Today I was thinking about documentaries, so here are some of my favourite documentaries:

Fire of Love (2022) - the love story of two volcanologists, set against the fiery backdrop of our planet's awesome and terrifying destructive power. The awe-inspiring scale of volcanic eruptions is juxtaposed with the personal, intimate story of these two soulmates.

Into the Inferno (2016) - a study of volcanoes and the way they shape the cultures and societies around them, told in Werner Herzog's usual profound and existentialist way

The Dawn Wall (2017) - the odd and amazing story of a man who decides to scale a 3000-foot cliff with his bare hands

Touching the Void (2003) - the thrilling survival of two men who climb up a mountain, and the harsh choice that is made when one of them gets injured

Man on Wire (2008) - a portrait of an eccentric and unusual man who decides to perform an illegal tightrope-walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.

Encounters at the End of the World (2007) - a captivating portrayal of the daily life of scientists in Antarctica. Werner Herzog transforms the bleak and frozen environment into a surreal and mind-boggling alien landscape.

The Deepest Breath (2023) - the story of a record-breaking female free-diver (someone who swims as deep as possible then returns to the surface with a single breath)

Last Breath (2019) - the story of a diver carrying out deep-sea repairs when his umbilical cable gets cut off, leaving him stranded at the bottom of the ocean

Sherpa (2015) - a depiction of the injustice faced by the Sherpas of Nepal, who have the thankless job of helping rich tourists climb up Mount Everest. The filming of the documentary is interrupted by an avalanche, throwing the crew and their subjects into chaos.

Aftershock: Everest and the Nepal Earthquake (2022) - a similar documentary about a devastating earthquake and the Nepalis, foreign tourists, and Everest climbers who were impacted by it. I cried a lot.

Take Care of Maya (2023) - the devastating story of a young girl with a rare neurological condition, who is wrongfully taken from her parents when they are falsely suspected of abusing her. I cried A LOT.

Abducted in Plain Sight (2017) - a true crime documentary about a predator who worms his way into a family. Some of the most staggeringly clueless parents I've ever seen in my fucking life

webcomic/indie comic from the 2010s. basically a sci-fi short story about a young girl (with red hair?) who was being raised by scientists as part of an experiment. she receives a haircut/has her head shaved, in preparation for her annual brain scan/testing. it is revealed that while her body is human, her "brain" is artificial, made of computer implants throughout her skull and spine. at some point her biological mother (also a scientist on the same campus?) encounters her and is repulsed, viewing her as a machine who has murdered her daughter.

it was very poignant and it bruised my heart and i can NOT find it anywhere

Now what if that was literal?

Hear me out, Danny outlives his friends, parents, sister. Danny becomes a literal whale.

Well, not a literal one because he's a ghost, but he takes the shape one of at the very least. He's just a giant, glowing white whale that looks pretty divine not going to lie.

Danny leaves earth. It wasn't safe for him anymore, what with the GIW and all that as even the ghosts found it not even worth anymore to visit the mortal world.

Except for Desiree and Spectra, but that's besides the point.

But Danny doesn't retreat to the zone, he's always longed for space, but because of his new half humanness he doesn't get believe he could've ever gone because, well. Yea.

But Danny goes fuck it and goes anyway. His form shifts from human to that of a giant whale, and he swims out into the vastness of space.

Years pass, and Danny does start getting bigger as he aged. He explored the vastness of space, marveling at many things, the different planets, the stars, the formations of rock and other things.

Then he encounters someone he never though he would've.

Vlad.

Well, he knew Vlad was left behind in space by his father but he didn't think he would find him again and Vlad seemed... different, from what he remembered.

For one thing, he didn't even know where Vlad began and space ended. He got only see those red eyes that even hinted at it being the man. His body was void black and filled with stars upon stars, all glittering from his body and Vlad barely even seemed to notice him, or if he did, he didn't seem to care at all.

So, Danny took him.

He was both curious and felt a bit bad about what happened to Vlad, even if he didn't know exactly what happened, and he couldn't just leave him there either.

So on his back Vlad went, and his travels continued.

It seemed to be the correct decision, really, because slowly overtime Vlad seemed to be regaining his awareness. Then slowly, tentatively, started to speak with him through ghost speak.

Vlad only seemed to vaguely remember what he was before space. He remembered hating a man, loving a woman, wanting a son, loneliness and a boy with white hair and toxic green eyes.

Even though Vlad was his former enemy, his nemesis, and someone who took the world hostage.

He couldn't help but feel pity for him.

Then their travels continued.

Years pass unnoticed, when in space, with Danny slowly getting bigger and bigger as the two travel throughout. They've come into contact with various civilizations, some hostile, some peaceful, some neutral.

The hostile ones never lasted long, even if Danny never lifted a flipper to do anything most of the time, Vlad made sure of it.

They came at went as they pleased, and Danny believes that they've gained a bit of a reputations over their adventures, but neither he nor Vlad knew exactly what they said. It did prove useful in some cases, however.

A few more years, and Danny feels that this system is vaguely familiar. Which happens sometimes, considering he's been travelling for so long. He then finds out why it was so familiar.

He came across Earth and, oh. When was the Earth so small?

Well, not small really, but when was he just only a bit smaller than it?

Did it shrink when he was away? Or did he just grow?

That doesn't matter though. What does, is the fact that currently seemed to be an invasion going on, on his home planet thank you very much. He did not like the fact that there was a massive fleet parked right outside his home.

So he spoke to Vlad, expressed his displeasure, Vlad responded back knowingly and went off to make the source of his displeasure disappear. That doesn't Danny was idle either, the fleet was big and, well.

It's been a while since he's stretched himself in a fight.

when i thought of this initially, i wanted to make it smutty but i just couldn’t stop thinking about this sweet, sweet boy. one hug could cure him

stiles stilinski, the touch-starved boy.

stiles stilinski, who after his mother passed away, lost the only one he shared physical contact with (if you don't count the bullying and chaining scott up). who genuinely couldn't tell you the last time he hugged someone — probably the last time someone almost died.

who was grateful for the touches he did get, whether it be a high five, or even being shoved into a locker. at this point, touch was touch, and he would take what he could get. who thought that's how the rest of his life was going to be, sorrowfully accepting the fact that physical touch just wasn't in the cards for him in this lifetime, and he dreamed of what could be in the next one.

until you.

you, who wasn't shy with your affection, a touchy person by nature with everyone you came across. who sat confused whenever you'd rest your hand on stiles' arm, only to earn a flinch in response. who wondered if you were overstepping, but as time went on, you began to realize he simply wasn't used to it. who grew sad at that knowledge, confronting him and learning his past. who gave him the biggest hug he's ever received upon hearing his story, a soul-healing kind of comfort stiles didn't know existed.

stiles stilinski, who grew to yearn for your touch, shamelessly finding any possible way he could touch you every moment he saw you. who was now no stranger to being held or holding someone else close, even gong as far to initiate the touch himself.

who’s touching grew to become more over time, a language he spoke against his better judgment, reaching for you and exposing his true feelings. who blurted it out one friday evening during a star wars marathon, how he thinks he’s falling in love with you. who was blown away when you pulled him in for a kiss, a form of touch he definitely hadn’t experienced much of. who couldn’t shake the sensation of your lips against his for days until he saw you next, immediately approaching you outside of school and kissing you like he’d never get the chance to again, to feel what he’d been craving since the first time.

who, once given permission, refused to take his hands off of you in any fashion, no matter where the two of you were. who woke up each morning itching to feel your hands in his, who yearned for your lips, a constant fight with himself to not make out with you in inappropriate situations, his brain wracking itself for an excuse to pull you into the next room and kiss you until neither of you can breathe.

my life may get tough. but i was never down a crevasse with a broken leg and seemingly no way out when the only other person who knew I was there thought i was dead.

so I take a weird amount of comfort from watching this film and knowing that sometimes you've just got to drag your arse out of that hole and keep dragging until you get where you need to be.

(and also that watching films rather than mountaineering is the way to go 😆!)
