And don't underestimate peoples' threshold for "cringe". There are plenty of lovers of melodramatic sappy romance, and gory bloody whump, and kinky weird smut. You won't be the only person on the planet to find a topic intriguing, even in a small fandom.

So I have to ask, what was fandom like in the lead up to Sozin's Comet and the early months afterwards? Have any fandom trends or headcanons persisted today? I am particularly interested in what people thought about Azula since it seems like fandom's opinions on her underwent a massive shift after the Netflix revival.

Did people think she suffered from long-term mental health issues like the Yang comics eventually canonized, or was her insanity just stress induced psychosis? Did they see her as product of nature or nurture?

Also, what did people think about how the process of de-colonization and de-Sozination would go? Did fandom's consensus map onto what was eventually canonized in the comics and roleplaying game?

Finally, what did people think Aang's reincarnation would be like, as well as the world they would inhabit? Did any of fandom's headcanons end up being reflected in Korra, and if so, to what degree?

What was fandom like in the lead up to Sozin's Comet?:

So there was a lot of frustration aimed at Nickelodeon because they'd aired everything up to DoBS and then randomly stopped for over seven months, after holding onto S3 for nearly ten months to begin with. In fact, the following episodes were released on DVD before they even aired on TV:

- The Western Air Temple

- The Firebending Masters

- The Boiling Rock (both parts!)

So there was a ton of discourse about spoilers as well, and if you look back at fics from 2008-2009 people will warn about spoilers for those episodes if relevant.

It was probably the worst time to be an Avatar fan, except possibly during S4 of Korra, which Nick wouldn't air at all and instead just released online, because of those wacky homosexuals.

Have thoughts on Azula changed?

Did people think her mental health issues would be long-term?

I certainly did, though I have permanent mental health issues myself, so that could be an influence! I think the general take at the time was yes. If people tried to diagnose her, they often went to schizophrenia, although at the time, you had to be 18 irl to receive that diagnosis if your provider was using the current DSM? (That changed in 2013.) I personally think if she "has" anything, she's more schizoaffective + C-PTSD + a dissociative disorder of some kind. But I'm open to takes of it being a one-off stress induced psychotic break as well.

Was she considered a product of nature or nurture?

I feel like I was pretty alone in considering it to be largely nurture at the time. I wasn't actually alone, but the fandom at large definitely viewed her as an irredeemable psychopath by and large. Actually, Bryke mentioned in an interview in like 2010 or so that it was explicitly intended to be nurture, but were largely ignored. Maybe it was the first edition of the art book?

How did people think decolonization/de-Sozinification would go?

I don't recall this really being even thought of in-depth until The Promise released. The idea of colonialism and indigenous rights hadn't really permeated the fandom before that, probably due to both the overall young age it encompassed at the time, as well as those being newer concepts at the time. If you read a lot of early fanfic that goes into post-canon, it's either really vague, or the politics don't hold up at all. Not universally true, but the vast majority.

How did people imagine Aang's reincarnation and their era? Were any of these thoughts borne out in Korra?

Most fic focused exclusively on Aang. I didn't see much speculative "previous/future Avatar" genre fic until Korra basically made it a thing. However, everyone was pretty taken aback at the rapid industrialization and leap in technology that Korra portrayed, as I recall. In fact, that's still a (less common) criticism today.

Hey love! I appreciate your interest in my oc's and my art! I'm sorry it took long to get to your ask. At the moment, I'm highly focused on Niah Foxx, whom I've been developing since 2022.

Her main story circles around the end of Cowboy Bebop. She woke up from cryogenic sleep, decades in the future after an accident occurred in her past, only to discover that mankind has since then taken to the stars and dwell on other planets. She's surprised to find out she's now on Mars, and even more shocked by the unsettling state of planet earth and the moon, both damaged by the gate accident during her slumber. It takes her a few years to try to adjust, especially being alone in a new world with no relatives she can no longer connect with.

Niah is quite reserved and soft, observant and a compassionate young woman, and believes she's unfit for this hostile world that's full of crime syndicates with a corrupt government, as it seems society as a whole has lost a connection within itself. She believes the future is bleak, but she keeps a dash of hope alive by immersing herself in poetry and gardening that becomes coping mechanisms do deal with her loss of beloved earth. And rollerskating is a huge distraction as well.

In my Smallville verse for her, it's based on a farm au I created when I was roleplaying her with my lovely friend (niran). But in this specific verse I wanted to focus on a younger, cynical Niah in her early 20's, which fits better in with the story of smallville with a teen Clark Kent and billionaire Lex Luthor. It delves more into her family in the early 2000's and how she came to be the person she is now, a concept I can't really dive into in the bebop verse since it takes place in the future. Plus, she got powers in this verse so that's fun too.

I'm writing a fanfic: A touch in the Dark for the smallville verse to explore that side of her character as it goes deeper into her past life, only in a different fandom and a different love interest lol

I've got some writings for her main bebop verse as well, but I'mma repost them onto my new writing blog soon.

There is a good chance that this concept will come to life in the form of a fanfic (and some art).

Fun fact: I have NEVER written a fanfic before, but I do have writing experience via roleplay!

Now, NOW, in order to really get this going, some character roles will have to be assigned first. A couple of major and/or minorly-important roles are not filled because my mind is struggling to find a perfect fit. Going through your Ao3 bookmarks after you posted them… the RotG stuff makes so much sense! Did you ever write any Blackice yourself?

I loooved rise of the guardians and blackice so soo much!!! I drew some art, did a tiny one shot and had a blackice roleplay with a friend but the fanfics that held my heart in a vice was @not-poignant 's take on the pairing. They had two major blackice fanfics that live in my brain rent free, one was a brilliant dystopian military au with world building that made my brain do a flip it was so good, and the other was a sequel sort of fic from the movies exploring what happens to Jack after Jaimie dies and exploring why it impacted him more than it did the other guardians and the events that followed once his death shone a light on the true extent of Jack's loneliness.

It was that fanfic that gave me a million mental epiphanies and changed my life and I went back to reread it every year like a tradition to evaluate how my mental health had changed and where I was at now. I resonated with Jack's loneliness and invisibility a lot, especially given how I felt in my family and how things shook out somewhat neglectfully in my past relationship. Since working on myself through therapy and being in a loving attentive relationship I get to see the growth I've had mirroring that of Jack's. Their writing style inspired me greatly, especially how they handled characterisation and character motivation. No scene is wasted. I especially loved how they used every sex scene to either further the plot or reveal something crucial about the characters and the situation developing. They're a top notch a tier aussie writer (a fellow Aussie!) and I highly recommend you to read their fics and shower their work with some love! (They've got some great original works too!) (I'm a big fan lmao I cosplayed their characters, drew art, all the fun stuff)

For people who are fans of Billford and the whole "king of nightmares" schtick, blackice I find can be a softer sweeter version of it without the worshipful dynamics or the toxic betrayal moments between the two. It's basically the boogeyman Pitch Black with mischievous winter boy Jack Frost. It's still got the "join the dark side" elements ("It's not too late to join me"/"what goes better together than cold and dark") and both pairings play on the whole "they are both lonely and one is trying to play on that to sway the other" with world domination stakes although Billford is leaning harder on the manipulation side of things to achieve this (Pitch tries manipulating but it comes off as more of a sales pitch than the degree of cruel manipulation Bill does) there are aspects of the whole nightmare king powers that can be fun to see (reading ones fears vs mind reading) and for fans of the whole corruption/bad ending trope there is a lot of fics out there where Jack gets corrupted into a nightmare boyo like how Ford becomes a henchmaniacs/Bill's right hand/Bill's pet (yeah I see you out there lmao) ect, for folks on board for a bad guy gets redeemed fic tho there are heaps more of those for Pitch since he's actually a hot noble single dad in a lot of cases. His apologies/acceptance comes a lot more naturally BC technically he did bad things BC he was possessed, Bill definitely does not have that excuse.

Anyway I've rambled for a long time but basically anyone who enjoyed reading KMKY and wants to read something amazing while waiting for the new chapter (which I'm working on haha might be done just after Xmas) then definitely read not-poignants works. I promise you they are very poignant and will give you the sort of cathartic cry you got from chapter 34 and 50 of KMKY.

unpopular opinions on marauders!

peter and sirius were never equals. it was always james and sirius, then remus, and lastly peter.

peter pettigrew is a lazily written character, and is often overlooked by the fandom. he is basically the reason why the whole harry potter story started yet people minimize his character to a coward. although i understand why he is oversimplified in the books, because they are mainly written for children who don't really get the multifaceted complexions of morally grey characters; i believe that we as the fandom should dive more deeply in his motives.

regulus is interesting cause rowling didn't have the chance to ruin his character.

i hate seeing sirius portrayed as a dumb womanizer, or reduced to his sexuality/romantic relationships only. it takes guts to stand up against your fucked up family and run away from them as a teen. he has so many interesting aspects to his personality and people usually choose to ignore it.

i love james and lily together but still lily is kinda wrong for marrying her literal best friends' bully.

a lot of us would be bullied by the marauders for being nerds.

Q: What plans do you have for this page?

A: I'm thinking of making this a half-art/writing, half-update blog. Up until this point, I've mainly been posting life updates and stuff on Wattpad, but I'm fairly certain that people can't access these posts without making an account with the site first. And since a lot of people on the great World Wide Web have Tumblr accounts, why not transfer some of those posts here? However, in order for me to do that, you first need to know a few things:

~ I wrote a futuristic, Kinoko Kingdom-esque DSMP fic on Wattpad called "An Herb's Guide To Drowning". You can access that while signed out, so feel free to give it a read if you'd like! ~ As far as major-project-style writing goes, I’m…working my way through the void of my mind, as it were. Let’s just leave it at that. “The Adventures of Rosie and Ichabod” is one small, slice-of-life oneshot collection I’ve got going- and there’s one more thing in the mix I can’t talk about much now- but just know I am active and I am working. Slow as a snail in energy drink rehab, yes, but working nonetheless. XD ~ The fic itself is long. Like, we're talking nearly 700 Google Doc pages long. And it has a Mature rating stamped onto it on top of that. So if you're not at least 15, I'd really prefer if you didn't read this thing.

Q: What fandoms are you in? What sort of art-based nonsense can we expect from here?

A: Oh, God, a lot. Recently, I've been drowned head-first into the lovely world of indie animation- specifically (and not in order of importance), Murder Drones, Lakadaisy, Cardinal Garden (when it comes out), Pieces of Powder, and possibly a few more that I can't think of right now. I’m also partial to the Dream SMP/Quackity SMP, Animaniacs/Pinky and The Brain (both the original and the reboot), YouTube storytime animators (Jaiden Animations, Rebecca Parham/Let Me Explain Studios, etc.), Vocaloid/UTAULoid, and Broadway...a lot of freakin' Broadway.

Basically, expect chaos of the highest degree. XD

This is going to be a long one, so a quick read more...

I'm actually going to answer them out of order, so I hope you don't mind!

A quick disclaimer: this is just how my brain approaches it, but everyone is different! Also I'm a fanfic writer doing this in my free time, none of this is professional advice or anything so take it with a grain of salt.

Where do you find inspiration?

I am one of those people who cannot stop reading, writing, watching, listening, etc. because if I'm left alone with my thoughts for too long nothing good will come of it lol. So I am constantly, constantly doing something, usually two things if I can (writing and listening to music, working out and reading webtoons, playing games and listening to audio books, playing D&D and doodling, embroidery and watching TV, the list goes on). So, to answer your question: everywhere!

Every thing I do, even if I ended up hated it, is such great inspiration to draw from. If I were to give a few things extra props, I would say D&D is phenomenal experience in putting yourself in various characters shoes and learning how to react, and webtoons are great for tropes/subverting them as well as pacing (both good and bad hah). Edit to add: Anime. I've mentioned I based my fic's arcs on anime arcs and completely forgot to list it-- very key to my inspiration!

Also lots and lots of hobbies and I will always try anything once. I've rock climbed, I've crocheted, I've done pottery, I've lockpicked (for real), I've danced, I've metal worked, I've done martial arts, etc. ADHD helps with this one 😅

Real life experiences are super helpful, but it's kind of harder to pinpoint how those are inspirational, they just kind of are.

How do you come up with plot points?

I think I once vaguely mentioned that writing BG3 fanfic feels like playing solo D&D. And that's basically how I approach plot points!

So rather than like, this happens then this happens, I look at it as if I have a framework of what I would like to happen, with certain beats that need to be met, but then I just kind of let the characters roleplay that out. Sometimes it leads to things I wasn't expecting, sometimes I need to pivot like a DM with an unruly party lol. But, since I'm working with a framework, it's usually really easy to write around the characters' choices.

For the framework itself, I usually just have a vague idea that I try to poke holes into until it turns into something bigger. So like, "reincarnation story" -> how long are they dead? Is that long enough to be impactful? Why do they care about their previous life? In what ways can they pick up from where they left off and in what ways can't they?

I do the same with one-shots to be honest: "proposing to Astarion" -> who would be involved and how? How would Tav's behavior change? How would Astarion interpret that? How would Tav react to him and pivot?

It's just a lot of questions 😂

How do you decide one idea is better than another?

This is kind of tough to do, and not always a conscious choice I'd say, but roughly two factors:

1. Is this true to the character? Which idea am I more likely to go 'oh yes, he would absolutely do that'? And if they both seem equally likely, which idea would lead to the character experiencing more growth or more actual challenge?

2. Do I like it? Honestly, the most important one for someone like me with ADHD. Because if I don't like it, it won't get written lol. If I like two ideas, but one of them is pulling me toward it with half written dialogue and full on scenes playing in my head, I know which one I'll pick every time.

What is your writing process like?

With all of the above said, my writing process is kind of all over the place. But a very, very rough outline, using one of the one-shots rotting in my drafts as an example...

First comes the idea. Ex: 'Tav and Astarion sparring early game'

Then comes a rough framework. Ex: you're sparring with a party member -> Astarion is watching, amused -> you convince him to spar you somehow -> sparring happens -> Astarion is impressed, intrigued

Then usually comes dialogue (though admittedly sometimes this comes first hah), because I like to build around the decisions they make. Ex: "Oh my dear, surely you can do better than that!" -> first thing I wrote for the fic. Kind of sets the mood, the tone.

Then I kind of write whichever scenes either need to be added to help me understand where the story is going or I add the scenes I want to write (knowing that's a dangerous game, since I might lose interest if all the fun is done upfront).

Once I'm done writing, I reread it once for typos, flow issues, inconsistencies and the like. If I read it too many times I start to overanalyze it, so I try to just release it into the world before that happens lol.

A few added steps that don't always happen:

If I get stuck on a scene: I read the sections leading up to it out loud, hoping my mouth will just fill in the rest (works out a lot of the time 😂)

If I don't like the way the dialogue sounds: I put on my best Astarion and Tav accents and act it out. Usually helps me figure it out or at least catch where it's snagging.

If I think something a character does just isn't making sense: 'ugh, that's ridiculous, why would you do that?' -> usually it means I either didn't set the scene up right, didn't give it enough background or context, or I'm not understanding the motivations enough-- all of which I need to go back and flesh out more.

If I don't like what I'm writing anymore: deadly for a brain like mine, really, but I've found ways around it pretty well. First, reread the fic! I usually want to know what happens next and my brain will kick back into high gear. Then listen to a song that evokes the feel I want from the fic. Sometimes I'll listen to it on repeat as I'm driving, doing dishes, playing a game. Like it's infusing into me lol. And if neither of those work, I try to give myself a challenge. Like, write a sentence and see if I can make it fit into the fic -- it doesn't actually need to go into the final version, but the challenge is what gets me up and going.

Anyway! That was a whole lot. I hope some of it was helpful, and most of it made sense hah. Again, thanks so much for the question anon! I love answering these ❤️

hello hello!!!! my names rae and i'm open for business for fanfics!! I'm sort of experienced in writing, having written fanfictions in the past and also dabbled in a bit of semi-lit roleplay. i mostly do total drama but may expand to other fandom's as I get more comfortable!
