Transformers Fanfic Recs

Hey so, we remember there being talk about starting up fic recs again, so we went and made a fic rec bookmark collection with different subcategories (short fic, short shipping fic, and long fic or series) on Ao3! For most of them we haven’t commented what we liked or not, just two where we mentioned something that squicked us but we enjoyed the work and think it’s good. We don’t have the spoons really to do reviews of them or add captions. Here’s a snapshot of the bookmark lists, which are set up to be randomly listed:

3) Cybertronian Tales! #0 Prologue by sofie_the_trans_girl (the series is incomplete right now, but if you want to read some action set during the WW1 era with Anode as a biplane of the time working with Marissa Faireborn, highly recommend this)

2) Roadside Attraction by Lush Specimen (this Arcee/Aileron fic they wrote is so fun and cute, with a lovely depiction of emotions, we want to read their longer fic Raiders of the Lost Forge but haven’t had the chance)

3) Is It Gay to Ask Your Friend out by birdwhythis (absolutely hilarious Nautica/Velocity fic. Haven’t read a lot of their stuff otherwise but we enjoyed this fic)

There’s a bunch of other writers and fics in three collections put together, over 76 bookmarks so far. In regards to the ship fics, most of what we read for that is sapphic/lesbian or similar content, so if you’re having a hard time finding something like that and want something that isn’t erotic (there’s one or two fics on there that hint at eroticism about as much as the queer robot canon does these days for humor) hopefully this list helps! There are more on our reading list we haven’t gotten to yet, and we will eventually venture into reading longer fics more :3

In the beginning, it seemed so simple. The Senate had informed him immediately upon his awakening exactly who and what his enemy was, and he had not questioned them. Why would he have? The evidence was plain all around him. He arose as Optimus Prime, and immediately set out to war against Megatron; Megatronus, in those days, and his Descepticons. Orion Pax had been weak in those early days, his spark still under shock of taking the Matrix of Leadership, capable of little other than tracking Megatron on the battlefield, the spark always settling in whichever nook of his spark chamber was closest to Megatron.  Another harsh stab of fury filled his processors. The Matrix… Optimus could feel Orion's hatred and fear of it. He couldn't understand it. The Matrix of Leadership was a gift to be bestowed only on those worthy of a Prime. Orion Pax should be grateful towards the Matrix. For millennia… he didn't understand.

You know what, I actually meant to draw Cheetor in a barista apron, because i drew Rodimus in a barista apron (not depicted here), but then I realized that his cheetah head is in the way, and so I just drew Cheetor x 2, lookin real friendly. Should I just draw a longer apron that would fit under the cheetah head? Should I give the cheetah a little maid cap? Wait why a maid cap, I’m not drawing him as a maid. Nevermind I think I answered my question.

After Optimus was expelled from the Autobot Academy, he had no sense of what to do or where to go. Desperate for purpose, he ends up on a mining crew that travels the galaxy. But when their ship is attacked, Optimus' life will change forever.

Whether or not he'll be able to handle those changes is yet to be determined.

In which Optimus shares with his greatest foe, and former friend - Megatron, the one time a year he allows himself to feel amid the throes of their War within a Christmas market.

The angsty slow burn Christmas AU no one asked for.

Megatron and Optimus are turned into humans by a prototype weapon Starscream uses against them. In order for Megatron to get his revenge and Optimus to free himself of Megatron, they must reclaim their original bodies. However, will they still be Optimus Prime and Megatron by the time they do?

Of course his darling little brother Rodimus Prime is the precious hero and puts an end to Megatron’s reign, but Orion has no intention of dying a pathetic death! No! Not again! The Transformers Fic Rec community!

With Tumblr rolling out its Community function in beta, I'm jumping in to experiment with whether it's a good platform for an old idea I had to run some kind of fic rec event/feed for Transformers. Because I miss when fic rec communities were a bigger thing in fandom!

What is it?

So first off, communities are a new Beta feature Tumblr is rolling out which allows members to post and reblog to semi-public, curated feeds here on Tumblr. (If you were around when Livejournal was a thing, or use Dreamwidth, it brings a little of the way comms work(ed) on those platforms over here.)

Posts made to the community are visible when you visit it, but don't go into the wider public search. You can comment on and react to posts, and members can reblog posts from elsewhere on Tumblr into the community. The idea is for this to be a dedicated little feed you can proactively check and post to when looking for fic recs and related discussion, somewhere between a forum and a blog feed! Slower and more public than a Discord server, but more curated and targeted than just throwing stuff out there. I also hope to start doing fic rec theme/challenge weeks on there at some point, if I can get things going!

The community will be 18+ only, due to it accepting mature and explicit fic recs. Users will need to have some kind of indication on their blog they are an adult to join. A set of basic guidelines is on the new community page as the pinned post for now and can be read before choosing to join if you like.

So how do I join?

At the moment, communities are invite-only while the beta testing continues. (They are currently working on letting admins use invite links to let people join, hopefully very soon.) This means that if you would like to request to join, you will need to send me an ask so I can add you. (Or comment on this post, or... you get the idea. You have to ask me.) In the future, you'll be able to request to join yourself. As mentioned above, this community is 18+, and blogs that do not verify you are eighteen or older will not be added. (Unless I know you, I guess? But otherwise: say you're old, please, lmao.)

Anyway. Check out the community here and if you want in, hit me up! I'll go make some example posts sometime later today or tomorrow, probably. :) Let's get the ball rolling! (And if you have any suggestions and/or feedback, let me know if you want, I'm all ears.)

Starscream runs into a human on a mission and can’t seem to get rid of this pest no matter how hard he tries. He shoots him, throws him, and blows him up. Yet he keeps coming back! Now the brat has decided that harassing Starscream is his new passion project. And maybe the Decepticon air commander doesn’t mind it as much as he lets on.

Or Danny accidentally comes across a huge alien mech trying to steal from an observatory and decides that he has nothing better to do than haunt this guy and all his alien friends back on his warship. Danny needed a place to crash anyway.

This is by all means not a complete list of banger JP fics! It's my personal favorites—those fics that lodged themselves in my brain for one reason or another and never left.

Hopefully this list satisfies at least some of the sudden influx of interest for JP fics (and given how well rec'ing a fic turned out last time...) But, nah for real, not to make rec'ing fics fake deep or anything, but I think the fandom would be a better place if people were more unapologetically enthusiastic about fics and less afraid to interact with authors. So if you use this list to find some fics you have to promise to leave some unhinged comments! ٩("•̀ᴗ•́")و ̑̑

But before I start, I want to acknowledge the prevalence of potentially stereotypical depictions of Jazz in regards to his speech (❞), criminal/violent/sexual characterization (▾), or backstory/origins (⟲) in the JP/TF fandom. I've attempted to flag fics with the corresponding symbols above, because I'd like to recognize those problems while still rec'ing for a variety of other fantastic qualities. That said, I'm not infallible so please use your own discretion.

I really can't properly articulate the sheer amount of love and respect I have for MOMU other than that if you haven't read it, your life is worse for it. Go read it. Then read it again. Now. (I've read it 4 times. No, I'm not joking) I love all the fics on this list dearly, but MOMU holds a very special place in my heart. Flawless characterization, flawless dynamics, flawless plot, one-of-a-kind writing style... it's got it all. Of note: I've not flagged it despite its premise, because it will expertly subvert your expectations and you need to read it to understand. Bonus: it's got a lot of well-deserved fanart!

*It's not clear by the summary, but the series is essentially about Jazz and Prowl's developing relationship as they overcome war-related trauma, intermingled with a spectacular amount of original lore. See the author's ffn bio for a rundown. The originality and attention to detail in the world building in this AU is awe-inspiring. There are 2 fics in the JP series, but the author has a bunch of other Gen fics set in the same AU and another on ao3. Bonus: some of the Gen fics are Jazz & Prowl-centric and can be read as romantic!

*The main plot is broken into 7 separate fics, but it's all one continuous story. Read the whole thing! It's on my all time favorites. It's thrilling, tremendously action packed, and the character dynamics are some of my favorites. It's also hysterical and wholesome and I've reread it a stupid amount of times. Bonus: it's got fanart + there are 5 extra fics, including a Jazz-centric prequel, in the same AU.

While the surviving Autobots begin to flock to Earth in response to Optimus' call, trying to find a new home on the strange organic planet called Earth, some unfortunate bots are beginning to realize the price of war may have been too high. Sequel to Time

May We Never Let Go - 408,409 - pt 3 - Gen - d/c

Hell literally lies in wait above Earth as the Cybertronians and Earthlings coexist uneasily, rattled by every attack the Fallen and his master launch on them. With new evil rising, the powers that be on Earth and beyond are gearing up for war.

1. As We Come Together, prequel 2: Surface of the Sun

*Long, convoluted explanation coming up given that this series is obviously a whole different beast compared to likely any other fanfic series you or I have ever encountered in our lives... b/c the author is just superhuman or smth idk...

The series is officially listed as 4 parts (WYaIC, WTWHL, AWCT, MWNLG). Where You and I Collide is the JP-centric prequel to the other 3 Gen fics (that have substantial background JP). WTWHL is technically part 1 of the series, but it's sorta more character-focused ficlets than a continuous story... which is why I didn't specifically list it as a rec even if that makes things more confusing... (ᵕ¬ᴗ¬) Also the author didn't list Surface of the Sun as part of the series, but it's a direct prequel (like WYaIC) starring the Lambo twins and it's... oh it's so good... absolutely shatters my heart that it's been d/c'd.

I've not listed an exact world count, b/c if you want to read every bit of the AU with all its prequels and offshoots (which I would highly recommend and have done)... I'm not gonna do the math for you, sorry. The main 4-part story is ~1.7m+ which I realize is frankly insane and extraordinarily intimidating, but it is so sooo sooooo worth it. The author has created their own fully fleshed out TF world with its own lore and characters and the time and effort they've put into is mind-boggling .

Anywho, despite ultimately being d/c'd, the series is still tremendously readable and nothing about JP is left feeling unbearably unfinished. I also happened to track down the lovely author and beg for a summary of the ending, b/c I'm a bit of a freak and they very kindly provided it so if not knowing how a fic ends bothers you/prevents you from reading, you have the option of getting closure even if you can't have it written out.

Fathomless by Sroloc_Elbisivni

『oneshot - ao3 - Words: 19,949 - Fantasy AU - complete』

Jazz is drowning on dry land on the other side of the world. Once upon a time, before Jazz was born, the Rust Sea covered a swathe of Cybertron bigger than the territory of any city-state except Iacon. The sea had been more powerful than any engine besides the one at the heart of the planet itself, big enough to swallow a metrotitan in its depths, the birthplace of storms. Thing is, none of that was Jazz. He doesn’t remember those days, before he was himself, except in his dreams. And his dreams are terrifying.

*This fic makes me feel some type of way... it gives me shivers. It's so eerie and the premise is so unique. It's also beautifully bittersweet, which is a hard concept to pull off.

Prowl’s got a secret, and he’d rather be dead in the ground before he let anyone find out about it. Jazz’s got one too, but he’s not as good at hiding it. Prowl is a secret superhero, Jazz is a secret fanboy who doesn’t know that he works with the guy. By night Prowl is the virtuous hero The Judge, but by day he’s just an unassuming tactical officer.

*Jazz and Prowl are sorta painfully adorable in this fic and the JP is so sweet it makes my teeth hurt. Plus it's got a really fun premise with lots of shenanigans.

*Super interesting sorta-kinda-fix-it fic and/or explanation for the events and characterizations in IDW. There are 3 stories in the main JP plot line. Bonus: there's 2 "Extras" fics for cut scenes from the main fics.

Eternal as Love - 45,171 - pt 2

Prowl promised he would help Jazz, the ghost of the crystal chapel in the garden behind Praxus' central library. He just couldn't anticipate what shape that help would wind up taking.

*Another super unique premise! I love a good historical mystery and the imagery is specularly evocative! And I'm a sucker for the trope... which I can't reveal, because of spoilers.

Descant - 7,925 - pt 2

G1/Jux compliant. Requiem sequel. Prowl doubted that his desired image of Respected Superior Officer came across very well with a half-scrapped mech clinging to his hand, but he loomed as best as he was able and glared.

*Requiem is Jazz-centric and I'd say more of a prequel to Descant than Descant is a sequel to Requiem... if that makes any sense. Regardless of how you view it or what order you read it, it's fucking brutal. (-‿-“) Bonus: author also wrote another really great fic called Transformers: Juxtaposition which is Lambo twin-centric and OC-centric, but perhaps one of the only OC fics that I've ever enjoyed.

*This author also has a few more JP fics that I enjoy like An Offer He Can't Refuse and Long Patrol. I gotta offer aisclaimer though: the fics are... fairly cliche and a bit OOC. Hunter's Spark is much more tame than the other two, though. They're all sorta a guilty pleasure of mine, because it's fun to enjoy Prowl being a bit of a BAMF and Jazz being a bit of a damsel on occasion even if objectively I understand why it's not everyone's cup of tea. ("￣▽￣";)ゞ But the author definitely deserves credit for creative and entertaining premises and a really nice writing style!

Prowl is infamous for being a logical, nigh emotionaless thinker who's better at battle calculations than interpersonal relationships. How he was roped into taking care of the last survivor of Praxus is anyone's guess.

*Not clear from the summary, but the premise is essentially "what if Megatron got the matrix instead of OP" and how their pre-war lives would have to pan out for them to ultimately switch roles. Just a really fascinating, supremely well-done "what-if" fic, but also probably the weirdest one to put on this particular list, b/c JP turns into megatron/JP at the very, very end... but... I just kinda ignore that development since it happens in like almost literally in the last chapter and you can def read it as friendship up until that point... (¬⤙¬ ᵕ)

Pressing Jazz up against the wall, cramming him into corners, pinning him facedown over Prowl's desk. It didn't matter as long he could keep Jazz still.

I wanna talk about human kink too!

(1) Since female discharge contains acid sometimes, do you think some mechs would be able to taste it? Imagine their delight when they realize their human can taste differently every week.

(2) LINGERIE! Not only our 'armors' are super soft and flimsy, there are specific variations of it for kinky times. I forgot who wrote it but there is a headcanon of several mechs would totally use their human's clothe to jerk off with and Optimus was included in that list 👀

I absolutely think so! Considering that the few things Cybertronians do eat tend to be metallic/acidic I can definitely see more than a few of them likening the taste to familiar treats like rust sticks and various energon goodies. I picture a bot (Autobot or Decepticon, it doesn't matter) bringing their favorite little human to the oil house, passing them around between friends like a blunt rotation so everyone has the chance to get a taste of their pussy.

@callsign-relic also has the delightful Tasty AU if you're into the concept of Bots treating humans like a delicacy, if you're more into the "soft vore" style of things. Not my cup of tea, but we aren't out here to yuck anyone's yum!

As for stealing a human's clothes (specifically underwear or lingerie) that's honestly a really big fave for me as far as TF fics and headcanons go. I've read a really good fic with Ultra Magnus, and @robot-horde has a great short comic with Cliffjumper and their OC here on Pillowfort! (I'm full of good recommendations today!) Other bots I think may go so far as to steal your underwear besides Optimus, Ultra Magnus, and Cliffjumper include Rodimus, Frenzy, and TFA Prowl.

Protoforming - You want angst with a sort of bitter sweet end? Here it is.

Lost and Found - Megatron becomes a sparkling and Optimus decides its time to dad.

Carry on Wayward Son - TFA fic Optimus has his life pulled out from under him with the revelation that he's Megatron's lost son shoved in his face.

Heir of the Empire - TFA fic where the Allspark turns the earth team into sparklings. They are then raised as Cons. Years later, Optimus remembers.

Nor is he Early - My fav fic by far. A pure worldbuilding no war fic based around Optimus becoming Prime and needing to deal with the slag in a VERY interesting interactive manner.

The Perfect Song was requested as a bind during our local Renegade Exchange 2024 event. My giftee mentioned they liked quartos and also blue, and so I had the first inklings of a design. My giftee also mentioned they wouldn't mind additional gifts, so I decided to bind the rest of the series as a separate book, mostly because i thought it would look cool and then i would have a reason to make a case too (corral all those books together).

First up is The Perfect Song! I have been wanting to bind a chonky book, and while I didn't reach maximum chonk, The Perfect Song is a respectable size and satisfyingly hefty in the hand. This book is a variation of the bradel binding style, which supports a thicker book well. I ran with the musical theme: the endpapers have musical notations, the text breaks are a treble clef, and I used the written music for Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream as the background image for chapter titles. I chose the font for titles and dropcaps because it reminded me of a musical scale. The blue bookcloth is homemade using a faux-suede fabric: fuzzy texture!

The black and while endbands were meant to invoke a piano keyboard: I'm not quite sure I got there, but they look classy regardless!

Next is the rest of the series (which I called Accompaniment for the purposes of rounding up the series in a second book), and it uses all the same themes. I like the cohesive look, and really, why mess with a good thing? This is a much slimmer book, bound in a different style from The Perfect Song. This is a modified conservation pamphlet bind.

For both books I used HTV to put a treble clef on the cover, and for The Perfect Song I had enough room to title the spine as well.

I wanted to make cases for all three sets of books (one for my giftee, one for the author, and one for myself). I ran with the same theme and materials, so nothing surprising there, but I think the books in their cases look really snazzy!

I'm very satisfied with how these books turned out! And I am thrilled to be able to gift a copy to the author! Sharing fandom is wonderful experience for me, and I hope some fanart let's the author know how much I appreciate that they shared their stories.

#4: Flash Point by lastSaskatchewanPirate — MegOP, IDW(?), E, mating cycles/in heat breeding fic character study???? made me go fucking insane and feral for like a week

#3: Treading Water by goresque — Rung/Megatron/Rodimus, IDW, E, BDSM/Master/Daddy kink. NOT MEGOP???? I know, I know, but This fic, this fucking fic, holy fucking shit. I adooooore realistic BDSM. Honestly the entire series this fic is from is a gold mine, but this fic especially is one I treasure because it's messy and mistakes are made and people get hurt. You so rarely see people writing BDSM scenes going wrong and this one is done with such immense love and care.

#2: Waiting at Eternity's Edge by Silver_setting_sun — MegOP, IDW, E, set in a universe where both Megatron and Optimus are exiled from Cybertron in the aftermath of the war. This fic was a spiritual journey and a love letter of characterization that I hardly noticed the sex. Absolutely fascinating, rewarding, and fulfilling.

#1: Pay Unto Evil by lord_squiggletits (megatrons_mouth_laser) — MegOP, IDW (again, wow) & Shattered Glass, M, set in a universe where the Shattered Glass Autobots get swapped with IDW1's Autobots during the height of their respective wars. Literally one of the most gorgeous stories about healing, ethics, recovery, redemption, and restorative justice we've ever read.

Do you think Cybertronians would be more or less physically affectionate than humans, overall? On one hand, they have the whole EMF thing which acts as another sense. On the other, they're made of metal, and often are often fully armored, so what they can feel would be limited.

It's hard because of EM fields as well as frames with advanced capabilities of perception through sigma abilities and frame differences.

Honestly, it's just dependent on the interpretation.

Personally, I like it being a very culturally shaped behavior that can be driven by biology.

I like to think that Iacon is the birthplace of Cybertronian Functionism from its past. The Quintessons consolidated power there by using it as a massive land site and trading hub and most definitely take advantage of the associated history with the Thirteen Primes. So, it's believable that Iaconians have strict standards of moral behavior and would value rigid control of expressionisms. No surprise if they seem cold or impassive to mecha from other city-states.

On top of it, the Cybertronians that came to Earth had been shaped by warfare in an inconceivable scale to us. Even if friendly, the Autobots (and Decepticons) are under war-time footing and fully militarized. A lot of social and cultural mores will be reshaped as newer generations are raised into it.

(Begs the question if either of them have civilian counterparts? As well if there's been a cultural schism on the definition?)

Then there's the question of how to describe EM fields? Is it like a vibe check? Active and passive emotional exchange? Something that touches over senses as well? I do like the idea that EM fields act like chakra sense in Naruto. The fanfic that delve into it are amazing, like the vivid imagery from Umei_no_Mai and chesire_carroll on Ao3. Plus, it gives me the glee to hammer more lore, like really powerful sparks are capable of overwhelming others via field onslaught.

Also, soft bodies. I know it's a controversial one, but I really, really like the idea that Cybertronians do have a body of protoform with musculature under their armor.
