so i was reading a thing recently, and there was a metaphor used in it about tuning stringed instruments. in that one it was used in the context of tension, the idea of something being turned too far and the knowledge that it's going to snap at some point. which is neat, and what worked for that story, but. i had another thought
it was in a bit of a supernatural context, and the first thought i had when they mentioned it was what if the point where something happened was when the tuning was perfect. the tension is building, yes, but more than that something is changing, some tone in the air you can feel but not quite hear, rising and falling ever-so-slightly and then suddenly it Matches . and that's your big mystical event moment thing
idk i just think it would be neat. possibly something i'll use in writing if the opportunity arises

It must be a gas leak, he explained. Makes you see things that ain't there. Gives you strange dreams--did I tell you that? Woke up from me nap this afternoon and it felt like there was something standing over me with a handful of knives. Fucking Freddy Kreuger nightmares. This flat is shit, all broken and falling to pieces around me.
And his mates, what do they do?
We just don't think it's a good idea, you staying with us when...you know.
Waving at the TV, where a highlight reel of his wayward, deadbeat son rolled. Embarrassing too, the footage, the way his hair’s all styled up in a wave—just a little too posh, if you get his drift. James should've tried harder to put a stop to that before the twit ended up on cameras.

what do you think makes a story a “good story” ?
I think it’s very much a personal preference whether you connect with a story or not. As a writer you write what you want to and hope that it finds its audience. But “what makes a good story” is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.
And I’m by no means an authority on this, I’m not an expert in literature or filmmaking, I just like storytelling and consider it a big part of my life.
So for me a good story centres around interesting characters, is engaging, and has an idea or an awareness about what it really wants to say. Those are the things on my mind when I watch a film, read a book or fanfic, or write myself.
Character drives everything for me, having a clear idea about who these people are, what they’re thinking, how they are approaching the obstacles in front of them, how they change or maybe don’t change. However we feel about a character, if they are relatable, endearing, despicable, we need to feel invested in them and understand why they make the choices they do.
This is where it gets more subjective for me because we all have different preferences about what we like to see in storytelling, what interests us and what doesn’t. By engaging I mean I want interesting things to happen, I want suspense and lingering questions, I want twists and turns, I want good pacing and use of tension.
This final point can honestly be a make or break for me. I’m not saying every movie, book, short film, or fanfic has to have some profound, existential, philosophical message, it’s the age old question of “does all art have meaning,” but this is something I particularly feel strongly about as a writer, the idea of purpose. What drives the writer to tell this story? Why these characters? Why these circumstances? And it could be really simple or it can be more complex, both can be effective.
Again, a lot of this can come down to personal preference, but those are the main things that I tend to focus on!

My biggest tip for fanfic writers is this: if you get a character's mannerisms and speech pattern down, you can make them do pretty much whatever you want and it'll feel in character.
Logic: Characters, just like real people, are mallable. There is typically very little that's so truly, heinously out of character that you absolutely cannot make it work under any circumstance. In addition, most fans are also willing to accept characterization stretches if it makes the fic work. Yeah, we all know the villain and the hero wouldn't cuddle for warmth in canon. But if they did do that, how would they do it?
What counts is often not so much 'would the character do this?' and more 'if the character did do this, how would they do it?' If you get 'how' part right, your readers will probably be willing to buy the rest, because it will still feel like their favourite character. But if it doesn't feel like the character anymore, why are they even reading the fic?
Worry less about whether a character would do something, and more about how they'd sound while doing it.

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again
#yeehaw#1k#5k#10k#posts that got cursed. blasted. im making these tag updates after... 19 hours?#also i have been told it should say speech loss bc nonverbal specifically refers to the permanent state. did not know that!#unfortunately i fear it is so far past containment that even if i edited it now it would do very little. but noted for future reference#edit 2: nvm enough ppl have come to rb it from me directly that i changed the wording a bit. hopefully this makes sense#also. in case anyone is curious. though i doubt anyone who is commenting these things will check the original tags#1) my friend did not do this on purpose in any way. it was not intended to distract me or to hit on me. im a lesbian hes a gay man. cmon now#he felt very bad about it afterwards. i thought it was hilarious but it was very embarrassed and apologetic#2) “why didn't he use 🫵🏼?” didn't exist yet. “why didn't he use 🆗?” dunno! we'd been using a lot of hand emojis. 👌🏼 is an ok sign#like it makes sense. it was just a silly mixup. also No i did not invent 👉🏼👌🏼 as a gesture meaning sex. do you live under a rock#3) nonspeaking episodes are a recurring thing in my life and have been since i was born. this is not a quirky one-time thing#it is a pervasive issue that is very frustrating to both myself and the people i am trying to communicate with. in which trying to speak is#extremely distressing and causes very genuine anguish. this post is not me making light of it it's just a funny thing that happened once#it's no different than if i post about a funny thing that happened in conjunction w a physical disability. it's just me talking abt my life#i don't mind character tags tho. those can be entertaining. i don't know what any of you are talking about#Except the ppl who have said this is pego/ryu or wang/xian. those people i understand and respect#if you use it as a writing prompt that's fine but send it to me. i want to see it#aaaand i think that's it. everyday im tempted to turn off rbs on it. it hasn't even been a week

It terrifies Bruce, a little, that the first time Batman and Robin pull up to a mauling victim, Robin is acutely calm.
The girl is young, and Batman and Robin were made known to the scene pretty quickly as Batman scares off the dog with a taser.
Despite being the adult, he balks a little at how well Dick handles the toddler in front of him.
Later on, when the girl is seen by paramedics and the mother is finally calmed after being assured that the only physical damage present would be some scarring on her left leg, Bruce takes Dick out for ice cream for being so brave.
Then again, Dick was the one to threaten death upon his parents' murder at the ripe age of 9.
But the incident is filed away, deep in the archives of the BatComputer.
Dick is much older, and has seen much more, but he's still calm when one of his brothers is half-torn apart by a shark on an impulsive surfing trip with their hero friends.
Everyone is panicking because as much as they'd loathe to admit, seeing something that gory is so completely different than being in costume (because being in costume means they're at the very least prepared).
But Dick is calm, and his first aid more immaculate than ever.
When someone asks him about it, how he can stay so calm, he's suddenly 7 again.
He's 7 again and watching his Uncle-not-really-uncle getting mauled by one of the sick tigers. He's watching as his father rushes to help and calms the crowd down.
When he asks his father why he was not scared, he receives this.
"I was terrified for my friend, but panic makes your hands shake, makes you slow. He did not need my fear, he needed me."
Dick tells them that.

Any updates to your 5+1 Jamie falling asleep fic you want to share? 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Or any other work?
Thank youuuuuuuuu. I am deep into the post-season fic right now, so here's an update from that:
If that meant Roy had to listen to Moe's weird little poem likening professional football to the continued patronage of the Medici, then so be it. "—Even one who criticizes is allowed to do so only by the whim of its owner—" Jan Maas whooped along encouragingly. Richard, using the taller man as a crutch, toasted his wine glass and murmured his agreement in French. Isaac nodded along encouragingly with his arms folded and a thoughtful frown painted on his face, looking every bit a Renaissance statue. Next to Isaac, Colin's boyfriend leaned over the table to give Colin a kiss on the cheek. Next to him, O'Brien's eyes shone with tears. Given the way he'd been wincing all night, Roy was pretty sure his butt injury was acting up again. At the bar, Thierry flagrantly ignored Moe in favor of needling Dani to make him a Jager bomb. Dani cracked open a can of Red Bull. Roy looked away.
