hello 😌 thank you for asking - i do actually have some thoughts on this, in the way that i think mickey's wedding notebook goes through several stages.

i think at its creation, it's more of a dump-book. mickey's at his stream-of-consciousness, hunting-and-gathering phase. there's no organization - no rhyme or reason - mickey is stressed and overwhelmed and he's just gluing shit right into that motherfucker, filling the pages as quickly as he can turn them. he doesn't really have a Vision yet - he just knows he's gotta prepare for it, especially since ian doesn't seem too interested in making decisions.

come to jesus moment. mickey slaps down a stack of pictures he's cut out and goes to start adding them, only to realize he has no blank pages left. he's filled the whole thing. that can't be right, can it? it's a big notebook, and the stuff he just cut out for it is real good shit so he's gotta make room. gotta start from page one. gotta thumb through it and pull a 'wtf' face because he doesn't even like some of this shit? why'd he put it in here? tulips??? who did that! okay, time to pump the fucking brakes.

paring down. re-evaluation. ian walks into the living room one night and mickey's cross-legged in the middle of a sea of ripped papers. like some sort of hamster. ian thinks perhaps divorce is on the table, only to come closer and realize mickey's cutting shit out and pasting it into a new notebook, the glue stick caught between his teeth like a cigar (Alternate Title: Ian's Come To Jesus Moment.)

Music. Food. Flowers. etc. mickey sits down with ian again and flips through it, getting his thoughts on different things. out comes the big red marker - circling - crossing out - starring. he can see ian trying to sneak closer looks across the table, but mickey's grown very attached. it's his hopes and dreams in here, motherfucker! ian can look at it later. after he finds the chiavaris.

That Bitch. this baby is in her final form. mickey knows what he wants and knows he's got the power to haggle, secure, or steal it all when he's got his notebook tucked under his arm. she's also good and solid when he smacks lip over the head with her after he makes a passing comment about being a groomzilla. she is everything.

when he does finally see his notebook again after many years, it's because ian is thumbing through it, this teary, fond look in his eyes as he sits in a sea of boxes. mickey doesn't know if he should be embarrassed or proud or what. a lot of their wedding day ended up shifting on its axis for a ton of fucked up reasons, so as gorgeous as she is, a lot of her didn't actually get to see the light of day.

but ian is innnn lovvvve (aaaaat laaaaast my looove has come alonnnggg). so much so that for their ten year anniversary, mickey walks into their little get-together and immediately recognizes a ton of the details. like they've jumped out of the pages of his notebook and into reality ten years later. ian is a sneaky fucker! and mickey has excellent taste.

and he's just really glad that he cut out that disgusting tulip arrangement in his first notebook purge.

Quill hears a familiar Asgardian bellow of a laugh as he walks up the steps, following the sound, he sees the back of Thor with his arm draped over the shoulder of a woman- a girl, Quill's 'girl'.

He rushes over, abruptly interrupting the conversation. 

"Oh hey, Quill," you say slyly, leaning into Thor as you bat your lashes at the clearly jealous-looking guy standing before you. 

"Good to see you," Thor greets, extending a hand. "Missed ya, buddy,"

Peter swats his hand away. "Yeah, yeah, yeah. What uh— what you doing?" he asks inconspicuously, gazing around the busy room with his hands on his hips. 

"He was just telling me a funny story," you pause to laugh, tapping Thor on the chest. "You should tell him. He'd love it."

As Thor described the humourous events of the story, you watched Peter's face begin to contort, barely keeping his composure, his nostrils practically flaring as he stared at your lingering hand. Keeping your eyes glued to Quill's, you taunt him further, lightly circling your hand over Thor's muscular arm as you engage in the conversation. 

"Tree?" Thor pauses the story as he catches a glimpse of Groot above the swarm of people. "One minute," he says, slipping from you. "I'll be right back."

"What the hell was that?" Quill whispers, his tone full of irritation. 

"What was what?" you ask, crossing your legs as you pat the now-empty space beside you, silently urging him to sit.

"You're such a dick," he chuckles, sitting close beside you, his hip pressed to yours as he drapes his arm over your shoulder.

"Yeah, well... so are you," you snicker, resting your hand on his thigh, slowly leaning into him. "God, this music is awful," 

"Right?"

You and Peter sit together in comfortable silence as you gaze around the room of unfamiliar people, watching the conversations play out as you snuggle into one another's side. Both of you avoiding the daunting question. The question of your undeclared situation.

"We really should mingle," you say begrudgingly, tapping him on the leg.

okay I’ve refrained from posting my thoughts on the ted lasso finale until now in the interest of making sure they’re expressed properly so that people understand how correct my opinions actually are. but I’m here and I’m queer and LET’S DO IT FOLKS:

TED LASSO FINALE THOUGHTS

THE GOOD:

Nate!! Nate was a timid, sweet note in this episode. It was such a gentle little reintegration of his character back into the team and seeing him get a secure happy ending after all that time of insecurity was the part of the episode that provided the MOST payoff. Seeing Nick Mohammed’s post about Nate and his family life and understanding how much he put into that character was so beautiful to see too. I adore actors who very publicly (and in a nerdy way) love their craft!

His conversation with Ted also made me cry like I have never cried before.

COLIN KISSED HIS FELLA AFTER A WIN!! Ugh such a beautiful payoff and full circle moment for him, I was truly squealing with joy <3

The team’s rendition of So Long, Farewell had me GIGGLINGGG oh my god, I’m a die hard Sound of Music fan so I loved it! I would have maybe liked a little more emotion from Ted, I felt like his reaction was kind of… meh? meek? but other than that the song itself was FANTASTIC.

Obviously I love that they won the game, duh

They also had a lot of really amazing and thoughtful callbacks in this episode, like Keeley’s parallel to her entrance in the pilot was great, Ted’s bbq sauce mantra, Nate leaping into Ted’s arms, the ussie guy, the winning play being the play from season 1. All of those little moments showed a strong attention to detail I truly loved.

I love that Rupert made HIMSELF unlikeable in the end. Rebecca didn’t need to ruin his life; she stopped caring and soon saw he was doing a perfectly fine job of doing it himself. Karma truly is Rebecca Welton’s boyfriend!! Or is it?

Jake the motherfucking client seducer over here turning out to be a total dud like yesss!! I don’t want Ted and Michele back together by any means but fuck that guy lol, glad to see she and Henry were getting sick of him

Which leads me to…

THE BAD:

I know you all know I ship Tedbecca, but this is truly not coming from a shipper standpoint when I say that that first scene of them was absolute BAIT. It was pretty disappointing because I know Ted Lasso’s been prone to red herrings and fakeouts every now and then but I didn’t take it as a show that would truly bait their fans with something like that??

I don’t care if I’m biased, I don’t care if the writers were trying to be avant-garde with their ending for rebecca, I’ll say what I’m about to say a million times: writing off 1 of your 2 most main characters into a happy ending with a man whose name the audience doesn’t even know is literally never a good writing decision. I think this should be obvious.

I have no hate to Boat Guy, Rebecca’s whole thing with him was basically the plot of Before Sunrise + Before Sunset (all hail Richard Lanklater) if someone watched those movies and then tried condensing them into fifteen accumulated minutes of television

Keeley, Roy, Jamie… they did you three so fucking dirty my babes. Keeley you especially. I’m beyond disappointed, bordering on genuinely hurt, by how much they screwed up Keeley and all of her adjacent storylines this season.

I loved RoyKeeley so much in seasons 1 and 2, they had such a sweetness and a magic to them. There were so many elements like that to season 1 and 2 that I feel the writers gave up on in the name of growth or… honestly, at this point, I don’t know why they did this. Roy was a little insecure in seasons 1 and 2, but I never felt like he was needy. It felt so cruel to have shown us RoyKeeley in all of these moments of such stability, such healthiness, and such genuine love for so long and then rip it away for some version of Roy Kent that felt hollow, twisted, and who just Did Not Get It. It makes me so sad.

It makes me sad for Jamie too. Him falling for Keeley again was like the last thing I needed to see from his character. There’s so much else they could have done with him, and instead they took that beautiful moment of him being accountable and respectful with Keeley and the tape, and they turned it into something ugly: they had him weaponize it as a bargaining chip against Roy.

I don’t understand why they thought having our favs engaged in this very sexist outdated convo with such possessive language in the name of comedy was a good idea. I get it was poking fun at them but it was the kind of fun that shouldn’t have to be poked at by now. They’re not these men, I don’t recognize this version of them. It’s such a regression.

speaking of weird and uncomfortable shit being played off for laughs… beard and jane got married! ted wasn’t even there! she shredded his passport to keep him in captivity! how creepy! (see the joke is that they’re crazy and do toxic things to each other. you’re supposed to laugh.)

West Side Story (2021 - Songs)

Here’s what I think of (pretty much) all of the songs!

Ok Icl I’m gonna skip the first one by the Sharks cuz I have absolutely no idea what they’re saying 😭 I do plan on looking up a translation at some point however, so I’ll say what I think abt it when I have!

The Jet Song - This song is unfairly catchy 😭 It’s a great introduction to the Jets, and the actual shot in the movie is just amazing, this song absolutely slaps

Something’s Coming - Ok so I actually adore ansel’s voice 😭 I really like this song, and honestly the scene in the movie was actually kinda fun

Maria - Once again I absolutely adore his voice, is he the best ever?? Ofc not, however I definitely think he did this song justice, and overall this whole part of the movie was great

The Balcony Scene (Tonight) - I love this song so much it is actually unreal 😭 This whole scene was the best thing e v e r (although Icl I was absolutely yelling at maria to get back inside before she got caught throughout the whole thing 💀) Also, Ansel and Rachel’s voices blend so well together?? And Rachel’s is just like,,,so s m o o t h it’s perfect

America - This entire song was m a g i c a l, Ariana is such a good Anita, and personally this is my favourite version of the song, and is one of my favourites songs in the whole movie, just because the whole thing was choreographed so well, the dancing is so good I love the whole thing sm, and also I love how Bernardo and Anita have different views on everything! Overall this song is just so fun 😭

Gee, Officer Krupke - Oh my fucking god I love this song sm, not only is it unfairly catchy (as most of the Jets’ songs are) but the entire thing was choreographed and pulled off so well! Although compared to the dance heavy numbers there was obviously a lack of choreography, but in terms of how well the did everything?? (Especially with 2 benches like that’s actually crazy) It was one of my favourite scenes in the whole movie! And I know I have said it a million times but This is why we cast Broadway actors in musical movies 👏👏 they pulled it off perfectly and this whole part of the movie could not have been better

One Hand, One Heart - Once again their voices blend together so well, and I just absolutely adore the way they sound 😭 I can’t remember this scene that well but the song itself is, although relatively short, still really good!

Cool - I also absolutely love this song! The way they moved in the whole scene was awesome, and although a majority of it is just background music as they do their whole lil dance thing, it’s still pretty catchy in my opinion, and is one I find myself listening to often!

Tonight (Quintet) - Holy f u c k, this song is so good! All of the different povs?? Both the Jets and the Shark preparing for the rumble, Anita preparing for Bernardo (clearly not prepared for what was gonna happen), Tony singing about seeing Maria, and Maria singing about seeing Tony, all of the povs work so well together, and this whole entire scene and song is just so ugh 😫 When Maria’s part overlaps the Jets, then Anita joining in, and then hearing everyone all blend togther, it is literal perfection and is s o good it’s unreal, I adored this whole lead up to everything, and the song is amazing!

I Feel Pretty - This song is actually kinda fun 😭 The whole scene was such a 180 compared to seeing the rumble before, and honestly I love it sm! Rachel and everyone elses voice are also great, and it honestly is just such a catchy song

Somewhere - I believe this was originally Tony and Maria’s song (pls correct me if I’m wrong tho!) but having Rita sing this was a m a z i n g, her voice is just so,,raw Ig 😭 The emotion was incredible, and the fact that she recorded this live?? Like hello share some talent with me pls 🤲 But honestly Rita is awesome, and the fact they were able to get her in the movie, and gave her a song is the best thing ever!

A Boy Like That / I Have a Love - Both Ariana and Rachel were such good calls casting wise for Anita and Maria, their voices are literally so powerful they’re so good 😭 The way Anita’s voice is lower, and Maria’s voice is sm higher, yet they still blend together? But also how they blend together in such a chaotic way, which really conveys the emotions they were both feeling during the song - Anita is more,,angry and closer to yelling, yet Maria is so much softer, she’s clearly in love, and the way she sings conveys that so well (Also Rachel’s high notes at the end?? And the way their voices go together so smoothly at the end as well)

The score/soundtrack in general - It was so good, the entire score is iconic, there is not a bad song in this whole musical, and each backing track suits the tone of the scene perfectly, I honestly could not ask for a better score and soundtrack - you can clearly hear how much work, how much thought has gone into this whole sountrack and movie, and it is perfect

Completely random but I need to pay homage to the whole dance at the gym, the backing track for starters, but mainly the choreography, cuz it was done so well and I absolutely love that entire scene sm! I love this movie with my whole heart, and I am so glad it was made! I definitely want to do a part 3 of this at some point with what I thought about the characters (and possibly also the casting, but the casting was perfect anyways so I probably wouldn’t have much to say abt that 😭) Thanks for reading to anyone who made it to the end!

SPOILERS FOR NEW MARVEL STUFF! ⚠️

Finally got around to watching The Marvels on Disney +!!!!! It’s the best mcu film this phase istg omg it’s SO GOOD and immediately you can tell it was written by a woman NOT TO MWNTION THE INSANE END CREDIT SCENES WTFFFFF KATE BISHOP PIZZA THE DOG AND XMEN?!?!??!!!!!!! Omg I’m ecstatic this is the best marvel film in years it’s finally giving avengers early phase vibes! And I’m actually happy with every single plot moment! Unlike no way home where there were many questionable plot moments and bad scenes and bad cgi and multiverse of madness was something different entirely like I loved the horror and stuff and it made sense but as a whole that works with the rest of the marvel universe I didn’t like how it went and wandas “death” or “fake death” and the whole x men stuff. Loved America in that tho! Her whole moment made sense and ugh I can’t explain it properly plus the shitshow that was the She Hulk series and overall it just made me lose faith in marvel and that’s why I didn’t see The marvels in cinema like I usually do bc guardians of the galaxy 3 was so shite and I thought this would too maybe that’s why it flopped cuz the hype on past films wasn’t lived up to. But this FINALLY brings back early marvel vibes and I’m so into it. (Plus the reign of the cats 🐈‍⬛ 🐈😆)

Cuz as much as I liked NWH there were questionable parts yk, Dr Strange characterised Wanda badly from start to finish and didn’t do her justice, Wakanda Forever was amazing don’t get me wrong I really loved it and cried A LOT, but I wasn’t too keen on the whole Namor thing or unnecessary deaths, and some characters really just deserved better than what they got, like Okoye.. and Black Widow was great but it could’ve been a bit better with cgi and plot-wise like the deleted scenes should’ve been kept and so on.

For the first time I just really enjoyed every part of this film, since marvel has gone downhill lately, this is new for me. also I loved the queer undertones for Kamala and Carol, although they should’ve been braver and put it in explicitly if they wanted to show Carol and Valkyrie together instead of the kiss on the cheek and no talk of them being together. But headed in the right direction for sure and not to mention the Kate and Kamala scene? Female avengers team? Finally not outnumbered by men? Also I really ship Kate and Yelena so I hope she comes onto the team too, though she might just stick with the Thunderbolts antihero theme. I love that it’s so clearly written by women and directed by them plus the brilliant casting and having the villain also be a woman and with a realistic villainisation like I get why she turned out the way she did, she just wanted her home back for her people, also it’s Zawe Ashton, Tom Hiddlestons wife so it would be cool to see them act together perhaps, but either way brilliant casting and script and everything, I love Kamala really speaking for the fans in a lot of it, and the musical scene was fun in a mystical way, like when we first got introduced to Asgard way back when, I just wish we saw what happened there at least a small look in at the end with Carol checking in on them because they left in the middle of a battle and then we don’t find out what happened to that planet. But other than that small detail the film was fantastic and I loved how even Goose got a good storyline.

I had an idea for Dream and the Reader. So, imagine a world where Orpheus doesn't die. But Dream and Calliope still part ways. So, single dad Dream isn't exactly the most emotionally equipped to handle a child so Lucienne is tasked with hiring someone to look after Orpheus. You come from a long line of nannies that Orpheus messes with to get his father's attention.

You eventually gain Orpheus' trust and you aren't afraid to tell Morpheus how much his son needs him and how he's been neglectful. Morpheus and Orpheus grow closer and you and Morpheus do too.

It all comes to a head when there is a ball at the Dreaming and you are teaching Orpheus how to dance from the sidelines. Dream spots you and joins you. You two dance and that's the moment you two realise you are falling in love with each other.

Also, Morpheus would be courting someone at the same time (Titania or Thessaly are the most likely candidates).

And if this sounds familiar, it is because I am basing it off of the Sound of Music.

Maybe you were secretly distracting yourself, knowing Dream was taken. It pained you to see him next to Thessaly, so you poured all of your attention onto the ball itself.

And the whole time Dream just can’t take his eyes of you, much to Thessaly’s disdain. She always had an inkling of your feelings for Dream, and his for you. She tried to put a wedge between the two of you, but like magnets you still found each other.

Maybe during the night she tried to cause chaos to permanently separate the two of you, but it only put more distance between her and Dream. And Dream was now questioning why he was still with her, he was never truly happy with her around

Maybe even Calliope is there and saw it. Maybe she is the one who finally pushed Dream to go for you, she could see him and Thessaly were never good for each other to beginning (and she didn’t like how Thessaly treated Orpheus. Thessaly hardly or never interacted, nor cared for Orpheus). It’s also just a very heart to heart moment between former lovers and her wishing him a better life

So by the end of the night you and Dream finally confess and share a dance together

well, nobody dumps trauma on the younger counterparts of main leads like this writer. In retrospective, I should've known who was the evil mastermind behind it lol

I am conflicted about their specific trauma, but I am enamored with the characters and want to protect them so badly. I find their story so tragic and I'm so sad that the happy ending will belong to the older protagonists and not the young ones, because damn, they didn't have enough laughter and love around them. When will these young actors not deal with such heavy storylines?? So unfair.

Drama portrays so well the fact that trauma works in such different ways for people and how we show it. The first thing we notice about this guy is that he's quiet, reserved, stoic and very dedicated at school. The first thing we know about him is that nothing comes for free, as he uses every opportunity to get money and just before we think he loves money and dreams of getting out this town and this provincial life blah blah, we find out the truth and that all the money is for him to get away from his abusive ass of a father who beats him everyday. Ugh. My jaw dropped to the floor, I swear. I was shocked. I HATE HATE HATE this so much. You have to be an insect of the lowest kind, utterly disgusting, if you hit your children. People like that shouldn't be allowed to procreate.

But then, right after this, literally the next scene, we find out her father also beats her and I swear to God I was screaming and pulling my hair because whyyyy ???poor children. They do not deserve this. Their house is the place where they should feel the safest, not the place where they walk on eggshells and are afraid of even making a noise. Their parents should be the people who make them feel the safest, not the ones who make their nightmares come true. This right here is something I hate seeing represented in media, so watching it was pretty difficult for me. In fact, I'd advise people who are triggered by this to skip scenes or the entire episode, because the domestic abuse scenes were pretty realistic. And so loud.

But trauma for our young female lead it's different. She tries to escape from it and leave it at her house, and so she is bright, happy and over-the-top silly teen at school. She tries to enjoy, even if it's a facade. Because this is her way to cope. And her music.

I loved how he tried to reassure her and calm her down. Even if they haven't been friends for so long, he already knows her and understands her in a way no one else does. He's such a kind and selfless soul, despite everything and no matter if he's the second or main lead (more on that later), I'm rooting for him to live happily.

I really wanted for them to get away together, and live in Seoul, being adopted by her idol and brand new CEO. I wanted them to grow up together and happy, but I knew exactly where this was going, not only because of the premise and the writer, but also because this is dramaland. So when he told her they had to run away, I knew they wouldn't make it.

We are presented with a dilemma of who is the endgame here, but right now I don't care that much. I only want for this girl to live her life and finally achieve her dream of meeting her idol and be a singer. Still, we must acknowledge the elephant in the room and I've seen second male lead has glasses, so that's either the drama telling us the answer OR trying to confuse us. I find that I'm okay if he is the young kid who bravely stood up to her violent father just so he could give her time to escape.

But my money is on my human golden retriever. Aww, it's such a sight for sore eyes to see Chae JongHyeop in a main role again after almost a year and a half. He was amazing in Love All Play.

So yes, this is the writer of Start Up (does anyone else get PTSD from how toxic the fandom was back then? No? just me?) so we know she's gonna make it a point to drag this love triangle for a while. But this is also the writer of Pinocchio, While you were Sleeping and I hear Your Voice (my personal favorite), so *fingers crossed*

Also, as most of you know, I was very strongly pro team Tech is alive and I don’t know how to feel now that we didn’t get a reveal. I’m thinking if we get another show maybe he might still come back but my optimism is a little,,, depleted.

Also I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that Tarkin reverts funds from Necromancer to Stardust AKA the Death Star. Like yeah, let’s forget about eternal life and focus on big floaty ball.

I just thought that was funny.

Also Crosshair saying that clone force 99 died with Tech. In a way that’s very true. They weren’t the same squad after that and they never will be. After that loss something was kicked loose in Hunter, I think. He was more sure than ever that he wanted to be a family before he wanted to be a squad. And in the end that’s what they got. There’s a bitter sweet poetic beauty in that I think.

Ugh honestly I think I need to sit in this for a while and process it because I’m a little,,, idk it was a lot. Like it was great but it was so much yanno? pride, arrogance, and a melody (or four, actually)

This is a given considering that the franchise started from and is - in most of its mediums - a musical at heart, but DAMN, I’ll say this over and over, Revue Starlight has incredible music. Bangers everywhere. 

Hokori to Ogori (Pride and Arrogance) is probably one of RevStar’s staple songs. It’s one of the most listened-to revue songs and is practically iconic. It’s also a perfect example of RevStar’s usage of motifs within the franchise. I’m not great at essays but dear GOD do I badly want to talk about it. So, why not?

(Heads Up 1: I am NOT a professional when it comes to music theory!! I’m definitely using some terms incorrectly here and there so please take them with a grain of salt)

Hokori to Ogori has four main musical ideas that make up the song. For simplicity, let’s just call them Pride, Swansong, This Is Tendo Maya, and Arrogance.

(Heads Up 2: In this word dump I use the term “motif” as a sort of general term for separate musical ideas. To be honest, it’s possible these are actually themes and I’m getting the two terms mixed up, but honestly both have similar definitions and I feel like as long as I’m carrying across the general idea of what they represent I’d hope the distinction between the terms isn’t too important.)

"Pride” is the motif. You know the one. This motif is the song’s main melody of sorts and technically introduced in the very first verse, where Karen and Maya are singing together. The verse that follows, where Karen is seemingly getting the upper hand on Maya, features a higher-energy variation of this motif. This motif eventually comes back, full force and dramatic, with Maya’s iconic YORIIIII TAKAKU YORI KAGAYAKU and etcetera.

“Swansong” is the more menacing motif that plays after Karen’s verse, when Maya comes in after questioning Karen’s motivations. Maya’s next verse follows with a more intense variation of this same motif. This motif is darker and intimidating; simply, it acts almost like a bad omen, a warning about what’s to come. In the context of this song, it’s about the thrashing Karen is about to receive (hence the name Swansong). 

“This is Tendo Maya” is what I’d argue to be just as iconic to Maya musically as the Pride motif is. A simple motif of three orchestral stings, it’s heard right before Maya steps up her game. It comes back fittingly at the end of the revue, when Maya reaches Position Zero and declares that she is Tendo Maya; while albeit varied, it still features that iconic three-sting cadence. Simply put, this motif serves as an announcement of who she is, her declaration of war, a sort of “You’ve Done Goofed” in the eyes of those facing her.

Someone with a better grasp on music can probably explain this better than I can (perhaps identifying the exact chords and tonal degrees), but what’s really neat is how this motif actually doesn’t resolve until the end of the song, at the second time we hear it. It’s like one huge release of tension that started from the moment we first hear this motif.

Finally, “Arrogance.” In Hokori to Ogori, you can hear it before Maya’s final verse (from “mikansei no kakugo...” to “...sono manazashi” and right before said final verse), as well as immediately afterwards at the final breakdown before Maya claims her victory. The fanfare and delicious rhythm of 16ths followed by the simple cadence of three solid quarter notes? Ugh. Love it.

Now, this revue is ALL about pride. It’s in the name. And other people have done much better analysis on this revue as a whole in much more precise terms than I ever could and have talked about its themes precisely. But in summary, this revue is very much about Karen and Maya’s clashing skill (or more specifically the gap in between Karen’s and Maya’s skill), and this pacing of the Pride motif reflects it.

It’s introduced with Karen and Maya on supposedly equal footing, both standing proud in their ability and determination. Yet it’s Karen who attacks first, confident (perhaps arrogant) in her abilities, and therefore she’s the first to get a verse.

However, while she’s able to put up a fair fight at first, able to carry her pride (and sing the same song) against Maya for a brief moment, Karen is ultimately seen as naive and arrogant for even thinking she can win against Maya, and is quickly overpowered (it should be noted Karen doesn’t get to sing any more lines after this). Maya goes above and beyond Karen; in fact, she literally sings the Pride motif at a higher key than Karen does. This is her stage, this is her victory, this is her song. This revue is about pride? Pride is exactly who she IS. This motif IS her. Which is why it’s no wonder she takes absolute control of this song and owns it, so much so that these motifs become associated with her to the point of being leitmotifs instead. 

I’d say it’s almost universally agreed upon that Hokori to Ogori is very much Maya’s theme, as a result. You hear any of the tunes from Hokori to Ogori and your mind just flicks to her immediately. While she technically has an official leitmotif in the form of her section in PRE-CALL as part of the stageplays, I’d say at least the Pride or This is Tendo Maya motifs could outright be considered her leitmotifs. 

So, yeah! Hokori to Ogori features incredible and equally memorable and iconic musical ideas that make for one hell of a godly song, one that perfectly encompasses all of Maya’s dramatics, sheer skill, and motivations.

The best thing, though? You can hear these respective motifs beyond this song alone.

Probably the most blatant example of this is the finale of Utsukushiki Hito Aruiwa Sorewa, aka the Mayakuro Revue of Souls. The entire final section is just one big rearrangement of Hokori to Ogori; with all the previous motifs coming into play, yet having varied and changed in the face of this new context; Maya has changed - Claudine has changed her, in fact, having revealed her “true” self - therefore so does the music.

Even better, even BEFORE the rearrangement kicks in, when Claudine goes to lob off the head of Maya’s bird-soul-vessel-thing, when she sings “Right now, the stage belongs to me,” she’s actually just singing the Pride motif!

Which is PERFECT given how right before this, she was mocking Maya’s revue intro. It really emphasizes how Claudine at this moment is really stealing Maya’s thunder, how it’s HER pride that’s contesting Maya’s.

Another detail I really love is how in Hokori to Ogori, the song ends with the Arrogance motif before closing off with Maya’s self-declaration. However, in UHAS, it simply ends on the new, varied version of the Pride motif as the two declare their rivalry/love for each other. There is no arrogance, they are made for each other, there is only pride in themselves and in their rival.

What’s more is that the song ends with one final variation of the Swansong motif, before closing for good and effectively ending Maya’s (and Claudine’s) final performance within the Revstar as an anime. Again, fitting, given Swansong’s definition.

But wait, there’s more! We also hear one of Hokori to Ogori’s motifs in a very different song, and that’s during the Revue of Astral Sins, in Starlight.

That’s right, we hear it in the final revue song of the anime, long after Maya has been defeated; it’s not the first of other songs we hear in Starlight, as the song also features parts from the tracks Karen to Hikari and Elle est belle: Utsukushii Hito. It’s present at the very beginning, but the motif especially becomes prominent once Hikari starts singing. You don’t hear it past the beginning of the song/revue but it’s very much there!

Why? Thinking back to the Revue of Pride sequence, during the sections where the Arrogance motif is playing is when we’re shown shots of Hikari rushing to save Karen.

In a way, this can be compared to as being reminiscent of that, representative of Karen being here to save Hikari; their back and forth of rescuing each other.

You could also see it as being representative of the arrogance of Hikari and Karen; Karen’s supposed arrogance in her efforts to defy fate itself and save Hikari, or Hikari’s own arrogance at her efforts of keeping herself isolated and fending off Karen’s love. Perhaps to keep things simple you could also read the Arrogance motif as simply a “rush” or “desperation” motif of sorts instead, something that the two of them definitely are whenever this motif is used for them.

Yet, we can still hear Hokori to Ogori in one more piece: Bridge no Ue De (On The Bridge). It’s technically a part of the OST and not explicitly a revue song, but it’s actually the first time we hear the motif, since the first (and the only, if I recall correctly,) time we hear this play is in the sequence right before the Revue of Pride itself.

In this sequence, Karen has just freed herself from Hikari’s attempt to lock her away from participating in the revues again, arrogantly rushing off in spite of Hikari’s efforts to chase her down and get her to stop. It makes sense that we hear the variation of that Arrogance motif here, and also further supports why we hear this motif again during the Revue of Astral Sins, especially if you also attribute this motif to the theme of desperation.

But then the main Arrogance motif kicks in, and guess what’s happening?

It’s Maya having a flashback to after their first performance of Starlight, when Claudine declares her rivalry to Maya in incredible homoerotic fashion. Proud and perhaps, well, arrogant.

It’s just brilliant.

I will say though as another additional point: contrary to this entire word dump, the soundtrack doesn’t lean into leitmotif usage too extensively, compared to other pieces of media that heavily utilize it (games like Undertale and Hollow Knight come to mind). Not including Hikari and Karen, almost none of the other girls’ revue songs are referenced musically beyond their respective revues and as such they don’t really have leitmotifs unique to each of them. Maya appears to be an exception here (unless we also include Nana, who I actually do like to believe has her own theme in the form of Rondo Rondo Rondo, but that’s for another write-up).

But to be honest, I’m glad for it. Unlike the other girls where their revues focus on certain issues they have, ultimately such themes that surround their revues don’t make up their entire personalities. Meanwhile, as stated earlier, pride is almost everything Maya is, it’s paramount to her character. So it only makes sense that she gets this exception, that she gets this piece of grandiose music dedicated to her ideals, especially given how said ideals are important/parallel to the supposed ideals of stage girls; Maya isn’t just prideful because she’s a top stage girl, she’s a top stage girl BECAUSE she’s prideful, after all.

So, yeah. Revue Starlight is a musical masterpiece as we all know and its usage of (leit)motif here as a means of supporting its method of telling its story is not only handled in perfect moderation, it’s executed beautifully when it is used. It’s able to take these memorable and iconic melodies and assign meaning to them to make what’s happening in the story hit just that extra bit more. This is just one of many examples of brilliance regarding Revue Starlight’s music and one of many reasons I’m in love with it.

(Though I will say this is only one of many ways of interpreting things! Things change if you consider Hokori to Ogori actually featuring the Bridge no Ue De motif instead of the other way around I’ve interpreted it as here.)
