I'll probably write Azul meeting Silas sometime even if it loses, just bc of how much I love the idea. Especially because he's in the dark about Silas, u like the twins.
Okay lemme rant here
Like, the tweels already know Silas. Silas has (albeit very begrudgingly) come to their parents' various parties and (much less begrudgingly) given them presents for their birthdays. He's a key part of their parents' business, and you could almost describe him and their parents as odd friends.
With Azul, though, he's only seen the infamous Silas a couple of times. Once, as a small child, when Silas had to personally deliver his mother's meat shipment due to a staffing issue, and another few times when Silas was fetching Finn from school or appearing on those parents days.
Other than that, he only knows Silas through other people, his mother (who has much kinder words to say than other people), the twins (who just say cryptic creepy things to mess with him) and later on Finn, but that's much later on.
He's heard hundreds of different rumours, none of them pleasant, and while he's not so stupid as to believe them all, well, some rumours don't appear out of thin air. Not to mention, Silas is originally from the abyss, and the Coral Sea does not have many kind depictions of Abyss dwellers.
The vague memories he has of Silas are from a small child perspective hiding behind his mom while she talks to this looming, scarred, and terrifying shark.
And now Finn, his bf, just gives him a deadpan, expressionless stare and says. "My father wants to meet you."
Dear god how is he meant to react??? He's tried to hard to build this suave, confident persona and while he won't cry, he sure as hell is gonna be terrified.
Is he several times the size of Silas and can barely fit through their doorways in his merform? Yes. Is he still wracked with terror? Also yes
Tagging: @distant-velleity @theleechyskrunkly @jovieinramshackle @cyanide-latte @the-banana-0verlord for scrambled Azul thoughts

I just received this beautiful sketch from @arashimatoi as a small extra because I waited so long for one of my commissions :)
She really didn't have to do that for me and I'm thankful for her kindness. ^w^

Chapter 5: I Want the Good Times Back
It wasn't an unusual sight by any means.
Proteus had grown used to Cowrie not being in her room when he did his morning rounds. However, when the sharp-eyed ray merman asked around, no one had seen the young eelmaid come home the night before. Again, this wasn't too out of the ordinary but somehow, Proteus had a feeling...this time was different.
The Muraeni mansion was full of chatter thanks to the Don's five sons, all from his first wife. The five eel mermen were aged from their late to their early twenties, all very large and shades of grey with large yellow splotches as if they were underwater leopards. They were Roman Morays like their father and each one muscular, rough with various scars earned both in combat and from their father's wrath if and when it was needed. The five sons were seated in the dining hall eating their breakfast and talking amongst themselves until the Don himself entered the room, causing all of them to fall silent. Proteus arrived only seconds later with two large shark mermen flanking him and waiting to be addressed before he spoke.
Don Muraeni was a very built merman that, unlike his rival, had unflawed skin that spoke volumes about each scar that his sons bore in his place. He had a permanent unimpressed scowl on his face that rarely softened, especially not in the presence of his children. He was cold and utilitarian at the best of times with cloudy grey locks he kept perfectly in place and icy pale blue eyes to match his demeanor. Cowrie was the only one of his children with an actual name and that was only because her mother insisted on naming her. His sons were merely called by the numbered day they were born on. Fortunately for them, none of them were born on the same number. The Don silently swam into the room and sat at the head of the table where he was quickly served his meal by the waiting staff. He looked around the table, mentally counting each of his children, and realized that one was missing.
"Proteus...where is my daughter?" his voice had a smooth, earthen quality to it, like a crackling campfire without the warmth.
"It doesn't seem like Miss Cowrie came home last night, sir." the ray answered calmly with a bit of a glint in his eye, "I was going to go the Cove and ask Miss Luna if she had seen her sister-"
"Don't bother Luna too much," the Don's voice turned gruff, "I'm having her stay at the Cove the next few nights to get her ready. Luna's especially valuable and fresh right now. She needs to stay that way for her debut..." the Don stabbed the food on his plate with his gold fork before continuing, "Seven..."
The second oldest of the five sons sat at attention, awaiting his father's words.
"Go look for Cowrie and make sure to bring her home. I haven't given her any tasks lately because she's starting back at school soon...still, I've been spoiling her too much by letting her roam free. If she's being stubborn again, then put some pressure on her."
The son nodded and left the table to see to his task. The Don and his remaining sons continued to eat in silence for a long moment before he addressed Proteus again, "See to the Siren's Cove, make sure all my lures are in good shape. But don't disturb Luna, understood?"
"Of course, sir," Proteus replied with a deceitful grin on his face before leaving the hall with two of the sharks at his side. Once they were down the hall and out of earshot of the Don and his boys, Proteus looked to his cohorts, "Follow the boy. Better yet, find Miss Cowrie first. I have a hunch that sneaky little worm is up to no good. I think a bit of fear will do her some good..."
The two sharks were very large, larger than the eels, and even rougher looking. Their dark smiles bore even sharper and thicker-looking teeth. They could make quick work of the strongest opponents with ease but they were as strong as they were dumb. Not to mention easily influenced. In short, they were perfect thugs for Proteus and the Don to maneuver like vicious chess pieces.
"Bring her home, nice and broken in. But remember boys, don't leave any marks on her. Got it?"
Proteus had the look of a man lavishing in the finest of feasts as the two thugs followed after Seven.
-
Luna locked herself in her dressing room to get some space. It had been another long night and she wasn't in the mood to deal with the other sirens' two-faced prattle. She sighed as she rested her head on the vanity, her body and spirit drained from the use of her natural siren magic and voice. This was going to be her home for the next few nights...maybe even every single night until she graduated. The Don had already given her permission to make an appearance at Sacred Crown's opening ceremony to save face but she was expected to come right back afterward.
The elder Cerith daughter looked at the photograph attached to the mirror. It was the only picture she had of her parents before Cowrie was born before her mother had remarried Don Muraeni. She was just a tiny little eel in the picture but her mother looked almost exactly like she did now. This had been her mother's room too when Mrs. Cerith was the main diva. Her mother looked so much happier in the picture with Luna's father. Mr. Cerith had owed the Don a favor, a very unfortunate place to be. And well...Luna was very young when the Don had come to collect and had very little memories of the event. The most vivid was just how miserable her mother seemed to always be after her father disappeared.
Luna rubbed her eyes and sat up straight. There was no point in reminiscing. It wouldn't change a thing now, would it? No, of course not. If Luna's mother had a choice, this wouldn't be the life she would have wanted for her daughter. Luna knew this and that was enough. The siren quietly floated over to her closet and removed a piece of the floor to open up a hidden pit, suddenly having a desire to see a certain hidden treasure again. Inside was the portal keys that she had created to give herself some freedom even though it was always short-lived. Hidden amongst the keys was a picture of her and Floyd together. It was taken at Sacred Crown during the last event that brought them together. Like the picture of her parents, Luna looked a lot happier then.
She sighed, feeling a stab of guilt. Yes, she knew that she was being hypocritical. She meant it when she had told Cowrie that they both needed to end these connections with the Leech boys. She meant it, but it was easier said than done. Luna was very good at holding her cards close to her chest. She had to be. She wouldn't survive in this world without that ability. But Luna would be lying if she said that she didn't feel anything when faced with Floyd Leech and that disgruntled look of betrayal he didn't bother hiding in his eyes. Floyd was never one to hide his feelings about anything. It was honestly one of Luna's favorite things about him. Well that and his cute, boyish energy he had whenever he was in a good mood. She never had to guess how he was feeling. There were never any surprises save for one: Floyd never grew tired of her like she fully expect him to. Sure, he'd get burned out socially on occasion and would much rather go nap somewhere or do something else for a couple of hours. But the first sign of Luna's absence for more than 24 hours, Floyd Leech would zip back to her like a boomerang, needing her attention and affection and willing to do just about anything to get it. Any length of time they were physically apart didn't matter to him. As soon as he saw her, he was just as happy and thrilled as the time before that and the time before that. That never changed. He never changed...
It honestly boggled Luna's mind. She was never allowed to have an actual boyfriend or any connection of the sort but the Don not only allowed but encouraged her to use her wiles on boys - human, merfolk, didn't matter - as target practice. So Luna did and she did so often all through her jr. high and high school years. So much that she had gained quite the reputation, not that it mattered. But whether she used enchantments or not, the end result was always the same: they grew bored and they left. Once the boys figured out that Luna wasn't all that she seemed or that she wasn't going to give them everything they wanted, that this was all just a game, they were gone. No strings attached. Luna knew it, the boys probably knew it too, and even Floyd knew it...and yet, he was the one that always came back. Floyd Leech was the one that always wanted her around and didn't expect Luna to change even though the basis of their relationship was very shallow and destined to not last for either of them. At least that's what they agreed upon in the beginning, right? They were just having fun. Nothing serious. So why did he have to look at her like that? Like some kicked, abandoned puppy that refused to stop waiting for her to return home?
Focus, Luna mentally snapped to herself as she hid the photo away again, this for the best for both of you, he'll understand that eventually! ...Luna couldn't fully convince herself. If she were to be fully honest with herself, she missed Floyd terribly. She missed his kisses, his snug, sweet embraces, his smile, the way he'd say her name like it was the sweetest song. Behind closed doors, her heart ached. She'd sigh and smile at Floyd's big grin frozen inside that photographed memory like it was the most precious treasure in the world. Ugh, Luna cringed at how sappy it all was...but it was true. She even missed Jade and Azul. She missed being able to relax and just be around them with her sister and Elise, safe and happy inside that bubble of bliss. Luna Cerith missed her life before this god-awful summer.
Luna had closed her closet just in time for a knock to come to her door. The siren frowned and unlocked the door when she heard Proteus' voice. She was beyond eager to deal with his disruption as quickly as possible. Luna didn't bother welcoming the dubious ray merman into her room but stood her ground in the doorway, looking him up and down like the inconvenience he was.
"What do you want, Proteus?" she asked coldly.
His smile made her skin crawl, "Miss Luna, good morning. Pardon the intrusion but it's just that the Don has sent me to check up on all of his precious songbirds. You, especially."
"I am alive and well as you can see. You can go." Luna was about to close the door in his face when Proteus suddenly slammed his hand against it, making it almost impossible to budge.
"One last thing, my dear Luna," his voice dripped with an unsettling purr, "it's about your sister, Miss Cowrie. She didn't come home last night, I'm afraid...you wouldn't know anything about the poor child's whereabouts would you?"
Luna held a neutral expression even though her mind was running a mile a minute, "My sister has always been a free spirit, Proteus. Especially as she's gotten older. I imagine she stayed with a friend or found some other reasonable alternative to coming home as she's done several times before...or have you not noticed with all of your lurking about how much she detests being in that house when I'm not there?"
The electric ray carefully narrowed his crimson eyes at the siren, his grin still intact, "Indeed I have. I think, perhaps, her father has been a bit too lenient with her. Why ever since losing her dear mother, Miss Cowrie has become too willful. It's no wonder she clings to you so. Not only are you her sister, Miss Luna, but you look so much like the late mistress...such a beauty. It's a real shame what happened to her...and your father, I might add. The poor fool."
Luna visibly pulled away and started to bare her sharp teeth at Proteus as he attempted to touch her face. Her fins bristled and stood on their ends as she glared pure venom straight into him, "You have a lot of nerve playing like you had no hand in what happened to my parents, you gutless bastard."
Proteus was barely phased if at all. He just chuckled dryly, "My, my what a temper. I can see why the Don puts so much stock in you, Miss Luna. Such a beautiful face, a womanly figure, and fiery spirit that can devastate the most cold-blooded men among us-"
His disgusting spiel was interrupted by Luna's claws leaving stinging scratch marks across his cheek, "Piss off before I start taking chunks out of you!"
The ray merman just smiled as her door slammed in his face and the lock was bolted. It was adorable how she thought such a flimsy barrier could keep her safe from him. He'd allow it for now if only to stay within his boss's good graces. He was a patient hunter after all...and these girls were too much fun.
On the other side of the door, Luna held a hand to her mouth to hold back her frustrated sobs. She wouldn't give that creepy asshole the satisfaction of hearing her cry. Instead, Luna swallowed her distress and rushed back to her closet. She had an idea where Cowrie was hiding but only had limited time to find her.
-
"Ellie! Come on! You have to see this place!"
Elise smiled at Cowrie's bright mood as the younger eelmaid beckoned her out of the grotto. In the morning light, the Octavinelle seascape looked absolutely gorgeous with its colorful coral reefs and rock formations. The best part? They had the whole place to themselves to swim and explore to their heart's content. Azul and the twins were currently sitting in the Mostro Lounge, forming a game plan for the following weeks. In the meantime, Cowrie was more than ready to take a swim with Elise, who was no longer in danger of drowning. The princess swam after her much faster companion as she was led around, showing her every single nook and cranny. Obviously, Cowrie had spent a lot of borrowed time in these waters.
"See that spot over there?" Cowrie was pointing to what looked like a seaweed forest, "that's the best place to take a nap, hide, or to get some lovey-dovey privacy apparently. At least that's what Luna tells me," Cowrie snorted at that last bit. Elise couldn't help but notice that Cowrie seemed to be in a much more chipper mood than usual for some reason. The princess grinned as her curiosity burned.
"Speaking of making out, that's the same window I saw Reiny and Riddy kissing in that one time," Cowrie pointed to the glass pane to an empty nook within the Mostro Lounge.  Cowrie zipped ahead, still rambling on about something else, but Elise saw the three boys sitting in a booth, talking in another window as she swam by. Jade noticed the female octomermaid and gave her a friendly wave which she returned. Jade seemed to be in good spirits too today...interesting. She paused in the water and pointed towards Cowrie with one of her tentacles while giving Jade a questioning look. There was a split second of surprise before Jade's stoic, closed-eyed grin returned to his face. Aha. Elise gave him a playful smile before swimming away. Judging from the enthusiastic wag of Cowrie's tail and the spark in her eyes, Elise had a hunch that maybe the 'some reason' was actually a 'someone'.
"Jade, are you listening?" Azul's annoyed tone pulled the eel's attention back to the conversation, "As I was saying, I checked the shell...it's empty."
Azul was holding a palm-sized nautilus seashell that he had sealed Rielle's voice in once they formed the original contract. The octopus boy seemed deeply frustrated and confused. Not to mention, extremely tired.
"Azul, you've been brooding over this conundrum for the past few nights now. Wouldn't it be wise to rest?" Jade seemed genuinely concerned which Azul normally appreciated but in his current state, it only heightened his irritation at the whole situation.
"How can I rest when none of this makes any sense?!" he groaned, "If Her Highness really switched places with that stupid prince then shouldn't her voice be stored inside this shell like his was before?! And look at this, the wording hasn't changed at all..."
Azul gestured to the physical contract that Rielle had signed laid out before them. The parchment seemed dulled, worn, and muted as if every drop of magic had been sucked out of it. But Azul was correct: the twins read over it and every detail remained the same down to the wording to Rielle's post signature. The eels exchanged a look before Floyd let out a bored sigh. He leaned into the booth's plush material as he casually let his theory loose.
"Cowrie-chan was able to let Octi-chan talk with her voice before. It seems like she still has her voice but it's locked up inside. Luna..." it took Floyd an awkward minute to say Luna's name naturally, "Luna said something about the magic turning into a curse, right? Curses aren't really my forte but...I dunno...maybe it's like old magic from back in the day."
Jade felt a bit of pride in his brother's cleverness, seeing that he could very well be onto something, "Her kissing Rielle seemed to be part of the catalyst. Maybe  another kiss could break this curse."
It was pretty damn trite but Azul dug through the pile of papers until he found the exact passage he found earlier, " 'True Love's Kiss' did seem to be the answer to many old spells and curses. If we look at history, the mermaid princess who fell in love with a human prince is a good example. I based Rielle's request on the same formula: three days to get a kiss from his beloved...but there's only one problem. Her Highness is in love with Prince  Rielle and he flat out rejected her."
All three boys sighed in frustration. Azul was exhausted to the core but even so, he felt cold dread creep in when he weighed his options. He had a myriad of potions and counterspells at the ready with no guarantee any of them would work. Or...he had his sea witch grandmother on speed dial with the guarantee of a much higher success rate. His mother had already threatened to go over his head and reach out to her mother to take on the task of fixing Azul's mistake. It wasn't a  terrible idea just...Azul was one proud octopus. He absolutely abhorred failure, especially accepting it before he barely got started! Before he forgot, Azul pulled out a vial of bright blue liquid and set it on the table between the three of them.
"I can at least give Her Highness this dry land potion so she can leave the water when needed..."
Floyd suddenly shot out an idea that seemed both ludicrous and tempting: "What if Octi-chan just stayed a mermaid? Her stupid family doesn't seem like they care enough to look for her...she could be happier down here with us."
Azul could definitely see the truth and merit of the twin's words but Jade said his peace for him.
"That's not for us to decide, Floyd. Miss Elise never asked to become a mermaid in the first place," Jade silently agreed with his brother but still believed in his words. Elise was a person caught up in a precarious situation, not a stray animal for them to adopt.
Floyd just pouted as his mood quickly shifted into the grumpy side of the spectrum, "Ehhh...but look at her!"
Elise and Cowrie could be seen outside the window, swimming about. Elise did look like she was enjoying herself, almost naturally as if she had never been anything or anywhere else in her life. This was actually the most they had seen her smile since they found her in distress days ago. Cowrie looked thrilled to have a new swimming buddy. It was tempting but Azul knew better.
"She doesn't belong down here. She's a human, not a mermaid. A princess of the surface...not some squishy, awkward, lame octopus."
The sharp teasing looks the twins were suddenly giving him didn't escape Azul's notice.
"She's definitely not an awkward or lame octopus...or were you talking about yourself, Azul? Even after all this time? My, my... " Jade snickered to himself.
"You have a problem," Floyd stated bluntly, ruffling Azul's gills, "You were so cute and round when we were little guppies~"
"You two be quiet!" Azul huffed, "Go get her so we can make sure this potion works properly!"
-
Elise was enjoying the easy-going setting with her dear friend. If nothing else, it helped distract her from the lingering ache in her chest.  With everything going on, this tiny bit of reprieve felt like a sweet balm. Not just Rielle's rejection but her family...no, she didn't want to think about it. Cowrie noticed the sadness slowly creep back into the princess' jewel-colored eyes and wrapped her up in her tail like a hug, "Hey Ellie...you ok?"
The princess put on her best smile and nodded. Voice or no voice, it was a weak display and the girls both knew it. Cowrie grabbed her friend's hand and guided her back to the grotto, "I wanna show you something. It's not a happy memory but it's important."
Once they were inside the cave, Cowrie swam high up to one of the tallest ledges and grabbed a small framed picture. She placed it in Elise's hands with a small nostalgic smile, "Since Luna and I are telling you our secrets: we have something in common. This is our mama...she's gone too, like your mama."
The eel mermaid in the picture looked like a more mature version of Luna: she had the same eyes, the same warm coloring, everything. In her arms was a tiny baby Cowrie and a young Luna at her side. Elise felt a rush of both warm affection for this woman she never met and heartache for her two friends. She gave Cowrie a questioning look that said 'What happened to her?' "I never met Luna's papa. He was gone long before I was even around but...well, Luna doesn't really like to talk about it. But my papa made sure that he wasn't in the way so to speak. I think Proteus had something to do with it. He's this creepy electric ray merman and Papa's right hand. If my brothers don't carry out Papa's wishes, Proteus usually does. He's a real cruel bastard. I was pretty young when Mama left but...I don't think she did it willingly."
Elise felt sick just hearing this. Seeing Cowrie look so unnerved was something that just didn't happen. Not in all the years that she knew her. It made Elise realize just how little she really understood about the Cerith sisters' life under the sea. She felt like such an outsider but that didn't matter, not now. Cowrie was shaken back to reality as she felt Elise wrap her arms and tentacles around her petite body in a double hug. The younger mermaid rested her head on Elise's shoulder, letting her gently pet her hair like a second big sister. It felt so nice. Cowrie didn't even bother calling out Jade and Floyd on lurking in the entryway, wanting the moment to last a bit longer. The twins patiently hung back, letting the girls have their time after accidentally overhearing Cowrie's story.
Floyd frowned at this sad revelation and all it revealed: not only was the Muraeni house even worse than their father had told them but did this mean that Luna was an orphan on top of being used like some prized show horse? He felt his blood boil as he pulled away to wait outside for Jade and the girls. Each little piece of history Floyd heard from the two sisters just continued to piss him off. His brother didn't stop him from leaving but instead gently cleared his throat after giving the girls another minute.
"Cowrie, Miss Elise..."
Cowrie didn't hide her affection for Jade in front of Elise which caught him off guard. The princess smiled excitedly for the two of them as Cowrie swam right up to Jade and planted a playful kiss on his lips before nuzzling her cheek against his jawline. It wasn't that Jade didn't enjoy it, quite the opposite, it was just that Jade wasn't nearly as open with his feelings or affections as his brother was. Or Cowrie for that matter. It would take some getting used to but that didn't stop the soft grin from spreading on Jade's face.
"Azul has prepared a dry land potion for you, princess," Jade continued after returning the small female eel's affections that practically had him purring, "we need to make sure it works."
Elise noticed that Floyd wasn't with him and looked concerned. Jade looked back to Floyd's irritated form that had his back to them just outside the grotto, "He's a bit moody today, I'm afraid...he has a lot on his mind."
Cowrie shared a look with her new mate but said nothing before leaving the grotto. Jade followed behind Elise, his instincts taking over and telling him to protect to the two girls even though he logically knew there weren't any threats present in these waters. Floyd lead the girls back without a word. Elise noticed how his fins seemed to be stiff and tense as if he were holding something back. It was a silent swim that allowed Elise to feel various emotions emitting from the three eels. It made her heart feel a bit heavy and a bit anxious. Like somewhere on the horizon, a storm was brewing.
Azul was waiting for the four of them on a landing platform above the entry pool they returned to. The twins and Cowrie immediately reverted back to their clothed human forms as soon as they exited the water. Elise waited patiently, clinging to the side of the pool with her tentacles with her head and shoulders poking out of the water. Floyd and Jade offered the princess their hands to hoist her out of the water and onto the tiled floor with a wet plop as Azul prepared the vial. He extended it to Cowrie after removing the stopper and she placed one of her fangs along the edge. A single drop of pale green liquid dripped into the potion, changing its color to a strange teal. Azul had a satisfied grin on his face as he observed the reaction.
"Your clever companions keep surprising me, Your Highness. Cowrie here has a venomous bite that can render her targets paralyzed or even put them in a coma depending on how much of her toxin is injected into them. However, she told me that a single drop has a harmless, muscle relaxing quality to it. A perfect added ingredient to a dry land potion for first-time users."
Cowrie giggled proudly, "Luna is a traditional siren that can manipulate the heart and pheromones with her songs. I, however, am a sleeper siren: I can put you to sleep peacefully with my songs or knock you out with my bite. Or kill you if I use enough venom."
Elise gave Cowrie an incredulous look as even her tentacles seemed to question the dubious claim.
"No no I haven't actually killed anyone...yet."
Before Elise could think too much about the implied possibilities, Cowrie passed the vial to her, "Drink up, Ellie!"
Did it taste...sour? Tangy? The flavor was hard to pin down but Elise felt a warm tingle flow all through her body as suddenly her skin turned lighter as the tentacles started to shrink back into her. In a matter of seconds, Elise had become human again. Before she could celebrate, Elise started to panic as her now two legs started to wobble throwing her off balance. Fortunately, the twins were quick to catch her back she fell back into the pool.
"It may take some getting used to, even for someone who was born a human, to begin with, Your Highness," Azul started looking her up and down, pleased with his work, "this potion isn't strong enough to change you back into a human completely but it's the basic formula that many merfolk use to visit the surface. As long as you're on land, you'll appear human."
Elise looked at her reflection in the water's surface and was a bit confused: she was a human again but her eyes and hair were still the same colors they had become after turning into a mermaid and the dress she was wearing was the same one she had on before but instead of sky blue, it was now a deep, alluring purple. What did these changes mean? Also, was it her imagination, or was her skin way softer and silkier now?
"You're a mermaid now, Ellie, your body - even in human form - is going to be different," Cowrie seemed to read her friend's expressions well enough to answer her thoughts, "honestly I wouldn't be surprised if a few other things changed too."
"Merfolk, especially the more animalistic ones like us, have instincts and other qualities that merfolk like Rielle do not," Jade explained, "I'm very curious to see how yours develop in time, dear princess." Jade was looking at Elise with the same curious affection that he gave his mushroom gardens. It was both endearing and somewhat unnerving. The boy octopus cleared his throat with a very pronounced 'AHEM' before casually putting himself between Jade and Elise.
"Come inside away from the water, Your Highness. We don't want you to catch a cold."
The twins were too amused by Azul's not-so-subtle attempts at chivalry to correct him in front of the lady. At least until they saw the goosebumps on Elise's now human skin.  They had forgotten how much more sensitive to the cold human bodies were.
-
Walking on two legs came back pretty quickly but even so, Elise still had this feeling that she was wearing a disguise instead of actually being in her true form. It felt strange and disorienting. The princess was beginning to wonder what was her 'real' form? Logically, yes she was well aware that she was a human. But physically? The lines were a lot more blurry.  Her mind kept buzzing like a beehive as she sat in the Mostro Lounge, wrapped in a thick blanket taken from Azul's room, and gave Jade a grin when he set a cup of hot tea down in front of her. The aroma of the tea and the smell of Azul's cologne on the blanket made Elise sigh and her thoughts ease up to a more serene state. Strange bodies aside, this atmosphere right now felt very comfortable. Speaking of her host...Azul's tired state did not escape her notice. The boy looked as exhausted as he did determined. He was working so hard to try and help her. He even locked himself in his office again as soon as they returned to the Lounge. There didn't seem to be much Elise herself could do right now. But really, when did that ever stop her?
She took a second teacup from Jade and pointed to the VIP room doors. Jade's nod confirmed that's where Elise needed to go and he grinned as he watched her slide out of the booth and set off towards her destination. There wasn't an answer when Elise knocked on the door at first so the princess took the liberty of carefully opening the door to be met with an unusual sight: Azul was currently passed out on one of the couches. He had always been so on point and together any other time Elise had been in the charming boy's presence so seeing him so unguarded and vulnerable was...awfully cute? Was that even the right word? The soft exhale of Azul's sleeping breath made Elise silently giggle as she quietly entered the room and set the teacup on his desk. She almost felt bad for intruding. Almost. But at the same time, well, he clearly needed some help.
The princess' caretaker nature immediately kicked in as she leaned down to remove Azul's shoes. It wouldn't do to let him get sore feet just because the poor thing was too tired to take them off himself. And his glasses. Definitely couldn't let him sleep in those. Azul had to be a heavy sleeper. He didn't even flinch as Elise quietly took care of him. The only time he did was when the princess very gently brushed a lock of his silvery hair away from his face and even then, Azul seemed to sigh in his sleep and lean into her touch a bit. The act made Elise's pulse jump as if she had just had the same encounter with a wild beast.
"Tsk, Azul has a sweet princess looking out for him and he doesn't even know it," Floyd murmured quietly from the doorway, making Elise suddenly jump up in surprise.
The twins and Cowrie had watched the whole scene from the doorway with amused glints in their eyes. Elise pressed a finger to her lips, asking them to be quiet as she placed the blanket over the sleeping Azul. Good grief, it was an adorable sight. The lucky punk... Floyd mentally grumbled, feeling his eyebrow twitch.
"Ellie~" Cowrie whispered and beckoned the princess over to her, "I need to get back to the Coral Sea before my family gets too suspicious. Jay Jay and Floy Floy are coming with me for a bit...but why don't you stay here and look after Azuzu until he wakes up."
Elise gave the three eels a smile and thumbs up. Azul would definitely be in good hands. Cowrie gave her best friend a tight hug and promised her they'd come back for them soon enough.
'Be careful' Elise mouthed to the three of them as they dipped back into the pool at the landing.
"Take care of Azul for us, Miss Elise."
"Feel free to smack him around if he gets frisky with ya~" that earned Floyd a splash of water in his mischievous face. Elise shook the remaining water droplets from her hand before shooing him away.

The day was peaceful enough as Mama Ashengrotto welcomed her regulars and some new faces as well with a warm smile on her face. It was another early afternoon in the Leviathan Club that promised smooth sailing...or at least it would have been if her mother's intuition wasn't prickling in the back of her mind. She hadn't seen hide nor hair of the Leech brothers or her son since yesterday. Nor had she seen little Cowrie or the princess. She assumed they were all still together. "As long as they're together, it should be fine," the mother mumbled to herself as she straightened up some more menus with one tentacle while more fixed the centerpieces on the surrounding tables. It was then that another familiar face came through the door.
"Oh, Miss Luna Cerith. Welcome, my dear. Is everything alright, sweetheart?"
Luna looked about the room anxiously, obviously looking for someone, before giving the hostess a tentative grin, "Good morning, Mrs. Ashengrotto. I'm so sorry to suddenly burst in like this but...it's Cowrie. Have you seen her?"
"Ah, your sister. I'm afraid not. But don't worry your pretty head, dear. She's with my boys and that lovely princess friend of yours."
That brought some relief but Luna still felt a prick of irritation with her reckless baby sister, "I see. Thank you. I can't stay long but thank you for looking out for my sister. I know she can be a handful."
Mama Ashengrotto gave a hearty laugh, "Oh most definitely. Cowrie is a spirited one which is just fine with me! But...are you sure you're alright, sweetheart? You look jumpier than a school of plankton during the whale migration."
"Oh, it's just-"
Luna cut herself off with a gasp as two large, bulky figures swam by the nearby windows. The mother octopus was no stranger to how things worked around town and knew very well which brutes worked for which boss. And those two definitely were not with the Leech Family.
"Go into the kitchens, dear. Wait for me to come get you. If anyone questions you, you tell them Mama told you to stay put." Mama Ashengrotto's voice was calm but firm. Luna gave a quick thank you before quickly swimming away. The two sharks circled the establishment from the outside once before coming inside where the hostess was waiting for them.
"Welcome, gentlemen. Table for two or are you expecting company?" The question was loaded in spite of the woman's inviting tone.
The first shark, the one missing an eye, grunted and sniffed at the air around Mama Ashengrotto, picking up on something. The woman raised a brow at this behavior before rapping a menu on his large nose, "Sir, I run a respectable business here where manners are mandatory, please and thank you."
The rough merman jerked his face back with a snarl, "We're looking for the Muraeni girl. It smells like the other one has been here though...where is she?"
If the hostess was intimidated, it didn't show in the slightest, "Need I repeat myself, sirs? Manners. are. MANDATORY. If you have nothing better to do than come sniffing around, literally or metaphorically, my restaurant to harass my staff and guests then I'm going to have to insist you show yourselves the door. I'll make it easy for you, it's right there."
Two of her sassy tentacles pointed to the front door just behind the thugs without so much as a bat of an eyelash. When the sharks didn't budge, Mama Ashengrotto sighed in exasperation.
"See here, you two. Muraeni, Leech, whatever - this is neutral territory. Your boss, no matter how dreadful, has no power here and I am not obligated to submit to his or your whims. So. For the last time, OUT."
The gruff duo narrowed their eyes and shared a look before finally turning to go without another word. The hostess didn't budge until she was sure they were gone. She found Luna sitting in a secluded corner, patiently waiting as she was instructed, and gave the shaken girl a warm smile, "You're safe now, my dear. They're gone."
-
Cowrie and the twins emerged from the same back alley that had disappeared into the night before. Cowrie looked around the corner and in every cranny, making sure the coast was clear before handing the portal key over to Jade. "Hold on to this so you can get back to Azuzu and Ellie. I'll get a spare from Luna later and catch up with you guys."
"What about Luna...?" Floyd knew what he was asking but with his arms crossed and furrowed brow, he didn't look too sure. Cowrie swam up to his eye level and gave him a reassuring smile.
"You gotta be patient a bit longer, Floy Floy. That part's going to be a bit tricky. But I need you to trust me, ok?"
She took his huff as a confirmation and gave him a friendly nuzzle. Patience was definitely not a strong point for Floyd Leech but damn it he was trying! Cowrie nearly jumped out of her stripes when a back door to the Leviathan Club suddenly slammed open.
"Oh Cowrie, there you are!" a random merman in a kitchen uniform was throwing out some trash, "Mama Ashengrotto's been looking for ya! Apparently, a couple of others have been too."
She felt ice pierce her bones at this news, "...what did these 'others' look like?"
-
Soft music brushed against Azul's ears as he finally stirred awake. The melody seemed oddly familiar and homey. His deep steel-blue eyes slowly opened towards the source: the music box he had purchased from Elise's silent festival auction was sitting on the coffee table, surrounded by more of his notes and books, open and playing the soothing lullaby. In its center were two figures spinning and 'dancing' together in time to the music. Azul looked across the way to the other couch. Elise was curled up on her side asleep and softly breathing. The princess looked too serene to be real at first. It wasn't until she gently stirred awake herself and gave the boy a sleepy smile. Her pink lips parted and mouthed the words:
'Good morning.'

character: azul ashengrotto, twst
contains: oc used as main character - not an x reader, fluff, male main character
view the oc here. for basics, he's more or less a black panther beastman (referred to as hybrid, as they are different things, but similar) named yuujirou. you can read the fanfic i'm writing for him here (quotev) or here (ao3).
for a random event - see link here for request rules and here for the masterlist
“How did you even get sick?” Azul sighs, watching the panther in front of him act an absolute fool as he mumbles something about chasing after his cub in the rain. Grim causing more trouble, surely. “You look distasteful. Come here.”
It’s with a heavy knit in his brow that the octo-mer wraps Yuujirou in a blanket, huffing and puffing the whole way, nothing but worried scoldings leaving his mouth.
It’s funny, the panther thinks, how Azul tries so hard to cover up his care with nagging. It's not effective in the least, so it's really just entertaining to watch him splutter over himself and become increasingly less composed.
“Now, go lay right there,” He references the couch in his office, trying futilely to will his cheeks not to go red as Yuujirou starts purring.
“And I’ll keep taking care of you. You’re lucky you have the Tweels wrapped around your finger, truly… Otherwise I wouldn't even consider this, you know. So troublesome...”
“Mmph.” That was a lie, but Yuuji sounds his agreement anyways.
He collapses onto the couch without a care in the world, blearily looking back at the octopus, smiling softly when he saw how red he was. “Thanks, ‘Zul… 's sweet.”
That’s all it takes for Azul to practically combust, sentences starting and stopping all at once before he ultimately decides to hurriedly wave the hybrid off with a sound reminiscent to a dying whale as he ran off to go find the Tweels and get their assistance with taking care of Yuujirou.
It seemed he was even more forthcoming when sick, unfortunately for Azul. Hopefully the eels would take over caring for him until Azul was functioning again.

Can I please request a reader that has been so traumatised by what’s happened in the Scarabia book that they actively avoid the entire dorm and have Ace and Deuce as their guard dogs (I love those two and I really love how you wrote them as the readers protective besties during the Malleus break up fic). Like how would Kalim, Jamil and Adeuce react to that?
I find it really cathartic when I read fics that have the characters feeling guilty after what they put the reader through whilst the reader is getting support from their friends.
(Something I’m really salty about in twst is how no one ever holds the overblots accountable for what they’ve done. I full on agreed with Ace when he told Riddle that crying wasn’t going to erase all that he did before the overblot and I literally fell in love with him when he punched Riddle after he insulted us/Yuu/the player. I understand that those boys are traumatised and are in desperate need of therapy and overblotting was the only way for their problems to be solved but the treatment they inflicted on Yuu/us was downright hellish. Azul made us homeless and tore us away from the only family/comfort we had in twst (the ghosts) and then sent the tweels to terrorise us in our attempts to reclaim said home and free our friends from servitude; Jamil kidnapped us, hypnotised us, locked us up in a room against our will, isolated us from Adeuce and took away any contact we had with them, forced us on long marches in the dessert and turned a blind eye to our clear suffering during that time; Vil acted like a literal demon to not only us (and then almost made my Deucey cry) but everyone else as well and that was before he decided to try to murder an innocent teenager. Like why does no one understand just how much this can damage an actual child who has no magic and has been stripped from their home and family?)
Reader Terrified of Scarabia After Jamil’s Overblot
TW: PTSD; Mental Breakdown; Disassociation; Mentions of Abuse; Kalim and Jamil are tragic
Info: Ace, Deuce x Reader (platonic or romantic); Kalim, Grim x Reader (platonic); Jamil and Reader (neutral)
🍓I love requests like this tbh. My own OC sorta has her own grapplings with this stuff that I like to touch upon, and I’m excited I get the chance to talk about it here :) THIS IS LONG AS HELL BTW(like this intro here lol). I had a lot of fun writing it :))) I added a cute, shorter little grim part, because our little guy deserves more lovin’ than he gets. I also decided to do a cute little (read: long) intro, and then head cannons since you didn’t specify for either. I hope you enjoy this style, and I’m sorry for the wait <3
You had been through… a lot in your time at Night Raven College. Being thrown into a completely different world would’ve been enough, but it seems that the great seven thought you needed some extra troubles. You weren’t sure how you could’ve encored their wrath, but you were, and you were chugging along despite it all.
First was the attack from the phantom in the mines — something that should’ve been foreshadowing for what was to come. You didn’t even do anything to be in this position. It was Ace Grim and Deuce, but you got dragged into it all because you were “Grim’s keeper.” You managed to befriend Ace and Deuce though, so it wasn’t so bad.
Second was Riddle with his unending temper and strict rules. Despite everything telling you to just stay out of it, your good-natured heart just couldn’t stop you from helping Ace and Deuce. Nearly dying in the process, you managed to help Riddle and made newfound friends in Heartslabyul.
Third came Leona, the selfish, stuck-up, lazy no-good prince of the Savannah. You knew he was trouble from the start, and you wanted nothing to do with him or his little lackey Ruggie. Then he hurt Trey, and you couldn’t stand by while he reigned terror on the school. He was a favorable ally to gain in the end, so you could dismiss his actions so long as he kept in his lane.
Fourth was Azul, another student you figured would cause you trouble. With the extra scary Jade and Floyd always tailing him, and that too buttery sweet voice of his, you were determined to keep your distance. Again, however, your friends were in trouble and you couldn’t help but help them. Azul was a broken person, and you could sympathize with his struggles. He even gave you a job at the lounge to help with funding yourself, so he couldn’t be all that bad.
You’d come to dislike the other house wardens out of principle. A pattern had emerged among them, and you weren’t going to fall victim to another horrific overblot. You still had suction cup-shaped bruises on your arm from Azul’s breakdown. Leona had given you more than just a nasty burn from the scalding hot whirlwind of sand he conjured up. The scars Riddle left behind on your face and arms were healed, but they still ached when you touched them. All painful reminders that you could not truly trust anyone here, that anyone could lose control of themselves and hurt you. Yet…
When you met Jamil in the kitchen, he seemed so kind to both you and Grim. He seemed so genuine and honest. Maybe it was wishful thinking, or maybe it was you missing your friends, but you wanted to trust him despite your gut feeling to be distrustful. Could everyone here really be that bad? Certainly not. Ace Deuce and Jack went here as well… so surely… surely…
The alarm bells didn’t ring at all during the dinner, and Kalim — despite everything you’ve been through — seemed so nice, if not a little overbearing. You could see the tiredness on Jamil's face, and you had the kindness in your heart to express your sympathies. And oh, Jamil so humbly assured you that he was fine. Filling your head with little half-truths and ideas that Kalim had been overworking not only him but the other students. That he had been acting “off” as of late.
You saw Kalim’s sudden shifts in personality. How he would be so sweet, so kind and soft. How he made sure you were enjoying yourself, made sure you ate to your heart's content, made sure you were comfortable in your uniform and your sleeping quarters. Then he would be yelling at everyone, demanding unspeakable exercises and work.
If Ace were there with you, he would’ve called bullshit. Still, you trusted Jamil to start. You actually believed he was kind and had good intentions. You believed that Kalim was the real evil here.
Then he wouldn’t let you and Grim leave, and the students were suddenly so aggressive toward you. He took everything you had and stripped you of your dignity and pride until there was nothing left but fight.
Truly, you didn’t realize it was him that was the issue until he was over-blotting in front of your eyes. It wasn’t an unusual sight to you at that point, you’d defeated multiple overblots and befriended these people. You don’t know what it was. The way you’d trusted him. The fact that you felt truly alone without Ace and Deuce. This one broke you…
You just didn’t feel a damn thing after he was saved. You felt no pity, no joy, no relief. Absolutely nothing, an empty void in your chest. Even as everyone around you celebrated, there was nothing. You stood watching everyone parade around with glee blankly, unable to speak to anyone around you. Just listening to the voices that had begun to mesh together.
You didn’t show anything until Ace and Deuce showed up. Something about their faces, the way they were looking over you, the way they seemed so scared for your wellbeing… it made you cry. It made you cry and cry and cry until you couldn’t make any noise and then you cried some more. They had to drag you away from everyone because you just couldn’t quite stand upright when Deuce would try to get you to walk away with him…
The days after were blurry. You remained holed up in your dorm, unable to really move from your bed. Ace and Deuce stayed in their own separate room next to yours. You could hear them talking through the walls about how worried they were about you, how angry they were at Jamil, how angry they were at themselves for not getting there in time to help you. If you’d had the energy, you would’ve scolded them for being so hard on themselves, but you could hardly speak in the first place.
They cared for you as best as they could. Deuce attempted to cook the recipes Trey sent him over magicam, making sure you ate and stayed hydrated. Occasionally you’d hear Azul downstairs, and Deuce would give you something nice from the Monstrolounge — free of charge, he promised. You could tell that he wasn’t sleeping much in his worry over you.
Grim remained at your side as loyal as a dog and boasting that he’d keep you safe, but you knew he was scared too. He proclaimed that he would keep you safe, but you could feel him trembling at every sudden noise. You had to comfort him from the horrific nightmares he was having. That was okay, though, he was family and you were his.
Ace was the only one who really kicked your ass into gear. He’d tug you out of bed and into the shower as people began to return from winter break. Made you go on walks around campus to show you that you were completely safe. Eventually, he’d been able to get you to visit Azul to thank him directly for his kindness. He wasn’t soft or gentle with you, that wasn’t in his character at all, but he made sure you felt safe enough to return to classes before they started.
They both worked hard to help you recover, but you were still so afraid…
Ace
-Ace isn’t exactly the most comforting person, and he never claimed to be.
-He’s not good at reassuring people, but he’s good at being honest, and if he was being honest he knew that you were safe around him and Deuce.
-He walks you to and from classes, spends most of his nights in your dorm doing whatever the hell you’d like him to do without complaint, distracts you when you’re freaking out, and most importantly keeps that snake as far away from you as possible.
-If he was being honest with himself, which was his whole thing, he didn’t really get your reaction to everything.
-You’ve all been through this before, it's textbook at this point. A guy does some shady shit, a guy gets caught doing said shady shit, a guy overblots, and you defeat a guy with the power of friendship. Boom. Done.
-He’d get it more if you were completely alone, but grim and the octanivelle freaks were there! Kalim too, and he’s always seemed pretty nice. Not the best company, sure, but still you had people helping you out.
-When he looks at your face and sees how tired you are, he forgets the logical stuff. All he can hear are those horrific sobs you let out when you saw him and how you nearly ripped his uniform in half with how tightly you were holding him and Deuce.
-If that was too much for him, he can’t imagine how badly it must’ve felt for you. How bad it must still feel.
-So screw what he thinks, he’s gotta make sure you’re taking care of yourself.
-He doesn’t ask you how you’re feeling, he knows it's not good. He focuses on keeping your mind off of everything that might trigger you.
-Reroutes your paths to classes to avoid Jamil and Kalim completely. Sure it’s longer and more annoying, but it's better than you going dead silent and shutting him and everyone else out again.
-He does everything in his power and you’re doing so well… and then the VDC happens.
-You’re given the title of manager and you’re forced to be around these people who terrify you.
-Vil won’t budge on anything and sevens Ace wishes Rook would let him try out a little target practice with the (illegal) bow and arrows he’s got in his room.
-He keeps himself between you and Jamil at all costs. He won’t let Jamil bother you at all, not that he was trying in the first place.
-The real issue is Kalim, which sounds crazy, but it’s true.
-Kalim is so… forceful. A pretty strong word, but honestly the only one Ace can think to use.
-He’s really nice, really sweet, seriously such a good guy… but you’re still unsettled by him.
-There are several times during practices that Ace has to yell at him to just leave you alone.
-Sure, it gets him a pretty big scolding from Vil, but he couldn’t care less honestly. He doesn’t wanna risk you having a panic attack because Vil doesn’t wanna be a responsible leader.
-You confide in Ace a lot. How you really want to move past all this, but Crowley won’t provide you with any form of therapy, and you’re just not ready to forgive Jamil or Kalim for what happened.
-He won’t tell you this, but hearing you talk like this breaks his heart.
-You’re normally so strong, so brave, so confident… and now you’re absolutely broken.
-He’s proud of you for putting on a brave face to placate Vil, but he’s angry you have to.
-Surprisingly, though, you do begin to warm up to Kalim. Just a little.
-It's only when Ace, Deuce, or Grim is around, but it's a really big step forward in his eyes.
-You’re getting back to where you used to be little by little.
-He still won’t give you or Jamil the chance to reconcile, but you honestly couldn’t be more grateful for that.
Deuce
-Deuce is incredibly different from Ace in how he handles everything.
-He’s a delinquent, sure, but he’s a Mama’s boy at heart. Therefore, he’s much more equipped to help you emotionally through all this than Ace.
-Where Ace is the harsh pushing force to keep you going, Deuce is the calm where you can rest and cry your heart out for as long as you need.
-As I mentioned, he makes sure you’re eating and drinking and at least speaking to someone.
-He asks Trey for recipes without leading on to what’s going on and asks Cater for advice on helping someone feel safe after a traumatic experience.
-It’s not subtle, but it helps.
-He handles making all your meals, even though he isn’t the best cook, he absolutely puts all his heart and soul into everything he makes.
-A good portion of his days are dedicated to cooking for you, and he gets pretty damn good at it by the time classes start up again!
-With Sam’s shop closed, he has to go into town to get the ingredients he needs, and then he has to spend hours preparing and serving the food.
-He watches you eat, encouraging you that everything is safe and that he made it all by himself by hand.
-He doesn’t question why things ended up this way for you, he wonders how can I help?
-And he does help, a lot, more than just with food.
-Sometimes, late at night, he hears you crying alone in your room. He gets up from his own bed, quietly enters your room, and holds you and grim while you both tremble in fear.
-It makes him so mad. Mad that this happened to you. Mad that Jamil did this in the first place. Mad that he couldn’t help more than he already is.
-Like Ace, he accompanies you to all your classes and makes sure to stay close to your side if any Scarabia students are around.
-He’ll go anywhere you need him to, and if you’re not comfortable being alone and he’s got plans, you’re invited to join him. No matter what anyone else thinks.
-Things get better little by little. You make strides in your ability to be independent again and you’re smiling and joking around like you used to. You even agreed to try out for the VDC with him and Ace… a big mistake.
-He didn’t expect to actually get in, let alone get in with Jamil and Kalim. If it were just that he could’ve been civil, but no, you had to be dragged in too… because that’s always how it works out.
-He has to hold himself from getting in Jamil’s face more than once because just him looking at you is enough to send you into a clear panic attack.
-Deuce does his best to comfort you between all of this, though. Being your shoulder to cry on and trying his best to be your protector… it's just hard. Hard to see you like that, and hard to keep his cool for your sake.
-It's worse with Kalim because both you and Deuce know he means well. You both know he wants to reconcile, but you’re not quite ready.
-Deuce helps the confrontation with the two feel a bit easier though. He acts as a mediator between you and Kalim, and eventually, he’s proud to say he helped you trust Kalim just a little bit.
-Jamil… both of you could use some work, but Deuce is more willing to hear you out on him than Ace is.
Grim
-Grim was there with you the whole time. He understands the fear you’re feeling deeper than anyone else.
-He could just tell something was wrong the second he saw your face. Despite all the celebrations, he was focused on making sure you were at least a little okay.
-He tried to talk to you, tried to make you feel okay, but the only comfort he could offer you was letting you hold him while you cried.
-He could still hear your cries, and they made him want to cry too. He almost did, but he was your guard cat — he had to be strong for you.
-Unlike Ace and Deuce, he never left your side. Not a second. He was there with you from the moment you were unwittingly kidnapped to the sleepless nights in your dorm to the horror of finding out you’d have to work closely with Jamil for the VDC.
-He made his distaste for him very known, sure to make a snarky comment at least once every time he saw him.
-It was so bad, at one point, that Vil had to give him a stern talking to. He didn’t stop regardless.
-You are Grim’s best friend, the only family he has, and Jamil hurt you in unspeakable ways. He couldn’t just sit back and be okay with that.
-He’s really such a good guy.
Kalim
-Kalim means well. With his whole heart, he has the best intentions… just not the best execution.
-See, he didn’t notice initially that anything was really wrong the whole time.
-He didn’t suspect Jamil at all. In fact, he thought that you were really enjoying your stay in Scarabia, you seemed so happy and chatty up until Jamil flipped things on their head.
-Call him air-headed, but he was caught up in his own whirlwind of emotions at the time. You know, the whole betrayal of his supposed best friend took a toll on him too.
-It wasn’t until you were sobbing your throat raw that he realized something was really wrong.
-The look of sheer terror on your face when you made eye contact with him sent shivers up his spine.
-He knew that look. He’d worn that look on his own face too many times as a young child.
-Believe it or not, without Jamil’s intervention, he knew to keep his distance. He knew he had to give you time to adjust.
-Then a few days turned into weeks and weeks turned into a little over a month, and he had hardly seen you around campus.
-You are avoiding your normal route to class, and when he did see you he was also greeted by the harsh glares of your good friends.
-He understood if you’d never want to talk to him ever again, honestly. He couldn’t blame you. You were more headstrong than him, after all.
-Still, when the VDC came around… he was hopeful. Truly he was hoping that something would give.
-He would talk to you in hopes of showing you that he meant no harm, but Ace or Deuce or even Grim would shove their way between the two of you.
-Several times Jamil had to tell him to knock it off because “It’s not worth forcing.”
-Still, he wanted you to know he felt bad. He felt horrible.
-In a very un-Kalim-like move, he quietly asks you if you can speak with him. Alone. But in a crowded enough area that you wouldn’t feel threatened.
-He didn’t expect you to accept it, he wouldn’t have blamed you at all. But you said yes.
-You showed up, with Grim by your side, which was fine. He earned some apologies too.
-He poured his heart out to you, apologizing for things that he couldn’t even control. In turn, he listened to you rant about how scared you were, how angry you were, how you wished you were any of these things.
-And after that, things improved. Slowly, but surely. You became more comfortable around him, and you spoke to him again.
-Sure, you wouldn’t be caught dead at one of Scarabia’s parties, but you considered him a friend.
-That’s all he could ask for.
Jamil
-Jamil is the monster in your story.
-He’s the evil guy who kidnapped, manipulated and lied to you.
-He’s the one who used his misplaced anger as an excuse to hurt others.
-He’s the boogyman who made you endure days of long and hard training, just because he could.
-Of course, he felt bad. What he did was unspeakable, but he was more concerned with how his reputation would last after the overblot.
-More concerned with it not getting out for the safety of his family.
-Even with you sobbing, he just thought you were being dramatic in all honesty. You have a reputation already, he knew you’d been through this whole thing before.
-It didn’t really strike him how badly it affected you.
-He didn’t notice how you switched paths, how you were never in the same area as him for long, and the glares of your friends never once phased him.
-Even Ace’s snarky comments during basketball didn’t bother him for a second.
It wasn’t until he accidentally bumped into you in the hallway, and he saw the look on your face that he realized.
-The terror in your eyes, the way you shrunk back as if he would strike you. It was the same way his parents acted around the Asim’s.
-If he were a more insane man, he might’ve found it liberating, but it wasn’t.
-He had become what he hated to you, he had done what he hated to you.
-Jamil was not only your monster, but he was his own.
-He steers clear of you and keeps as much distance as possible for both your sakes.
-He couldn’t handle someone looking at him like that, and he was sure you couldn’t handle the sight of him after what he did.
-Still, this is NRC, and luck is never on anyone's side here.
-Both of you are forced into a position where you cannot escape the other, you have to learn to live with the awful pits in your stomachs.
-He keeps Kalim away until you both are on good terms, then he simply watches quietly.
-He won’t apologize, he won’t antagonize, he won’t speak unless spoken to.
-You two never truly recover your small lasting friendship, but you do make amends with each other.
-During the trip to the scalding sands, you get to meet Najma, whom he’s confided in about ‘accidentally upsetting a classmate’.
-You get to have a good talk with her, and it makes you really realize some things about Jamil.
-You realize he’s just as broken as you, just as tired as you, and that he feels the most immense amount of guilt for hurting you.
-You, being you, find it in your soul to forgive him.
-Nothing really changes between you. The guilt is still there, and the fear still shakes you to your core, but you both have closure.
-In a situation like this, closure is the best grace a person can ever have.

59, 80, 93 for the octaquartet <3
Thanks, Kai! ^^
59. Is there a spot they tend to kiss or caress habitual?
Finn is... really short, so his habits when standing is limited lmao. He does gently touch his partners' arms or elbows (absent mindedly). When the others are sitting or lying down, he really likes to caress or fiddle with their hair and kiss them on the cheek.
Azul has very careful control over his habits. Behind closed doors, when he's sleepy, though? Caressing the others' lower back and pressing kisses to their temples. Jade is quite similar, although he does like to caress Finn and Azul's hands with his thumb.
Floyd does not kiss. He bites. Jk, he's very affectionate (he does drape over Azul, Jade and Finn constantly, after all) and likes kissing/nibbling at Azul and Finn's earlobes. He doesn't really caress? He more wraps his arms around the others.
80. What tropes could be applied to this relationship?
(*cough* I'm just gonna use ship dynamics)
Opposites attract, calm (this is a lie) talls and feral smol, friends to lovers, childhood friends to lovers, We Are Going to Kick Your Ass, height difference, partners in crime, temporarily one-sided
Guess which applies to who 😈
There's more, but that's all I can think of for now
93. One has hurt their leg on a hike. How does their S/O carry them?
Finn can't lift any of them, I'm sorry, he'll just fall over 😭. He can drag them if it's an emergency, tho. Azul will go for bridal style and absolutely hold it over their head, Jade will, too (he will pretend to lose his grip, though fjfgk). Floyd? Maybe bridal style, but I can also see him flinging them over his shoulder lmaaao.

Without Further Ado: Once Upon a Time.....
Tumblr media
Every Merchild was told from a young age how dangerous the humans were. Parents, Teachers, Elders all told tales of the vicious humans who slaughtered merfolk by the dozens and the clever traps they would use to ensnare merfolk for prizes. Landfolk were all described as hideous creatures fascinated with lifeless contraptions. They were monsters… or so the stories said.
Despite the fear, some dared to have a fascination with the beings above. Azul has always had a fascination with the landfolk and their contraptions but stayed away from the shore out of fear. But sometimes, greater forces led people to face their fears. Forces named Rielle.
Azul was minding his own business, studying a new trinket he found that morning while the twins were off hunting for lunch. It was a triangle with a rounded bottom and a cone on the top that made things look closer when peered though. It had an engraving on the side of an odd creature with four legs and fins sprouting from its back. As he looked through the cone at some fish, he failed to notice the Merprince and his gang readying their rocks.
“HEY OCTOTWERP! CATCH!” Called the red-haired prince as he signaled the attack. Azul jumped from his spot and felt the first of the rocks hit is tentacles. He accidentally inked as he swam away as fast as his tentacles could propel him. “GET HIM!”
On the princes’ orders, the merchild brigade chased him away from the reef and towards forbidden waters.
“JADE! FLOYD! HELP!!” He called out, but the eel twins were nowhere in sight. He looked for another way out, but he was surrounded. He passed the ship graveyard, the kept forest, the rock grove. He could feel his tentacles strain to keep up the pace and all three of his hearts beating at record speed, but the tyrannical prince would not give in until he saw Azul crying and crippled.
“Come on Azul think.” He grunted as he weaved through jagged rocks. Then he saw the sea floor start to incline and a dangerous idea came to mind. Rumor has it that there is a cave that use to be the home of a long-dead exiled Sea Witch and all rumors had a grain of truth. As the rocks got bigger, he saw the carcasses of sharks and whales and knew he was getting close.
“Rielle! He’s heading towards the shore!” He heard Rielle’s right-hand, a flounder named Florence call out.
“Then hurry up you guppy! Don’t let fatso escape!” Rielle called back; his voice was getting closer.
Azul scanned his surroundings and saw it, a small opening underneath a whale head. He darted for the bones and heard the bullies change direction after him. In a last stitch effort to lose his pursuers, he took a deep breath, concentrated, and squeezed himself into the hole. It was a tight fit, but he made it. As he shimmied through, some of his tentacles loosened rocks that blocked the entrance, stopping his pursuers and trapping him in the process. The hole grew larger, and he let himself stop and hide.
He hid in the larger hole and listened.
“Florence! Get out of the way! I’ll blast my way in!” Rielle called.
Just as Azul prepared to face his death, he heard the distinct voices of his saviors “In where, Princie~”
“TWEEELS!” Florence shrieked in fear.
“We playing a game here?” Jade asked.
“Oooo~ I wanna play!” Floyd retorted and all Azul could hear was chaos.
“Your highness, we need to leave! This place is way too close for comfort.” Another of the prince’s posse, Sebet if Azul was correct, said. “Besides, they’re doomed anyway, let’s leave them for the fishermen. We can play with Azul later. He has to come back sometime.”
“Fine.” Rielle sounded annoyed then decided to shout, “YA HEAR THAT AZUL! SHOW YOUR FAT FACE IN ATLANTICA AGAIN AND WE’LL GETCHA! INKING WILL BE THE LEAST OF YOUR PROBLEMS!”
“YA! WELL NEXT TIME WE SEE YUR FACE OUTTA ALENTICA WELL BE SNACKING ON PRINCIE!” Floyd called back.
Azul heard the group laugh as they swam away.
“Azul, are you in there?” Jade called.
“Yeah, I think I’m stuck…” Azul called back, choking on his words from crying.
“Hold on Zul! We’ll get ya outa there!” Floyd called, “I think there’s another entrance over there!”
“Azul, we’ll be right back!” Jade said before the two swam away.
Azul waited a few minutes before letting himself take a deep breath. A few tears escaped his eyes as he realized his doom. He was stuck in a cave. He couldn’t get out. The twins would get bored of helping him soon enough. And if he went back home, the prince and his school were waiting for him.
‘Would mom look for me?’ He thought as more tears streamed from his blue eyes, ‘She probably thinks I’m dead anyway…she’ll just try again with dad and forget I ever existed.’
His tentacles curled in on themselves as he cried. No wonder the other fry picked on him, he was just a crybaby, that’s all he’ll ever be.
Then one of his tentacles hit something… a vial. He looked up from his spot as his tentacle picked up the object. It was thin, made of glass with a cork keeping some green stuff in it. Then another hit a different object, a rounder, thicker glass container holding a powdery substance. Ever curious, Azul moved forward and saw more vials. Somewhat intact and held different substances while others were broken and had the contents spewed around them. The deeper he went; he saw more things covered in moss with age. Then he entered a larger opening, what must be the main room. In the center was a caldron overturned and around it was different objects.
‘The stories were true… this is the witch’s layer!’ Azul’s mood quickly turned from despair to joy. “I can’t believe it! I’m in The Sea Witch’s layer!”
For once he was thankful for his tentacles as he explored the cavern. He looked into different rooms and saw bedrooms, a kitchen, storerooms and the most wonderful library! In the library there where rows upon rows of spell books. He took some off and skimmed the contents. There where books for beauty potions, translations spells, identification incantations, and even transmutation! He was pulling different books then found a peculiar one titled “Cecelia: A History.” Out of curiosity he pulled it, and the shelf began to move.
A new, hidden tunnel appeared. It was dark and lead straight up, so being the curious creature he is, he went up. His amazement pushed his caution to the side as he began to think about what could be up there: magical artifacts, forbidden spell books, long dead secrets! But instead, it led to the surface. He saw the end of the water and paused. He had never broken to the surface before… but what could be up there? He was already here, might as well take a peek.
He took a deep breath and slowly lifted his head above the water. What he saw amazed him: another living space. It was almost exactly like the one below with a cauldron in the center and a smaller set of shelves behind it filled with things. To the side was a makeshift kitchen, a bedroom, and a sitting room with furniture made from the brown, rough material sunken ships were made of. After determining that the land was also deserted, he rose higher and got the courage to climb onto the land. His tentacles moved on the dry land pretty easily and adjusted to the sudden pressure quickly. After determining it was safe, he let his curiosity take over. He rushed over to the shelves and looked at the different books and objects. He picked them up and read the different titles, some were spell books, but others were books on human society. He made a mental note to read them later after he explored some more. Then he saw a necklace. A beautiful shell necklace that seemed to glow slightly. As his hand brushed the shell, then he heard a noise.
Crying, someone was crying. He darted back to the water out of fear and hid under the waves. ‘Someone’s here… I thought this place was aban- wait… that sounds like its coming from over there…’ He swam towards a second entrance to this place. It was vertical and there was a light coming from the other side. He went through the tunnel and saw the sand make a sharp incline up. ‘The Shore!’
The crying got louder and through the water he saw a small figure. ‘Leave! GO! This is Dangerous!’ part of him screamed in his brain, but the other part recognized that crying. It was a cry of loneliness. He clenched his fist and took another deep breath “Kept it.” He told himself then rose to peer out of the water. He peaked his eyes out of the water but that was all he needed to see the most beautiful being he has ever seen: A human girl.
She looked to be around his age, skin the color of white sand, golden hair like waves fell over her shoulders and hid her face. She had on a cloth thing in a pink color more vibrate than he had ever seen with a matching ribbon in her hair. He could see her legs, thin things that had the oddest fins attached to them with thinner tentacles on the end of them. Her legs were pulled into her chest with her arms keeping them close. He had been in that position many times before. Her sobs echoed in the cavern and made his heart hurt. Next to her was a brown basket made of the same particular material that the furniture was made of. Inside it were books and cloth wrapped objects.
He watched her for a moment and a part of him wanted to swim closer. Subconsciously, a single tentacle stretches close to the girl, and it wasn’t until he saw the black limb creeping up to her legs that he noticed. He wrenched the tentacle back and it caused a splash.
“Who’s there!” The girl looked up quicker than he could sink down. Their eyes locked in that moment, and he was stunned. Vibrant green orbs starred back at him. Filled a familiar sensation that he knew all too well: loneliness.
He has no clue how long they stayed like that. Staring at each other unsure what to do. She was the one to break the silence. “Woah… you’re a.. A mermaid!”
She moved closer and Azul sunk down into the depths, his rational brain telling him to flee.
“Wait! I-I won’t hurt you! Please don’t go!” He heard her call. He saw her legs running towards him in the water and he backed-up terrified. He was about to run, but what she said next would be the words that changed Azul’s life forever: “Please… I-I just want a friend…”
‘Run… Run…’ He thought, then his pesky hearts got in the way, ‘She’s just like me…I’m already dead anyway.’
He turned around and saw her lower half in the water. The fabric moving with the waves and pale legs firmly planted in the sand. He closed his eyes and slowly rose above the water. Her eyes shined and looked over him not in fear and disgust, but amazement and wonder.
“H-hi…” She said and smiled at him. She smiled at him. Then held out her hand, “I’m Grace…Grace Trein, what’s your name?”
She looked so soft and squishy. He reached out his hand tentatively, but his nerves got the best of him and backed away. She could see his hesitation and lifted both of her hands palms out, “I’m not going to hurt you, I promise, see.” She wiggled her fingers and smiled. He was still nervous and didn’t move towards her but did speak up.
“a-azul” he said in a quiet voice.
“Azul? That’s a pretty name!” He could feel her eyes studying him and prepared himself for the hurtful comments on his weight. But she instead pointed to something in the water, “Is that a Sexton!”
He looked down and saw he still had the weird contraption that got him in this mess. He lifted it and repeated the name, “Sex-ton?”
“Yeah! Sailors use it to navigate!” She stepped closer and he moved back. She noticed this and stepped back as well, “May I see it?” She stretched her hand out palm up. He saw a silver bracelet on her arm that caught his eye. She saw this and took it off, “Wanna trade for a bit? I promise i’ll give it back!”
Curiosity won and two black tentacles moved towards her hand, and one held the sexton. He quickly took the silver bracelet and dropped the sexton into her hand before she could comment. He took the bracelet from his tentacle and examined the silver base and blue jewels embedded in it.
“Wow! You’re an Oct-mer!” She said, “That is so cool!”
He was not prepared for the comment and a blue blush crept onto his face. He was shocked to say the least, “Cecelia…”
“huh?” Grace tilted her head and repeated the word, “Cecelia… is that the proper name?”
Azul nodded and kept his head down. “Yeah…”
“Cecelia… That is really pretty, I like it!” Her face glowed as she spoke, all happy and joyful. It was completely different from the face she had when he arrived. She looked at the sexton and moved it around in her hands, then lifted it up and looked through it. The curiosity in her eyes made Azul want to ask her questions like ‘where is she from? Why was she in the cave? How did she find it? Why are you being nice to me? What do you want from me? Are you just being nice to my face or to lure me into a trap?’ but he kept his mouth shut and went back to examining the bracelet. It was very beautiful and simple in design, but even more interesting was the writing on the underside of the bracelet: Grace – Our precious pearl Love Mama and Papa. He ran his hand along the writing and felt the indents swirl with the letters.
Grace broke his concentration, “I was just reading about this!” He looked up and saw her walk to the shore with his trinket.
“h-hey! That’s m-mine!” He swam forward a bit as he feared she would run off with the sexton!
Grace quickly turned around and subdued his nerves “I won’t take it, I’m just grabbing my book!” She took out a green book from her basket and sat on the shore, “come here! I wanna show you something!”
“u-um…” Azul bit his lower lip before gathering his courage. This was going against every bone in his body, but he swam to the shore, “Ok.” The dry sand felt weird on his skin, but he made it over and peered at the book.
On the page was a four-legged creature with wings, the same creature that was on the sexton. “It’s called a Pegasus! They are magical creatures from when the great seven lived.” She said and tilted the book as if telling him to take it. He took it gingerly and felt his hand brush against hers as it transferred. His curiosity took over and he started to read the passage next to the picture. “According to the book, The Hero Hercules had a Pegasus who helped him on his adventures. I was reading about it for lessons today!” She was really close to him, and he could feel her clothes brush against his skin as she held up the Saxton. “Papa says that the Gods rearranged the stars so Hercules and his Pegasus’ could watch over humanity for the rest of time.”
“Stars?” Azul asked and turned his head to look at her, only then realizing that their heads were so close. Their noses almost touched, and she looked into his eyes directly.
“Yeah! The bright dots in the sky at night!” She says and points out to the opening of the cave, then her expression changed to one of confusion and realization, “You have never seen the stars. Have you?”
Azul shook his head and held his breath. ‘She is so close to me. Why is she so close to me. Whyisshesocloseto-’
GRRRRR.
Azul’s train of thought were interrupted by his stomach. His round belly grumbled so loudly that it echoed in the cave and Azul felt his heart sank. He froze in embarrassment. He was making progress with the girl and his stomach is going to ruin every-
“Are you hungry? I have sandwiches!” Grace turned to her basket and pulled out the cloth wrapped thing. She removed the cloth and handed him a dry sandwich. It looked like the sandwiches his mom sold at her restaurant, but instead of kelp it had a sponge, beige looking holding the contents together. He looked at her in surprise and pointed to himself.
“Y-you’re giving it to me?” He said surprised.
“Well yeah,” She took out half of the sandwich, “I have other snacks to if you don’t like sandwiches, Mrs. Hellen aways packs extra so I have chips, apples, juice, and some cookies!” She held out more food and he just looked at her in shock.
“You’re not going to make fun of me?” He asks quietly. This question made her smile fall and eyebrows knit together.
“Why would I do that?” She said, she shoulders slumped a bit and she looked down, “Being made fun of hurts more than being pushed downstairs, I don’t wanna do that to anyone.”
The glint came back. The watery gaze, strained voice, tense body, the pain… it is all too familiar to Azul. “People do that to you too?” Azul asked.
“Worse, brothers.” Grace said, “Anthony and Danny always make fun of me. They say I talk too much, or ask too many questions, or am too ugly to be a girl, or make fun of me for not having magic, or worse…” Tears started to form in her eyes. She hugged herself with the food still in her hand, “Ever since we moved here, its gotten worse. Mama and Papa use to step in and tell them to stop, but Mama isn’t here anymore, Papa is always working, and the servants don’t do anything… probably because they agree with them. Eli tries to step in, but he is too little to understand.” She then shakes her head and wipes her eyes away with her forearm, “I’m sorry, I’m talking too much, its not proper for a lady to talk so much-”
“Nonono! Me too!” Azul gestures to himself, “I mean- I like hearing you talk! People back home bullied me all the time! They say I talk to much a-and call me a nerd too! B-but they also call me fat and ugly, w-which is true for me but not in your case you're really pretty-but anyway! I get it! Bullies hurt…” Azul fidgeted his fingers and tentacles as he spoke and looked down at the ground, scared to look into her eyes.
There was a tense silence for a moment and Azul thought he blew it with his new potential friend, “…you think I’m pretty?” He looked up and her face was red, she was blushing so hard and looked at him in surprise.
“Y-yeah… you are…” He was really nervous as they were still close.
Grace loosened her grip on herself and the poor sandwiches and a small smile graced her lips, “Well… I think your pretty cute,” She looked up and him and their eyes met yet again. “And, I have never seen a mermaid in real life before, but after talking to you, I think Cecelia are cooler than regular mermaids.” She held out half of the sandwich and her smile changed from small to big in a genuine manner. And a weird thing happened, her smiling made Azul want to smile. The only people who have ever made Azul smile just by them smiling were the tweels. He feels a weird draw towards her, like a string pulling them together. It was a similar tug he felt with the tweels, but something about it was different.
Grace handed Azul half of the sandwich and he took it. But before taking a bite, she raised her half. “Friends?”
Azul felt his hearts beat faster. He was in shock; ‘Sh-she wants to be friends with m-me? Th-this never happens! I have a Friend! A new human friend! That means I have THREE friends!!’ “Friends!”
“Friends?” “FRIENDS!!” Two teal heads suddenly leaped out of the water.
In the shallows of the cave water were Jade and Floyd in matching sharp tooth grins.
Azul felt panic rise in his chest as the two swam closer and crawl onto the sand. Grace jumped with half a sandwich hanging out of her mouth. “moareyou?” She said with her mouth full.
Azul’s arms and tentacles were moving frantically, “nononono, please don’t freak out, they are my friends,” Grace took the sandwich out of her mouth and relaxed her shoulders a bit. “T-this is Jade and Floyd, they a-are my friends, and I guess your friends now too since you’re my friend, i-if that’s how this thing works right?” As he spoke his tentacles moved to exclaim his point.
Grace looked back and forth between Azul and the twin’s and her apprehension turned to a smile, “I-I have three friends, I HAVE THREE FRIENDS!” She was as excited as Floyd was. Her hair and bow bounced as she jumped. Her eyes sparkled and she tackled Azul in a hug. “THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! YOU’RE THE BEST!!!!”
Azul stood there stunned. Her arms around him and she was thanking him for friends. She moved on to hug the twins, but all Azul could think about was her arms around him and her eyes glowing in excitement.
“YAY!” Grace tackle-hugged Floyd and the two fell in the water. Jade chuckled at the sight and beached himself on the shore.
“Seems like you helped yourself Azul,” Jade commented and plucked some of the treats out of Grace’s basket, “You even found food.”
“Seems so,” Azul replied as Grace and Floyd got out of the water.
Grace squeezed the water out of her dress and hair, Azul couldn’t take his eyes off her and it made Jade’s smile grow sharp, “A human girl… interesting,” He hummed.
Azul turned to Jade and quirked his brow, “What do you mean by that?”
Jade shook his head as Grace came over to hug him, “Nothing, just interesting.”
Azul would not understand what Jade noted until years later. On that summer’s day, Azul’s life changed. He found an abandoned grotto he now called home, he started to seriously study magic alongside the tweels using the books and artifacts now at their disposal, and met Grace Trein, a girl who would help him conquer both land and sea.
