First season wrap up:

Okay, to start, i should mention my general opinion on first seasons for shows, especially cable shows, is not to read too much of it as canon. The writers, producers, actors- everyone- are all trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t, so i give them latitude, particularly when it conflicts with later seasons. That being said, i do enjoy jumping through the hoops to make it all fit haha

So heres a few leftover notes i had as i revisited the eps to rank them:

I bet part of Lassie was craving the father figure in Henry, since we find out later his own father passed away when he was quite young. I wonder if thats part of the reason why he became a cop, as they are portrayed as the protectors and in the 80’s they were mainly men (i don’t really remember if he states his reason later, i suspect he did and im just not remembering). So when Henry didn’t meet up to the expectation he had in his mind, i bet it hurt a little more as it reminded him of what he lost :/

I think the other reason Shawn plays dumb so much, besides hiding his genius so ppl believe hes psychic, or for laughs, is because its how he gets people talking. Like in Shawn vs. the red phantom, he purposely guessed the wrong room number so the boys would correct him. My apologies if someones pointed this out before, i haven’t combed through the internet for everyone’s theories 😬 i only now noticed. I’m not the quickest at picking these things up lol

If i had to guess, Shawn didn’t want to be a cop for halloween, he probably wanted to be something star wars related to go with Gus’s Lando. So i wonder at what age Shawn stopped trying to please his dad. But also, why didn’t his mother ever stand up for him?? I’ll come back to her later -_-

I somehow missed it the first time, but shawn clearly asked Gus to come to the dinner and Gus even points out that it was a big deal for henry to reach out. Soo, yeah, shawn obviously didn’t wanna be alone with his dad, and even henry seemed nervous about it as hes pretty drunk.

Shawn has a right to be afraid of pointy things, his dad hid his easter eggs under glass when he was 6! Not to mention he later gets stabbed 3 times! (Also its just a legitimate fear???)

So far the list of Shawns knowledge (things i wouldn’t expect an average person to know) includes (beyond the obvious observational skills, deductive reasoning, reading people (poker), and all things police (marksmanship, police codes, etc.)):

Incredible spatial and physical reasoning skills (knowing how much money could fit in the duffle bag, knowing to rotate the water pitcher to catch the reflection from the tv)

Kurt Vonnegut (well, I didn’t know who he was at least)

How to spell aggiornamento (and probably all words because of his photographic memory)

Handwriting expert

Casually spoke and understood german

Has every road he’s driven mapped in his brain, and likely all of Santa Barbara

Familiar with paint (enough to know to mix latex enamel for no messy drips)

Animal tracks (i went back and forth on this but ultimately decided he must have known what to look for)

Chapter Forty-Four: New Roads

After Jim gave Jason the keys to his car, Jason drove to Reese’s house to surprise him. AJ was the only one at home with Eleanor, which felt strange. “AJ, where is everyone?” Jason asked. AJ’s face was drained of all color. “What’s wrong?” 

“I’m sorry that I didn’t come to see you,” AJ whispered, “I’m going through some—. Can you keep a secret from Reese… and everyone?” Jason furrowed his brows as he nodded. 

“Before you tell me, are you in any kind of trouble with the—?”

“No, it’s not legal trouble. I’m—. I got Mason—.A few weeks before you went to Greece, Mason came over to swim and she threw up on the deck… And I—. She never gets sick, so I—. She’s late,” AJ confessed.

 Jason’s eyes widened, and he plopped down on the porch beside AJ. “What does she wanna do? How late is she?” Jason questioned. 

“She wants to keep it, which means we’re gonna have to tell our parents we—. God, Jason. I feel like such an idiot. How could I mess something like this up? I feel like I’m ruining her life,” AJ frowned. 

“Well, I don’t have a lot going on… So at least you guys know you have free childcare,” Jason whispered. 

AJ chuckled. “Jase, I’m sorry. I’m whining about something like this, and you—. How are you?” AJ asked. 

“Everyone’s worried sick… And I just want to get my answers and move on,” Jason replied, “You know what the weirdest part of it is? I wish she would’ve kept me for a little bit longer. I’m getting answers in bits and pieces and the more I find out, the less I know… I know it sounds messed up, but I’m glad you told me about your problems. It makes me feel better.”

“Well, you’ll never forget your sixteenth birthday,” AJ teased. Jason laughed and nodded. “Oh, and—. Hey, are you and Reese—? It’s not any of my business, but he’s been over there a lot lately...”

“I wanted to—. No. I thought I wanted to when I got back because I figured it would take my mind off of how—. I wanna wait a while. Figure out some stuff,” Jason replied, “Is Mason on her way here?” 

“Mason’s in the house… You can go in and see her,” AJ replied, “And can you take Ellie? I need a minute before I head back in there.”

“You good?” Jason asked. 

AJ smiled and nodded. “It felt good to talk to you about it. I wish you could be here when I tell my dad,” AJ replied. 

“Call me and let me know when,” Jason smiled as he took Eleanor inside. “Mason? Where are you?” 

“Jason, what are you—? I thought you were at home,” Mason smiled as she came down the hall. “You look good.” 

“So do you,” Jason smiled, “AJ told me about your situation,” Jason replied. Mason laughed before bursting into tears, causing Eleanor to cry as a result. “Sorry, girls. I just—. Mason, you know I’m gonna support you no matter what. You’re one of my best friends. Also, I’m homeschooled, so I’ll be able to watch the baby while you’re at school.”

“It’s so weird, Jason. Also, I can’t stop eating stuffed crepes and kimchi. It’ll change your life by the way,” Mason sniffed. 

Jason set Eleanor down in the bassinet on her stomach before hugging Mason. “You’re gonna be a good mom,” Jason whispered. 

Jason’s phone rang. “Hey, Barbie,” Jason answered as he hugged Mason and waved. 

“I want you to swing by and pick up your chaperone tonight at nine. I told Daddy you’d be at my place for a few days,” Barbara replied. 

Jason nodded. “But I won’t be, right? Is that what you’re saying?” Jason asked. 

“Mhm. Come by here and pick up your bag. I packed everything you’d need—.”

“I have my stuff in the car already—.”

“You have new stuff now. I think you’ll like it,” Barbara replied, “And I wanna say goodbye in person. I won’t be seeing you for a few days.” 

Jason stepped outside and hugged AJ. “Okay, Barbara… I’m on my way right now. Love you, bye.”

“Love you,” Barbara replied before hanging up. 

“Gotta go?” AJ asked. Jason nodded. 

“I’ve got a therapy camping thing… They say it’ll help me… Decompress. So, if you see Reese, can you tell him I’ll be back soon? And tell him I love him,” Jason whispered. 

AJ chuckled. “You sound like you’re going to war… But yeah. I’ll tell him,” AJ answered. Jason waved once more as he got in his car and drove away.

Barbara snap buckled his backpack around his chest for good measure. Jason moved to unbuckle it and she shook her head. “So, which one of Charlie’s Angels are you sending with me? Kelly? Jill? Sabrina? Kris? ” Jason teased. Barbara smiled. 

“Think Kelly, but blonde,” Barbara replied. 

“Guess that makes me Bosley,” Jason joked. 

“Nope... Julie,” Barbara corrected him.

“Who?” Jason questioned.

“We haven’t gotten to that season yet,” Barbara smiled. She held Jason’s hand. “I’m not going with you.” 

“I know,” Jason answered, “I’ll be careful… And thanks.” 

Barbara pulled him into a hug. “Don’t thank me… Just come home in one piece. Okay?” Barbara replied. Jason nodded. 

“We still on code names? Or—?”

“You can use real names if you want. I trust them,” Barbara replied, “And they know me. I just wanted to maintain your privacy if that’s what you wanted.” 

Jason kissed her cheek. “See you soon,” Jason whispered as he headed out.

Jason knocked on her door wearing his regular clothes. A brunette wearing a navy cropped jacket and matching sweatpants answered the door. Jason cocked his head. “Barbara told me you’d be blonde,” Jason replied. 

“I usually am… But not for this mission. I’m Dinah… A friend of Barbara’s,” she introduced herself. 

Jason shook her hand. “Jason,” he replied, “Did she explain the situation to you?” 

“She gave me a location and a picture. That’s it. What’s all this about anyway?” Dinah asked. 

“Let’s head out. I’ll explain on the way,” Jason answered. His stomach ached, and he wanted to call it off. But Dinah was there. Jason drove to the airport with her, and they stood together while Dinah flashed their fake passports and tickets. Barbara set up their cover as a brother and sister going to visit their mother in Thailand. Andrea and Eddie Erikson . Fake names for a fake family. 

It’d be over twenty hours before they arrived. And the thought of spending that kind of time on a plane with a stranger overwhelmed Jason completely. He turned away, trying not to panic as he looked out the window, but it all rushed to the surface. Every moment. He remembered waking up on the plane ride home. The way the authorities looked at him when they arrived. His throat caught. “Hey, are you feeling sick?” Dinah asked. She reached over and felt his forehead. “It’s something else, isn’t it?”

“I don’t wanna talk about it,” Jason replied. 

Dinah shrugged. “Okay, but you’ve gotta tell me something. Are you in danger?” Dinah asked. 

“No… I wish that was my problem,” Jason whispered. He was half out of breath, half out of his mind with fear. Dinah squinted at him. “I’ll explain when I have to… Not a second sooner.”

7:30am it was too early to be dealing with this. You were sitting in the staff room early Monday morning holding the black envelope in your hand. It was your high school reunion or in other words when all the people you hated, get together to see who “accomplished” the most. You set it on the table and pull out some class work to grade instead before it's time to head to the classrooms. As you sit more and more of the staff start filing into the room. 

“Good morning (Y/N)” Barbara greets sitting down in her usual chair beside you, Melissa following soon after. “Morning” it's about all you have energy for currently your espresso still hasn’t kicked in just yet. 

“Whoa what's up with you? You aren't your usual self this morning” Melissa asks. Well, that’s not completely true you are normally a grouch but less so than today. Not necessarily a morning person you try to get up with ample time to get your attitude in check before you see the kids. “well...” you start to answer before Janine comes in “Good morning wonderful people are we ready for this marvelous Monday?” She starts going on a tangent about a project her class will be doing over the next few days, not something you are paying attention to, not with your own issues at hand.  

You have accomplished a lot in your life, you have nothing to be ashamed of so why be worried about this? You know exactly why it's because SHE will be there your ex-girlfriend of 4 years. And if the rumors are true, then she is headmistress of nevermore. You are happy for her, it’s what she always wanted even since back at your days in school, but that happened to be one of the multiple reasons you broke up she wanted to stay put and you wanted to go teach in the normie schools. Yes, the separation was hard but, in the end, you knew it would be better but for now you don’t know what to think. All these feelings are bubbling to the top old and new and frankly you aren't feeling today. 

“Hey hun, you okay?” Melissa askes. Your head shoots back up to nod “yeah! Fine just not fully awake yet.” Your response wasn’t really a lie but not the truth either. “Okay just checking” you can see the concern in her eye its brief but still there. That is another issue you have yet to deal with. Your feelings for the red head are not something you want to address just yet. You know that you like her and often she is running through your dreams, but she was never by herself often followed by HER. You wish you could get her out of your dreams so you could finally admit your feelings for Melissa. 

You don’t think it fair to her, how could you start a relationship if your ex still affects you like this. So instead, only in your dreams will you leave yourself free to feel the love you want to give so badly. To her, she with hair like fire, skin like cream and eyes so green. But on the other hand, to the other with hair like silver, skin like ice and eyes of blue. Both stunning yes, but so vastly different. 

You can feel her gaze upon you again and you can’t take it, the way a simple look from her can get you going is sinful and she has no idea she is doing it to you. You just decide to gather your stuff together and start your day. “y’all have a good morning I will see you all at lunch.” You nod your departure forgetting the same black envelope that has caused this panic to begin with.

You have successfully made it through the first half of the day dropping your kids at the cafeteria before heading to the teacher lounge. When you walk in the room goes silent as everyone looks at you, your smile faulters and you are suddenly concerned. “Everything okay?” you ask calmly trying to figure this out. “Why didn’t you tell us you were an outcast?” Melissa asks you can hear something there, but you are to stunned to acknowledge it now. “I-I uh what?” You studder which isn't normal for you, but with all the eyes currently trained on you, you feel uneasy.  

“Melissa found your letter. It has a crest on the front, and we got curious, so we looked it up.” Janine responds carefully. You let out sigh setting your stuff down to rub your face. This is not how you wanted today to go at all. But of course, it just keeps getting better and better. You finally look back at the room of your friends and sit down in your chair. 

“I didn’t think it important.” “How could that not be important? It’s a part of you!” Barbara looks hurt that you would even think that she didn’t care for you. You take the letter back in your hands. “it’s the invitation to my class reunion.” You look up at them “and I didn’t tell y’all because normies don’t usually take well to us. That’s why we have schools like Nevermore to protect us from ridicule and to help us learn more about ourselves.”  

You shove the letter into your bag and address them all. “I can see you all have questions” they all nod thankfully none of them look disgusted by you so that is a good sign. “My house tonight at 7:00 if I am going to answer anything I will need a drink to do it.” They all nod again as you pick up your belongings deciding to just eat in your classroom, you need to be by yourself for a while. Plus, you now have a dinner to plan.

A/N: you wanted more hurt/comfort and you shall receive... tbh it was hard for me to finish this WIP so it's a little rushed at the end but i hope you enjoy it! let me know what you think!!💚

You were sitting in the restaurant for at least 20 minutes, waiting for her to show up. The restaurant was nice and cozy, you were sipping on a glass of wine, not ordering anything, maybe she will be late.

Maybe she didn’t forget this time.

The waitress came to your table, her eyes full of pity. You hated that, but you had some hope in your girlfriend.

“Can I get you something to eat? Or are we waiting for a little longer?” The waitress asked.

“Yeah, we wait but can I have some more wine?” You smiled at her and she quickly nodded. And you were left to your thoughts.

That was the third date in two weeks that you had planned. And the third one that she forgot about. Did she have so much work at school? Maybe another late meeting with Barbara?

Did she not want to be seen in public with you?

You two were dating for more than a year but everything was in secret. Melissa didn't want to go public, you understood her. You both were working at the school, she wanted to remain professional. Also, you were younger. She always assured you that wasn’t a problem and that she doesn’t care about what people think. But did she really?

Behind the closed door, she was the sweetest person you could ever imagine but as soon as you were out everything changed. She wasn't your girlfriend anymore.

Was that too much to ask for? For her to show up? You were only asking for one evening. One dinner at that place you two were talking about for ages. Only one night.

You shook your head, trying to get rid of the negative thoughts. You didn't want to jump to conclusions, but you couldn't help feeling hurt and frustrated.

You drank your glass of wine and decided to call it a night. You paid for everything and left the restaurant and drove to your house, not wanting to see Melissa tonight.

As you walked into your house, you couldn't help but feel a little disappointed. You had been looking forward to that dinner with Melissa, and it seemed like she couldn't even be bothered to show up. You decided to give her the benefit of the doubt and wait for her to call or text, but after a few hours of silence, you realized that she wasn't going to.

You only send her a text that you can’t go with her to the Farmer’s Market tomorrow. You didn’t want to stand her up, even when she deserved it. You weren’t that petty.

You spent the rest of the night trying to distract yourself, but your mind kept wandering back to Melissa and what could be going on. You knew that you needed to talk to her about everything, but you didn't know if you were ready to hear what she had to say.

The next day you spend at home, slouching on the couch with ice cream, and your comfort show to make your mood better. To forget about yesterday's failure.

At lunchtime, you heard a knock on the door. Was your delivery guy that quick? You went to open the door.

Melissa stood there with a bag full of containers of food she cooked.

You were surprised to see her at your doorstep, but you couldn't help but feel a little relieved. Maybe there was a good explanation for her absence.

“Hiya hon, I wanted to make sure everything is okay and brought you some food, made your favorite. It’s all fresh bought it today.” She said with a smile on her face.

“Hey, oh thanks. Come in.” You let her in. A little confused that she didn’t bring up yesterday's dinner right away.

“So what’s up with you? Why didn’t you want to go today? Felling sick?” She asked as she was unpacking the food she brought.

“Are you really asking me that?” You said. You didn’t want to believe that she forgot. She couldn’t.

“What?” She asked clearly confused.

You let out a sigh. She forgot. It was clear now.

“We planned a date yesterday Melissa. I was waiting for you in that restaurant, hoping you show up. Hoping you didn’t forget the third time. Hoping I was important enough for you to remember.” You said looking at her. Your eyes held all the hurt and frustration you were feeling.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t realize...” Melissa trailed off, looking guilty. “Work has just been so busy lately, and I’ve been really scatterbrained.”

“It isn’t an excuse Melissa. It was the third time. The third time I had to sit and wait for my girlfriend to show up.” You said, your voice raising. You took a breath in to calm yourself. “I mean the first one, okay, I can understand. The second one was just a mistake. But the third time? Melissa, I feel like I’m not important to you. I understand that you're busy with work and everything, but that doesn't excuse repeatedly forgetting about our plans. I just want to know where I stand with you because I feel like you are avoiding being seen with me.” You sighed, your hands rubbing your face, waiting for her response.

Melissa looked at you with a pained expression on her face. “I'm so sorry,” she said softly. “I never wanted to make you feel that way. I’m so sorry. You are important to me, and I don't want you to feel like I'm avoiding being seen with you. I just don't want to make a big deal out of our relationship, especially at school, you know how it is.” She reached out to take your hand, hoping to convey her sincerity.

“Yes, I understand this. But it’s so hard when you are shutting me out as soon as we are in the open. We are in a year long relationship, don’t you think it’s serious enough to make us public?” You ask, nervous about what her answer could be.

Melissa looked down at her feet, clearly struggling with what to say. “I...I don't know,” she finally admitted. “It's just...it's complicated. I care about you so much, but I also don't want to risk our jobs. I know it's not fair to you, and I'm sorry. I just don't know what to do.” She looked back up at you.

“The staff at our job has the most understanding people that I have ever known. I really don’t think that will be a problem, especially when they find out that we were hiding this for that long.” You said looking at her with a soft smile. “And you know I don't care about reputation, I care about you more Melissa. I just want to show everyone how much I love you, how much I care about you.” Your eyes filled with a plea for understanding.

Melissa looked at you with tears in her eyes. “I'm sorry, I love you too.” She said, her voice shaking. “I didn't realize how much this was hurting you.” She leaned in to hug you, and you felt a weight lift off your shoulders. “I think we should go public. Taking slow steps, I don’t want them to have a heart attack if we show up on Monday all lovey-dovey.” She said laughing softly.

Relief washed over you, you couldn’t help yourself and just grabbed her for a hug. You felt so happy hearing that she understood your point of view. Backing away a little you took her face in your hands. “I love you so much, Mel.” You kissed her hard and she quickly reciprocated.

You parted when your lungs needed air. You linked your foreheads.

“I love you more hon.” She said stealing another kiss from you. “We need to eat that food I made. We don’t want to waste it.” And you smiled, food. The best love language.

If you’re making a butchered character roundup, Venti needs to be at the top. The fandom takes this deeply traumatized kind playful and free-spirited god who loves his lost friend, his nation and his people, and has saved Mondstadt from Decarabian, Durin, Ursa the Drake, The Lawrence clan, and Stormterror- to “ehe useless drunkard who can’t take anything seriously” And they call Barbara dense 🙄

Everyone on my page knows Venti is my baby but I'll be honest if I really talked about how badly the fandom treats him I'd never shut up. You can always tell the difference between Venti stans and fanon Venti stans.

Also Also I'm gonna say it: Venti being an alcoholic really isn't funny. I don't really like how it's handled in game and I don't like how the fandom acts like it's so tee hee funny funny. Like no he's drinking his feelings whenever he has the mora to do so or whenever he can sneak a glass. Poor baby stays smiling and I just wonder how many nights he's spent sobbing his eyes out with a bottle in hand because constantly being the happy go lucky person can not possibly stay when he's truly alone with his thoughts.

And another thing about his lost friend the only time I ever see anyone bring him up is to debate that he was fifteen. God forbid we talk about how deeply pained and how influential this beautiful person must have been to Venti for him to recreate his body exactly and then live the rest of his life making sure people never forget this person who he loved with all of his heart. But yeah sure let's start another stupid age debate that holds zero water because Venti is his own person no matter if he recreated his friends body or not.

And I find it extremely uncomfortable how the fandom seems to think he just took over his friends dead corpse and has been animating the thing for who even knows how long. Like do they realize how fucked up that is??

Not to mention the blatant disregard for Venti's incredibly soft heart. He saved Traveler's life despite knowing nothing about them outside of they stole anemo power from the seven and then disrupted his talk with Dvalin. He freed Stanley from the turmoil of carrying his friends soul along with him everywhere. He gave Dvalin, Mondstadt and Vanessa freedom, He created an entire city for his people to populate in, He calls his people his children. He's honestly the sweetest guy and anyone would be so lucky to have a Venti in their life.

People never talk about all of the good the archons have done for their nations and themselves outside of Nahida and it makes my blood boil. It's always "they didn't tell Traveler about their sibling!" Like it does actually make perfect sense that Nahida is the only one with actual information you dumbasses!! Nahida has a link to what is basically Teyvat's database! What do the other archons have their own SIGHT. Venti was probably asleep when the sibling came through his nation, I have no idea what Zhongli might have been doing and Ei wasn't even paying attention to her goddammed nation! She had a puppet running the show.

Let me stop ranting because I'm already starting to shake again. I just wish this fandom didn't look at everything at face value. I want more people to see the Venti that me and other Venti stans have fallen in love with. He deserves so much. Like most people don't even fully understand why Venti doesn't run his nation even though he EXPLAINS IT TO THE TRAVELER IN GAME.

2. Getting to know each other better

For the first half hour, the ride was uncomfortably silent. Finally, Tim had had enough of it. He needed to hear more about Chloe and Marinette. Not that he hasn’t sent their names to Barbara to see if she could find any background information on them. “So, where are you two from?” asked Tim. 

Marinette turned back to look at Tim with a slight smile as if to say that she knew what he was doing. “We are both from Paris, France.” she replied while petting the top of her dog’s head. Looking down at the snoozing pup with a smile. “We have been living in Metropolis since we graduated lycée about, your high school, 3 years ago to start our own company with another friend of ours.”

“Okay, Icebreaker questions. I absolutely hate them, but I am still not sure if you aren’t all serial killers, so let’s do this.” Marinette spoke up suddenly, not wanting to be too awkward. “What is one band or musician you would love to party with?”

Jason and Dick spoke together, “Jagged Stone!”

Damian groaned in the driver seat, even as he heard Marinette giggling behind him. “Of course. He’s all they ever listen to. Even Drake is obsessed with Jagged Stone, so much so that they are trying to find a way on to his stylist’s waiting list for custom clothes. Who is it? DMC?”

“Oh! MDC, she’s been his stylist since she was 13.” Marinette said while digging in to her small bag at her side and turning around to give something to Tim. “I will need to get your measurements and talk you about what you like style-wise, but I would be willing to make you some clothes. That goes for all of you.” 

Tim looked at the card in confusion for a moment, then looked back up at Marinette, “You can’t be serious, you are MDC? This can not be real.” Looking at Dick and Jason, he knew that he wasn’t hallucinating, that he just met THE stylist for his favorite singer.

Marinette beamed a smile at Tim, “It’s real. I was planning on publicly announcing my identity in the next two months with Uncle Jagged, since I just graduated from university. Also, partying with Jagged Stone is always ‘Rock ‘n Roll’” Internally laughing at the reactions of the three men sitting beside and behind her; Damn, she should have recorded this.

“Damn, you should have recorded that for me. I could have used that as black mail.” chuckled Damian, finally showing a small yet noticeable smirk while glancing at Marinette.

“Okay, here’s one. Do you have any secret tattoos?” Jason spoke up.

“If we told you, then the tattoos wouldn’t be a secret.” Chloe smirked. “But since you still don’t know us, I will say yes. We have matching tattoos that Marinette designed, we got them with three other friends of ours.”

“Yes,” Marinette added, “we got them after Hawkmoth was defeated by the Miraculous Team 3 years ago. It was healing in an odd way to be feeling some sort of pain without the threat of being akumatized.”

“Paris has heroes and villains?” asked Damian. “Since when, and why, was the rest of the world not told of them?”

“There were a lot of reasons for that, I think. A lot of citizens wanted to call the Justice League for help in the beginning but because of Ladybug’s lucky charm, all the damage and death that could occur during an akuma attack was reversed so that everything was, as it was, before the attack happened. It’s probably a good thing that the Justice League weren’t called in to help. I don’t think the heroes would have had a chance against any akumatized member of the Justice League.” Marinette shivered. Chloe was looking down at her lap, playing with her fingers, remembering the battles they were once in. There was no way to easily forget the horrors they have witnessed personally.

“Okay, let’s change this topic.” Dick didn’t like the sudden somber mood that started showing up in these two women. They had only known each other for a short time, but he had already felt protective over them. “Are there any other languages that you speak aside from French and English?”

Marinette smiled in gratitude to Dick, wanting to keep the mood light. Even though everything in her knew that this conversation was far from over. Considering her own cousin was a part of the Justice League, and he did a very bad job at hiding it, in her opinion. Clark didn’t even know that she had him figured out. 

“My mom is originally from China, she taught me Mandarin. I am also learning Cantonese and Tibetan and ASL.” Marinette replied easily.

“I know ASL, Italian, sarcasm, and fuck around and find out.” replied Chloe, smiling. Really just trying to relax once again. It worked, seeing as everyone in the SUV were laughing loudly. “What are the funniest insults you can come up with or heard? Mine is, ‘Your birth certificate is an apology letter from the condom factory.’”

Jason chuckled, “Nice one. There are a few. ‘You sound like a pizza cutter — all edge and no point.’ or keeping it simple, ‘You’re impossible to underestimate.’”

“To quote the Demon Spawn, ‘You’re not the dumbest person in the world, but you’d better hope they don’t die.’” Tim laughed at that one. “Jason was on the receiving end of that insult. Though, Damian will insult anyone if they start to annoy him too much, which happens a lot more than you think.”

Damian snorted, “It’s not my fault that you make it so easy to insult you. You’re all so dense, light bends around you.”  His reply receiving both laughter from the two girls and a round of 'Hey's' from his brothers.

The laughter kept going, and odd questions were a near constant as they made it in to Kansas and neared the Kent’s farm. They all went from extremely awkward to feeling like they had known each other for years. Which in itself was an odd feeling for Damian. Even at 20, he was a very quiet, reserved man. He was still quick to judge, but with these two women, he felt none of that weariness that he normally does when he first meets someone new. His initial thought of them being gold diggers was already proven wrong. Something that he was truly glad to be wrong about. “Have you thought of a name for your dog yet?” The dog had been so quiet, that you could almost forget that they had an animal in the vehicle.

Marinette hummed, “Fleur,” Upon hearing Marinette speak the dog picked up her head looking directly at Marinette, as if understanding that that was her name. “She is ma petite Fleur. My little Flower.”

“That is a perfect name for her, Mari.” Chloe smiled.

It didn’t take long after for them to reach their destination. As everyone got out of the SUV, they were greeted by everyone. Martha Kent walked up to Marinette with her arms wide open. She was glad so see her adopted niece. “Marinette, you’re finally here. I’m so glad to see that you and your friend are safe, dear. Clark told me what happened.”

“Thank you, Aunt Martha. We are glad to finally be here. This is one of my best friends, Chloe.” Marinette smiled as she introduced Chloe to both her aunt and uncle before giving a hug to her Uncle Jonathan.

“Bonjour, Monsieur and Madame Kent. Thank you, for inviting me to your beautiful home.” Chloe smiled, holding out her hand. Despite how Chloe acts, she had changed her attitude for the better long ago. She was no longer the spoiled little girl she once was. 

“Oh please, dear, none of that. Almost everyone calls us Ma and Pa Kent. Although you are welcome to call us, Aunt Martha and Uncle Jon or Jonathan. Come, supper is ready, you must be starving. We can introduce you to everyone while we eat.” Grabbing a hold of Chloe, giving her a hug instead of shaking her hand. Making her feel the love that was in the older woman’s heart.

Chloe turned to look at Marinette only to see a tall dark haired man roughly the same age as them run up to her and engulf her friend in a bear hug. “Mari! I missed you.” 

Whoever he was, he had one thing in common with Marinette even now. She was even now seeing the similarity in their demeanor. “Dear lord, there are two sunshine babies.” Chloe let that thought out loud enough for everyone around her to hear. Jason, lets out a surprised laugh. 

Marinette turned around giggling and called to Chloe. “Hey Chlo, come meet my cousin Jon.”

Jon turned around with a big smile on his face. “Hi, I’m Jon Kent, the other sunshine baby in this family. Please let me take your suitcase.” Holding a hand out to Chloe.

“Oh, thank you. Uh, I’m Chloe Bourgeois. It’s very nice to meet you. Sorry about that, I didn’t mean to speak out loud. Shall we go in?” Answered Chloe.

“Of course, follow me.” Jon replied, “Hey Mari, when did you get a dog?” noticing the young dog walking next to his cousin.

Marinette laughed, scratching the back of her head. “I’ve had Fleur for a whopping 5 hours. She’s really the sweetest.”

“I’m sure she is, Short-stack.” Jon teased.

“Hey,” Marinette yelled, “Just because I’m short doesn’t mean I can’t jump up to kick you in the ass! It’s not my fault that you are freakishly tall.”

“Sure, Mari. Whatever you say.” With that, Jon opened the door to let the two women and dog into the house before bringing their suitcases into the house to take them to the room they will be sharing for the week. After showing them where they would be sleeping, Mari left her backpack with the suitcases but grabbed Fleur’s dog food, then they were off on their way to the backyard where there was more than enough room for everyone to sit down to eat.

Jason:

Also a saxophone, but can play the drums as well. He’s probably tried out every instrument in Bruce’s arsenal though, and you can decide how good he is at any of those.

Tim:

He probably didn’t have much interest in interments growing up. Likely still doesn’t. One of his nannies used to play guitare so it’s sentimental for him to hear it. If he wanted, he could learn any instrument.

Cass:

Never had the opportunity to learn before she was adopted by Bruce. But afterwards, she tried out every instrument she could find and finally settled on a violin. Bruce paid for her lessons, of course, and opted to pay for any others she wanted. Cass still adores her violin.

Damian:

I can’t decide whether or not Damian learnt to play any instruments before living with Bruce, but he definitely learnt the piano at some point. He doesn’t often play in front of others, but everyone in the family loves it when he does. He’s amazing at it.

Duke:

I don’t know much about Duke’s character, but I can imagine he’d be good at brass or woodwind instruments. In order to get close to Alfred, he asked for clarinet lessons, and he really enjoys them.

Stephanie:

She’s good at the drums and bass. She plays with Jason sometimes and has proposed making a band with him, Dick and Damian, but still has to convince Damian to join in. Bruce pretends he doesn’t know about this just so they can continue to practice in the music room.

Barbara:

Can definitely play the guitar. Taught herself and plays it much more now than she did before to de-stress. Learnt to sing as she plays. No one apart from Dick knows about this and she has blackmail on him to make sure he never tells. He’s still considering just so she can be a part of their band.

Kate:

She learnt piano as well. Her and her sister used to play accompaniment pieces together and playing now reminds her of her. So she doesn’t play much anymore. She did, however, learn the guitar after she returned to Gotham and has never told anyone ever. Except her dad.

(Uhh okay so I forgot voice was an instrument until Barbara’s so here’s a list of those who can also sing:

Dick. Of course. Does it agonisingly often but is actually good so no one can complain.

Tim is bad at singing. But does it anyways when he thinks no one can hear him. This happens often on cases when he forgets his comm is on.

Cass took singing lessons when she was learning how to use her voice again. She’s still not the best, and can’t sing without a song in the background, but everyone loves it when she does.

Steph can also sing and is not afraid to show it. Does it all the time everywhere and remembers song lyrics like the back of her hand

Jason can but he won’t.

Duke could if he really tried.

And that’s all I have)

Okay, I wanna take just a second to talk about things I actually liked in the finale. (In roughly chronological order because I can't remember exact timing of some scenes.)

Stuff I already mentioned: The last ride of the Diamond Dogs, with Roy finally joining the pack! COLIN KISSING HIS FELLA AT THE END OF THE MATCH! Rebecca choosing to keep Richmond and share it with the fans! A women's team!

1.) Higgins and Keeley trying to get Rebecca to talk about Rupert's divorce. I relate to the mixture of trying to be a supportive friend, wanting the tea, and wanting the opportunity to trash someone you hate.

2.) Ted and Rebecca sitting right beside each other in a sea of empty seats. It was kind of romantic, but I also liked it as a callback to Ted and Roy sitting together in one of the earliest episodes. So I would've liked a little callback to the "This is what my ticket says" line which is an underrated joke, IMO, and would've helped the tension, but that's fine.

3.) I love Rebecca outlining how Henry could come over to England, and having a plan for Michelle, too, because she doesn't just want to pull him away from his other parent. She really cares about Ted's family. But then she doesn't mention Jake at all cause fuck that guy.

4.) Ted's approval of the team's good-bye dance leading to a completely over-the-top celebration complete with Trent taking off his jacket and whirling it in the air. It was so ridiculous.

5.) The return of Shannon! Did we see her in any other episode this season?

6.) Sassy roasting Rupert one last time. I love it. I love her.

7.) Beard going a little too hard on the good-bye video and everyone starting the match crying.

8.) Barbara.

9.) I really like how much of the match we got to see. I feel like it took up half the runtime or so? Which feels like a lot more than we usually get and I feel like that makes sense given what a big part of the ending it was.

10.) I love Dr. Sharon getting so into the match. She really loves that team. And her coming back to head up a whole mental wellness department was so lovely.

11.) The whole part with the BELIEVE sign and the fact that they kept the pieces close to them. I was a little skeptical at first cause, like, it sure didn't seem like enough pieces to go around but yeah, it got me in the end.

12.) Higgins seeing that Isaac is taking the kick and immediately trying to protect his wife.

13.) Rupert being chased off the pitch by thousands of people calling him a wanker. Poetic cinema.

14.) Ted doing the same dance that he did with his former team.

15.) The return of the Ussie Guy!

17.) KBPR! Complete with that one guy! I forget his name but I liked him.

Listening to Batman Unburied. It’s SO good. Bruce Wayne is a forensic pathologist and his parents are alive and he’s trying to catch a cannibal called the Harvester except it’s all in his head. Back in the real world Bruce Wayne is “dead” and Barbara is the real main character other than Bruce. Batman is not batdad in this, which is fine, but it’s weird that Barbara is a character but Dick is not.

WAIT FUCKING WAIT IS THAT JUSTIN MCELROY? THE MCELROYS ARE IN BATMAN UNBURIED?? WHAT???

I’m loving DC deciding to put Riddler in more stuff instead of the Joker. Joker’s overused.

So Bruce was actually getting better and healing from his parents death only to feel super guilty when he realized it and decided to push everyone away. Unburied has been reminding me of BTAS. Bits and pieces of things happening here have happened in BTAS before. The forgetting he’s batman, the psych evaluation with a lightshow,referencing gray ghost, living in an alt reality in his head where his parents were still alive, and now Batman feeling guilty he’s moving on from his parent’s murder while dating vicki.

So bc bruce tried to protect this tree, that’s what led to ivy and strange working together.

Obv he chooses vicki. He can always catch the bad-people later.

Amber: My little fire bunny, I love her so much. She’s always so bubbly and capable. My go to archer. My SO bought me a copy of her Baron Bunny, best Christmas gift ever!

Barbara: I want to adopt her. I know a lot of people find her annoying, but I just can’t, she’s too adorable! She just wants to make everybody feel better with her singing. My #1 healer!

Bennet: My son! My poor, unlucky son. I hate that he has trouble forming an adventuring team because of his bad luck, and it always makes me so happy to see him with his friends during events.

Cyno: He is my biggest favorite out of all of these characters. I love how he’s serious and stoic right up until he starts relaxing and begins cracking silly jokes. Some of them are hit-and-miss, but others are genuinely funny to me. I love how protective he is, even with the criminals he’s dealing with - if they are in his care, then no harm will come to them until he can hand them over to the Akademiya (and after that it’s no longer his problem 🤷‍♀️). And I love how nerdy and absolutely obsessed he is with the in-game card game.

I still need to get him to lvl 90 so he can replace Keqing as my electro character. And then Keqing can get a much needed break.

Diluc: He falls into two of my favorite character tropes - red hair, and fire powers. I’m weak. ‘Course it doesn’t help that he’s an honorable, hardworking, eloquent, rich boy who seems so incredibly lonely, even when he’s surrounded by people.

Gorou: Puppy! Puppy-puppy-puppy-puppy! He’s so cute, and I love how he has a huge sweet tooth! I bet he’d be nice to cuddle. Can I adopt him? Please? 🥺

Itto: Bestest and tallest oni! I love how carefree he is, he’s such a child at heart. Also, he’s hilarious! I love listening to him speak, his voice actor does an amazing job.

Kaeya: I love-hate him. I never forgave the smug-ass bastard for lying about giving me a new weapon if I found some smugglers for him. But damn he’s smooth and so pretty. And such a tease, argh! 😩

Kaveh: He has a heart of gold, giving all of his money to people in need (and subsequently falling for a lot of scams…) I want to hug him so badly, especially after the end of the ‘Parade of Providence’ event T^T I need more canon content with him, he seems like such a creative and pleasant person to be around!

Lisa: She reminds me so much of myself IRL, lazy and turning everything into an innuendo 🤣 We also look somewhat similar; tall with long, brown, wavy hair. Can I be a librarian witch, too?

Razor: Another son, little wolf boy, I love him so much T_T Please never grow up and learn how to speak properly.

Thoma: He seems like he’d be such a good friend, the kind to instantly notice if something is wrong and ask what he can do to make it better. But I can’t help but wonder how many people do the same for him… Also, he’s an animal lover, so that’s a huge bonus.

Tighnari: I want to pull his ears so badly! Not hard or anything, but I wanna see how flexible they are. Also, catch me calling him ‘ya big Valuka’ every time he does something I don’t agree with. I wanna run a plant nursery with him.

(To be completely honest, I kinda disliked Tighnari before I really got to know his character. I tested him when he was released and found his voice lines so boring. ‘One with the forest! Let’s nip it in the bud! I hear EVERYTHING!’ Big whoop. The thing is that the voice lines he uses in combat do not portray his delightful snarkiness, I had to wait for that until I progressed enough in the story for him to appear. Then he was added to my ever-growing pile of faves)

Xiangling: Yet another adoptee. I love her battle quotes about how she wants to eat the monsters and her ‘Ow! My dinner is attacking me!!’ And her summon is too cute! Just… please don’t make me eat her experimental dishes T_T

“Flashpoint”

Season 2, episode 9 - 26th December 1964

The way in which the first ever companion exit is handled is really interesting. By the time we get a few Doctors in, the formula for both regenerations and companion exist becomes fairly established, with either a choice to leave the Doctor behind, after which the Doctor is sad, or a dramatic death in the climax of the story, after which the Doctor is sad. Here, though, half an episode is dedicated to the slow build-up towards that speech which has been deemed iconic enough to be representative of Hartnell for The Five Doctors.

The decision is also not strictly Susan’s, although to say that Dr Who forces her out or leaves her behind would be misrepresenting things - Susan and David’s relationship has actually been built up over the implied time which passes over this serial (I don’t know how long it takes to walk from London to the Daleks’ mine, but it can’t be that fast) and it’s clear from the way she acts during this that while she wants to keep travelling with what’s implied to be the only family and connection to her own culture that she has, as a teenager she also needs some sort of stability in her life, and David could provide part of that, along with the rebuilding of the planet. It’s a shame that the show has never returned to the promise that “one day, I will come back” (although I’m sure it’s been done several times in Big Finish and with books etc) and also immediately taking on another teen girl does make it a little less impactful, but really this is a very effective exit.

Also it makes me excited because next episode is Vicki’s debut, and she’s genuinely one of my favourite companions in the whole show. Sorry Susan lovers.

Fun: 4/5

Production: 3/5, there were shades of it in the last episode of their first story, but this episode’s climax takes the hilariously easy defeat of Daleks to a whole new level.

Pacing: 2/5, because Susan’s exit takes so long, the end to the Dalek plot happens incredibly quickly and slightly out of nowhere, they just decide that one of Barbara’s failed plans from last episode will actually work this time.

Character Writing & Use: 4/5, in fact, the ending is so rushed that Susan doesn’t even get any scenes until her exit. This may have been due to production issues or scheduling during shooting (I didn’t check lol) but it does make her exit a bit of a shock when she was barely present earlier, however I think the strength of that scene makes me forget about that, I think it’s really good.

Depth: 3/5, as much as it makes little narrative sense and strips the Daleks of a lot of their menace very quickly, the defeat of the Daleks through mass resistance to their attempts at control could say something about antifascism if you squint. More significantly, though, Susan’s exit is much more character and theme driven than the often plot-based exits of many of her successors.

Not Ageing Horribly: 3/5, Susan does begin a somewhat irritating trend of female companions who get married off to side characters for no particular reason at the end of their contracts. That being said, this is much less shit than the other times that’s been done, since with Peri that was a last-minute retcon when it’s a miracle that episode ever got made, and with Leela they weren’t even sure she’d be leaving then, whereas here it’s clearly threaded through the story, and other reasons are given.

Overall Score - 19/30
