Maud had parked herself on an armchair in the corner of the room. All the better to survey the minor explosion of lace, silk, feathers, and buttons that had eclipsed their rooms over the past several hours. In the middle of it stood The Honorable Mrs Starkweather.

Mrs Starkweather's command of her temper was commendable. Really, Maud was impressed.

"No," Maud drawled, referring to yet another combination of fabrics that the dressmaker put before her. She lolled her head sideways; an open window permitted a breeze that caressed her warm face. She closed her eyes briefly, the cigarette smoke curling up from the hand propped by her mouth. When she refocused on Mrs Starkweather, her expression was as childish as it had been all morning.

"If I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times. I don't want to look like everyone else. I want the La Nouvelle Mode treatment. That's what I'm payin' you for, isn't it? To make me look like," she dragged on her cigarette, one eye squinting, "a lady."
