Note
do you happen to know of any tumblrs that do what you do, but for other... types(?) of people? i'm struggling to find an active LGBT writing guide blog specifically at the moment but it'd be nice to have a masterlist of any blog of this variety, since tumblr's search is remissfully unhelpful..! tysm
Hi lovely asker!
So there used to be a whole lot of blogs that were labeled "Scriptx" blogs and of course others too. Good thing is a lot of them were archived! So while they're not open for new questions you can still use the search and use the information provided to other asks they answered. So I'm gonna tag the other active blogs or the ones that are just on hiatus and then I'm gonna link all the archived ones!

Also of the active blogs some don't have their ask box open and/or some are on small hiatus'. Please be respectful of that, pretty please, everyone puts in a lot of time and effort and yeah.

ScriptX Family Weekly Update
1/4/2017
Heyo! We’re back and better (hopefully) than ever. After a holiday, it’s nice to be able to get back into a bit of a rhythm. Anyways, on to the important things.
Announcements
We have a huge announcement this week!
@scriptmedic moderated the VERY FIRST scriptX family writing contest!
The winners are:
@fourandahalfapple
@kathrynabbott
@pielover1967
Congratulations!
Also this week,
@scripteconomist is open to mod applications. Please message her if you are interested.
@scripteducator is looking for a co-mod with special education teaching experience. Please message her if you are interested.
@scriptsocialwork is still looking for a mod that has knowledge in the foster care system and has knowledge in adoption.
Featured Posts
19 Khajiits and Counting
The mild mad Greek goddess ( @pissed-off-persephone ) is back wondering how two different species could do the do and get results. But wait, what if we want the child to be more one parent than the other? @scriptgenetics answers this one pretty quick.
The Fish Say Moo
Fish are great! What with their swimming and their, uh, swimming and… swimming? Ok so maybe they aren’t the most fun pets, but hey you could always use them for food. But would it make sense to have fish the size of, say, sheep and keep them like cows? @scriptecology is here for this asker, with a bonus bit by @allthebellsinvenice .
The Deeper You Go, The Darker It Gets
So the deep/dark web: what is that? Creepypasta readers may be familiar with the idea, but you may not be know enough to write your own horror story filled with vomitous imagery. Well, @scripthacker has the McBasics ready for you to read and learn.
Characteristics of an Abused or Neglected Child
Writing many times looks at the darker side of humans. In consideration of the “show, don’t tell” rule, @scriptsocialwork has provided this list of characteristics that could be used in your story of the horrors of a dark home.
Decomposable Income
What makes something a good currency? Well, you probably wouldn’t want something subject to decay. @scripteconomist helps out this asker with a creative idea for currency, but maybe not practical. Who knows? Maybe it will work in the end.
An American Freshman in London
So obviously school is different when you’re in a different country, but an explanation of something basic like grade levels would be nice. Well say a “thank you” to @scriptbrit because Mod Tea has a chart here for you and a brief summary.
Invasion of the Land Snatchers
Long ago, the nations lived together in harmony. That all changed when that one nation attacked. Only @scripthistory, master of all the eras, could provide a reason for the asker. And when he was needed most, he was there with open ask box. Days passed and the question was answered. And though the blog has many questions left to answer, I believe Captain can save the errors of the scripts.
A Day in the Indoor Garden
She pulls the keys out of her purse and locks the door. It’s been a long day at the shop with everyone needing flowers for Valentine’s day. She sighs turning around as she walks to her car and thinks about the daily routine. It involves plenty of…. well @scriptflorist has that covered.
A Nuke at a Debate
Your character just moves into a house and go figure, it’s haunted. Well, he’s pretty sure, but he's not certain. How is he going to go about taking care of this spooky problem? @scriptwitchcraft has some advice that would be perfect for this.
A Book Here, A Book There, A Book Everywhere
And finally, you can set down your pen for a moment, and bask in the glory of a draft well done. The series has been selling well and now your last book is ready for publishing. You reminisce on the good times you’ve had in your fantasy world. That cave scene was epic, one of your proudest moments. Maybe, just maybe, you could somehow continue the story. But your characters are done, all their arcs completed. No what you need is new characters. And now, @scriptstructure has some advice for you on how you could do your new narrative.
How To Write More Memorable Doctors (Even If They Never Speak)
(Hey, hey, guess what. This post, right here? Yeah it appeared first on Patreon. Go check out Aunt Scripty’s Patreon and consider donating. See the future of the Script Medic.)
Billy Badbones? More like Broken bones after he jumped out that window. And now he’s in the hospital and he is BORED. He looks through the glass door and sees two nurses. Well, duh, he sees nurses, but who are these nurses? How can you make even a background character like a doctor or nurse be the character your readers remember? Bada bing, bada boom- @scriptmedic has a post for you!
Quotes
I’m trying this quote section out, see how it goes.
“I'm sorry, I was given sugar and a cat and left unsupervised to talk about cannibalism.” -Kayl ( @scriptlibrarian ) A summary of the chat
“On one hand, we have deep therapeutic discussions, and then it INEVITABLY turns to murder, cannibalism, or both.”- @scriptshrink Also describing the chat
"Tripping on your own insides is bad"-Aunt Scripty ( @scriptmedic ) Upon being asked whether someone could walk after being stabbed in the abdomen
“For a second I thought that said human sacrifice not human medicine and was about to offer help”-Ajk’in( @scriptmyth ) Realizing that she had misread something Dr. Ferox ( @scriptveterinarian ) has said
Ask Box Statuses
@scripthistory will not be answering at sks from January 5-14. The ask box will still be open.
New Family
We have two new blogs that have joined the family!
@scriptautistic run by Mods Cat and Aira. Click their names for their respective introduction posts.
@scriptspoonie is here to help you write people with illnesses that don't leave them much energy. The title is based off the concept of spoon theory which you can read about here. Learn about their mods here.
@scriptsoldier also has new mods. Please welcome LT Robin4 and PO1 Knight, both with Navy expertise. See the updated Mods page for more information.

Pylon Bios (An Update, with New Pylons)
Hello, lovely followers of script-a-world!
Please allow us to introduce ourselves! We haven’t had any sort of about-the-bloggers page available before, and now that we’ve added more to the team, we’re seeking to remedy that!
First of all, we call ourselves Pylons. What the heck is a pylon? Well, outside of this blog, it’s an upright structure for holding up something, usually a cable or conduit. When this blog was started more than a year ago (whoa), the group chose the word Pylon to describe ourselves collectively, as a fun little nickname. Whee!
Without further ado, meet the Pylons (and Mods)! (in alphabetical order)
Brainstormed: Hey there, call me Brainstormed, and you can find me at @thunderin-brainstorm. Any pronouns will do. I'm a student, illustrator, and world traveler. My home is in America, but I'm rarely there for more than a month at a time, so feel free to ask where in the world I happen to be! Worldbuilding has been my hobby for quite a long time and I'd love to give you some tips and tricks that I've learned, or take your idea and turn it on its head to perhaps show you a new perspective. The many projects I've developed have been lifesavers for me, as they allowed me to harness my Maladaptive Daydreaming Disorder and use it as a positive tool for creativity. Aside from drawing and daydreaming, I spend a lot of time biking, hunting for cool rocks and bones, binge reading any scholarly article that catches my eye, and memorising completely useless random facts that I spout at any given moment in lieu of remembering actual important information.
___
Constablewrites: My name is Brittany, and I'm a California girl living in the Midwest. I use she/her pronouns. I've always loved stories with rich and detailed worlds, whether in movies, books, games, or something else entirely. I'm the kind of writer who will spend hours researching to confirm a minor detail. Naturally, I not only write SFF, but my recent projects have all required worldbuilding on more than one axis (like multiple types of magic, or time travel on top of historical) because i am apparently something of a masochist. I'm a walking TV Tropes index and a whiz at digging up random useful knowledge, both of which come in handy as a Pylon. Other random facts: I'm a trained actress and singer, I used to work at Disneyland on the Jungle Cruise (among other attractions), and a laptop held together with duct tape is responsible for my day job in tech support. I blog about writing as @constablewrites and about random things that amuse me as @operahousebookworm.
____
Delta: Hi! I’m Delta and I can be found @dreaming-in-circles or @thedeclineofapollo (writeblr), and I love sci-fi. Like, a lot lol. I work in NEPA compliance for a civil engineering firm in the USA, and have a lot of experience with infrastructure, bureaucracies, biology, and space (for unrelated reasons). I spend a lot of time haunting the astrophysics wikipedia pages, and my current all-consuming project is a novel that is angling to be about 150,000 words (at current projections). Can’t wait to hear your questions!
__
Ebonwing: Hi, I’m Ebonwing. I’m currently studying IT in university. I’m a writer and worldbuilder, and sometimes a worldbuilding writer or a writing worldbuilder. I gravitate towards fantasy, though I’m not going to say no to the occasional stint in scifi, and as I’m also a giant language nerd, I enjoy making conlangs for my creations. Other than that, I’m also an artist and indulge in any number of other crafting hobbies, and if I’m not doing any of those things, I can probably be found playing video games.
___
Feral: Hi! I'm Feral, and you can find me @theferalcollection (if you enjoy feminism, socialism, or over-analyzed fiction) or on my writing blog theferalcollection.wordpress.com. I'm a Southern girl who likes fancy dresses, mint juleps, big hats, and using being-underestimated to my advantage. I work in the interior design industry and am currently in school for industrial design. I have previously earned degrees in comparative literature and theatre & drama. I'm a big nerd who really likes school. I've been world-building since before I knew it was a thing and writing almost as long. I’ve written mostly fantasy but the past couple projects have been science fiction. I'm ridiculously in love with the idea of being an astrophysicist but don't feel like learning calculus, so I just read about science a lot. My hobbies include martial arts, drinking too much coffee, and tabletop games.
____
Lockea: Hello! I’m Lockea. You can find me all over the internet as @lockea or LockeaStone. I’m a leaf on the wind who currently enjoys the SoCal sunshine in Los Angeles where I work as an engineer and data scientist. I love street fashion (especially Lolita) and making jewelry. I have two kitties, Theodore and Cecelia, and I volunteer at the local animal shelter as a cat handler and adoption counselor. I know way too much about cat behavior, honestly, and will yap your ear off if you let me.
Worldbuilding wise, I have a deep affection for science fiction and I’ve consulted professional science fiction writers on developing technology and worlds through the explanation of science and engineering. My engineering specialization is extra-terrestrial robotics, so if it has to do with space, planetary science, or robotics -- I got you. I’m also a fan of politics and really like developing political and socio-economic systems in fantasy and sci-fi worlds.
__
Miri: Miri here, with my main tumblr @asylos and my writing tumblr @mirintala. I am a Canadian Pharmacy Technician by day and a small time ePublisher and gamer of many types by night. Mostly wandering around the Internet helping to organize events in the FFVII tumblr fandom (modding at @ff7central and @ffviifandomcalendar), and stumbling around within the Borderlands of Pandora. I use she/her pronouns.
—-
Symphony: Hey, I’m Symphony! Use whatever pronouns you feel like, any work. I’m currently living in Michigan with my fiance, and in-between jobs but I want to go to nursing school ASAP. My favorite genres in fiction are horror, sci-fi, and really anything that holds my interest. In my own worldbuilding I've always felt myself most interested in developing societies on the macro level (politics, diet, customs, stuff like that), and the more esoteric, strange parts of my world. I like to make a place feel lived in, with secrets that may never be found and people who seek them out.
——
Synth: I’m @chameleonsynthesis on Tumblr, but that’s a mouthful, so just call me Synth. Any pronouns work. Born and raised in Canada, but living in Norway as of autumn 2007. Looking back, I’ve been worldbuilding since at least the age of four (in my early thirties now, so yeah), with a predominantly science-fantasy bent. I’m of the artsy creative type, with way too many projects on the go at any given time, and enjoy long walks through Wikipedia and getting caught in TV Tropes. The best thing is when I stumble across some strange factoid that can justify aspects of my many weird alien species. Stupid Synth facts: I have dual Canadian and Norwegian citizenship. My legal name contains a letter that does not exist in the English alphabet. I can curl my tongue into a cloverleaf shape, and wiggle my ears. My day job is musical instrument repair. I play French horn in a concert band, trombone in a jazz band, and don’t practice my flute or piccolo near as much as I should. Outside of band rehearsals and my job, I volunteer at the local cat shelter, work out at a gym, and attend events at my city’s newly established makerspace.
__
Tex: I'm Tex, and you can find me on tumblr @texasdreamer01. Most of my hobbies are centered around fandom and worldbuilding for it, though I also like cooking and reading up on fiction and non-fiction whenever I have the time. I'm currently studying biochemical engineering, with a slant in nanotechnology and its medical applications, so I need to know a bunch about the different types of sciences, as well as projecting for the development of future fields.
-----
Utuabzu: Hi, I’m Utuabzu, I previously was part of ScriptMyth (RIP) where I tended to take the lead on Mesopotamia and Egypt related asks. I’m most of the way through a Bachelor of Linguistics, e parlo italiano und ein bisschen Deutsch. I have a deep and enduring interest in the history of the ancient world, particularly the ancient Near East, and I’m also a bit of a nerd for politics, which is helpful when it comes to worldbuilding. My random 2am research binges have resulted in my knowing a lot of odd things. I enjoy travelling and experiencing other cultures, however as I am Australian this unfortunately requires flying, which I hate a great deal. I expect to one day be crushed beneath a pile of my books. It is a demise I am ok with.
_____
Wootzel: Hi, I’m Wootzel, or @wootzel-dragon! I use she/her pronouns. I’m a recent college grad trying to figure life out. My favorite thing about worldbuilding is making things as realistic or pseudo-realistic as possible, and finding a justification for everything. Sometimes, this is also my least favorite thing about myself, because it can make things very hard! But, it can also be really rewarding when I get things to work out in a way that I enjoy.
My other hobbies include reading lots of fanfic while neglecting physical books, starting ambitious sewing projects on a whim, and wondering where all my time goes on a daily basis. I have changed major a few times, and I am still unsure about what I want to do with my life, except that it’ll always have writing in it somewhere.

Note
So I'm adding some Chinese myths into my story but it kinda seems most of my ideas are from Journey to the West. Is this a good idea or not? But then stories that include hell are taken from Dante's Inferno, those that include orcs are taken from Tolkien's works, and while not a myth people who include pirates take it from Treasure Island, and so on. So I guess I'm good?? IDK??
Hello!
This is actually out of our area of expertise. We aren’t here to tell you how to write your story or even necessarily where you should get inspiration from. We’re just here if you want information on specific myths of mythological characters. So in regards to your question, it’s your story as long as you’re giving respect to what mythology you draw from then go for it.
If you want more info about a specific myth or even ScriptMyths discussions on why this is only one of many examples of using ancient texts in modern day media and fairly common, please send in another ask.
Best wishes,
Ajk’in

about language and the divine. perhaps you could check up on these specific gods? papa legba, tenjin, nabu, tahmurath, itzamna, eshu, waramurungundju, nisaba, vak, wenchang, haulili, and ogma. hope that's not too many? scriptmyth is not accepting asks at the moment though, maybe you could get in touch? i would love to ask them if they have other gods they could find because it's difficult to find, some i have to check multiple sources to find one reference to language. thanks very much.
Hey Nonny!
I've checked your list of deities for associations with plants and other things that could yield a meaning from the Victorian flower language. @scriptmyth recently opened their ask box again along with publishing some guidelines for sending in questions that you check out here. I'd kindly ask you to refer any further questions about the deities in questions. Mythology is not our wheelhouse. Regarding meanings connected to literature in the Victorian flower language, I already gave you all there are in the answer to your previous ask.
Eshu – symbol: cane, pine // misc: god of travellers, fortune, misfortune
Haulili – none
Itzamna – none
Nabu – none
Nisaba – misc: her horned tiara also bears ears of grain
Ogma – none
Papa Legba – symbol: knife // animal: dog // misc: god of messenger
Tenjin – plant: chinese plum tree // offering: poetry // misc: god of knowledge, examinations, strongly associated with passing exams
Tahmurath – none
Vak – misc: she inspires to reach truth in all forms
Waramurungundju – //misc: goddess of fertility
Wenchang Wang – abode: starts // misc: called upon by writers in need of inspiration
Victorian flower language meanings corresponding with any of the above topics and plants.
apple blossom – good fortune, preference, better things to come, fame speaks him/you great and good
bittersweet nightshade – truth
bittersweet – truth
chrysanthemum – truth, cheerfulness and loveliness, abundance, wealth, cheerfulness, you're a wonderful friend
chrysanthemum (white) – truth
coronilla – success to you, success crown your wishes
dog rose – simplicity, pleasure and pain
dogsbane – deceit, falsehood
dogwood – I am perfectly indifferent to you, love undiminished by adversity, durability
eglantine – poetry, I wound to heal
indian cane – rendezvous
iris – I have a message for you, message, faith, wisdom, promise in love, hope valour
laurel – success and glory, glory, virtue is beauty, treachery
nemophila – success everywhere
nightshade – truth, dark thoughts, scepticism, falsehood
palm – success, victory
pine – time and faith, boldness, pity, daring hope
pine (pitch) – philosophy
pine (spruce) – hope in adversity
plum tree – keep your promises, fidelity
pomegranate – foppery, foolishness (often associated with goddesses of fertility especially in Greek and Roman mythology)
poppy (yellow) – success, wealth
rose (wild) – poetry
solidago – success
stephanotis – desire to travel, marital happiness, happiness in marriage, will you accompany me to the East?
sweetbrier (european) – poetry, imagination, I wound to heal
traveller’s joy – traveller’s joy, safety, rest
wallflower – fidelity in misfortune/adversity, faithfulness in adversity, fidelity, lasting beauty
As you can see there are plenty associations which can be drawn to the world of flowers, but none whatsoever directing back to literature except for Tenjin's connection to poetry.

Yeah, but Persephone's kidnapping is also one of the myths most observed to change over time, which is really cool and @scriptmyth has a really cool post about it. While it's thought that him abducting her against her will might be the original one, we don't know if the later stories of her going willingly might be inspired by or referencing older stories passed through the oral tradition, or merging stories about the queen of the dead from a near-by culture.
My favorite is probably Hestia because a common theme through most of the gods is selfishness and greed, but I have yet to find one where she isn't kind and welcoming and selfless. Especially when you compare her domain and Hera's and their contrasting personalities. That being said, it would be awesome if someone could find a story where she is one of the above, because it would be so interesting to see what finally makes the Goddess of the Hearth snap!
Oh you have unleashed someone who’s been fixated on Greek Myths since elementary and it has not wavered since then and was literally just writing about it 2 minutes ago. Be warned
(Anyway, I have never been able to fully talk with someone about Greek Myths, ever. …There is a lot of stuff up here. It’s the fandom of my first ever fanfic (well technically Percy Jackson was, but the mythology part was heavily influenced too))
Neat! Percy Jackson was the fandom of the first fanfic I wrote too (in a moment of courage I posted it on here), and infodumping abt the myths is a lot of fun for me, but I also like sparking debates about it, like how do you think the repeated violation of womens' boundaries by Zeus could represent Greek attitudes towards women, and how does the potrayal of Hades as one of the kindest gods even though he's the god of death relate to the skewed perspectives people have towards monarchies versus those who supervise the dungeon, but I've found most of my friends don't know enough to go in-depth like that. It's also really cool to observe variations the myths adapt over different time periods.

In folklore, what can make a witch powerless? And how can witches free or protect themselves from those things? Plus, what can kill witches? To make it clear in which contest I need to use those informations: at one point my main character (who practices witchcraft) is imprisoned by other witches who have to prevent her from using her powers, but later she manages to free herself. And earlier in the story she managed to kill another powerful male witch. The story is set in XIX England (sort of)
Hi anon!
This may be a better question for @scriptmyth or @scripthistory! We deal with how witchcraft (and a little bit paganism, at this point) works in the real world in the modern era, as well as how to apply them as inspiration in fantasy. We’re not really for folklore or how people of history may have viewed those they suspected of being witches.
And a word to the wise in researching witchcraft-- there’s a lot of glorification of “The Burning Times,” largely to the point of making up historical events that didn’t really happen and vastly exaggerating what did happening.
This has been a Scriptwitchcraft PSA

Hey y’all! Most of you have probably heard of the ScriptX family, but if you haven’t this post is for you! The ScriptX family is a collection of blogs moderated by people knowledgeable in a wide range of subjects! For example, The Matriarch, Script Medic (X), answers questions about injuries (not including torture) while ScriptMyth (X) answers questions about mythology!
I highly recommend these blogs for information/ideas! I love scrolling through them just to get the creative juices flowing :) (It’s also a great way to find other writers who ask questions off anon)

Script Family Weekly Update
Hey, y’all. It’s gonna be a short one this week. I was busy partly due to good ol’ Independence Day here in the U.S. so this week I’m keeping it simple.
@scriptmyth is up and running again. Yay!
We have two new scriptblogs: @scriptsociology and @scriptairforce
I have started a gofundme to help pay for college. Check out the donation page by clicking here.
I think that’s all for this week. Sorry about the short post. Hopefully I will have more time next week. Until then, this is your host, signing off.

TIA, might sound rude a bit, sorry. A is crazy in love w/P. P dies & A uses their friends as sacrifice to bring her back. I'm having trouble w/execution and wondering if it's better as a subplot since the events are a catalyst for another story.
There’s a lot going on in this ask:
“crazy in love” is a little vague, is A actually in love, or is it obsession or posessiveness?
“A uses their friends as sacrifice to bring her back” that sounds like the actions of a serious villain -- and again I have to ask are these people A’s friends, or are they just people that A sees as a means to an end?
how does P deal with the whole situation? Was the death something that they knew was going to happen beforehand? Had they discussed all of this? Would P have wanted to be brought back? Would P have wanted to be brought back at such a cost?
What did the friends do to ‘deserve’ being used as human sacrifices?
What is going on in the world of your story that such an exchange can be made?
What is going to happen to P and A after all of this occurs?
Are there going to be consequences for P?
Are there going to be aftereffects for A?
I think what you mean is ‘should this be backstory?’, and if you feel that the bulk of the story that you want to tell is caused by these events, then yes, this would be backstory. But I think there’s enough here to be a story in itself, if that’s what you want to do with it.
If you’re struggling with getting all of this down, it might be helpful to go through and plot out what it is that drives all of these people. What are the friends doing, what are their goals? Their dreams? What did P want to do with her life before all of this happened? How does she feel about being brought back? What was A doing before this situation occurred? Why did A have the skills/ abilities to do this?
As well, there’s probably going to be a lot for you to think about in terms of what death/ the afterlife means in the world of your story, what did P experience having died? What effects could bringing her back have on the world?
I’d suggest taking a look over at @scriptshrink if you need to get a better handle on A’s behaviour, and you might look at @scriptwitchcraft or @scriptmyth to get a handle on the magical/ afterlife elements

advice for building a world that is roughly the same as our own but with magic, vampires and stuff?
Tex: Anthropology is a wonderful subject, precisely because the answer to this varies depending upon whom you ask - magic is believed in some manner and degree in most of the world (how often do you knock on wood, or perform a ritualized superstition for good luck?), and the belief in, for example, vampires is still strong in many parts of the world. Going by this, technically we already live in a world with “magic, vampires and stuff”, and it’s merely levels of interaction with the supernatural.
Both @scriptmyth and @scriptwitchcraft would be able to offer you more nuanced help, but if you’d like to come back with questions about how to structure a world with specific types of magic, mythological creatures, or superstitions, we’d be happy to help!
Feral: May I suggest starting with the multitude of ways this has been done by other authors? There are dozens of ways to integrate magic, vampires, and other mythological elements into a modern, otherwise unchanged setting.TV tropes will be very helpful to you in identifying some novels, tv shows, and movies that do it. Start with the Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance pages and allow yourself to spiral into the unknown by selecting the subtropes that speak to what intrigues you about the concept.
