Grief? That thing I write fanfiction about?

(My granny died last Friday and it's been a Very Weird Few Days. Not least because I went down to my parents' over the long weekend, and today I've been back at work making it all seem so very far away. Idk. Not really much to say but I keep thinking about how much I've writtena and read about grief without actually knowing it and now I'm not gonna ever unknow it, and yeah. Emotions are strange.

Actually the weirdest bit is that everything has mostly Been Very Normal and it feels like it shouldn't be but it is. Even at home it was very normal, let alone today as a working day. Yesterday morning I walked over tp my granny's house just to make things seem less normal because I'd never go there without her being there. And then this morning I was teaching ten-year-olds again like nothing had changed.)

Wow. I just posted my 175th fic on ao3.

Wow.

I never thought I could be a writer.

It feels.....fucking amazing.

I have loved reading and writing my whole life. I made writing a career for a number of years. I was a freelance guy. I worked for magazines, newspapers, private companies and universities.

I wrote news articles, profiles, product descriptions and obituaries. I did pretty much every type of writing. Except for fiction.

I always wanted to but I never thought I was good enough. I have been reading fanfic since 1997 and I always, always wanted to write my own stories.

But I never thought I was good enough.

Then in 2022; an obsession with Arcane and some encouraging friends finally got me to create my own ao3 account. You know what I found out?

I was wrong.

I am good enough.

I'm a writer.

Some stories are long and others are short. Some are dead dove and others are fluffy clouds. A few are super popular! And some aren't! I love each and every one of them. I'm proud of them. I'm proud of myself.

I'm going to keep writing because it makes me truly happy. My hobby, my passion has changed my life for the better. In every way. I don't just think I'm good enough to write now.

I think I'm good enough to do anything.

And I will.

Fear is one hell of a drug. After not writing for a few weeks we were afraid we forgot how we were writing certain characters or setting or…but once we started typing the world welcomed us back as if wondering where we went.

I still have my rough draft of the first chapter of Cataclysm. I was pink and green, and my mom was red. It's crazy to think it's published now... and I don't know why, but I don't have a physical draft of chapter one for Collision Course (or anything else). I don't remember why I printed this in the first place, but... there it is, and I refuse to get rid of it.

There’s something about remembering that the song I’m listening to as I work on my writing is the same one I used to listen to on the bus as a highschooler that sparks that good nostalgia and protectiveness. I look at all my schematics and thousands of words written and all the experiences I dragged my feet through towards adulthood and self identity, and I strongly will those notes to carry my love back to that insecure lost teenager who hated waking up in the mornings and going to sleep at nights and didn’t know what would ever happen in life. You’ll get through it. You’ll still like these songs. You’ll never believe how much can change while your core remains the same, like those songs that can suddenly yank me back through years. Also realising those core traits hold strong while you become an adult is so satisfying. You look at the kind of person you’ve always been and you forgive yourself for every time you despised them because that person is kind of cool. Look at all those thousands of words written, you’re in all of them whether they made the cut or not and they’re actually quite cool. And that song is on loop just like you used to like it.

Alright apparently I have SUCH a softness for that one moment where "Jules" slips out of Miles' mouth. I've never been overly fond of it until recently but just now writing my thing I really had to restrain myself because it's so much more fun if it's similarly infrequent and just slips out but at the same time it's just so soft and I just want to hear Miles saying it over and over 😭

Step one: put the words on the page

Step two: leave the words on the page, just make note of what you want to edit later

Step three: once all the words are on the page, read it over and curse at the problems

Step four: start rewriting the parts you previously noted needed fixes. Discover a dozen other issues

Step five: find better words. Put them on the page too

Step six: try to keep the writing flowing by working on a different project while you edit

Step seven: you can let go of words now
