fear, more emotions
I think I did forget that this was a kids book, but I was thinking that since the last series dealt with so many mature themes, this one would too. It has been a long time since I've read a pjo book. I think that I've been reading books that were different, and I accidentally became a literature snob. or I was reading too much fanfic
