things i learnt during my first term at uni

have a system to classify and organise your notes!

whether you type or handwrite your notes or write them digitally, make sure you work out a labelling system to keep all your documents in order.

i have google drive folders for every year and class and label things by week, lecture slides and notes/seminar notes/reading document/reading notes using abbreviations.

don’t be afraid of office hours!

to me office hours seemed super scary, as with many new things at uni i didn’t know what the exact procedure would be and thus shied away at first.

the office hours i actually attended were genuinely useful and in case you also feel a bit iffy about going, i recommend sticking to a few key points to get the conversation started

1. why are you there? - easy but prepare to talk about a) the class, b) the assignment, c) the readings, d) the workload, e) the professor’s research, f) further materials, g) …

2. what help would you benefit from? - assignments, extracurriculars in a specific field, internship ideas, how to access or find out about certain services on campus, ... etc.!

TRY. don't be afraid to fail, you might even succeed.

instead of holding yourself back because you either don't like being amazing at something first try or because you are afraid people might be better than you at something and you would feel "out of place", just show up! go and try out for this really random thing, run in that election for this cool society you wanna hold a position in, go to castings and submit your writing to competitions, don't be afraid to try new stuff! i went from being afraid to participate in a selection trial to being offered a really amazing opportunity and from committing to a debate tournament (fully expecting to bomb) to actually ending up in the finale. and even when things don't go amazing and you rank last, you tried, and that's worth a win.

last but not least: give yourself breaks and don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Just a random old story of mine. Feel free to ignore.

I remember the first days of college in a different city: I didn't know anyone there and it felt kinda uncomfortable; not to mention travelling for a few hours and the continuous rain weren't making it better mentally. I wasn't really open back then, but I trusted that things would have changed. In fact, I started speaking with a girl I had been seeing for a couple of days on the bus and then in my class, and we became friends. And then other two girls came in, so after a couple of weeks we had our group made.

In high school I used to play with my classmates in the hallway, in between lessons. We used to dance or sing or just do some fun nice things together. So it felt normal to me to do the same with a guy in college (ofc we were in the same course and we had been speaking for a while by then). We were dancing while waiting for the lesson but one girl of my group came in and totally looked at me judging me hard (she didn't like him much, dunno why), and then the other 2 followed. I wasn't sure what I was doing wrong, we were just having a little fun like friends? She probably had been used to something different Idk, maybe in her mind this even meant being "easy". Probably if I had been dancing with a girl it would have been better or okay. Idk. We'll never know and that's okay: it's useless to think about the whys now. She didn't tell me anything and I didn't ask (I should have though, but again I wasn't that open back then). I just stopped doing that. The guy ofc didn't tell me anything. But she acted as if it was wrong to talk with this guy or deal with him, while I found him okay? Nonetheless, I didn't speak much with him anymore (still he once offered me a ride to the station after an exam we took together, so that I could take an early train to go back home). And as for the girl, we have stopped talking, I don't even know why. She did it all. Sure I had to let her down once (and I'm still sorry about it) after the college ended, but... yeah I think it just happened cause of a bunch of situations we both were mentally in.

Anyway whatever goes on, if I learnt anything... it's your guts you need to trust, not what it looks like to someone else or what they think (or you think they think) or how they grew up or anything on the outside. Talk about stuff. Don't fear people's judgement as it originates from a place of hurt. Don't fear losing friends: real friends won't go away that easily. Respect everyone and only do what you feel like doing and enjoy. Life is too harsh and short to spend it following others' likes and dislikes. It's only yourself you need to follow, love and trust. And again remember to always communicate. Talk about your feelings. Be open: you'll know everything in case of sudden endings or any other problem.

"But if college was free, then people would abuse that and get useless degrees" hell yeah I would! If I could go to college without debt I would make it my job to get a degree in every little thing that interested me. I'd get a doctorate in film studies. I'd have a bachelor's degree for every science I like. I'd try to learn at least 5 languages with varying results. I would learn something "useful" like coding and then follow it up with a ""useless"" degree like art history. I'd be the world record speed run holder for getting every degree possible.

But I can't afford college without going into massive debt, so instead I spent the last 5 years trying to figure out what I am passionate enough about to consider going into debt over, because unfortunately being passionate about everything is extremely expensive to pursue.

He's diligent about memorising the conversion rates for ounces, pounds, the most common things etc., and recovers ok. He goes through the same stages of grief rage when he finds out about distances and lengths.

Just remember four inches are 10.16 cm and pray no one asks you to specify anything bigger than inches.

Everyone does a mental victory lap when they manage to guess how much Celsius the weather is because they keep forgetting it's Celsius*5/9+32=Fahrenheit, Engineer reminds them patiently.

The true victories are the correct temperature guesses we've made along the way.

One time, a friend asked me if I actually knew how much a tablespoon of flour was in gramms to convince me that metric users also make use of volume based units without thinking about them. But little did she know a heaped spoonful of 405 flour is about 15g and a level tablespoon is 10g.

i really wanted to paint this since about march, but haven't really found the time to do so. at last, i finished it before the end of pride month.

the two girls are dressed in traditional Slovak folk dress, or kroj (traditional folk formalwear) from Piešťany region. Piešťany and the nearby village of Krakovany have one of the most gorgeous forms of kroj in the entire country and for a long time, dolls dressed in this style of dress were gifted to foreign delegations to represent my country. the same country that won't represent people like me

it is a form of reclamation, in a way, to depict sapphic love in this dress. we're here, and have always been here, even if the rest of the people will deny us our existence. this is for all my fellow queers living through being a hot point of debate during elections. you are seen and you are loved. you are part of this country, and you are part of our culture, and the culture belongs to you just as much as to everyone else
