Well, guess who won’t be able to listen to L’amour est un oiseau rebelle for at least a month.

(I started writing a lot of stuff in the tags, so why not make a full post. Overflow of unedited immediate-post-ending thoughts incoming)

Ok, this book is a mess, I’ll be brutally honest, it almost felt like reading an unedited manuscript with lots and lots of good ideas that were being thrown at me without a breathing moment. And Dabos really got carried away with borrowing stuff from His Dark Materials. And I didn’t really grasped the character arcs (this is my fault though, I'll need a reread yada yada yada).

But as I said, I really esteem Christelle Dabos for choosing to change entirely the scope and taste of her series; here it takes a truly dark and disturbing turn (the claustophobric anxiety of the Observatoire, the straigh-up body horror of the Horn of Plenty)... only for the ending to be the most hopeful possible. (spoilers under the cut)

I was lead to think this would be a bleak conclusion thrown in for shock value, but it's just not? Eulalie turning out to be a genuinely good person who was really striving for the best; Victoire and Second getting to have a childood and the Family Spirits getting to have a life. The last scene perfectly mirroring the very first of the series in tome 1. Ophèlie entering her Orpheus era and yet never ever loosing her willpower. Thorn who, after four books of costant trying, finally managed to sacrifice himself for her, but she just won't let him. His answer on the other side of the page/mirror!! Perfection.

What opinions are you having about Bright Storm?

I keep thinking about what it would look like if Gray Wing had been functionally replaced by Bright Storm for BB, and if there was just no Gray Wing

Bright Storm going to hunt for Jagged Peak alone, not related to him at all, but just because it's the right thing to do

How absolutely alone she'd be after giving birth, Jagged Peak gone because she couldn't save him, cradling Thunder Storm close, leg missing in the same spot as Jagged Peak

And then going back and being rejected AGAIN. Clear Sky trying to frame it as this being her punishment for defying him

"Don't you understand? You're all wrong. The ancestors are telling us that Jagged Peak needed to be cast out alone and yet you followed."

Making her doubt herself, framing it like he'll "forgive her" for leaving him if she just gets rid of the child

"I still love you, you know. Even though you made it hard. I'll still forgive you."

But the split still happening on this; with Tall Shadow rejecting Clear Sky's snake words for what it is. "You've been controlling us all long enough"

Girl characters never get treated like wise old sages either, it would be so neat for Thunder Storm to have his mom as the wise mentor type character who still can't get rid of all her love for her abuser

And how EXTRA hard it would pack a punch for Bright Storm to eventually be the Wise Woman whose words get Bumble exiled, as she's picked up part of Clear Sky's mindset.

And the way she'd look at her son with so much pride... keeping wisdom close even when her judgement lapses, rejecting Clear Sky when he throws out Frost in a way that almost perfectly mirrors her and Jagged Peak, realizing that HE has no innate love for Clear Sky

That it came from HER

After all she'd been through, after being blamed for not listening to Clear Sky well enough, following him out of the mountain because of how much she loved him...

She tried to make her son forgive his father *for her*, to have what she couldn't, even though it only hurt them both

"I used to be scared for you, how much anger you could keep in your little body, I was afraid it would make you alone... but now I see you, Thunder Storm. You're the claws we forget we have, when we hide them away to be polite to those who do us harm. If that scares some people then, well, honey they should be scared."

I'm thinking about how it changes the context of the Star-line. "Kill me and live with the memory."

The fact that it was ALWAYS defiance from Bright Storm and later Thunder Storm that takes more and more power away from him. First the wife he couldn't keep in line, and then the son who had an even stronger will than her.

And how, with that context changed, Clear Sky snapping (as he always does) and rejecting the line feels slightly more resonant.

He WILL happily live with that memory. If she will "make" him carve victory out through her throat, he will. She is a symbol of people he can't control, and in his mind, he's "giving up on her"

Bobby walks into his lil AA meeting and low and behold, there is Amir, ready to throw all Bobby's troubles at him, and Bobby spirals because damnit he wants to make amends with this man and he is making it so. damn. hard.

NOW, Athena is like, you stay the hell away from this man Bobby or so help me GOD I will tie you to this goddamn dining room table with your firehose. So he listens....

UNTIL

He gets a text message from Buck, but no, it's not Buck, ITS AMIR, because AMIR HAS KIDNAPPED BUCK AND IS HOLDING HIM HOSTAGE IN AN ABANDONED EASY MOTEL IN THE DESERT.

"come get your boy. come alone."

Buck is all like "Father help" and Bobby of course is like "OH NO MY BOY" (if you understand this reference I love you, if not, it's okay you made it this far I still love you.)

Bobby shows up and he is READY FOR A GODDAMN FIGHT (Kenneth did day a conflict for Bobby in episode 8 and we did see this man put a LITERAL KNIFE TO BOBBY'S NECK) so if this does not scream fight (WHICH I ALREADY PREDICTED ANYWAY) then I don't know what does.

Buck is all tied up and a bit battered and bruised but mainly concerned about the fact that he can smell FIRE and Bobby is fighting this man while OH NO, THE EASY MOTEL IS STARTING TO BURN AND FUCK THIS IS NOT GOOD.

Tag Amir winning/getting an upper hand on Bobby and him and Buck both end up stuck in this motel burning down.

Dream- Boat Analogue

"Last night I had this dream, in my dream Jesus was explaining to me this boat analogue.

When a boat is without its captain and steering off course, someone has to come and take control of the ship.

Now taking control of an out-of-control ship is not pretty from the inside view.

This person not only has the weight of the ship when turning the wheel but the massive ropes to pull to keep the sails up and everything running smoothly.

In this analogue, this was being done by one man.

In life we can get in a bad situation, where we let people lead us off course or we get us distracted, and our ship goes off course.

We may even lose sight of the horizon but when we start walking back in the direction of the course Jesus Christ has given us and instructed us with, the weight of our mistake may feel heavy and hard, the storm around us may feel too big, it can even leave us feeling burdened and weary. But when all of this is going on; this is when we need Jesus Christ the most, because when we rely on Jesus Christ, his strength, and not our own, no matter how far we have staid or gone off course,

Jesus Christ comes in like that man and he takes control of our,

out of control ship.

The weight and the mess we have made may take him a while to sort out and it isn't always pretty the process of getting back on track but when it is back on track to were God needs it to be, what a beautiful sight a ship that is sailing with ease and softness in the water.

While the storms are raging, and God is holding the ship together and stable it may not look pretty to an outsider's view or even stable to the person who is watching cynically but God is looking after his ship.

Even sometimes when the ship looks perfectly held together; you don't always see the hard process of what Jesus Christ is doing.

And it may seem like the ship is not being tended to, but God is always working, and he never sleeps.

No matter what it looks like Jesus Christ is good and when we give him our lives and surrender our ship to him, he helps us in ways we couldn't, he leads us, heals us and guilds us even fixing our mistakes.

Jesus Christ is the best captain! Jesus Christ is our Saviour! No matter the storm; God has it. All we need to do is listen to Jesus Christ and find rest in him."
