Character profiles - any information you've created about them
Links to your other writing profiles where you post writing or sites like characterhub where you post about other aspects of your writing (ie chaacters or setting)
Participate in STS/WBW - make sure to send asks! It'll signal to other writers you're interested in participating!
Reblogging or even creating ask games (they're a lot more fun/simple to create than it may seem) so that your shier followers can have a list of questions to pick from
Post links to your writing quizzes you've created to help people relate to your writing in some way
Talk about the fandoms that you write for, get people in the know about your fandoms first before introducing your actual writing
Worldbuilding tidbits - start a thread of just random information about your world that you can post on whenever you think of new cool info
WIP intros - similar to character profiles, create WIP intros that people can read to learn about your WIPs (these are incredibly fun to create)

Random daydeam-y thoughts you had about your WIPs or characters
Shitposts
Talking about your process for writing, what you love, what you hate, what you wish you could change, what you'd never change, etc.
Talk about AU ideas for your current WIPs and how you think they'd change the WIP as a whole
Ask open-ended questions to start conversation with other writers and learn about the massive different kinds of writers on this site (it's truly amazing sometimes just learning about how different writers are)
Think of something you're really curious about and just start sending it to all of your writer mutuals... see how interestingly different their replies are and reply in a reblog. Start a conversation.
Creature designs - create cool, unique creatures and post about their unique features
Make character/WIP appreciation posts where you just post all of your favorite things about a character or WIP you've created
Just reblogged a post asking what to post about as a new writeblr blog, and now I'm feeling inspired to post about this topic... so here are some ideas of things that you, as a writer, can begin posting (or can post more of) on your writeblr... this list is by no means exhaustive. There are sooo many topics, it's impossible to cover them all, but if you struggle to think of what to post about, here are some ideas.

Tips for writing black characters
Day-to-day practical and minor stuff, specially regarding hair
If you have curly/afro hair then you are only going to need to wash it one or twice a week
But it can take a while. When I had long hair it used to take me 2h in the bathroom to properly wash it. That's why I only did it once a week. But it really will depend of the thickness and lenght of their hair.
It can be a little harder to find products for their hair, because straight/wavy hair products don't work on ours
If you wash curly hair many times a week it will eventually lose its nutrients, differently from straigh hair
If your character originally had curly hair but straightened it, it's probably going to look a little drier than naturally straight hair. it's a case-case scenario, though
If they have a skin care routine or want one they'll also need products made specifically for black skin
Your character is not immune to sunburns. It's harder to see if it gets red depending on how dark their skin is, but it's there. The more melanin they have, the more protected from the sun they are, but it's not gonna 100% prevent them from getting sunburnt.
Oh, and it can be pretty hard to dye it because first, if your hair is very dark, you have to decolor it, and depending on how black it is it can take a while and a few tries to get in a tone good for dying.
If they have long hair they're probably going to take a while combing it because you have to apply the hair cream lock by lock
They may have a haircare routine every month or so. Not everybody does it but if your character is disciplined and wants their hair to be extra healthy and neat they'll probably have one
If they care a lot about their appearence they'll probably have a lot of hair brushes of different types because depending on your brush you can comb it in a variety of ways, making your hair look fuller, making the curls look defined, etc.

I think what I struggle with most is that whole “each character has a different voice” thing.
Because in my head and when I write, for me personally, I do think my characters have different voices when talking or like being pov character.
But then I’m thinking ‘but do they really?’
Because I never actively given them different voices. Like I’m aware of some of their quirks but even those I don’t build in knowingly but more instinctively.
I write them without paying much attention to their voice, not actively that is.
So whenever I try to do pay attention and ask myself do their voices sound different or like try to actively make them talk different it feels so off.
So idk I hope that the way my ocs have different voices in my head when I write them translates good enough into my writing because I can’t actively try and make them sound different.
#actively trying to make them sound different makes them sound unnatural sometimes like they’re not themselves#either this comes instinctively for me or I’m just failing at it and doesn’t notice cause I lack the insight#because I never actively pay attention to the way people talk in real life either#yet my way of speaking and/or texting is always tailored to the person I’m conversing with#so yeah it’s more of an unintentional thing for me#and I guess that’s why I’m not really good at this voice thing#or we’ll struggle to find out if I actually do it or not#it’s easier in povs than in dialog because I think Talon and Aiden’s povs do differ a lot. I noticed in the Christmas movie au#because I never wrote Talon before#i gotta do a ramble post about this topic too tbh#writer speaks#writeblr#wip: the knights of the alder

I fucking hate AI but heavens would it be useful if it wasn't such an unethical shit show
First, just to be clear, I'm talking about actually using AI as a tool to support your writing process, not to generate soulless texts made from stolen data instead of writing yourself.
Back when ChatGPT first became available it was still pretty useless so I had a lot of time to learn about how it's made, how it works and the ethics of it before ever touching the technology. I decided pretty quickly to never use it to generate text (or images) for actual writing and art but I still wanted to experiment with what else it could do (because I'm a nosy bitch that needs to know and poke everything).
And HEAVENS was it a blessing for writing with adhd
The last time I wrote more than 200 words in a day (outside of school work obviously) was 7th grade. I wrote over 8k just in notes the day Google's "Gemini" (formerly "Bard") became available to the public.
In order to not jeopardize my existing work I decided to make a completely new story with Bard's help that wasn't linked in any way to anything I had made before. So I started with a prompt along the lines of "I need help writing a story". At first, it immediately started generating a completely random story about a green tiger but after some trial and error, I got it to instead start asking questions.
What do you want the theme of your story to be?
What genre do you want to write in?
What time period do you want your story to take place in?
Is there magic?
Are there other sentient creatures besides humans?
And so on and so forth. Until the questions became extremely specific after covering all the bases. I could tell that all I was doing was essentially talking to an amalgamation of every "how to write" blog and website you've ever seen and telling it which part I wanted to work on next but it still felt great because the AI didn't actually contribute anything besides a few suggestions of common tropes and themes here and some synonyms and related words there; I was doing all the work.
And that's the point.
Nothing in that exchange was something I couldn't easily do on my own. But what happened was that I had turned what is usually a chaotic mess of a railway network of thoughts into a clear and most importantly recorded conversation. I can sit down and answer all those questions on my own but what usually happens when I do, is that every thought I have branches out into 4-7 new ones which I then attempt to record all at once (which obviously doesn't work, yay adhd) only to end up lost in thought with maybe 20 lines of notes in total after 6 hours at the table. Alternatively, either because I get bored or just because, I get distracted by something or my own thoughts about a different unrelated topic and end up with even less.
Working within the boundaries of a conversation forces you to focus on one specific question at a time and answer it to progress. And the engagement from the back and forth is just enough entertainment to not get bored. The six hours I mentioned before is the time I spent chatting with what is essentially a glorified chatbot that day, way less time than what I spent on any other project, and yet I have more notes and a clearer image of the story than I do about any of my real work. I have a recorded train of thought.
In theory, this would also work with a real human in a real conversation but realistically only very few people have someone who would be willing to do that; I certainly don't have a someone like that. Not to mention that someone doesn't always have time. Besides that, a real human conversation involves two minds with their own ideas, both of which are trying to contribute their own thoughts and opinions equally. The type of AI chat that I experimented with, on the other hand, is essentially just the conversation you have with yourself when answering those questions, only with part of it outsourced to a computer and no one else butting into your train of thought.
On that note, I also tried to get it to critique my writing but besides fixing grammatical errors all that thing did was sing praises as if I was God. That's where you'll 100000% need humans.
tl;dr writing with AI as an assistant has basically the same effect as body doubling but it’s an unethical shit show so I’m not doing it again. Also I forgot to mention I did repeat the experiment for accuracy with different amount of spoons and it makes me extra bitter that is was very consistent
#expect follow up additions bc I never manage to get all of my thoughts down on a topic in one post even when I write it over several days#do not use AI if I wasn’t clear enough#do#not#use#AI#writing#writers on tumblr#creative writing#writeblr#authors of tumblr#tumblr writers#writer on tumblr#writers#writer problems#oc

MODERN EXISTENCE
CHAPTER 1: MORE OF THE SAME
CHARACTERS: ✦ Beck Molleur ✦ Dahlia Molleur
story intro moodboard table of contents < last chapter next chapter >
(if it's possible for you to read and listen to lyrical music at the same time, please listen to the music provided ❤️)

NOTE: this story is centered on two characters in a codependent, toxic marriage. Exact content warnings about the relationship will not be given for plot reasons, so if you have ANY possible worries about that subject matter, I beg of you to be cautious before reading this story. Thank you.
Most topics are implied—haunting the narrative rather than being displayed openly—and this story depicts how one can be trapped in that sort of relationship. It has portrayals of depression, self-hatred, and implied abuse... although I would still like and encourage you to read it.

Countless images flashed through Beck's mind.
Flooded streets, loose wreckage of destroyed buildings, and rows and rows of suffering people.
It was always like this. Beck was constantly tormented by these kinds of visions. Visions of pain, destruction, and death. Anything and everything going wrong around the world was stuck in his mind, constantly playing again and again and again.
Whether he closed his eyes or had them open, tried going about his day normally or not, he was tormented by visions of misery.
Still, Beck now had his eyes closed, cheek pressed up against the back of a couch, and noise-cancelling headphones over his ears playing soft, calming music.
With his senses stifled, it was easier to focus on the visions. It was easier to see what he shouldn’t be able to see, hear what he shouldn’t be able to hear, and move what he shouldn’t be able to reach.
The soft music coming from his headphones calmed Beck. He’d seen so much suffering in his life that he’d long-since grown almost numb to it, but… that didn’t mean he was okay with it.
He still wanted to help.
So, when he could, when things were “a little too bad”, Beck made an effort to use his powers for good. He’d make small changes where he could—fill in a pothole that’d been untouched for years, trip up someone on the attack, make a stray noise to draw someone’s attention near danger, or manipulate information that could otherwise destroy people’s lives—and try to help people.
… for once in his life.
“Sometimes I for-get… the world doesn’t want me…”
A whole roof had been torn off its building by the vicious winds of a hurricane. It tore through the air, flying toward another home—and suddenly steered away, crashing into the street instead.
“And I won-der where… all of my friends are…”
Hundreds of miles away, cars were bottlenecked at an aging bridge… one that had long-since been shut down for repairs. Not that it’d ever been repaired—but still. It was supposed to be closed.
People were desperate to escape the hurricane, though.
They risked the bridge, and if it hadn’t been for Beck watching over it? It would’ve cracked under the weight of their cars, plunging them all into the hungry waters below.
“But then I remember… I’d pushed them all a-way…”
So much destruction, so much panic, so much chaos—and Beck did his best to help everyone he could in small ways.
To avoid detection.
For plausible deniability.
Few people believed in magic, so what else were they going to believe? That a god walking among them—one they’d otherwise blame for their misfortune—was looking out for them? Or that the wind moved just in time? That the bridge was just a little sturdier than the architects and scientists believed? That Their God, whichever one or ones they believed in, was looking out for them?
Yes. Far better for people to assume those than the truth.
They’d all agreed on that thousands of years ago.
“So where am I? Who am I?” the song continued, melancholic.
“And what will I do… when I don’t ev-en have me?”
The couch shifted under Beck, tilting him to the side, as something landed on his shoulder.
Beck flinched, mind abruptly returning to his body.
Snapping his eyes open, Beck quickly turned to look at what had disturbed him—
A pair of bright green eyes—on the most beautiful face he’d ever seen—met his.
Despite her soft smile, Dahlia's eyebrows were furrowed slightly in concern as she stared at him expectantly.
“Who will I be?” the song continued.
Dahlia was a woman Beck knew well, though her face had changed countless times over the years. Now, she wore one of a brown woman with angular features and a mane of long, curly brown hair. She sat against the couch with one knee, her hand still on his shoulder, and the scent of her lilac perfume washing over him.
Beck swallowed, then cleared his throat awkwardly as he looked away to stare down at the cushion creased under Dahlia's knee. Every fabric of his being screamed against it, but Beck hesitantly grabbed the earpads of his headphones to slowly take them off.
“Where will I g—?” the song lamented, before getting cut off for overpowering silence.
“Beck?” Dahlia's voice interrupted, warm and gentle. Everything okay?”
A wave of relief flooded over him.
Relaxing and smiling weakly, Beck hesitantly looked back up to meet her eyes.
“Yeah,” he said awkwardly, “just… was working on some stuff.”
Dahlia's soft smile grew faintly teasing. Then, she shifted to sit in his lap, her knees propped up against the cushions outside of his legs. Her hand moved from Beck's shoulder to his cheek as the other went to the backrest over his shoulder.
“Oh, yeah?” Dahlia asked, her tease leaking into her voice. “Like what?”
Beck felt his face flush as he pressed his cheek into her hand.
Letting out a slow, shaky breath, he turned his face away as he placed his headphones to the side and awkwardly wrapped his arm around her. It pulled her close as he stared hard at the headphones, still faintly emitting sound.
“Just… helping out around the hurricane,” Beck said, his voice subtly thick. “You know… without making it too obvious.”
He let out a small, pained laugh, then closed his eyes as he sank his cheek completely into her hand.
Beck's exhaustion leaked into his voice as he added: “not that anyone would question it, anyways. They just thank whatever god they believe in… or consider it ‘miraculous’ and move on…”
The entire couch shifted as Dahlia moved.
Beck tensed slightly, his breath catching in his throat. He quickly opened his eyes and turned his head to once again look at Dahlia.
His wife shifted to fully sit in his lap, leaning her forearms into his chest, cupping her hands around his cheeks, and meeting his eyes with a warm, loving smile.
“Awe, that’s sweet of you, Beck,” she said, voice slightly teasing still.
Then her eyes closed, and she leaned forward.
Beck took a deep breath before following her example.
Dahlia's hands dropped from his cheeks to rub against his chest as she kissed him gently, then slowly deepened it.
Beck struggled to breathe, but carefully kissed her back. Wrapping his arms around her lower back, he lifted her just enough to cross his legs under her and pull her close.
Dahlia paused the kiss—and Beck opened his eyes, though hers remained shut—to speak lightly against his lips.
“Did you know that?” she asked.
He swallowed awkwardly, looking down, not knowing how to answer.
She didn’t give him the time to figure it out. Instead, she quickly went back to kissing him, moving her hands up his chest and to his cheeks, where she rubbed his jaw with her thumbs.
Taking a slow, unsteady breath through his nose, Beck pulled her even closer and tried to just enjoy the kiss.
I love you, Ver, he wanted to say.
But he bit it back, giving her the moment to do whatever she wanted.
Instead, Dahlia pulled away after kissing him for a few more seconds. Her hands moved from his cheeks to his chest again as he met his eyes with another warm smile.
Beck was too caught up in watching every subtle shift in her expression to recognize his own relief.
“I reserved a restaurant for us to eat at tonight,” Dahlia said, a slight, sly smile on her lips. “Bistro Minuit is your favorite, right?”
Face flushing again—hotter this time—Beck hesitantly tore his eyes from hers to stare at the floor, past her hip. At the same time, he moved a hand from her lower back to place it over one of hers on his chest.
“Yeah,” Beck said awkwardly, his voice thick.
Then he gave a weak, dry chuckle, closing his eyes.
“It’s still open?” he asked, his voice weakly amused. “With how fast time goes by—”
“Uxi,” Dahlia interrupted gently. One of her hands—the one not trapped under his—moved to cup itself around his cheek again.
Beck froze, his breath catching in his throat as he quickly returned his eyes to hers.
But Dahlia still had her warm, slightly-teasing smile on her lips.
Her tease leaked into her voice as she answered: “of course it’s still open. I just told you I made reservations, didn’t I?”
Beck's heart twisted, but Dahlia's face was still soft, easygoing.
“—And, besides, I make sure of these things, you know that,” she finished warmly.
She seems fine. Nothing to worry about.
Beck forced a weak smile in return, but then sighed heavily as he closed his eyes and sank his cheek into her hand again. At the same time, he moved his hand from the one on his chest to cup it over hers on his cheek, lovingly sandwiching it between his cheek and hand.
“Yeah,” he answered, voice thick, but level. “You’re right. Sorry, I’d… I’d like that.”

Feel free to share your thoughts below, regardless of what they are.
Unless, yknow, they're "wtf are you writing; stfu". Or "men can't be abused." Keep that kinda shit out.
This is a very heavy story, and will touch on heavy topics... even if only through implication.
(Also to those of you who recognize their names... 🙂)

Hey quick question how do you imagine my voice sounds like? When you read stuff you write do you read it in your own voice or in a different one? Do you have a default voice you read things in or does it change every time?
I don't know who my default reading voice is; it's certainly not mine, but it's always the same one; she sounds quite young. If I want to, I can use any voice, dialect, and accent I want. It also works in any language, no matter which language the original voice spoke. I only need to hear a few seconds of a voice to do it. Sometimes even a hum is enough.
When I want a male voice, my default choice is Tobias Müller, the German VA of Shinichi Kudo in Detective Conan/Case Closed. He has a very pleasant voice.
Most of the time, I use a voice that fits the text I'm reading tho, whether it's for an actual character voice or just the vibe of the text. Howard Wang (Xie Lian/ tgcf) for a gentle voice, Ilya Welter (Lust/ FMA, ger dub) for a mature female voice, Shanspeare (on youtube) for academic texts etc.
There's that visualization of different levels of aphantasia using the image of an apple. I've had instances when reading where not only the voices but also the environmental sounds I was imagining were so realistic it confused me, and I thought they were actual real sounds. Using the same image as for the visual aphantasia, I added a level before one. Thats where I am.

One of the hardest things to do as a writer is make your characters realistically stupid about stuff that you, the author, happen to know a ton about.
Like, I know a ton about languages. But no character I've ever written has been a language professional like me, so it would be unrealistic for them to know a lot of stuff about languages. So I have to grit my teeth and write dialogue that's often full of small, unimportant (but GREATLY ANNOYING to me) errors, because that's what's realistic.
Anyway this is all because I was writing a character singing the song "Se a vida é" by the Pet Shop Boys and then confidently telling another character "That means 'that's the way life is'" and it caused me PHYSICAL pain
#writeblr#writing#fiction writing#cosmo gyres#personal#this regularly occurs with many other topics too. not just languages.#my main character never went to university and wasn't paying a ton of attention in high school#and more importantly he just isn't the kind of person i am: the kind who loves learning and reading#he's very interpersonally-oriented. much more tuned in to other people than i am#but he'd pretty much always rather have a conversation than read a book#(could not be me omg. i cannot relate to this guy. as much as i love him)#so i notice him and the other characters regularly saying stuff that's just not quite 100% correct#repeating common misconceptions and giving each other incomplete or straight-up wrong information#and it always makes me itch a little bit#but this is how devoted i am to the bit (writing realistic characters)#luckily it's far more satisfying to me to write believable characters and dialogue#than it is to have everything they say always be factually correct

My story is fantasy and include rituals suitable for only virgins. Is it okay for someone to qualify as a virgin for the ritual but socially aren't virgins. I would clearly define what virgin means in the ritualistic context, which is biological PIV, which is unfortunately cissexist homophobic and transphobic but make it clear that social definitions go way beyond that.
Please don't write this. There is no good reason for your magic system to have these attitudes, and also, virginity in general is just a concept that needs to die IMO. Consider this: sexual assault survivors should not have to negotiate whether or not those experiences change this particular part of them. Intersex and trans people shouldn't have to wonder if the kind of sex they've had counted, because what "counts" as a "biological" penis or vagina etc? Where does a clit and and a penis begin, and what counts as a vaginal canal? What counts as penetration? This is WAY too messy for something to have some hard and fast rule. Biology cannot and will not be able to be defined so strictly.
I want to be able to read a stories that actually fathom that someone like me with my body could exist. I don't want to have to wonder how trans and intersex bodies get sorted.
Overall, IMO, there is no good reason to continue the construct of virginity to keep living in fictional universes with literal magic systems.
I think this is one of those things where condemning it within the plot wouldn't be enough, when you're writing it as an integral part of the fabric of the world you've written.
If you need an equivalent: A version of "rituals for virgins" that I've heard before that I do like, is that "virgin" is defined as not participating in certain kinds of magical rituals before. The case I heard was blood rituals. You could also pick a different activity which has less real-world baggage, but maybe has some in-world baggage. Or you could rework it as defined by marriage, or some other thing. (Marriage can still be done in private, if the intimate information aspect is necessary.)
OR you could even have it SEEM like the magic system has the rule you stated (PIV virginity) BUT have the reality of the rule be completely different, this being a big twist where the people involved realize what they were told was a lie and reality does not have the inequalities they were forced upon.
