A small guide to commissioning artists: how to avoid getting scammed by people who use image generators

Because “Ai-art” is not art and everyone can use image generators for free.

Disclaimer! This post will include generated images which were originally uploaded on DeviantArt and Twitter by people who generated them. Some of these images are of erotic genre but censored out. I beg you, do not bully these people. This post wasn’t written to call anyone out, it was written to help human artists and their potential commissioners. While some of the “Ai-artists” out there may be real scammers, others are not, and I strongly believe that no one should be bullied, doxxed, stalked and no one deserve any threaths over some silly ai-generated pics. And - as always! - scroll down for the short summary.

Commissioning an artist in 2023 may be scary, especially if you are not experienced in working with artists and have a hard time to distinguish artworks from images generated by neural networks. But even now, with the tech evolving and with neural networks generating pics with multiple characters and fan art, there are still quite a few ways to avoid scammers.

The creator you are going to commission must have an established gallery

This doesn’t mean that you should not commission someone who is new to platform, someone who started drawing in 2022 or later or someone who didn’t upload their work online prior. Image generators actually forced some of the artists to remove their work from social networks. In addition, image generators can generate thousands of images within hours, which means that the scammers may have quite a lot of works uploaded. What I mean is that real artists grow. Their skills gets better over time – even if they are already established artists with huge experience. Their artistic approach constantly changes and evolve. It means that if there are hundreds of images in the artist’s gallery but their skill is always the same level and their artistic approach doesn’t change over time – this definitely might be a red flag. As an artist with a tendency to nuke my galleries on certain platforms (such as DeviantArt, VK and ArtStation), if I get asked to provide my commissioners with examples of my early artworks I will do it with no hesitation. 

You need to look through the artist’s gallery and analize their work

Searching for some decent examples on DeviantArt I stumbled upon a gallery which is four weeks old but already has 660+ deviations all of which look the same way in the matter of skill and artistic approach. While stylization may vary from image to image (some of the artworks look like typical anime-styled CG artworks from visual novels and others have semirealistic proportions), the coloring, the “brush” imitation, the textures on the backgrounds are absolutely the same on every image I analized.

There are a lot of images depictinioning conventionally attractive white or sometimes asian girls in this gallery, some of which seem familiar or resemble the characters from various media. Yes, image generators can now generate fan art. But what they can not generate is diversity. There are of course living artists who tend to draw only conventionally attractive white or asian people too, but now when the image generators gain popularity this lack of diversity automatically raise my suspicions. Drawing a crooked nose or dark skin is not hard and living artists who use references rarely fail at it. It’s image generators who fails this task constantly.

Here is an image titled as a commission. The person who uploaded it also have some content under the paywall and I do not see their images being tagged as Ai-generated too.

Remember the golder rule: spotting an Ai-generated image is the same as spotting the evil faerie in a dark folklore tale. Look them in the eyes. Count  their teeth. Look at their hands and count their fingers. Check if they have a shadow and if that shadow is of human form.The devil is in the details.

While this image may appear like a hand-painted artwork of the conventionally attractive girl at the first sight, however it has quite a few clues that may help you to realize that this artist is a scammer and his entire gallery is just a selection of most-decent looking images they managed to generate with neural network. This elven girl is insanely tall, and the shore behind her back, the stones, the grass and the trees are insanely small compared to her. The piece of jewellry is attached to her nips and it’s design makes no sense. What is the gold chain under her breast, which doesn’t seem to be attached to anything? Where does this piece of cloth hang from? Why does her head cast a triangular shadow on her arm?

Many details are easy to be spotted when an image is in high resolution. I do not recommend artists to post their works in high resolution online to avoid feeding the Ai-monster and also to avoid people using your works to produce pirated merch if they draw fan art. Yet in my opinion posting close-ups might become essential - because people who call themselves ai-artists are usually hiding the artifacts under filters and upload their image resized. So yes: avoid commissioning artists, who never post high resolution faces or overuse filters and blur. Because analizing the characters’ faces is now essential.

You may look at this picture and think: how is this possible for a neural network to create such a detailed image and not fail at it (if you also ignore the fact that the girl on the horse doesn’t have legs). Luckily, the person who uploaded it uploaded it in high resolution, so we can zoom in and... yeah.

The artifacts on these evil faeiries’ faces (especially eyes) and their hands speak for themselves.

Image generators have a tendency to either give characters extra fingers, phalanx or nails or hide the hands completely, if the person writing a prompt decide to to so. I do not know whether and how fast will the algorythm learn to generate normal human hands, but for now you should pay attention to these details to spot a generated image.

If you are up to commission an artwork and are in search of an artist who will actually do the job you absolutely must pay attention to small details on their works: the clothing, the jewellry, the tattoos, the anatomy.

While Ai-generated images may appear photorealistic at first sight, the neural network usually misses small details, creates artifacts and makes mistakes if there are too many similar objects or repetative patterns. For example, the infamous MidJourney Party Selfies depicting girls with roughly fifly teeth, extra collarbones and green watercolor spots instead of tattooes (and don’t forget to check the ginger lady’s hand). The hair dissolwing in fabric folds? Image generator. The clothing designs which makes no sence? Image generator. Jewellry dissolwing into character’s hair? Image generator. Moreover the image generators also make mistakes while generating interiors and architecture, since the algorythm is not aware of perspective and space and once again fails either at perspective and object size or with repetative objects and patterns. 

Like this image here: the bed, the window, the picture on the wall. The perspective on this image makes absolutely no sense: two walls and the bed all exist in different dimentions, while the character is once again of enormous height.

If you try to analize the background on this one, I swear, you can go insane. Look at the window and then look on the corner above it. 

There is also another red flag which makes it easy to spot a scammer: dozens of iterations of the same image, which usually happens with people who can’t choose the best image out of the bunch generated with the single prompt.

There are, of course, artists who do series of works, and sometimes these works may have similar ideas and themes, but they hardly ever look this similar to each other: they may differ in angles, poses, character designs and even the artistic approach (lineart, brushes, rendering and etc). The posting time is also important: drawing an actual artwork requires time and effort - for example, I need at least two weeks to finish an artwork with two or three characters and detailed background. So a bunch of ten similar images that are uploaded at the same time it is definitely a red flag. The ai-generated images have a lot of problems with anatomy, details, perspective and other basics human artists have to learn long before they become professionals. All while having glossy semi-realistic render which can only be achieved with years of practice. I’m not saying that there are no living human artists, who may make mistakes (everyone makes mistakes now and then, even the professionals who works in this industry for DECADES) or who choose not to give much thoughts to backgrounds while focusing on characters and rendering (it is okay too), but the combinations of various red flags listed above is something you definitely have to take in account while deciding whether or not you are going to commission an artwork from this creator.

Another example (this person openly admits that they use the images generators for funsies and I did not find him mentioning paywall anywhere). The image generator even imitated the watermark.

Red flags you may spot while working with the chosen artist

Image generators are tricky: they can generate multiple iterations of the same image, imitate WIPs and many more.

First of all, the artist should provide you with WIPs on every stage of work, not when the work is already done. We artists, do it for a reason. We need your feedback constantly, even if you grant us artistic freedom to chose the idea, the character pose, the medium and technique. There are always changes to be made, and we need to make them at proper stage: for example, change the pose or angle of your character while working on a sketch is thousand times easier than to do so while rendering the image. However, the minor changes are usually possible on the later stages (some of artists may require you to pay a small fee of a few bucks, others may not). While the living artists can easily change small details such as the character’s eye color (or other small design changes) not touching the rest of the artwork, image generators simply can not do so not rerendering the whole image. If an artist does not provide you with WIPs or only provide you with them when the work is done, if an artist refuses to make any changes  -  these may be interpreted as red flags. If an artist agrees to make any change, even the drastic ones, at a late stage, when the piece is almost finished - it is a red flag too. Ask for a small change every single time you need one. I know that there are artists out there who prefer to only provide their client with the finished image once it is done, but now when image generators gain populatiry his may be misinterpreted as if you are a scammer.

Here is a good example of image generators generating WIPs for an existing image: it might actually look scary both for many artists and many commissioners.

I know that some of the artists are panicking that the only way to prove that you really did the artwork is a timelapse recording but this method is not for everyone. Not everyone has a setup which allow them to record a timelapse for an every single commission (my laptop will simply explode if I try). Ask your artists which software/setup do they use, ask them whether or not they can provide you with a timelapse video, ask them which brushes do they use. I know that not everyone like sharing info on their pipeline but at this point it is essential to provide your clients with information on the information about your pipeline, tools and software. For example, if your artist works in Procreate (which is available in Ipad) they have all the timelapses recorded automatically. But please, mind that not everyone have such a privilege.

As a commissioner you can ask an artist for screenshots of their workspace with all the interface visible. If they refuse providing you with that or have a hard time answering the questions about the software they use it might be a red flag. I would also suggest you not to force your artist to draw everything on stream, especially if these streams are public, because there are already cases when people took screenshots of the work in progress, used the image to image generator to apply the shiny rendering to it and accused the original artists of plagiarism. It is a risk for artists and it is okay to refuse such a request. You can also ask an artist for .PSD file of the commission, but the artist have a right to refuse sharing it online for copyright-related reasons. The original .PSD file is a best proof of authorship in court for residents of many countries. Artists can still provide you with the resized .psd file with some of the layers merged or with the background/character png with transparent background without putting themselves at risk. Of course there are artists who draw on the single layer - but without a timelapse recorded this may indeed seem suspicious that the artist does not have a .psd file with layers at all. Always ask your artist to provide you with high resolution image when the commission is finished and fully paid for. There are artists who works on smaller canvases, but working on the canvas smaller than 1000px wide might be interpreted as a red flag, since it is easy to hide artifacts on a resized image. I myself prefer working on larger canvases, from 6000 pixels wide to 10000 pixels wide (300 DPI) because I had an experience with printing my images out to sell them at conventions. While I do not sell commissioned works as prints I still give my commissioners a right to print the finished images out for non-commercial purposes. Thus, I always make sure that it is possible to make a wall print of a decent size out of the finished product. Avoid working with platforms which do not support refunds. It must either be a payment system which support sending invoices or an established platform known and used among the art community (patreon, buymeacofee, boosty, Paypal and etc.). Most artists do not do refunds for finished works — which is absolutely a right thing to do - but sometimes an error might occure. I know people who accidentally paid for their commissions twice and the artists still had to do a refund. Yes, you must respect the artists Terms of Service, but ithas nothing to do with unrelyable platforms used to scam people.

To sum it up

Search for an artists with established galleries,which has a believable amount of works and the visible artistic progress/evolution;

Analyze the artist's gallery, carefully inspecting their work for anything that might be interpreted as a red flag. Excessive fingers, crooked hands, broken perspective, clothing designs and jewellry that makes no sense, extra collarbones, lack of diversity, excessive teeth, artifacts in the eye area, interior and architecture elements which makes no sense — all while the images being glossy, fully rendered as if the artist have decades of experience;

Avoid people with too many iterations of the same image in their profile;

Avoid people with too many images being uploaded at the same time (it is okay to upload a bunch of prevoulosly done artworks when you start running your account, but uploading hundrends of images every week for a long period of time is really suspicious);

Ask for constant WIPs. Give feedback at a proper time. See the reaction;

Ask for a small change when the image is almost finished: it is impossible for the image generator to do so without fully rerendering the image, at least for now;

Ask your artist which software and assets do they use;

Ask (if it is possible) for a timelapse recording — either if the commissioned work or at least of one of their previous works (if they had an opportunity to record it before);

Ask your artist for in program screenshots with visible interface and history (if possible);

Ask your artist to show you the layers of the artwork — at least character/background only layers (mind that the background might be less detailed/wonky at the places which usually are hide but the character's figure). Ask for a resized .psd with some of the layers merged or a gif animation of each layer being added on top — this is what I usually do;

Ask for high resolution file of the commissioned image once you paid for it and it is finished. If the artist doesn’t have it and claim to work on the canvas smaller than 1000 px wide and/or claim that they intentionally delete the original file somehow - this may raise suspicions. Of course a person can delete the file accidentally or have their hard drive crushed, but if you have already spotted some red flags while working with this artist it might be a sign of a person trying to scam you too;

Many of the stuff listed above might be interpreted as a red flag , but I strongly advice you not to judge anyone by one or two points from this post. For example, a person can draw on one layer and mess up the perspective on a drawing entirely! However, if you've played a bingo and suddenly won — you have most likely encountered a person who try to fool and scam you;

Avoid working with suspicious payment methods. If you never heard about  a platform before — google it and see whether or not other established artists use it. If not - it might be a scam;

And remember! People may use the images generators for various reasons: for fun, to create references of their characters to later commission reall artists artworks with said character (for example, the art breeder is a useful tool to create arealistic image of the character, even though I find it slightly limiting). Yes, image generators are unethical and trained on copyrighted data, but a person using it may not be aware of this problem. Not every single person who call themselves an “Ai-artist” has malicious plans to scam people or to gain wealth using their funny little tool. Sometimes they do it for fun and do not pretend that it is anything more that a game. Thank you for reading this far and good luck with your commissions!

- Damian got hyperfixated on into the spiderverse and across the spiderverse he forced his whole family to rewatch it with him

- Jason got asked to come over to the manor by one of the siblings and took a sneaky pic of his whole body just to put it in one of those “dance if you love your family” ai dancing thing on tiktok. he never came back to the manor….

- Tim and Damian have this online feud in tiktok where they comment unhinge and insulting comments to their public official account each other but ofc its filtered so it can cross the tos. Damian once commented “I hope to see you hanging in the streets” and almost got banned from tiktok

- whenever any of the fam asks something from Cass that she doesn’t wanna do she goes “sorry I’m mute” (she takes advantage of her not so disability) Stephanie taught her that she said it would be funny. it works sometimes bcs the other was probably too tired to notice or just goes along bcs they think Cass learning gen Z humor is funny.

Hello all! My name is June (she/her) and I am a university student from Hoenn, majoring in pokemon biology and horticulture! I'm currently traveling in order to gain as much knowledge as possible thanks to a scholarship from my uni. I hope to maybe make it as a pokemon professor-- and if not, perhaps open up my own plant + grass type conservatory!

In all honesty I'm pretty new to this whole rotomblr stuff, and I'm not all to osure how to work it that well.. Lotus the Ivsaur

Modest, highly persistent. A water lotus variant Ivysaur with a water/grass typing, and practically my soulmate. My first officially owned pokemon, gotten from my grandmothers venusaur as a child. Lotus has grown and matured with me through the years, and is always looking out for me! Shes trained in battle and performance, but we have since retired from coordinating and she'd rather sit back and experience life as it comes.

Scout the Lopunny

Sassy, likes to fight. One of my first wild-caught pokemon, and both me and Lotus's best friend. Shes quite a fan of my more feminine interests, often asking to share my clothes and music. Shes definitely one of my more battle + performance savvy pokemon, and we're working on learning mega evolution together! She wears a light blue letterman jacket I bought for her once, she wanted to dress similarly to an idol group we saw online once!

Grim the Joltik

Jolly, very finicky. He is literally the sweetest little baby ever. He was an unexpected capture, having hopped onto my phone one day and refusing to leave. He loves to suck out the battery life from practically my devices which drives me insane, but I wouldnt trade him for the world. Despite being small for the past few years, I think he doesnt want to evolve which is fine by me! I think he enjoys riding on my head or shoulder.

Jasper the Typhlosion

Rash, quick to fight. A large, bulky, fluffy, shiny typhlosion with a scar across his muzzle. Rescued from a "backyard zoo" situation, it took a long long time to fully gain his trust, but it was worth it. Hes very standoffish but protective of me and the team. Lotus was a big help in calming him during the beginning, and now he enjoys battling to blow off some steam.

Harlequin the Banette

Quirky, impetuous and silly. Perhaps my first ever pokemon friend. We met when I was a small child and he was still a shuppet. Its a bit of a long story, but he stuck through with me during some negative times within my early years even as a wild pokemon, and would frequently visit to keep me entertained through the years. I didn't catch him for many years, but one day after being a trainer for a while, I asked him if he'd like to join my team and has stuck around since. He wears a chunky bandana on his neck thats practically the size of him.

Jade the Noivern

Adamant, alert to sounds. One of the newer additions to the group, i had caught her within a cave and she showed fighting spirit right off the bat. I took the time to train her in between my studies and she evolved into a speed demon. She absolutely LOVES flying and I myself had always wanted to ride on a flying pokemons back, so its a win-win. She looks up to Jasper, and they often spar together.

I have plenty of other pokemon back at home that I'll introduce when the time comes, but these are the ones I think are best suited to help me during my studies! Perhaps I'll switch around the team, maybe I wont. It takes a while to transfer pokemon across regions but who knows where life will take me!

How to Get Selfship Merch and Art with Low or NO Budget

*Okay, kinda misleading title as many of these are DIY but they can be cheap or free depending what materials you have access to. These are just some basic ideas I hope will inspire people to try their own things.

Things you can get/make for free

Picrew / Dressup games

I’ve seen some couple/romance picrews before!

I don’t always find the options I want in Picrews (ie body type) but you can always edit them using free software like Autodesk sketchbook, gimp, etc

Wallpapers

If your f/o is popular, you might be able to find some good phone/desktop wallpapers by searching online

Edits

There’s free apps for editing selfies where you can put in a photo and add in filters, stickers, etc. (Not my area of expertise, also may not work as well with animated f/o’s)

Free apps for video editing - I see a lot of edits on Youtube and Tiktok for example

Making silly edits where you put your ship into existing memes

Free art?! - Artists doing art requests / free art for experimental purposes

(Search for “art requests: open”, only ask if people offer first)

Free art?! - You can draw whatever you want, whenever you want

Apologies if that sounds condescending, but that’s often the thought that motivates me to draw selfship art when I do. No one can stop me from drawing myself kissing my f/o!

If this is daunting, try breaking it down into smaller steps. Search for tutorials on how to draw your f/o, or how to draw romantic scenes, etc.

Misc arts & crafts!

Whatever you have on hand you could make - especially in your f/o’s colors! Or things you associate with your ship

Sometimes schools and libraries have free events where they let people make things free of charge - check out your local library’s site! They’re always open for feedback, you can email suggestions for events.

I’ve seen events where they let you paint, make friendship bracelets, make buttons with their button machine, etc

For example my uni had a “destress from finals” event where you could make bracelets with plastic beads (like kandi?), and I made one with my friend’s f/o’s name and color scheme. 

Things you can get/make for cheap

Keychains! Get one of those keychains where you can put a photo in, print out or draw a pic of your beloved, and put that bad boy in there

A lil character shrine! It doesn’t have to be huge

A good place to start could be a photo of the character and little trinkets you associate with them. Like an eraser shaped like their favorite animal or a candle in a scent that reminds you of them.

Thank you for even making that post because I honestly feel like I’m going to explode!! Championing every issue is EXHAUSTING. I have such empathy fatigue. Bombardment of “rules”, behavioral guidelines, services, companies, networks + food brands & PEOPLE to boycott ALL THE TIME. Fandom is space many of us come to unplug from reality…it’s certainly my hyperfixation & ppl be like “well then get another one because you shouldn’t support–” IT DOESN’T WORK LIKE THAT. Fuck. I can’t take it anymore. Calls to action being in EVERY single place have weakened my mental state even more than it was before which was already on “pending disability” level of severe & now I’m just. burned t-absolute-f out….at everything!! I can literally FEEL myself unraveling. Kpop stans & their toxic activism can go to hell. They’re so worried about making sure to condemn others for “not doing enough” or being bad people, that they don’t even realize their actions are making them into bad people. This shit takes a toll on mental health, there is science behind this, it is real and what happens to human beings when inundated with constant terrible news, and it’s not just being ~too privileged to care~ but these performative mfs have no concept of blacklisting anymore and just want to assume the absolute worst about someone, call them names & wish harm on folks who are at the end of their ropes! It’s maddening! So even if compassion fatigue isn’t why you didn’t go out of your way to Denounce and Drag™️ him (bc you totally have the right to simply not want to do that on a fanfic blog!) I’m just glad someone else stated that this is supposed to be an ESCAPE. fuck.

Baby, burnout will fuck you up. Don't do that to yourself. Take the time you need and recoup. Life is a constant war and you can afford to lose a battle here and there to focus on your own health and well-being. Getting yourself back into a good place mentally will be a huge win. We both know the ppl obsessed with performative activism aren't doing anything from a place of compassion. The real ones are out there making change, not sending people death threats online from the comfort and safety of their mommy's basement.

When I posted the pic of NCT Dream and Big Time Rush, I wrote in the tags how BTR was something my sister and I loved and bonded over. We watched the show even though it was obviously a kids show and we were both adults. It was just something that gave us joy. My sister passed away years ago and anything BTR-related will make me teary because I think about how much we laughed together over it.

So the first thing I get are messages over how problematic BTR is, that I should delete the post or I'm pro-genocide if I don't dislike them. Ngl that made me so upset because I got a bunch of faceless people trying to taint some precious memories of me and my sister. If they came at me trying to educate me on things I didn't know that would be different, but it's straight to judgment and hatred toward me over something I posted that was totally innocent.

Meanwhile I get criticized for posting about a kpop group instead of reblogging every call to action post. I donate my money to these causes, but I don't post about it because I don't need my ass kissed for doing what I know to be right. I am 1000% sure the anons in my inbox that try to police me have never given a dime to anything, but are policing people's blogs for not reblogging posts or talking about it more.

I feel bad that I haven't been very active on here this year so I try to come on when I have some free time to interact with you guys. I make a silly post about Doyoung and get anons tearing into me for it like I'm his social media manager. Okay so because the world is going to shit we aren't allowed to enjoy anything?? Can't make jokes about anything. Can't show support for anything. Just wrong on every fucking count.

Believe me I am so goddamn aware of how lucky I am that I can sit here and say I'm very privileged that I live comfortably in the life I have. I know what's going on in the world and I do my part to help where I can, but I also have to keep functioning. I don't want every minute of my life to be seeped in anger, I did that for a long time and it not only eats away at you, it makes you ineffective in actually changing the things making you angry in the first place.

This was just supposed to be a blog where I posted my stories. One of the few places I could go and not constantly be reminded of how fucked up the world is. I've always said that people who told me reading a fic of mine made their day a little better or helped them escape for a bit were always my favorite. That was what I came here for and I loved being able to share the tiniest moments of peace and quiet with others through stories with guaranteed happy endings.

I'm frustrated because I have 4 drafts ready to go next year. I got the story posts done and made all the headers. But I don't want to post them. I have no problem admitting I'm selfish and spiteful. Chapter Two

A/n: here’s part 2 to YTW (finally)! Catch up with part 1 here and feel free to let me know what you think :)

You pick your phone up and smirk at Sam’s text, letting it slide back out of your hand onto the cold countertop of your bathroom vanity to continue getting ready.

Don’t text back too quickly, but don’t make him wait too long, you thought. Getting lost in your head for a moment, another text came through to bring you back to reality.

‘Also we’re still good for 7, right? I don’t want to rush you or anything 🤪’

Throwing Annie’s silly texting rules for dating out of your mind, you slide your phone closer to you again and confirm that 7 is perfect. It felt silly worrying about how fast to text back, what emojis to use and not use, and what kind of language to use with Sam. It all just felt so…natural.

After staying up way too late messaging him the first night you matched and then almost all day the following day, it was an easy decision to give him your number when he not-so-smoothly asked. The two of you had been texting for just a few days, but you knew you were on a slight time crunch and getting the first date out of the way was something that needed to happen as soon as possible. If Sam didn’t end up working out as a possible wedding date, you’d need to either get back on the market or accept that you’re attending a wedding solo after sending in your RSVP with a plus one.

Sam was actually the one who brought up the idea of taking you out, stating that the only thing you needed to do was tell him when you were free and then show up to the address he provided. To ease your mind and try to dispel any initial worries that he may just be sending you to a random abandoned parking lot, he did tell you right away that you’d be meeting him at a botanical garden just outside of the city. He offered to pick you up so that you didn’t have to drive yourself over there, but Annie agreed that it would be best for you to drive yourself and meet him there in case he turned out to be a total creep.

Sam texted you the last little detail of the date that you needed to know just a few hours before you’d be meeting him at the garden, keeping the rest a complete secret.

‘By the way, wear something comfortable tonight!! I can send you a pic of what I’m wearing when I get dressed so that you know what to go for if you want 😌’

Not sure what you were getting yourself into when hesitantly agreeing to receive a photo from an -almost- stranger, you were pleasantly surprised with what he sent back just a few minutes later. It was a mirror selfie taken in, what you assumed to be, his sizable walk-in closet. He donned a pair of loose grey pants with white stripes, a basic black tshirt, and simple blue sneakers. You found yourself holding back a smile as you looked over the photo, taking in him as well as his environment. A minute later, another text came in from Sam:

‘Oh and I’m bringing a sweatshirt!’

His energy and clear excitement about the date he had planned was infectious and much different from the men you had gone out with before, who seemed to feel obligated to go out instead of actually wanting to. It was strange, typically you found yourself at least a little nervous and panicky when it came to a first date but with Sam you realized you were actually excited to meet him and spend time with him.

You would never voice these feelings, of course, especially to Annie who insisted on asking for updates at least twice a day since you told her that you and Sam had begun texting. She knew that you had a date with him tonight and that’s all she was going to know about it until you decided to share more.

With the help of Sam’s reference photo, you chose an outfit that made you feel good but was also comfortable enough for whatever he had planned. You had never been to the garden, having looked at it online numerous times after moving to the city but never getting the chance to get over there. It looked beautiful, but you weren’t sure how much there would be to do there at 7pm on a random Friday night. When 6:30 rolled around, you looked in the mirror once more before turning your bathroom light off and grabbing the sweatshirt you had laid on your bed along with your bag, saying a quick goodbye to Annie and heading out the door.

The drive to the garden was rather uneventful, the sun already dipping below the horizon when you arrived and texted Sam where you were parked so that he could find you. Only a moment later you heard a light tap on your window and jumped slightly, looking over to see Sam slightly crouched to give you a smile and wag of his fingers. Again, any anxiety that had creeped in during the drive completely melted away when you saw him, excitedly grabbing your bag from the passenger seat and climbing out of the car.

Sam didn’t think twice before opening his arms and hesitantly going in for a hug, not sure if it was okay with you, which you immediately stepped into to hug him back.

“Hi,” you heard him breathe out before pulling away from you. “I’m glad you found the place, I know it’s a little tucked away back here.”

‘Tucked away’ it was. So much so that you almost drove right past the entrance, which essentially was just a wide gravel road that eventually led to a mansion made of tan stone. Cut into the beautiful mansion were tall white windows, two of which from the upper level held a large white ‘sheet’ against the side of the building. You didn’t think much of it, knowing that you’d enjoy whatever Sam had up his sleeve for the evening.

“It actually wasn’t too bad! It’s my first time here, though, so I’m excited to see what this place is all about.” You smile at him, noting the slight pink of his cheeks and wondering if yours look the same. He was somehow even prettier in person and you tried not to get too flustered.

“Well I’m not sure how much of the grounds we’ll be exploring tonight, but I think you’ll enjoy what we’ve got planned for tonight.” He turned to begin walking towards the mansion in the distance along a dirt walking path lined with tall trees.

“Shall we?” He asked, motioning towards the path and extending his arm in an ‘after you’ gesture.

“We shall!” You try not to show your giddiness as you fall into step with him, conversation slowly freely and easily between the two of you as you get closer to the building. A large banner comes into view just before you reach an opening, ‘Welcome to Movie Night In the Garden!’ written in red letters printed across it.

“Movie night?” You ask, turning slightly to face him. “What movie are we seeing?” A smile spread m across your lips in response to his own as he looked over to gauge your reaction to his little surprise.

“Well, you see, I came across a flier for this event a day after we started talking and after seeing what movie was playing tonight, I knew I had to take you here. It was just too perfect…with you looking for a wedding date and all.”

“Sam!” You giggle, “what movie is it?”

“Uh…27 Dresses?” He responds, a hint of worry that you were about to tell him that you despise the movie evident in his voice. You see him glance over at you to gauge your reaction, but all he’s met with is a smile from you and you can almost feel the relief flood through him.

“Oh, I love that movie!” You assure him, getting close enough to him to playfully bump your shoulder into his while continuing to walk to the makeshift viewing area. “Who doesn’t?”

Finally getting a look at the clearing in front of the mansion that the garden employees turned into a viewing area for the event almost took your breath away. The sun had fully rested for the day during your walk over with Sam and the string lights of pale yellow, strung in a zig-zag pattern across the top of the lawn between bordering trees on either side of the viewing area had been switched on. They did little to illuminate the space, clearly meant to cause little distraction from the movie that would be projected onto the side of the mansion on the giant white sheet that you had noted before.

Blankets were set up around the sizable yard, the plush green grass underneath providing support and comfort to those getting their areas set up for the evening. Young girls and their moms, older friend groups, and even a few couples clearly on a date night just like you were were amongst the dozens of people tossing their blankets on the ground and getting snacks and drinks set up around them.

“Here okay?” Sam asked, motioning to the open space towards the back of the crowd that you had found.

“That’s perfect,” you respond, coming back to the moment after getting lost in observation. You weren’t sure if you were talking about the spot in the grass or the date itself, but either way the statement would be truthful.

Sam lets a tan tote bag slide off his shoulder, which you hadn’t even noticed him holding before, and into the grass softly before crouching down to pull out a deep green blanket with black fringe around the edges, an elegant sun woven onto the material in black. He laid it down carefully, smoothing his large hands over to make sure that it laid just right, and motioned for you to sit.

“Please make yourself comfortable as I prepare our snacks for the evening.”

You take a seat on the blanket, legs folded in front of you, and lean back on your hands to watch Sam pull small containers of miscellaneous snacks out of the tote bag and set them up between the two of you meticulously. A bowl of veggies next to a larger bowl of hummus, individual ziplock bags filled with pre-popped popcorn, a bowl filled with various cheeses and a small cup of honey with, what looked like, dried fruit sprinkled in between, and lastly, chocolate covered strawberries.

“Sam, this is…you didn’t have to do all this for a first date, I would’ve been fine with a snickers bar from the concession stand over there.” You laugh lightly and watch his cheeks turn a light hue of pink again.

“Well I forgot to ask what kind of food you like so I just figured I’d bring a little of everything.” He smiled bashfully at you, nervously picking at the skin around his nails as he settled in next to you on the other side of the spread he just laid out. “Oh! And I dipped the strawberries this morning so I hope they came out okay.”

Just like over text, his excitement about this date was infectious and also evident in the amount of effort that he put in to make sure that things went well. You opened your mouth to tell him that no guy had ever even bought you flowers, let alone dipped strawberries for you for a first date. Just as the words were about to slip past your lips, though, the lights dimmed further and the first frame of the movie was projected onto the white sheet hanging against the mansion as an employee greeted everyone through a microphone.

The movie began to play and you and Sam exchanged small glances and timid smiles every few minutes, though you swore you could feel him looking at you more often than you caught him. Eventually, though, the snacks he brought were effectively picked through and Sam had packed them up to confidently take their place beside you, sitting almost close enough to touch your hip with his. The closer he got, the more your heartbeat quickened and the harder it was to focus on the movie playing in front of you.

Suddenly, you felt his warm fingers brush softly against yours and lay still on top of your hand until Sam got the courage to intertwine his fingers with yours, both of you still looking straight ahead. It didn’t feel awkward, though, like the first time holding hands with someone new typically did. It felt natural, it felt right. As you crossed through to the second half of the film, you let your head fall to rest on his shoulder, padded by his thick sweatshirt adorning a faded Michigan logo.

You didn’t know it, but he almost leaned down and kissed the top of your head because it felt right…but instead he began rubbing the top of your hand gently with his thumb and all you could do was smile.

Thanks to everyone for your support through the past year <3 I can't believe TOH has ended...

Some updates/ personal notes under the cut!! Like, its really personal its almost narcissistic!

PRONOUNS: I go by she/they now!!! I've always had a lowkey gender crisis (fueled by an existential crisis really) so I am FINALLY trying this out. Feel free to refer to me with they/them pronouns :) (I guess I should have seen something coming when I made my first proper OC over a decade ago as an aro ace agender lol)

TOH ENDING: I'm really sad that the owl house is over...but I'm so glad I got to meet so many cool people in the TOH fandom!!! I even had the pleasure of sending a few friends stickers as a small token of appreciation. I'm like super grateful for all the encouragement and notes! I don't talk much here but I do read the reblog tags :) The brainrot was so serious that it made me draw basically everyday the past year (even if its a small doodle) and i really feel like i grew as an artist, and I honed my skills although I still have a long way to go! I can see improvement in my framing and colouring skills :) I think I might do some funny compilation video in the near future...

A BREAK/MINI-HIATUS: I am considering taking a small break from fandom. It might be a few weeks or maybe less, depending on how quickly I get out of this slump. I am guessing its a burn out from all the negative news regarding AI 'art' and being tussled round by the twitter algorithms. Also maybe because i did two epic pieces back to back... I have a lot of ideas and I really don't want to stop posting art online! I want to do sort of a post-WAD/pre-epilogue HW comic series, as well as a grom animatic :)

THANK YOU HUNTLOW ugh they mean so much to me... I know its silly because its a silly little fictional ship. But its really unlocked some creativity in me that I lost? Along with such a lovely community, it has really inspired me to keep drawing! Maybe its a right place at a right time thing, but after watching ASiaS, it gave me brainrot so much that it kicked my other bad habits out the window! I got to do so much cool stuff i always wanted to do including making an animatic, comics, being in a fan zine, epic pieces, making stickers... I can't believe they are canon now its been such a journey to watch this ship and the shippers blossom :)

currently laying in bed sick and figured i’d get some things off my chest

being on tumblr and interacting w ppl on here is strange bc 2023 was the roughest year of my entire life, like no joke. irl and online, i’ve been forced to stay quiet, hidden, and endure being burnt from every possible angle. i’ve gotten out of one toxic cycle barely by the skin of my teeth and the second chance of life i was given would be a wasted if i didn’t change the way i live and think.

this blog used to be a safe haven for me, a place where i could share my writing (which is something I wanted to get back into since falling out of it for years.) i had a huge medical accident, and never got treated properly for it because I couldn’t afford to see a doctor (financial abuse woo!! 😀) and was gaslight to believe certain things weren’t as they seemed, so my health was pushed to the back burner and i had to press on for someone who never even loved me. now that i’m away from that situation, i’ve been trying to not put pressure on myself to write and upload. i see writing as a whole an art and the things i want to create cannot be rushed or mass produced, which is what a lot of younger people are used to and why they’re so rude and demanding requests, why they don’t read rules or respect boundaries, why they say out of pocket shit because they’re used to commenting on their fav creator/celebs pics without repercussions. writers aren’t influencers or content creators — we’re people who do what we love for free. no creators programs to pay us and gives us platforms, no sponsorships, some of us don’t even get tips. when i see mutuals leave certain fandom spaces because of hate, it genuinely makes me sad.

on top of abuse irl, i’ve been getting abused on here as well. internet harassment hardly constitutes as “bullying” in the eyes of some but not to me. this is an especially hard topic for me to talk about, and i can hardly be vague about it because it will kick up a bunch more shit. but if want see the change, i have to speak up. if i want to be comfortable, i first have to get used to be uncomfortable. I never said anything until now, because it’s been dragged out long enough. they’re younger than me and are clearly suffering psychological issues. i for real don’t want them to be hurt. but it’s hard to not notice what they’re doing when they’re doing it. they keep tabs on everything i say and people i talk to, make blogs and remake blogs when I block them. i don’t have definite proof of this part in particular, but i suspect they go around and tell stories about me which makes sense as to why mutuals i’ve made will block/unfollow me out of the blue. (anyone can block who they want for whatever reason they want, but the pattern is there and it’s strange.) i’m sure they’ll try to take this post and create an issue, victimize themselves and change the narrative, but I don’t care anymore. i mentioned no names and i said what i said.

i want my blog back. i want to write my silly fics and stories. i want to be able to support people unapologetically and see all the self ships, say what i want to say and post what i want to post and show ppl that love is everything and there’s no place for hate in 2024. i’ve always been outspoken and called bullshit when i smelled it, and have said whatever has come to my mind. so if there’s anything I’ve ever said that may have offended someone in anyway, i actually truly am sorry and will 100% say it to your face if need be. its easy for me to troll real trolls, and stick up for other people who have a hard time defending themselves. i need to learn how to do the same for myself, and relearn how to take care of myself. i feel more comfortable doing that one step at a time.

You laugh as you look at your phone's notifications. You're seated on the couch in your living room, warm in your sweater and fuzzy socks, and full still from the dinner you and Kuni cooked earlier. Silly as her initial tweet was, Lumine is right: this happens every year when Kuni visits you for Lantern Rite. Like clockwork, the moment he's seen at the airport beside you, photos and rumors begin circulating online; and like always, you both ignore and deny the dating rumors. But this year you stirred the pot yourself, so to speak - and this way, it's clear to fans and the media both that you're aware of the situation, and that you know how to handle it light-heartedly. Beside you, Kunikuzushi lets out what almost sounds like a grumble as his phone buzzes for what must be the upteenth time tonight. "You couldn't have waited for me to warn my PR team?" He asks this with a stoic face, but there's no real bite in his voice. He shoots a text to someone (probably his manager Jean - just to assure her that yes, you and he are still "just friends") - and then shoves his phone into his pocket, and promptly stretches himself out on the couch, using your lap like a footrest. "Put these away," you joke, poking at his socks, but he merely arches a brow at you. "If you don't, I'm snapping pics and selling them online. Your 5wirls will go crazy."

Kuni rolls his eyes.

"I'm wearing socks, nobody would buy them. And aren't you my #1 5wirlie?" he reminds you. "So wouldn't that include you?"

"I've seen your toes for free since third grade. So I don't count." You shove his feet off your lap, but he only shoves them under your thighs instead. You shoot a playful glare at him. "They aren't even that pretty."

He lets out an amused scoff.

"Wow, when did you become such a toe connoisseur?"

Now it's your turn to scoff. "Okay, listen... I didn't mean it that way."

"Sure."

"Shut up."

Your eyes meet, and you stay comfortably like that for a little while, simply staring into each other's eyes. His are a very unique shade of blue, almost a light purple in the right lighting. Like right now -- in the ambiance of your living room, lit up only by the lamp in the far corner, and bathed in moonlight besides that, they're a soft lilac shade that reminds you of midnight glaze lilies.

He is the first one to break away. He sticks his tongue out at you and then turns his head towards the window across the room. You lean back against the soft plushness of the cushions and start aimlessly scrolling through your social media accounts, ignoring the constant notifications popping up.

"I've been thinking..." He starts.

"Must be hard for you," you say with mock sympathy. He kicks you lightly.

"I've been thinking about my future," he says. You blink, and take a better look at his face. The expression he's wearing... It's a little wistful, and his brow is furrowed. You realize this is something he must have been giving a lot of thought lately, so you silence your phone and put it down beside you.

"Sorry for teasing you," you apologize gently. "Go on."

He waits for a few moments, watching the branches on the tree outside sway in the breeze against the backdrop of the night sky, before finally speaking again.

"I don't have any interest in a college degree, unlike some of my bandmates," he said. "But when 4nemo breaks up someday... What do I want to do after that?" He shakes his head. "I haven't had an answer to that for a long time."

Your breath hitches. "So... Are you saying you don't want to continue singing if that happens?"

He turns and looks at you with an inscrutable expression on his face. You almost want to squirm under his gaze, it's so intense.

"I didn't say that," he says slowly. Your heart beats quicker, relief pouring through your veins in spite of yourself -- and when he pulls his feet back and sits up, you do, too, putting your hands in your lap. "I know what I want. Or, at least, what I want to do next."

You tilt your head, urging him to continue. His eyes follow the movement.

"I promised I'd write a song someday," he says. "But I'll do better than that, because I can. I'm going to release an album."

You feel your heart in your throat now, and your eyes widen.

"A solo album?" You ask, and you can't keep the excitement from trickling into your voice when he nods. Kuni picks up on it (because of course he does) and smirks at you.

"You can do lyric work on the next one," he promises. "I know that's what you're studying for, anyways."

You feel your eyes bugging out of your head -- Next one, there's gonna be a next one?? you think wildly -- but you catch the unmistakable drawl at the end of his sentence.

"But...?" you prompt him.

"But," he says, looking into your eyes, "This one is all me. I'm going to say what I've always wanted to. So... Don't look away, okay?"

You open your mouth to speak, but just then, his phone rings. You purse your lips; Kuni actually groans as he pulls the phone from his pocket.

"Great timing, Jean..." he mumbles sarcastically. He answers, and moves to stand and take the call in another room, but you reach out and tug on the bottom of his long-sleeved sweatshirt. He stops and looks at you.

"I won't," you promise. "I won't look away. And sign my copy first!"

He huffs, but his lips tug upwards into the smallest of smiles. He then walks away, muttering into his phone in soft tones to not disturb others in the house, leaving you to sit and process the news.

A solo album.... His first solo album... Wow. And he told you first. (Maybe he's talked about it with his fellow 4nemo members, you think - but then you remember the intensity of his gaze, and know without a shadow of a doubt that he wouldn't have. This was personal to him.)

You wonder now, as you turn to face the window, watching the branches sway outside -- with the flickering of a bygone image teasing at the edges of your memory -- if he knows just how much his words means to you.

i'm a 4'11 female with long black hair and dark brown eyes. being comfortable in my body has been a journey tbh but i'm really liking my smile recently: i have a smattering of dimples on my cheeks which i feel makes me stand out! i have horrible eyesight so i wear thick glasses (this year it's been round purple ones). my style is usually pretty casual (comfy over any other aesthetic haha) but occasionally i'll put on a cuter outfit if i'm going out with a friend or have another more formal event.

i'd consider myself an ambivert because i love making friends, but am often the quietest person in the group. i try my best to be kind and empathetic towards everyone (which can lead to me becoming more of a doormat than i'd like haha). i can be a sensitive soul and really appreciate the people in my life that take the time to listen to me and talk through things that make me emotional.

i'm a huge writer and reader and am looking at ways to pursue that in the professional world. i listen to a lot of music all the time (kpop, western singer-songwriters, and indie/alt pop are my go-tos!). i got into scrapbooking and bracelet-making last year so i have a lot of those materials lying around. i love connecting with people online and in person: sometimes not the best at responding but i think of so many people fondly anyway :)

I think one of his favorite things about you would be your creativity. He loves that you enjoy things like writing and reading and just overall, having creative hobbies and interest.

What happens when you're hyperfixating on Elder Scrolls Online (specifically your VestigexCanon ship) and Slay the Princess at the same time? Why you mash em together of course!

So yeah, long story short, I did some trace-overs of Slay the Princess screenshots with my character Lytta as The Princess. A lot of this was also just general practice because I'm trying to learn how to do actual art. (Fun fact, I had to go back halfway through this project and change the shading because I finally started shading like a normal person.)

(Tbh the Thorn's was the only one I actually bothered with the background on. The others were just kinda me being lazy.)
