Ladies and gentlemen, we are beginning our approach. Please prepare for landing. Welcome to Columbus. It is currently 62 degrees…

Blaine put his tray table up and his laptop in his carry on. This was NOT the trip he expected to be taking this week.

“Kurt! I’m home! You’ll never guess…what’s going on?”

“Isabelle got me a showing for my accessories at Paris Fashion Week! Can you believe it?”

“Um…isn’t Paris Fashion Week next week? Our anniversary is next week. We’re going to Hawaii on the Honey…the trip we postponed last year because Isabelle’s assistant got the flu and she insisted she’d never survive Paris Fashion Week without you. And the year before that because... You know, I can't remember what excuse you used that time."

“Oh, yeah. I forgot. But Blaine, this time it’s for our future. It's not the same.”

“Yes, yes, it is.”

“Come with me. We can enjoy the city during our down time. Support me like I supported you at the Grammys.”

“You didn’t go. You decided it wasn't worth missing your classes the next day because my category wasn’t televised.”

“Not this again. It was 3 months ago and you didn’t win. Get over it.”

“You did not just say that.”

“Look, I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings. And I’m sorry I’m postponing our vacation again. I’m not sorry I’m going to Paris. Stop being so difficult.”

“Just go. I’ll go back to Ohio for the Groundbreaking Ceremony at Dalton. I was disappointed when I found out we couldn’t attend because we’d be in Hawaii. Since that’s no longer an issue…”

“Oh, hell no! I saw Sebastian Smythe’s name on the list of committee members. I’m not letting you go anywhere near that asshole without me.”

“Uh…excuse me. You’re forbidding, literally forbidding, me from going to Dalton’s Groundbreaking?"

"That's not what I meant."

"But it was what you said. You know how important Dalton was to me. I was devastated...”

“How important could Dalton have been if you left just because I asked you to?”

“Fuck you!”

“Blaine, don't…where are you going?”

“Ohio!”

*SLAM*

Three hours later Blaine finally relaxed when a friendly face opened his door and gave him a hug. “Get in here” Sam said, pulling him into his apartment. “Did you leave your luggage in the rental?”

“Nope. In my dramatic exit I only grabbed my school bag.”

“Good thing I’ve still got the stuff you forgot the last time you were here. For once my procrastination paid off.”

“You didn’t procrastinate, you've been busy. I remember how crazy it was preparing the Warblers for Sectionals. The New Directions are trying to three-peat at Nationals in a few weeks…big difference. I feel like an ass taking up your time, but I just couldn’t face my mom’s interrogation. At least not tonight. I mean it would be stupid if I didn’t stay with her when I go to Dalton.”

“But…”

“If you say one word about how I used to make that drive all the time, I’ll tell your new girlfriend about the time Sue was hypnotizing you and…”

“Hey! I had no control over what I was doing! And it’s not fair to use that stuff against me when I don’t remember any of it.”

“Except sleeping with Rachel.”

“I wasn’t hypnotized for that” Sam told him with an added wink.

Blaine’s phone went off (his mother not husband) so Sam went to his hall closet and brought out the box he’d stored there. Since Pam was on a tangent, it gave him time to go to the kitchen and make some calls of his own. He had a plan for his best friend and wanted to confirm the pieces were in place.

When he returned with drinks, Blaine was laying back on the couch rubbing his temples. Pam had that effect on people. “You’re going to have to go to Target for underwear and stuff like that. I’ve got a toothbrush…”

“Sam, what aren’t you telling me?”

“What are you talking about?”

“You got kind of defensive when I mentioned your new girlfriend.”

“I know” Sam sighed as he rejoined Blaine on his couch. “It’s just, I’ve been trying to find a way to tell you this. My girlfriend already knows about everything that happened with Sue, and Rachel.”

“Ok? Why is it so hard to tell me you told your girlfriend?”

“I didn’t have to tell her. I’m dating Kitty.”

Did not see that coming! “Kitty? Kitty Wilde?”

“Yes, and we have a date tonight. So do you.”

“You realize I’m still married, no matter how pissed I am at Kurt.”

“Not like that. I called a friend and he’s taking you to Scandals to get drunk and forget how big a jerk your husband is.”

“Who did you call?”

“It’s a surprise. You have time for a shower and nap. After you called, I went to the store and got a bunch of your favorite Kurt did something stupid comfort food. Please eat something before you go to Scandals so you don’t get drunk on your second beer.”

Blaine wanted to give a snarky comeback but didn’t because Sam was right. “Thanks, Blond Chameleon.”

“Anytime NightBird.”

Because he wasn’t getting picked up until later in the evening, Blaine had time to run to Target. There was also enough time to visit with Kitty before she and Sam left on their date. He had to admit he was having a little trouble getting past the whole former football coach/cheerleader thing. It was only 3 years ago.

But if they wanted to relive that time in private…

Oh God, now it’s worse.

At 9PM on the dot the doorbell rang. He was not prepared for who was standing in front of him. “David? What are you doing here?”

“Taking you to Scandals? “Ready?”

Dave Karofsky? Sam called the guy he broke up with and then married Kurt a week later? Sending them to the place where they reconnected after he returned to Ohio when Kurt ended their engagement? Well, if Dave is here, he must be fine with it.

“Sure, just let me get my phone.”

“No phone. You’re going to drink and talk to me and the others. No checking your phone every 10 minutes to see if Kurt called. Sam was very specific with his directions but I’m pretty sure Kitty was the actual mastermind.”

“Sam and Kitty…I wouldn’t check my phone…” Then it dawned on him. “Did you say others? Who?”

“No idea. Let’s go. I don’t want to give up any more of my time because you’re overthinking what’s going on.”

Blaine shook his head and chuckled. This was nice. “You know me so well.”

It was all small talk until they were settled in a back booth at Scandals and each halfway through their first beer. “Do you remember what you promised me when you came over to tell me you’d married Kurt?”

“David, I’m so sorry. You didn’t deserve any of that.”

“You’re right, I didn’t” Dave told him with a confidence Blaine didn’t remember. It looked good on him. “Now answer my question. Do you remember your promise?”

Oh yeah, he remembered. “To not lose myself in my relationship with Kurt again. To do what was right for me, even if Kurt threw a hissy fit. And I have, most of the time. Sometimes that’s not how marriage works.”

“And yet you’re sitting here with me and your husband is on his way to Paris. Weren’t you supposed to be in Hawaii for your Spring Break? On the honeymoon you never took? We both know that weekend in Rhode Island didn’t count.”

“How do you…Sam?” Dave nodded his response, not giving him a chance to go off topic, which they both knew Blaine would try. “When we had our fight, I couldn’t say the word honeymoon. I just reminded him it was our anniversary. It wouldn’t have made a difference. Kurt was going to Paris no matter what I said.”

“You still haven’t answered my question.”

Shit! He noticed. “No, but I’m getting better at it. At least I think I am, but he makes it so fucking hard!” Blaine stopped to finish his beer and motion to the waitress he wanted another. If those coming later were anything like Dave, he needed to get a good buzz going. “I was so happy when I got home but he didn’t give a chance to tell him my news!”

“You can tell me. I won’t tell anyone if you don’t want me to.”

Blaine thought about it, but not for long. The thought Kurt had to be the first one he told was gone. “Do you know about the song writing contest I won at NYU?”

“Who doesn’t? The prize was it would be recorded by a major artist and put on their next album. None of us expected Celine Dion or that the song would be nominated for Pop Song of the Year at the Grammys. By the way, you should have won.”

“Thanks.” Blaine tried to push out the memory of Kurt’s earlier comment but couldn’t. “Celine was asked to record a song for a movie, a big…big movie, but she hated what they sent her. She told the studio she’d do it, but she wanted me to write a new song.”

Dave rushed around the table and crushed him in a bear hug…maybe bear was a poor choice of words. “Oh my God! That’s huge! What’s the movie?”

“I shouldn’t say…in case things don’t work out.”

“Blaine…”

“Ok, it’s Deadpool 2.”

Dave pulled back, a blank expression on his face. “Are you shitting me? Seriously, are you shitting me? The first one is my favorite movie of all time!”

“I remember.”

“And Sam! He’s going to freak that you’re going to write a song for a comic book movie!”

“If they use it.”

Once again, Dave tightened his hold, this time even harder. “You are a Grammy nominated song writer and Celine fucking Dion asked you to write her a song for fucking Deadpool 2. Stop doubting yourself.”

“Ok, the walk down memory lane is over. Time for the male hobbit to forgo the sugar coating and get some tough love from Auntie Snixx.”

Dave whispered Good Luck before leaving. Blaine wasn’t sure if his abrupt exit was part of the plan, animosity toward one of the masterminds of his ambush wedding to Kurt or not wanting to piss off the girl who once told him she had razor blades in her hair.

Did it matter? Yeah, it did. Their time together made him realize how much he missed him. He’d like them to be friends again…if it wasn’t too weird for Dave.

His long awaited second beer arrived, but Santana declined anything stating she wouldn’t be there much longer. She then pulled out her phone and smiled a smile Blaine had seen enough to know it meant trouble. “What are you doing here Lopez?”

“In Ohio? Lord Tubbington needed an intervention for his latest addiction…Internet porn.”

Blaine didn’t question her explanation which for some reason made perfect sense. “I meant here…at Scandals.”

“Sammy called. He needed help getting in contact with the third ghost of Blaine Warblers past.”

“You are not a ghost from my past. I see you at least once a week.”

“Then Karofsky’s your past, I’m your present and the next person can be your future. Guess that makes you and your pissy mood Scrooge.” Santana took a deep breath and folded her hands on the table. “I’m only going to say this once and if you tell anyone, I’ll deny it…then cut off your balls.”

That was interesting. Interesting enough he prepared for what she was going to say by taking a big swig of beer. “Deal”

“I’m sorry.”

“Foooor?”

“I should’ve never let Britt talk me into the double wedding. She only remembered high school Klaine and then depressed Blaine who missed Kurt. She wasn’t here for the engagement and she definitely was around for toxic NYC Klaine. I was.”

For the second time since he arrived in Ohio, Blaine didn’t have a comeback because the person across from him was telling the truth. Was it progress to admit what they were saying were truths? “You didn’t have faith we’d make it?”

“Once I was out of the happy bubble of my wedding day? No, not a chance in hell. You and Hummel got back together only a few days before. You needed time to either work out the issues you had the first time or realize you were in a never-ending cycle, doomed to failure.”

“Wow, tell me how you really feel.” Blaine downed the rest of his beer for time to come of with a reasonable response. Like that was going to happen. “I thought we were ready.”

“Why? Because you went to therapy and a had rebound relationship with Karofsky?”

“Never, I mean never, say crap about Dave! I don’t care about shit that went down in high school. He didn’t deserve what I did to him, no matter what he did back then!”

Santana tilted her head then nodded, showing she was both stunned and impressed by Blaine’s outburst. “You obviously misunderstood Anderson. Was your relationship with Karofsky on anyone’s bingo card? No. Did some people think you were with him as revenge for Hummel ending your engagement? Yeah, probably more than you realize. But I know you had feelings for Dave, just not love. He was the wrong person at the right time.”

“Then who was the right person?”

“The guy who just walked in the door.” She took hold of his hands and asked “Do you remember when we went to Dalton to hear the Warblers sing MJ and they did I Want You Back? How I said we were in big trouble?” Blaine nodded because seeing Sebastian had rendered him speechless. “I didn’t mean for Regionals. The New Directions were in trouble because we were going to lose you. If that Slushie didn’t happened, you would’ve eventually gone back to Dalton. Not for the Warblers but for a Warbler…Smythe. You looked at him in a way I never saw between you and Hummel…ever.”

“San…”

“Just talk to him. Listen to him. And listen to the voice in your, thankfully no longer plastered into submission, head.”

“Hey” Sebastian said upon his arrival at their table, unsure of what he was doing there in the first place. Other than fear of what Santana Lopez would do if he’d declined, of course.

Santana stood to leave, kissed Blaine on the cheek, then took hold of Sebastian’s arm. “Thank you for coming but if you fuck this up, they’ll never find your body.”

“Understood.” Then as a shock to both men, she kissed his cheek before leaving. “That…that…my younger self would never believe that just happened” Sebastian stammered as he took the available seat. “I still live in fear of her revenge for the Slushie I threw at her. Sometimes I wish she would just get it over with. I mean, how many …don’t answer that. I remember. I’ve always remembered.”

Their missing waitress appeared out of nowhere, obviously due to Sebastian. Even though Blaine hadn’t finished his current beer, he went ahead and ordered one for each of them. Hopefully they’d arrive before the girl realized she worked in a gay bar.

They did.

The tension was awkward, but since Sam had gone to a lot of trouble to put this evening together, Blaine decided the least he could do was see it through. “How’s the Groundbreaking preparation going?”

“Crazy” Sebastian told him, but the former Warbler Captain instantly broke out a smile. “But it’s Dalton crazy so…”

“Organized chaos” Blaine finished for him. “How did you get involved?”?

“Long story.”

“Good. We can get comfortable while we get up the nerve to talk about whatever Santana told you.”

“She didn’t tell me anything. I had no idea you’d be here. In fact, shouldn’t you be in Hawaii? It’s the reason you declined your invitation.”

Blaine was still reeling from hearing Sebastian didn’t know he’d be here. As much as he wanted to ask how Santana convinced him to come, he decided it was safer not to know. “Kurt was offered a business opportunity in Paris, but that’s a conversation we should save until you’ve caught up to me. I’m on my third beer and I’m not the lightweight I used to be.”

“Challenge accepted.” Sebastian took a good-sized drink and looked for the waitress. She must have figured out flirting was a waste of time since she was nowhere to be seen. Fortunately, one of the bartenders remembered Sebastian from the old days who took care of him. “So, we talk about Dalton for now?”

“For now.”

“Ok, then I got involved because the Reopening Committee asked. It’s my Spring Break so I have a lot of extra time.”

Before everything went to hell between them, Blaine learned some of Sebastian’s telltale ticks. If he tapped his fingers on the table, he wasn’t telling the whole truth. He never lied. He just had a habit of leaving out important details. Right now, he was practically tapping the drum solo to In The Air Tonight.

“It’s my Spring Break too, which makes sense since I'm supposed to be in Hawaii. Where did you wind up going to college?”

“Stanford”

“Not Harvard like your dad. I bet that went over like a led balloon.”

“Ding, ding, ding…200 points to the Grammy nominee.”

“You heard about that? Never mind, seems a lot of people have.”

“You’re kidding, right? Everyone knew you’d end up in music, we just didn’t know how. But I have a question. When I read about your nomination, the article said you won a song writing contest at NYU. What happened to NYADA?”

“Kurt broke off our engagement, crippling depression caused my work to suffer, NYADA cut me.”

“They cut you? Depression that bad should've gotten you a medical excuse.” “My parents’ lawyers said the same thing. NYADA cleared my record, refunded my tuition, and when I refused to go back, the Director of NYADA convinced Tische into accepting me despite the fact I’d missed all application deadlines.”

“Let me guess, after NYADA (air quotes) fixed everything, you and your parents didn’t sue.”

“Ding, ding, ding…500 points to the Stanford man.” The tapping went into overdrive. “What aren’t you telling me?”

Sebastian moved his hands to his lap. “You remembered?”

“You’d be surprised how much I remember about you.“ Oh shit! Time to stop drinking.

Either his comment went over Sebastian’s head, or he was polite enough not to push the subject. “Let’s just say you weren’t the only one to switch colleges. I’m not at Stanford anymore. I’m at OSU.”

Huh? “Your turn to spill what happened.”

Sebastian finished his beer and signaled the bartender for another. They were both well aware this would be his third. According to their agreement, it was time to talk about the hard stuff. “Do you remember, back when we were friends, and you asked what was something I could never have but wanted more than anything?”

“Of course. You said my ass.”

“True, but then I said…”

Blaine’s eyes flew open even though they were heavy from the alcohol. “You told your father off? How you hated him for all the crap he’d put you and your mother through? Oh my God, what did he say?”

“You’re cut off.”

“Oh shit!” While Blaine was in disbelief (but in total awe at the same time) Sebastian seemed fine…peaceful. “That’s why you left Stanford? He even cut off tuition?”

“Everything. But Blaine, it was the best thing to happen to me.”

Huh? “What do you mean?”

“He no longer has control over me. I make all my own decisions. I’ll admit I was lucky this pissed off my grandmother, his mother. She gave me the equivalent of what I would inherit when she died. It didn’t take my finance classes for me to realize living in California, near San Francisco, was going to drain the money in less than 10 years. I finished the semester at Stanford then moved here.”

Blaine couldn’t take his eyes off Sebastian. He was practically glowing, and not from the beer. “You look really happy.”

“I am and it’s not just being free of my father. Dalton plays a huge role in what I call my recovery.”

“Dalton? How?”

“I’m not just working on the Groundbreaking. I work part time for Dalton. I’m still working on my Finance Degree, so I’ve been helping with fundraising. OSU gives me credit for practical experience. I’m also getting a degree in Education Administration.”

Excuse me?! “You? Sebastian Smythe are going to be Dalton’s Head Master?”

“Oh, hell no! I’m going to teach French and work as an assistant to the Head Master…title pending. The Head Master has to handle crap like curriculum and faculty. I’ll be in charge of budgets and making sure students don’t do stupid shit…title pending. The idea was who's better for the job than someone who broke practically every rule. There’s not a lie or excuse I won’t see right through.”

When Blaine found out his best friend was taking over the New Directions, Sam asked if he was jealous. His answer of a little was true. He had loved coaching the Warblers. But what Sebastian was doing? He wasn’t a little jealous. He was so jealous his heart hurt. “Are you happy?”

“Extremely. I know everyone expected me to be a lawyer or CEO. I’d rather work at Dalton and not have high blood pressure and ulcers by the time I’m 30. I suppose I’ve grown up.”

“I suppose you have.”

Sebastian took a chance to reach over for Blaine’s hand and was pleasantly surprised when he didn’t pull away. “Killer, when was the last time you were truly happy? Not with something in your marriage, or Kurt in general. Something that was only about Blaine Devon Anderson.”

Was it sad he couldn’t answer immediately? Blaine wanted to say his song writing. How he’d been asked to write a song for a movie. Neither was the truth. “When I was coaching the Warblers before the fire. My life was a mess, but for those few hours a day, safe inside the walls of Dalton, I was genuinely happy.”

Sebastian didn’t look surprised. “If you have time, you should come help with the Groundbreaking. Or, even if you don’t have time, could you please, please, please come help with the Groundbreaking? Some of the bigger donors asked what the Warblers were performing…yesterday. As of now, there’s no performances scheduled, just speeches. You, former Warbler and musical savant, showing up like this is basically a miracle. Unless you say you won’t do it. No pressure. You obviously have a lot to deal with, but please, please pretty please.”

It sounded perfect, but he didn’t want Sebastian to know Dalton was the reason he was back in Ohio. Kurt forbidding him from coming would somehow come out and he didn’t need that getting around. It was beyond embarrassing. “I have time and even if I didn’t, I would’ve found a way. Can we have lunch tomorrow and keep catching up…no matter how difficult it might be?”

Sebastian smiled as Sam and he assumed Kitty walked in. The only reason he wasn’t sure was because she was tiny, and every single McKinley Warbler was scared shitless of her. “B, your designated drivers are here.”

“Not quite Eiffel Tower…”

“Eiffel Tower?” Blaine and Sebastian asked in unison.

Kitty rolled her eyes at them, but Sam thought it was funny. “They’re both tall and French.” She rolled her eyes again when not only Sam, but Blaine and Sebastian, began to laugh uncontrollably. “Anyway…” she said in a way Sebastian suddenly understood why the guys were terrified of her “It’s late, you’ve been drinking and none of us are making the drive to Westerville and back. You’re staying with Tana and Brittany at the Pierce’s. Give me your keys. I’m driving you.”

The guys all began laughing again. They were so loud the other bar patrons could hear them over the music. “You…you?” Sebastian tried to say between breaths. “I don’t think my seats go up that far!!”

Sam pulled himself together. Kitty was almost at her Santana level. “I’ll drive Sebastian’s car. You and Blaine follow in mine.”

“No, I want to talk to the jackass about me and the McKinley Warblers singing Blaine’s song at his fancy shindig on Saturday.”

That got Blaine’s attention. “My song?”

“Rise…the one you wrote when Dalton burned down.”

Blaine quickly got up, and once the room stopped spinning, he grabbed his jacket. “I’ve got to get back to Sam’s. I need my laptop.”

Sam didn’t like the sound of that. Kurt had been calling Blaine’s phone throughout the evening. He hoped his plan hadn’t been for naught with his best friend wanting to Skype his husband. “Why?”

“My song writing software is on it. I’ve got an idea.”

NOTES:

I read somewhere Klaine’s original “introduction” in the 5 year time jump had Blaine as a Grammy nominated song writer and Kurt with a popular accessories line…no Virgina Wolfe. I went with that narrative.

Season 6 Wedding: Episode 6x08 2/20/2015. However, there was no fear of snow or cold, and that barn was VERY open. This is why I moved the anniversary to April/Spring Break.

Dalton Fire: Episode 6x10 3/10/15. While in canon it was 2 weeks later, I moved it to 1 week.

anyway here’s how i would have written the finale and final chapters of tower of nero and by all accounts was going to write it in the toa fic i had started. no one steal this im so serious you will find me standing over your bed

apollo returns to new york and immediately recruits the help of annabeth and percy who are waiting for him after hearing the news about jason. they visit rachel. she shows apollo her blurry visions and one deeply resonates him but he doesn’t like it.

they get to camp. they prepare the camp for war. apollo meets rhea. she too gives him cryptic messages but for all intents and purposes looks settled and calm. he doesn’t like this.

annabeth gets them into the tower hashtag architecture queen. there is battle, there are mega fights. we’re only about halfway through the book. apollo is sent down to defeat python.

he gets his godly power back as he is fighting python and as he is defeating this snake all the unsettling feelings he’s been having come to a climax as his destiny actualizes itself in the realization he must kill his father zeus. there’s this image in my head if apollo fully a god in a golden torn chiton throwing python over a ledge, watching him descend into darkness and then falling to his knees in desperation and screaming into the darkness.

the descent. and now the rise. he comes up to the world changed. the main demigods immediately clock him but are confused. he explains his plan and his reasoning and goes on this whole tangent. they agree. he has a meeting with his siblings. only a few of them. not everyone can be trusted. i kind of have this idea that he bursts under pressure and starts crying in front of ares asking him to do it like paris does with hector in troy 2004 but im not sure if i want to do that.

there’s more but ok final chapters

apollo finally returns to olympus. in the throne room. half the olympian council are in on his plan the other half are clueless. zeus and him have a few lines of dialogue exchanged than there is an eerie silence. something feels very very off.

before anything can be done, zeus’ on throne comes apart. he is trapped in a golden net hashtag my net goddess queen from book 2 i can’t remember her name. he is trapped and he is livid and we love drama so yes poseidon gets really defensive because he was not included this time AND hades materializes in the throne room like listen they’ve been through a lot no one’s ready to get overthrown.

it is so tense like there’s shouting and yelling and weapons drawn there’s no possible way a fight isn’t going to break out but a huge shout makes everyone pauses. it’s rhea. yes u heard me right

she walks into the throne room full regalia eyes glowing. no one has seen her like this in centuries. she gives concerning news, she drags zeus across the coals tbh, she explains how he got to this point and how she is disappointed etc etc

but she has also come to offer a solution because—big shocker—apollo can’t do it. apollo cannot kill him.

rhea suggests that he take over as the director of camp half blood for the next 150 years. there are gasps there are protests dionysus literally is grinning like a madman. zeus protests, who will watch over olympus. before anyone can say anything, rhea appoints hera. pin drop silence

it is the only solution. zeus agrees, considering he is suspended and with literally no other options. his agreement is said with the most malicious intent you could ever imagine

epilogue at camp. it’s been a few months now. apollo visits. percy and annabeth have been helping out. lots of happy go lucky-ness. apollo and zeus have a conversation. zeus humbly admits his errors, but in a not subtle way threatens apollo and anyone that helped him.

rachel finishes her first painting since her oracle sight was restored and titles it a new age.

In some of my writing I’m beginning to notice more and more that certain characters (not all) remind me of myself lol. And I hate it, I go back and rewrite them. But I’m interested if you relate to any of your characters as well so—Out of the characters you’ve written (Lonan, Reeve, Harrison, etc..) who do you think is the most like you? And what’s your take on writers seeing themselves in some of their characters?

Hahaha I used to HATE writing characters that were like me, and it took a while to realize that actually, they ALL are me in some iteration. To answer your question about writers seeing themselves in their characters—if writing characters that are “self-inserts” makes you joyful, DO IT!!! If writing characters who aren’t self-inserts but have attributes to you makes you joyful, DO IT! Or if you’re not into it—that’s fine too! Life is too short! Have fun with what works for you!

My experience below, this gets kind of intense as a warning! CW: suicidal ideation, disocciation

Aligning myself with my characters has been an intensely life-saving experience. I’m not sure I’d be here if it were not for Lonan… 16-year-old Rachel WAS him, and also needed him because literally nobody else “understood” where I was at except for him (undiagnosed autism for BOTH OF US??).

There was a time of my life where I couldn’t emotionally regulate at all, and in moments of stress, would often dissociate and quite literally converse with this man (looking back now, this was just a coping mechanism—confirmed by my doctor btw!—but for a couple years he was a genuine part of my psyche, like moved out of just character territory). I think I talked about this years ago, but I have a really distinct memory of disconnecting so much I quite literally thought he was THERE next to me, which I needed—he really became an externalization of the things I couldn’t deal with (or didn’t understand how to deal with). I needed to see myself reflected in the eye of someone else and for a really long time that was Lonan for me. Actually screaming crying that’s so cute.

And Lonan is similar to me in a lot of ways! This is a side tangent but when I was first diagnosed as autistic it made me wonder if I’d inadvertently written any autistic characters & it struck me way back then that the person most similar to me (Lonan lol) is probably also autistic. I was like—sensory issues?? No emotional regulation?? Speaks a bit oddly?? We are THE SAME. Haven’t really confirmed this in canon lol but I’ve been thinking about it since 2021.

Funnily, now that I have that diagnosis, my life is a lot more stable so like… I’m not currently the most like Lonan lol. But me at 16-19??? Absolutely him.

Unfortunately, I am currently HARRISON, which isn’t ideal but just like he’s a 21-year-old experiencing horrors I’m a 21-year-old experiencing horrors (which is why BB is sometimes painful to write cuz I’m like oooooh I’m feeling this… too much). To be fair, I’ve always said I’m the introverted version of Harrison (because I am lol our personality types are the same, not that I believe in those but since I was like 13 I’ve said this). But just like Lonan, Harrison has helped me now process some tough things this year that I’m not sure how else I would’ve survived. It’s important to me that I have fictional vessels to explore my own life with because it can help me identify problems & then learn to empathize with myself by empathizing with a character first.

Of course they’re also separate from me—they absolutely didn’t start as ME but as time goes on I start seeing myself in them particularly (Reeve sometimes too—our kindred spirits with processing toxic relationships <3). Maybe it’s because I am autistic, but I find it useful to understand my experiences via someone else. I love seeing the ways we can inform each other.

My TL;DR is I’m Harrison if he was Lonan so I guess I’m BB Harrison. Love this for me so much. But also add autism. Which is probably already there because: Lonan. LMAO and a dash of Reeve’s compartmentalization skills. And we have me!

owl house s1e2 notes

this episode was a lot better than the pilot, in that it sets a distinctly unique tone for the show. i have a lot of thoughts! like no really, it gets very detailed and extra. i think luz would be proud. here's an excerpt from one of the longer tangents:

this show, like gravity falls, is very cynical and absurd; but where gravity falls is nihilistic with an emphasis on the importance of bringing meaning and joy to the mundane, owl house is idealistic, suggesting that the passion we have for the non-mundane, and the joy we feel from indulging it, is worth encouraging.

the gag of the magic staff crashing through the halls of the house is great. time well spent on dragging it out

"snake oil?" "no one wants an unoiled snake!"

the humor in this episode feels distinctly less gravity falls-esque. was it intentionally derivative in the pilot? i can see why they'd do that, just to get the show picked up. and if alex hirsch consulted heavily on the script it's going to have more him-isms. only one writer, rachel vine, is credited as THE writer for this episode

"wizards are just old people with glitter in their pockets"

now i want scones...

this episode's premise is the kind of thing where i know where it's going, but i'm still excited to see it executed in a fun and interesting way

"perhaps i hath!"

"should i be like a bad girl chosen one with black nail polish and a mysteriously withdrawn attitude? 'i act like i don't care, but i secretly do'" AMAZING line. a great example of how this show pokes fun of nerdy weird girls, but it's clearly from a place of love. it's like, when you're teased in a way that makes you feel more understood and appreciated than insulted or embarrassed

i like that they didn't draw out eda being aloof about luz's safety. she IMMEDIATELY goes to talk to her, and then investigate

luz being thirsty for this guy is so great. where gravity falls would be more mean-spirited about mabel being obsessed with a guy through dipper's point of view, luz IS the point of view character, so there isn't a sense of judgment or shame

there's a code on one of the tree trunks in a quick shot: an eyeball, a triangle, and "1413." did anyone figure out what this means? i am horrified that i am like a cartoon secret code detection sleeper agent thanks to being a gravity falls fan as it aired

more of what i've said before: i like that the show pokes fun of luz for being naive and self-indulgent, but when the things she believe in fail to be true, it doesn't BLAME her for believing in them in the first place. all of the characters that represent the show's moral compass (eda, king, luz herself) extend compassion and understanding when its protagonist is proven wrong. this show, like gravity falls, is very cynical and absurd; but where gravity falls is nihilistic with an emphasis on the importance of bringing meaning and joy to the mundane, owl house is idealistic, suggesting that the passion we have for the non-mundane, and the joy we feel from indulging it, is worth encouraging.

as a result of above, the sense of humor lacks the ironic detachment gravity falls often employs in its comedy (although of course gravity falls is very earnest in specific moments, chosen for the greatest effect)

compare the scene at the end of this episode to an end tag from gravity falls:

eda knows luz is bummed out from the disillusionment of her misadventure, so she takes her to see something truly breathtaking and inspiring. she tells luz, "if we all waited around for a prophecy to make us special, we'd die waiting. that's why you have to choose yourself." she encourages luz to channel her ideals into hard work, and suggests that if she puts her heart into becoming someone special, she will already be special just by trying. in other words: wonder and joy are both out there and worth pursuing, even though the world makes no sense and that pursuit will be difficult. it is an incredibly earnest and show-defining message, especially for a second episode!

now, for that gravity falls end tag.

it's in the midst of the multiple-part series finale, in which an apocalypse overtakes the town as a direct result of mabel longing to escape into joyful, self-indulgent fantasies. so off the bat, we have some similarities to luz's experiences in owl house s1e2.

at the end of weirdmageddon part 2, dipper frees mabel from her personal sinister fantasy land by reminding her of a childhood memory in which they made an unpleasant mundane experience silly and enjoyable for each other. that's very in line with the show's overall emotional core, and it's executed beautifully.

but this end tag. it has two of mabel's fantasy dream boys, xyler and craz, watching chaos befall the town of gravity falls. xyler says to craz, "are we real? is this reality? jean-paul sartre postulated that every existing thing is born without reason, prolongs itself out of weakness, and dies by chance." craz responds, "totally righteous, bro." and i like this moment, and this show, but the ironic detachment is SOOO different from what i'm seeing in the owl house. it kind of paints me to say it, but it's more rick and morty-esque, honestly.

but back to this fundamental difference between the shows i've been trying to identify. gravity falls knows it is cringe, and embraces that to a degree, but it also has moments like this end tag where it just... stops being earnest. the owl house, meanwhile, knows it is cringe and fucking LOVES the fact that it is cringe. and honestly? i love that for the owl house. i'm really looking forward to seeing if these themes continue to be present in the rest of the show (if not, oops, i guess).

i wish i could say i'll stop comparing toh to gf, but i've gotta say, it's really fascinating to do so. and i think it's clear by now that i am not devaluing owl house by making these comparisons. i'm glad both shows exist, and relieved that while similar in a lot of ways to the show i've admired for more than a decade, the owl house definitely has something new and important to say.

Okay okay okay but... Artie changed Colton's life? How? I want to know everything!

okay I just want the record to show that you said you want to know everything because this is going to be a handful of tangents loosely tied together under the premise that it all kind of goes into how Artie changed Colton's life even though half of it has nothing to do with Artie!!

Before we can understand the role that Artie plays in Colton's life (outside of just being very close friends since they were in elementary school), we have to unpack Colton's baggage surrounding sex and, most notably, his relationship with Santana. (This is going under a cut because it is…. A lot longer than it was meant to be)

(Trigger warnings for dubious consent, creeping adults, underage sex)

It starts early in their freshman year, Santana decides that in order to cement her place on the Cheerios food chain, she needs to lose her virginity to a hot starting player for the Titans. It so happens that she chooses her long time friend and the only freshman starter, Colton, to tackle that with. Colton isn’t sure how he feels about it but Santana is his friend, she’s beautiful, and at least no one will actually know, right? ….and Santana immediately tells everyone.

Santana is very complimentary about him, which he supposes would be better than being known for being bad, but it earns him a lot of attention that he doesn’t particularly want. A lot of icky-feeling praise in the locker rooms for “bagging a cheerio so soon”, and a lot of other girls now wanting to be with him for their first times too. Colton is left off-kilter and uncomfortable and not sure what else he can do but say yes, so he does. It’s terrible for his self esteem and self image, feeling that people only value him for his body and his use as a sexual object, which only gets worse when he comes out.

While he’s met with initial homophobia, Colton is fairly protected for a few reasons — both he and Cece are competent in a fight and Cece in particular is not afraid to kick someone’s ass for him, the Cheerios like him and it becomes well known that anyone who fucks with Colton isn’t getting laid, and Sue Sylvester herself likes him and no one wants to risk pissing him off. Once the homophobia is shut down, certain jocks start to see benefits to the situation. It starts with a then-senior, a guy who’s interested in experimentation but knows that with him being so much more popular than Colton and the fact that a lot of people are still waiting for an excuse to ramp up the homophobia again, Colton won’t be in a position to out him. There is definitely a lot of coercion involved, but Colton never breathes a word of it to anyone. It becomes known through whispers in the locker room that Colton will essentially do “anything with anyone” and won’t out anyone, and soon more jocks start turning to him for their bi experimenting. Colton never says no, but that is in a way that stems from the knowledge that one word from any of these people, just the slightest implication that he made the first move or was looking in the locker room, could not only ruin his social life but put him in physical danger.

Some are better than others. An awkward but friendly hookup with Puck, one of his very best friends, is definitely better than an aggressive, painful hookup with Karofsky. And all of it adds to his low self worth, cementing in his mind that no one cares about him, he’s just the only option available.

And none of this is helped by the fact that adults in his life are also getting creepy. We see it in season 1 with both April Rhodes and Shelby Corcoran, April being more touchy while Shelby just makes some inappropriate comments, but the worst of them is Sandy Ryerson. The situation in which Rachel gets him fired has nothing to do with wanting to be the star but rather he’s the Glee member that she sees Sandy feeling up and while Colton would never say anything — he knows what happens if he does, he knows that ends with being told that he must have wanted it because he’s bi — but Rachel can raise hell for her best friend. Colton can’t find it in himself to trust Mr Schue, and he understands that his only value to Glee is as an attractive male lead, not because he himself is valued. (Holly Holliday and Sue Sylvester are the only adults other than his own dad that Colton feels safe with in McKinley)

And then the Finn shit happens. His best friend, the one person he really thought cared about him more than his body. He knew when they started hooking up that Finn was just looking for reassurance, to feel desired, to rebuild his self esteem after his girlfriend cheated on him with his best friend (granted, Colton also slept with Quinn but that was after the breakup and also when Quinn realised that she’s a lesbian, but also Finn doesn’t know about that), but he always thought Finn cared about him. He thought that his friendship was still more important to Finn than his body, that the intimacy was real even if not romantic. And then time goes on and the lines blur, Colton falls in love and he truly believes that Finn loves him too, but immediately after Colton says the words, Finn turns around and professes his love to Rachel and they start dating, and Colton is left more broken than ever, feeling entirely worthless and fundamentally unwanted and unloveable.

And then we enter season 2, jump forward to Duets, Artie has sex with Brittany and is left feeling exceptionally shitty afterwards. Now, I always talk about Artie as Cece’s best friend and he is, but Artie and Colton are also best friends in so many ways, Artie is the only person who’s aware of how much Colton hates his reputation, how much he resents being attractive. He knows how excited Colton was to tell him that he and Quinn hooked up because, even though Quinn was only using him to figure out her sexuality (Artie doesn’t know that part, he’s under the impression that Quinn just wanted a better sex experience than she had with Puck), it was the first time he ever felt like someone wanted him for him, not just because he was there. He knows how uncomfortable Colton gets when Santana flirts with him, when anyone flirts with him, when Puck jokes about him being the school bicycle. And, in turn, Colton is the one that Artie talks to about losing his virginity. It’s Colton’s house that Artie ends up at, with Colton making cookies and the two of them sitting on Colton’s bed when Artie admits that it felt like shit because Britt didn’t care about him and he’d hoped that maybe for even a few minutes he could feel like someone saw him and didn’t see the chair and like someone could just… like him, want him, care about him, anything

And here’s where we start getting into how Artie changed Colton’s life, bear with me for a tiny bit longer!

And Colton bumps their shoulders and goes “I care about you, Abrams” and Artie goes “sure but you don’t want to fuck me” and Colton goes “no, you just never asked”

It’s an extensive conversation because Artie is the only person who knows that Colton usually feels like people are just using him and he doesn’t want to be a part of that and Colton admits that as much as he cares about Santana, his first time left him feeling worthless and he’s never been able to shake that and he doesn’t want Artie to go through that too and “you’re one of my best friends, Artie, this is different because I know you care about *me* more than you care about my dick and it sounds dumb but it does make all the difference and *of course* we don’t have to do anything you don’t want to but I wouldn’t have offered if I wasn’t sincerely and entirely willing”

(Look, they have sex but it’s really about bromance, this is the ultimate bros being bros of all time)

Two bisexual men have sex and it’s the most emotional connection either of them has ever experienced but it’s also no homo idk what you want me to say

And it’s not that they had sex that changed Colton’s life, but the how of it all… it’s Colton having proper, healthy communication with someone. It’s Artie putting aside his sometimes toxic masculinity (and also Colton understanding why Artie is that way, that he’s compensating for the fact that so many people see his chair and don’t see him as a “real man” and that artie feels like he needs to fight so much harder to be taken seriously) because it’s *Colton*

I have this image in my head of them having a serious conversation (mostly led by Colton bc Consent is his thing) about what Artie wants and Artie has the urge to play it off and be a bit of a dick and consciously swallows that instinct to be vulnerable and honest with Colton

because he knows that even though Colton always seems calm and self assured, this is a lot of vulnerability for him too

And it’s so important because like, colton is very sincerely asking what artie is comfortable with and what he wants and is being very aware of not wanting artie to ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe because of his legs (and since he's not in his chair his mobility is so limited) and also like... they don't talk about it but colton knows that the chair fucks with artie's self image and self worth and he wants artie to call the shots and decide what's best for him

and artie *hates* feeling like colton can see right through him. Sometimes it's comforting but right now he feels so naked and there's still a part of him that feels like colton will laugh or take back his offer if he gives a wrong answer and he wants to feel hot and confident and not awkward and self conscious so he wants to push, to lash out, to expose colton's vulnerabilities like how colton is doing to him

but he *knows*

he knows why colton is asking and he knows how vulnerable colton is being by even offering and he *does* appreciate that colton is asking and not making assumptions or just focusing on what he might want

so he swallows those biting comments and admits that he's nervous and unsure and tries to open up about his feelings and what he wants and his questions instead

even things like colton not being overbearing but asking artie if he's comfortable when they start talking, "would you rather be in your chair?", shifting to leave a bit of space between them until artie sort of nudges him with his shoulder and he knows that means "it's okay”

artie making sure to emphasize that this isn't about just having sex but it's about *colton* and there's no one else he trusts this much and colton is one of his best friends and just reinforcing colton's value as a person?

And really that’s how Artie changed Colton’s life. It’s the first time that Colton has really understood that that’s how it *should* feel, that he deserves to feel like the person he’s with actually loves and values him and *cares*, that it should be a two way street, that he should be wanted and not used. And it’s a game changer, and changes his approaches to relationships, and gives him the confidence to start having boundaries and it’s slow going, but he would never have reached that point if not for Artie, and that is how Artie changed his life

it's mentioned in db that in quinn's first trimester she was constantly falling asleep in random places/moments - do you have any ideas of particularly funny examples of this

The old girl’s memory isn’t what it used to be, so I can’t remember if I mentioned that in any specific installments. It is my headcanon though, since I imagine she has a rough time with the morning sickness once it really kicks in, so the exhaustion from that on top of all the other hormonal changes just has her nodding off whenever she can catch a few spare moments.

I mean, she did fall asleep (mostly) sitting up at the New Year’s Eve get-together that Santana and Teresa hosted.

Things like that happen a lot.

Afternoons on the sofa with Rachel (between bouts of nausea) where they’re just chilling out and having some random conversation, and Rachel goes off on one of her rambling tangents only to realize that Quinn's fallen asleep on her right in the middle of it. (She tries not to take that personally.)

Quinn is also trying diligently to finish her third book during those first few months, so I imagine more than once where she pauses the typing to kind of sit there and ruminate on a scene, and somehow staring at the white of the page has her eyes just drifting shut (just to rest them for a second!) until the next thing she knows, her cheek is on her keyboard and there’s about twenty pages of keyboard smash in her document that she has to delete.

Character Closet: Hare

I would like to preface all the following information with an author’s note! I am not a professional costumer nor do I have any real education in costume design. I took one costume class in college ages ago and that’s it. All the below information is what I’ve gathered through scouring @teaforten‘s blog for reference pictures and my own observations while watching the show. All image credit goes to Jenny and Jenna @teaforten and the drawings are mine. I am in no way affiliated with Disney, Betty Productions or Lois DeArmand, nor any of the costume crew who worked on the show.

ALSO, I will only be covering the costumes in these posts! How you decide to draw the rest of the character is completely up to you. Everything I have written below is up to interpretation and can be changed by you when it comes time for you to draw your favorite character!

Now that -that's- out of the way, let's get this show on the road!

Oh Hare. We all love you and your wacky sense of style. During the course of the show, Hare had two significant costumes. One I have dubbed the Easter Bunny suit (or coral suit), the other the Blue Vest suit. I will be covering only his Season 1 Easter Bunny suit in this post. The other will come later because jfc the blue suit will be the end of me! I don't think I have it in me to explain that pattern today...

Hare's Season 1 costume is comprised of the following pieces:

American-fit suit Jacket (custom print)

Capri pants (custom print)

Long Sleeved button down shirt (yellow)

Suspenders (orange)

Jazz boots (yellow, often sparkly) with rainbow shoelaces

Knee socks (Right is red, Left is green)

Gloves (yellow)

Diamond Point Bow-tie (purple, stripes)

Wrist watch (outside shirt sleeve on left arm)

Accent buttons for jacket (round domed, yellow and orange)

Round Glasses (duh!)

When I was pulling colors for my first Hare drawing, I went on a deep dive mission on @teaforten to see if there were any decent quality photos of Hare’s suit. This one is probably the most popular and this one is a little grainy, but does the job well enough.

However, I really studied this image in particular. It's a funky one, but it's also one of the clearest scans that we have of Hare's coral suit! Look at all those colors! We have coral, yellow, orange, blue, purple/pink and even some specks of green in there. There's no way this could have possibly translated to television in the early 90's and yet they still made sure to put in those subtle colors to make all the others stand out. And if you study it long enough, you can see a pattern! We'll get into that further along...

As for episodes of the show, the ones that I looked to for the best reference shots of his suit (as of this writing) were Welcome Back, Hatter, Off the Cuffs and For Better or Verse. The colors are a little more muted in WBH, but you can see the pattern fairly well. And the neon in OtC is just something else! Especially when he's running around singing “It's Got To Be (In Here Somewhere)”. There are a lot of really nice closeups when he's doing the handcuff gags and a few nice shots of his back, which gives you an idea of the fuller pattern in general.

But my favorite episode to look at is For Better or Verse. Hare is only in one scene but his suit is -very- consistent with its pattern in it! It's one of the easier ones to duplicate because it's mostly the blue and purple swatches and has less of the pink/yellow/orange that tend to blend in the old footage. Also, it’s perfectly mirrored on both his left and right sides. The above images are all from FBoV.

Now I know what you're all here for... a breakdown of Hare's suit pattern. There's no easy way to say this, but this pattern is completely up to your own interpretation. One thing to keep in mind is that if you pay close attention, Hare has a few different versions of the same suit that he wears over the course of the series. The stripes and colors will shift around his jacket episode to episode. What I took from this is that you don't have to be exact with the placement of things unless you really want to. This is something that I utilize with my own drawings. I have a stripe system that I use but it's by no means exact or even remotely accurate.

For example, here is a picture that I've done up two ways: the left is the way I usually do his jacket (very loosey goosey) and the right is more screen-accurate. You can see the reference image in the top center. Both pictures are using the exact same reference image, but the one that sticks closer to the reference image is a little cleaner while the other just has colors and stripes going every-which-way. They both get the point across, it's just more about which look you like better!

Now, let's look at that original reference image that I referred to above. Do you see the pattern yet? Let's break it down as if we were to try to recreate it...

What I recommend is study the pattern from the black stripes on out. Those are big and bold and will usually fall in the same areas no matter which suit he's wearing. Look at which colors are below those bars. And then next to those, etc. If you can create a shorthand for this (or learn the repeating pattern) you'll have his jacket down in no time.

In the end it's all about how much time you're willing to spend on learning the pattern and getting it right. It's completely doable and really quite impressive to nail that pattern accurately. It just takes time to learn it. I know this personally from devoting time to the blue suit jacket, which.... I will cover another time.

Even when I made my cosplay for Hare, I decided that the best way for me to achieve his suit pattern was to tie-dye. Obviously this isn't what they did for the show! I believe it was a pattern that was custom designed, printed to fabric and the best bits were used to tailor his suit. You can kind of see in a couple episodes where they had scraps left and he's mostly pink/orange/coral...

The fit of Hare's jacket is American-cut, meaning that it's boxy and hangs off him a bit. I think they did this to give a little more of a size difference between Hatter and Hare. John Hoffman is 6'3 without the hat and Reece Holland is approx 5'10 without the ears and they are both rather slender, so the costumers tried to use clothing to bulk Hare out a little to make more of a difference. You can draw Hare either athletic or chubby, but one thing is for sure: that jacket doesn't do Hare many favors. He tends to swim in it at times.

And you can follow that same pattern from the jacket onto Hare's pants as well. Remember that he has straight legged capri pants, which means they come down to around mid-calf and are rather loose fitting. I think they chose to do this to mimic the proportions of a real hare's legs without having to go full-on fur suit and padding like they had to do with Rabbit. It gives a rounded look to his leg and also makes his feet look a little bigger. It also, once again, bulks him out.

Also, as a note because I don't know where else to stash this little bit of information, the lining inside Hare's jacket is a rainbow of the colors used on the outside of his jacket. He also has three domed buttons on both his sleeves as well as for the closure of the jacket, each alternating orange and yellow colors.

If Hare were to remove his jacket you’d see that he has orange suspenders on as well as a wristwatch that he wears on his left wrist. He also has that purple-striped diamond-point bow-tie, meaning that the sides come to a point rather than being straight (like Hatter’s).

Dropping to his feet, he wears yellow jazz boots. In early promotional shots they look like they are made more of a yellow vinyl, but I don’t think that worked very well once Hare got a’movin. One of the only real close-ups that we get of his shoes is from A Litter Help From My Friends right before the “On Your Side” number. Here we get a better look at the fact that they are glittery and might be made of more of a canvas material. Also, his shoelaces are pastel tie-die. Are his shoes always glittery? Who knows! Maybe those were just his good dancing shoes because he had a very dance-heavy number in the scene. But it’s what we have to go on.

And there we have it! Hare’s costume in a nutshell.

In the many times that I’ve drawn Hare, I’ve added my own touches to the character. I switched out the jazz boots for yellow high-tops, I gave him an orange waste band and for a little while I gave him a butterfly bow-tie. I also practically made up a whole new pattern for his suit just because. I made these choices because they were more appealing to my eye. It’s my interpretation of the character and that’s it.

At the end of the day, I would urge you as the artist to interpret Hare’s costume (as well as all of the other characters in the show) in your own individual way. There is no right or wrong way to go about this. It’s your art, make it the way you want it. If you want to make his suit screen-shot perfect, then you do it! If you’d rather limit your pallet to two or three colors and mimic the pattern doing that, that’s also fine.

This is fanart. It’s meant to be fun. If the thought of coloring Hare’s suit makes you not want to draw him at all, simplify your design. As you get better and get more practice with him, you can add those other details back in later.

Finally, as much as I’ve harped on doing this your own way, if you’re still having issues with his costume, look to the other fanart you have available to you. There are some artists who I greatly admire who get his suit picture-prefect, even when they are just working with graphite. But I would urge you not to copy their design! Make it your own and it’ll mean all that much more to you when you’ve completed your piece.

All of Shelby’s scenes. They’re brutal, vulnerable, intense. Mia’s acting was great, the storyline was great. The buildup to Shelby’s mental/emotional break was gradual all season and really made it seem authentic and real… probably my favorite episode of season one.

Leah confiding in Fatin. These girls have bonded so much from start to finish. Short of Martha/Toni and Rachel/Nora, all these girls came to the island with little to no history and now they can be vulnerable, show their dark side and not worry about the ramifications of doing so.

Things I Didn't Catch the First Time

The cross necklaces Shelby wears in her flashbacks aren’t the same as the one she wears now. Also, Shelby doesn’t have her cross necklace on in the interviews, but she still has her earring in, so the agents couldn’t have confiscated their jewelry, or they would have taken that too, right? This may be a sign to where Shelby’s headspace is regarding her religion at that point in time.

When Shelby takes her teeth out in front of the agents, the break in the plastic is quite evident. I wonder if that means anything or it’s just representing that she was the one unsettled in her skin and now she’s more comfortable with herself (otherwise she would have hidden her fake teeth like she did with the girls at first)

As someone with absolutely zero rhythm, watching people dance is always fascinating to me

The fact that it took nine episodes until someone decided to sharpen a branch into a weapon. Nine episodes and twenty-two days.

Toni is a teddy bear when she’s crushing. She’s like a sour patch kid – sour, then sweet.

Rachel only diving in the water when it was about someone else and not her. It really shows what kind of character she has deep down. Rough exterior at times, but genuinely cares for her people.

It’s to be assumed that Martha gave up dancing, correct? Just another reason to hate that mf’ing ‘doctor’.

I actually kind of like Agent Young. I hope he’s not actually a piece of shit. I feel like he and Alex (Susan too, perhaps) may be the only redeemable people on Gretchen’s team going forward.

Is the goat a parallel to Martha losing her innocence/abandoning her ‘fantasy’ world? Or am I just missing something bigger here?

Field Note #092 – For those playing along, this is the second time we’ve seen Fatin use a random object as a fake “microphone.” First her toothbrush, now Martha’s hairbrush. It’s something she’s done since she was little; in her living room wall there’s a photo of her at four years old, hosting a fashion show using a red-white-and-blue Bomb Pop as a microphone.

Field Note #093 – The surviving girls have all been issued comfortable clothing for their quarantined recovery. Something interesting to note: Shelby and Rachel have been issued sweatshirts of the same color.

Field Note #094 – Back home in Texas, Shelby blew out and straightened her hair every day.

Field Note #095 – Shelby’s dad owns this faith-based spinning studio, which is called All Rise Cycling.

Field Note #100 – The bowling alley is one of the main hangouts for high schoolers in Fort Travis, Shelby’s hometown. On weekend nights, it’s basically either that, the all-night diner off the highway, or a patch of woods next to the cemetery that everyone calls “The Smoke Hole.”

Field Note #101 – Becca’s all-time high bowling score? 249. Shelby’s? 94.

Field Note #103 – Toni is a collector of mementos. She’s got a cigar box full of souvenirs that she carries with her whenever she moves to a new home.

Field Note #109 – To describe her after-school drink of choice, Martha says “pop,” which gives her away as a Midwesterner. Based on where they live, here’s a breakdown of how our girls refer to sugary carbonated beverages: Martha and Toni say “pop”; Rachel, Nora, Fatin, and Leah say “soda”; Shelby says “coke.”

Field Note #111 – Nora’s fishing net is made from suitcase mesh.

Field Note #112 – Nora was a pioneer of the thumb-holes-in-sleeves look at her middle school. She used to cut the holes herself and reinforce the edges with a needle and thread until it became a style and you could buy shirts with pre-made ones.

Field Note #114 – Shelby has already mentioned that she once took down a ten-point buck. Her dad offered to have its head stuffed and mounted, but Shelby declined. She told him it wouldn’t match the aesthetic of her room… but deep down, something bothered her about celebrating the death of an animal in that way.

Field Note #115 – This is Martha’s first year not having to share a room with her sisters. She got her brother’s room when he moved out. In the ridiculously hot summer of 2014, one of his sticks of deodorant melted into the carpet. If you sniff deeply enough, you can still detect a whiff of pine-scented endurance anti-perspirant.

Field Note #116 – Toni is demonstrating experienced wilderness peeing position: butt behind the heels, knees behind the toes, peeing down an incline so it doesn’t splash back on her.

ok how would girls au work because i feel like to keep true with the theme of toxic gender roles them being cool and butch feels very at odds with that when like the girl version of that would be like christian girl with an instagram talking about country life and her future husband like it would be an interesting combo for them because john would be like ur an inherent failure for being a girl but also the expectations are lower already for them compared to john and sons

yeah it’s like weird! but i think about it a lot. i made a big fun post with it here.

basically my ideas are a combination of serious (dean) interesting (sam) and self-indulgent (cas).

like first of all i think sam is an out lesbian and i think she came out during the fight before stanford. like, i think she told dean when she was like fifteen, but she told john the night she left. she spat it in his face, actually.

i think dean is like. dean loves her unconditionally but is also lightly homophobic to her about it, you know? they were accustomed to sharing motel room beds as kids but dean won’t do it anymore now that she knows sam likes girls. dean is also like, weird to her about her interactions with other women, and also talks constantly about men, as though men-liking were a cool exclusive club only dean is invited to.

i think sam has like butt length straight hair and doesn’t wear any makeup ever but doesn’t like. wear mens clothes or anything, like she wears plain clothes that are cut for women. on hunts she puts her hair in a braid. maybe she braids a spiked strap into it like beka cooper.

dean is like........ dean is a lot like young, pre-john mary i think. think the song remains the same. dean is obsessed with performing masculinity, while at the same time terrified of seeming mannish or queer. she walks a weird line, and ends up overperforming both masculinity and femininity. she regularly challenges dudes twice her size to arm wrestling contests in bars, but she never goes out of the motel room without a full face of makeup. like she’s obsessed with doing both. masculinity for respect, and femininity for conformity. you know that thing dean does with his voice? the harshening? the intentionally adopted accent and tough guy tones? she does that too. and her voice is raspy, like rachel miner’s. she’s just as invested in her “heterosexuality” as canon dean.

she wears dean’s same green army jacket but underneath it she ties up a flannel shirt so it bares her midriff. she wears her hair like s13 mary, except that sometimes she puts it in little pigtails.

cas is the easiest because cas’ gender presentation doesn’t matter at all except in how OTHER PEOPLE relate to her, so it’s less a question of “how would cas do woman?” and more a question of “what would it be fun to see other people/dean specifically react to?”

so basically like. jimmy novak is a frumpy feminine christian mom. still wears the trench coat and probably a suit but when i say suit i mean blazer, pencil skirt, tights, blouse (or maaaybe a button down), low-ish heels. long hair in bouncy curls (think rowena’s hair but no bangs and black). actually jimmy novak probably pinned her hair up in a slight updo.

anyway i’ve decided that i refuse to try and remember what actually happened with cas falling in like, canon, like how close he got to human. this au’s cas gets close enough to human that she has to start like. showering. anyway she can’t take care of the hair so it gets tangled in a giant rat’s nest and dean gives her a bathroom chop. she has to borrow the winchester sisters’ clothes, because she has to start changing clothes but also because she can’t fucking walk in jimmy’s heels or in that confining skirt without the assistance of her grace.

all the winchesters’ clothes look baggy on her because she’s kind of spindly and narrow and flat as a board. like dean and sam have big shoulders, big hips, and big breasts, and cas has zero out of three, so anything she wears looks like a smock. she keeps wearing the coat over whatever they give her. she’s tallish (five feet eight or nine inches?) but dean is taller and sam is freakishly tall. cas could probably pass for a man alone but when she’s with dean or sam it’s obvious she’s a woman just because of the heights.

when she returns to angelhood at the end of season five, she’s wearing jimmy’s white office button down, but no bra underneath because the only reasons she would need one would be to either make her boobs look bigger or to hide her nipples and cas isn’t interested in either of those things and bras are uncomfortable, no blazer on top, a set of cargo pants that look feminine and form fitting on dean because dean is in possession of an ass and hips, but baggy and dykey on cas because she is not, combat boots (also dean’s), and the coat, and her hair is just like canon cas’ hair but way choppier because dean cut it for her.

anyway, dean treats cas in a WILD way, like. they do some intricate rituals in season four? they are dean winchester and castiel, after all. but after cas butches up in season five and then stays that way dean pushes it into overdrive. “i wish you were a boy so i could date you” shit. dean lets cas put a hand on the small of her back. she jokes that cas is her boyfriend. when cas sleeps, they sleep in the same bed, “since you can’t possibly share with sam, she’s a dyke.” also she called cas cassie a lot when cas looked more feminine but switches exclusively to cas when cas looks more masculine. like it’s this whole “”””straight”””” girl intricate ritual where one is attracted to a masculine woman so one coercively masculinizes her further.

sam tries to check in with cas to see if cas is cool with this forcible masculinization and weird gender relationship, because sam is gay and Understands or at least thinks she does. she also catches wind that cas is here to smash a lot sooner than in canon. but anyway cas rebuffs her because cas hates sam.

tangent, but one of my least favorite things that happens in mid spn, starting i think in s6, is that they start needing plausible deniability for cas, so they start pretending him and sam are like, friends. like 6.20 “i did it to protect the boys. or to protect myself. i don’t know anymore.” like there’s all this emotional stuff where cas is clearly talking about his emotional connection to dean, but sam gets included in order to make it seem SLIGHTLY less gay. and that’s annoying because of the no-homo-ness but it’s actually more annoying because 1) i liked s5 cas’ bitchiness towards sam i think that killed and 2) if sam and cas are gonna be friends after cas was a bitch and called sam an abomination and shit, develop it! develop it! don’t just Say that they are.

anyway it’s my au and i say what happens so the plausible deniability “both the brothers are important to me” shit does NOT happen and cas is a bitch to sam throughout s5&6. they do eventually bond later? like cas still takes sam’s hell trauma, and sam feels like she owes her for that (even though it was CAS’ FAULT IN THE FIRST PLACE but sam is batshit like that). so that’s what kind of gets them to eventually bond a little and become friends and comrades.

also sam clocks cas as gay. obviously. sam tries to inform cas about being gay. because sam too is gay. it only kind of sticks. cas doesn’t really understand how human societal roles work. cas has HUGE angel autism and i support her.

also as long as we’re talking about five and six, why don’t we deal with male lisa. so obviously the kid thing doesn’t work. the thing that lisa does that makes dean like :o is not “have a kid that might be dean’s” but “tell dean he was going to propose.” this implies that they were dating in the past longer than canon dean and lisa but oh well.

however, when dean gets pulled back into hunting, she’s six weeks pregnant by lisa and doesn’t know it. cas immediately tells her, and offers to give her an angelic abortion. she accepts without hesitating and cas does it. the fact that this - cas taking ownership of dean’s reproductive organs in a somewhat invasive way, even if it was wanted - contributes to their whole.... season six..... dynamic. dean never tells lisa about this.

that’s everything i can think of. i have work in four hours.

I mean, s1 Rachel was nice and likeable.

hen s2 came and she treated Jason pretty damn bad, i guess she expected him to give her some kind of special treatment like the rest of the Titans. I think that since her beef with him started after Jason called her a freak AFTER SHE ALMOST STABBED HIM TO DEATH what? You can't expect people to like you after you try to kill them

she even accused him of things Jason didn't even do, in fact, she was the one who started the witch hunt towards Jason.

-I also find annoying that she gets all the attention and the other younger members are put into the shadow. She's the favorite child and you can't deny me that cuz

1. When she went to look out for her mom in that asylum, Dick and Kory went to her rescue right away

2. But when Gar was being brainwashed alongside Conner, causing chaos all over the city and getting hurt by that evil company. Who goes to their rescue? Donna and Dawn who didn't even knew them cuz Kory and Rachel decided to bail Dick out of jail (which was fucking useless cuz by the time they get them, Dick had already escaped)

Mind you, during the Trigon incident Gar was killed by the hand of the Titans. All. Of them.

Did they apologized properly? No. Yeah, I still hold a grudge for that one.

-Also the scene where the amazons or whatever, were teaching Rachel how to use her powers? Girl I wanted to slap her so bad.

She was so disrespectful towards them, acting like she knows it all and being and being a brat.

I mean, they're a powerful group taking time to teach your dumb ass how to use your stupid powers! Show some goddamn respect for once!

Study Character Rachel Berry

Apresentation:

So in season 1 when we meet Rachel Berry we learn that she was born to two gay dads, and has been in performing arts classes her entire life. She desperately wants to be on Broadway and is dedicated to making sure that happens, even if it means getting made fun of in school. She even will go as far as to lie about things that a teacher has done to get them replaced with someone who she deems to be more beneficial to her. When Mr Schue decides to reignite Glee club, she jumps at the chance and auditions with the classic broadway song “On My Own”, as she is signing up she goes on this tangent about how gold stars are a metaphor for her life (more on that later). Rachel clearly gets accepted to Glee club because she is a talented singer and this is where we see Rachel’s true colors start to shine. (Rachel Berry Analysis Season 1)

Personality: Rachel is very egotistical, over-bearing, shrewd and hyperactive. She's also known to be a little manipulative as well, getting the previous glee director fired because she didn't get a solo. However, she doesn't realize whenever someone is manipulating her. Headcanons: Percy and Annabeth as Tik Tokers (Part 2)

Part 1

at this point these two have been dancing around each other for the good part of nearly a year, they’ve both amassed hundreds of thousands of followers, both because they’re awesome and also because people want to know more about them

The same day annabeth uploads her vlog at the airport

Percy uploads a vlog type video as well talking about how he’s going to go into city to meet up with a friend, he finishes the tik tok with a shot of roughly the same area Annabeth was just in and winks at the camera

The next tik tok goes up on Percy’s account and it’s him trying to convince her to get on his skateboard while she’s listing all of the potential injuries she could get if something goes wrong

It becomes their most viewed tik tok EVER

Annabeth’s next tik tok is a vlog of her going around New York City and has 2 second glimpses of percy leading her around and pointing out different monuments to her (she’s a relatively private person so I feel like she wouldn’t flaunt him around)

Percy on the other hand is releasing tik tok after tik tok about annabeth. Videos of her skateboarding, videos of her looking and walking about the streets of New York, of her eating her food and her hiding her face as he points the camera at her

Its almost tangible how much affection he has for her

And this is the first day they’ve officially met, but its a culmination of nearly 10 months of them talking almost every day for hours on end so it doesn’t even feel like the first time, it just feels like his best friend is visiting and he hasn’t seen her for a long time

In the month that Annabeth is in New York, she’s with percy almost every day. And their accounts are just full of each other

Percy manages to talk Annabeth into doing one (1) tik tok dance with her and Percy makes a tik tok on her account talking about the importance of climate change and helping sea turtles

Behind the scenes, without the camera, percy and annabeth walk around New York until the sky is indigo and then he takes her to the rooftop of his apartment complex so they can continue talking and end up falling asleep as the sun peeks through the clouds, and in the morning he walks her to her hotel, bleary eyed but with the biggest grin known to man

(Annabeth falls asleep with the smallest of smiles on her face and dreams of pink sunsets and green eyes)

He introduces her to his mum, sister and step-dad (and adoptive brother Tyson)

Neither of them directly address it, but they’re falling for each other and the month is ending and they don’t know what to do about it

The week before Annabeth is meant to fly back Percy invites her to a college party to meet some of his friends, Grover (who has been in Percy’s videos, also has a tik tok account that is solely dedicated to his plant collection and sharing information about caring for them), Hazel (has the sweetest most aesthetic jewellery making videos + baking videos, literally a pioneer for lesbian tik tok even though she’s in a relationship with frank) and Nico (e-boy tik tok duh), Frank (not an avid tik tok user but he does model hazel’s jewellery and Nico and percy have used him in transformation videos)

Percy also introduces Annabeth to Rachel who Annabeth knows through tik tok because Rachel drew percy one time a couple of months ago and the spark of jealousy annabeth felt was so uncomfortable

But it dissolves completely when Rachel goes off on a tangent about the importance of asexual representation and talks about the importance of seeing yourself in media and Annabeth makes a note to herself to educate herself so that they can have something to talk about

The party goes by without a hitch, except for the fact Annabeth hates parties and Percy doesn’t drink…

So they sneak off to walk around NYU campus and percy shows her all of his favourite spots (someone from the party (Grover) makes a tik tok of them not so subtly leaving the party together and grins at the camera no context)

That becomes grovers most viewed tik tok

(At this point percabeth has taken over tik tok and it’s on everyone’s FYP)

Percy and annabeth remain oblivious to their phones going off about their mini escapade, and they end up In the NYU library and percy takes her to the architecture section “because I thought you’d like it”

She kisses him there

And he kisses her back

“I refuse to regret this,” she whispers against his mouth, as she presses her forehead against his. He smiles and lightly brushes a curl away from her face.

“I won’t let you,” he whispers back.

OH BOY DO I HAVE SONGS

first things first, i will direct you to my twelve hour Revan playlist that i use for writing vibes, it's a mixture of vocal and instrumental and it has both a bunch of Revan songs for different eras of Revan, plus revalek songs, plus some revastila songs, plus some songs that just vibe.... it's good and most of the songs i'm about to highlight, if not all of them, are on there already.

NOW. HERE WE GO.

first things first, i need to introduce you to the title song for my mandalorian wars fic, oblivion by the aviators! god, this song doesn't fit all Revans perfectly, but it fits mine so well it was like it'd been written for her specifically, i swear. listening to the song was what inspired me to write the fic to begin with (and now i have a whole series oops). i mean, come on, look at the chorus:

can't look at that and tell me that isn't Jedi Knight Revan and the war that broke them.

next up!! liar by the arcadian wild, my beloved. this song is currently my top all time on spotify, closely followed by the song i'm going to rec after it and then achilles come down - and the fact that anything unseated achilles for the top spot should tell you something. (and if you don't know what achilles come down is look it up that one's on my playlist too.) this is a really good one for Revan's slow fall down, the corruption arc - again, all of the songs i'm mentioning really fit my own versions of the characters best, but they're just good in general. some of the lyrics i enjoy from this one:

hnext up, we have it all by pim stones. this particular one feels very revalek to me, early in the Sith years when they still maybe had good intentions, maybe after the war but before becoming Darth. there's this softer, almost desperate tone to the way the singer sings it that just hits me hard - this is the song i'm using as the title for my Sith years interlude fic! a lyric snippet:

All my life I've been heading for hell But never had I thought I'd drag you down as well I just couldn't resist what he was trying to sell

There's glory ahead but our love will be forgotten If my heart was still mine I would go to the bottom And apologise to you until the day it went rotten

next up we have the balancer's eye by lord huron, which is the song i named my series after (have you noticed a trend yet?). it's a very Revan vibe in general, and while i'm not as much of a fan of the style, the lyrics are really excellent!

mmm let's see what next. OH! go to war by nothing more. this is just straight up a Sith years song for revalek, whether you ship them or not - they were important to each other either way! ..... i am not going to tangent into yelling about revalek. that is not what this is for. anyway, the song itself is a) a banger and b) talking about love corrupting and falling apart and it just. it hits, man

oooh NEXT we have the song i was going to use for my Jaw Scene before i decided to write a full sith years fic. saints by echos is the song, and again, we've got Sith years Revan and Malak here (yes yes i have a type), the vibes of losing faith and anger and it blends really well with how Revan basically played off being a legendary figure to the Republic to fuel their war against it!

mmmm okay the discord has informed me that ten (10) songs is the maximum i should do in one post so. i will only do four more. chrysalis - the last breath by delain is yet another Sith Revan and Malak song and honestly you can read it as a response to the song above, if you think of saints from Malak's pov and chrysalis from Revan's, they mesh really well together.

next! for a complete change of pace, i have a revastila song for you - warrior by beth crowley. it somehow manages to capture exactly the dynamic i think of in my head when i think about Bastila, the uncertainty, the forbiddeness of it, but the way Revan ultimately strengthens her and she strengthens Revan

uhhhhhh i am desperately trying to think of songs that aren't just about Revan but instead here i am with another Mandalorian Wars Revan song, what did we know by rachel rose mitchell! this song was introduced to me by the same friend who sent me oblivion, and it really captures the fall of the Mandalorian wars incredibly well imo - the way it started with righteousness but ended in pain (compassion leading to destruction and that's a ramble i'm not going on here either), and there's this line in there that i'm not including in my snippet that's what scares me more than anything / if we could choose the past / we'd probably choose the same and it's like. yes! that's it! i'm going to once again go insane over the scene in the Korriban tomb in kotor 2!!! knowing the price.... would you choose to do it all again........ aaaaaaaa
