do you happen to know of any tumblrs that do what you do, but for other... types(?) of people? i'm struggling to find an active LGBT writing guide blog specifically at the moment but it'd be nice to have a masterlist of any blog of this variety, since tumblr's search is remissfully unhelpful..! tysm
Hi lovely asker!
So there used to be a whole lot of blogs that were labeled "Scriptx" blogs and of course others too. Good thing is a lot of them were archived! So while they're not open for new questions you can still use the search and use the information provided to other asks they answered. So I'm gonna tag the other active blogs or the ones that are just on hiatus and then I'm gonna link all the archived ones!

ScriptX Family Weekly Update
1/4/2017
Heyo! Weâre back and better (hopefully) than ever. After a holiday, itâs nice to be able to get back into a bit of a rhythm. Anyways, on to the important things.
Announcements
We have a huge announcement this week!
@scriptmedic moderated the VERY FIRST scriptX family writing contest!
The winners are:

Congratulations!
Also this week,
@scripteconomist is open to mod applications. Please message her if you are interested.
@scripteducator is looking for a co-mod with special education teaching experience. Please message her if you are interested.
@scriptsocialwork is still looking for a mod that has knowledge in the foster care system and has knowledge in adoption.
Featured Posts
19 Khajiits and Counting
The mild mad Greek goddess ( @pissed-off-persephone ) is back wondering how two different species could do the do and get results. But wait, what if we want the child to be more one parent than the other? @scriptgenetics answers this one pretty quick.
The Fish Say Moo
Fish are great! What with their swimming and their, uh, swimming and⌠swimming? Ok so maybe they arenât the most fun pets, but hey you could always use them for food. But would it make sense to have fish the size of, say, sheep and keep them like cows? @scriptecology is here for this asker, with a bonus bit by @allthebellsinvenice .
The Deeper You Go, The Darker It Gets
So the deep/dark web: what is that? Creepypasta readers may be familiar with the idea, but you may not be know enough to write your own horror story filled with vomitous imagery. Well, @scripthacker has the McBasics ready for you to read and learn.
Characteristics of an Abused or Neglected Child
Writing many times looks at the darker side of humans. In consideration of the âshow, donât tellâ rule, @scriptsocialwork has provided this list of characteristics that could be used in your story of the horrors of a dark home.
Decomposable Income
What makes something a good currency? Well, you probably wouldnât want something subject to decay. @scripteconomist helps out this asker with a creative idea for currency, but maybe not practical. Who knows? Maybe it will work in the end.
An American Freshman in London
So obviously school is different when youâre in a different country, but an explanation of something basic like grade levels would be nice. Well say a âthank youâ to @scriptbrit because Mod Tea has a chart here for you and a brief summary.
Invasion of the Land Snatchers
Long ago, the nations lived together in harmony. That all changed when that one nation attacked. Only @scripthistory, master of all the eras, could provide a reason for the asker. And when he was needed most, he was there with open ask box. Days passed and the question was answered. And though the blog has many questions left to answer, I believe Captain can save the errors of the scripts.
A Day in the Indoor Garden
She pulls the keys out of her purse and locks the door. Itâs been a long day at the shop with everyone needing flowers for Valentineâs day. She sighs turning around as she walks to her car and thinks about the daily routine. It involves plenty ofâŚ. well @scriptflorist has that covered.
A Nuke at a Debate
Your character just moves into a house and go figure, itâs haunted. Well, heâs pretty sure, but he's not certain. How is he going to go about taking care of this spooky problem? @scriptwitchcraft has some advice that would be perfect for this.
A Book Here, A Book There, A Book Everywhere
And finally, you can set down your pen for a moment, and bask in the glory of a draft well done. The series has been selling well and now your last book is ready for publishing. You reminisce on the good times youâve had in your fantasy world. That cave scene was epic, one of your proudest moments. Maybe, just maybe, you could somehow continue the story. But your characters are done, all their arcs completed. No what you need is new characters. And now, @scriptstructure has some advice for you on how you could do your new narrative.
How To Write More Memorable Doctors (Even If They Never Speak)
(Hey, hey, guess what. This post, right here? Yeah it appeared first on Patreon. Go check out Aunt Scriptyâs Patreon and consider donating. See the future of the Script Medic.)
Billy Badbones? More like Broken bones after he jumped out that window. And now heâs in the hospital and he is BORED. He looks through the glass door and sees two nurses. Well, duh, he sees nurses, but who are these nurses? How can you make even a background character like a doctor or nurse be the character your readers remember? Bada bing, bada boom- @scriptmedic has a post for you!
Quotes
Iâm trying this quote section out, see how it goes.
âI'm sorry, I was given sugar and a cat and left unsupervised to talk about cannibalism.â -Kayl ( @scriptlibrarian ) A summary of the chat
âOn one hand, we have deep therapeutic discussions, and then it INEVITABLY turns to murder, cannibalism, or both.â- @scriptshrink Also describing the chat
"Tripping on your own insides is bad"-Aunt Scripty ( @scriptmedic ) Upon being asked whether someone could walk after being stabbed in the abdomen
âFor a second I thought that said human sacrifice not human medicine and was about to offer helpâ-Ajkâin( @scriptmyth ) Realizing that she had misread something Dr. Ferox ( @scriptveterinarian ) has said
Ask Box Statuses
@scripthistory will not be answering at sks from January 5-14. The ask box will still be open.
New Family
We have two new blogs that have joined the family!
@scriptautistic run by Mods Cat and Aira. Click their names for their respective introduction posts.

Hello! I'm not sure how much you know about the 1848-50 California gold rush, but as a native Californian, I've always been fascinated by the topic. My question is multifaceted. For one: how big would miners plots of land along the various rivers be, and would people actually live on the same plots that they mined for gold? Also, what would it be like for a young woman and/or young men and children in an area like this?
Hello there! Well, arenât you in luck because we have the Archivist from @scriptlibrarian answering this one! The Archivist has also studied history and has got your back so just read on!
There is gold in them darn hills!
Quick history of the California Gold Rush. Â In 1848, John Marshal found flecks of gold in the American River, just below the Sierra Nevadas, in Coloma California, while building a water powered sawmill for John Sutter.
Just days after he discovered the gold, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed, ending the Mexican-American War, giving California to the United States and essentially the gold.
The discovery of Gold shaped California into the state is today. Â California saw the largest migration influx in the history of the United States. Â In 1848 there was roughly 157,000 people in California (150,000 Natives, 6,500 Spanish/Mexican, 700 American/Non-Native). Â Within 20 months the Non-Native Population soared to 100,000 and by the mid 1850âs was past 300,000. Â This massive population influx put California on fast track to Statehood, and with the Compromise of 1850 California was allowed into the Union, just two years after the land was acquired, as a Free State - leading a imbalance in Free vs Slave States. Â
So now that we got background history established letâs look at your questions.
How big would minerâs plots of land along the various rivers beâŚ
I admit, I dug around for this information and beyond going into deep dark storage and digging out (pun intended) my books from school ⌠the best answer I could find is - depends.
Yeah I hate that also.
A miner would first have to  Staking a Claim, which involves first the discovery of a valuable mineral in quantities that a âprudent manâ would invest time and expenses to recover them. Then mark the claim boundaries, with wooden posts, capped steel posts, both of which must be four feet tall, or stone cairns, which must be three feet tall. Then filing a claim with the land management agency (USFS or BLM), and the local county registrar.  Â
There are four types of Land Claims, a miner could make:
Placer (minerals free of the local bedrock, and deposited in benches or streams) - This would be your typical visual of Gold Miners. Â Bent over a stream with a pan, looking for flexs or small nuggets of gold.Â
Lode (minerals in place in the mother rock) - next stage up. Â The Miner has a section off shoot of the river, and is breaking up the rocks looking for veins of gold.
Tunnel (a location for a proposed tunnel which claims all veins discovered during the driving of it) - This would be someone with enough capital to start mining operation looking for gold, and could hire workers.
Millsite (a maximum five acre site for processing ore) - This is a full on organization, that is mining not just gold, but other minerals as well. Â Has a team of miners, and likely a full town surrounding it to supplement the miners.
So if your character would need to find the gold, stake out his claim, then register it. Â Depending on how much gold found, expense to work the land, and fees for the register - would determine the size of his land claim.
Would your character live in the same spot as they mine?
Yes, they would have a camp with a tent and supplies near by, so they could work their claim dawn to dusk. Â They did this for a variety of reasons:
Ease of access to the claim. Â The last thing anyone wanted to do was hike in and out of the area, wasting precious time traveling when they could be mining.
Protecting their assets. Â If they are away from their claim, someone could sneak in and mine the area, or re stake the claim stating it was abandoned.
Also, what would it be like for a young woman and/or young men and children in an area like this?
The Gold Rush was not really a place for children. It was a brutal work, and a very lonely existence. Â Many men left their families behind in hopes of making it rich to bring back the gold to them. Â Â
That doesnât mean that there wasnât women in the camps. Â
At one point there was a call out to women to go to California, because there was a fear men would do âuntoldâ things without the calm and stable influence of a woman (not many headed the call).
There were wives that worked the claims with their husbands, and likely even a few who took over the claim after he died. Â Though this was dangerous as she would be on her own, and had very little rights to the land. Â
Most of the women seen in or around the camps were washers, cooks, those seeking out a living for their family. Â These women came with their husbands, fathers, brothers and ended up making the money for the family to survive, while the men panned for gold.
By the 1850âs there were roughly 1000 women working in and around the mines, but they were still a small part of the population, and  by the 1860âs they were less than 19% of the population of California.
A good resource to look into the role women played in the Gold Rush would be They Saw the Elephant: Woman in the Gold Rush by JoAnn Levy.
Now as for young men, it would depend on what you mean by young men? Â
There were many teenage boys out in the fields, either they came with their father or ran away from home. The Gold Rush was an opportunity to make it rich fast, and men from all walks of life, old and young found their way to California.
Children were less likely in the mines or panning for gold. Â If the whole family was in the gold fields, the younger kids would be with mom, helping with cooking, washing, etc. Â Older boys maybe 12ish would be with dad. Â There are not many accounts, but it didnât mean they werenât there. Â
William Tecumseh Sherman - the future Civil War General, worked in San Francisco during the Gold Rush as a banker, and had his two young sons with him during the time, while his wife and daughter stayed back East. Â Now this was in the city and not the gold fields. Â Women, kids and families were very common in San Francisco.
In contrast Ulysses S. Grant was in the Army at the time, stationed in the gold fields and had left his family behind. Â This also led to him being discharged from the Army, because of his drinking problem, as he had never done well being away from his wife, Julia.
Irony both men would come together a decade later, a friendship that some say changed the world. Â But that is another essay.
Some interesting facts about the Gold Rush that could be helpful.
The Gold Rush attracted immigrants from around the world, by 1850 more than 25 percent of Californiaâs population had been born outside the United States. As the amount of available gold began to dwindle, miners increasingly fought one another for profits and anti-immigrant tensions soared. In 1850 Californiaâs legislature passed a Foreign Minerâs tax, which levied a monthly fee of $20 on non-citizens, the equivalent of more than $500 in todayâs money. That bill was eventually repealed, but was replaced with another in 1852 that expressly singled out Chinese miners, charging them $2 ($80 today) a month. Violence against foreign miners increased as well, and beatings, rapes and even murders became commonplace. However no ethnic group suffered more than Californiaâs Native Americans. Before the Gold Rush, its native population numbered roughly 300,000. Within 20 years, more than 100,000 would be dead. Most died from disease or mining-related accidents, but more than 4,000 were murdered by enraged miners.
Early sections of San Francisco were built out of ships abandoned by prospectors. The Gold Rush conjures up images of thousands of ââ49ersâ heading west in wagons to strike it rich in California, but many of the first prospectors actually arrived by ship. Within months, San Franciscoâs port was teeming with boats that had been abandoned after their passengers, and crew headed inland to hunt for gold. As the formerly tiny town began to boom, demand for lumber increased dramatically, and the ships were dismantled and sold as construction material. Hundreds of houses, banks, saloons, hotels, jails and other structures were built out of the abandoned ships, while others were used as landfill. Today, more than 150 years after the Gold Rush began, archeologists and preservations continue to find relics, sometimes even entire ships, beneath the streets of the City by the Bay. Â Map of where ships can be found in San Francisco
Mining wasnât cheap! Most of the men who flocked to northern California arrived with little more than the clothes on their backs. Once there, they needed to buy food and supplies, which San Franciscoâs merchants were all too willing to provide for a cost. Stuck in a remote region, far from home, many prospectors coughed up most of their hard-earned money for the most basic supplies. At the height of the boom in 1849, prospectors could expect prices sure to cause sticker shock: A single egg could cost the equivalent of $25 in todayâs money, coffee went for more than $100 per pound and replacing a pair of worn out boots could set you back more than $2,500.
The merchantâs made the money not the miners. Â As the boom continued, more and more men got out of the gold-hunting business and began to open businesses catering to newly arrived prospectors. In fact, some of Americaâs greatest industrialists got their start in the Gold Rush. Philip Armour, who would later found a meatpacking empire in Chicago, made a fortune operating the sluices that controlled the flow of water into the rivers being mined. Before John Studebaker built one of Americaâs great automobile fortunes, he manufactured wheelbarrows for Gold Rush miners. And two entrepreneurial bankers named Henry Wells and William Fargo moved west to open an office in San Francisco, an enterprise that soon grew to become one of Americaâs premier banking institutions. One of the biggest mercantile success stories was that of Levi Strauss. A German-born tailor, Strauss arrived in San Francisco in 1850 with plans to open a store selling canvas tarps and wagon coverings to the miners. After hearing that sturdy work pants, ones that could withstand the punishing 16-hour days regularly put in by miners, were more in demand, he shifted gears, opening a store in downtown San Francisco that would eventually become a manufacturing empire, producing Leviâs denim jeans.
And to prove how fate is fickle - the man whoâs name will always be associated with the California Gold Rush - John Sutter - died in poverty. Â As news had spread about the discovery of gold on his property, within months, most of his workers had abandoned him to search for gold themselves, while thousands of other prospectors overran and destroyed much of his land and equipment. Faced with mounting debts, Sutter was forced to deed his land to one of his sons, who used it to create a new settlement called Sacramento. Sutter Sr. was furiousâhe had hoped the town would be named after himâbut he had more pressing concerns. Nearly bankrupt, he began a decades-long campaign to have the U.S. government reimburse him for his financial losses, to no avail. While thousands became rich off his former land, a bitter Sutter retired to Pennsylvania and died.
I hope this information is helpful, and will give you some insight of the world during the California Gold Rush.

ScriptX Family Weekly Update
2/22/2017
Hey, yâall. Itâs been another week of giving out accurate writing advice and thereâs plenty more where that came from, so letâs get to it.
Announcements
The biggest announcement this week is down in the Ask Box Statuses section, so if you want to scroll on down there, go ahead.
Featured Posts
A Whole New World of Money
So here in the good olâ real world, we only have one universe that we are able to interact with. However, many fictional worlds have multiple universes that interact with each other to some extent. Many times the differences in these universes are huge, for example in Phineas and Ferb: Across the Second Dimension, Dr. Doofenshmirtz was actually competent and took over the Tristate Area resulting in a pink sky for reasons.
Other times it's much more subtle. @scripteconomist explores some of the ways a simple 5-Dollar bill could be slightly different in another universe.
Starving Author
Writing is usually a back burner career because eating is nice. But if your character is wanting to make writing primary line of income, how might they go about getting the moola before writing the figgedy-giggen thing. @scriptpublishingindustry has a few methods that your character could get a little cash advance.
There's Gold in Them Hills
Youâre writing a historical fiction about the 1849 California gold rush. Your character, a mother and wife, is following her husband west towards the golden banks. What might life be like for Mrs. McBasic and her family? @scripthistory has a post written by the dear archivist of @scriptlibrarian .
Clean Up on Aisle 10
As any person working anywhere is still a person, so a service dog is still a dog. Dogs have weird quirks that can make certain areas of training more difficult than others. @scriptservicedogs takes an anonâs ask about a training service dog they saw at their store and reminds us about some of the interesting things that can happen with a service dog in training. (Also thereâs a picture of Bucky, mod @anauthorandherservicedog âs own service dog)
What's That Called Again?
Your protagonist, Louis MacBasic the III, does not live in modern times. In fact, he does not even live in an approximation of this world, but rather he lives in a medieval fantasy world where many psychological diagnoses donât exist or have different names. How could you go about showing your readers that the characters in your tale have certain conditions, PTSD for example, without being able to call it by the name we know it as? @scriptshrink has a few suggestions that you might find helpful.
You Have a Helmet for a Reason
Take a minute right now and think through what gear an astronaut would have when going out into space. Seriously, do it. Itâll make it seem like this post takes some actual time to read. You done? Good. So you probably thought, pants, gloves, oxygen tank, chest part, oh and you know, the helmet? The reason they can breathe? Yeah they might need that. So logically, one would wonder what happens when an astronaut takes off their helmet. @scriptastronomer has a great post for you if this is your kind of thing.
Bros Warming Up
Stretching is a seemingly simple activity, but can it be done in groups? Sure, but is it common? Well, @scriptballerina might be able to help you.
Germans So Famous, Schools Are Named After Them (1/10): Die Geschwister Scholl
Hoo boy, this is a doosey of a post. To sum it up, @scriptgerman tells us about the Scholl Siblings and why they were important. Itâs a longer read, but itâs worth your time.
Ask Box Statuses
@scriptshrink âs inbox is currently closed. She thanks you for your patience
New Family
No new family this week, but there surely will be at some time or another.
And thatâs all for this week. See yâall next week. Until then, this is your host signing off.

ScriptX Family Weekly Update
Hey yâall, and welcome back to the weekly update. The fam has had a lot of excellent posts this week, so you should definitely take a look at those especially. Anyways, on to announcements.
Announcements
@scriptsocialwork is still looking for a mod to help with adoption and the foster system. Please contact her via message if you are interested.
Featured Posts
Beauty and the Alien
âBeauty and the Beastâ an old tale of love, romance, forgiveness, Stockholm Syndrome, but thatâs been redone enough times. So instead, what if we took a prisoner, put him on a spaceship, and had an alien try to induce Stockholm Syndrome. Yeah, not exactly a light and happy story idea, but then again the best books have the not so happy scenarios. (@scriptshrink )
Sheltered Life
Your character has finally started the animal shelter of their dreams. Now what? Every job has its quirks, so what problems might a shelter owner encounter? @scriptveterinarian has a couple prompts to think about when the dogs are let out.
Iâm Gonna Steal the Moon
So what would have happened if Gru had actually stolen the moon? Well, grab your surfboards and head to the pawn shop, âcause you arenât using that anymore dude. You may want to use that money to pay for 10% of a plane ticket out of Hawaii cause according to @scriptastronomer , those volcanoes may no longer be your friend.
Low Battery
Your character has to monitor her energy closely. However, she wants to go to the amusement park tomorrow with her friends. How might she make sure she doesnât overextend her energy? @scriptspoonie has some ideas that may help you when youâre writing.
Captain Punisher: The Nerdy Soldier
Soldiers, the buffest of boiz, the toughest of titans, and⌠the coolest of comic readers? Yep. Turns out, soldiers do enjoy their comics, their videogames, their tabletops, all that good stuff. An excellent example of this is the common use of the Punisher skull on their gear. But why do they like the Punisher? @scriptsoldier has a few ideas that may help your writing.
Shady Greens
Karen works in a coffee shop. Itâs a great job, paying pretty well even though most days are pretty slow. Itâs just, something keeps bugging her. Sometimes she gets a look at the books and what sheâs seeing doesnât line up with what sheâs selling. Maybe something shadier is going on that has nothing to do with the storefront. What do you think, @@scriptaccountant ?
Throw A Shrimp on The Barbie
Except donât. @scriptaussie has taken plenty of time to show those of us who donât live down under, so, please. Just, no. They donât say that. Donât use it.
Super School
The voices. They just keep talking. Saying random pointless things that you canât focus anymore. Will they just stop? At least if that one guy could stop thinking that one girl and what- and Iâm gonna stop there. Simply said, being a telepath in school would suck, but would it cause enough problems to warrant special accommodation? @scripteducator gives some insights into what qualifies for special ed and how it is implemented.
Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes
Dancing is an art, but itâs also physically demanding. After a long session, a dancer is going to have some sore spots. So what should a writer keep in mind when their character gets home from practice? @scriptballerina has this covered.
One Hand Band
Gettinâ down and dirty might not be as easy as it used to be when youâve lost part of a limb. When youâre writing your fun scenes, you may need to consider some new challenges your characters will likely face such as asymmetric touching. @scriptkink helped this asker with a soldier whoâs heading into the bedroom for the first time in a while.
Cold-Blooded Community
Reptiles are strange. Like plants, they have unusual reactions to heat and humidity. What would a world filled with humanoid reptiles need to have to survive? @script-a-world has a good answer ready for you to read.
Bright Life
No longer shall fireflies be the only thing in the sky that glows, for behold, the great glow birb, flying high in the night sky shall forever reign as the most magnificent light of the avian kingdom. But hold on, why are the birb frens glowing all of a sudden? Is that even possible? Well, @scriptgenetics says it could work, so might as well give it a shot
Disclaimer: this blog nor any blogs associated with this blog encourage the making glow birbs outside of your fictional writings. Ethics and all that.
Spirited Practice
You may recall a featured post a few weeks ago from @scriptwitchcraft about banishing spirits. Mod T has taken some time and made a kind of prequel post covering the basics of what spirit work is and how your character would perform some of the basic rituals of spirit work. Hopefully, this will be a good starting point for some of your writing.
Quotes
âApparently it's very disturbing to have your eyelids literally pried open.â
-The Librarian ( @scriptlibrarian )
âI am slowly redecorating you.â
-Dr. Ferox ( @scriptveterinarian )
âWe will write the reviews in our tears and seal it with our own hearts.â
-Splat (this blog)
âDrinks the tears, eats the heartsâ
-Para ( @scriptlgbt )

@rayketh has sent us some love recently. Check out the post here
Ask Box Statuses
@scriptveterinarian has an empty ask box. Now is a perfect time to send in your questions and she is now taking requests for masterposts. Check out her ask box here
@scriptaccountant is stuck on mobile, so if you have submitted an ask, you donât need to worry. She will get to it, but just needs some time. She thanks you for your patience.

Note
Do you know anything about cult mentality? I'm trying to write a character who lives in an area HEAVILY influenced by a cult, but he's not under the direct authority of it. If it matters this place is also devoid of outside influences or the rest of the world.
For this post, Iâm turning it over to @scriptlibrarian. Â One of their mods grew up in a cult, and they will be able to answer far better than I can!Â
