Okay here’s my thoughts/HC on Batfam ethnicity and religion BUT I wanna know your thoughts on it:

Bruce is white/Ashkenazi Jewish. Thomas and Martha were Jewish, and while they weren’t like super religious they still celebrated the holidays and did all that. Bruce is an atheist now, but he still celebrates some of the holidays.

Dick is ancestrally Mediterranean (not opposed to the idea of him being Romani but idk anything abt them so idk the vibes) but he has very few features suggesting that.

Jason is white. (Personally hate hc he’s Latino bc like that man is WHITE) and his mom was raised catholic, so sometimes on Christmas she’d take him to church. He’s not religious, but his beliefs still align with it iykwim

Tim ofc is just plain paper white

Damian is very much middle eastern, however he’s got Bruce’s curly Jewish hair. He’s familiar with the Koran and general Islamic beliefs but is atheist like Talia.

Steph is white but was raised around a bunch of different people/cultures so while she isn’t religious her idea of it is very mixed.

Cass ofc is Chinese but also has some slight Indian. she’s very much an atheist now with Bruce, but to me David isn’t religious but very much had Christian beliefs abt god n stuff, so it’s something that’s influenced her view on religion even w/out being Christian

Duke is Dominican/African-American mix

Babs is white but love the idea of her mom being from the UK.

Louis <3 I think this is an affect of how likable and overtly sympathetic he is in the amc show but I've seen people getting genuinely offended over Louis being described in fandom (and by Anne rice herself) as a manipulative cold hearted ass who uses his perceived vulnerability and gentleness to distract from the fact that he is just as cruel if not crueler then the other vampires. Like Louis does nottt have strong morals or high empathy lmao. Book Louis weaponizes his privilege like a white woman crying to self victimize into making the other vampires look worse them him 😭 . He refuses to kill humans for a while not bcus it hurts him to take life (he actually takes more pleasure in it then most), he refuses bcus he has catholic brain the way a christians who say "how do atheists have morals without god?" do, misunderstanding that most people actually care about other people and dont need an existential threat to encourage them not to hurt others.

His moral compass is self centered and based in up keeping the appearance of self restraint and monk style lack of enjoying himself, not empathy. If a vampire killed u would u feel better if u knew he cried over how much he got off on it then flaunted his suffering over how little he indulged so that everyone knew how piosis he was 😭.

He is way worse when it comes to how he treats his victims then Armand who intentionally seeks out victims who r asking to die or Lestat who tries the vigilante approach. Louis kills innocents and he thinks it makes him better cuz he only does it sometimes and he feels really really bad about himself afterwards. As akasha said (paraphrased) he's the most predatory of them all.

To specify I love book Louis SOOOO much I love how shitty he is that's why it makes me sad when people mischaracterize him as sincere and get gen mad when ppl characterize him how he is in canon (a lying selfish bitch bless his heart). Like ik amc Louis at this point in canon is unambiguously in the right but he isn't like an accurate reflection of how he is in the books 😭 it's not like amc did what anne rice was trying to do more successfully, they just nulled what anne rice was doing in favor of a more likable protagonist. Which is fine, but like, there's no crime in preferring evil to the core horrible asshole Louis of the books.

💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?

I think the common fandom perception of Armand as the crazy unhinged "omg I can't believe he actually did that in the books??" sadistic maniac villain guy is funny but not really accurate. Armand explicitly not only tries to avoid violence but dislikes it and finds it hard to comprehend why someone would seek out violence and conflict.

The reason he is always doing fucked up shit isn't out of a lestat-esc desire to cause chaos, it's bcus his highly strung ptsd brain has him convinced that the world is a battle ground and he must always be defending himself and acting out in violence.

Since acting out in violence is a reaction hes been taught throughout his life to be standard and necessary, as violence is something so normalized to him he considers it more of a tedious chore then a last resort measure, he usually reacts to conflict in ways that are objectively extreme to anyone who isn't thinking from his perspective. In qotd he even asks Daniel why men choose to fight in wars, explaining that he doesn't understand the draw of violence (bcus he's not a man) and he can't comprehend the supposed thrill of it.

Only to a degree, I think Lestat is hot and deserves the hype, but i also think he's hot in a different way then a chunk of the fandom does. Based on his book description he's kind of wonky looking, mouth too big for his face, vaguely unnerving shallow pale skin, starved 1700s peasant build but also kind of buff in the unhealthy "i dont eat regularly but I'm strong enough to carry a wolf for miles on my back" sense, weirdly small fucking feet. He def has creepy ass florescent blue doll eyes too. my point is I think when drooling over Lestat the fandom tends to forget this wonkiness in favor of blonde bombshell, Sam Reid chizzled jawline and abs, or conventionally beautiful anime twink, when they should be appreciating lestat in all his weird as shit glory.

I’m an atheist but I was raised and baptized Catholic. My moms side of the family is pretty religious but not like- disown for having your own beliefs and identity (they chill with me being atheist and also trans btw). Anyways this was a couple months ago. I was at my aunts house with my parents and my cousin (aunts daughter). And I mentioned I was taking a class in religion and while I was doing research for something I stumbled across an article saying gods kill count. So I did more research on it and in the Bible he killed a little less than 3 million people (confirmed) but it’s estimated to be around 25 million because of things like the great flood and other major events.

Well i was telling this to them and how God killed 25 million people while Satan only killed 10 yet God is the Savior. My aunt got PISSED and said I was lying and that I should keep gods name out of my mouth especially since I don’t worship him. I explained that I was just telling them what I learned for my assignment and that they literally asked- my parents and cousin were actually interested in what I was talking about too-

speaking personally as a Muslim it is EXTREMELY common for people to equate Islam and Christianity as both inherently oppressive. and I am not an idiot, there ARE theocratic governments that base their structures on Sharia law and those are undeniably corrupt (the way that any theocratic authoritarian government would be regardless of religion, but I digress because clearly y’all are not ready for that kind of conversation), but it has become more and more apparent to me that the only people who actually seem to understand what Islam is and what it values - are Muslims. and none of you will fucking listen to us.

having religious trauma, being part of a religious minority, whatever it may be - it does not automatically give you the stand to talk shit about Islam like you know anything. did you know that Islam supports abortion? that Islam, at its origins, is not homophobic or transphobic? do you know how Islam got twisted through theocracies and politicians to become something it is not? or do you just know the end result - do you only recognize a Muslim person if you see hijab, or if you see a war torn country? 

I’m so fucking tired of how Muslims are treated in this goddamn country. i have had to argue and fight with friends (WHO ARE OF COLOR AND OF MINORITY RELIGIOUS BACKGROUNDS AND OR ARE ATHEIST BTW.) to get them to stop praising men who caused my country to get genocided over in front of me. To stop telling me that I was basically white as if my grandfather did not get sent to an Iraqi prison for being on the wrong side of the political spectrum only for my fucking father to come to this country and have nobody bother to learn his name. Muslims are being killed & my country is fucking DYING my country has BEEN DYING.

this is going to be basically an “how to make ur jewish character a normal person with a cohesive background” bc I’m doing it rn and have noticed that a lot of gentile writers don’t really pay attention to the details and differences between communities :3

so I’m writing series of jewish!mcr fics now, right ?? so the first order of business was to figure out what kind of jew they’ll each be, which was actually kinda hard - like I need to make sure I make them part of communities I know well enough to represent well, right ?? anyways it ended up being not that bad, since I know plenty of Italian/greek jews and South American jews to represent at least half well (btw that would make them all sephardi, despite the majority of east coast jews being ashkenazi).

then, it’s to time to decide where they fall on the religious spectrum !! contrary to popular belief, u can be jewish and an atheist at the same time, bc judaism is an ethnoreligion - but u can obvi be super devout and religious, so what kind of beliefs can ur jewish character possess ??

the spectrum is as follows:

atheist — secular — traditional — religious — ultra orthodox (haredi)

for the purpose of my fic, and in light of the members’ actual upbringing, they all fall within the “traditional” category, with a quite religious upbringing (so for example, bc frank went to catholic school his jewish version went to little yeshiva (but didn’t go to the big yeshiva, he’s too cool for that)). pay attention to the way ur jew interacts with tradition and scripture - most jews celebrate every holiday and observe Yom Kippur, but only from traditional and futher on the religious side keep the shabbat and strict kashrut laws.

up next, how do they interact with their community ?? do they go to their synagogue ?? do they participate in purim parties ?? do they have an elaborate or small Seder ?? do they eat cheese on Hanukkah ?? do they avoid kitniyot on Passover ?? etc. etc.

these questions can be helped by the prior aspects of their jewish identity - community, denomination, level of religious devotion :) it helps guide u in what they can and can’t eat, when they dress up, when they invite all their friends and family over to show them their culture - and develop story beats accordingly !!

make sure that ur jew dresses up for holidays (chag/chagim) and shabbat !! it’s quite important to most jews to wear their “Sunday best” in holy days like that :3
