The Adventures/New Adventures of Batman (The successor to Batman '66 and precursor to Superfriends)
[All images are owned by DC Comics and Filmation. I promise I'm too poor to sue]
I had previously mentioned that The New Scooby Doo Movies was the Hanna-Barbera debut of Batman and Robin prior to the debut of Superfriends. However, there were two animated series starring the Caped Crusader prior to Crisis, both produced by Filmation.
youtube
(Thanks to Near Mint Fanboys)
Following the cancellation of Batman, National Publications (soon to be known as DC Comics) wanted to keep the Caped Crusader on the kids' minds (sales of the comic soared during the TV series, after all), so green lit an animated series based on the Dynamic Duo
What's more, this marked the first time Olan Soule and Casey Kasem as the voices of Batman and Robin. They would reprise the roles both for the Scooby Doo crossover and Superfriends (Kasem would continue as Robin for The Super Powers Team, while Soule would be replaced by Adam West), and if the narrator sounds familiar, it'd because he's Ted Knight, who also narrated the first season of Superfriends.
Tumblr media
Of course we have Batman and Robin (their animation a bit simplistic compared to how they'd look a few years later), and it's weird seeing Soule's Batman getting his hands dirty (though you never actually see Batman or Robin actually hit anyone; they just throw a punch at the camera and then another shot of their dance partner flying backward)
But the Caped Crusaders aren't alone in their Never Ending Battle...
Tumblr media
Of course Batman has the ever-dependable Alfred
Tumblr media
Additionally, Batgirl joins the Masked Manhunters in animation.
Tumblr media
Additionally, we have a rather young-looking Commissioner Gordon.
In addition, all of Batman's villains join him in animation to cause havoc in Gotham City, but I mainly want to discuss the Joker...
Tumblr media
In the comics and in the Adam West series, the Joker's hair was turned green (a result of the chemical bath he took that started his career). However, the producers thought it looked "too unnatural", instead making the Joker's hair black with a streak of green that looked TOTALLY natural!
The series was paired with a Superman series, each half an hour long and airing two adventures.
In 1977, in the middle of Superfriends' run, Filmation ran a second Batman series...
youtube
(Thanks to BATMAN ON FILM)
Yes, those are Adam West and Burt Ward reprising their iconic roles in voice form.
In addition...
Tumblr media
Batgirl once again joins the Dynamic Duo to make a Terrific Trio
Tumblr media
And joining the team is Bat Mite, a visitor from the 5th Dimension (the same one Myxlplyx is from), and much like Myxlplyx he has "magic" powers that can warp reality. In the comics, Bat Mite wants to see his hero in action so amps up the difficulty, but in the series, he seems to want to help, but is as successful with his powers as Orko is with his magic (maybe Orko's from the same dimension? He definitely used the same voice actor!)
Tumblr media
Additionally, Commissioner Gordon looks a lot more like comic fans would expect.
Now, let's talk about the villains. They're all here again (and Joker still has that weird green highlight) with one exception: The rights to the Riddler were given to Hanna-Barbera for Challenge of the Superfriends, so he doesn't appear (despite being in the opening credits).
Tumblr media
A pity, because I was hoping he'd explain why he changed the color of his outfit from green to red.
And this being Filmation, there has to be a moral at the end of the episode.
Like most Saturday morning fare, both series lasted only one season. If you would like to see an episode of either reviewed, let me know!

Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy history
Okay so.
Harley and Ivy’s relationship first started in Batman: The Animated Series and its followup The New Batman Adventures. The main episodes featuring them together are:
Harley and Ivy
Tumblr media
Holiday Knights
Tumblr media
Girls Night Out
Tumblr media
There was also a webseries called Gotham Girls that features them a lot. There are some low quality videos of it on Youtube. And then they were also in one episode of Static Shock, called "Hard as Nails". And finally the Batman and Harley Quinn movie which was.. not great.
Then there are the comics that tie-in to the animated universe:
The Batman Adventures #12 (Sep 1993) - Harley Quinn's first comic appearance, in which they colored her mask wrong
Tumblr media
The Batman Adventures Holiday Special #1 (Jan 1995) - the episode Holiday Knights was based on this comic
The Batman & Robin Adventures #8 (Jul 1996)
The Batgirl Adventures #1 (Feb 1998) - this is an important one
Batman: Gotham Adventures #10 (Mar 1999)
Batman: Gotham Adventures #29 (Oct 2000)
Gotham Girls (2003-2003) - miniseries
Batman Adventures #1 (Jun 2003) - start of an ongoing storyline
Batman Adventures #3 (Aug 2003)
Batman Adventures #16 (Sep 2004)
Batman: Harley & Ivy (2004) - miniseries
Tumblr media
Batman and Harley Quinn (2017-2018) - miniseries
After Harley Quinn was successful in the animated series, they ported her over to the main comic universe, and that included her relationship with Poison Ivy. Some of their more notable appearances together are:
Batman: Harley Quinn (Oct 1999)
Arkham Asylum: Madness (2000)
Joker/Mask (2000) - crossover miniseries
Harley Quinn (2000-2004) - series, Poison Ivy is in it up until issue 19
Batman: Gotham Knights #14 (Apr 2001) - backup story
Harley and Ivy: Love on the Lam (2001)
Gotham City Sirens (2009-2011) - series
Tumblr media
Batman: Black and White #3 (Jan 2014) - the story "Role Models"
Harley Quinn (2014-ongoing) - series, Poison Ivy is a recurring secondary character
Batman #42-#43 (2018) - the "Everyone Loves Ivy" story arc, leading into Heroes in Crisis
Heroes in Crisis (2018-2019) - miniseries
Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy (2019-ongoing) - miniseries, spinoff from Heroes in Crisis
Tumblr media
Harley and Ivy also show up in alternate universes like Injustice and DC Comics Bombshells. Both of those have ensemble casts and it can be a long time between appearances.
This isn't everything but I'm pretty sure it's all the important things.

Reviewed by: Eric Joseph
Summary
The Clown Princess of Crime finally brings her cult favorite headlining act to home video, thereby allowing the public at large to experience this mature-rated DC Universe original animated series for themselves. Although it’s inherently not for younger viewers, Harley Quinn should no doubt prove to be a hit with those who don’t mind irreverent comic book-based adventures chock full of F-bombs.
Basically, we join our gal around the time she and Joker go their separate ways. Not being one to go quietly into the night, Harley sets her sights on Legion of Doom membership in an attempt to one-up her ex-boyfriend with two middle fingers raised high. There’s a lot of other stuff going on, obviously, but it’s best you experience the specifics for yourself.
Positives
In truth, I actually may have enjoyed this inaugural season even more on my second time around. Having already seen all thirteen episodes prior to home video release, I knew what to expect in full. But going in already initiated increased my ability to enjoy this show’s take on the DC Universe.
To be more specific in that regard, you can’t look at this series as a comedy alone – you have to accept that many characters are amped-up caricatures of their usual selves. Imagine if LEGO Batman movies were R-rated and you would have a decent parallel.
Despite my original desire to see Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner’s comic book run adapted – and the supporting cast that came with – I grew to enjoy the folks offered up here. Sure, Big Tony, Red Tool and the gang may be missing, but you’ll likewise fall in love with fresh interpretations of Poison Ivy, King Shark, Dr. Psycho and Clayface. Sy Borgman is really the only one who carried over from the Palmiotti-Conner material.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
As you could imagine, voice acting is Grade-A from the top down. Kaley Cuoco handily leads the charge with her exuberant take on Harley, but I can’t help continuing complimenting Alan Tudyk’s work. Even though he brings it as the Joker, it’s his Clayface that gets me every time. Really, that over-the-top thespian is highly quotable, and I’ve come to love him just as much as the headliner.
The overall story arc likewise fits the intended tone. In other words, don’t expect world-ending stakes like you would with Justice League Unlimited, nor should you anticipate any noir-ish mysteries as you would from a Batman show. Instead, the crew takes us on some wacky capers, as its matriarch embarks on an unavoidable collision course with the Ace of Knaves himself.
Negatives
If there’s any “negative” to call out, it’s that this DVD set has no real bonus features of which to speak (and yes, it’s available only on DVD for the time being). Granted, there are trailers to be accessed from the menu on Disc One, but those don’t count as bonus content. I really wish a featurette or two showing the cast and crew providing insight into the production were on hand but no dice.
As for the content itself, I’m still getting used to how Jim Gordon and Robin/Damian Wayne are portrayed. I know, I did say to expect parody-level depictions earlier, but those happen to be the two in particular that veered a little too far off, at least in my view. Regardless, they’re hardly deal-breakers.
Verdict
If you fancy yourself a fan of Harley Quinn in any capacity and you’re at least old enough to remember what a Playstation 2 is, then you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of The Complete First Season. This show is a hell of a lot of fun and raw enough for my standards. Let’s just hope that some featurettes are included when the second season inevitably hits shelves.

BW's Daily Article Link: Writing Comedy Is Hard
You may have heard the expression “drama is easy, comedy is hard”. There is truth to that…and yet I try to make a comedic comic strip. Sometimes I wonder how bad I want to challenge myself versus how much I hate myself. At any rate, author Lindsay Woodward gives some advice to people wanting to write a comedic story through her own experiences.

Hiya @daiskken!
As to watching movies with bad special effects? Sure. You don't need a big budget to entertain me. I'm not a fan of horror flicks especially hack and slash, but low budget movies? I'm always game!
So some recent horror movie experiences?
I would not consciously seek out and watch such a movie. . . though I would also not go out of my way to not be present when friends and family are enjoying such a flick. Actually DDBot and I watched the original 'IT' about 2 months ago. Um, but I fell asleep before the end, so. . .
DDBot and I recently watched the new 'IT' and 'IT 2' at her behest. I fell asleep for 'IT 2' and she turned it off so we could finish it a couple of nights later because she knows I'm a total fangirl for James McAvoy and would want to finish it out.
I am super interested in seeing the Quiet Place. This might be because of my mild obsessions with Emily Blunt and John Krasinski. But I also think the premise is amazing.
Some Horror Movies I have enjoyed (or at least watched more than once. . . ) at some point in my life
Night of the Living Dead
Creature from the Black Lagoon
Sweeney Todd (SonBot says this isn't horror. . . which is unfortunate, because I thought it was my favorite horror movie :) )
Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog
The Fly
Tremors (and it's predecessors)
American Werewolf in Paris
Gremlins
The Blair Witch Project
And for some low budget flicks (and high budget but still crappy effects) movies that I enjoyed far too much at some part of my life?
The Princess Bride
the Conan movies
Rocky Horror Picture Show (I've enjoyed this whole experience several times)
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Total Recall
Batman & Robin
Joe VS The Volcano
2001: A Space Odyssey
Dark Crystal
Pretty much anything Monty Python
Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension
Oh, there are so many more. . .

Young Justice: A Bat Family And The House Of Al Ghul
Tumblr media
Warning, Spoilers Ahead…
Seriously, turn away if you aren’t up to date with Young Justice: Outsiders – particularly episode 6.
You have been warned…
The current Young Justice season has shown the following members of the Bat-Family:
Batman (Bruce Wayne)
Nightwing (Dick Grayson)
Oracle (Barbara Gordon)
Robin (Tim Drake)
Spoiler (Stephanie Brown)
Batwoman (Kate Kane)
Jason Todd
Damian Wayne
The House of Al Ghul has the following representation:
Ra’s Al Ghul
Talia
Sensei
Damian Wayne
“Rescue Op”, the latest episode of Young Justice: Outsiders, dropped a few bombshells on the Wayne Family and the League of Shadows. Now is a perfect time for a recap and speculation post.
Batman: Has grown tired of the limitations imposed on the Justice League by the United Nations and Lex Luthor in particular. Bruce resigned from the League and formed Batman Inc. Green Arrow, Batwoman, Katana, Hardware, and Plastic Man have also resigned from the League and joined Batman Inc. Robin, Spoiler, and Arrowette resigned from Young Justice in support of their mentors.
We haven’t seen Batman since the mass resignation so we are unaware of his future plans.
Batwoman: Has made one brief non-speaking appearance. I’m assuming Kate’s origin is similar to her comic book version. She should re-appear when Batman returns on the scene.
Nightwing: Left Young Justice at the end of season two. The death of Wally West, his best friend, laid a heavy burden on his shoulders. We have no idea what Dick has been up to during the two-year time gap between season two and three. The use of hypnos in an early episode hints as adventures with Spyral, a spy organization.
The season opened with Dick breaking up meta-human trafficking rings.  He’s in a relationship with Barbara Gordon.  It appears Dick will/has formed the Outsiders as of the latest episode – Brion and Halo stated they’d work best “outside” the Young Justice team.
Oracle: Has been paralyzed for less than a year. The prequel comic had Babs active as Batgirl in year six. We aren’t aware of the circumstances of her paralysis but it’s most likely due to the Joker. The only question is if we will receive a “Killing Joke” flashback or if it’s only referenced in a comment. Babs is strictly working with Nightwing at this point but will she organize the Birds of Prey in the future? I would love to see Huntress and Lady Blackhawk in the YJ-verse!
Dick and Babs were both aware of Bruce’s “Batman Inc” plan but are not actively participating in it.
Robin: We’re not sure when Tim became Robin. I’ve always felt it was shortly before season two started due to the anxious protectiveness Dick had of Tim in the first episode. Tim should be around 16-17 years old in the current season. He resigned along with Batman in the first episode. Tim’s romance with Wonder Girl is on the rocks due to the resignation.
Spoiler (Stephanie Brown) – Like Kate, she has only been featured in a non-speaking role. Steph was part of the mass resignation of episode one. I’m assuming Steph’s origin is true to her comic book roots: daughter of Cluemaster, adopts the Spoiler identity to foil his crimes. A significant difference is her early adoption into the Bat family. Trust me, Steph wouldn’t have been able to join the team without Batman’s approval. Steph’s resignation suggests she has a much smoother relationship with Bruce in the YJ-verse. Another difference – Steph isn’t romantically involved with Tim. Is Cassie doomed to be the “Ariana” of Tim and Steph’s future romance? Or will Tim and Steph simply be BFFs?
Finally, Jason Todd!
Jason was seen briefly in season two as a memorial hologram. He had died sometime during years two and four of Young Justice.  We’re not sure of the exact time or circumstances.
I would set Jason’s death in year four. Dick would be approximately 17 years old during the fourth year of the team. Dick, traditionally, is around 17 to 19 years old when he breaks off from Bruce and forms the Nightwing identity. Jason would have a brief tenure as Robin and a member of Young Justice before his death- allowing a very new to the role Tim to join the team in year 5.
We’ve never been told the circumstances of Jason’s death. It’s a safe bet the Joker was involved in some way.
Let’s recap the various versions:
Post-Crisis: Jason searches to find his birth mother. Sheila Haywood, said birth mother, betrays Jason to the Joker. The Joker beats Jason with a crowbar and leaves him to die in an exploding warehouse.
New 52: Very similar to the Post-Crisis death.
Under The Red Hood movie: Similar to the traditional death minus the mom.
Batman: Arkham Knight: The Joker kidnapped, imprisoned, and tortured Jason for many months. Joker appeared to murder Jason in a video, causing Bruce to stop searching for him.
Now let’s discuss the various resurrections…
Post-Crisis: Superboy Prime punched the walls of reality causing alterations of the timeline. One alteration was Jason’s resurrection. A massively brain-damaged and physically injured Jason awoke in his coffin. He dug himself out of his grave and wandered the streets of Gotham in a semi-catonic state. Talia discovers Jason and brings him to the League of Assassins. Jason has muscle memory but no intellectual capabilities. In other words, Jason can fight but not communicate. After months of no progress, Ra’s orders Jason to be sent to a home. Ra’s orders Jason will be taken care of out of respect for the Detective. A desperate Talia throws Jason into the Lazarus Pit. Jason emerges with full mental capabilities but an insane amount of rage. Talia furthers Jason’s training but also amps Jason’s rage – she sends him like an exploding bomb into Gotham. Prime targets: Bruce, the Joker, and Tim. Jason and Talia have a brief, icky, sexual relationship.
New 52: No Superboy involved – Talia straight up throws Jason into the Lazaurs Pit. She still serves as Jason’s mentor but no sex was involved.  Jason’s return as the Red Hood and his roaring rampage of revenge happened before the New 52 began. We never receive the full details of Jason’s revenge but Jason comments about his rough treatment of Tim and Roy jokes about a “duffel bag of severed heads” so we’ll assume it was similar to the ‘Under The Red Hood” arc.
Under The Red Hood movie: Ra’s resurrects Jason due to his guilt over unleashing the Joker. Jason’s death was never intended and Ra’s resurrected him to make amends. Unfortunately, Ra’s couldn’t contain Jason’s rage and banished him from the stronghold.
Batman: Arkham Knight: Never died but still full of rage and bitterness due to Batman’s “abandonment” of him.
Jason is seen briefly in “Rescue Op”. He’s masked and wearing a red hood. He fights Nightwing. After Dick’s team leaves, he mutters “Grayson”.
Ra’s comments: “Oh, your memory is finally returning. Excellent.”
Let’s speculate:
We can safely assume Jason died at the hands of the Joker. It’s a universal constant. I feel it was a true death as the “faked” death of Arkham Knight doesn’t work well in universe with a Superman and a Martian Manhunter. If Batman didn’t have Jason’s actual corpse in his arms, he would have called in his entire Justice League team to find his son. And if he didn’t, Dick would have.
More questions: Was Dick in space when Jason died? Did Dick and Jason work together in Young Justice? Did the brothers have a better bond in the Young Justice universe or was it the more typical “overshadowed by Dick’s greatness” combined with Dick’s bitterness over being replaced route?
As for Jason’s resurrection…
We can rule out Superboy Prime and timeline alterations.
The Lazarus Pit is the obvious solution. However, Jason is very much in his post-grave but pre-Lazarus dip state.  Has Jason been immersed in the Pit? If not, what caused his resurrection?
If Jason has been immersed in the Pit, why such a half-assed job? And where’s the rage?
The Young Justice comic book had Robin (Dick) accidentally drop Ra’s – causing the man to fall to his death. Talia and Ubu threw Ra’s into the pit and he emerged fully intact with no memory loss.
If Jason still has memory loss after the Lazarus pit – is it due to the massive head trauma caused by the Joker’s crowbar?  But, again, Ra’s had died in the Young Justice-verse and been resurrected in prime condition. Talia and Ubu had to travel back to the Lazarus Pit – meaning Ra’s was dead for hours – that would also cause brain damage and he came back in perfect health.
My theory is an outside force caused Jason’s resurrection. Talia discovered Jason wondering the streets and brought him back to the League’s stronghold.
It would explain Jason’s current state. I have no idea what the “outside force” would be though.
Jason has been healing and training with the League but has not been immersed in the Pit.
Ra’s al Ghul stated in “Recue Op” that he is no longer the head of the League of Shadows or a member of the Light.
A power struggle occurred and Ra’s lost.  Ra’s only has his own family – Talia, Damian, and Sensei – along with a few loyal operatives on the island. Who has assumed control of the League of Shadows?
I listed a few suspects when I covered “Rescue Op” – Cheshire and Lady Shiva. I even theorized over the introduction of Cassandra Cain. I completely forgot the most obvious suspect – Nyssa al Ghul.
Nyssa is the older sister of Talia. Nyssa lost most of her family in concentration camps during World War II – mainly because of Ra’s outright refusal to help her.
“Batman: Death and the Maidens” is Nyssa’s origin and revenge against Ra’s. She murders Ra’s al Ghul and Talia and assumes control of the League.
The trio of Nyssa, Lady Shiva, and Cheshire would be a terrifying triple threat. And if Shiva has coerced Cassandra to help? Very bad times ahead for Ra’s and Talia.
Let’s talk Talia. She only has a brief appearance in the cartoon but received a two-issue spotlight in the comic book series.
Talia is a more multi-faceted and likable character in the Young Justice-verse than she is in the mainstream DC universe.
Talia wants Bruce to love her but realizes he doesn’t/can’t – at least not the way she wants him to. She’s frustrated that her father doesn’t understand or accept this. She wants someone to see her as something other than Ra’s al Ghul’s daughter or Batman’s lover. Talia is very tired of the endless conflict between Batman and her father.
I believe Talia discovered the resurrected Jason. She brought Jason home with her so he could heal. Talia has been patiently waiting for Jason’s full recovery. In the comics, Talia didn’t push Jason into the Pit until Ra’s threatened to send Jason away. Clearly, this isn’t a worry in the YJ-verse so Talia would have no reason to immerse Jason in the Pit and risk the resulting insanity/rage.
Initially, Talia rescued Jason in the comics so Bruce would be grateful to her. Cartoon-verse Talia likely has a similar motivation.
What would cause Talia to throw Jason into the Pit – restoring his full mental capacity even at the risk of rage and insanity?
Two words: Damian Wayne.
Talia was holding baby Damian in her arms during the episode. Why introduce both Jason and Damian together unless their storylines intertwine?
I feel Ra’s successors in the League are going to pursue the remaining Al Ghuls. The League, by its various nature, is a bloodthirsty affair – predecessors aren’t allowed to live out their lives in peace. And Ra’s isn’t a “chilling on the beach” type of guy.
Damian is a newborn and I’m assuming he was conceived the old-fashioned way. None of this Talia drugged Bruce or stole his genetic material stuff. It wouldn’t be true to the Young Justice version of Talia.
Talia has a newborn and a price on all the Al-Ghul heads. Talia realizes Damian needs to be with his father for his own safety. Talia is unable – or unwilling – to leave Ra’s side. It’s possible an ambush goes very badly. A desperate Talia throws Jason into the Lazarus Pit. She orders the now fully restored Jason to bring Damian to Bruce.
Jason may not even engage in a “roaring rampage of revenge” against Bruce. Mainstream-Talia’s manipulations helped cause Jason’s revenge (“You remain unavenged”). Talia has no reason to amp Jason’s revenge in the YJ-verse – she needs Jason to get Damian and himself to Gotham asap.
Jason’s rage may not even kick in until after he hands Damian over – it could be days or weeks later when Jason discovers the Joker is still alive. Enter the Red Hood.
If Jason does go all revenge-driven Red Hood, I am going to be seriously annoyed if he focuses his anger on Dick and not Tim.
Bad enough Dick stole the founding of Young Justice and the Kon friendship from Tim, if he takes the “replacement feud” I’m going to have a fit.
Dick is the original Bat-Family thief – first Barbara has multiple accomplishments stolen from her history in order to make her Dick’s “true love”, and then Dick steals the founding of Young Justice and Superboy from Tim!
I love you, Dick, but stop stealing your sibling’s stuff. They are allowed to have accomplishments and storylines without you hogging the action!

Batman Adventures: Joker’s Late-Night Lunacy
Tumblr media
Batman Adventures #3 Robin: No Writer: Kelley Puckett Penciler: Ty Templeton Inker: Rick Burchett Colorist: Rick Taylor Letterer: Tim Harkins Editor: Scott Peterson Date: December, 1992
So if y’all remember, the last two issues featured Penguin and Catwoman each doing a favor for the Joker in exchange for basically nothing other than a fun idea as a way to kill some time. This is the issue where we see what it is amounting to, and after seeing so much of Batman TAS, it’s nothing to get excited over. We’ve seen the Joker hack the airwaves several times just like he does here, so the stuff involving Penguin and Selina’s help seems like wasted buildup. Where the issue’s strength lies is in how brutal the Joker is. He has his scary moments in the show all the time, sure, but first panel of the comic, he ambushes Commissioner Gordon in his own office, waving around a gun. It only shoots tranquilizers, but Joker saves the real damage for later, when he can broadcast it all over the city.
After Gordon passes out, the comic shifts focus to a hostage-situation on top of a rooftop. It doesn’t really relate to the Joker story, but it does give a reason for Batman to be at the right place and the right time to catch Joker’s show. It also serves as a glimpse into Batman’s nightly patrol. What’s pretty crazy is that it appears that the hostage is the thug’s girlfriend, and once Batman leaves, she says, “How dare you point that thing at me.” You can tell that she’s rightfully pissed. He assures her that it was all an act, but goes to hit her several panels later when she accuses him of murder. Batman returns before contact is made, but you don’t see too many scenes like this in the cartoon. I love how when Batman swings away, she just goes, “Bye.” Like she’s thrilled that maybe her boyfriend was taught a lesson.
Next, Batman passes by an electronics store, and sees on the screens that the Joker has Gordon all tied up. Not only that, but he starts beating the poor man with a baseball bat and promises to bring more the following night. Jesus! The actually slugs are not shown, but you see the public’s and Batman’s reactions. The people of Gotham have their eyes wide and their mouths wider. Batman just stares in silence. After the beating, the Joker is visibly sweating, and he has to comb his hair back into place. Even though it’s left up to our imagination, we get a pretty clear picture in our heads of what the wood-to-bone connections were like. Wasn’t this comic for kids?
Batman gets a hunch of who Joker will like nab next, and so he pays a little visit to…Harvey Dent! Who…is using the Bat-Signal. Oh. Okay. Well, here’s the first real continuity error of the series, and this is what I’ve been so excited to research and talk about (continuity stuff in general, not this specific case)! So let’s talk about it! Harvey Dent should not be able to use the Signal, because it made its first appearance way after Harvey should have become Two-Face. This is true whether you go by production-order or airing-order. So to make this work, you’d have to rearrange the episodes a bit and mess with the timeline. Some fans are into this, I’m not really. But, this is a minor detail, and to me, it’s not enough to label the entire issue as non-canon. We can retcon the signal, and pretend it was never there, and that works for me. Anyway, Harvey Dent and Batman figure out a plan, and also Bullock is there being a useless obstacle as he so often is. I wish I read this before the Two-Face episode, it’s more Dent character development, and therefore, more sad to watch him eventually crumble.
On the next page, the Joker and his men break into Dent’s home, but the Joker thinks that it’s going way too smoothly, and that Batman is sure to show up. And just like that, he does, but is shot with the tranquilizer and knocked out. This surprised me when I read it. Batman and Dent discussed their plan, and then it immediately failed. Well, so I thought. That night, when Joker is broadcasting his new victims, Dent and Batman, he tells Gotham that it’s time to unmask the passed-out Dark Knight for everyone to see. But when Joker takes Batman’s mask off, we see that it is actually Harvey Dent. The one whom Joker thought was Dent is revealed to be Batman in disguise and… You guys know I hate this kind of plot-point, right? But here it’s even worse. We see “Batman” very clearly during these panels, and it’s so obvious that it’s just not a drawing of Harvey. Their jawlines are completely different, and hell, I refuse to believe that Joker wouldn’t notice that. Disguises should not follow Scooby Too logic in Batman. I feel like it’s a cheat, and way too hard for me to believe. That is why, though, Batman and Dent were so easy to capture in the prior scene. They wanted to be captured. Batman had to let himself get beaten up as Harvey, and Harvey as Batman actually stood up to the thugs pretty well! But he’s a big guy, and I wouldn’t ever wanna mess with him. From here there is a little bit of a chase scene which takes us to a boat on the ocean (which features some really awesome nighttime drawings), but Joker ultimately gets away. The colors in this scene rock with the sky being black and the water being a bluish-green. At the very ending we get a really cool drawing of Batman treading in the salt water, and the moon glowing behind him.
The Joker drawings all looked really nice too, and even when he was off-model, it seemed to be off-model in an okay way. The same design, but elongated, or overly-expressive. He’s basically the same blend of scary and funny that  we get in his best episodes, but amped up a little bit, showing more of his serious side. We see a lot of him without any kind of smile on his face. A lot of times I feel like DCAU-drawings have a hard time with Joker’s face when his mouth is closed. Here it wasn’t an issue at all. Related to that, I kept thinking about how tough it must be to consistently capture the magic of someone else’s art-style, in this case, Bruce Timm’s. Especially since you must so often get creative with the angles and draw them in positions and actions that we just never happen to see on the tv show. There’s no frame of reference for it! A little artistic skill that I think should be considered and praised more.
Continuity status: Issues exist. Next time: Riot Act

Powerpuff Girls 2016 - “The Buttercup Job”
Tumblr media
Written by: Haley Mancini
Written & Storyboarded by: Jaydeep Hasrajani, Leticia Abreu Silva
Directed by: Nick Jennings, Bob Boyle
A job (not-so) well done.
Tumblr media
This episode starts with a description of the wacky object of the week: the Doom Cube. Whoever wields does have the potential to destroy mountains, or triangles, with the push of its button. It is not the Narrator talking about this object, as he has been missing since Season 1. Instead, it's another character that was missing since Season 1.
Tumblr media
It's none other than Jemmica, the titular frenemy from Frenemy! They do a decent job in reintroducing this character to those who did not see her debut episode. She's an adventerous elementary-aged Lara Croft/Indiana Jones character who the Powerpuff Girls have a bad history with. They even handwave that she shouldn't have survived in her last episode, proving that episodes don't just occur in their own universe. Slightly.
Jemmica tells the girls that she's on a mission to find this Doom Cube before it falls into the wrong hands. One would think the Powerpuff Girls would have second thoughts before teaming up with a girl who hypnotized them and nearly killed them, and they would be right. Blossom and Bubbles are not buying this, Blossom because she's smart enough to see a wild goose chase, and Bubbles because of the obvious wild goose joke.
Tumblr media
It does not help that she made her entrance by slamming a Jeep through the Powerpuff Girls' home before the episode started. Remember kids, do not trust a girl that joyrides a Jeep into your house. One of the girls has to learn this lesson, and no points for guessing who it is!
Sure enough, our rascally little green princess drools at the opportunity to team up with Jemmica. She does have a reason: she’s so bored waiting for Discount Jojo to do his latest doofus crime. Probably a bad sign for the show if even our main heroes are bored at the lack of action in this reboot. Buttercup promises to Blossom that they won't go with Jemmica...
Tumblr media
...but “she” will, repeating a joke from Somewhere Over The Swingset. Jemmica asks Buttercup where her sisters are, but Buttercup tells her that they're not interested in real adventures. She even tells her that Blossom thinks turning in her homework is as an adventure. Apparently, all the monster battles and criminal catching they should be doing in this series does not count.
Jemmica's first stop happens to be underwater, so Buttercup has to use her submarine aura. Gotta say, her specialty of weapons is really paying off here. While talking about her other adventures, which sound far more interesting than fighting super-lice, she mentions that she has to make the tough calls. Eventually, Jemmica sees the destination, right next to Jerry's Bait Shop.
Tumblr media
The Lost City of Atlantis! Jemmica just happens to know that this lost city happens to have a map to an evil doom cube in Poseidon's castle. Why is there a map to an evil doom cube in Poseidon's castle? Never explained, but I can imagine wanting an excuse to turn this show into Spongebob. They sure loved those explosion gags, after all.
Because Poseidon isn't much of a sharer, they're just going to have to "borrow" it. Jemmica even supplied the quote fingers with that. Buttercup immediately questions committing a crime as a crimefighter, but Jemmica tells Buttercup that she thought she was going with Buttercup, not Blossom. Just in case this line's cleverness did not come though...
Random Fish: Oh, buuuurn!
I am almost begging for the fist bumps, surprisingly absent in this episode, compared to that. Almost.
Tumblr media
Buttercup ends up in a mermaid costume, with a wah wah trumpet signalling that this is not going to work unless the guards were not very smart. I would make another toyset joke, but there has not been any toys lately. The first sign of Jemmica's jerkiness, well, outside of the whole "ramming cars into houses" thing and the "clearly being the bad influence from the beginning" thing, is that she forgot to pack Buttercup a way to breathe underwater. Thankfully, Buttercup doesn't need one. She can even magically talk underwater because superpowers.
Tumblr media
Atlantis happens to have guards, too. Because Spongebob magical aquatic kingdom, these fish talk, and they may be voiced by Rob Paulsen. It turns out, they are not very smart, and easily believe that these two merpeople are just here to clean the place where the map resides. There's some decent humor by PPG 2016 standards with these guys, not that funny, but not unwelcome either. Unlike that one fish.
Eventually, Buttercup swims too close to a wall, and the mermaid tail tearr off, revealing those evil human legs. Immediately calling this bug eyed freak a human, the guard fish charge after them. Some other fellow notices these humans intruding Atlantis, and Buttercup's best course of action is to shoot eye lasers first and ask questions later.
Tumblr media
...and that fellow turns out to be Poseidon. Those eye lasers were not even strong enough to beat some lice in the last episode, but one shot from Buttercup, and the King of Atlantis is, in Buttercup’s words, "not moving". Jemmica is happy about this murder, but Buttercup has second thoughts about this...
Tumblr media
...or not, as they immediately leave Atlantis in the submarine aura, leaving Atlantis' king to die. It is unexpected, shocking, and surprisingly dark, but it's also unnecessary. I could see it as a way for Jemmica to blackmail Buttercup into doing her deeds, but outside of some moping about it while driving away, but it only comes up in the end.
Tumblr media
Their next stop is the not-so-mythical land of Antarctica. A step down from Atlantis, to be honest. There's no talking fish guards, no kings, and no underwater adventures. Here, it's just snow and penguins, and the only joke they can come up with is seeing one of these penguins get launched into the sky as soon as Buttercup's sub aura crashes through the ice.
They crash through the ice right in front of the cavern where the Doom Cube is, and both of them fly out to smell the cool air. I can imagine a joke where Jemmica asks Buttercup how she can smell with no nostrils, but Buttercup just grows nostrils in this scene. Of course. Unfortunately, this cave is blocked by a door that's frozen solid. Buttercup decides this is the time to do her best Mr. Freeze impression. Sadly, it's that one.
Buttercup: Know why I'm good at parties? ...because I know how to break the ice!
Badum-tsh! She rapidly hits the ice...
Tumblr media
...and the door just slides open. Who would have guessed secret doors just give up if you hit them enough? Sure enough, the Doom Cube is just there, clearly not a trap that awakens a bunch of undead guards. Buttercup immediately tries to eye laser the Doom Cube, but Jemmica stops her. No, it's not because eye lasering an explosive box is not a good idea, but because Jemmica wants to use it in adventures, adventures Buttercup can do if she seperates from the Powerpuff Girls. Clearly, this must be the line that Jemmica crosses...
Buttercup: I'm through being a Powerpuff Girl.
Or maybe Buttercup will just outright give up being a superhero. In a better show, this should hint at a sort of twist, but I can expect this from the green one. They grab the Doom Cube from what is clearly not a trap that will awaken a bunch of undead guards, and immediately comment that this was extremely easy!
Tumblr media
Of course, this was a trap that awakens a bunch of undead guards, and you know they're serious when they do not talk. At least Atlantis had fitting fish guards with personality, here, the defenders of the cube are just generic zombie warlords. The episode would have been a lot better if they decided to keep this plot in Atlantis. It would have had more of a focus.
The door also decides to shut itself very slowly. Buttercup easily manages to get to the exit with her ability to fly very fast, accidently leaving Jemmica behind.
Tumblr media
Oh, of course Buttercup isn't the type to just let her new friends die, so she flies off to rescue her, dropping the Doom Cube in the process!
Tumblr media
Oops.
Okay, I made that up, including the image. We never figure out what exactly the Doom Cube does to cause its doom. Does it launch ancient missles? Does it just explode? Wouldn't that kill the user too, or does it form some sort of protective barrier? It is left up to the imagination, which this show could use.
Tumblr media
She flies in and punches out the guards in one freeze frame beatdown, only to immediately get grabbed in the same way. This would be another hint if this kind of inconsistency did not happen to them constantly. All three of them can beat up a Terminator Unicorn in one minute, and then immediately get annihilated by him in the next. It's believable.
Showing some contrast between evil and not-so-evil, Jemmica decides to do one of her other aforementioned tough calls: to hot tail it with the Doom Cube, leaving Buttercup to die as the ice door shuts. Is this the end for Buttercup and her extremely poor judgment...or is it something else?
Tumblr media
It is something else. A big twist happens, and, to not give it away more than that above image does, it happens to be that "sort of twist" I mentioned earlier. The only way it does not come entirely out of nowhere is if you assume that a lot of the problems of this episode are clues to it. I can almost appreciate that, even if it is not intended.
Jemmica escapes using a smoke bomb, which was used as a "running gag" that only happens three times, once with that wild goose. She could still reappear again, and...eh.
Does the title fit?
In the end, Buttercup does manage to do some sort of job, in more ways than one.
How does it stack up?
This episode feels like a Scrooge McDuck adventure done by a cartoon that has issues. The ending is what makes this not a Disgusted for me, but I can't say it was an enjoyable episode.
Tumblr media
The Fly Pow Bye double feature continues at 8 pm, where the Powerpuff Girls burp. Let's say this one was the highlight.
