HIRAETH TASK 002. / Social Media
Doctor Creed has no idea about his following. He just likes sharing his daily life at the hospital and everything he's up to there. He cares deeply about his students and residents, so he'll always follow them and support them as best he can. There's not a ton on his personal life, and that's because he wants to remain trustworthy in the eyes of the public. He adopts a more laid-back approach on Murmur but still utilizes it to share hospital events and news.

three playlists: benjamin creed
IN THE BLOOD - JOHN MAYER songs that remind me of him // (playlist)
How much of my mother has my mother left in me? How much of my love will be insane to some degree? And what about this feeling that I'm never good enough? Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood? I can feel the love I want, I can feel the love I need But it's never gonna come the way I am Could I change it if I wanted? Can I rise above the flood? Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?
LIKE A STONE - AUDIOSLAVE songs that he would listen to // (playlist)
And on I read until the day was gone And I sat in regret of all the things I've done For all that I've blessed and all that I've wronged In dreams until my death, I will wander on In your house, I long to be Room by room, patiently I'll wait for you there like a stone I'll wait for you there alone, alone
INVISIBLE STRING - TAYLOR SWIFT songs that remind me of his ship // (playlist)
Time, mystical time Cutting me open, then healing me fine Were there clues I didn't see? And isn't it just so pretty to think All along there was some Invisible string Tying you to me? Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh A string that pulled me Out of all the wrong arms right into that dive bar Something wrapped all of my past mistakes in barbed wire Chains around my demons Wool to brave the seasons One single thread of gold tied me to you

Hello, all! I’m Momo!
I’m here to write! I used to write fanfics in my youth, but stopped a long time ago. Now that I’ve gotten older and know somewhat how writing is actually supposed to be done, I’m here to pick up again! I may also occasionally throw in a few song lyric posts, maybe we can enjoy and discover music together!
Let’s start with the fandoms. I’m not in too many fandoms. But here’s the list:
•Call of Duty (Mainly Task Force 141, but I will do other characters as my knowledge allows. I’m not a Ghoap shipper, sorry.)
•Marvel (There’s really no stipulations here, I’ve been a Marvel girlie for years.)
•9-1-1 (I am not a Buddie shipper. I’m not against it, but I don’t actively promote it.)
•Assassin’s Creed (I have no stipulations for this one, just don’t make it weird.)
•Skyrim (I’m not super familiar with all the characters, but I will educate myself if someone wants something specific.)
•The Legend of Zelda (My first video game love! I probably won’t write for this as much as the others, tbh…)
•You most certainly can send in song requests to have me do a post on! I listen to pretty much everything, but my favorites include:
•Avenged Sevenfold
•Sleep Token
•Breaking Benjamin
•Nickelback
•5 Seconds of Summer
Now let’s get into the ground rules:
•I will not write smut. I’m not comfortable writing that style of literature, but suggestive content is a whole different matter.
•No non-con/rape. I think that’s pretty self explanatory.
•I will not write ANYTHING pertaining to children/underaged individuals. (The only exception being the protagonist as a child or if the protagonist has children.)
•MINORS DO NOT INTERACT. I’m a grown woman with no reason to converse with children.
Now that that’s out of the way, let’s have some fun! I’m ready to write all the fluff, angst, and hurt/comfort your heart desires! Let’s be as delulu as we want! Just send me a request! I encourage imagines, one shots, preferences and headcannons! I’m also a big fan of all the vanilla tropes! Please understand that I am an adult with an adult job (I am a licensed nurse) and may not be able to reply right away, but I promise I will write ASAP! I love you guys and if you ever need anything, my inbox is open! Take care, lovelies!
-Momo

some unreasonable gripes i have about assassin's creed iii after being 250 hrs in on a hunt for the ps platinum trophy: a list brought to you by aurora
• not enough fast travel points in the frontier. and that might be bearable, if only the horse mechanic didn't constantly feel like i'm riding around on a lego block
• i should be able to remove my notoriety in the frontier. the perma 1 star wanted level is fucking annoying when i'm trying to clean up post-main game side quests
• the glitch where sometimes when you catch a almanac page it won't register on your codex as collected and will show up on your map to go get it again :))))
• the 'encyclopedia of the common man' quest. having to go around and scan all the villagers doing multiple activities but sometimes some of them won't do that last activity you need. like ellen bestie pls stop doing the same two tasks every day and go do the laundry so i can scan you I AM BEGGING.
• the commitment to historical inaccuracy but in very odd and specific ways like don't piss me off LAFAYETTE DID NOT DRESS AS A WOMAN TO COME TO AMERICA THAT WAS DEBUNKED WHY IS HE HAVING A FULL CONVO WITH CONNOR ABOUT IT @ VALLEY FORGE
• ^ but also on the flip side of the accuracy gripe, why can't i lay the smack down on george washington???? if i can shoot charles lee for funsies in sequence 2 without consequence as haytham (in the benjamin church mission, try it, it's v cathartic and amusing) then i should be able to shoot georgie. just one bullet. pls.
• everything about the tyranny of king washington dlc. no really. everything about it. of all the alternate universes you could've made a dlc about why couldn't it have been 'if haytham had been an assassin not a templar'. trust me we don't need a dlc around the idea of georgie being a tyrannical leader. he owned hundreds of slaves and bought their teeth for his own benefits. that's enough proof of his actual tyranny for me thanks !!!
• the fact that ubisoft packaged the dlc with the main game in the remaster so to get the playstation platinum trophy you have to 100% the dlc as well as the main story
#'do you take constructive criticism?' no :D#that's why i said they're probably unreasonable lol#also despite this list i assure u i do have a great deal of affection for this game lol#assassin's creed#ro.doc

Five comfort characters, five tags
Well, who would've thought I'd be tagged in something like this... not me 😂
Thanks @kindaconfusingme for thinking of me. Though I have to admit this task turned out to be rather hard for me, especially since I approached it with an "easy peasy lemon squeazy" kind of attitude. Turns out I got a lot of comfort things: books, movies, music, food, clothing... but comfort characters? A character that gives me comfort solely by existing and not as part of a story? Surprisingly, I had trouble naming even one character, let alone five...
Now, enough whining about my sorrows concerning this tag game. Please, enjoy this list of comfort(-ish) characters I compiled in no particular order.
Luke Skywalker (Star Wars) - he was actually the first to pop up in my mind when thinking of a comfort character. A few years ago this would have surprised even myself since I've always enjoyed Anakin and his dynamics with other characters far more than Luke. But since Disney keeps shitting out new material Luke made his appearance again and I have to admit that I was deeply moved by his appearance, it had a feeling similar to coming home after a long journey. It just felt good and comforting for some reason. So congratulations Luke, you earned yourself a place in this tag game.
Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce and B.J. Hunnicut (MASH) - I simply adore this series for several reasons but these two are clearly one of them. I love how they use jokes and pranks to make their lives in a war more bearable, their sharp and biting sarcasm, but how they still know when to be serious and show vulnerability, their humanity, which sometimes is hard to maintain in a war. The way they take care of themselves and their friends when they are about to break and shatter from what's happening all around them is very moving for me.
Alicia Gris and Juan Manuel Vargas (The Labyrinth of the Spirits) - not sure whether these two (who count as one by the way) really fit the term "comfort" character but at least they have lived rent free in my head ever since I read the book. Regarding all the pain and unhealed trauma they just ignore and never talk about the "comfort" part might not be fitting but I love them and their dynamic so incredibly much that they earned their spotlight here. (My fave BroTP/OTP... can't decide which is better (Both. Both is good))
Ezio Auditore da Firenze (Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood and Relations) - my video game husband. Do I need to add more? The Prince Charming is cute, funny and knows how to stab people. What else would you want??
Erend (Horizon Zero Dawn) - this might be my latest hyperfixation speaking but so what.. big, tough guy strong enough to swing a battle axe as if it were a toothpick who is actually kind of a cinnamon roll and a sweet dumbass trying his best? (He's a little confused, but he's got the spirit) Sign me up! Also a fan of whatever is going on with the hair and the beard.
This took and turned out way longer than I thought, so thanks for coming to my Ted talk, I guess.
As for the tagging: everyone who reads this and wants to do this as well, feel tagged. Apart from that, @book-full-of-dreams have fun.

Maybe Forever
I did two remixes this year, and for @rnmremix I took on @daughterofelros and her story Maybe Someday which is about Michael plantsitting Alex’s plants. I turned it around, and this has Alex plantsitting Michael’s plants. I angsted in this, but the ending is still happy. Happy reading!
Ao3
It takes him by surprise when he gets the question, as it’s something he never thought Michael would ever be a fan of. Not because it’s wrong, immoral, strange or anything like that. He just didn’t expect it. Because, you know, it’s... Plants. Green things with foliage and sometimes flowers in all different shapes and sizes. Michael is rough, wild curly hair, motor oil, science and sass. Plants don't seem like something he would enjoy or care about. But here he is, down in Michael’s bunker where plants really shouldn’t thrive. But they are. Thriving, that is. Growing wild and beautiful in what is seemingly organized chaos around Michael’s science equipment and feats of mechanical engineering.
“This is what you want me to watch for you? Plants?” he asks incredulously as he looks around.
“Yeah? Something wrong with plants?”
He can hear the defensiveness in Michael’s tone of voice, and he flinches minutely. “That’s not what I meant, Guerin. I’m just surprised. I didn’t know you had them, especially down here.”
“There's nothing wrong with keeping plants down here you know.”
“I know that,” Alex says, his own tone becoming more defensive. “I’m surprised you have plants, I didn’t know that would interest you. That’s all.”
“I can have hobbies you know,” Michael replies, looking like he’s already regretting asking Alex to water them while he’s gone for a week.
Alex just looks at him, eyebrows lifting at the way Michael is acting, wondering if they can ever be close again without bickering. Michael seems to realize it too, as his posture relaxes with a deep sigh. He’s visibly calming himself down, and Alex can’t help but admire how easily he does it. Especially since he knows it isn’t easy at all for Michael, so used to keeping the charade that keeps him and his family safe up at all times.
“Sorry. I’m being defensive for no damn reason over here.” Michael sighs again, impossibly deeper this time. Like sighing takes deep stress away from him. Maybe it does, for all Alex knows. “My mom kept plants, and could grow them with her powers. I… I wanted to try it too.”
“You’re doing a great job,” Alex says, smiling at him. It’s tentative, but honest. Real. “And I’m sorry too, I was honestly just surprised, I didn’t mean to make you feel bad about it.”
“It’s okay.” Michael smiles in return. “So. You think you could be up for it?”
“Yeah, I’ll watch over them. No promises they’ll be alive when you get back though.”
“Nah, you’re Alex Manes. You can do anything.”
The smile on Alex’s face turns wry, probably a bit unsure. It’s not true, in so many ways. But he appreciates what Michael is trying to do. The confidence he’s trying to instill in the face of a task Alex has never had before. Michael knows how uneasy he is when it comes to situations like this. But he’ll power through like he always does. Especially for Michael. And it’s plants. It can’t be that hard.
-----
He quickly finds that he’s wrong. So damned wrong. He has no idea how Michael created a thriving garden in the dark bunker but it quickly becomes apparent that Alex cannot do the same thing. He can water them and trim them if needed but three days into Michael’s week away from Roswell and they’re starting to droop. Sad, missing Michael, drooping. The worst part is he knows how they feel. And his life has officially turned even weirder now that he’s sympathizing with plants. But he can’t help but feel for them, as the flowers lose a little of their shine the longer Michael is away, how the leaves aren’t quite as green. Their person isn’t there anymore. Maybe they’ve given up on Michael coming back.
Kind of like Alex has. Oh, he knows Michael is coming back to town, he’s only in Albuquerque for a week with Isobel. But as the days grow longer the plants still turn sadder.
If he can’t do this one thing for Michael, how can he ever hope to get him back. In the way he wants, in the way it matters. Back in his arms, his life, preferably one day his, or even their, house. After Maria, after Forrest, after his dad.
Realizing he wanted Michael officially back, out, proud and completely took a long time. The knowledge of it not so hard, the need and want harder. They’ve wasted time, so much damn time. And here he is, surrounded by green and yellow and blue, things so important to Michael because his mom was supposedly good at it. And Alex is having the hardest time keeping them alive and well. It’s making him feel like his dad, trapping aliens behind glass walls and torturing them for kicks.
He just wants to do this right. Then maybe, just maybe, he can find the courage within to tell Michael his hopes. But it’s not looking too good. He’s tried everything, watering, giving them lots of light, talking to them, hanging out in the bunker in case it’ll help. But so far it’s not working and the plants just droop more by the hour. Michael coming home is still three days away, they’ll end up being dead if he can’t fix this. And he fears whatever progress they’ve made will die with them.
He’s out of options though, he doesn't know what to try next. He’s not an alien, he doesn’t have powers nor gifts with anything besides guns and computers. Neither which will be handy here. He looks around desperate to find something that can help.
He doesn’t expect to spot a guitar. The same guitar he tried gifting to Michael which failed desperately. The same guitar he regifted him later, after Maria, after Forrest. When death of loved ones and broken hearts weren’t between them. When they could actually call each other friends. Regardless if that friendship was still fraught with tension, a will they or won’t they that still weighs heavily on them. Even when they try to push past it and just be.
But the guitar means much to them. Music in general means much to them. Maybe it’ll help.
He picks it up gently, taking it out of its case with great care before running his hand over it and smiles. The strings have just been changed, Michael has been taking good care of it. Something eases inside of him when he sees that, though he doesn’t quite understand why. The guitar isn’t a symbol of their relationship, Michael making sure the guitar is in tip top shape doesn’t really mean anything. It just means he likes playing. It still brings a tingle to the pit of his stomach which he crushes swiftly and surely. There’s no point in useless hope.
He brings it over to the chair by Michael’s drawing board and sits down, settling it gently on his legs and making sure no pressure is on his prosthesis as he sits with the guitar. He takes a few deep breaths before he strums. Of course the guitar is finely tuned.
He still checks everything before softly starting to play. He’s played Wonderwall a thousand times, he’s sick as hell of it but he still plays it first every time he picks up a guitar. Old habits are hard to break. He plays bits of the melody to warm up, humming alongside it as he does. Five minutes in, he’s relaxed, he’s more settled, he feels good.
He drifts from Wonderwall, eyes closing as he moves over to various songs from Breaking Benjamin, stripped down versions of My Chemical Romance, seamlessly switching to Blink 182, Placebo, Snow Patrol and The Strokes. He loses himself in A Perfect Circle, in Third Eye Blind and The Cranberries, resurfacing after he’s hit Linkin Park, Gavin Degraw, Panic! At the Disco and the odd Spice Girls song just to switch it up.
He lets the last note fall as he breathes out, smiling at the peace he feels just from the instrument in his hands, his voice slightly raspy from singing and the contentment of being wanted and free in Michael’s space. He smiles to himself, taking another deep breath as he opens his eyes again, looking at his watch to find that almost three hours has passed since he started playing. He’s not surprised though, music has always been the place he felt the most free, the most able to be himself.
He takes another deep breath, briefly closing his eyes again as he centers himself before he looks up at the plants. They look the same, but no worse either, so he figures he’s done all he can for the day. He decides to go home for the night, he’ll come back tomorrow and continue trying his best to keep them alive. He doesn’t want to fail now.
———
The shock comes when he gets down the ladder the next evening after a gruelling day at the base. He comes down expecting the plants to be their usual droopy selves but instead he finds them perked up, their foliage nice and green, the flowers shining and pretty. He almost calls out Michael’s name to check if he’s there, but he knows he’s not, having talked to him just an hour earlier. He’s still in Albuquerque, still there for a couple days with Isobel and the newly arrived Max. Just three aliens in the big city, he’d joked, Max hissing at him to keep his voice down in the background while Isobel laughed. They deserve the time away to just be siblings, after everything. But the thrill of Michael calling him still sits in his brain, making him smile.
But there’s still the mystery of the plants. Happier plants. Plants who don’t look like they’re on the brink of giving up. And the only thing he did differently was playing guitar and singing. Maybe that’s how Michael keeps them happy. He decides not to mistrust his instincts the way he usually does and after checking the soil and making sure everything else is okay he gets out the guitar again. He still starts with Wonderwall, still hates it, still can’t break the habit. But he moves along faster than yesterday, switching to other songs of Oasis, moving along to Death Cab for Cutie, The White Stripes, Stereophonics and HIM, before jumping over to Shinedown, Muse, Journey and Creed. He plays for hours like yesterday, loves every minute of it, and feels more relaxed when he opens his eyes again at the end and sees the plants visibly better in front of his eyes.
He laughs to himself, a laugh filled with more desperation and relief than he wants to admit. But it’s okay. Maybe he can do this.
———
He spends hours down in the bunker the next two days, playing everything and anything he has in his repertoire, rediscovering the love he has for the music he grew up with and feeling the thrill of just his hands, his voice and the guitar, surrounded by Michael’s space, Michael’s plants, Michael’s mechanics. He’s surrounded in every way by Michael Guerin, and his own wants, hopes and dreams for the man and what he longs for them to become. He’s spent years away from Roswell and Michael before but now, after one week of him gone, after one week of his voice in his ears as they talk and laugh on the phone until Isobel or Max drags him away, he misses him. Misses everything that they were, everything that they are, everything that they’re heading for. And Alex knows where they’re headed, now. Knows where he wants them to head.
He’s there when he hears Michael’s truck, still playing guitar, strumming along on notes shaping up to be another song, the melody forming underneath his fingers as words form in his head. He doesn’t stop playing, but instead listens as the truck stops and Michael gets out, as his heavy steps move towards the bunker and down the ladder. He opens his eyes as Michael stops, watches him with a smile forming as Michael stares at him and the plants in awe.
“Damn Alex, I’d have stayed home if I knew listening to you play was on the menu.”
Alex snorts, stopping his strumming and placing the guitar back in the case before he gets up on his feet. “It was the only thing I could think of to keep them alive. We had a few dicey days before I started playing, and apparently they liked it.”
“You’re a good player, Alex, no wonder they liked it.”
Alex smiles, taking a step closer to Michael. “Maybe. I’m just glad I got to be here, it’s been fun.”
Michael tilts his head in that inquisitive way of his, but Alex just shakes his head. His revelations and discoveries are too heavy for this moment, he’ll get to them eventually. Michael nods, understanding without needing words that this is something to be left for now. They’re good at that, easy, silent communication. Too bad they kind of suck at the harder communication, but that’s all fixable.
“Hey. Thanks for doing this.”
“Any time, Michael.” Alex looks down for a second. “I’m happy you trusted me with this.”
“I had no doubts you could do it. The doubts were all yours.”
Alex can’t deny that’s true. But here, in the bunker, surrounded by plants and Michael smiling at him in his carefree and relaxed way, Alex feels another doubt snap. And before he lets himself second guess it, he steps forward and cradles Michael’s face in his hands. He sees the look of shock, but also the hope that blooms in Michael’s eyes and pulls him softly towards him in case Michael pulls back. But he doesn’t have to worry, Michael pushes forward as easily as Alex pulls and their lips meet softly. It’s a sweet kiss, a familiar one, but no less exciting with no small amount of fireworks firing in the pit of Alex’s belly as Michael puts his arms around his waist and pulls him closer still. It’s everything Alex wanted, everything he needs, the appreciation and love for Michael flaring as their first kiss in a long time keeps on going.
It turns from sweet to needy, to wanting, to unbelievably hot quickly, but that’s always the way it is with them. They can’t help but want each other in all ways. They both break apart at the same time, moving away from the kiss but not from each other, leaning their foreheads together as they smile and laugh at each other, their happiness bubbling between them. It’s never a question if both of them want it, they already know that. Maybe this time they can have it too.
“So,” Michael says after a while. “My plants decided to try and die on you and you got them back by singing and playing to them? How’s you figure that out?”
“Well.” Alex sneaks another kiss just because he can, a thrill going through him as Michael hums in a happy tone. “I figured you sang to them. You know, since your guitar was down here.”
Michael pulls back and gives him a puzzled look. “Alex, I live in an old airstream in the middle of a junkyard. I keep it down here so it won’t be stolen.”
“Oh,” Alex says. “I didn’t even think of that.”
“I’m glad you didn’t.” Michael kisses him again. “I’m glad you can afford not to.”
“Guerin-”
“No, Alex. Your life has been shitty enough, be happy you don’t have to worry about that too.”
“How about...” Alex pauses, gathering his courage. “How about you keep it at my place? It’ll be safe there too.”
“Oh yeah?” The smile Michael gives him is blinding, beautiful. Happy. “You wouldn’t mind having me in your space?”
Alex smiles in return. He leans in, kissing Michael dirty and hot, the way both of them want it. ”I definitely wouldn’t. I’ll even take the plants, if you want to.”
He smiles wider as Michael laughs, head thrown back with unruly curls bouncing as he does. They need to talk, figure them out and take it day by day. But he’s so gorgeous, and Alex wants to keep him forever. Him and the green things who are perking up even more in Michael’s presence. And here he thought they were bonding.
“The guitar first. The plants we can talk about down the line,” Michael replies when he finally stops laughing. He tilts his head forward, looking at Alex through long lashes. Alex feels the same want bubbling in his stomach as always. He wants Michael in his bed, in his kitchen, in his living room. He wants him close, he wants them to be good. Together. They have a long way to go still, but it feels like a beginning. It feels like hope.
“I’d like that.”

Video Game Review: Assassin’s Creed 3 (Ubisoft, 2012; Remastered 2019)
Genres: action-adventure, third person, open world
Premise: Desmond Miles and his team use the Apple of Eden to locate the Grand Temple of the First Civilization. To open it, Desmond must locate a key, known to his ancestors Haytham Kenway and Ratonhnhaké:ton (also called Connor) who were active during the American Revolution.
Platform Played On: PC (Windows)
Rating: 3.5/5 stars
***Full review under the cut.***
I am evaluating this game based on four key aspects: story, characters, gameplay, and visuals. I will be evaluating the remastered version of this game on its own terms, so I cannot speak to how it is different from the initial release.
Content Warnings: violence, blood, colonialism, racism, domestic violence
Story: Assassin’s Creed 3 initially follows Haytham Kenway, a new PC character and ancestor of Desmond Miles, as he journeys from Britain to America during the 18th century. Haytham is attempting to find the Grand Temple, a chamber once belonging to the ancient First Civilization, with the help of several colonists and a Mohawk woman named Kaniehti:io. Unable to open the Temple, Haytham initiates a romantic relationship with Kaniehti:io, resulting in a son (Ratonhnhaké:ton/Connor). It is revealed that Haytham is a Templar when he initiates one of the colonists, Charles Lee, into the order.
Years later, Ratonhnhaké:ton is now the PC character. His village is burned by Lee and his cronies, resulting in the death of his mother. The clan leader gives Ratonhnhaké:ton a sphere which contains a message from Juno. Juno leads Ratonhnhaké:ton to Achilles Davenport, a retired assassin who agrees to train him and renames him “Connor.”
The rest of the game focuses on Connor’s evolution as an assassin, his plan to seek revenge against Lee, and his angst regarding his parentage. I very much enjoyed the moral conflict in Connor’s storyline; Connor is resentful of his father’s involvement with the Templars, but also desires to find common ground with him once he hears of Haytham’s goals. I also really liked the Haytham plot twist, as it took me by surprise and prompted a lot of emotional investment in the family drama.
However, the sheer amount of things to do in the open world distracted from the plot and at times threw the pacing off. I also did not like some of the tropes that this game utilized to tell a story involving indigenous characters. Connor’s mother, Kaniehti:io, was a competent warrior and formidable personality, but was primarily present to have a white man’s child and then be killed for emotional shock value. I also don’t think this game pushed hard enough against colonialism, making the Americans out to be morally right despite their supposed “flaws” and showcasing some violence against indigenous people for shock value. However, I appreciated that this game featured many indigenous actors and put a lot of dialogue in indigenous languages.
Desmond’s story was much improved from Revelations. He’s back to working with his team, which made for fun character interactions, and his father also joins the mix, which nicely parallels the tumultuous Haytham/Connor relationship. The stakes are also much higher than in previous games regarding the First Civilization - whereas the team was previously looking for artifacts in the Ezio games, this game features the exploration of an actual Temple housing more information.
I also played the DLC, “The Tyranny of King Washington,” which follows an alternate timeline in which Washington has been corrupted by the Apple. Washington has declared himself King and rules America with ruthless tyranny. To take him down and combat the power of the Apple, Connor must channel supernatural powers derived from animal spirits. While the premise was incredibly interesting to me, the execution was rather poor, especially in terms of indigenous representation. Kaniehti:io was resurrected only to be killed again, and the story featured a lot of scenes of indigenous suffering, including slavery and violence. I also don’t think the “spirit animal” powers were portrayed in a way that was respectful of the actual religious/spiritual significance of spirit animals in Native cultures. I’m somewhat ignorant, though, so I would prioritize criticism from indigenous gamers rather than mine - see what they have to say about the base game and the DLC.

Characters: Haytham Kenway, the first PC character, is initially pretty likable in that he’s witty and charismatic. I like that he was sarcastic and seemingly well-polished, holding in his emotions like only a posh British character can. He was also shown to be brutal at the drop of a hat, and his feelings tended to get the better of him when it came to certain topics, both of which kept me on my toes. The fact that he is the first PC character creates a lot of sympathy for him, mirroring Connor’s later emotional turmoil when he’s being pressured to kill his father despite desiring an alliance.
Connor is a lot more stiff and broody, which is understandable due to the trauma in his past. While he isn’t very charismatic, I did like him as a character, since he was willing to call out the hypocrisy of everyone around him. I particularly enjoyed the way he highlighted how the Americans were all about freedom for the select (white) few - no one, not even Washington, escapes criticism, and it was refreshing to see a non-idealized portrait of the Founding Fathers through Connor’s eyes. Connor did have his sweeter moments, especially when interacting with the people living on his homestead, and I loved when he found joy in the family he made. I do wish he had been given more joy throughout the game - he so rarely expresses positive emotions that he seems like a stick in the mud.
Side characters, such as the Founding Fathers, were well-realized in that they weren’t portrayed as heroes. Washington is shown to be unable to deal with problems in any way other than by violence, and Adams is called out for his insistence that white colonists need to be free before enslaved Africans can be freed. NPCs living on the homestead are also given unique conflicts and storylines that made them feel real, and being able to converse with them at any point in the game was a fun way to feel connected to them.
Desmond is back to being his pre-Revelations self, balancing charisma and determination in a way that makes him compelling. Nothing is necessarily new regarding his characterization, so he acts more like a staple that links the Ezio games to the Haytham/Connor story, making them feel part of the same continuity.

Gameplay: I really enjoyed the way much of the gameplay from the previous Assassin’s Creed games is updated and reimagined for an 18th century setting. Parkour/free running is simplified, and target lock has been eliminated for a more fluid combat experience. Players also no longer need to use medicine to heal, as health regenerates automatically with time. Players can also use more of the environment to assist with stealth; haystacks and wells make a reappearance, as well as groups of people for blending, but Connor can also hide in tall grass, bushes, and behind corners. I also liked that Connor could whistle to lure enemies towards a hiding spot before taking them out.
In terms of weapons, Connor has access to some staples, such as the hidden blade, sword, bow, pistol, etc. but also has some interesting options, such as the tomahawk and rope dart. All of these options were simple to use and required very little practice to get right, though combat itself felt significantly more difficult than in previous games. Several enemies are difficult to take down, such as the Scotsmen wielding giant axes, but players who like a challenge might enjoy the increase in difficulty.
Connor can also recruit new assassins and level up their abilities, similar to Ezio’s actions in Brotherhood. The recruits are able to be used in a number of new ways, not just in a fight, which makes them fun to play around with.
Connor is also able to control his notoriety in much the same way that Ezio could, though instead of “heralds,” there are “town criers” and instead of assassinating a corrupt official, Connor can bribe a printer to create counter-propaganda. Pretty clever, if you ask me.
Collectibles such as Benjamin Franklin’s almanac pages, feathers, and treasure chests are also available and pretty standard - you collect them, you get rewards. Connor can also participate in side quests and challenges, such as a fight club and assassination contracts. To move around the large map, Connor can use fast travel, though to be honest, the map was so big that exploring it all could get tedious.
Also returning is the concept of full synchronization, which was a pain. Like the Ezio games, conditions for full sync did add some challenge to the game, but it was incredibly annoying to do a mission over and over again in order to reach 100%. I’d much rather have a single goal and go about it my own way without the impression of being penalized (even if that penalty doesn’t affect the gaming experience overall).
In terms of the economy, Connor is tasked with managing a homestead. Instead of improving the property or buying monuments, Connor recruits tradesmen such as loggers, miners, and farmers, as well as artisans such as tailors, innkeepers, and blacksmiths. The former group produces raw materials which can be turned into crafted goods by the latter, which Connor then puts on a caravan to be sold in town. Profits enable Connor to buy more weapons and consumables, and tradesmen/craftmen can be leveled up to produce more profitable goods through “homestead missions” which advance NPC stories.
Hunting is also introduced as a way for Connor to gain resources (such as pelts and meat), which are then used for crafting or for sale at trading posts. To hunt, Connor can use a range of tricks, including reading the environment for clues, planting snares, and using bait to lure skittish animals. I liked that hunting was always an option, but never required, since actually finding certain animals could be a chore. Connor also has the option of playing games such as Nine Men’s Morris to earn money through gambling at taverns, though I personally never opted for that. I did think the idea was clever, as it was a neat way to include micro-games in the larger structure.
By far, the most interesting new addition was naval combat. Connor can upgrade his ship, the Aquila, and go on a number of naval missions which earn him rewards. It took some getting used to, and often, the combat could be cumbersome, but I actually enjoyed myself quite a bit. These missions were never overly long, and some of them had interesting world building details.
The DLC has a lot of the same gameplay mechanisms, with the added bonus of “spirit animal powers” (see my assessment above). Basically, these are supernatural abilities that allow Connor to briefly turn invisible (wolf), fly short distances (eagle), and take down multiple enemies or smash through structures with great strength (bear). These abilities were somewhat insensitive thematically, but fun to use in terms of gameplay; I liked being able to sneak past enemies without needing to dart between bushes, and I loved flying across rooftops rather than jumping and climbing them. However, these powers also made exploring the map somewhat irrelevant - treasure chests primarily included consumables, such as arrows and rope darts, so if players find themselves preferring combat using a blade and animal power, there’s not much incentive to clear the map of points of interest. Nor is there much incentive to do side quests or challenges, as their rewards don’t add much to the gaming experience unless you use a lot of consumables.

Visuals: Assassin’s Creed 3 is a beautifully rendered game. The environments are stunning, whether they are seascapes or the wilderness on the “Frontier.” I also think the cities were well-done and eye-catching; even though buildings and streets were somewhat monotone (earthy tones), they never felt dull and little details made the design pop (things like posters/broadsides or splashes of color here and there).
Connor’s assassin outfit is also appealing in that it mashes up some 18th century fashion with accessories that denote his indigenous heritage. The red and white color palette from the Ezio games is replaced by a blue and white scheme, perhaps to show that Connor is not aligned with the British Redcoats, but even so, it still felt like an assassin uniform. I also liked the designs of Haytham’s cape, coat, and tricorne, as well as Achilles’ nod to his past through his accessories.
Animations were very fluid, and Connor’s combat maneuvers were interesting and varied. I think they were much more aesthetically pleasing than Ezio’s, and I liked how the body movements (tumbling, spinning) made them feel physical. There were some moments when awkward camera angles would obscure my vision, which cost me some kills or opportunities here and there, and there were occasionally some glitchy graphics, but they didn’t pull me out of the game the way Revelations did.

Final Verdict: Despite the plot being weakened by pacing problems and some questionable Indigenous representation, Assassin’s Creed 3 is beautifully rendered and improves on the franchise’s formulae by reimagining the Assassin-Templar conflict in a new setting.

I'm working on a Assassin's Creed III fanfiction which takes place in the 18th-century in Colonial America during the American Revolution. Do you know any source that could help me be accurate in what I write? Such as what did people use to bath themselves? Or do laundry with? Oh, and what woman did when dealing with their period and cramps?
I actually did a research post on the American Revolution some time ago. It contains a lot of resources and it actually answers some of the questions that you asked and more. But since you mention those specific questions I’ll list a couple of links that answer them.

To summarize what the links above say, basically in America’s colonial days people mostly clean themselves by hand-washing, usually just their face, hands and their intimate parts. They’ll get a pitcher and washbasin, which would be filled with water that they had heated over the fire. Sometimes they may even take a dip in a lake or river if the weather permits it.
If they could afford the luxury, they might have a wooden tub. It required a lot of work to use. It had to be lugged from the laundry house, or wherever it was stored, and filled with water which was hoisted from the well. That same water had to be warmed first over the fire before they could dump it into the tub. They may also need to repeat this step a couple of times if they wanted to fill the tub with enough water – but at the same time it could grow cold if they took too long to do so. Few would go through the effort to do this more than a couple of times a year. Those with servants may task them to do this, but again, it was a luxury and many had the belief that it cause more harm than good to be cleaned (since they believed it removed the body’s natural oils that protects them from diseases).
Of course, bathing during the winter was very rare due to the extremely cold temperatures. And often, the entire family would take turns bathing in the same tub of water. The people also made their own soap, or they would used no soap at all. Soft soaps were made of mutton fat, wood ash, and natural soda ash (also known as sodium carbonate). Often they had flowers and herb oils added for a sweet smell, but this was very expensive. Hard soaps were made of olive oil, soda ash, lime, herbs and flowers, which were mostly used for laundry and washing pots and pans. Colonists also used herbs and flowers to try to cover up body odors in their clothing.
People were quite smelly back then. Even the wealthy were smelly, but because they had larger wardrobes, it made them seem cleaner and more pleasant smelling compare to others. Working-class people rarely changed their clothes, and most lower-income people usually had one outfit for work days and one outfit for Sunday. Colonists did laundry a little more often—about once every two months. So basically, they clean their clothing (which was something that didn’t happen often because most people didn’t have enough time or clothing to frequently wash their possessions) more than they do in bathing themselves.
As for women menstruating during Colonial America it was viewed as “a necessary inconvenience, but not a shameful state, as it was seen in some other cultures. Medical texts recommended menstruating women to avoid cold food or things that might sour the stomach, such as milk, fish, or fruit. The most common words for menstruation were terms and courses.” [1]
There is little documentation for how women handled the hygienic aspects of menstruation. What we do know is that women in Colonial America would have had far fewer periods throughout their life than contemporary women. And it might be assumed that they used homemade pads from scraps of fabric, but this might not have been the case. Throughout history women simply bled into their clothing and rinsed them out daily. It was some time later that concerns grew that it may not be healthy or sanitary to bleed into one’s clothes, because it would lead to an infection (after all, many did not bathe themselves or wash their clothes that often during this time).
At some point, from the late 1800s until the 1920s, the Hoosier sanitary belt came into the picture. It was an odd belt contraption worn under women’s garments, which they could purchase washable pads for. And when it came to cramps some use potions sold by herbalist, though most were more than just colored water because they contained doses of opium.
Opium was used to treat a variety of medical conditions in Colonial America when pain management was difficult. Such as women during childbirth, because it was believed that not only would it ease the pain, but that it would also speed up the delivery. They also used herbs to treat some medical conditions as well, such as Tansy tea which was made from the leaves, fresh or dried, and was given for cramps, colic, gout, and even the plague. Though, in the Colonies, practically every farmyard had a clump of this plant growing for other uses. Such as picking the leaves before the plant bloomed so that it can be used to dye their wool a clear yellow.
Alcohol even played a significant role in the daily lives of the Colonists. In the days before an understanding of bacteria and purification, they believed water was unhealthy since it often made them sick. Alcohol was a safer choice and, by the eighteenth century, distilled spirits were cheap and widely available. It was such a normal part of society that it was served at almost every meal and social occasion, even at work.
They also had the belief that alcohol was nourishing and contain medicinal properties (and that it was good for warming them in a cold climate). They called their whiskey the “Good Creature of God”, which gave them the strength needed to dull the pain of the brutal manual labor of making a home in the wilderness. Even women who were in labor were traditionally given a shot to ease their discomfort. It’s possible that some women tended to drink alcohol to alleviate their cramps too. [2] [3]
It was only later in the 19th and 20th centuries that Benjamin Rush’s (a physician who practiced in Philadelphia in the late 1700s) theory became more accepted by his peers. His theory being that alcohol addiction is not a matter of will, but a disease that can only be treated by avoiding alcohol altogether. [4] [5]

Historical Games to Play on the Nintendo Switch
Nintendo’s latest console is becoming one of the best-selling and widely loved consoles ever, and it’s easy to see why. Its hybrid nature and emphasis on local multiplayer have attracted millions of gamers, with a massive player base and a huge selection of great titles. And among these titles, there are plenty that have strong roots in world history.
If you happen to be a gamer that shares a strong love for history and Nintendo consoles, then these Switch games might be perfect for you.
Sid Meier’s Civilization VI

This classic franchise finally comes to a Nintendo console with the release of Civilization VI for the Nintendo Switch. The port delivers the same excellent gameplay that the series has long been known for, where the player must develop their own civilization from an early settlement and slowly grow it over hundreds and thousands of years to become a world power. Players will conquer the globe through many different victory conditions, including military domination, technological superiority, and more.
Civilization VI’s gameplay is incredibly deep, with the potential to steal hundreds of hours away from players with addictive and fun turn-based gameplay mechanics. The game features historical societies and cultures from all around the world and can make for some very well-rounded historical education for players that have a deep love for world history. It’s truly one of the best historical games out there and can be found for quite cheap on the Nintendo Switch.
Assassin’s Creed III

First released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Assassin’s Creed III is now available to be played on the Nintendo Switch console. The game features gameplay nearly identical to previous entries but has the unique setting of the American Revolutionary War. One of the more interesting parts of the game is the inclusion of various historical figures from the time era, such as Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson.
While not completely historically accurate, the game is an exciting Assassin’s Creed title that allows the player to immerse themselves within American history and the role the Brotherhood played in the birth of a nation.
Ancestors Legacy

Ancestors Legacy features squad-based real-time strategy gameplay, with a strong focus on tactics. The game is set within medieval Europe and features four playable nations, including Viking, Anglo-Saxon, German, and Slav. Ancestors Legacy’s story and gameplay are heavily inspired by real historical events, with gameplay consisting of raiding, conquering, and pillaging enemy camps, villages, and towns.
This game runs on Unreal Engine 4, and as a result, looks absolutely stunning - even on the Nintendo Switch. Everything from the game’s environments to the character models oozes detail, and the game’s cinematic camera only adds to the game’s excellent presentation. Ancestors Legacy is one game that should not be missed for any fans of real-time strategy gameplay and medieval history.
Through the Darkest of Times

Set during the rise of Adolf Hitler in 1933’s Berlin, Through the Darkest of Times tasks the player with leading a small resistance group during one of the darkest periods of world history. With a group made up of ordinary people and limited supplies, you must attempt to gather information, recruit new followers, and make strategic strikes against the Nazi regime, all while attempting to remain hidden. The title features strategy management gameplay, with an emotional yet dark story that perfectly depicts the life of those who lived during the period of Hitler’s reign.
Through the Darkest of Times is perhaps one of the most interesting historical titles to make its way onto Nintendo’s hybrid console this year, with everything from the game’s story to its colorless and somber visuals that perfectly capture the dark time period that it is set during. The game has also gone on to receive multiple game awards, with it even receiving a nomination in the Games for Impact category for The Game Awards 2020.
Commandos 2 HD Remaster

Fans of real-time strategy and World War II may remember Commandos 2, which was originally released in 2001 for PC (and the following year for Xbox and PlayStation 2). Through the game, players control a squad of commandos that they must use strategically to take out enemy soldiers in stealth-like gameplay. Each commando has their own unique set of skills and must be used smartly to successfully complete each mission.
Taking place during World War II between 1941 and 1944, Commandos 2 is arguably one of the most popular and influential real-time strategy titles and is finally making its way to modern consoles. Commandos 2 HD Remaster is the newest game to come to the Switch on this list, with a scheduled release date of December 4, 2020.
Warplanes: WW2 Dogfight

Another title set during World War II, Warplanes: WW2 Dogfight sets itself apart from other historical games by focusing primarily on air-based combat. With over fifty different planes available, players can customize and upgrade them to their personal specifications. The game also offers multiple campaigns, where the player can assume the role of pilot and squadron leader for the USA, Great Britain, USSR, Germany, and Japan. Fighting through varied missions, players will need to accomplish tasks such as face off against enemy aircraft, protect ground structures from bombers, fight overseas, pilot bombers, and more.
The game is also only $9.99 on the Nintendo Switch, making it the cheapest game on this list. Big fans of World War II history or piloting sims should definitely take a look at Warplanes: WW2 Dogfight.
For those who are constantly on the go but love gaming, these are just some of the many great historical games that can be played on the Nintendo Switch.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue - The Novel - Chapter 14
30th July 1757
The next time the Morrigan pulled into port we bid farewell to La Vérendrye. We also received word that Hope wanted to meet us in Albany. The message did not say why, but Liam seemed optimistic that Hope would have word of James Wardrop for us. We heard also of a political conference that was due to be held at Albany in a few days’ time. I regret that I did not pay much attention to such things at the time, but looking back on it now, I can say that it was a gathering of some significance that signalled the beginnings of the war with the French in which we I now find myself embroiled.
Liam and I did not care about such things however, or waste any time discussing them. As far as we were both concerned the only tasks of any importance that might be waiting for us in Albany was the assassination of James Wardrop, and the recovery of the Precursor manuscript.
And of course, as we approached Albany, Liam made sure that he did everything within his power to convince me that James Wardrop was an absolute monster. He told me of the native tribes that James Wardrop had forced off their land, as though every man of standing in the colonies has not, in their own small way, been guilty of the same thing. He told me also of the laws that James Wardrop bent to suit his own needs, Liam’s old hatred of politicians still as strong as it had ever been. We were not even sure that I would need to kill James Wardrop, or that he would be at the conference, but Liam was not taking any chances.
I listened to every word that he said to me, and I tried to believe in them, and in my friend. I was sure that he was telling the truth, and yet I could not shake the feeling that killing James Wardrop would probably feel just as distasteful and unnecessary to me as killing both Washington and Smith had.
When we pulled into port I saw to the needs of the Morrigan and her men while Liam ran off to find Hope. I took my time, wanting to give Liam and Hope as much time alone together as they needed. It had been a few months since they had last seen one another after all. At least, I told myself that was why I stayed with the Morrigan. In truth I was not looking forward at all to potentially having to kill another Templar.
Eventually I ran out of excuses to stay with the Morrigan and her crew, and headed off in search of my friends. They had clearly been talking for a while when I arrived, and Hope was so enraptured with whatever it was that Liam had been saying that she did not notice my arrival, and I accidentally startled her when I placed a hand on her shoulder in greeting.
“You’re here,” she said, sounding rather more surprised than I would have expected of an Assassin. We were always supposed to be alert and aware of our surroundings after all.
“The Congress is still in session,” she continued. “George Washington and his militia have fired on French troops under Jumonville. The French are calling it an act of war.”
At the time I did not know how important that first act of war would turn out to be. All I could think of was the name Hope had mentioned; George Washington. I had known Lawrence’s brother was a high-ranking member of the military, and it seems as though his importance in such matters is only increasing these days, but at the time all I could picture was the concerned face of a young man as he watched his elder brother slowly fading away thanks to the illness that ate at him.
“You mean Lawrence’s younger brother?” I asked Hope, barely able to believe it.
“Yes, it’s the same,” Hope confirmed. “Speaking of Lawrence Washington, since you eliminated him, James Wardrop has moved up the ranks. All the Templar resources are at his disposal now.”
So my target had become one of even more significance than before. I was under no delusions. It was not as though I was going after the Grandmaster himself. No, by all reports the Colonial Grandmaster had not been seen in the colonies for months at that stage, and Lawrence Washington and James Wardrop were only leading in his absence, and were, of course, in charge of the operation involving the Precursor box and manuscript.
“What about the manuscript?” I asked Hope.
“My sources in New York confirm that Wardrop has it,” Hope replied. “I also learned that he is here, at the congress, under heavy guard.”
Liam’s guess had proved correct. He would undoubtedly view the news as good, although I was probably not as excited by Hope’s revelation as I was expected to be.
Liam had remained silent while Hope and I talked, but at that moment he turned to me.
“Shay, find Wardrop,” Liam told me. “Get that manuscript.”
No matter how I looked at it, Liam’s words were nothing more or less than an order. My friend had dismissed me. It stung, but I nodded nevertheless and made to leave.
“This place is thick with Templar troops,” Hope added before I could leave. “Liam and I will make sure Wardrop doesn’t escape.”
I was sure that the two of them wanted to spend as much time alone together as they could. Since the outbreak of typhoid fever in the homestead Liam and Hope had been closer than ever. It felt as though the two of them had dismissed me all too easily, but I could hardly begrudge my friends wanting to spend a little bit of time alone without me. Or at least, I tried not to begrudge them this, but I was all too aware of the fact that I was growing slightly jealous of the both of them, and of their bond.
I took my time as I wandered around Albany. It was easy enough to find my way to the buildings in which the congress was taking place. It seemed as though nearly every person in the colony was interested in the political meeting in one fashion or another.
I soon found a rather large gathering of people. They were all watching a man on a raised platform in front of them as he orated rather passionately. He was trying to convince his audience of the importance of the colonies joining together to create one government, and doing a remarkably good job of it. Even though I was in the crowd for a reason other than the man’s speech, I found myself taken in by his words.
At the time I was aware of the speaker only by reputation, but before long I would come to know him rather a lot better. His name was Benjamin Franklin, and he had a way of speaking that made you want to listen. From the time I have spent with him I can also report that he is a friendly, intelligent individual, although not, perhaps, as observant as you might expect of such an academically minded man.
As I stood there amongst the crowd, enraptured by Benjamin Franklin’s words, I spotted one of James Wardrop’s allies. William Johnson, another high-ranking Templar, was also in the crowd, and appeared to be just as absorbed by Franklin’s speech as anyone there.
When Franklin had finished Johnson applauded the loudest, and immediately moved towards the podium to greet Franklin as he stepped down. I kept a close eye on Johnson, thinking that he might eventually lead me to James Wardrop, or that he himself might actually be in possession of the manuscript or know where to find it.
“A rousing speech, Mister Franklin,” Johnson commented as he fell into step alongside Benjamin Franklin. “But do you truly believe Great Britain will grant her colonies autonomy?”
The two began to walk off together and I followed them, careful to stay far enough back that they would not spot me. As they walked they continued to discuss Master Franklin’s speech for a short while, before Johnson swiftly changed the subject.
“Let us leave politics for another day,” Johnson said. “I wanted to thank you for your research.”
This peaked my interest. What sort of research could Benjamin Franklin possibly be doing for the Templars? The answer seemed obvious to me at once. Benjamin Franklin had been assisting them either with translating the manuscript or with trying to work out the secrets of the box.
I continued to follow along after them, hoping that I would hear more. They did not make it easy for me. Templar presence around the congress was a lot heavier than that of my Assassin brethren. It appeared that the other side paid a lot more attention to politics than Achilles’ brotherhood did.
“Of course,” Benjamin Franklin said, somehow making even those two simple words sound so passionate and genuine.
And here I must take a moment to address whoever it is that may be reading this; if you have not had the good fortune to converse with Master Franklin I highly recommend seeking him out or at least finding an opportunity to watch him speak. The man is a brilliant orator, in possession of a magnificent mind, and quick to make friends.
But I should return to my tale.
“In the brief time I could examine that box,” Franklin said, and by this stage I was sure that I had stumbled across something grand, and actually growing quite excited, “I could tell that it was something unique. From Ancient Egypt you said?”
Master Johnson nodded in response to this.
“Well,” Franklin continued, “as I mentioned in my letter, I am quite ready to electrify it.”
At this stage I had no idea of Master Franklin’s experiments, and no idea what it was that he might be talking about. All I knew was that Master Franklin suddenly seemed a lot more excited about their topic of conversation, and eager to proceed with whatever it is he and Johnson had arranged.
“Excellent,” Johnson replied, looking just as pleased. “We will have the box delivered shortly. As for the manuscript…”
Master Johnson paused and gestured to a nearby British officer who had been standing close by for the latter part of the conversation.
“Captain!” Johnson called, and the man came scurrying over.
He hung his head, and looked rather nervous as he approached the high-ranking Templar.
“I apologise sir,” the British officer began, “but Master Wardrop refused to hand it over. He said the risks were too great.”
I frowned. Apparently Wardrop at least had anticipated that we might be coming for him and the manuscript.
“The risks?” Johnson exclaimed, before letting out a cry of frustration. He shook his head and then turned to Benjamin Franklin once more.
“I apologise,” he told Master Franklin. “You will have the manuscript and the box in the briefest of delays.”
Master Franklin nodded politely in return and began to walk off, but before he left he fixed the officer who had delivered the bad news with a less than friendly glare. Clearly he had been looking forward to getting his hands on the manuscript.
As soon as Franklin was out of earshot, Johnson turned his attention to the officer once more and offloaded all of his anger and frustration on the poor man.
“You mangy excuse for a uniform!” he hissed, leaning in close as he did. “Run to Fort Frederick and tell Master Wardrop he had better cough up the manuscript post haste, else I will have him scalped!”
The officer nodded and then ran off as fast as his legs could carry him. I followed him, knowing that ideally I would be able to stop the man before he reached Wardrop and took the manuscript. I sprinted and jumped across the rooftops, until I found the perfect spot and pounced on the poor man, my blade sinking deep into his neck.
I now knew where to find Wardrop, and Fort Frederick stood almost directly in front of me. I had stopped the messenger just in time. Any closer to the fort and my kill would surely have been spotted by the men stationed there.
With the messenger out of the way I turned my attention to the fort itself. Both Johnson and the manuscript lay somewhere inside. Fort Frederick was not particularly large, and was old enough that the wall had begun to crumble in places, the broken and uneven stonework making for an easy climb.
I scaled the walls easily, but as soon as I was inside it was a different matter. Fort Frederick was not large, playing host to only a few dozen troops at the time, but nevertheless a couple of them spotted me as soon as I stepped foot on the rampart.
I dispatched them as quickly and quietly as I could, before looking around for my target. I soon spied James Wardrop speaking to a nearby soldier and slowly approached.
Whether my fight with the soldiers had alerted him, or whether it was my slinking towards him, James Wardrop immediately looked up, his eyes fixing on mine. All was still for a couple of moments, and then the man began to run.
There was nowhere for him to go though. I stood between James Wardrop and the entrance of the fortress’s doors. I ran after him along the wall of the fortress, and leaped down on top of him, plunging my blade into his chest, just as I had done with Samuel Smith. I hoped that this time my target would die quickly, or that he might give me some reason to not immediately regret his death.
The man was still holding the manuscript in his hands, and I grabbed it from him before he had even finished falling to the ground, not wanting to get the precious book covered in Wardrop’s blood.
“No!” he cried out, trying to reach for myself and the manuscript, despite the blood that was flowing out from the wound in his chest and staining his clothes.
We had settled into that strange place between life and death again. He did not have long to live; seconds only; and yet he fought just as hard to reclaim the artefact as Samuel Smith had with the box.
“You have no idea what you’re doing fool!” James Wardrop spat at me.
“I’m keeping the people free from your control,” I told Wardrop as I tucked the manuscript into my coat. That was at least what Liam had tried to convince me I was doing.
“How free will you be when the French undermine these squabbling colonies?” Wardrop argued.
“These colonies would be far better off without the Templars pulling the strings,” I spat back, trying to pretend that he didn’t have a point. The French or the Templars; from my point of view they both seemed just as bad as one another, and just as nebulous and distant an enemy.
James Wardrop could not have had much life left in him, and yet he used his dying moments, his very last bits of strength, to continue arguing with me.
“We bring order from chaos,” he declared. “If everything is permitted, no-one is safe.”
I tried to pretend that the words had not gotten to me. I tried to pretend that they had not made more sense to me than everything that Liam had been saying to me of late. It did not work, and in my anger I leaned down to glare at James Wardrop.
“Even the devil can quote scripture to suit his own purposes,” I hissed at him, but the quote was lost on him.
James Wardrop was already dead.
And so there you have it. The truth. I was responsible for…
No, that is putting it too mildly. Best to say it straight, without any mucking around. I killed Lawrence Washington, Samuel Smith and James Wardrop. I have no doubt that if I was given enough time with them I would come to realise that they were all excellent men in their own right, and did not deserve to die, by my hand or by any other.
Alas, my tale is far from over, and there are more important events that I must still recall; ones that weigh on my conscience even more than the deaths of Washington, Smith and Wardrop.
