Note
what are all the podcasts you listen to?
anon I'm so glad you asked
Since it is a pretty long list including synopses (stolen from the podcast feed or website because I'm Bad at summaries and in some cases it's been a while since I listened) I'm going to put it under a cut.
I've separated the list into "Complete" (either finished or cancelled) and "Ongoing" podcasts. Some have additional comments by me. Current favorites are marked orange. My eternal beloved are Our Fair City and Wolf 359.
Complete
ars PARADOXICA: "When an experiment in a time much like our own goes horribly awry, Dr. Sally Grissom finds herself stranded in the past and entrenched in the activities of a clandestine branch of the US government. Grissom and her team quickly learn that there's no safety net when toying with the fundamental logic of the universe."
Blackwood: "Five years ago, Molly Weaver, Bryan Anderson, and Nathan Howell started a podcast focused on the local legend of a monster called The Blackwood Bugman. Quickly, the investigation grew out of their control, as they discovered that, not only are the legends seemingly true, many people in Blackwood have turned up dead or disappeared without a trace." --> [this feels like the Blair With Project, but as a podcast. Didn't get a second season due to no funding, but it works as a standalone]
Dreamboy: "Dane, a spun-out musician spending the winter in Cleveland, Ohio, has two main goals: keeping his job at the Pepper Heights Zoo and trying not to waste all his time on Grindr. What he doesn’t expect is to get swept into a story about dreams, about forevers, about flickering lights, about unexplained deaths, about relentless change, and about the parts of ourselves that we wish other people knew to look for. Oh, and also a murderous zebra." --> [very NSFW; does cool things with music! Didn't get a second season due to no funding, but it works as a standalone]
King Fall AM: "...centers on a lonely little mountain town's late-night AM talk radio show and its paranormal, peculiar happenings and inhabitants." --> [cancelled after 100 episodes, ends on a huge cliffhanger]
Our Fair City: "A campy, post-apocalyptic audio drama." --> [I know the description sounds like nothing but just trust me, I love it so much]
Steal the Stars: "...is a gripping noir science fiction thriller in 14 episodes: Forbidden love, a crashed UFO, an alien body, and an impossible heist unlike any ever attempted."
Stellar Firma: "...a weekly Science Fiction, Comedy podcast following the misadventures of Stellar Firma Ltd.'s highest born but lowest achieving planetary designer Trexel Geistman and his bewildered clone assistant David 7. Join them each episode as they attempt to take listener submissions and craft them into the galaxy's most luxurious, most expensive and most questionably designed bespoke planets. However, with Trexel's corporate shark of a line manager Hartro Piltz breathing down their necks and I.M.O.G.E.N., the station's omnipresent and omniinvasive stationwide A.I. monitoring those necks to within 3 decimal places, they'll be lucky to make it a week before being slurried and recycled into raw human resources." --> [semi-improvised, I thought I'd have a problem with the improv bit because that's not usually my thing, but no, I absolutely devoured this]
TANIS: "...is a serialized docudrama about a fascinating and surprising mystery: the myth of Tanis. Tanis is an exploration of the nature of truth, conspiracy, and information. Tanis is what happens when the lines of science and fiction start to blur." [+ spinoff The Last Movie] --> [I have no clue what the hell is going on here]
The Black Tapes: "...is a serialized docudrama about one journalist's searc for truth, her enigmatic subject's mysterious past, and the literal and figurative ghosts that haunt them both."
The Magnus Archives: "...is a weekly horror fiction anthology podcast examining what lurks in the archives of the Magnus Institute, an organisation dedicated to researching the esoteric and the weird. Join new head archivist Jonathan Sims as he attempts to bring a seemingly neglected collection of supernatural statements up to date, converting them to audio and supplementing them with follow-up work from his small but dedicated team. Individually, they are unsettling. Together they begin to form a picture that is truly horrifying because as they look into the depths of the archives, something starts to look back…"
Time:Bombs: "...a new audio drama podcast about the hilarious world of bomb disposal. Ride along with EOD technician Simon Teller on the busiest night of the year for him and his team - when business is, quite literally, booming."
Wolf 359: "Life's not easy for Doug Eiffel, the communications officer for the U.S.S. Hephaestus Research Station, currently on Day 448 of its orbit around red dwarf star Wolf 359. He's stuck on a scientific survey mission of indeterminate length, 7.8 light years from Earth. His only company on board the station are stern mission chief Minkowski, insane science officer Hilbert, and Hephaestus Station's sentient, often malfunctioning operating system Hera. He doesn't have much to do for his job other than monitoring static and intercepting the occasional decades-old radio broadcast from Earth, so he spends most of his time creating extensive audio logs about the ordinary, day-to-day happenings within the station. But the Hephaestus is an odd place, and life in extremely isolated, zero gravity conditions has a way of doing funny things to people's minds. Even the simplest of tasks can turn into a gargantuan struggle, and the most ordinary-seeming things have a way of turning into anything but that." --> [starts funny, turns very intense]
Ongoing
Alba Salix, Roya Physician (+ The Axe & Crown): "A witch, her apprentice, and her fairy herbalist treat the ills of a fairy-tale kingdom." + "Gubbin the troll tavernkeeper deals with his clueless new landlord, his shady niece, and some new competition."
Archive 81: "A found footage horror podcast about ritual, stories, and sound."
Arden: "A (fictional) true crime podcast about cold cases and the reporter and detective who try to solve them."
Brimstone Valley Mall: "The year is 1999. Lurking somewhere between Hot Topic and the food court, five misfit demons from Hell kill time inciting sin in a suburban shopping mall. When the lead singer of their band goes mysteriously missing, the demons only have two weeks to find him before they play the biggest gig of the millennium - or face the wrath of Satan herself."
CARAVAN: "First rule of Wound Canyon: No one who gets in, ever gets out. So when a brilliant, ghostly specter flies through the sky amid the rain and lightning, Samir stumbles off a steep cliff and into a hidden world, one in which demons, vampires, and all other manner of paranormal creatures take sanctuary." --> [also pretty NSFW and horny in general]
Death by Dying: "The Obituary Writer of Crestfall, Idaho finds himself deeply in over his head as he investigates a series of strange and mysterious deaths… when he is supposed to simply be writing obituaries. Along the way he encounters murderous farmers, man-eating cats, haunted bicycles, and a healthy dose of ominous shadows." --> [I had to stop listening to this in public because it kept making me undignified laugh and snort noises]
Desperado: "Blood magic, Voodoo magic, old gods, new gods: We've got it all! Follow the story of misfits from all over the world, as they try to survive and protect their heritage from modern-day crusaders."
EOS 10: "Doctors in space, a deposed alien prince, a super gay space pirate and a fiery nurse who'll help you win your bar fight."
Girl In Space: "Abandoned on a dying ship in the farthest reaches of known space, a young scientist fights for survival (and patience with the on-board A.I.). Who is she? No one knows. But a lot of dangerous entities really want to find out. Listen as the story unfolds for science, guns, trust, anti-matter, truth, beauty, inner turmoil, and delicious cheeses. It’s all here. In space."
Janus Descending: "...follows the arrival of two xenoarcheologists on a small world orbiting a binary star. But what starts off as an expedition to survey the planet and the remains of a lost alien civilization, turns into a monstrous game of cat and mouse, as the two scientists are left to face the creatures that killed the planet in the first place. Told from two alternating perspectives, Janus Descending is an experience of crossing timelines, as one character describes the nightmare from end to beginning, and the other, from beginning to the end." --> [absolutely harrowing horror]
Love and Luck: "...is a fictional radio play podcast, told via voicemails and set in present day Melbourne, Australia. A slice of life queer romance story with a touch of magic, it follows the relationship between two men, Jason and Kane, as their love grows both for each other and their community." --> [soft and gay, feels like a warm hug]
Potterless: "Join Mike Schubert, a grown man reading the Harry Potter series for the first time, as he sits down with HP fanatics to poke fun at plot holes, make painfully incorrect predictions, and bask in the sassiness of the characters." --> [the only non-fiction podcast on the list]
Primordial Deep: "When a long extinct sea creature washes up on the shores of Coney Island, marine biologist Dr. Marella Morgan is contacted by a secret organization to investigate the origins of the creature’s sudden and unnatural resurgence. Soon, she and a team of experts find themselves living on the research station The Tiamat, traveling along the abyssal plains as they search for answers far below the waves. But there are dangers in these ancient waters. Reawakened, prehistoric monsters are rising from the deep -- jaws wide and waiting, and in the darkness, something is stirring."
Red Valley: "No one at Overhead Industries wants to talk about defunct research station Red Valley, and account man Warren Godby is out of his depth. When he meets Gordon Porlock, a disgruntled archivist with a bag of tapes from the station’s last known occupant, they will begin a journey to the limits of experimental science, confront horror and trauma from the past, present and future, and try to remember the cheat codes from Sonic the Hedgehog 2."
Rusty Quill Gaming: "An actual play podcast following a mixed ability group of comedians, improvisers, gamers, and writers as they play through the extended, tabletop roleplaying campaign Erasing the Line, an original game world of the GM’s crafting." --> [took me a while to get into because I have trouble focusing on non-scripted things, but eventually I got really hooked on the plot and attached to the characters. This podcast is really fucked up at times if you think about it]
SAYER: "A narrative fiction podcast set on Earth’s man-made second moon, Typhon. The eponymous SAYER is a highly advanced, self-aware AI created to help acclimate new residents to their new lives, and their new employment with Ærolith Dynamics." --> [feels like Welcome to Night Vale but narrated by GLaDOS from Portal]
StarTripper!!: "Join Feston Pyxis on a road-trip through the cosmos, as he leaves behind his old life in search of the best and wildest experiences the galaxy has to offer!"
The Amelia Project: "...is a secret agency that fakes its clients' deaths, then lets them reappear with a brand new identity! A black comedy full of secrets, twists... and cocoa."
The Big Loop: "...a biweekly anthology series. Each episode is a self-contained narrative exploring the strange, the wonderful, the terrifying, and the heartbreaking. Stories of finite beings in an infinite universe." --> [I don't like anthologies, except this one]
The Bright Sessions: "Dr. Bright provides therapy for the strange and unusual; their sessions have been recorded for research purposes." --> [think X-Men, but with therapy instead of a school]
The Deca Tapes: "Recordings have surfaced of ten people that are locked into the same space together. We don’t know where they are, or if they'll get out. But the answers must be somewhere on these tapes."
The Silt Verses: "Carpenter and Faulkner, two worshippers of an outlawed god, travel up the length of their deity’s great black river, searching for holy revelations. As their pilgrimage lengthens and the river’s mysteries deepen, the two acolytes find themselves under threat from a police manhunt, but also come into conflict with the weirder gods that have flourished in these forgotten rural territories."
The White Vault: "Follow the collected records of a repair team sent to Outpost Fristed in the vast white wastes of Svalbard and unravel what lies waiting in the ice below."
Tides: "...is the story of Dr. Winifred Eurus, a xenobiologist trapped on an unfamiliar planet with hostile tidal forces. She must use her wits, sarcasm and intellectual curiosity to survive long enough to be rescued. But there might be more to life on this planet than she expected." --> [think The Martian, but on a water planet]
Unwell, a Midwestern Gothic Mystery: "Lillian Harper moves to the small town of Mt. Absalom, Ohio, to care for her estranged mother Dorothy after an injury. Living in the town's boarding house which has been run by her family for generations, she discovers conspiracies, ghosts, and a new family in the house's strange assortment of residents."
VAST Horizon: "Nolira is an agronomist tasked with establishing agriculture in a new solar system, but when she wakes up on a now- empty colony ship, the whole of her plan disappears. The ship has been set adrift, with numerous mission-critical problems requiring immediate attendance outside of her area of expertise. Nolira is aided by the ship’s malfunctioning AI, which acts as her confidant and companion during the fight for survival."
Victoriocity: "Even Greater London, 1887. In this vast metropolis, Inspector Archibald Fleet and journalist Clara Entwhistle investigate a murder, only to find themselves at the centre of a conspiracy of impossible proportions."
We Fix Space Junk: "...follows seasoned smuggler Kilner and reluctant fugitive Samantha as they travel the galaxy, dodging bullets and meeting strange and wonderful beings as they carry out odd jobs on the fringes of the law."
Welcome to Night Vale: "Twice-monthly community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale, where every conspiracy theory is true. Turn on your radio and hide."
Within the Wires: "Stories told through found audio from an alternate universe."
Wooden Overcoats: "Rudyard Funn and his equally miserable sister Antigone run their family's failing funeral parlour, where they get the body in the coffin in the ground on time. But one day they find everyone enjoying themselves at the funerals of a new competitor - the impossibly perfect Eric Chapman! With their dogsbody Georgie, and a mouse called Madeleine, the Funns are taking drastic steps to stay in the business…" --> [one of THE funniest podcasts I have ever listened to]

Robert Mapplethorpe: Master of Black & White (Jan Alex)
Tumblr media
For this research project, I wanted to look at a photographer who I often forget ever took photographs. Though he is best known for his stunning and downright masterful black and white photographs, Robert Mapplethorpe(1946-1989) has always existed in my mind as a multi-disciplinary artist. With that in mind, compiling this research was a process of rediscovering Robert Mapplethorpe as a photographer, arguably the artist’s best medium.
Born on Long Island, Robert Mapplethorpe began his career as an artist in New York City in the mid 1960’s. In his early years as an artist he lived with his girlfriend Patti Smith, the famous singer-songwriter, and this period of his life is intimately captured in Smith’s award-winning book Just Kids. During this period he worked on collages and multimedia studio art, but in the late 60’s/early 70’s he was given a polaroid and began taking black and white polaroid photographs to incorporate into his collages. Soon after he was given a medium-format hasselblad film camera and was quickly taken by the medium and shifted his focus to photography in its own right, with few of his early collages actually containing any polaroids. Over Mapplethorpe’s nearly three decade long career he focused almost entirely on black and white studio photographs and is regarded as master of the form. His work covered a wide array of subjects including celebrity-portraits, self-portraits, male and female nudes, and even commercial projects. His most controversial work’s were undoubtedly his photographs focusing on New York City’s underground S & M scene. Though he himself  has described some of his more shocking photographs focusing on the S & M scene as “pornagraphic”, critics have contended that his work on the subject, which was praised for its technical and formal mastery, presented the public with representations of the lgbtq+ community that can be considered high art. He aimed for a shock value with his work, and to explore tensions that exist between the male and female, between conformity and expression and ultimately most would contend that the obscenity in his work is never really obscene. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with AIDs in 1986, and four years later in 1989 he died of the disease, only one year after the Whitney Museum of Art mounted his first major american museum retrospective.
For this research, I have decided to focus on the progression of Mapplethorpe’s photography over the span of his career by looking at key photographs from different points in his life. Because Mapplethorpe’s subject matter varied so widely, I will try to address that variety.  Early in his career as a photographer he took many polaroid photographs and focused on the intimate, his friends, himself, and his lovers and friends. Take for example this untitled polaroid from 1972, a portrait of a man in which a great deal of motion is captured. It is far cry from the composed, formal compositions he would later become famous for, and it suggests that at this point in his career he had yet to fully decide which direction to take his photography, but his interest in portraits and the intimate is apparent. We can see how this shift in his approach began to occur when we look at this portrait of his partner Sam Wagstaff in 1979. In this photograph, a non-polaroid film shot, we can see a heightened attention to formal composition and also to capturing the distinct contrasts between black and white.
In the 1980’s, his career was flourishing and he expanded his work to include highly formalized male and female nudes, studio portraits of artists and celebrities, and even still lifes. His male and female black & white nudes, in particular, have been praised by art historians and critics for embracing classical aesthetics and in many cases evoking the style of classical and renaissance sculpture. Take for example this photograph, one shot from a body of work he collaborated on with the model/bodybuilder Derrick Cross, this photo and others Mapplethorpe took of Cross are certainly reminiscent of the poses struck in ancient sculpture. In another example of his highly regarded studio nudes, there is this photograph from his work with the female bodybuilder Lisa Lyons. In this photograph see again the compositions nod to classical sculpture, but the mere choice of a female bodybuilder was a bold one and challenges our conceptions of beauty by confronting us with an image that simultaneously possesses “masculine” strength and “feminine” beauty. Another stellar example of his studio nudes/portraits which I found particularly striking is this portrait of two of Mapplethorpe’s friends Ken Moody and Robert Sherman. This photograph really demonstrates Mapplethorpe's deep consideration of the black and white format and his ability to create provocative, highly distinct images.
Despite expanding the scope of his work substantially by the end of his career, Mapplethorpe consistently came back to the self-portrait, and it's in his self-portraits that we see his most intimate moments of self-expression. Mapplethorpe was obviously an artist and individual who strived for self-expression and his self-portraits are excellent examples of that. Take for example this diptych from 1980, in the one photograph we see Mapplethorpe in subtle drag, a nod to his explorative, non-binary sexual identity, and in the other he is dressed as a greaser, speaking to his conservative upbringing and his tendency to simultaneously embrace and fight traditional conceptions of masculinity. Without a doubt however, my favorite Robert Mapplethorpe photograph is his final self-portrait, taken a little under a year before his death. In this self-portrait, Mapplethorpe demonstrates not just his formal and technical mastery, but also a level of transcendence. His body, dressed in black, melds into the stark black background, leaving his head floating in space as his hand firmly grasps a skull-topped cane. This image to me suggests his own awareness of the legacy he left behind and also an acceptance of inevitable death. His floating head suggests that even with the loss of his physical body, his image, ideas, and art will continue to exist, and his hand grasping the cane shows his firm hold on the reality of death.

Earth Ascending: the Noosphere and Communication with Cosmic Civilization. - by Jose Arguelles/Valum Votan
The effort of cosmic civilization to establish communication with intelligent life throughout the universe is vast, heroic and, to most humans of this little planet, virtually incomprehensible.
For the possibility of such communication, there must exist in the planetary field of intelligence not yet incorporated into cosmic civilization, a receptive capacity of consciousness in need of being informed by a higher perceptual order of reality. When that receptive need is ripened by an evolutionary crisis into a perception of the whole system nature of reality, then the cosmic civilization can respond.
This simple process describes how the book known as Earth Ascending, An illustrated treatise on the Law Governing Whole Systems came about.
Prompted by a deep perception of the state of total planetary crisis, and the consequent need for a wholly transcendent yet whole systems vision of reality, the well-attuned Earth intelligence was focused to receive a genuine communication from cosmic civilization.
The response of cosmic civilization was the transmission of a completely new perception of the holographic nature of planetary reality in relation to a system of higher mental mechanics that proceeds from a purely unitive and holonomic grasp of the universal order, or cosmos.
In other words, Earth Ascending is a communication of cosmic civilization through a solitary medium attuned to this planetary responsibility.
Tumblr media
The communication displays in visual and binary mathematical format the nature of the next stage of evolutionary consciousness of the planet, the noosphere, and includes a holonomic analysis of the present stage of  Earth civilization as the hominization of the planet, and the consequent radiation of man.
The fundamental operating mechanism of the noosphere is revealed immediately as the psi bank.
A systematic function of the fourth-dimensional timing grid (or Tzolkin as it was known by the galactic Maya), the psi bank was the capacitor allowing the template of cosmic communication to be revealed to the agent in resonance with the process. The consequent result – Earth Ascending – is the first complete statement of cosmic science, an evolutionary science, hitherto unknown on this planet.
A brief consideration of all present day science will indicate that, no matter how insightful it may be, it is limited by conditioned egotistical thinking and a perception of reality that is scarcely more than heliocentric. But in an order of reality as vast as our cosmos, not even a heliocentric perception can pass as being anything more than a galactically provincial point of view.
In 1962, the great Russian astrophysicist, I. S. Shklovskii, wrote a book entitled Universe,Life and Mind, dealing with considerations of the existence of intelligence in the cosmos.
Later through the collaboration of American astrophysicist, Carl Sagan, this book was published in the West as Intelligent Life in the Universe (1966, 1977). As brilliantly systematic an analysis of the cosmos and its constituent elements as this book may be, it is a perception of reality that is totally conditioned by a physicalist or materialist point of view.
The idea of mind or spiritual reality as a non-physicalist possibility for higher civilization is not even entertained . Here we come to a fundamental limitation in the paradigm of the present scientific outlook.
To Shklovskii and Sagan, higher civilization must always be technological in nature. But what if evolution proceeds by mental -spiritual plateaus once the ultimate crisis of materialism has been generated and overcome by the Earth civilization?
Russian scientist, V.I. Vernadsky, along with French paleontologist, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, had already evolved the theory of the noosphere (1926).
Vernadsky himself wrote of the coming geological era as the psychozoic. As the ‘mental sphere” of the Earth superseding the biospheric crisis, the noosphere, is a purely mental structure and perception of reality.
Being planetary in scale, it represents a shift of consciousness of a magnitude we can scarcely imagine. Such a field of consciousness as the noosphere represents can only be described as cosmic in nature. Being cosmic, the structure and nature of the noosphere must correspond to a view and a science that is already cosmic.
Indeed, Earth Ascending reveals that our planet is not merely a member of a solar field of intelligence but of a galactic field of intelligence as well.
Tumblr media
From the point of view of cosmic civilization, the sub orders of reality are the galactic, the stellar and the planetary.
What we call the planet is the final condensation of the densest gases and heavy metals ejected by the stellar masses. The stars themselves are functions of great electromagnetic tubes which we know as the spiral arms of the galaxy.
A real advance of scientific intelligence would be from the heliocentric to the galactocentric. This perspective could only be provided by a cosmic science transmitted telepathically by means of the noosphere’s planetary psi bank grid to a receptive agent attuned to and ready for such a possibility.
While there may exist intelligent arrays of radio signals pulsed from distant systems of intelligence, the presence of the noosphere and its psi bank grid indicate that the most effective communication of the cosmic civilization is through the medium of what we normally refer to as telepathy.
Such telepathic communication depends upon psi factors, that is factors relating to, concerned with, or actually being parapsychological psychic events or powers – hence psi bank, capacitor of psi phenomena.
Though the present science either denies or marginalizes such phenomena, they represent the significant leap in consciousness augured by the advent of the noosphere and its operating mechanism, the psi bank.
Tumblr media
Being the evolutionary advance of universal life, cosmic civilization operates by psi factors of every kind, while the telepathic means of communication is the most effective for establishing contact with lesser evolved intelligences, i.e., intelligences not yet evolved to the noospheric stage.
With Earth Ascending we now have a system to study that is a direct consequence of such communication and which is intended to assist us in overcoming the crisis in which are now deeply, almost irrevocably immersed.
“Essentially the future lies in the radiation of man. This refers first of all to the process by which each individual assumes responsibility for all of his or her actions, and with heightened awareness participates in increasingly integrated group efforts to establish a consciously-oriented relationship between biopsychic energy factors and those of the environment. In the most general way this describes the new symbiotic technology, radiosonics, the basis of post-historic synaesthesia.”(p.113)
Tumblr media
In considering the noospheric integration of the human into the biospheric order, one other evolutionary factor must be brought into consideration: plasmas and cosmic rays. These cosmic energies have greatly increased in the last (25) years. They are assisting the mutational process of the biosphere and the evolutionary processes of our sun – which is a star.
It is a matter of greatest importance to contemplate that these energies can be coordinated by the cosmic civilization. In the most advanced stages of this civilization are categories of beings who function as “cosmic engineers.”
With this thought in mind it is well to consider that all of what is presently occurring on our planet and solar system may well be aspects of a cosmic engineering project.
Earth Ascending could then be viewed as a manual presented for our use to become co-creators in this project. It is our human introduction into the science and practice of radiosonics.
“The purpose of radiosonics is to release the radiant chromatic structures contained within the dynamics of life and electromagnetism through biopsychic activation.” p.128
This is the principle behind the manifestation of the Circumpolar Rainbow Bridge, the first act of the new symbiotic technology of radiosonics.

Kepler 16b
Tumblr media
This discovery confirms that Kepler-16b is an inhospitable, cold world about the size of Saturn and thought to be made up of about half rock and half gas. The parent stars are smaller than our sun. One is 69 percent the mass of the sun and the other only 20 percent. Kepler-16b orbits around both stars every 229 days, similar to Venus’ 225-day.
Unique Kepler 16b Posters designed and sold by artists. Shop affordable wall art to hang in dorms, bedrooms, offices, or anywhere blank walls aren't welcome.
Kepler-16b orbits the binary stars, a K-type Kepler-16A and an M-type Kepler-16B in the constellation Cygnus. Kepler-16b is the first object discovered orbiting a binary star. This means that two “suns” are visible from the surface of the planet. Its orbit is located at the outer edge of the habitable zone of the brighter star, Kepler-16A.
Kepler-16b is a gas giant that orbits the two stars in the Kepler-16 system. The planet is a third of Jupiter's mass and slightly smaller than Saturn at 0.7538 Jupiter radii, but is more dense. Kepler-16b completes a nearly circular orbit every 228.776 days.
Kepler-16b has a radius of 8.5 times that of Earth and a mass of 105 times that of Earth. It is close to the size Saturn from our solar system, and is considered a gas giant. If it has a sufficient atmosphere, there is a possibility for life to occur.
(Credit: Shione Fujita & SGH Moriyama High School)
From this imaginary satellite, if you look into the sky, you will see Kepler-16b (the Saturn-like planet with rings) and two suns (Kepler-16(AB)) shining in the distance. It is interesting to think that life could be occurring on a “habitable moon,” which is unknown in our solar system, The landscape would be completely different than on Earth.
Kepler 16b Planet
When Kepler-16b was first introduced at a research conference in the United States, the audience gave it a standing ovation. People thought that Luke Skywalker’s hometown of Tatooine, from the movie “Star Wars,” had finally been discovered! It was such a wonderful moment where science fiction caught up with reality.
Circumpolar planets have been discovered since then, and various studies are now being actively investigated, including the possibility of different ways of forming planets from single stars, and calculating more complex habitable zones. Since there are more binary stars in the universe than single stars, it is important to understand these binary planets.

Souvenirs From Hell
Souvenirs From Hell, by H.R Martin, (AKA YokoKoko on Tumblr, though this is the best edit.) I worked all day on this and forgot to eat. ----------------------------------------- Maya Angelou once commented that, "There's no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you." A certain person who will be mentioned later gave the opposite advice. Don't tell stories. Stories make one accountable. . Anyway, this story is unapologetic and it is all mine. What I learned recently has to do with the difference between life as a messed up 24 or 25 year old and one as a messed up 29 year old, aka me. It starts with knowing what you want and planning how to get it. Knowing that your fuck-ups are your responsibility. Knowing you're a mentally ill bitch who says harsh things, making the granary of truth in your words harder to hear. It's frustrating that you were attempting to communicate but somehow you got it all wrong. It's wanting desperately to be more thoughtful, helpful, intelligent, necessary and kind with your words. It's striving for the best in every action I choose to take. I want to be a decent human being. Due to my flaws, it's a struggle. Knowing isn't the issue. Doing right is the challenge. As for the five years growth between 24 and 29 I never believed it was that big of a difference until I lived it. That gap, in my experience is filled with codependency and attempts to train or fix someone. This is how we drive ourselves crazy. It's their journey. Not letting others walk their own journey or not being left alone to walk it is 90% of our therapists' jobs. We should work on ourselves. Because many, if not most partners that we try to prod and improve, and love into what we need them to be are stubborn idiots, and frankly so are we, for attempting to do this. I don't want to waste my fucking energy trying to train them to man/woman/non-binary up and be friggin grownups. Not my circus, not my monkeys, and most certainly, not my cage. Now that the intro is finished, the goals. I want: 1) A home that is mine. Not living in a hippie garbage can or benign drug house, albeit one with a chill vibe, in a nice neighborhood full of little-free-libraries, with nice people who are doing their best so you can't really blame them. But goddammit, I want different. It scared me that this was becoming my life. Is this my scene? What about my goals? I got negative and bitchy, and eventually exploded despite your stellar hospitality. I'm trying to work on these things at my own place, but humans are influenced by their friends. I need to distance myself until my living space at Hawk's Ridge is up to my standards, I need to work on that. Yours can be whatever you want it to be. And the hypothetical me with my shit together would give zero fucks about that, once I'm confident that I have my own standards in place. Otherwise, I get very anxious. 2) A solid community of friends and family who are "going places" in life, to the best of their individual ability (which does not mean under the constant influence of recreational yet legal prescriptions.) I'm not judging, given my penchant for these, and the fact that I'm starting NA tonight. Legal drugs that become a grey area between therapeutic and recreational are fun, but they won't help you achieve you goals. Anxiolytics are for anxiety, or the dentist. Vicodin is for pain and don't mix either with copious amounts of alcohol. That's why you spend too much time throwing up instead of doing fun things, like a cancer patient with much nicer hair. Also, drink water if you want to keep up with Mexicans, working in the hot sun without getting heat exhaustion. Common sense, people. I'm not saying your pain isn't real but some of it is your doing, just like some of mine is my doing. We have to hold ourselves accountable, better ourselves, drink and smoke weed socially and responsibly on VACATION (not stupidly or ever before getting behind the wheel.) Get with the program. People with more obstacles than solid doctors, helpful family, and a paid-off home do it every day. This was what I was keeping to myself until I said it in the wrong way while crying in your bathtub, "communicating" why I was harshing your buzz with my negativity. At the time, I had had a Klonopin, a Xanax, a Vicodin, another Xanax, another Xanax, and alcohol. I'm not a puker. I'm a cathartic, brutally honest crier, which is as bad a vomit in its own way. It smells better but takes longer to clean up. I'm sorry I hurt that sweet boy's feelings through the wall and seemed ungrateful for your hospitality. It's my fault for taking all those drugs, but I wasn't comfortable, something was wrong, I couldn't put my finger on it, and I repressed it with anything available to keep from being rude. It didn't work. There was truth in what I said, but the way I put it was mean, and unnecessary. Holding stuff in is bad for me. You said communicate. I said what I said and if I hadn't said it then, I would have done so eventually. Yes, I am grateful to people who open their homes to me, go on adventures with me, share their possessions with me. Catharsis can be cruel. I can't hang around you when I have 99 problems to solve already. Whether you would even want that is a mystery to me. I'll be busy but I still care. Though, I expect at this point, it's tl;dr for the both of you. That's another thing. Friends are people for whom tl;dr does not exist, unless they've had a stroke or something. 3) If there is a love mate out there for me, a soulmate if such a thing exists, I want to encounter this person on my adventures. I don't chase or look, because it depresses me and reduces love "such that it is" to consumption, or a meal ticket, a housing situation, a drug connection, a business deal, or a codependent puddle of mutual enabling. It's worse than any drug, save needles, meth, or crack, and all too often often, "love" drives otherwise healthy people down that road. 4. I want to go to Boulder, CO, my own personal Mecca. My condolences that police and a drugged hippie were mutually stupid and it resulted in tragedy. I mean the guy was strung out running naked in public. The worst child murder/ rape in recent memory went down there too, but people move on and this is where I want to live. This is my goal and I'm strong enough to not let news reports stop me from achieving what I want. 5. I want my MLIS and I will get it in December. When I get my debt and income under control, I want to participate in a BA to MD/PH.D program because once I'm stable, and clean, I know I can buckle down, tear through that MCAT and make it happen. See, when I was messed up, I at least knew enough not to hurt myself or spend the next day vomiting. Let's turn this sad, low-rent talent of mine into something that can help people. Want to be: medical librarian, doctor, medical PH.D (You heard me: MUD/FUDD), writer,Gonzo blogger, adventurer, world traveler, and at times, gainfully unemployed. These will all happen if I go to my meetings and follow Dr. Robert's advice: Get clean, hang out only with stable people who are tackling their goals, and achieve my scholarly potential, which truth be told, is at least a Masters' and an M.D/Ph.D. Not to brag, but that potential is somewhere between Lisa Simpson and Malcolm in the MIddle. (Meaning I'm probably a crazy genius, and if I'm retarded, John is a vegetable, organic I hope, so as compost he can me useful.) People say all the time that you're too old to start over. If someone can't do it they want to tell you that you can't either. Age is just a number. And truth be told, I'd rather die learning than being stuck in mediocrity. 6. I want happiness, stability, freedom from drama. attachment issues, an end to envy that a friend or acquaintance has someone, no matter how messed up the situation. I want independence, to control my compulsive, self destructive need to help others when there's shit I have to do for myself, just to prove my worth and keep them from leaving me. I end up burnt out and I become unnecessarily honest at people. I need to trust my vibes. If a situation feels icky or grasping or just plan dirty, I'm out. It's been real. Thanks for having me. Time to go slay the other goals. 7. MONEY...ENOUGH money that I have everything I want and need, within reason and accounting for storage space: a home, a housekeeper, or at least some kind of professional organizer to help me with cleaning and beautifying my abode, which is not my forte. My wonderful parents Susan Coleman and Donald Jeff Martin are helping me follow my bliss. They are the absolute best parents. I can never do enough to properly thank them for giving me life, taking a great risk to do so, for my dad taking the time to give private preschool quality education to me as a toddler so now math and languages are easy, for my mom who taught me about feminism, and whether she knew it or not, supercharged my innate qualities of forthrightness, justice, and the desire to fight for what's right. Thanks for teaching me right from wrong, and taking care of me. I had an enriched life, despite our initial lack of money. That is a miracle. My parents (and my pets, and my goals) are, together MY EVERYTHING. Gratitude. Balance. Best Life. That's what I'm after. Money is the tool to reach goals, not the goal itself. 8. Lastly, I want adventure....safe, but not so safe that it isn't fun. Exploring the world, writing, experiencing, living. This alone will keep me from getting sucked into any sexist bullshit or dysfunctional "love" vortex. When I achieve THAT, the desire to hurt myself, check out, or die will be OVER forever. I know this instinctively. That's the GP. Hell. I might become a GP. But, I'd prefer something more Housean, such as Pathology or Internal Medicine, I am the queen of my castle. But, to paraphrase Marley, that castle is in my MIND. To paraphrase Thoreau, my castles in the sky are the shit. Now they and I need a proper FOUNDATION. None of this is meant to be a mean dig at Jexi. I call you this because I know you as a unit. Who are each of you individually?(Also, I don't think either of you are notorious enough to be figured out by that alone, so I'm attempting discretion.) This is just my perspective. My truth. Thank you's to: Gino Dykstra, Amy, the therapist, Doctor Robert Wesner, Dr Widitz, Dr. Don St. John, and Linda the P.C, and all the people from Partial Hospitalization and STEPPS. If I forget someone, add yourself. Oh, Lori Parrish Niemi, Christina Morris Penn-Goetsch, William Niemi, Jexi, for helping me gain this insight, and Keith E Gatling. Weirdly, I am also grateful for that squirrelly, two-faced bastard, John Trachsel, who made himself useful for the first time ever, by convincing me to abandon my impulsive suicide gesture. He didn't know who he was talking to so he treated me like a person/ possible lay for a while and pretended to care, right up until the point where he learned he had called me. I could hear him backtracking because he doesn't want people to know he talks to me. When I called him out on this, he called me crazy, "retarded", and finally admitted that he didnt want people to know he talked to me. He, in a his glory thinks he's too good to talk to me? I have his mugshot on my hard drive, named "ThereISAGod.jpg." This is bullshit because most people have no problem acting like a god-damn human toward me. Anyway, this is proof that even a shmuck-a- fuck like him may sometimes do good things by accident. Of course, if he'd caught on quicker, I think that he would have hung up immediately. If he, for one second believed that I, Hanna Martin. was distraught, suicidal, and in need of help, hell, that was his goal anyway, right? But screw you, I didn't kill myself. My point is that even though you badly need therapy and other help, you are not completely useless. There may still be inpatient help for you and I no longer wish you dead. Thanks to all who have helped. One day at a time.

Oh my goodness… I don’t even know how to reply to this!
That is all so sweet of you to say! This is probably one of the nicest anonymous asks I’ve ever gotten, and it really does mean a lot to read this <3
To be honest I think we are all just gradually learning who we really are as we go through life, it probably never really ends. It’s a very scary thing sometimes, but I’m glad that I could help you a little bit with your own journey.
Thank you so much for the love, you are super stellar and cool!

Iran’s Government Is Using Crypto Startups as Part of Its Blockchain Embrace
Iran’s central bank is working with a pair of blockchain startups that are developing what could be the groundwork for a new token ecosystem, CoinDesk has learned.
Many government banks around the world have launched isolated blockchain pilots. But in January, the Central Bank of Iran unveiled plans for a more comprehensive cryptocurrency program at Tehran’s Electronic Banking and Payments conference. While the new framework – which includes restrictions on accepting or sending bitcoin payments as well as supportive measures for bank-issued cryptocurrencies – is not yet approved, Iranian sources say it’s in the process of becoming law.
Sources tell CoinDesk the projects have earned the support of the central bank’s technology arm, the Informatics Services Corporation (ISC). What’s more, private banks in the country have stepped up to fund one of the startups in a move that could pave the way for the issuance of the first native Iranian cryptocurrency.
One of those initiatives is the Kuknos protocol, created by a new Tehran-based startup called Kuknos Company, which was funded with government approval by private banks and granted permission to issue a gold-backed token called Paymon. A complementary infrastructure project called Borna is being developed in a private-public partnership and is funded directly by the Central Bank of Iran.
One anonymous source working within the ISC told CoinDesk that the two startups are helping to modernize Iran’s financial infrastructure.
The first startup, Kuknos Company, was recently founded with just under 20 employees, according to Kuknos advisor Soheil Nikzad. The company is receiving funding from private Iranian banks like Bank Mellat, Bank Melli Iran, Bank Pasargad and Parsian Bank.
Nikzad told CoinDesk the company will release Paymon, the gold-backed cryptocurrency, in a multi-stage token sale, including a private sale to banks and eventually a public securities offering akin to stocks. The Kuknos protocol will also include a system for tokenizing traditional assets like real estate, he said.
Speaking about the public phase of the upcoming Paymon token sale, Nikzad said:
“The third phase is for everybody and will depend on the regulation of the security market in Iran. Right now we are negotiating with [regulators].”
At the same time Borna – the second blockchain project presented with government approval at the same conference in Tehran in January – is being developed by the startup Areatak in conjunction with the ISC.
Areatak is a bitcoin industry incumbent that previously garnered most of its funding through the local cryptocurrency mining boom. Part of this startup is now housed inside ISC’s Tehran office, where it is developing a national system for identity verification and token management, according to the anonymous source within the organization.
Although Nikzad said several local projects have reached out to Kuknos seeking guidance for prospective initial coin offerings, it appears that for the foreseeable future, Iranian banks will be the main issuers of approved cryptocurrencies.
“There are at least 50 blockchain startups in Iran,” Nikzad said. Speaking of the broader Iranian market he added:
“They are doing their best and waiting for their destiny, to connect to the other bankers abroad.”
Token economy
“The most important advantages of Borna is the know-your-customer process and compatibility with the revised Payment Service Directive implementation,” Iranian entrepreneur Amir Abbas Emani told CoinDesk, describing how both governmental blockchain projects could complement each other.
“Kuknos is another banking consortium blockchain using Stellar architecture for tokenization of assets such as gold, real estate, fiat currencies and other assets,” Emani said.
If the Securities and Exchange Organization of Iran approves regulations for non-governmental entities to issue tokens, Emani’s crypto startup CarChain aims to use these systems for an initial coin offering in 2019. CarChain is very similar to the ride-sharing app Uber except it accepts token payments and would leverage distributed networks for enhanced privacy features.
Speaking of the new banking plans, Emani said:
“It could help us. [The government] knows the benefits of the blockchain are not confined to [circumnavigating] sanctions.”
On sanctions
Global media sources have speculated about Iran seeking to leverage cryptocurrencies to bypass economic sanctions, which restrict U.S. banks and organizations from doing business with the Iranian finance sector.
The anonymous Iranian source with knowledge of ISC’s work said such a project would be “too suspicious” for the governmental bank. Borna, ISC’s Hyperledger-based project, is focused on modernizing and standardizing digital infrastructure across domestic business sectors like insurance and healthcare.
Plus, any individuals involved with a project deliberately designed to evade sanctions would likely find themselves personally subject to sanctions if they traveled abroad.
Likewise, Nikzad said that even though the private sector’s Kuknos system will be more compatible with international finance systems, its main goal is to reduce costs and friction for domestic Iranian transactions.
“By implementing new standards, based on international standards, you are able to make systems that are ready to connect to international ones,” Nikzad said. “Even if they don’t connect abroad, at least they’ve improved Iranian payment systems and decreased costs.”
For now, Nikzad said Kuknos is focused on establishing strategic pilots with local mobile operators, insurance companies and other enterprise banking customers.
Much like the broader cryptocurrency space, the aim is to make significant portions of the Kuknos ecosystem from open source software and to also release additions on platforms like GitHub, so that any developer around the world could contribute to or integrate these Iranian systems.
Despite the government’s stringent approach to bitcoin, the anonymous Iranian source said he was neither disappointed nor surprised.
“I personally wouldn’t expect anything else from Iran’s central bank other than they acknowledge the technology that is changing the world,” he said, noting the government’s “conservative” approach to decentralized currencies.

Nancy Baker, Black Cloud, 26" x 26", Paint and mixed media on hand and laser cut paper, 2018 Geometry October 26 - December 8, 2018 Opening Reception: Thursday, November 8, 2018
[Images] [Essay by Julian Kreimer] Philadelphia, PA - Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia is pleased to present Geometry, an exhibition featuring the work of Nancy Baker, Julia Bland, Lindsey Landfried, Kayla Mattes, Alex Paik, and Caroline Santa. Mathematical geometry is concerned with the size, shape, positions of figures, and qualities of space; geometric forms and their transformations build the substance of architectural design. This exhibition brings together six artists who construct a type of architecture through an individual, steadfast, noble gesture. These geometries transcend their basic unit, whether through the repetition of a form, a mark or fold, or the meditation of the over/under act of weaving. ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Nancy Baker builds intricate, universe-like, paper constructions and installations which feel similarly large and small, strong and fragile. Baker finds “solace in the geometry of fundamentals . . . she interweaves mathematical data in her constructions that speak to her need for stasis and a reliable reality.” Nancy Baker earned her BFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, NY. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the US, including ODETTA Gallery in Brooklyn, NY; Front Room Gallery in Brooklyn, NY; Mark Moore Gallery, CA; Winkleman Gallery, NYC; Schema Projects, Brooklyn, NY; Marcia Wood Gallery, Atlanta, GA; Greenhill Center, Greensboro, NC; Jancar Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; NC Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC; 1708 Gallery, Richmond VA; Heriard Cimino Gallery in NOLA; and Lump Gallery, Raleigh, NC. Nancy Baker has received numerous awards, including two North Carolina Artists Fellowships, a Tennessee Individual Artist Fellowship, and an NEA Southern Arts Fellowship. Baker was awarded a commission with MTA Arts and Design for two train stations in Brooklyn, which was fabricated in stainless steel and was recently commissioned to create a new work for Karen Brooks Hopkins, the Director of Brooklyn Academy of Music. Julia Bland’s works incorporate painting and weaving, developing the structures and patterns that bind disparate elements into a whole. Through weaving, cutting, sewing, dying, and painting, the surface becomes a visible record of her evolving, multi-faceted process. “Weaving and painting are two kinds of binding: the warp to the weft, the image to the object. Geometry is a kind of grammar; process is a kind of syntax. Logic is pervasive, it fails, and it persists.” Bland’s solo exhibitions include Ways To Cross at Lighthouse Works and Underbelly at Helena Anrather in 2018, Things to Say at Night at 17 Essex in 2017, and If You Want To Be Free at On Stellar Rays in 2015. Reviews of her work have appeared in The New York Times, Art in America, Art Critical, Modern Painters, The New Yorker, The Villager, Artefuse, Hyperalleric, and Sculpture Magazine. She has been an artist in residence at MacDowell, The Shandaken Project: Storm King, The Sharpe- Walentas Space Program, Yaddo, Lighthouse Works, The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and received awards including The Milton and Sally Avery fellowship from Yaddo, the Carol Scholsberg Memorial Prize, The Jacques and Natasha Gelman Trust Travel Fellowship, and The Florence Leif Award for Excellence in Painting. She received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2008 and her MFA from Yale School of Art in 2012. The mark making of Lindsey Landfried’s folded works on paper evokes an ephemeral handwriting like binary code or weaving. “Folds incorporate a patina of space, shifting vantage points or perspectival spaces. The marks, incessant and reverent writing, or obsessive and mechanized weaving, are on once stable, marred, noisy, staccato, and inconsistent.” Lindsey Landfried lives and works in State College, PA. Her work has been exhibited at Momenta Art, Temporary Storage, Tiger Strikes Asteroid NY, SPACE Gallery of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Mississippi State University, and Space 4 Art: San Diego. Landfried was a 2014-15 recipient of a Pollock-Krasner award and a 2013 fellow of the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst for artistic practice. She has completed residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Vermont Studio Center, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and Takt Kunstraum Tapir Berlin. Featured in New American Paintings and winner of the 2015 jurors award at the UNC Asheville Works on Paper Biennial, she is represented by KWADRAT Berlin and Galleri Urbane Dallas Texas. Kayla Mattes’ luscious tapestries explore systems of organization in contemporary life, and the ephemerality of digital culture. “I submit myself to the grid-like structure of the loom, but break down –and occasionally play with – its preconceived assumptions of utility or the decorative. . . Whether I’m simply dismantling the rectangle, or subverting tradition through the contemporary imagery and language that I depict within the weave, I embrace the power of textiles to communicate. In the end, what materializes is a series of layered visual systems—organized yet unruly, witty and absurd.” Kayla Mattes is a visual artist working across disciplines including weaving, sculpture and installation. She archives the ephemeral vernacular of digital culture through the interconnected threads of tapestry. She also works collaboratively in the socially engaged collective, BESTTEST. Recent exhibitions include PØST, (Los Angeles, CA), FISK Gallery (Portland, OR), LVL3 (Chicago, IL), Disjecta Contemporary Art Center (Portland, OR), Border Patrol Gallery (Portland, ME) and Hunter College (NYC). Her work has been featured in Maake Magazine, Vice’s Creators, Rhizome, and Sculpture Magazine and will be included in Weavers: Contemporary Makers on the Loom, an upcoming book written by Katie Tregidden and published by Ludion. She received a BFA in Textiles at Rhode Island School of Design in 2011 and is currently an MFA candidate at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Alex Paik’s paper based installations are at once effortless and awe-inspiring. Each piece is temporary, and can be reconfigured. Paik’s work has a strong connection to the architectural build up and break down of contrapuntal music. He uses “repetition not so much as a compositional device, but more as a way to explore and develop the possibilities of each unit. Or, to borrow Glenn Gould’s description of Bach’s late fugues, to “give the impression of an infinitely expanding universe.” Alex Paik is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work has been shown at galleries and art fairs nationally and internationally. He is the founder and Director of Tiger Strikes Asteroid, a non-profit network of artist-run spaces; Curator of Satellite Art Show, an alternative art fair in Miami; and Chief Curator at Trestle Gallery, a non- profit arts organization in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Caroline Santa’s works on paper drawings and paintings are incremental installations or interchangeable parts that can be reworked and recontextualized, much like text or language. “Like Schwitters’ Merzbau, I think about my work as existing in its current scale or expanding into larger architectural environments, enveloping a viewer’s personal or mental space.” Based in Philadelphia, Caroline Santa has an M.F.A. from The University of Pennsylvania and is a recipient of The Charles Addams Prize. She has exhibited her work throughout the northeast in Philadelphia and New York, as well as in San Antonio, TX at The Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum. Internationally, Caroline was an artist in residence at the Lucy Tejada Center of Culture in Pereira, Colombia, where she had a solo exhibition. Caroline is a founding member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid. Caroline recently collaborated with the Grammy Award winning choir The Crossing and composer Joshua Stamper to create a multimedia installation in The Icebox, Philadelphia’s largest uninterrupted gallery space.

This Bitcoin 2.zero presentation incorporates more data on the considering behind the protocol. Last January it claimed a famous sufferer: longtime Core developer Mike Hearn, who give up the bitcoin world dramatically (paywall) because of the block measurement deadlock. And so what I believe we'll end up operating right into a tautology with smart contracts, it is going to be used by people who need to make use of them. It's precisely the identical software program as Core, however with additional patches that trigger it to forged a vote for raising the restrict. A robust bitcoin index, uniquely designed to stop manipulation, serving because the reference rate for tens of hundreds of thousands of dollars of registered spinoff products. Hearn's essay touches on various matters that he feels have collectively wrecked the Bitcoin concept. I developed arbing software to observe horse racing arbs on ~15 bookies with sub 1 second refresh rates. Bitcoin adoption has continued to grow over the past few years, to eventually attain a market capitalisation of almost US 7 billion dollars. At any time when you are going brief on a BitAsset, you must present a margin requirement equal to 2x the market value of the BitAsset, in the type of Bitshares. There are so many ways in which bitcoin is kind of broken in comparison with the beliefs of the group that are much more involved than blocksize, and I'd even written about these problems in June of final year, because the block size debate was amidst rising to crescendo. Mr. Andresen does not repeatedly publish to his weblog, but when he does, the Bitcoin developer group pays consideration. It pretty much dumb down the whole buying and selling process so you can concentrate on what's actually matter…when to buy low and promote high. in space and time, demonstrating that a new window in astronomy has been firmly opened. As was the case with the first two detections, the waves were generated when two black holes collided to form a larger black hole. The newfound black hole, formed by the merger, has a mass about 49 times that of our sun. This fills in a gap between the masses of the two merged black holes detected previously by LIGO, with solar masses of 62 (first detection) and 21 (second detection). LIGO made the first-ever direct observation of gravitational waves in September 2015 during its first observing run since undergoing major upgrades in a program called Advanced LIGO. The second detection was made in December 2015. The third detection, called GW170104 and made on January 4, 2017, is described in a new paper accepted for publication in the journal Physical Review Letters. In all three cases, each of the twin detectors of LIGO detected gravitational waves from the tremendously energetic mergers of black hole pairs. These are collisions that produce more power than is radiated as light by all the stars and galaxies in the universe at any given time. The recent detection appears to be the farthest yet, with the black holes located about 3 billion light-years away. (The black holes in the first and second detections are located 1.3 and 1.4 billion light-years away, respectively.) The newest observation also provides clues about the directions in which the black holes are spinning. As pairs of black holes spiral around each other, they also spin on their own axes—like a pair of ice skaters spinning individually while also circling around each other. Sometimes black holes spin in the same overall orbital direction as the pair is moving—what astronomers refer to as aligned spins—and sometimes they spin in the opposite direction of the orbital motion. What's more, black holes can also be tilted away from the orbital plane. Essentially, black holes can spin in any direction. "This is the first time that we have evidence that the black holes may not be aligned, giving us just a tiny hint that binary black holes may form in dense stellar clusters," says Bangalore Sathyaprakash of Penn State and Cardiff University, one of the editors of the new paper, which is authored by the entire LSC and Virgo Collaborations. There are two primary models to explain how binary pairs of black holes can be formed. The first model proposes that the black holes are born together: they form when each star in a pair of stars explodes, and then, because the original stars were spinning in alignment, the black holes likely remain aligned. In the other model, the black holes come together later in life within crowded stellar clusters. The black holes pair up after they sink to the center of a star cluster. In this scenario, the black holes can spin in any direction relative to their orbital motion. Because LIGO sees some evidence that the GW170104 black holes are non-aligned, the data slightly favor this dense stellar cluster theory. The study also once again puts Albert Einstein's theories to the test. For example, the researchers looked for an effect called dispersion, which occurs when light waves in a physical medium such as glass travel at different speeds depending on their wavelength; this is how a prism creates a rainbow. Einstein's general theory of relativity forbids dispersion from happening in gravitational waves as they propagate from their source to Earth. LIGO did not find evidence for this effect. "It looks like Einstein was right—even for this new event, which is about two times farther away than our first detection," says Laura Cadonati of Georgia Tech and the Deputy Spokesperson of the LSC. "We can see no deviation from the predictions of general relativity, and this greater distance helps us to make that statement with more confidence."

Searches for stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds. (arXiv:1909.00269v1 [gr-qc])
These lecture notes provide a brief introduction to methods used to search for a stochastic background of gravitational radiation---a superposition of gravitational-wave signals that are either too weak or too numerous to individually detect. The focus of these notes is on relevant data analysis techniques, not on the particular astrophysical or cosmological sources that are responsible for producing the background. The lecture notes are divided into two main parts: (i) an overview, consisting of a description of different types of gravitational-wave backgrounds and an introduction to the method of cross-correlating data from multiple detectors, which can be used to extract the signal from the noise; (ii) details, extending the previous discussion to non-trivial detector response, non-trivial overlap functions, and a recently proposed Bayesian method to search for the gravitational-wave background produced by stellar-mass binary black hole mergers throughout the universe. Suggested exercises for the reader are given throughout the text, and compiled in an appendix.
