Hey! I'd really like to learn more about the (recent) history of Israel and wanted to ask if there are any books you can recommend?
Hey I've thought about this ask quite a while and there's just so much stuff about Israel, what exactly do you qualify as "recently"? Like since 1948, since the 1967, since 1990s etc?
There's quite a lot of books and tbh, it also really depends on what you're interested in and if course, you should also read Palestinian stuff along with it. Personally, the Israeli writers/intellectuals I really enjoy are Yehuda Amichai (mostly poetry but really political), Yoram Kaniuk (his book "1948" is, I think, the closest to the true story of the founding of the state from the Israeli POV that you're going to find, even if many people won't admit it, also his book about the Exodus is really really good) and Yeshayahu Leibowitz (who has some really interesting thoughts especially about the relationship between state and religion, which is a super complex issue in Israel). I also remember enjoying Rabbi Sachs' book about the future of the state of Israel and a lot of people say he's very approachable even if you know very little about this whole issue.
From the Palestinian side, of course reading Mahmoud Darwish is just as important as reading Yehuda Amichai is for Israel, Edward Said is also considered important enough that you have to read him even though I honestly am kinda ambivalent about him. There's also currently a lot of debate at least in Germany about the book "A minor detail" (which deals with "the other side" of Kaniuk's 1948) and while I felt like that book left a lot of things out (like the fact that all of the Israeli soldiers involved in the main action of the book faced criminal charges and the whole thing was not just treated as a minor detail but rather a big scandal in the Israeli army) it is an important part of the story.
If you want more recent history, I've read both Pfeiffer's biography of Bibi (which was HILARIOUS because that guy very obviously hated Bibi and was using the weirdest opportunities to be petty about him) as well as Bibi's autobiography and I feel like there is no understanding current Israel without understanding Bibi and while I absolutely have zero love for the guy as a person or a politician, he is also very much a product of his circumstances.
Also this isn't a book but my boyfriend is currently obsessed with a YouTube channel called "The Ask Project" where people can send in questions and he asks Palestinians or Israelis that, and I think a lot of the questions are good and he really makes an effort to be fair.

I’m going to say it……there are many, many who have fought in wars, and did have or now have a mental illness….and they have not done what Harry has done…or said what Harry has said….look what Harry has done…..not words spoken from a mental illness…but evil…now look….
EXCLUSIVE: After Harry’s revelation that he killed 25 Taliban in Afghanistan... Now hate preacher who inspired Lee Rigby killers tells jihadis to target British troops
Extremist Anjem Choudary claimed Duke of Sussex has shown ‘his true colours’
Infamous preacher accused Royals of a ‘dark history of occupying Muslim lands’
Politicians have warned of a raised threat to the Royal Family and Armed Forces

Heartbreaking to say the least. (Also some people are defending it by saying things like "public education is a western concept" 🤦‍♀️ smh.
It's just misogyny, and making life decisions for women without consulting them, stop pretending. Also if it's a western concept, why aren't the men banned too 💀? Like I have a lot of criticism of the "west" too but ppl need to stop gatekeeping Islam and acting like only ppl in the east know and follow Islam. Both the west and east have their own set of cultural problems that they need to resolve and keep away from Islam. In the east, misogyny is a huge one.)

I just wanted to emphasize I don't disagree with you. The blindness towards neo-nazis ("auf dem rechten Auge blind") is absolutely a serious problem. I just mentioned them in the context of citizenship because I read your previous post as a question why their citizenship is not revoked. Sorry for the confusion.
no worries at all! i did not see it as you disagreeing, i did see it as a clarification-- as you intended it to be. i do still find it concerning, but i do understand your point. that said, even pro-russia protests did not result in such discourse to my knowledge and afaik the people in such protests and people who supported russia were not necessarily german, so i do think this shows that there is a double standard in germany. frankly, i think the suggestion of removing citizenship due to someone's position on israel is worrying and i think such suggestions have also allowed the police brutality ive witnessed to happen.

I really really REALLY need to see more people makimg the connection between trump and his russian handlers tbh.......like i know we've somehow gone through the looking glass of putin apologia but that piece abt the NYT you just posted, the bots, the interference: in the bag for trump? Yes. But i dont believe its due to his or even republican power or popularity or forcefulness.......this is a man with so much debt and kompromat thats only getting worse!! Not to sound kwazy BUT WE ARE BEING FULLY INFLITRATED and at the risk of conspiracizing i think the russians are ALSO behind the Times's demise along with so many other information centers etc. Like i KNOW these leftists love him but like. Wouldnt they care a LITTLE abt being manipulated like this???
Trump is 100% an active, willing, and eager Russian agent. That's not even paranoid conspiracy theory, that's just the only reasonable interpretation of the facts:
NOT TO MENTION that in the next two years after the Helsinki conference where Trump kowtowed to Putin in every way, the CIA admitted to losing huge and unusually high numbers of classified informants around the world (not CIA agents, but people secretly working for the American government in often-hostile countries):
Once again, this all happened when Trump was in office, when he was actively handing over CIA intel to the Kremlin against the wishes of the entire national security establishment, and which other experts have suggested was directly as a result of Trump handing over the identities of American informants to Russia, including those stationed in Russia itself:
Now, I could go on, but you get the point. Not to mention that Trump just lost a major UK-based lawsuit against Christopher Steele, the former MI6 agent who was the first to provide documents linking Trump to Russia in the controversial "Steele dossier":
And now: Trump is deeply in hock for hundreds of millions in legal fees and punitive judgments that are only increasing by the day, he somehow just came up with $90 million to appeal the judgment against E. Jean Carroll (nobody knows where he got this money either), and Russian state TV spends all their time openly salivating for Trump's return to the presidency (so he can hand over Ukraine and the rest of NATO and, as he literally said, "let Russia do whatever the hell they want.") I know we're largely numb to all the awful treasonous shit that Trump does, but like. This isn't a conspiracy theory, this is just what's going on in plain sight, and while the Online Leftists have recently become so stupid that I honestly can't tell if it's just terminal brainworms or active Russian psyops, it's strongly indicated that it is in fact a mix of both:
So, like. Just some food for thought.

as a lot of attention and media coverage is focusing on the critical situation in palestine atm, i wanna make this post to bring some awareness to the devastating earthquakes that have hit western afghanistan (herat) recently. this past weekend (october 7, 2023) over 2000 ppl died due to the 6.3-magnitude and another earthquake with the same magnitude hit the area again today (october 11, 2023).
the ppl are in dire need of financial aid since a lot of those had been cut in recent years due to the taliban taking over again. the wfp regional director for asia and the pacific said this drastic drop in funding (wfp had 80% less money for afghanistan than last year!!!) is going to lead to a famine and the situation is looking hopeless; especially children and women are suffering these consequences.
here are some organizations that are working on the ground rn and are reliable! please share and consider donating, even if it's just the money u would've spent on takeout or an iced coffee today.
islamic relief and doctors without borders are 2 very well established nonprofits that always help out financially and medically in emergency situations in developing countries
visions for children - german nonprofit founded by two afghan sisters which sets up educational programs and emergency funds!
asiyah international - another german nonprofit that's running national and international aid projects!
srowzar children - australian nonprofit that's on the ground in afghanistan and always posting updates on how ur donations are making a difference!

Dear Ma & Pa MAGA,
You say that Donald Trump “loves our troops.”
So, I want to know why that is.
Is it because he received 5 deferments from the draft for military service during the Vietnam War?
Is it because he demeaned a POW, attacked a Gold Star family and told a military widow that her deceased husband “knew what he had signed up for.”
Was it the time he downplayed the traumatic head injuries suffered by our troops after a missile attack as “not real” because they weren’t ‘missing hands and limbs.’
Is it due to all the years he tried to slash benefits for our veterans, the time he said he didn’t want to be seen with war-wounded amputees, and to keep them forever out of his sight, or the time he called our fallen heroes of war “suckers” and “losers”?
Is it the all the times he called our military leaders “dumb” and “overrated” while calling terrorists like the Taliban & Hezbollah “very smart”?
Was it the time he demanded the flags after McCain’s death be returned to full mast, or the time he demanded that a ship bearing his name be blocked from view?
Was it when he stole, hid and lied about our national security secrets, potentially imperiling countless men & women in uniform all over the world?
Or was it when he suggested that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff deserved to be executed?
Maybe it was when he asked Gen. John Kelly (who lost his son in combat) at Arlington National Cemetery, why anyone would sign up for service because as far as he saw it, there was “nothing in it for them.”
Perhaps it was hearing him say that as President he would allow our adversary to attack the same allies this county’s Greatest Generation fought beside and died defending?
Or was it when he insulted Nikki Haley’s husband for currently serving our country overseas?
Which of those things was it that made you believe he loved our troops?
Because I’d really love to know.

Im not good at writing but ill try putting it in words.
I think US americans don't realise how jaded the rest of the world is now to their performativity of impartiality and rationality. They still have the comfort of relying on proper debate and argument and being on the moral highground bc of this. Vetoing ceasefires because theyre trying to arrive at the 'best' solutions. Voting for Biden because he has still done good and is the lesser evil. Clutching pearls at antizionism because its racist and antisemtic.
The rest of the world cant afford to come into a formal argument at their level and they just don't understand that. They don't understand that at the hands of their comfort of proper statesmanship, the rest of the world suffers greatly. Tell me, why is it that one vote against many other countries, is enough to veto a ceasefire.
Why do the rest of us have to meet on the level of our enemy, the one who has rigged the game for them to win? You crush others to their lowest and hound them to still get up and hit better punches. We know our enemy, and realise they are sick and depraved for this.
America land of the great and free.
there's something to be said with people's blatant admission these past few months that they never seriously considered foreign policy while voting, thinking of it as a secondary issue rather than probably one of the most important issues you should care about considering the american government can decide whether or not to decimate entire cultures. there has been no examination about foreign policy other than "isis/taliban/al-qaeda bad" regarding swana especially for the past few presidencies. its been fairly a bipartisan issue to bomb swana countries. and that's only swana.

you said that religion is actions and relations, not beliefs- would you be willing to elaborate and/or point to some reading? or like at least defining what "beliefs" means here?
sure. now i'm sure there's some much more recent scholarship on this but everything i think of this is fundamentally drawing on/extrapolating on the german ideology and gramsci's work--but the gist of it is that there is no (let us take an example) 'islam' that exists independent of its practicioners. this is a materialist (as opposed to idealist) stance on religion (& ideology more generally).
so what this means is that--sure, everything that comes under the umbrella of 'islam' does in fact share a few core concepts (the quran, the indivisbility of god, mohammad as a prophet)--but that attempts to make any sweeping generalized statement about the ideological content of islam are bound to fail because ultimately the islam of the iranian state apparatus & the islam of the taliban & the islam of muslim feminists in indonesia & the islam of the PLO & the islam of liberal arab-americans are all fundamentally different ideologically because they are shaped not by some eternal essence of islam but by the social circumstances and communities within which each of these groups is practing.
(want to be super clear that i am just using islam as an example here, the same can be applied to any religion in any place--christianity, for example, is not uniquely genocidal & colonial due to some inherent ideological content, which is why going through the bible to point out violence & slavery and being like 'see, this is what's wrong with christianity' is a futile exercise--christianity has been the religion of a genocidal & colonial ruling class across much of the globe, and so that practice of it of course takes on that character)
hence, for example, there's absolutely no contradiction between, say, the judaism of diaspora reform jews & that of the israeli state--the stark difference makes sense when you realize that they are not both informed ideologically by some inherent essence of judaism but by the historical context of centuries of persecution vs. decades of genocidal state building. no religion has an innate inextricable character--all character that a religion has is given to it when it becomes a social fact, and comes from the people who practice it and their material and power relations.
