When John was learning about The Choice in LOWAS, I wondered what it would mean to make a real choice in the deterministic world of Paradox Space, and speculated that a Denizen’s Choice might allow you to violate this determinism. After all, if the future really is set in stone, then none of your choices actually matter, even when they're underlined.

If that's true, then perhaps Hephaestus could have helped Future Dave repair his timeline - but instead, he fled, and the Horrorterrors helped him replace it.

It sounds like it’s always possible to conquer your Denizen without resorting to combat. This flies in the face of what John's Consorts told him, as they insisted that Typheus must be slain.

There is a little wiggle room there, I guess. It's certainly possible to slay a monster without actually fighting it - for example, by mounting some sort of surprise attack, and catching it unawares. I doubt that's what Davesprite actually means, though.

Besides, an argument could be made that you can't catch a Denizen unawares. It sure didn't work for John.

Maybe you do need to make some Choices to win your game, then. Hephaestus seems to have been trying to help Future Dave, so maybe some of the trolls could have used their Choices to neutralize the threat of Perfect Jack before it was able to manifest.

"vernon, what are you--"

"patient's getting better," he says, and then immediately goes back to those faster 'beep--beep--beep's. "i think. heart rate is increasing. that's good right?"

you don't answer, burying your face in your arms again. you can't let him see you smile. he'll know whatever he's doing is working, and you kinda wanna see where he's going with this. he grabs a fistful of the back of your shirt, letting go as he draws his hand away, still making those beeps.

"the surgery is a success..." he says. "i've removed the heart... i've saved the patient."

you turn your face. "baby. you can't live without a heart. i think the patient's dead."

"nah," his hands rest on your shoulders, already kneading at them. "i stole your heart and you're still alive--"

immediately, you let out the loudest groan--although whether it's out of disgust for the cheesy line or amusement because he managed to entertain you, he can't be sure. he thinks its a mix of both, actually--but it doesn't matter. you're smiling now, and that's what he set out to do.

he leans over you, pressing a quick peck against your forehead. "food's here, by the way. gotta support my future doctor somehow."

I recently started reading (and ended up dropping partway through) an m/m retelling of an old legend, and it made me think of this reoccurring thing I've come across a handful of times now in m/m fiction and how they approach women, equality, and world-building.

Let's call it the omegaverse problem, because that's where it seems the most blatant (I've only come across it twice outside of fandom spaces that I can remember). Basically, it's when the writer looks at the unequal and sometimes oppressive roles women serve in society (today and historically), and goes 'this is a good basis for dark romance but there are too many women here' and then just. plops men into the roles traditionally served by women and recreates heteronormative tropes but They're All Men Now, none of those icky women.

Now, completely removing any and all gender based inequality isn't a bad basis for a queer-inclusive fantasy! But thing is, this type of narrative isn't interested in women, so they often read as if women have mysteriously disappeared from society (except for the occassional mom or sister). They don’t bother to include women in traditionally male areas (the book I dropped had plenty of male courtesans, with diplomats and bodyguards and advisors also being male) nor to create new roles for them.

They also generally don’t bother to look critically at the systemic and societal inequalities they're mimicking. The concept 'typically sexist society but they're all men (or all women)' could be used to alienate and deconstruct our ideas of what’s 'normal' and what’s oppressive, a way to compare the intersections of class and gender. Instead, this kind of story is only interested in using inequality as inter-character conflict and set-up for romance. And it sucks.
