Since my Durge is the default/canon dragonborn I had this idea of him feeling self conscious about his appearance - looking like a big scary monster in general for one and for two, feeling like an inadequate partner for Gortash, cause Gort can’t even really kiss him the way he’d be able to kiss a human/elf/tiefling/etc. He doubts Gortash even really loves him because he just looks so different. So one night as a surprise Durge casts disguise self to look like an average human and he sets up all seductively in bed and when Gort gets home, Durge is all like “Look! Soft skin! No spikes! Kissable lips! You can make out with me properly now!”
But the plot twist is that Gort refuses to even get in the bed unless they change back immediately lol.
I don’t know how in character this is technically - like I do think the way these two are insane about each other goes far far beyond physical - but I am really charmed by the idea that at a certain point Gortash is so attached to HIS Durge that it would be too weird for them to look any other way. Even dragonborn Durge, enough that Gort wouldn’t even miss something like proper kissing after a while. He wouldn’t kiss them with a magic human face because that’s not Durge to him. It’s Durge’s real face that makes him so happy every time he sees it, and that’s the version he wants.
So if Gort saw his dragonborn Durge had magicked into a human for him, he’s like nope, absolutely not, too weird, change back right now. I think he would be more annoyed that Durge would even THINK that’s what he wants, more than anything lol. He wants them exactly as they are, thank you very much, so get that other guy out of here!
Tldr I just think what Gortash has with Durge is special and atypical on a lot of levels so that it doesn’t matter what Durge actually looks like, as long as they look like themself... if that makes sense 😭
This is really really sweet actually and I love the idea.
Part of me wants to say though that dragonborns are present at baldur's gate, so we at least know that they're somewhat normalized and I doubt fucking a dragonborn would really be taboo.
You can fuck dwarves and drow and elves and tieflings and whatever the fuck.
However. I admit. Just logistically. It's pretty hard to kiss a dragonborn. It would be even harder to fuck one, I mean, just look at those scales. You'd get your ass peeled off. Some skin chafing at best, flaying at absolute worst.
So I like this idea because maybe dark urge would be a little self conscious because they aren't supposed to love, so they never thought about it before.
But now that they are like...in a weird relationship, then maybe they start feeling odd about it or want to be more normal for him.
And the idea of Gortash insisting that he likes how they look and wouldn't have them any other way...
How romantic :) for those two serial killers.
But also.
Dragonborn. Monster.
Loving someone who sees them as more than that.
Who loves all of their abnormality.
Psychological and physical.
Hrrrrrr.

Poor Little Rich Girl, Chapter 8: Show Me
Summary: Gale shows Dulcinea something special. Dulcinea and Wyll talk about grief. Dulcinea asks Gale to teach her how to place lanceboard. Rating: MA Category: F/M Relationships: Tav/Gale Chapter 8/? Word count: 2.2k
Even amidst the blood-stained nightmare in which she found herself, Dulcinea could never resist a good party. While a celebration with the tieflings was far from the balls and galas of Waterdeep and Athkatla, Dulcinea decided that it was acceptable under the circumstances.
It was odd preparing for a party without Clothilde and tragically few options for dresses, making Dulcinea feel more homesick than ever. She managed to snag a bar of soap from the supply stores and made use of the afternoon to take a bath and wash her hair, which had been tucked away in a tight bun for three days at least. The soap was unscented and harsh on her skin, but it was better than the alternative of showing up unbathed to a party, informal as this one would be.
Alcohol, music, and laughter flowed freely that night. Alfira, the young tiefling bard, played her repertoire of songs new and old, including the one that Gale helped her write at the druid’s grove. For the first time since she woke up on that godsforsaken beach, she felt a cautious sense of relief.
Dulcinea was in her element as she circulated through the party. As she moved around, sipping her wine, she could feel someone’s gaze upon her. Let them stare, she smirked to herself, tossing her tightly-ringleted mane of hair over her shoulder. It wasn’t until she snuck a glance at Gale that she realized that he had been the one staring at her. He quickly and awkwardly averted his gaze, attempting to assuage the fact that he’d been caught in the act.
Dulcinea sauntered over to him, now holding her second glass of wine.
“You’ve been staring at me all evening,” she remarked, smirking. “Do you need something?”
“I wasn’t sure we’d have a chance to speak this evening,” he replied, meeting her gaze. “I was hoping you’d spare me a moment. There is something rather magical I wish to show you.”
Dulcinea raised her eyebrows, cocking her head to the side. “Is that the wine talking?” Gods, of course this is how he would proposition someone, Dulcinea thought to herself.
“I promise you - my offer is a perfectly sober one. So, what do you say? Believe me, few have experienced the pleasure I’m about to teach.”
Despite her attempts to suppress her surprise, Dulcinea’s eyes widened. She could feel her cheeks flush as she pursed her lips together. She struggled to maintain her cool, aloofness in front of Gale, especially given what she thought he was proposing.
“Ah… yes. That sounds nice,” she stammered, looking away from him. “So, ah, shall I find you later?”
“Once the stillness of the night returns. This is best experiences in more intimate surroundings.”
“A-alright,” Dulcinea said, barely able to look Gale in the eye once more. “I’ll see you then.”
She hurried away from him, caught in a complex wave of conflicting emotions and perceptions, unsure if what she just experienced was real or just a wine-induced illusion. Dulcinea continued to circulate through the party, playing hostess as she had so many times before, but she couldn’t seem to shake the anticipatory nervousness she felt.
Dulcinea attempted unsuccessfully to drown her nerves in another glass of wine. For the first time in her life, she felt insecure about her body. How in the hells could she contend with Mystra in terms of beauty? Would her mortal body be enough for him?
Late that night, Dulcinea made her way to Gale’s tent. She had to step through a veritable ocean of sleeping tieflings, taking care not to wake anyone up.
When she reached his tent, Gale had his back turned to her. He was looking at something in the palm of his hand. From the brief view she got, Dulcinea knew who it was: Mystra.
“Please don’t tell me you’re conjuring up images of your ex-lover right now,” Dulcinea sighed. She had half a mind to stomp back to her tent and seal herself in for the night.
Gale jumped upon hearing her voice. “My goodness… you startled me. I was miles away.”
Dulcinea cocked an eyebrow, looking at Gale incredulously. “Miles away and looking at Mystra,” she said dryly. “Sorry to have interrupted. I’ll leave you to… whatever this is.”
She turned to leave, swallowing hard to conceal her hurt and disappointment.
“I was lost in prayer, oddly enough.”
Don’t bullshit a bullshitter, she thought to herself bitterly. “A prayer,” Dulcinea repeated back.
“Even now, I fear losing command of Mystra’s art. Salvation is for her to bestow or withhold. I’ve been in touch with the Weave my whole life. There’s nothing like it. It’s art given expression through the senses. Is it like that for you?”
“It’s complicated,” Dulcinea said cryptically.
“Perhaps I can show you what I mean by reaching into the Weave together.”
Dulcinea furrowed her brow. “Gale, I’m a passable mage at best, but I’m not a complete fool. I know what the Weave is,” Dulcinea said defensively.
“Let me show you a side of the Weave you’ve not seen.”
She sighed inwardly, brushing a stray ringlet from her face. “Alright then.”
“Follow my lead.”
A gesture to replicate. An incantation to repeat. Harmony embodied by a hazy Athkatlan sunset. A feeling of peace and intimacy. Dulcinea recognized the safe, comforting feeling as the presence of Mystra, a sensation from so long ago that she had nearly forgotten. Dulcinea felt a twinge of suspicion and unease within this. The goddess of mysteries was watching them.
“You’re channeling The Weave,” Gale said, excitedly. “How does it feel?”
“Familiar,” Dulcinea quipped, half-smirking.
“You’re a tough woman to please, I see.”
“Only when I feel like it,” she purred, turning towards him. Their eyes met — his deep brown eyes, full of excitement and nervousness and her hazel eyes, heavily lidded and conveying her desire. The light that radiated from the Weave highlighted Gale’s cheekbones and made his single earring sparkle. Dulcinea studied his face carefully, noting every crease. It was the first time that she noticed the pale purple lines that traced from his left eye down to the Netherese scar on his chest.
Their minds were linked psychically by their tadpoles. Anything I envision, he’ll be able to see.
Dulcinea imagined placing her hand on the back of his head, caressing his cheek with the other. She leaned in towards him, her lips brushing his. Dulcinea could smell him: old books, dust, and bergamot. She pressed her lips to his, feeling his beard tickle her face as she pulled him into her arms.
Dulcinea sucked gently on Gale’s lower lip, biting it in flirtatious provocation. As her hips pressed against his, she could feel his growing erection pushing towards her. Her hands traveled down his sides —
And just like that, it was over. There was no Weave surrounding them, no psychic connection; just the night breeze carrying the snores of tieflings sleeping off a night of drunken revelry.
“I didn’t realize… I didn’t expect…” Gale stammered, unable to meet Dulcinea’s eyes. Dulcinea’s heart sank, exhaling quietly.
“But it is a most pleasant image to be sure. Most welcome, in fact.”
Dulcinea said nothing as she reeled internally.
“I enjoyed sharing a moment of magic with you tonight,” Gale said, half-smiling as he stepped into his tent, closing it behind him. The night felt cold and lonely.
Dulcinea’s cheeks burned hot with embarrassment and frustration. No matter what, it seemed that she consistently hurt her own feelings when it came to Gale. Why would he invite her to see him, make allusions to sexual intimacy, and take her into The Weave, only to sever the connection? Was she misreading this? Was he misreading this? Gods, she got drunk and embarrassed herself, as she did countless times before. She nabbed a stray bottle of wine that lay near the fire and ducked into her tent. She didn’t give a shit that it was warm from being close to the dying embers. She just needed something to dull her discomfort.
Bringing the bottle to her lips, she remembered that she was due for a run with Wyll in the morning followed by hand axe throwing. Dulcinea decided she didn’t care.
“You’re not complaining nearly as much as you usually do,” Wyll observed. “Either your endurance has increased tremendously or something is bothering me. You don’t have to tell me, but I’m here if you need to talk.”
Dulcinea huffed alongside him, trying to match his pace. Wyll was an exceptional runner with enough endurance to run from Baldur’s Gate to Candlekeep if he so pleased.
“If anything, there’s too much on my mind,” Dulcinea admitted breathlessly. She didn’t care to tell him about what happened or didn’t happen with Gale. “The tadpole, returning home eventually, what will happen when I return to Waterdeep.” She drew in several deep breaths, trying to quell a growing cramp in her side. “It certainly doesn’t help that I’m nursing a blindingly awful hangover.”
Wyll snorted, grinning at her. “Too much wine and merriment last night, I’m assuming. Alone or with someone else?”
“Alone,” Dulcinea responded too quickly.
“I see,” Wyll replied knowingly. “I won’t push the matter in that case. What waits for you in Waterdeep?”
Dulcinea breathed through pursed lips, still nursing the cramp in her side. “Nothing anymore, I suppose. My ex-fiancé and I ended our engagement, which has likely blacklisted me from the arcane community. I have no idea where Clothilde, my old governess, has gone off to, but I doubt she’d wait around for me.”
Dulcinea fell silent for a moment. “Truth be told, I don’t know if I can even return to Waterdeep.”
Wyll nodded in quiet understanding. They had reached the halfway mark on their run.
“Wyll?” Dulcinea asked. “What was it like leaving Baldur’s Gate after what happened with your father? What was it like starting over?”
Wyll half-smiled, drawing in a deep, careful breath. “You’re asking hard questions this morning, I see.” He cleared his throat, drawing in another breath. “It was terrifying, admittedly. Even the Blade of Frontiers feels scared sometimes. I spent much time alone, feeling quite sorry for myself. Defending that young boy in Cloakwood changed my life. It gave me a greater purpose. People needed me. I still feel that deep ache of grief when I think of my father and how much I miss him. It’s like a cramp you might get while running. You must breathe through it, let it pass, and keep moving.”
Dulcinea hummed in understanding. “Grief is like a cramp, isn’t it? An apt analogy if I’ve ever heard one.”
Wyll smiled proudly. “Thank you. I’ve been working on that one.”
They ran in time together until they reached camp where they could see their companions milling around, still groggy. The tieflings had packed and departed early, leaving the camp empty and quiet.
Gale sat by the fire, percolator in hand. Upon hearing Dulcinea and Wyll return from their run, he looked over his shoulder at them and smiled.
“You’re in time for coffee!” he announced. “How fortuitous! I was sure Astarion and Shadowheart would have made short work of it had you returned a moment later.”
Dulcinea smiled, pretending that seeing him didn’t make her stomach churn. It’s only a cramp of longing, she told herself. Let it pass.
“What I need is an ice bath,” she joked, taking a seat next to him.
“I have never run unless it was vital to my survival, but I hope your morning ablutionary run was, erm, pleasant,” Gale said. He watched as a bead of sweat trickled down from Dulcinea’s forehead. Her cheeks were flushed with exertion and she was still breathing heavily.
“May I fetch you some water? You must be parched,” he offered.
“That would be an absolute godsend,” Dulcinea breathed. “Thank you.”
Gale hurried off, returning moments later with a flask of water and a wet rag.
“You’re a lifesaver,” Dulcinea sighed, pressing the cold rag to her forehead. She closed her eyes as she felt her face begin to cool down. She moaned softly in relief.
Gale pursed his lips together, trying to stifle a growing erection. He found her most beautiful like this. Sweat and water mingled and glistened on her cheeks and forehead and she was still breathing heavily, although less so than before. She was organic, raw, and carnal.
Dulcinea drained the flask of water, sighing in satisfaction. “Thank you,” she breathed, looking over at Gale. “Truly.”
“It is always my pleasure, Dulcinea,” he smiled, pouring her a cup of coffee, which Dulcinea accepted with gratitude.
“This morning, I was pondering over a game of lanceboard I once played with my colleague many years ago. Ordinarily, I walk away the victor of such games yet in a rare turn of events he trounced me. I was retrospectively evaluating my opening moves,” Gale said.
“Admittedly, I’ve never played,” Dulcinea replied, sheepishly. “I always meant to learn.”
Gale’s eyes shone bright, as they had last night. “Then I must teach you!”
Dulcinea smiled. “I’d like that. Very much.”
“We must acquire a board or locate one during our travels,” Gale said excitedly. “I assure you, there is no better teacher than I when it comes to lanceboard.”
Dulcinea wasn’t quite sure what she was signing up for by asking him to teach her lanceboard, but it brought her joy to see Gale’s eyes light up at the prospect of showing her something new.

same questions i did for kaine but for WHOEVER YOU WANT :D !! general > 1, 2, 3, 9. story specific > 2, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12. romance > 1, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11
wahahsjshh i am going to answer these for Etienne thank you so much <3
Etienne, tiefling ranger, worm-free brain but still with so many issues. god bless
from these <3
General
1.Where can your Tav be recruited?  Are they first encountered on the Nautiloid, or in the Nautiloid crash region? Or are they not recruitable until a later act?
etienne is found in the emerald grove, trying desperately to maintain the peace between the tieflings and the druids. he's been working as a guide for travelers in the region for a few years, and fell in with the tieflings a few weeks before. he started working with halsin alongside his illithid research when they made it to the grove, and honestly he's part of the reason the tieflings hadn't left yet - he's committed to the issue, and halsin's safe return. he's recruitable alongside halsin after he's rescued and the tieflings move on!
2. Do the other companions have special comments or reactions upon recruiting your Tav?
astarion likely has something to say about how reliable a ranger is going to be on their journey, especially one of his size - hells, his arms are the size of his head.
3. Does your Tav have any comments or advice when you recruit other companions?
not necessarily, given how late he's recruited - he might mention that halsin speaks highly of jaheira, if she's recruited.
9. Does your Tav have any escalating conflicts with one of the other companions, like Lae’zel and Shadowheart’s knife-fight?
stealing content from his ot4 sandbox situation - he doesn't take kindly to astarion feeding from the player, especially if he's romanced, and he will start shit over it, but he can be talked down eventually.
Story Specific
2. How do they advise the player character on Raphael?
"I'm sure you don't need reminding, but it bears repeating - never trust a devil. You'll never draw a winning hand with this one."
7. What can they be found doing at the tiefling/goblin party?
He's standing nearby Halsin, watching over the tieflings. He's a little attached.
8. Do they have comments on who the Player Character chooses to spend the night with?
He doesn't aside from a very genuine reminder to get some actual rest - they've a long journey ahead, and should remain focused.
10. How do they react if the PC licks the dead spider in the Gauntlet of Shar?
"If you start feeling sick, don't come crying to me. Foolish."
11. What do they say if the PC tries to force them to go up on stage with Dribbles the Clown?
"You can't possibly be serious. You are, aren't you? Unbelievable."
12. Is it possible for your Tav to be kidnapped and replaced by Orin?  How is Orin's deception revealed?  How do they react to the PC rescuing them in the Temple of Bhaal?
i think he wouldn't be a kidnapping victim  no matter which way i spin it it just doesn't make sense in my head, especially since halsin is an option.
Romance
1.Is your Tav a romanceable character?  Are there any specific requirements to romancing them?
he is! he's less gated than halsin, the more sort of in-depth half of that particular situation
5. Does the romance have different branching paths, or just one route to take?
etienne only exists as one side of the etienne/halsin coin in my head, so the different paths are really just in that sense - it's possible to romance etienne without also romancing halsin, and vice versa, but it's also possible to romance both, together.
6. How do they react to the player character breaking up with them, or choosing another character over them?
"Oh - have I done something?...I see. Well, I can't say I'm not disappointed. But, you know, wherever the winds carry you."
if it's for someone else: "If you want to explore other relationships, you know I have no desire to keep you all to myself." if the player is adamant: "Fine, then. I hope they treasure you."
7. What questions can Zethino ask the PC about Tav in the Love Test?
If Etienne were an animal what would he be? (A: a mountain lion)
How does Etienne want to be remembered? (A: for his ability to keep others safe)
What is Etienne's greatest desire? (A: to move on from his shadowed past)
9. How do they react if the PC has sex with Mizora? The Emperor?  Haarlep?
He likely has no reaction to the emperor, since he's wormless, and wouldn't know unless the player told him, and he wouldn't mind. he disapproves of mizora and haarlep just by virtue of them being devils, and only wants to make sure the player is okay, and doesn't regret it.
10. Will they join in with the PC and the Drow Twins, or no?
he surely will :) he's a little trepidatious, at first, but gets into it quickly, especially if halsin is there.
11. What are Tav’s plans for the future?  Do they propose to the PC, or is marriage not something they’re interested in?
he will not propose, and he cannot be proposed to - he makes it clear that, no matter if he regains his memories or not, he is committed to what he sees as his duty - to act as a guide for those who need it, and he will not settle down in any sense of the word. he expresses a hope that the player will stay with him, at least for a time, but will understand if they choose not to.

Blood, Flesh, and Tears
Tumblr media
Name: Torment (He/Him)
Race: Zariel Tiefling
Class: Paladin (Oath of Vengence)
Background: Haunted One
Continuing with the Torment run for a moment, I decided to pop off Raphael's quest so that it's in the quest board to do later. After fighting some Kuo-Toa and fighting some slimes, I decided to run over to Moonrise Towers. After seeing the kickass Ketheric Thorm intro, I went around silently taking out the scrying eyes. But I was able to explore a bit more. One, it seems Torment is known at Moonrise Towers! Apparently, Torment, in the unknown past, has been in Moonrise Towers. I discovered this when I decided to speak with a cat named Steelclaw. They made mention that they saw Torment and hissed at them when they first met. I killed the little guy, but this would be far from the last person who recognized Torment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While exploring, I dispatched a few individuals quietly and when I took out Linsella, there was another surprise. Now, I may have unlocked this because I still had Speak with Animals active on Torment, but the mind controlled Gnolls rejoiced when they saw that Torment has returned. Another hint that Torment has been to Moonrise Towers before. There's one final person I discovered during this gameplay moment, but we'll get into that later. After checking out the mystery flesh wall, Torment and the gang went down into the prison to free the Tieflings and Deep Gnomes. This is where Torment met the Tiefling Warden who remembered Torment was given special privilege during his stay at Moonrise, but didn't elaborate why he was cut off.
After dispatching all the guards, Torment freed the Tieflings and Deep Gnomes. Now, something I gotta comment on. So, Rolan's siblings are jailed her and they, for whatever reason, despite the fact that Torment saved them from the Druid Grove, they just assumed that Torment was with them...Which...Ok, I can understand Torment might seem sussy because the Absolute cultists allowed Torment and his crew to freely roam about and talk freely with the other members. But I think my first reaction to seeing my savior from the Emerald Druids and the Goblins would be a smidge of hope before just outright going "fuck you, you're with the absolute >:(."
Regardless, Torment was able to free them safely and send them to Last Light Inn. Also, I found the mystery flesh pit again, but I decided to go in through the hole because I thought it would send me to the other side of the flesh pit so that I could find Zevlor. However, it sent me to the same area. So looks like we still got some exploring to do if we want to find Zevlor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before freeing the Tieflings, as I was in the process of getting rid of the cultists at the docks, we were able to discover that there's a whole barrel full of Mindflayer parasites that is destined to Baldur's Gate and perhaps more is on the way to the city. Shadowheart makes the suggestion that we can utilize it against Moonrise Towers, which that remains to be seen atm.
We also met Araj and Torment supported Astarion not wanting to bite the Drow. However, Torment did agree to give his own blood in exchange for a special elixir specifically made for him. Unlike with Admaer, where this jumpstarted their relationship, Astarion and Torment simply had a 1-on-1 about how he's free to make his own decisions now that he's away from Cazador. Torment was able to find the Githyanki disk where it talks about Prince Orpheus and had Lae'zel translate it for him. While explore the Tower, I was able to reach Ketheric's bedroom with an undead dog guarding the room. Unfortunately, Shadowheart was the one who spoke with the dog and failed in the animal handling check to calm the creature.
After exploring as much of Moonrise as possible, we went over to the mausoleum. One thing I noticed is that there is a dialogue option when Lae'zel is at camp and you go deeper into the Cursed Lands, there's a option to bring up about Lae'zel having not met with her people at the creche yet. At this point, I tried to avoid this because I didn't want her to leave the party. But when I ventured deeper into the temple of Shar, her campsite was no longer there.
Not only that, but while exploring the mausoleum, we found something interesting! So in the area where we can solve a puzzle to reach the Gauntlet of Shar, there's a open coffin in the area with a plaque that says "He lies Isobel Thorm." Now, this time around in this playthrough, I've connected the dots a bit better. Back in my Pero playthrough, I made the assumption that Thorm was mourning his mother and that's why he turned evil. But no, the person he lost was his wife, and he already had, what may be half-elf, children. While his other children turned to the worship of Shar with him, it seems Isobel kept to Selune. It also make it exceptionally interesting that Isobel is to be kidnapped instead of killed because he might've wanted to force her into undeath. Now, I'm just speculating there, but that may be something he wants.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Regardless, this time around, because I know better, when the Party met the three skeletons who had a parasite controlling them, one was left alive after fighting some Shar spirits. Following them, I was able to meet Balthazar and was able to "accept" the quest to look for a way to reach the Nightsong. We were also able to gain his BABY BROTHER!?!?! So that flesh golem is actually Balthazar's miscarriage baby brother whom his mother blamed Balthazar for his twin's death. In response, his mother is in a jar in the room.
I also learned that there's a Shar worshipper in the temple of Shar that's become a swarm of rats...So that's something. After dealing with Raphael's rival and learning the meaning behind Astarion's scars. Like Pero, Torment agreed to help Astarion and take down his former master. However, we gotta talk about Shadowheart. Now, Torment is starting to not vibe with Shar, especially after experiencing and reading up on what people who worship Shar do and stand for. If it comes down to it, Torment will kill Shadowheart if she intends to fully devote herself to Shar as a Dark Justiciar.

Fanfic ask game for procrastinating on writing (very accurate, since I should really be working on either the Aeor Fic or my dissertation right now). Tagged by @essektheylyss and @saturdaysky - tysm, this is very fun! <3
1) How many works do you have on AO3?
28! I only really started posting regularly on AO3 after I got into writing for CR, so there’s a modest amount there right now.
2) What’s your total AO3 word count?
~126000; probably going to be a lot more by the time the Aeor Fic is finished!.
3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
Only three on AO3 - Critrole, obviously, plus some from my Star Wars: The Old Republic days and a single lonely Dragon Age fic. I’ve written for some other fandoms in the past (Elder Scrolls, mainly).
4) What are your top five fics by kudos?
Show me where my skin begins: Shadowgast; a study of Essek’s touch starvation and the important of touch between him and Caleb as their relationship develops.
My reasons for defying reason: Oneshot looking at Essek’s friendships with each of the Nein in turn, and the Nein’s different love languages.
I shine only with the light you gave me: The wizards slow dance at a fancy Dynasty ball, and Essek negotiates Den dynamics.
I’ll use you as a focal point: Essek summons a familiar, and as he adjusts to life with her, she helps him speedrun his character arc.
How to struggle gracefully: The Mighty Nein and Essek have dinner with Deirta Thelyss, as told through Veth’s perspective. Feat. Veth unpacking some of her own issues and her relationship with Essek
5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Not as much as I’d like to anymore; my current health issues mean I have trouble writing at all, let alone replying to comments... but when I’m functioning better, I do try to reply to as many as I can! I absolutely love seeing people’s insights and hearing their thoughts; you guys make every second of writer’s block worth it! <3
6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Hmm, I really don’t know! I’m generally an angst with a happy ending person, so I tend to round things off hopefully. I’d say that The scars that silence carved on me maybe qualifies, because from Essek’s perspective, it ends somewhat ambiguously - but the reader obviously knows that he’s about to get tackle-hugged by a little blue tiefling the moment after the fic ends.
7) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
Not really. My Inquisitor!Essek AU is about the closest I’ve got, but I’m not sure I’d ever write anything or it.
8) Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Not since I was about fourteen, thankfully! I’ve had the odd ‘I hate [x character/fandom] but I love this story’ comment here and there.
9) Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Not really. I’ve occasionally strayed into very vaguely nsfw stuff, but I don’t think I’d enjoy writing real smut, nor do I have any confidence that I’d do so halfway decently!
10) Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of!
11) Have you ever had a fic translated?
I did once, many years ago back when I was writing Elder Scrolls stuff.
12) Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, but I’m definitely not opposed to the idea!
13) What’s your all time favourite ship?
My fic history says Shadowgast, for sure, and I can see them being a love of mine for a very long time.
14) What’s a WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Nothing that’s posted, thankfully, but I’d truly love to finish the one that currently sits under the working title of ‘the Essek and soup fic’. I’m very fond of it, but just don’t seem to be able to make work beyond its first scene. (Maybe I’ll post that as a standalone someday.)
15) What are your writing strengths?
I like to think I’ve got a good sense for prose rhythm? When I’m proofreading, I can generally count on a voice in my head to be saying ‘this sentence needs to be x length’, or ‘this sentence needs another adjective in it to carry the right emotional weight’, and to tell me when something just feels right and flows nicely.
16) What are your writing weaknesses?
I think I have a bit of a tendency to want to include everything - every interesting thought and bit of character exploration that I come up with in the planning process. Also, plotting! The reason I’ve generally stuck to oneshots is because I find writing lengthier plots really, really hard; sooner or later I just get stumped, thinking ‘ok, but what happens now?’ There’s a reason planning the Aeor fic has taken several months!
17) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
It’s not something I’d do myself, mostly because I really wouldn’t want to mess up another language in a fic - but I’ve seen it really suit certain stories before.
18) What was the first fandom you wrote for?
It is... really hard to remember that far back, but probably either Skyrim or Torchwood. I did not do so well, but I did it :’D
19) What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
Show me where my skin begins has a special place in my heart for being such huge fun to write and for being a truly feelgood fic. Familiar (like my mirror years ago) will always be important to me just for being my first CR fic and my entry point, as it were, to the CR fandom.
... but I really do hve a soft spot for The scars that silence carved on me, a study of Essek’s growth between 99 and 124. It’ll never be one of my most popular fics - the Nein don’t even appear in it - but I just loved taking Essek through all of these little changes, bridging the gap between the negotations and his reunion with his friends. And there are some scenes and lines in here I’m really proud of.
I think just about everyone I’d love to tag for this has already been tagged, so consider this an open tag for anyone who’d like to do this!

1 & 7!
omg i didn't actually think i'd get any dnd related asks i don't talk about it enough on here but i'm so excited to infodump on you 🥺👉🏻👈🏻
I have three main characters that I've really fleshed out in detail (Rhys, my original tiefling bard who has kind of spawned a whole lot of other memeing and nonsense, Waffles, a 14-year-old necromancer alternate timeline version of Rhys who is obsessed with speedrunning becoming a lich, and Corian, a half-elf artificer who I am playing currently).
For these asks I'll answer for Corian as he's the one I'm playing currently although if anyone else wants request others please tell me.
D&D Ask Game
What is your character's morning routine?
Corian is very messy and not a very consistent person, so his morning "routine" varies widely. When he manages to wake up early and is feeling like a morning person, he goes down to the bakery in his hometown, Leviathan, and grabs some pastries and coffee for breakfast. He might have classes to teach at the wizarding school or other important uhhh business in town don't worry about it. Most of the time though he just wakes up any time between 10am and 12pm, slaps himself in the face a little bit, downs some shitty instant coffee or any leftover alcohol and eats whatever breakfast he can scrounge together while he's already working on gadgets for the day. Theoretically he reads the paper in this time too. That's a very civil and professional thing to do, right? His mechanical familiar, Cogs, holds up whatever he's reading and turns the pages for him if his hands are busy, or Corian uses his mechanical third arm he straps to his equipment to turn the pages himself and assist in the drinking coffee.
7. How was their relationship with their parents/guardians growing up?
Corian has really loving and supportive parents whom he's always gotten along with. His mother, an elf about 300 years old named Theira, would read him stories about the Feywild while speaking in Sylvan, which sparked his side fascination with fey things. She's a chronic nurturer with really huge motherly instincts, but not just the gentle and loving ones, also the kind that can smell bullshit from a mile away and can shut shit down with just a look and tone of her voice. Which is important, considering the antics of Corian and her husband, Henry, aka Corian's father.
His father, Henry, is a human artificer who also is a clockmaker, and Corian would spend a lot of time working in his shop ever since he was old enough to hold a screwdriver - and honestly even before then. Corian grew up in a big family (he's one of six) but he's the one who turned out most like Henry, to the excitement of Henry and to the dismay of everyone else, because Henry is a chaotic, unpredictable artificer who likes experimenting and causing trouble with, well, everything. Theira definitely runs the house though. It's a matriarchal family, definitely.
Additionally, Corian was born with something called a Desecration Mark, which are marks that give a little bit of special inherent power, but the world thinks that people who are born with these marks are inherently evil, soulless, etc. Theira and Henry never believed these things about desecration marks and loved their son despite what the world might think of him, and always did their best to protect him and keep his identity hidden.
I drew this picture a while ago that sums up the Sedgewick-Serloc family dynamic pretty well:

(I hate being a literature student. Just know that literature students have a bad habit of over-analyzing stuff, and apparently D&D games are not exceptions.)
Normally I don't talk about ships. I think that everybody is free to ship whoever character they want with who they want and I am no one to judge them. Especially if the characters in question are from a live role playing game and one of the ships in question involves a couple controlled by a couple who is married IRL. But this one. Oh boy. Laura Bailey is an absolute beast and she deserves all the respect in the world if even a fraction of what I think it's happening/going to happen will effectively happen in game.
Fjord kissed Jester. He asked for her permission and he got it. It was beautiful. And I am genuinely freaking out because I knew that was going to happen and it's even worse than I imagined it. Why am I talking about it like it is something bad? Because it's possible that Jester is not ready to be in a relationship right now, and that Jester herself is not aware of it. Let's talk about it from the beginning.
Jester likes Fjord from the beginning of the campaign, we all know that. When Jester met Fjord for the first time, she was a sheltered girl who, in her head, just met the perfect man: a proud and strong sailor who wants to live an adventurous life just like the heroes of her novels, and she easily identified herself as the heroine the hero will inevitably fall in love with. They meet the rest of the Nein, live on their adventures and Jester keeps on acting like she is the Guinevere of her personal love story inside her head, while Fjord is blissfully unaware of what is happening inside the skull of his new friend.
Then Fjord meets Avantika, a mature woman who seems to share many traits and interests with him. Jester is clearly jealous, especially after that they sleep together to seal their alliance. That is also the moment when Jester starts to see Fjord's flaws and she seems to be willing to accept them, which is actually a point in favor for a possible relationship between them. But Fjord is still unaware of what the special attention of the blue tiefling actually means.
Then she meets a real married couple, and she starts to realize that romance is not always like she imagined it was. Nott/Veth and Yeza are married and have a child, and they are not as dependent to each other like the heroes of her novels: Nott does her own things and she is a strong independent woman and Yeza is pretty much the same, they are not allowed to be as intimate as they used to be because of "Nott's condition", but they still love and support each other through and through. And at this point, Jester starts to notice that there is a member of the Mighty Nein that seems to show her that unconditional love and support that Nott and Yeza radiate with every action: Caleb Widogast.
Caleb used to be a stinky wizard, a brash individual who joined the group just because he was too squishy to survive on his own. But ever since they are in Xhorhas, he cleaned himself, he is kinder with everyone and he wants to help her organize the Traveler Con even if the event has nothing to do with him directly. Jester is visibly touched by his newfound beauty and kindness. But he still loves Astrid. He called Jester with her name when they danced together in Hupperdook. And he seems to be interested in Essek Thyless too, so she is probably imagining it. The Mighty Nein travel, grow more powerful, and Fjord manages to set himself free from Uk'utoa's influence and becomes a Paladin of the Wildmother. He finally becomes more similar to the hero Jester imagined he was when he met him for the first time, but she seems to be only minimally bothered by his change. She needs time to think because she feels that something is changing inside her. Fjord might not be the right one after all. Caleb is always there for here with all his support, and she starts to want to be there for him.
Eventually, they stop the war, they defeat a fire god and Caleb sets up wonderful magic and illusions so that the Traveler Con is a success. But then, during the last night of the gathering, something happens and Sehanine, the Moonweaver herself is angry. She is taking Artagan away, and Jester is willing to follow him in the Feywild and share his punishment... but Fjord grabs her and begs her not to go. She has still the Mighty Nein, she has still him. For the first time Fjord is being explicit about his feelings for her. Luckily everything goes well and the Mighty Nein are free to come back to Wildemount... Where she finds out about Caleb's past and his intent to save his friend Eadwulf and his former lover Astrid from Trent Ikithon. They go dance again, Caleb pushes her in Fjord's arms, and the half-orc gives her a present. There is definitely something. But there is Caleb too, but he is too busy trying to deal with his demons to pay attention to her.
Jester meets Astrid and she antagonizes her. She is jealous, she thinks that Astrid is Caleb's ideal woman and she realizes they are not alike at all. She is a talented and ambitious wizard, while she is just Jester, the cleric of an Archfey. Astrid is just like Essek, and Caleb is attracted by Essek. Jester understands if Caleb doesn't like her after all: why should he be interested into a childish cleric whose power is not even her own? They are just very good friends. That's all. He should be back with Astrid and she will support him if that will happen once that she will be free from Trent Ikithon's influence. But Caleb is still so kind, and loving, and supportive... she is really confused about it. But he is kind and loving with all of his friends, so in the end it might not be important.
And then, there is Eiselcross with its weird ancient magic. A magic as dangerous as the one they found in the Happy Fun Ball, which contained a Blue Dragon and a trap that managed to kill Nott without them being able to prevent it. Everything is dangerous and the Mighty Nein realize as the time passes by that not everyone of them could get out of there alive, especially given what and who they are trying to stop. And Jester herself falls into a trap: she is given a vision that confirms to the Mighty Nein that what they feared is true, that the Tomb Takers' objective is to bring an eldritch floating city scary enough to cause a Morkoth into voluntary exile back to Exandria, where it intends to absorb its inhabitants into its hive mind. The price to pay for the vision are 5 years of her life. "Growing old" is different than "growing up", and it happens to her in a matter of seconds. Jester is five years closer to death now, and it is possible that she is lucky they are just five. The minor changes in her appearance are a reminder of what it could have happened if she wasn't lucky, and she has no idea about what else changed about herself and what will change in her personal life and relationships because of that accident. All she knows right now is that these might be her last days alive and she is afraid she might be missing something before her untimely death.
(And she would not be silly to think about it. After all, who they are facing is reminding all of the Mighty Nein that even if they are becoming powerful they are still mortal beings.)
And when she is in the middle of a mild existential crisis and confusion reigns inside her head, Fjord declares. And Jester, still willing to believe that she is her old self, the young woman who left Nicodronas and miraculously met the man of her dreams that will lead her to live an exciting life full of love and adventures, accepts to kiss him. It is very likely that she was not thinking about anything in that moment, but one thing: "If I say yes to Fjord it means that I am still me, right? It is happening because it was supposed to happen from the beginning, because we were supposed to be together."
There is just one little problem: Jester is ignoring the fact that she has changed from the person she used to be back then, and it did not happen because a group of stone statues magically aged her up. There is still something for Fjord, she will never forget him as he is and he will always be her first love. But she has some feelings for Caleb too, and even if she is "a good liar" they might be too strong for her to simply ignoring them. After all, Caleb "I was trained to lie and kill for the Empire" Widogast did an excellent job when he was trying to hide them. There are some clues here and there that hint that Jester might love Caleb as much as he loves her and that she wants him to be happy, even with other people... just like he wants it for her. Add the trauma she is just starting to deal with, and there is almost no way that her current relationship with Fjord is going to evolve into something healthy and angst free right now. This if that kiss was the effective beginning of a serious relationship, and not the promise of a future relationship between them if she will be still available.
But these are the vibes that the beginning of a relationship between them is giving to me right now, and nothing will be confirmed until Laura Bailey will show up to Talks Machina to talk about it. I am also curious about how she will react when she will see Essek again: when the stakes were not high she used to tease him to be with Caleb... but now she has met Astrid, she might have feelings for him and being in a relationship with another person, and Caleb states that he doesn't trust him. I guess that if she still does, it will be mostly an attempt to show to everyone that nothing changed for her and that she is fine (and that would be a huge step back into her character development, but it was her defense mechanism until the Rumblecusp arc and she is dealing with a lot of serious stuff all together right now).
I'm not saying that the ship is going to die: I'm saying that because of the circumstances behind how it was made official and the relationship between all the character involved, I would say that it is very likely that it will lead to some cute moments, but that it eventually won't last. This is especially true if it will confirmed that Jester has feelings for Caleb too, as feelings for another person are not easy to get rid off, and I am fully expecting Jester to angst and talk to someone about them at some point. She needs to achieve true clarity and accept that she is going to break someone's heart in order to be in a healthy, happy relationship. Because, let's face it, we all imagined Jester would have been much happier if she'd ever entered into a relationship, shouting about it out loud so that everyone know. There is something weird here. So, or either the kiss is a promise, or Jester's heart is not fully into it and this means trouble.
But yes, Laura Bailey promised us that she would have romanced Travis's character and she is doing it. And whatever it will be the final result, she is still a legend for having achieved the impossible once more.
PS: Obviously this post in the end means nothing, as no one owns and knows the full truth behind the intent of these characters but the actors who control them. I just wanted to give my two cents about the question. It's more likely that this development will prevent Jester to suffer from a mental breakdown in Eiselcross instead of causing her to suffer from one, but I tend to over-analyze stuff. Please forgive me for this.
PS2:  As a final note, it would have been the same even if Caleb would have been in Fjord's place, if not even worse: I wrote a post about Caleb in Eiselcross too, and between him and Jester I have no idea of who is the most messed up at the moment. Poor children...

My own character predictions/wishes
Ashley: ranger or paladin, she has played PCs with strong relationships with their gods so i think its something she could consider, it would also be a special treat to see a paladin since lvl1. Race could be a genasi or a dwarf, but she could be a human this time.
Laura: sorcerer, especially wild magic, i think she can play up the chaos, especially with how she played two very distinct characters, Jester had a lot of themes of comming of age stories so maybe something similar, that is, if another one of the cast dont choose it first. Race, i wish for a tabaxi, oh man oh man, she would be a great tabaxi!
But unlikely due to Travis and his allergies, Lian really tested with Frumpkin
Liam: brooding boy could play a warlock, but i think he wanted to go more martial this time, so maybe monk? A shadow monk maybe or a college of swords bard. Maybe even a lycan bloodhunter.  For race, he goes for pretty boys so maybe an elf, or tiefling
Marisha: she can be the wildcard, she has played low Charisma characters so thats out of the table, she doesnt care much for gods so that too, it would be nice to see her play an int class so maybe a wizard or artificer. Race, man.. i kinda see her as a dragonborn/ravenite. But aaracokra would be really nice. I can perfectly visualise an Aaracokra artificer doing strange experiments! (treat for me! treat for mee!)
Sam: as much as i wish for it, cleric and druid are out of the window, high int low wis is what he likes so, maybe a fighter? Eldrich knight kind of thing since he likes spellcasting. Could also go for a warlock but Sam has very little interest in the gods for his PCs. Race, man... again, kenku would be fun, but i have a hunch for warforged or satyr, even a freaking triton, in the desert, not human or elf for sure. In all honesty, i dont know Liam enough to guess what he would choose.
Taliesin: *checks the list of new classes and subclases* uhhhhhhhh...... Rogue? Wizard?I have a hunch for something mainly charisma so warlock or bard, he likes to mix it up and try something new so i dont really know, there have been a bunch of new warlock pacts so im going for that. That is if they are not trying something new and unreleased. Race maybe a warforged or half elf.
Travis: we had strength with Barbarian/fighter, and Charisma with Warlock/paladin, so maybe we have wisdom this time with a Cleric or Druid, big fan of the latter for him since he could make a fun new taste of druid, both Grog and Fjord were really intertwined with gods so that's a big plus for cleric. He also really like doing damage, so either is possible. He could go with a ranger, mostly the Horizon walker subclass. Race, about anything, he might avoid goblinoids this time around, so he could do a genasi, dragonborn or a dwarf even,  but i think he might be the token human this time around.
The consistent classes amongst both campaigns have been Rogue, Barbarian and Cleric, i personally don't love Barbarian as a class so that's why i didn't include it, but i know the cast LOVES barbarians, if i have to choose, maybe Liam as a barbarian dunno which path tho.
Also it would be really neat for a Cleric-less party this time, since last campaign had two.
Gender is fake, i'm aware, but i think Marisha and/or Taliesin might play a enby/oposite gender character. Just a hunch but it doesnt really matter in the end. (oposite gender i mean Marisha playing a man, and Tal playing a woman type thing).
Man!! Im excited!

AO3 name: DarkwingSnark
Fandoms: ...SEE, I’m in lots of fandoms. Or at least, I’ve written for them during hyper-fixation periods. Let’s see what AO3 says...
Batman: The Animated Series (20)
Batman - All Media Types (7)
Wander Over Yonder (Cartoon) (6)
DuckTales (Cartoon 1987) (5)
Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero (5)
Penguins of Madagascar (3)

Winnie-the-Pooh - All Media Types (1)
Alice in Wonderland (1951) (1)
Gummi Bears (TV) (1)
Winnie-the-Pooh (Disney) (1)
.... Honestly, I feel like there’s more that this list isn’t covering. Like Phineas and Ferb isn’t here and I wrote for that show too. And many of these can be simplified and condensed because they belong to similar fics.
Tropes: Depends on the fic. But as a whole, tend to write Romantic Comedies with a lot of slow burn. Mostly because... struggle is funny. People being dumdums and oblivious to the obvious is funny. Aaaaand also because it allows the episodic quality of shenanigans to occur.
Number of fics: Up and posted on AO3? 53. Does not include stuff on FF.net or that’s sitting in google docs begging to be finished.
Fic I spent the most time on: Not sure how to read this. Does it mean active man hours? Or does stuff like having a hiatus in-between count? Because TECHNICALLY ‘Real Value’ was started in high school, and I didn’t rewrite it and carry on the series (with Moonie) until many years later. There are also fics like ‘Growing Love’ or ‘Priorities’ that took a lot of time to do research. Like learning how to build a lawn mower so I could have a character believably break it apart for repairs.
....God I do a lot of research that doesn’t go into the actual fics. Because all I need, really, in the confidence of what I’m doing to be the character and describe an action here or there.
Fic I spent the least time on: Probably something drabble related? Or maybe the fic I did that was just me venting out emotions because I was feeling guilty? ‘A Mother’s Intuition’ was written and posted within a couple of hours.
Longest fic: Complicated. The longest thing written is technically an RP, NOT a story. (Different, trust me.) ‘What Happens in Gotham’ has a word count of  207,413. But fic wise at 89,022 word would be ‘The Constant Gardener’ .
Runner up being ‘Priorities’ at little over 87k.
Shortest fic: Drabbles? Uh, let’s see.. Probably from ‘Beauty and Your Worth’, as i think one was literally a paragraph long. ... Speaking of Gummi Bears, I wonder if I still have my notes on the GruffiGusto fic I wanted to write. Something to look into.
Most hits: Apparently ‘Fallen Hard’ at  5354
Most kudos: Also ‘Fallen Hard’ at 518. There... were more fans of Milo Murphy’s Law than I realised.
Most comment threads: ‘Fallen Hard’, 193 comments. ‘What Happens in Gotham’ following at 185.
Most bookmarks: .... that’s something people care about? I hardly ever bookmark things, since I read it in one go. But... I can look?
Ah.... ‘Fallen Hard’. 63
Total word count: 971,833 Oh hey! Almost a million. That’s something to celebrate.
Favorite fic I wrote: 'Knights of Dobenshire’. Hands down. (With ‘Heart of the Cards’ being very close.) I like writing road trip styled stories. It allows many things to happen within the narrative. BUT, ‘Knights of Dobenshire’ wins because it was such a satisfying conclusion of this build up, you know? Scrooge is finally no longer just putting up with the relationship with Fenton, but fully embracing it. That surprise feeling that hits him when he realizes, dear lord, he IS attracted to Fenton beyond affection.
It hits me more than a mutual pining because there I KNOW they will get together. But here? While writing with Moonie? I DIDN’T KNOW! I was worried in the end we’d have to write another fic to finally reach that step. Scrooge is stubborn and does what he wants, let me tell ya.
Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: 'Fallen Hard’, ‘Season of Miracles’, ‘Going with the Flow’, pretty much anything that isn’t complete. BUT, not posted, I really want to get back to more of the stories planned in the McCrack series. It was a ship I kinda made from the ground up, with nobody caring about it in the beginning. So it feels very important to see that series through.
Share a bit of a WIP or a story idea you’re planning on:
... Actually, I can share something from 'Donald’s Party (Working Title)’. @swampy-tiefling and I started. Just the first scene to get you guys hooked.
Donald took a deep breath of air from the doorway of the house and sighed, once again pleased to find himself at his home away from home. Traveling the seas and exploring the world with the navy were its own rewards, he supposed, but there would never be anything quite like the countryside-- the middle aged mallard having practically been raised on Grandma Duck’s farm. Donald Duck was happy to be on shore-- his naval carrier being docked for the week in Duckburg as they replenished supplies and took care of whatever repairs that were needed. Whatever excuse his bosses wanted to use were fine by him, he was just happy to not be scrubbing decks for a change!
That didn’t, however, mean he was able to rest and relax-- as the duck was startled out of his thoughts as somebody bumped into him. That somebody was his grandmother as she came to, just having caught her plate of cookies before they fell.
“My land, Donald! What in the world are you doing hiding here when you should be meetin’ and greetin’ the guests?”
Donald ignored the woman’s soft glare as he waved her off, using his other hand to steal a cookie in the process. Stuffing it in his mouth, he murmured out a response.
“Phooey, they’re just relatives.”
“Even more of a reason to go out and talk to them.” Before the sailor could argue, Grandma Duck placed the plate of treats into his hands. “And put these out on the snack table while you’re at it. Poor Fethry is looking peckish.”
Donald rolled his eyes, but otherwise did as he was told. Wasn’t it just like life to make him work at his own welcome home party? Walking towards the open yard where the party was taking place, it didn’t take long to reach the table, where his cousins were already gathered around as they chat.
This instantly caught the attention of the lankier duck, his gaze zoning in as he smiled widely towards Donald in greeting.
“Well if it ain’t the guest of honor, with snacks to boot!” Fethry leaned closer, his red hat wobbling with him as he continued to inquire. “Say, cuz, ya wouldn’t happen to know if these are gluten free, would ya?”
Donald gave him an unimpressed look.
“You’re not going on another crazy diet, are ya?” Though, in all honesty, he was more worried his looney cousin might try to drag him along-- and after months of eating nothing but mush, he would NOT miss out on his first chance to pig out on actual home cooked meals.
"Not crazy at all, actually!" Fethry grinned that goofy grin. "See, it's all right here; Gluten Free; It's the Way to Be' !" he shoved a rather lengthy-looking hard cover book in Donald's face. Donald had no choice but to stare at it, the words all blurring together from its close proximity to his eyes. The offending object remained there for only a second, however, before it was yanked back, the nutty mallard already busy flipping through it.
"Let's see, here, there's a fascinating chapter I think you should-- Don?"
Phew, that had been close. Donald was still in sneaking away mode, and jumped and yelped when he was tapped on the shoulder. Oh no. He'd been caught, after all. He slowly turned, with a forced, toothy grin, to face his fate.
A wave of relief washed over him when he saw his girlfriend, Daisy, smiling sweetly at him, instead.
“And where do you think you’re sneaking off to, Mister? You’ve been gone for so long, and here we are, with you haven’t even given me a kiss ‘hello’ yet.”
Now there was something Donald didn’t mind doing, as his girlfriend leaned in her face for her reward. Wrapping his arms around her, he planted the biggest of smooches to her temple.
“Gaww, I’m sorry Daisy. I really did miss you.”
This earned him a soft smile, as it was Daisy’s turn to kiss him on the forehead.
“And I missed you, hun. Now, tell me… why WERE you sneaking around?”
“Grandma put me on entertainment duty.”
“Well, “ his girlfriend began, “it IS your party, after all. They came to see you, seems fair to me.” This made the sailor groan as she looked at him unsympathetically. Rolling her eyes, the reporter sarcastically patted her boyfriend in comfort. “There there. Now don’t go sneaking off for real, the boys will be arriving soon. And Grandma tells me Uncle Scrooge will be bringing along a special guest.”
“Special guest?” Donald asked incredulously. “Like who?” This caused Daisy’s eyes to glimmer all the more in mischief, a look that told him that she knew something he didn’t know. And that something was big news, if he was reading her right.
“Oh, nobody TOO special, I suppose,” Daisy was stalling, and it was driving Donald up the wall. The duck woman continued her teasing. “Nobody except your uncle’s new date friend.”
"Date friend?" Donald practically exclaimed, prompting Daisy's grin to grow all the more smug.
"Yep! You've missed quite a bit since you've been away, you know."
"No kidding...well I'll be..." Donald was shaking his head, but he was smiling. Uncle Scrooge, dating, at his age... it was nothing short of a miracle. It was about time, too!
"Meanwhile, why don't you go say hi to the rest of the guests? I know it's hard..." she rolled her eyes. "but at least make an effort, okay? Thanks, hun!"
Donald's heart fluttered as she smooched his cheek, and left. He glanced out over the yard, and saw quite a few familiar faces; Gus, Ludwig, Gladstone... heck, even Gyro Gearloose had shown up!
He sighed, but this one wasn't a sigh of pure despair. It did feel nice to be home, surrounded by people who most likely cared, and his nephews were even going to show up soon. Not to mention, he'd get to tease his uncle for finally taking his advice on the whole dating thing.
That alone gave Donald the pep in his step he needed as he threw himself back into the party-- where he knew his crazed family would be waiting for him.

Race in 5e: Who Is at Your Table?
I had to write an argumentative essay for one of my classes this semester. I was really into the idea I had, and gave it a shot! I think this might be one of the best pieces I’ve ever written.
Word count: 2995 TW: Discussions of race science, orientalism, and references to white supremacist rhetoric
Writing is difficult, and it’s even more difficult to write collaboratively. This applies to TTRPG as much as it applies to novels. Sure, the DM could simply railroad the players into sessions of combat, lock them into a certain path, or make their other options so terrible that they simply must go the way the story is leading, but it’s bad practice. After all, though it’s not a traditional story, written down in book form for distribution, TTRPG relies on the interplay between the DM’s idea for what should happen in the story, and the players’ ideas. Unlike writing a book, however, TTRPGs rely on another influence, rather than just the set of people who have agreed to tell a story. There’s always at least one other person in the situation, who might be completely unknown to the DM and players. I refer, of course, to the game designer. TTRPGs have far more freedom than video games, but the decisions made by the game designer have the same amount of weight in both mediums. In Skyrim, for example, this looks like a prioritization of combat mechanics over puzzle solving mechanics or relationship mechanics. Though both are implemented in the game, there’s not nearly as many options in playstyle for relationships, or variation in puzzle types, for it to be considered a romance game, or a puzzle game. In TTRPG, the influence of the designer is often far less apparent. In 5e, your character can do basically whatever they want so long as the other people at the table agree that it’s something they want to interact with. However, with some exception, you will not be able to run a game set, for example, in real-world Chicago or on a transport vessel in space. Players tend to be locked into a fantasy setting. Like Skyrim, 5e is a system that prioritizes combat in a magical, pseudo-European medieval setting. It’s a mix of mechanics, and built-in worldbuilding that can allow us to come to this conclusion - each spell, if it doesn’t explicitly add or remove hit points from a target, changes the rules for when and how combat can happen, and each class is described in their flavor text in high fantasy terms, often opening with the examples of ways each one can be useful in combat. True as all this may be, it is, at its core a neutral thing, and I find myself blessed to occasionally be at the tables of others as a game designer and homebrewer. All games must make assumptions about the kind of game players want, and must do their best to fulfil those expectations, the same way a speaker might attempt to predict the thoughts, previous knowledge, and counter-arguments of their audience. However, in 5e, there lies a certain set of assumptions that I personally find troubling, and in fact in need of some serious reworking. The way that race functions in 5e represents an old-fashioned way of viewing the world. In the most direct terms, yeah, it’s kinda racist. Therefore, the assumptions 5e makes in their race system, represented in mechanics that both promote archaic ways of thinking and force the narrative in directions the players and DM may be uncomfortable with, means that it is time to either dramatically change the way race works, or pass over the system entirely.
When a DM is preparing to start a new game of 5e, one very good place to start is the Dungeon Master’s Guide, or DMG. In it, theoretically, are the tools for DMs and players alike to better understand exactly what the game they are playing looks like. In many ways, it’s a behind the scenes look at what goes into planning a session. For example, each “encounter”, or a portion of the game in which the players fight enemies or find ways around them, there’s a bit of calculation which can tell you what enemies will be appropriate for your party size and level. However, in a new game, before even doing that, you should go to the beginning of chapter 1, on page 9. It lists the assumptions the rules make about your setting, which is a helpful tool for anyone attempting to rectify the base rules with a far-out, high-concept world. They are as follows: “Gods Oversee the World”, “Much of the World is Untamed”, “The World is Ancient”, “Conflict Shapes the World’s History”, and “The World is Magical”. On paper, that’s all you need to know (though it might be worth noting that on page 43 the book contradicts this and gets more specific about what sort of multiverse is required to support the rules). These are five basic rules anyone can follow, rules that most people working to create a fantasy setting would have followed anyway, especially in such a combat-focused system. However, in the Player’s Handbook, (abbreviated as PHB) there are additional assumptions about the setting you’ll be playing in, most notably in the section on the different races that appear in 5e. For starters, each race has a small box that explains how the other races in the game are likely to view them. Taken from page 37, when the book is discussing how Gnomes (a small race of humanoids with large heads and thin limbs) think about their place among other races, “It's rare for a gnome to be hostile or malicious unless he or she has suffered a grievous injury. Gnomes know that most races don't share their sense of humor, but they enjoy anyone's company just as they enjoy everything else they set out to do.” They give no explanation for why gnomes tend to be “Good”, in terms of 5e’s morality system. Perhaps this isn’t an oversight, and instead they are allowing you to fill in the blanks yourself? Do the gnomes perhaps have free healthcare, while some others do not?
I am of course being facetious. I am certain the creators didn’t think quite so far ahead, and instead just wanted to paint a picture of the world they envisioned. It’s not some great sin of design, of course, to do this, and I will admit I am guilty of it in my own design. However, this is just one of the smaller examples of 5e making decisions for the DM and the players. Unlike some other portions of the rules, that brief note can be ignored with little to no need for creating a replacement. You could just as easily scribble the note out of the book, and leave a black sharpie stain where it once sat. Unfortunately, there are other decisions made about race that are much harder to ignore without a level of homebrewed (or player-created) mechanics. For example, a little later, on page 43, the book tells you about the specific mechanical benefits that half-orcs get. Two in particular stand out to me as disturbing. The first, Menacing, means that “You gain proficiency in the Intimidation skill”. The other is Savage Attacks, which reads “When you score a critical hit with a melee weapon attack, you can roll one of the weapon's damage dice one additional time and add it to the extra damage of the critical hit”. There is no way in which these cannot be seen as narrative decisions on the part of the creators. Exactly what is it about an orc’s presence that would mean it is more intimidating than any other person? One could surmise that, perhaps they are much larger than most people, or that their rarity means that people are not used to their size and tusks. Perhaps I only speak for myself, but I do not often find myself intimidated by people who look different from what I am used to. The explanation the rules provide is that full-blooded-orcs are barbaric raiders, who wantonly destroy and kill, and are considered evil. Why is it, however, that there’s an entire group of people, people with thoughts, feelings, social structures, who can produce viable offspring with members of other groups of people, that the book deems evil? I submit that, in the minds of the creators, there is some sort of orientalist mystique behind the savage barbarian, one that is physically superior, and yet is still no more than fodder to be torn through by the heroes of the story. This isn’t even the worst example of racism built into the game, but to explain this next portion, I will need to explain a concept.
At its base level, phrenology is, as per the Encyclopedia Britannica, “the study of the conformation of the skull as indicative of mental faculties and traits of character, especially according to the hypotheses of Franz Joseph Gall”. Gall, born in 1758, measured the heads of his colleagues, convicts, and people in asylums, in order to determine traits such as intellect and potentiality for criminal behavior. As with many things invented in late 18th century Europe, this practice was used to fuel European imperialism. The article Of ‘Native Skulls’ and ‘Noble Caucasions’: Phrenology in Colonial South Africa, by Andrew Bank, explains very quickly that “The leading proponents of the new discipline almost uniformly adapted their science of the brain to issues of racial differentiation”. I assume that from here it isn’t difficult to see the direction I am heading with this. Elves, Tieflings, Humans, and Gnomes are given bonuses to Intelligence. Dwarves, Humans, and Elves are given bonuses to Wisdom. Elves, Half-Elves, Humans, Tieflings, Dragonborn, and Halflings are given bonuses to Charisma. Of the races present in the PHB, Half-Orcs are the only ones that don’t get any bonuses to the so-called “Mental Stats”. Physical stats, on the other hand, include Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution, and Half-Orcs get bonuses to Strength and Constitution. In mechanical terms, this leads to a fairly good balance. The other classes serve as either well-rounded jacks-of-all-trades, or are specialized for certain casters, or help fit an archetype of dexterous fighter/caster combinations, while the Half-Orcs are specialized for non-caster tanks, such as the Barbarian or the Fighter. This makes narrative sense as well; if Half-Orcs are raised by the orcish side of their family, they are far more likely to be brutal in martial combat, trained to fight and kill anyone who might have supplies or treasure for them.
However much this might “make sense”, I have to ask why this was an addition to the game. I see three possible answers, and by my approximation, they are likely to all be true. The first is that the creators wanted more narrative control than they let on. The second is that they needed those stats to be stand-in numbers to represent various types of spellcaster and are simply ignorant to their implications. The third is that the creators simply find race science unobjectionable. Earlier, I suggested that the game designer joins the players and the DM at the table, through their work. At my table, ignorance and suggestions that some races are simply more intellectually powerful than others is not tolerated, and I should only hope you feel the same way.
At this point, you’re thinking so loud that I can practically hear it, even in the past. “Ignorance isn’t tolerated? What if the ignorant person in question is willing to change, and well-meaning?”, but if this is what you were thinking, I say with the deepest respect that you’re being just a touch too literal. Of course, if I’ve sat down and agreed to play with someone I know, I am willing to go over why what they said made me uncomfortable. TTRPG is a dialogue, one where the players and the DM must negotiate, not battle, for the story they want to tell, and where everyone must speak up when something happens that makes them upset. The difference between a literal player’s presence and the game designer’s figurative presence is that there is no arguing with a book. In some ways, it’s easier to change a book’s mind. Simply write your own rules, and move on, there’s no need to debate an actual person. You may also be thinking that 5e simply utilizes the mechanics of previous editions. While that is technically true, what is the point of creating a new edition if you can’t change things moving forward? And what’s more, each of my criticisms can be moved onto 1e. The biggest criticism I expect against my argument however, isn’t any of this. Obviously, only one of the races in 5e is human. Nothing in 5e indicates that one race of human is significantly better or worse than any other race of human, and so surely it can’t be racism. Again, you may be thinking a little too literally. In the world supposed by 5e, each race is seen as a person, and (depending on the setting and narrative your group constructs) has the same rights to freedom and life, and yet some are just more mentally skilled than others as soon as they are born. How often in reality do the dregs of society say something along the lines of “it isn’t that I think [members of a certain race] aren’t people or should be enslaved, it’s just that I think that white people are inherently smarter” to make an effort of sounding more reasonable? It isn’t that I think the races in 5e are 1:1 parallels to real-world racist stereotypes. Instead, it’s a matter of philosophy, race-based pseudoscience, and ideology that makes 5e (and previous editions) racist, without major rules upheavals.
However, in some cases, it would require such an overhaul of a system that it isn’t worth it. Most people would look at the rules for 5e’s races and pale at the thought of changing it completely. Do you get rid of stats completely? Do you select whatever stats you want by yourself? Perhaps you instead get certain bonuses when you select your class, rather than your race? These are all possibilities, and I have played games that utilized some of these options. Aside from the strength of reducing the amount of racism in 5e, it also increases the amount of choice a player has when creating their character. It isn’t unheard of to have a dwarf that uses Dexterity and Charisma as it’s primary abilities, but it is poorly optimized in comparison to the options of Half-Elf or Tiefling, and though it takes a bit more work than just handing a player the PHB, I believe it is worth it in the end. There’s no shame in admitting defeat, though. It’s not every day that I feel like fixing another person’s game, and I design games. And I do it for fun. It is the talent I am blessed with, and my lifelong burden. I understand not wanting to put in the effort. However, my suggestion isn’t that you walk away from TTRPG forever, scorned by the problems in 5e, never to roll a die again. Instead, it might be worth your time looking into other systems of play. Whenever I recommend a system to someone who has only played 5e and is looking for a similar aesthetic, I always turn them toward my personal favorite, Dungeon World (abbreviated as DW). DW is, in many ways, the game that I thought I was playing when I first started playing 5e. Looking through the PHB, it seems very comprehensive to incoming players. But to go back to the example of Skyrim, there’s a suggestion when you start it for the first time that you are about to enter a world of endless possibility, only to be shoehorned into a game that directly prioritizes combat. Dungeon World, while it has far less comprehensive rules for combat, one of its biggest strengths is that it has far fewer rules in general. That isn’t to say that it’s harder to follow. Instead of having intense, complicated rules for combat, every moment in the game is subject to “moves” in which, when you say that your character is doing something, the GM - Game Master, in contrast to the Dungeon Master of 5e - can tell you that the outcome is uncertain, and that it might be difficult. When this happens, you roll two six-sided dice, and the game provides very comprehensive rules to help you resolve it. When you choose a race, you get one extra move and nothing else - an option easily alterable, if one finds it uncomfortable. Blades in the Dark, a similar fantasy system, resolves roles in a similar manner, once again, with a much lesser emphasis on violence, and a much stronger emphasis on magic heists. It’s races have no mechanical benefit, and can be completely ignored if so desired.
Creating a system is difficult, I know. Playtesting aside, it’s a combination of finding something special that you want to create, deciding what the players will be looking for, and editing draft after draft. It’s also difficult, both logistically and emotionally, to kick someone out of a campaign. It’s my belief though that a line should be drawn when someone in the game insists on adding not only social, but biological inferiority to characters of certain races. It’s a privilege to have your work at someone else’s table, and it’s a privilege that can be revoked. Once again, playing 5e isn’t some ethical failing, or mortal offence. However, it is worth evaluating what changes can be made to 5e’s race system, and if it’s worth it to you to not switch to another system. If you have found any of this compelling, consider your other options. In addition to what I’ve already mentioned, there are designers out there who can bring you into space, cities filled with dark magic and/or under control by cosmic monsters, or honey conventions where there are a few bears trying to steal stuff. Next time you get the urge to roleplay, just consider what I’ve said here, and think about who you’re inviting to your table.

So how about you tell me a bit about what you're upto? What's going on in your campaigns this week? :3
This week nothing, because I have been busy with real life, I didn’t have time to prepare. ^^’ But I can tell you what happened in the last sessions up to this point!
The quarantine story arc started with everybody going to a student fashion show. Alexia and Isa had been invited to be models, but once there and with a few events, both Permid and Lyn also asked to join. However, in the middle of it, they realized their tech wizard Raph was... not online. Which was impossible : Raph is ALWAYS online! They tried to contact people in Saclay and couldn’t get anybody. Worried, they drove with a few other people from Saclay, over to a secret entrance. (I took some liberty with reality, based around the historical fact that there are aquaduct networks that used to bring water from Saclay to Versaille’s castle for the fountains of the palace. :) ) Using those tunnels, they managed to get inside... All of Saclay was under a severe quarantine : no radio, no internet, no phone lines... Everything was cut off. Knowing this had to be about the magical events happening around town, the group realized they would be hunted down sooner or later. In any case, Salin and Saka (both from Mira) coulldn’t be found by the government, so they offered to get a few of the kids and go over to the other world, Mira, to hid in there for a week or so until the search let up.
Saka, Isa, Lyn and Permid agreed to go with Salin to Mira, while Ivan and Alexia decided to stay to keep an eye on things and protect who needed it. They also had not heard about Damiana in a while...
The A team, in Mira, landed at the White tower as usual, where Master Kavoleg was in the middle of a meeting with representants of each nation, informing them about the existence of Earth, and the imminent crisis it faced of having magical resurface, all unsupervised and without direction. After most left, they met the Human representant of this council :
Tumblr media
He seemed very curious about this new human-only world with no magic. They all discussed the current state of things, and the worry that if there was already a military presence during this “quarantine”, things might be a little difficult to resolve peacefully...
Still, since they had a week of down time, Saka asked to start looking for his missing brother, Sisik, that had last been since just before the whole thing. They headed to the port town where he had been seen last, and started looking. They heard about the fact that Sisik was looking into disappearances that seemed to target specifically magic users, and just as they exited the building, someone tried to get saka alone in an alleyway. While Isa was 100% here to help, Saka and Permid saw right through it, and managed to stop the kidnapping attempt peacefully (I will never say enough how proud I am of my players for going out of their way to not be murder hobos! ;W;)
They learned that those kidnappers had no real idea who they worked for, they were just there to subdue people and pass them over to someone else, and got a better cut if the people were magic users. They handed the kidnappers to the town’s guard, and Saka immediately stormed out, realizing that this was a serious issue, and his brother might be somewhere in there. He went to the Axis outpost, and was told that if he could provide something that belonged to Sisik, they could attempt to locate him.
Which meant They had to go back to Saka’s home, in Iridescence, the land of dragonborns. A place he had avoided at any cost for three years... Still, for his brother, he pushed through and went, with the others in tow. It didn’t take very long for his anxiety to return to be explained, as they ran into his ex-lover, Zahz. Apparently their relationship had been toxic, between Zahz’s abuse of control, and Saka’s desperation to be loved at any cost, and the break-up had been messy. But it had been enough of a shock that Zahz had decided to work on himself, or at least start the process to become a better person. The two awkardly reconnected, wary of falling into old habits but still very much in love with the other. Saka also visited his parents again after 3 years, and after some scolding for not giving news himself, he was given one of Sisik’s baby teeth to help locate him.
The process didn’t seem to go through, until Permid realized the problem was that Sisik was in a different plane of existence. With Salin’s help, they devised a spell to locate the plane in which Sisik was being held, and once they had this information, they adapted the locate spell to be able to reach Sisik. They very quickly realized he was in the Underdark (which I THOUGHT was a different plane for some reason, so woops, now the Underdark is a different plane in my world. XD), and that his magic had been drained from him to the point of leaving him barely alive. There was also mention of a Wish spell, that left Permid very worried... Saka on the other end focused on the fact that magic drain at this degree was not only against the Axis’ codes, but also a warning sign of a potential catastrophy about to happen. He made a report to his superior in the Axis, and called for backup. They agreed to start organizing a strike team to take this threat down and save the captured civilians, giving the group a few days to get ready before the attack while they located precisely where the prison was.
Lyn, Isa and Permid had a moment of hesitation : they came here to hide for a while, not to be part of a strike team and potentially kill people! Salin reminded them that they always had the opportunity to leave if they wanted, but she would be doing everything she could to keep them safe and away from the main battle. In the end, they decided to stay and assist Saka. -Which Salin was very glad for, as it would force Saka to hold back to keep them safe too, keeping him from putting himself in danger recklessly like he had a tendency to. A little bit of manipulation Zahz reproached her later, but to each their way of keeping their friends safe. ;)
The B team had their own adventure in the meantime! :) As a doctor, Ivan realized very quickly that the Tieflings under his care were being brought to a field hospital the government had put in place, away from prying eyes, essentially in a temporary military base. VERY unhappy about this, he started organizing a passive resistance with the nurses and other doctors, while making sure he could go to said hospital and visit the tieflings himself.
Damiana, who had started showing tiefling traits, had been kept in her own room without any phone or internet for a week now by her very religious grandmother, in the hopes of forcing the devil out of her. All it did was push her to escape her house once she heard that her family wanted to send her to a covenant essentially, so god could help her repent. None of that for Dami, thank you! She eventually found her way to the student dorms, and was given a place to stay for the moment, and a way to disguise herself to look like she used to.
On her side, Alexia had been keeping an eye on her and her patron’s territory : the school. To their credit, the military presence here wasn’t abusive, just checking for anybody’s ID as they passed by. Soon, though, a different kind of government official showed up, walking straight to her : enter Special Agent Dyla Ross, that I’ve spoken about at length already. XD He presented himself, and asked Alexia, as a person of interest, to follow him to the field camp. There, a small firing squad suddenly appeared, weapons trained on her, and got ready to fire. Alexia decided to protect herself with mage armor, while Ivan (who was just coming back from the field hospital and saw his student in danger) rushed over, projecting an illusion in front of her for added protection. The weapons clicked, unloaded from the start, and the firing squad moved back into their hiding spot while Dylan casually walked back in. This had been a test to see what their first reflex to danger was : if they had attacked the firing squad, it would have looked very bad for them, but instead they chose to be safe. He then got them both into his office and got as much information from them as he could. Ivan being very forthcoming and open with information, even helpful, seemed to surprise Dylan deeply, but he appreciated it. There was only one attempted lie, that Dylan dissuaded quickly. Ivan offered to send Peter his way, since the vampire was originally from Mira, to get more intel on the new world.
The next day, Alexia and Damiana met a new friendly face over breakfast : Tethys, an exchange student that seemed to also have magic abilities. Shortly after, Dylan showed up again, offering to drive the kids over to the atomic research facility next to the Synchrotron to test out some theories about magic. Under the supervision of Archeon White talon, Permid’s dad and local scientist, they set up different dummies and tries spells on them. Everything was recorded in any ways science knew how : heat, motion, air displacement, visual, slow motion... After a few shots, Dylan got on the field and asked to be fired at with magic. Everybody immediately protested, but he insisted. He tried to use deflect missile on a few things, quickly realizing he could not actually catch magic, and after a round of test got himself healed on camera for the record.
They then drove to Ivan’s house (because Dylan wanted to try and see Peter again), where the doctor and Dylan spoke some more while the team welcomed a second new face : Shanti! :) Recently turned tiefling too, plagued by voices in her mind for a while, Shanti got to meet Omnideus and become a cleric like Ivan. They caught her and tethys up to speed, and everybody turned in for the day.
Next day! :D While Shanti was getting used to the new house, Oni came by the see if she needed anything (since he’s been adopted more or less by the Standons, and is still looking for purpose). After a short talk, shanti noticed Omnideus staring ominously in the direction of the school, and they both hurried there. At school, a fire alarm had gone off, and Alexia, Dami and Tethys started evacuating, when Alexia was informed by her patron that something bad was going on. They quickly realized there was a student in distress, in the middle of a wild magic surge, unfortunately wrecking havoc on the school ground as she looked for help. They got there, along with Shanti while Oni kept the military forces from doing anything stupid and making things worse. Damiana figured out that they needed to help the student focus on a spell to expel the excess magic, and with reassuring words and a comforting, confident presence, they helped her calm down enough to cast a spell, resolving the surge as peacefully as they could. (Rip school windows) And guess who showed up! :D Dylan, again, having heard that something was going on at the school. He took in the situation, forced to recognize that these kids knew what they were doing. He also confronted Alexia about things she was not telling him on purpose, and as a show of what her patron could do, she made the statue right behind her brandish its stone cane straight at Dylan’s face, not touching him but barely. (Dylan had to recognize that yeah, ok, she was being honest about her patron being In the statue...)
He then told them to all come at the field camp tonight, as they needed to discuss how to handle this whole situation, and make a proper plan before his superior, the General in charge of the quarantine, showed up to demand a report and a plan of action.
And that’s it! :D So next time will be a big session : between storming the underdark fortress and deciding on what the world should know of what’s going on here, big things are going to happen, as we reach this arc’s finale! :D And after that.. Beach episode on Mira! ;) (And then we move to the next and final story arc! ;) )

An old fandom friend @stardustandseas asked for some Caleb whump recs, so here!! Have forty eight of my personal favourites (alongside some quality angst-fic because that’s in the general spirit of whump, too). Feel free to reblog this post and add your own faves / plug your own writing! And I’m sure more excellent hurt!Caleb and sad!Caleb will be written in the future, so I may reblog this and add to it at some point.
If one of your fics is listed here and you’d like your tumblr url added to the credits, drop me a message and I’ll try to do so.
(Please check the tags/warnings on the fic itself. I’ve tried to tag for spoilers as best I can - I’m counting spoilers as Caleb backstory stuff and recent [as of August 2018] campaign developments. I’ve not tagged triggers on these, but several involve graphic descriptions of violence, sexual assault, and other similar upsetting things – such is the nature of whump.)
-
“Betrothed” by MeBeShe (@matt-the-blind-cinnamon-roll) [Caleb/Molly; 70k WIP]
After nearly a decade of war, Archmage Caleb Widogast has brokered a peace with the Xhorasian empire. It comes at the cost of his hand in marriage. They send the Nonagon, leader of their bloodhunters, to marry him. He wasn't expecting a beautiful tiefling. He wasn't expecting Mollymauk Tealeaf.
[A truly delicious mix of slow-burn relationship, sexual tension and pining, and ongoing physical health issues and angst on Caleb’s side. It’s both soothing and emotionally satisfying, it’s currently my “save to read before going to bed” fic, and I love it so much.]
-
“the mist upon the hill” by BucketofWater (@ereborslionheart) [Caleb/Molly; 80k WIP]
Caleb is a mottled canvas of thin, white lacerations so many that Nott can hardly begin to count them all, she wouldn’t even know where to begin.
Or, the soulmate au where some soulmates share injuries and Caleb is very tired and very sore.
[My other current “save to read before going to bed” fic. It’s got everything – slow-burn, soulmates, angst, Caleb trying to hide his injuries, miscommunication… I also adore this one and honestly, the whump is just so satisfying.]
-
“Traveling Hearts” by CatKing_Catkin (@pangurbanthewhite) [Caleb/Molly; maybe spoilers?; 117k
A figure from Lucien's past shows up to collect on an old arrangement. When Molly doesn't want to talk business, the stranger takes him and the Mighty Nein for himself instead.
Caleb is only just able to get Jester to safety in time. But when the rest of his friends fall victim to their captor's vampiric thrall, that leaves him trapped and alone against the twisted attentions and easy cruelty of a wizard more powerful than he's ever dreamed of being.
Jester struggles to understand her enemies and make a plan of attack. Her friends are counting on her to save them, even if some of them don't know it anymore, and so she is determined to be the light in the darkness for them and all the people of Tanner's Crossing.
With a little bit of magic and a little bit of research and a whole lot of determination as they fight their own battles, Caleb and Jester might just save their friends before they lose themselves in the bargain.
[I’m… genuinely unsure if anything I could say about this fic would do it justice. Please, please read it if you haven’t already, because I adore everything about it and it’s delightful and stressful and upsetting and plotty and incredibly whumpy aahhh. I’d probably put it in the top ten fics I’ve ever read, which is high praise indeed.]
-
“The Trauma Cafe” by MeBeShe (@matt-the-blind-cinnamon-roll) [Caleb/Molly; major spoilers; 114k WIP]
There's a cafe that specializes in rehabilitating people with trauma. That cafe was home to Mollymauk Tealeaf. Now it's home to cult survivor Caleb Widogast.
[Another of the big campaign two fics that I suspect is something of a fandom classic by now. It’s less whump and more angst, past whump, and recovery, but I do suspect there might be some whump in the next few chapters. We’ll see. You absolutely have to read it, though, as with the above three.]
-
“The Mighty Fieber” by hufflepirate (@hufflepirate) [Gen; (major?) spoilers; 13k]
When Caleb gets very sick, the rest of the Nein take care of him. The fever draws some of Caleb's issues to the front, but if Beau can figure out how to use punching for medicinal purposes, she can figure out how to talk about feelings. Maybe. Caleb isn't used to being cared about, but sometimes if it's masked enough, he can navigate it anyway.
[Hey you know how good the “comes down with a fever and people don’t notice at first, and then they do and are really scared by how ill the person is” trope is? This fic is basically Entirely That.]
-
“starwalker” by ashinan (@ashinan) [Gen; 8k]
Those whose souls are claimed by the Fey are to be feared. Briderall learns this lesson the night Caleb is taken.
[There’s only a little whump in this, but it’s high quality whump, and the rest of the fic is so fucking good honestly. I adore terrifying unknowable eldritch creatures that dote on humans so...]
-
“Oversharing” by Verity_Kindle [Caleb/Fjord; 7k]
When a spell goes wrong, the group tries to deal with the fallout. Fjord’s biggest concern is for Caleb’s well-being, while Caleb’s is...complicated.
Otherwise titled, Why Magic and Secrets Don’t Mix: The Autobiography of Caleb Widogast.
[Old and now jossed, but I still love it - accidental / uncontrollable telepathy is such a good fic conceit, and this one has it in spades. Somewhat au since this was written with the first few eps of the new campaign, iirc, but I adore it nonetheless.]
-
“More Than This” by CatKing_Catkin (@pangurbanthewhite) [Gen; spoilers; 22k]
The Empire got a lot more unfriendly towards “unauthorized” mages, after the attack. Molly hadn’t even been aware that “unauthorized” mages were a thing beforehand, but suddenly they were. That was just the way things worked in the Empire, now more than ever, and it was one more thing The Mighty Nein had to roll with.
(Or, post Episode 12, the Mighty Nein get in trouble with the law by virtue of being a group containing a goblin, two tieflings, and a couple of mages. Caleb pulls off some heroics to let them get away, and by the time they find him again he's been hit with the Feeblemind spell as punishment. Rather fumbling attempts at coping ensue while the rest of the group tries to fix things.)
[I honestly can’t remember a Huge amount about this, but I remember it being angsty and kind and gentle, and I remember loving it. It’s also written by CatKing, and I love All their stuff, so that’s a point in its favour. Plus, feeblemind has such good angst and h/c potential tbh.]
-
“This is Not an Asphyxiation Kink” by Catzgirl (@fenesvir) [Caleb/Fjord; 3.5k]
Caleb is hiding some secrets from the gang, and they come back to haunt him at the very worst of times. Fjord is there to catch him.
[Hey remember when we were all convinced that Caleb had been waterboarded / drowned at some point, and was terrified of water? That was a good time tbh.]
and, from the same series, “The Leaving of Caleb Widogast” [Caleb/Fjord; 31k]
When there's no way out, Caleb makes his own.
[This is… honestly, very fucking good, and gripped me the whole way through. A beautiful mix of Caleb’s PoV and the panic of the others trying to find him, engaging all the way through to the climax.]
-
“the sea, take us back” by vannral (@vannral) [Caleb/Fjord; 9k]
The sea says: You are not welcome here. This place is not for you.
Caleb Widogast fights with everything he has to get back what was once ripped from him.
[A fun twist on the “Caleb is a werewolf” theory that everyone had at one point. Or, well. Not so fun for Caleb, but fun for the whump fans. Very intense and dramatic, very satisfying ending.]
-
“confession / absolution” by duckbunny (@duckbunny) [Caleb/Molly; spoilers; 8k]
Molly risks a glance over his shoulder – Caleb is a private kind of man, he won’t want to be stared at – and sees eyes so wide that Molly might have been ten foot of venom and claws. “No,” he says, slowly, “I don’t think you want to be alone. What’s up?"
[More emotional h/c and angst than whump, technically, but a favourite so I’m including it anyways. Also has some really nice smut as an added bonus, which is always fun.]
-
“[untitled]” by words-writ-in-starlight (@words-writ-in-starlight) [Caleb/Molly; 3k]
viciousmaukeries asked: Molly/Caleb, both of them injured, waking up beside each other. hell, maybe there's even a cave-in somewhere in there?
[Both Caleb and Molly whump, my favourite combination!]
-
“Suggestion” by pok3d3x (@tamiyos-pokedex) [Gen; maybe spoilers?; 6k]
In a world where mind altering magic is cheap, it's unwise to drink alone. The Mighty Nein step in to protect Caleb a little late.
[Caleb gets magic-roofied, and the team closes ranks to protect him and deal with the emotional fallout. Very intense and at times upsetting, but a delightful, emotional read.]
-
“Everything’s Coming Up Flowers” by thismagichour (@calebwidogasts) [Caleb/Fjord; 5k]
The Hanahaki Disease is an illness born from unrequited love, where the victim coughs up flower petals until the love is requited, or death.
Caleb loves Fjord, to the point that it's literally killing him.
[I’m always a slut for the Hanahaki disease trope, which is a cross between soulmates and whump in the best way. Also, this list is uhh… super Widomauk-heavy, so it’s nice to have a wee bit of variation.]
-
“till the last flower” by vannral (@vannral) [Caleb/Fjord; 8k]
The Hanahaki Disease is an illness born from one-sided love, where the patient coughs up flower petals. The infection can be removed through surgery, but the feelings disappear along with the petals.
Caleb Widogast is heartbroken and very tired.
[Hey look, I did say I’m a slut for this trope…]
-
“swallow up the flame like me” by words-writ-in-starlight (@words-writ-in-starlight) [Gen; major spoilers; 8k]
It has been nine days since Fjord, Jester, and Yasha disappeared in silence and left nothing behind them but blood and scuffed grass. When the rest of the Mighty Nein manages to capture someone who might have information, Caleb decides it's time to take things into his own hands and convinces Beau to let him.
[Not… technically whump but it’s such a nice, angsty, awful emotional portrait that I can’t help but include it…]
-
“a country far away as health” by LoosePilgrim [Gen; major spoilers; 2.6k]
In the fall of a certain year, in the north of a certain kingdom, a man took a body to a box and laid the body inside. He walked away from the body, and the body stayed there for many years.
When the body had been a boy (a man; a boy) it had had a good memory.
The body in the box had a good memory too. Here is what the body remembers:
[Kinda experimental and very weird - ymmv on whether it counts as whump, technically speaking - but, as with all the other kid-of-whump things on here, I love it, so. It’s staying.]
-
“be gone” by mnemememory [Gen; maybe spoilers?; 3k]
Beau has had this conversation before, in a different place, with a different man.
(or; beau walks out of a cupboard, and can't seem to find her way back)
[I’m… legit unsure if this should be on here, but it’s gorgeously written, and grindingly dark and unhappy, so I think it’s earned its place.]
-
“Disguise Self” by Agrotera (@agrotera-ilisos) [Caleb/Molly; maybe spoilers?; 10k]
“Even huddled beneath a cold, driving rain, Zadash was a brilliant city. It wasn’t substantially larger than the other cities Molly had visited when he was with the circus, nor was it especially more beautiful. The people certainly weren’t kinder. It stank of mud and horse dung, and the rain only helped to make the smell all the more oppressive. But there were little carts that lined the main avenues, and the proprietors of those little carts would sell you a bladder of still-hot mulled wine and an armful of cardamom and pistachio pastries for two silver coins and a smile.
All things considered—the gnolls, the fool bandits, the gods-be-twice-fucked weather—Molly couldn’t complain.”
It's their first night in Zadash, and Molly needs to get away. Caleb, unsure of Molly's motives, follows him.
[Less whump and more a character portrait with hints of past whump and trauma, with a copious helping of smut, but I love it, it’s on here, deal with it etc. etc. Honestly, I spent the whole time reading this sighing dreamily with delight at the perfect mix of sexy and Concerning, so like. You know it’s gotta be good.]
-
“A puzzled love of the light” by ottertrashpalace [Caleb/Molly; spoilers; 16k WIP]
Molly, possibly the most flamboyant queer individual ever to exist, wound up saving the life of a homophobic Christian picketer. It's not the weirdest thing that's ever happened to him, but suffice to say that it has long-ranging consequences he did not expect.
[Ymmv on the fic’s conceit (I personally enjoy it tbh), but it’s an enjoyable read with plenty of angst and emotional catharsis, and hints of more to come later...]
-
“a lighter in his pocket / a matchbook in his socks” by ScreechTheMighty  (@screechthemighty) [Gen; major spoilers; 11k]
‘and a block full of charred skeletons / closeted, begging to get out’
The ghosts of your past catch up to you eventually. Sometimes, they bring more than just the memories with them.
[Again, unsure if this… technically counts as whump, but there’s enough miserable, stressed, panicking Caleb that I’m going to count it, honestly.]
-
“the echo valley” by vandenburg (@momlymauk) [Caleb/Molly; spoilers; 5k]
Sick from the incessant raining on their way to Shady Creek Run after a job well-done in the Labenda Swamp, Caleb receives some comfort – from Kiri.
[Sickfic!! Sickfic!! Sickfic!!! Also, Kiri being adorable, as an added bonus.]
-
“Snow Rise” by AiraKay [Gen; 1k]
Injured and alone, Caleb Widogast takes a moment to contemplate the falling snow and his place in the world.
[Somewhere between character study and whump, but very lovely.]
-
“Check the Cards” by Catzgirl (@fenesvir) [Caleb/Molly; 3k]
Molly ignores his foresight and everyone suffers for it.
[More from Molly’s PoV as Caleb gets injured, but it’s still a nice fic - very well-written and I love the way the author weaves Molly’s tarot cards into the narrative.]
-
“sunset” by aviators (@farfel) [Caleb/Molly; 3.5k]
Caleb brings a trembling hand up, cupping Molly’s cheek and pressing his thumb to his lips, wetting them with his own blood. “Hush, Mollymauk.”
“No. No,” Molly gasps out, hand meeting Caleb’s and grasping around it until both their knuckles turn white. “You’ve never known me to stop speaking my mind when I’m set on it. I’m not about to stop now, even for you.”
[Dreamy sighs about this fic tbh. Lovely Caleb whump, lovely Molly angst, long and difficult recovery, character introspection… hhh.]
-
“Scorched Bonds” by Akiko_Natsuko [Caleb/Molly; maybe spoilers?; 8k WIP]
“No!” It comes out as a strangled shout, his chest heaving and breaths coming in frantic pants. Too close, he had come so close to surrendering to the charm and if he had…the flames are roaring in his chest now, reminding him of what he can do, what those whispered words could have made him do.'
When a fight goes wrong and magic ensnares the rest of the Nein, Caleb is left alone, facing his friends… his family… and he's forced to make a choice.
[A lovely mix of whump and angst, with the “having to fight your friends” trope, and some aftercare as an added bonus.]
-
“Little Monster” by Lesetoilesfous (@lesetoilesfous) [Gen; 21k]
Nott hasn't been in prison for very long when she gets a cellmate, a human called Caleb.
This story follows the development of an unlikely friendship, and the way it saves two people who'd long since decided to give up on the world.
Or: prison is not the first place Nott imagined she'd find a family, but she isn't complaining.
[A Nott and Caleb meeting fic, with assorted whump and angst and getting out of prison shenanigans. Good, clean straight-up torture for both of them tbh.]
-
“My Friend Filthy” by 99BottlesOfBeerOnTheWall [Gen; maybe spoilers?; 21k]
Nott is a goblin with no friends, and nowhere to go. Caleb is a human with no family, and no hope left. They don’t expect each other, but Caleb is empty, and Nott needs something to care for. So they work with the broken pieces.
Together is better.
[Another, slightly longer variation on the above theme - I just love All the ‘Caleb’s in jail and miserable and barely a human’ fics. This one plays especially hard on the ‘barely a human’ bit, which is delightful.]
-
“twisting the kaleidoscope behind both my eyes” by confines  (@wholeneinyards) [Gen; maybe mild spoilers?; 5k]
Nott and Caleb meet in jail. They escape together and then they survive together.
[A nice whumpy, angsty backstory elaboration piece.]
-
“The Courage and The Fall” by mollymauks [Caleb/Molly; 4k]
Prompt: “Shivering long after everyone else has stopped.” After ending up fighting a battle submerged in a frozen lake, the Mighty Nein strip off in their camp to dry out and warm up. All but one. Content warning: this fic deals quite a lot with scars, if that’s not your cup of tea, maybe avoid.
Teaser: “I’m going to stop you freezing to death, you idiot,” he said simply, hand still extended. Caleb still didn’t move. “Trust me,” Molly murmured, his words only for the darkness and the wizard staring up at him, the firelight glinting on his pale eyes making them look strangely opaque and ghostly. “I should think I’d proved myself quite adept at keeping you alive after all this time.”
Caleb stared at him for another long, thundering heartbeat, then he let a soft laugh huff past his lips. He reached up and grabbed Molly’s forearm, letting him pull him to his feet.
[What kind of whump rec list would this be if I didn’t have a “cuddling for warmth” fic on here…? A terrible one, that’s what.]
-
“Süss” by drekkeri (@tragedyboycentral) [Caleb/Molly; 3k]
Caleb was pretty sure he was dead. It was the only logical explanation.
He was drenched in sweat, trembling, and the mere act of thinking for more than two seconds took more effort than he could manage. As he tried to get out of bed he grabbed onto the wall, holding his head as he saw spots of back.
Yeah, he was definitely dead.
[A lovely fic involving diabetic!Caleb’s blood sugar dropping too low and his friends having to work out what’s wrong and help him. Whumpy, plenty of the ‘panicked confused friends’ trope, and with a happy, fluffy ending.]
-
“A Lovely Man” by Justanotherfangirl [Caleb/Molly; 1.5k]
Caleb gets injured, and Molly can’t keep his feelings for him a secret any longer.
[Whump, love confessions, bleeding out…? What more could you want from a fic.]
-
“Me for You” by MeBeShe (@matt-the-blind-cinnamon-roll) [Caleb/Molly; 5k]
Caleb gets badly wounded when a mission goes awry. Molly uses his Bloodhunter powers to heal him, despite Caleb's protesting.
[Another excellent whumpy character study thing, short and sweet but delightful, fluffy schmoop for an ending.]
-
“Another Part of Surviving” by notsoappropro [Caleb/various; 1.5k]
He doesn’t anticipate it, the first time. He’s head to toe in filth, having slept under trees and in city alleyways for an uncountable number of days on Nott and his neverending escape. The grime under Caleb's fingernails is aggressively visible in a clean store he clearly cannot afford to be in as he counts his silver. He only has four, it’s all they have between the two of them, and it’s many coins short for the medicine they need.
[A kinkmeme fill technically, but angsty enough to be included here, just about. A series of vignettes on the times Caleb is forced to prostitute himself.]
-
“Hot and Cold” by Emberforge [Gen; 3k]
It was all going well, until it wasn't.
[Caleb gets poisoned, and the team deal with it; mild whump, plenty of aftercare and worrying. Short and sweet.]
-
“What Friends Are For” by Justanotherfangirl [Gen; maybe spoilers?; 8k]
It’s been a long time since Caleb had any friends, since he had deserved to have any friends. But with the Mighty Nein, he found himself caring almost in spite of himself. And the Mighty Nein might just care about him too.
[A lovely collection of drabbles exploring Caleb’s relationship with the other members of the Nein, through the medium of whump and comfort/care.]
-
“Here with You” by Akiko_Natsuko [Caleb/Molly; 1.7k]
It was a terrible plan from the start, but it was the only one they had. Fortunately Molly and Caleb were together, and that might just be enough in the face of a situation that brings the past pressing in on them.
[Less physical whump and more delicious descriptions of panic and misery, which imho count as whump / give me the same whump feels as physical whump does. Also, Caleb locked in a cell!]
-
“Dominate Person is Never Really A Good Time” by sterphfy [Gen; 4.5k]
The title kind of sums it up. Some angst, some implied Molly/Caleb, but painfully little physical contact. probably done, but may write a companion later.
[More fun with mind control and hurting friends! I’m predictable in the tropes I like.]
-
“bruises and comfort” by vannral (@vannral) [Caleb/Fjord; 643]
After a random battle, Caleb's less than fine and Fjord's there, helping.
[Pretty much exactly what it says on the tin - Caleb’s hurt, Fjord looks after him and comfort him. Short, satisfying, sweet.]
-
“Hidden and New” by Avorna [Caleb/Nott; 3k]
Fighting a horde illithid is well above their job description.
In the midst of battle, Caleb is caught by a desperate illithid and it decides to play with his more well kept memories.
[On here primarily for the first half, where Caleb nearly gets his brain eaten, and gets thoughts and memories he wants to keep secret broadcast to the MN - which is always a good time.]
-
“Storm After the Calm” by UzbekistanRules [Gen; major spoilers; 1.5k]
Caleb deserves nothing. Or... so he thinks.
[More self-loathing and emotional h/c than whump, but some nice mentions of past whump and tbh panic attacks probably count as whump? The aftercare in this is also very lovely.]
-
“What Was, What Is” by lostsometime [Gen; mild spoilers; 1k]
Caleb would have been able to stop himself from causing collateral damage with his spells, once. He can't now.
[Again, more angst than whump; again, I like it enough to include it here, and also panic attacks / dissociation totally do count as whump in some circumstances tbh.]
-
“Fever Dream” by Chaya (@fieldbears) [Gen; major spoilers; 245]
Someone asked for either Caleb or Molly to be delirious with fever. This is probably the least creatively titled thing I have put up in a while, but at least there's plenty of angst?
[Honourable mention, as it’s a very short little drabble - but what there is of it is delicious, so I couldn’t leave it off.]
-
“Feeblemind” by Chaya (@fieldbears) [Caleb/Molly; spoilers; 13k WIP]
There are some ugly spells out there. Sometimes you just have to do your best to get through it.
[Fun times with the feeblemind spell, and then the emotional fallout from that for the whole group. Bonus Molly angst too, which is always nice! May or may not have been abandoned, but what’s there is somewhat complete in and of itself, so...]
-
“Under His Gaze” by EllenofX [Gen; maybe spoilers?; 4k WIP]
Caleb is a smart man. It is a fact that he is more cautious of now, with how far astray it once led him, but one that is undeniable. So, when a stranger wakes them in the dead of night, it does not take him long to figure out that he and his companions are being toyed with. That they have been toyed with for quite a while, now.
[Another ‘is it abandoned?’ fic - essentially a variation on the theme of ‘Travelling Hearts’ recced above. First chapter seems pretty whumpy though, so fingers crossed it continues!]
-
“Our Early Days Are Always With Us” by sandssavvy (@sandssavvy) [Gen; major spoilers; 8k WIP]
Sometimes the past won't let you rest.
After a run in with Trent, Caleb isn't sure he will ever find rest again.
[Again, unsure if this has been abandoned?? It’s not terribly whumpy as-is, mostly angst, but if it’s not on permanent hiatus then it should get whumpy…]
-
Lastly (and shamelessly), I’m gonna plug my own writing here. The only whumpy fic I’ve written for Caleb is “lesser of two evils” [Gen; 2.4k]:
Caleb’s running a fever by the time the rest of the Mighty Nein find him.
He was expecting that much – he’s done this before, after all, knows that it’s a bad idea and will not go well in the long run. However, bleeding out in the middle of a forest is also not a good idea, and will also not go well in the long run. The difference is that bleeding out in the middle of a forest will go exceptionally poorly in the short run, so it’s a lesser-of-two evils sort of thing. He’s well-versed in Faustian bargains, made both unwittingly and otherwise. It’s fine.
(In which Caleb gets separated from the rest of the group, and then injured, and then some rather ill-advised DIY field medicine involving fire. The rest of the Mighty Nein are left to pick up the pieces when they find him.)
However, I’ve got other whumpy tidbits and headcanons under my general #critrole 2.0 tag (though my blog / that tag frequently contain nsfw or triggering material, as a heads-up).

A/N: no one asked for this, but I can’t stop thinking about it so here goes. Also still taking requests for these guys, if anyone’s interested!
Tumblr media
THE RFA PLAYS DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS FOR THE FIRST TIME
SEVEN
We all know he’s the one that suggested it. Call it a team building exercise, if you will. Besides, since they’re going to be having more parties now in the future, they gotta make sure they stay strong as an organization. What better way than this?
Since no one else is experienced with this game, Seven also takes it upon himself to DM.
Even though oddly enough, he’s never really played it either... at least, not officially.
He found a rulebook when he was younger at the library, and it inspired him, but he knew he couldn’t take it home where his mom might find it.
So instead he memorized it, and when Saeran was sick he would make up a story and roleplay with him. No stats, character sheets, or anything. Just two lonely kids getting enraptured in pure imagination for a little while. It’s one of the fondest memories he has from his childhood.
I’mma be honest: Seven’s DM-ing style is basically the same as Griffin McElroy’s in TAZ.
He keeps things pretty well-balanced. Plenty of humor and shenanigans, but the more serious and emotional moments are really moving, and everyone’s surprised by this.
Zen and Yoosung and even Jaehee and V probably shed some tears over the way the story unfolds.
He also does really good voice acting for his characters. Nowhere near on Zen’s level, like you could still kinda tell it’s him doing the voices if you couldn’t see his face, but he gets into character really easy (even Zen thinks he should audition to voice act for a game or something... ;) )
Yoosung
Aside from the obvious previous experience he might have, he probably played some one-shot campaigns with some D&D clubs on campus before.
The first character he makes is probably a literal recreation of his LOLOL character, since it’s familiar to him, and is a good place to start with since he’s not very experienced. Besides, he’s built like a tank in LOLOL, and if he knows anything about these kinds of games, it’s that balance is key, and they need at least someone who can soak up all the damage of whatever Seven throws at them (is he afraid that he’ll make them face bosses way to big for any of them to handle and they’ll all die in the process? GOD YES)
And it turns out that concern was legit. He dies like 5 minutes in.
Scrapping that strategy, he probably will end up making a half-orc , and he ends up really enjoying this character a lot more.
Plays him... surprisingly chivalrous, probably ends up saving a princess at some point in the game.
Seven lets him romance her and... wait... HE HAS A GIRLFRIEND NOW!!!
The game doesn’t count, my sweet summer child
It’s a little awkward that she’s voiced by Seven, and even though he teases Yoosung about it (both in-game and out), quite often it’s really sweet, actually.
He really, REALLY wishes he could commission someone to do fan art of them, but he has no money T_T
Might ask V if he gets desperate enough... might
Believe it or not, Yoosung will actually ditch playing LOLOL for this.
He likes being able to see all his best friends gathered in one place, laughing and just having a good time. It warms his poor college student heart.
ZEN
He’s not really sure how he was convinced to do this, but somehow he’s very into it
He’s not very good at the numbers part of the game (and he usually has to ask Yoosung or Jaehee to help him with it), but he really shines in the roleplay department (I mean he’s an actor! If nothing else it’s a really good opportunity to work on his improv skills)
Plays an high-elf bard, with a VERY high charisma stat.
“Not very original, huh Zen? Trying to make life imitate art?” “Shut up, mistah trust-fund kid!”
AND HE PLAYS THEM EXACTLY HOW YOU WOULD EXPECT.
Flirts with EVERY ENEMY. To the point that Seven has to make his character have near-death experiences MANY TIMES to get him to stop.
Still, somehow, by the end of the game he has amassed a harem of enemies who worship him for his god-like beauty.
VOICE ACTS FOR HIS CHARACTER AND SINGS ACTUAL BARD SONGS HE’S MEMORIZED BEFORE-HAND (rest in peace, Jaehee)
Oh but he doesn’t stop there.
He COSPLAYS HIS CHARACTER, AND HIS WHOLE FANBASE GOES INSANE
His bard now has a whole fandom and following irl too. He even made a separate social media account where he shares all the amazing fan art that people have drawn for his character. He even thinks that maybe they should start broadcasting their sessions or do a podcast.
JAEHEE
Jaehee is an absolute beast at this game.
She’s read over the rulebook at least 20 times and knows it inside and out.
Probably gets into arguments with Seven and maybe accidentally metagames once or twice.
She should be dm-ing not seven what the hell are they all thinking? She knows the stats better, anyways
She plays a rowdy dwarven paladin, and no one expected it.
Her logic is: it’s a fantasy-world. She can be whatever she wants, and she wants to smash things, be as rowdy as she likes, and be blunt and tell things like it is.
Also she’s semi-intentionally trying to recreate a gimli and legolas style relationship with Zen’s character, go figure ;) it’s actually really sweet at the end of the day though they make a great fucking team.
Has her own special routine for dice-rolls that she believes will increase her odds of getting a better roll.
They all laugh at her for varying degrees for it but FOR SOME REASON IT WORKS AND SHE HAS CRAZY NAT 20 STREAKS SOMETIMES.
She ends up stealing a lot of Jumin’s kills, but she’s just roleplaying, after all. (Seven gives her bonus xp for good roleplaying too like yeah good for her for using this as an outlet)
Frequents D&D forums a lot now. Thinking up new strategies and probably makes like a million new characters based on them that she may never play (but she hopes to, someday)
JUMIN
He’s heard of it before, and that’s no surprise with his extensive interest in small specialty businesses and the fact that the RFA has at least two members who have played it before.
But alas, he has never played it himself.
He agrees because the level of spectacle that he’s seen around playing this game is astounding, and he’s intrigued. Thinks maybe he’ll get a new business idea out of it.
“So Jumin, what race are you going to play as?” Seven asks, innocently, as though he doesn’t know the answer.
“... you’ll see.”
Everyone gets suspicious, but he keeps his poker-face as cool as ever.
When they go around the table introducing their characters, he puts on his most serious face, puts his hands up in front of his face like paws, and introduces himself as his character: Elizabeth the 4th, Tabaxi Ranger
Zen has to leave the room to get over a sneezing fit, Jaehee’s glasses shatter, Seven straight up dies laughing on the floor. None of it matters to Jumin. He’s living the fucking dream.
All that being said, Jumin is definitely tries to take a more methodical approach to the game. He carefully plans out his strategies for the best strategical outcome.
Although
He actually ends up really enjoying it, at the end of the day.
You know he’s looking into premium gear for future sessions. Buys all the rulebooks and lorebooks, buys a bunch of really cool-looking handmade dice (that he personally tests himself for balance, to make sure they all roll true). He probably even commissions someone to make custom mini figurines for their characters.
V
Like Zen, he’s also not quite sure how he got roped into doing this.
He’s never played, or ever really even HEARD of this game before, let alone understand how it works, but given an opportunity to hang out with the rest of the RFA and relax, he takes it. It sounds like fun to him anyway.
He has to spend a lot of time making his character (this poor boy, he sees everyone else with their faces stuffed in the character stat books and he doesn’t wanna ask if he can borrow it ‘cause they need it to make their characters too and doesn’t want to interrupt them)
When he finally DOES make a character, however. He goes with a Tiefling Druid. Not only do they look aesthetically pleasing and unique, but also he empathizes with how they’re treated by society as a whole. It’s kinda the perfect fit.
He’s super clueless when they first start playing.
Seven says “Roll for initiative” and he sits there like “wait... what do I do? ^^; ”
Jaehee, Jumin and Seven usually help him out and explain things as they go along.
As the game progresses he picks things up bit by bit. Turns out, he’s actually really good at roleplaying.
In the beginning, he plays his character as this cold and distant,  not really caring about anyone in the team, but over time that dissolves into unerring loyalty to the rest of the party. Probably created an elaborate backstory involving a long lost love, too.
Everyone gets super attached to V’s character.
But of course, OF COURSE
When they face the final boss of the arc, someone has to sacrifice themselves to defeat it.
V immediately volunteers, and is dealt a killing blow before any of the rest of them can so much as talk it through.
As he dies, he says “My people only know hatred because they have been so hated. But... I’ve never felt that. Not with all of you. Thank you, for showing me that there’s hope for all of us!” and his character dies, with a smile on his face.
DAMNIT V NO
EVERYONE’S FUCKING CRYING NOW LOOK WHAT YOU DID
All-in-all though, he had a really great time. 10/10 would play again. Maybe even starts constructing a story-based campaign in his head and wants to try DM-ing next time!
He’s always snapping super aesthetic photos of the sessions, and probably does a painting of all their characters together to commemorate their first campaign.
SAERAN
Saeyoung invited him to play, but he says no.
It’s childish and he has other things he wants to do.
Saeyoung doesn’t pressure him, and honestly he thought that would be the last he’d hear of it.
However, Seven’s house is usually where they end up meeting to play (since no one else really has the room for it, and playing at Jumin’s house is ruled outright due to level of c-hair)
He’s a little annoyed, and thus stays in his room for most of the night, figuring he can wait the session out in his room.
But alas, the one thing he didn’t factor in was wanting some ice cream at 1 am.
After a deep internal debate, he ultimately decides to leave his room to satisfy the craving, and unlocks his door.
He wanders into the kitchen, surprisingly unnoticed, silently grabbing a spoon from the drawer and taking the carton of ice-cream out of the freezer, when he overhears something... familiar.
“BOOM! BOOM! Drums sound in the deep. A mighty roar soon follows, as the chamber rumbles with the sound, pieces of the construction tumbling to the floor of the ancient hall in its wake...”
Seven roars, for effect.
“Oh shit...” Zen says.
“Louder and louder, the sound draws nearer, until the sound stops at the foot of the barricaded door. Large shadows overcome what little faint light shone from beneath the door...”
*pushes up his glasses* “Roll for initiative”
“WHAT?!”, screams Yoosung, “WE JUST FOUGHT A CAVE TROLL! WE HAVEN’T EVEN HAD THE TIME TO RECOVER!”
“Shame...” Seven says, “If only there was one more party member... then you might have a chance...”
Seven then looks over to the doorway, locking eyes with Saeran briefly.
Memories prickle at the back of his head. Memories of those same eyes lighting up as he told the same stories to him. He remembers getting lost in those stories, feeling happy deep down as he figured out what he would do next. He even remembers... smiling?
He runs back into his room, and slams the door.
And that’s the last the RFA sees of him...
Or so they think.
Half an hour later, he comes out of his room, pulls out one of the kitchen chairs, sits down and slams a hastily-printed character sheet.
“Looks like you’re running into some trouble with that Balrog... tch. Amateurs.”
He made a Kenku Monk, chaotic neutral alignment.
And he completely destroys the boss that Seven had planned for them.
DID SOMEONE SAY EDGELORD?
Probably splits from the party a bunch, but Saeyoung planned for that, so there’s usually a bunch of story-heavy side-quests waiting for him anyway, and they all eventually lead him back to the party somehow.
But truth be told, he’s not that mad about it.
Every opportunity he gets to describe exactly the kind of moves he’s exacting on the enemies they face, he takes. He explains it in creative, gory detail, and it shocks some of the other party members, but Seven seems cool with it.
That’s right kiddo, harness all that repressed rage. Let it out.
He’s helping clean the kitchen after everyone’s gone when Seven asks,
“So? You going to play with us next session too?”
He pauses washing the snack dishes for a beat, and the corners of his lips start to twitch, just a little.
“Y-yeah, I-... I actually had a lot of fun.”
His brother pats him on the back, his hand still on his shoulder when he says “I’m glad! That’s what I was hoping to hear.”
“... Wait... you planned this from the beginning, didn’t you?”
The sly smirk on Seven’s face says it all. Bih you know he did
“... you little shit.”

Firelight Tales of Exandria, Ch.14 - “Wine, Women, and Song”
Thank you for coming, now let’s tell some stories...
“When last we left our heroes, Song had laid bare the circumstances of his past, which from he has spent the better part of a decade running. The rest of the party tried to reassure him that things weren’t as dire as he believes, only to be cornered in their favorite tavern by a squad of Shields interrogating Aeden, the owner of the Sloppy Satyr. The group hatched an escape plan to spirit Nakiya away, believing her to be the target of the investigation as a possible witness to murder, only to discover that it may have been Song the Shields were looking for the whole time.
“Thanks to some quick thinking and spell-slinging on the part of Shadow, the party made it out of the tavern without being detained, but was forced to temporarily split up. Leaf, Cezika, Ladryssa, and Shadow met up with Dren, the local high priest of the Platinum Dragon, to inquire about the apparent strife between he and Aeden. Dren bared the emotional scars of his past, but was comforted by the party and some potent medicinal tea. Meanwhile, Song and Nakiya escaped to the Underwalk Ward, where they patched up the tension from earlier that day. Nakiya bid Song farewell before heading back to the Garrison, leaving the Bard alone once more in the dark, desolate vaults and tunnels beneath Westruun.”
Nakiya returns to the Westruun Garrison barracks on full alert. Expecting to be detained for escaping, she is merely confined to quarters until the current situation with the murder investigation is under control.
With Leaf, Ladryssa, and Dren subdued by the TranquiliTea, Cezika and Shadow attempt to track down Zeal for a heart-to-heart while waiting for their friends to sober up.
Cezika and Shadow wander through the temple domicile for a bit, before being directed to the kitchen by the clergy. They eventually find her at work, absentmindedly lost in her chores for the day.
Cezika asks to talk in private, and Zeal eagerly blows off her duties to go drink in the courtyard garden with her friends, much to the annoyance and disapproval of her fellow Scales.
Zeal and Cezika sit under a tree while Shadow pokes about the garden. Cezika admits to reading Song’s letter to Zeal, which immediately embarrasses the tiefling who immediately hits the bottle of wine Cezika brought as a peace offering.
Cezika and Zeal spend a bit of time bonding over their mutual gripes about authority, fashion, and social expectations. While the other Scales would dismiss it as frivolous “girl talk”, Cezika could easily pick up on Zeal’s subtext; the young tiefling woman’s frustration with the lifestyle of her order, their attempts to stymie her individuality, and her deep-seated resentment towards having to live with her heritage.
Zeal confesses that, in spite of not knowing Song for long, his saying goodbye in such an impersonal manner shook her deeply, hitting upon deep abandonment issues.
Cezika reveals that she was abandoned too: found on a beach about the age of two or three.
Cezika: “The way that I always figured is if our parents were worth a shit they wouldn’t have abandoned us, so we are better off without them. Obviously they were terrible people.
Zeal: “Well, you didn’t need them whoever they were.”
Cezika: “Family is more than blood. Family is an ever-changing garden: sometimes plants die, new ones are grown, ones are brought in from far away, you tend to it, you treasure it, but it changes. It’s what you make of it.”
Zeal: “You know, for a second there, I thought you were going to say something pretentiously pious and attempting to be deep, like Dren does, but then you went with ‘gardening’ and then you kept my interest. So I will give you points for that.”
The girls bond over their shared disdain for bland cooking. Cezika promises to send spices from Marquet.
Cezika admits to baring her soul to the group in private and then bullying Song into sharing his. She says that in spite of the result of the letter, his intentions were honorable.
Cezika: “I don’t think [Song] knows how to be earnest with people that he actually cares about. I think he’s used to being a performer; showing a version of himself that he thinks people will accept without trusting himself that who he is is what we actually want to see. So he puts on this front. He’s trying to be who he thinks he should be-- who we want him to be. He needs to be himself. When he is honest he is quite likable, but it’s hard to lean into that sincerity.”
Zeal: “Y’know, for as much as I don’t want to give that insufferable little twink any credit... THAT I can completely relate with.”
Zeal is completely blindsided by the fact that Cezika thinks she and Song would make “ridiculously attractive babies.”
The hard truth of the life Zeal lives (a child of demonic blood, raised in a militant religious order, often sent off to fight and die against grave threats) meant that she thinks that she could never have a deep, long-term relationship.
Cezika and Shadow explain that Song is afraid the scrutiny of the Margrave’s investigation would reveal a dark secret he has been running from.
Cezika: “He’s worried about something that could be made public: the Margrave releases his identity, people who are after him find out and they come for him, and it’s a whole bunch of murder.”
Zeal: “Oh gods, I was right; he is a creeper.”
Shadow: “He is noble.”
Zeal: “He’s a noble?!”
Shadow: “What he did was a noble thing.”
Zeal: “Oh!”
Shadow unintentionally guilts Zeal into fully admitting her feelings for Song and how much that vulnerability and loss of control frightens her.
Shadow: “You are scared that you cannot control his actions?”
Zeal: “Pretty sure he’d let me control his actions if I wanted to, but...”
Cezika: “I mean, that is an entirely different conversation.”
Shadow: “I am confused.”
Zeal: “You’ll find out when you’re older.”
Shadow: “What does that mean?”
Zeal: “I don’t know, it’s just something Dren says.”
Shadow and Cezika explain that even though Song is in hiding he still refuses to leave the city. After recalling the confrontation with the Shields at the Satyr, Zeal becomes suddenly concerned. She explains that when the Shields start pulling at threads, their facade has to be iron-clad.
According to Zeal, whatever Song is running from may not be something the Shields could arrest him for unless they are absolutely sure he is guilty, but lying to the inquisitors investigating the party is absolutely a crime. As hard as it may be, she suggests they talk to Song and get him to come in to clear everything up.
Cezika offers to show Zeal Dren high on TranquiliTea, which Zeal jumps at and berates Cezika for not telling her sooner and delaying her with “personal bullshit.”
Cezika: “Sometimes it is worth going through the emotional bullshit. It hurts, but all wounds heal.”
Zeal: “...You have very pretty eyes.”
Cezika: “I know, everyone keeps telling me this.”
Cezika, Shadow, and Zeal come back to the rectory to find Dren and Leaf exploring the mystery of bees and Ladryssa is trying to talk to her pseudodragon in pidgin Draconic. Cezika, attempting to be the responsible one, tries to rouse the group to face their challenges and put their plan into action.
Cezika: “Aile, we need to get back.”
Leaf: “Noooooooo...”
Zeal promises to look after Dren (pocketing the TranquiliTea) and the group makes their way back to the Garrison.
On the way, the party notices several patrols-in-force about the city streets, as though Westruun is now on high alter, but are not stopped by any of them.
Upon reaching the barracks, the rest of the party is confined to quarters, meeting up again with Nakiya. The party tries to figure out how to salvage this situation and whether trying to convince Song to come clean is the best course of action. The group remains confined to quarters through the night and into the next day.
Shadow and Nakiya are summoned to speak before the inquiry board, under close guard. The group trying making the best of their confinement. Leaf requests time outside, and they are escorted around the parade grounds for ten hours.
After Shadow and Nakiya are escorted back, the group is delivered their meal by a Shield in a special uniform, who sits with the group and cheerily introduces himself as Warrant Officer Regnault du Gaultier, the special investigator assigned to the group.

This week’s ask meme Monday theme is “I make my friends do math” SO start at the top and answer prime numbers until you 1) run out of characters 2) run out of prime numbers or 3) lose interest. STEM boy
:(
but i’m still doing it. randomly rolling starting with pcs, then npcs, then stopping
1. What’s one experience your character had that made them very afraid? Isaac: so i don’t know how much i’ve said on here about what isaac’s experience in hell actually Was Like. and i think I’ve used the word “puppet” before, and I think that was what it was like. she doesn’t remember a whole lot about it, because for the most part, she just wasn’t there. if she really tried, i think she could remember specific things, but she doesn’t Like To. it’s remembering when you had no choice or control, when your body wasn’t your own and you had to smile and laugh for things with too many hands and tails and teeth. a devil full ass remade her as a tiefling, grew her horns slowly but surely through the skin of her cheeks, up and through and out her eye sockets. like. shits fucked. now that she has her brain back, shes Very afraid of the thing that did that to her.
2. What is your character’s happiest memory? Nyxi: her patron probably had a kid while she was working with her and oh my god...... thinking about her and that tiny small little baby while her patron recovered....... knowing that no she wasn’t the one to give birth to them but they’re going to be, like their siblings have been, just a much a child of hers as theyve all been. she loved all her kids, of course, but there was something special about holding that baby in the first few hours of their life, watching them grow up and helping them with that growth. she’d probably rank those first few hours among the happiest of her life, for sure.
3. What’s one skill your character really wishes they had? Sarril: hmmmm. the ability to heal, maybe? I think that’s the kind of skill he would like. there’s just something nice about like. even if you get too angry and go too far there’s still a way for you to make it right, you know?
skipping 5 bc I don’t care for it overmuch
7. Have they ever encountered someone they really wanted to kill? Zephyr: no. like does she dislike a lot of people? sure! but she’s been mostly a stay-in-the-ivory-tower kind of person, and as such hasn’t really made any enemies. rivals, sure, yeah, and I doubt she made many friends before she entered into the academy. but she doesn’t want to kill anyone. (yet.)
11. What was something they struggled with greatly and how did they overcome it? Legacy: hmmmmm. I think legacy struggled a lot with like.... Mattering, if that makes sense? I think she got her Powers rather early in life because her grandmother looked at her immediately post her spouse dying and went “yeah she’s old enough” and came by like “yo adore whats up. want some cool Spells (eventually) and also to be my grandchild” and legacy, then adore, then 9 years old, said “boy WOULD I!!!!!” and then she spent the next eight or nine years really struggling with what to do with them? she’s got spells at this point and all she’s done is work in a print shop. at some point she turned to petty crime because she was good at lying her ass off, and then eventually she got a sword and went to Adventure because she straight up didn’t know what else she wanted to do. it’s only now that she’s kind of figuring out that like. yeah she does kinda like adventuring? even more when there’s people around her.
13. Does your character have anyone that they really care about, to the point that they would give their life for them? If so, who are they and what is your character’s relation to them? If not, do they wish they did? Is there anyone they wish they could build such a relationship with? Zier: so like......... yes and no? zier sucks. zier sucks big time. and I think the closest thing he has at least at the points i’ve played him, are MAYBE one of his little siblings. like yes he’s meant to be making them paranoid and selfish. but also maybe he has a little sister who’s just always been a bit too soft for his family. and maybe he remembers that he’s the only boy in his family because his oldest sister killed the other one. so maybe he’s a little protective but very good at pretending like he isn’t. maybe his littlest sister knows better than to trust him even if she’s soft, so he’ll never have much more of a relationship with her than that. and maybe he wishes that it was different. and maybe he knows better.
17. How was their childhood? Did their parents treat them fairly? Did they have any really good friends? Kenny: kenny had a very nice set of parents and I think I said in game that he had a little brother but I also think he might’ve been an only child? idk. but this ask doesn’t ask that!!! his parents were very fair. maybe a little lax but only because kenny was a pretty Good Kid. and I do think he kind of sees them through rose colored glasses now that theyre gone but they were pretty good. his tragic backstory focuses on Losing them. in addition, I think he did have some really good friends! he’s a charming boy and pretty friendly, and it was a decently small village. I think he found some other folk his own age and they played together when they were young and that translated into proper friendship as they got older.
19. Have they ever lost a loved one? What happened to them, and are they the same as they were before they lost them? Ecstasy: okay so. I made it semi canon that when she got the reapers hand, it may or may not have made her shoot her best friend point blank to devour her soul when it got hungry. I am canonizing this. this did happen, and it was the reason ecstasy started taking rogue levels instead of fighter levels. she like. got back to using guns? but she handed over her hugely cursed but also HUGELY powerful gun to her fuckbuddy’s friend without much of a fight, I’ll tell you that much.
23. Does your character know any languages apart from their native language? What one would they like to learn? Glade: lemme look at his character sheet. okay he only knows common and orcish. he uses common a lot more than he uses orcish, but orcish was his first language and now that he has red he uses it a lot more, trying to have her pick it up as a language too. and this is a predictable answer but still true: if he had much time to learn a language, he’d learn infernal. he knows a few words because he’s married to a tiefling, but he doesn’t have the bloodline-given understanding of the language like they do and he would Like To Know What His Wife And Two Year Old Are Giggling About, Please.
29. If they could change just one thing about themselves, what would it be? Endurance: so. like. I don’t know if endurance would change anything about herself??? actually no she would. she would love it if she were more decisive. like, relentless decided to fall and decided to claw her way back to amaunator’s side, and endurance like. isn’t like that at all. I think a lot of her regrets are still tied up in “should I have turned lent into the crownsguard” and because of the violence that happened, she shouldn’t have. but like. she REALLY hates how unsure she is about the circumstances surrounding it, you know? she didn’t heal her, she didn’t really try and stop it until it was too late, and she hasn’t accepted that she was passive in those circumstances. at least if she were more decisive, she thinks she would have already made peace with the things she did pre and post lent’s fall.
31. How patient is your character with others? Do they find it easy to handle people that try and bug them, or hard? Iris: very patient. she’s a princess and also deals with motherfuckers unlimited Literally Constantly. she’s SO patient. however. she also takes no shit. if someone is trying to bug her, then she will not attempt to deal with it. her ability to have Diplomacy means that she can rather easily and relatively politely just go “you are not having this conversation with me in a respectful manner. if you can stop deliberately prodding me for a reaction, we can continue with what we are discussing. if you cannot or refuse to respect me and my time here with you, then I am stopping the conversation here. which option would you like?”
skipping 37 as well
41. Where do they live? What is that place like, do they enjoy living there? Kiya: kiya likes highgrasp! she probably likes it more than any other place she’s lived. it’s a nice city, it’s a clean city, she likes the ocean, and she likes the job she got there. not much to complain about!
43. What are they like when they’re drunk? Don’t be a prude and tell me they’ve never been smashed before. Coriander: zephyr and coriander are the Same when drunk. Loud and Intelligent. coriander also may be a Horny drunk but that may be because she just likes talking about her spouse and thinks (rightly so) that they are Sexy. she will get on her construct to be eight feet taller than most opponents and she will Debate them about magical theory whether they want to be a part of the conversation or not. Fucka You.
