We'll Take a Cup of Kindness Yet by dueltastic, Aberforth/Minerva/Severus, balanced between a triangle and a threesome, 20K

Among those who have read her work, Dueltastic is celebrated for her astute, dry wit, appreciation for unsentimental and highly competent characters, and incisive storytelling. The prose is chiseled, lean and quick as a greyhound, emotionally sharp but not dramatic, and flavored with a humane, unfailing sense of humor. This fic follows the aftermath of the Battle of Hogwarts as filtered through the earthy, ironic sensibilities of Aberforth Dumbledore, aspiring bedwarmer of Minerva McGonagall, and witness to the secret she struggles to keep. The characterizations are marvelous, the chemistry abundant, and the feelings, although tightly reined in, are precisely detailed in pointed remarks and large-hearted acts of care. We have a very ill Snape, a Minerva at the end of her tether, and a shrewdly observant Aberforth who steps in where he's needed. This is what a love story between undemonstrative, deeply feeling adults looks like. (Hot tip: everything Dueltastic has written is worth reading.)

I've grouped these three short fics together because, while written over the course of three years, they're all set in the same AU. These are basically gen fics, glimpses into Severus Snape's impoverished childhood, departing from canon to give him a beleaguered but essentially loving family, a mother hounded by the unforgiving Ministry and a father helpless to keep them safe. There is also, on his mother's side, the heritage of an older, darker magic, a rather terrifying and implacable connection to ancient forces impossible for those of Prince blood to escape. The wizarding world looks very different from this point of view; Severus and his mum are persecuted by the Ministry, constantly under suspicion, and beholden to almost mythic powers that care little for their well-being or their survival in a hostile environment. The stories also shine a light on Severus's friendship with Lily, and the second fic follows them on a late evening detention in the Forbidden Forest that turns suddenly into a snow-bound nightmare. We get to see Lily's fierceness and the close bond between the two children - a bond that has snapped in the third fic, which shows the Ministry playing games with Eileen's life and Severus navigating his choices as an isolated teenager loyal to his mother, forced to grow up too fast, and trying to protect his sense of self while trapped in a game of fate he can't possibly win. He's nearly killed by an IRA bomb; has a reckoning with his mum; and tests himself against a succubus, alone in the dark. The prose style and the storytelling are beautiful and quiet, magical and real. The first story has a darkly luminous ending, but all three are haunting, and the characters who come and go are vivid, even the cameos. But Severus is the beating heart of these stories, and Duniazade will make you ache for him.

Albus Severus Potter Facts

- Is a lot smarter than people think. Not the best at actual practical spell magic like DADA but he could recite the whole history of magic textbooks and is amazing at potions.

- Absolutely hates quidditch and only goes to watch it to support his friends and family (has been known to sneak back to the castle in the middle of the games)

- Not as good at hiding his emotions as he thinks he is.

- Got caught getting steamy with Scorpius in various little closets so much Hogwarts implemented a new security system.

- Gay. Gay. Gay. Gay. Gay.

- Received a total of 4 howlers in his time at Hogwarts.

- Was very close to being sorted into Ravenclaw. The Hat knew that even with his pleading, his heart wasn’t truly set on being in Gryffindor but Ravenclaw would have also been a good fit.

- Holds the record for most amount of times to sneak into the forbidden forest without getting caught

- Sarcasm personified.

The meaning of mistletoe by Endrina, first volume of The secret language of plants. @llendrinall I have read this charming story several times. The voice of the narration, with its fairy tale reminiscence, is something I really like. Endrina is a great author, it is worth reading their novel length fics.

What I like:

It's quite a simple binding, but something in it remind me of the old editions of my childhood. Reading it give me a special kind of joy, it's both, the comfort of this story and the childhood-like feeling this tome brings me while holding it

What I could do better:

I had problems with the guillotining of the edges, but went ahead [I had already lost a lot of material with a failed first printing]. I couldn't say what happened, but - for me - that mistake gives a Je ne sais quoi to the edition that I love. I don't know why, but when I was a child, back in the 70's, I had many books with the same feeling. The paper was a bit thicker than usual, and the edges weren't perfectly cut. I didn't realize, until I sat down to read this edition, that this binding conjures up memories of my childhood.

Featuring: Snape's POV. People making decisions for Harry without talking to him about it first. The Horcrux in his head influencing Harry's mind. Professional psychologists/mind healers doing good work. Snape using cannibus. He would not go back to Privet Drive without bringing the law. He’d lose his temper and end up in Azkaban. Even with aurors at his back, he was likely to hex dear old Tuney into next week if he had to interact with her again. The fines would be worth it.

Rec: canon compliant Lily character studies are one of my favorite 'types' of fic to hoard. unsurprisingly most of them are Jily -- but dysfunctional Sev & Lily is fun to read about too, especially when written as well as here! I thought this fic did a great job of depicting the unhealthy behaviors that both of them exhibit and excuse in and with each other, no thanks to their less-than-ideal home and school situations. of conveying that they do only have each other, in this crumbling muggle town.

Vibe - Feel good with a happy ending. BANTER!!!!

Author's summary - It's been a few months since Minerva's retirement, and she'd promised Wil a dinner out. Before she knows it, friends start turning up on her doorstep and then at the pub, not least among them a certain spy who came in from the cold.

Rec - READ THIS! The longest fic of the fest iirc. But also the best! My favorite fic of 2023 so far!! Don't miss this fic! I love literally everything about it. The prose, the really sharp banter, the characterizations, the dynamics of their relationships. A lot of times we get to see the postwar setting when stuff is really raw or when they sort of got over it. This fic has a really low stakes premise of a retirement party but the undercurrents of their history/war is super present. The writing has this really precise balance where it feels light but it is at the same time dealing with tons and tons of complicated PTSD and messy baggage. ALSO SNARRY! Technically background Snarry but not really. It's right in your face. McGonagall's face I mean! :D :D ALSO THE BANTER! Sorry but not sorry! This is an ALL CAPS SCREAMING fic. Some real Seinfeld moments with the sharp banter.

Wil wasn't a smirker, but it was a near thing. "Not that our dear old Skunk isn't capable of riding a bucking broom into the nearest cloud all on his own, but I did put the wind up his bristles. The therapeutic effects of working with the herd get raised now and then when we're out on the hillside and Severus is in a receptive mood. Author's Summary - Phineas revisits the question of legacy.

Rec - a solid premise of Found Family with a twist like A Christmas Carol. Phineas thinks his legacy is over because Sirius is dead. But he starts to accept legacy isn't about blood and "adopts" Snape. I mean. Sort of. Technically he saves Snape. I mean. It's complicated! Read it read it read it!!!! OMG!!!! It's a beautiful and eerie fic with lots of unforgivable magic which you forgive anyway because the motive is love. Also lots of gender. Definitely be careful with this fic if you have some gender dysphoria. It has a lot of detach/remove and some really clever techniques to kind of abstract the harder stuff so it doesn't feel dysphoric but these things can be YMMV. Phineas POV! He is super hard to sympathize with because he's pretty much into the purity thing. But you can definitely see where he is coming from and why/how he changes. ALSO SNARRY PRESLASH??

Rec note - So this fic has some serious Giger vibes. Giger designed the chestburster Alien in the Alien franchise. A strange combo of gender imagery.

Rec - Hardcore Snape fam angst. Really brilliant/sharp Eileen characterization. Love the character study. Also really loved the world building in the fic! Shortfic but does a lot with the word count! It's going to break your heart.

Rec - I don't want to spoil the fic because the suspense is a big part of this fic. It's a brilliant Snape POV fic with super sharp characterization of Eileen and her relationship with her son. Heartbreaking. But ofc it's Snape. That's his thing!

People spoke of Emma like they did the myths and legends in his bedtime stories. It was almost jarring to realize that she wasn’t just the baby carved from bronze - the statue Gran took him to see when he was four years old when he’d started asking questions about his own parents. The one where she was cradled in her parents' heroic arms in front of the ruins of their home with bouquets in various stages of decay scattered at their feet. He remembered staring at the baby while clasping his Gran’s hand very tightly, wondering how that little thing had saved the world. He remembered feeling sad for her, because she had lost her parents, and he sort of knew what that was like.  “Where is she now?” he had asked while standing there. “Somewhere safe,” she assured him. 

Summary:

Emma Potter - The Girl Who Lived - finds herself rescued from the Dursleys by an unexpected saviour: Severus Snape, a man tormented by his past mistakes yet resentful of what he must do to atone for them.

A Snippet of my Severus Gen fic

“I need to speak to the boy, Poppy.” Severus heard a voice disturb his sleep.

“Not right now you aren’t. He’s still asleep and I haven’t told him yet. He needs time to recuperate.” The harsh whisper of his godmother woke him.

“What he knows could be critical to winning the war.” Severus kept his eyes closed and listened in.

“Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore! Do not make me throw you out.” Poppy hissed.

He was shocked. It was the first time he had heard his godmother speak disrespectfully to anyone.

“At least tell the boy to visit my office when he leaves the hospital wing.” Dumbledore sighed in defeat.

He rolled over once he heard the doors open and close. He saw Poppy sitting on a chair next to his bed. She gave him a knowing look.

“How much did you hear?” She offered him a glass of water.

He sat up and took it. “Thanks, and enough to know that he wants to speak with me.”

She tapped his arm in a comforting manner and took the cup. “Ignore him and worry about yourself. There is something I did not mention yesterday that is important to your future.”

“What is it? Tell me quickly before I start worrying that it is something awful.” Severus felt his hands start trembling.

Poppy held his hands and looked him in the eyes. “You miraculously survived the attack because your magic took the brunt of the curses. You no longer have the ability to access your magical core.”

He stopped breathing. All noise ended. The warmth of the sunlight coming through the windows became excruciating. His body was trembling. His stomach began cramping. He was going to throw up. He heard screaming. Who was screaming?

Oh. It’s his screams.

Things I love about this: Ed being passionate about learning, teaching, and helping. World building I didn't expect. Magic system building that I am so behind. Low stress read with the same high stakes HP has always had.

Nicknames

James - When he was younger he either got called James or sometimes Jamie by his family. Once he started Hogwarts he wanted to try and separate himself from his grandfather and preferred to be called Jimmy/ Jamie or Jay.

Albus - Albus actually preferred to be called Albus but everyone usually ignored his preference and calls him Al anyway. Some of his closer friends and family call him Albie, which again, he hates.

Lily - She usually went by Lily or Lils but Harry called her Lily-Lou which she pretended to hate but secretly liked even though Teddy, James and Albus would tease her for it.

Teddy - Teddy’s a nickname anyway but some people would call him Ted and James called him Tedward from time to time. Only his Nan would ever call him Edward and that was when he was in serious trouble.

Victoire - She preferred Vic, hated Vicky and could just about deal with Toy (Dom and Louis and most of the other cousins couldn’t pronounce Victoire when they were little).

Dominique- Went by Dom since they started Hogwarts. They hated Dominique and it was very rare someone would use their full name but god help them if they did.

Louis - Didn’t mind Louis or Lou. Would hate it when people pronounced his name as “Lewis” but he would never correct them either so.

Rose - Her name is Rose and that’s that. She doesn’t like nicknames but just about allows Rosie by some of her family (her parents, grandparents and aunties and uncles).

Hugo - Honestly, he’ll answer to any Weasley name. He looks the most typically “Weasley” out of everyone so Ron, Charlie, Bill, Percy, Fred, George and sometimes even Ginny have all been used at one point or another by professors at Hogwarts. He’s just used to it by now.

Roxanne - Preferred to be called Rox or Roxie but she was quite easy going about it.

Fred - People usually called him Freddie, which he was cool with. Unlike some of his cousins, he loved being named after a family member, especially Fred. He knew how much it meant to his dad and he felt honoured to have Fred’s name.

Molly - Hated being called anything other than Molly but on the rare occasion someone called her Mol or Mols she would be quick to correct them. She did ease up on it the older she got though.

Lucy - Most of her friends and family called her Lu but she didn’t care if you called her Lucy or Lou. Just please don’t call her Lulu because that is foul.

Scorpius - He doesn’t like his name to be honest. He prefers to be called Scorp because at least it’s a bit shorter. Also hates it when people call him Malfoy.

Alice - Most people called her Ali and she hated it, but she would never correct them when she was younger. Once she was older and learnt to speak up people quickly started calling her Alice again.

Frank - Usually just got called Frank. Alice and some of his close friends called him Frankie but he didn’t mind.

And maybe, what if Petunia Dursley, due to her connection to the Boy Who Used To Lived, was the only hope for the world's survival? And what should Hestia Jones - Petunia's bodyguard assigned by the Order of Phoenix - do to persuade her ward to save the world, as well as find a way to defeat the Dark Lords now that the Savior of the Wizarding World was gone? All in all, it's a very messy story.

Like the summary says, it's a very messy story. The weirdest story I have ever written, which even weird me out. Here is a little admission: the reaction I was aiming for when I wrote this is "What the heck?!". So if you feel like that, I will count it as my success.

Severus Snape desperately wanted to stick to the plan:

1. Get to Hogwarts. 2. Be sorted into Slytherin with Lily. 3. Become the wizard he was always meant to be.

But things go sideways when Lily is sorted into Gryffindor. And Severus? He throws the plan away.

In which Severus is a Gryffindor, Lupin is hiding something, Potter and Black are the worst, and there's a Wizarding War about to erupt.

Thoughts: I cannot explain to you all just how much I love this fic. The characterizations, the hijinks and shenanigans, the friendship building and just character growth. It's brilliant.

A few years ago I read this really weird fic. It was endgame Jily so I was really excited about it but then they DIED. And everyone thought Sirius was responsible so he went to jail even though we all know Sirius and James are too codependent for Sirius to have helped in his murder.

Marlene and Mary are mentioned maybe twice, Jegulus never happens and you think that there’s Wolfstar but this Sirius gets killed by BELLATRIX and like a year later Remus marries Andromeda’s daughter! That was weird.

Dorcas, Pandora, and Evan are only briefly mentioned too. That means that there’s no Dorlene which was a nightmare. They let Snape be a teacher which was a horrible idea. Also Regulus is literally drowned and then completely forgotten about which was wild.

Barty is actually in it a bit but most of that is while he’s using poly juice to look like mad-eye? Like babes that’s the guy who killed your bf what were you thinking? Also Barty is mildly evil and kills his dad and he also helps torture Alice and Frank into insanity. So yeah.

It was a next gen fic so the main character was James and Lily’s son.

Overall it was just a bit of a stretch for me

Also Peter was evil.
