Yesterday I had a rough little day and just needed some comfort food, and in the neighborhood I just moved into has a vegan fast food joint within walking distance, so I trotted down there.
And I found the guy staffing it sitting at a table and repairing some overalls! Full hand stitching with a sign up that said "closed for food restock and employee break till x time" which I honestly loved to see. I'm glad he got a break, and was doing something so cool with it!
I came back when it was open and I got to see that the "food restock" was a guy from the grocery store a block away hand delivering the produce, and they seemed like actual buddies as they did the deal.
Once I ordered, I sat and talked with this older woman in the neighborhood about how annoying people driving cars on the street were, and she was absolutely hilarious, then I had a vegan chopped cheese, grilled cheese, and milkshake, and it was phenomenal.
It was a nice microcosm sustainability moment. Everyone walked, I felt like I was in a community, and the food was fantastic. Great little moment that gave me an extra boost today.

the universe said 'oh great you got your mojo back? let's break a few things' so bad news is our washer and dryer died the same day. good news is we got family assistance to purchase a washer and dryer that is better suited to me and hubs disabilities. bad news is we need to make room for it.
needless to say, i am friggin' exhausted and all i want to do is go outside and just ✨️be✨️. do the things i want to do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i shared photos of my garden going 🌱 au naturale 🌱 to @sagescented (outdoor garden mind you geez) and it identified like 5 bajillion plants i have growing - including wild geraniums! like... EVERYWHERE!! and today, after ripping out some drywall in the bathroom to make room for the new washer/dryer i just needed that outdoor fresh air break. i did a smol little walk around a lo and behold!!
Tumblr media
✨️ wild geranium seeds! ✨️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so i ran inside and grabbed a jar to pick some. then the sun came out and i hissed and went back inside. it seems as though they are the jumping kind of seeds - where the second they are ripe they pounce out. therefore i harvested pods that are borderline ripe, and then topped the jar with fabric and elastic to let them finish drying out. will be a lot of chaff to process from them, but should be worth. with this first batch i will do a germ test and then make seed packages for them and offer for both sale and for free swapping.
a TON more pods are like halfway through ripening stage so hopefully by the time the new wssher/dryer has arrived those will be ready to harvest. something to look forward to.

do you think solarpunk is an actual political philosophy and not just an aesthetic? (not meant to be accusatory)
Tbh I learned about the aesthetic after learning about the political orientation! Like I wasn’t aware of it as a genre until later. So definitely!
Is it primarily used as an aesthetic for fiction now, rather than an axis of action? Well, yes. But that doesn’t take away from those of us who do orient our actions that way. Some great examples of folks I follow here doing such things are @solarpunkani and @justalittlesolarpunk!
Now, I’d LIKE to be a solarpunk, but…I don’t think I qualify. I’m very much a beginner and my lifestyle isn’t great for the climate. I travel a lot, shop online, buy unnecessary things, don’t have a compost, and eat a lot of foods that come in single use plastics. That said—I definitley have made changes since trying to become solarpunk!
I thrift more and have learned to sew, crochet, and darn, even if I rarely use those skills. My most recent cosplay I bought nothing new for! I’ve started actively turning down when people offer me rides to take public transit (not every time but often), and I have plants in my room now. I started a little free zine library for my dorm community and donated a bunch of toys I’d bought for gifts to a little free library at a K-8 school. I painted over a wall in my parents house that had some not-great symbols with bright paint and hearts and polka dots. We call it the cheer up closet. I’ve started masking again in classes, meetings, and on public transit. I buy biodegradable gloves, trash bags, cotton tips, and so on. When I thrift, I buy cheap books, books I enjoyed, or books that might be banned to put in lottle free libraries. It’s motivated me to spend more time in Libraries, community spaces, and to get involved with organizing on my campus. So at least in my personal life, it leads me in the right direction!

variety of assorted mushrooms and fungi i saw
fungi only grow, like lichens, where the air is really clean. they are a sign that the mycorrhizal network in the soil is in good condition, they are actually the fruiting bodies of the fungal hyphae (sort of like a rose or a rosehip)
mushrooms are ruled by pluto and venus in astrology, venus due to their connections to taurus and their vital role in the generation of all living things, pluto due to their underground nature and the fact they spend a large part of their lives hidden
anyway, these ones were pretty cute, wish I was better at identifying

There's been this broken glass put by my kiddos bus stop for the last month and parents have been complaining to the city about it and nothings happened. Today has officially been long enough I've decided to do it myself! So come along with me to do a community project 💕💕

This particular mend was an interesting journey, I think. It really had me considering the process and approach in the second half, when initially I started with a real napkin sketch of an idea, and hurriedly threw it down onto the fabric.
Tumblr media
So first off, here, we just see some black thread whip-stitching a hole in place, nothing special, right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Turns out, WRONG! It's not just a satin stitched circle, it's gonna be a cat paw! Here's where I pause for a bit, though, because I'm realizing that the black thread really doesn't show off the shape and detailing in the satin stitches, so it just sort of looks like two vaguely shaped blobs, and that won't do!
So, I settle in for a bit of a think, and, additionally noticing that Magnus, the cat who's paw I started this with in mind, has black toe beans, realize I've gotta take a bit of a left turn away from the impulse of "put cat paw over cat holes". I did a little digging, turns out, there's a tool that generates DMC color codes based on color code (over here: https://www.thread-bare.com/tools/match-closest-dmc-thread-to-color-tool), and decide that color-picking from Library's beans would be a fun way to solve the problem. Color picking from the reference picture of his beans here:
Tumblr media
revealed an additional minor trouble, the color that would have perfectly matched the center bean there on his front paw was discontinued, but good news, the second and third closest colors are super easy to get! I did a little test swatching to find that the way I was planning to blend those two colors didn't quite work as intended (alternating stitch by stitch satin stitches, and adding a ceylon block of the second, pinker color on top of the third, greyer color satin stitches), like so:
Tumblr media
Made it so I had to make a third pivot from the original idea, and I came up with this!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a nutshell? split the difference by bean! Have the main one in the middle be the reddish-pink color I thought was slightly too directly pink for the whole thing, since like you can see in the reference photo, the center bean is a bit more flushed, and use the greyer color for the toe beans, since they're a bit less red in tone.
Especially with the test swatching I did to cover up some burn marks on a rag that had an Unfortunate Encounter with the stove, it really felt like I was actually making artistic decisions here, rather than just going "hm, lemme just toss some cute little thisn'that over some holes in my wardrobe".
Sure, anchoring those pink satin stitches onto the black threads that stretched over the original hole made it a bit more of a process, (knotting the thread to get it to hold still didn't 100% work out, like you can see with those two small horizontal stitches) but at the end of the day, I really like the look of how it all came together, and I wouldn't be complaining if I didn't see it from the inside, as it goes with art projects. Now I've got a little cat-paw that reminds me of both of my cats, and I get to wear it around for people to see!
