"Efficiency" left the Big Three vulnerable to smart UAW tactics
Tumblr media
Tomorrow (September 22), I'm (virtually) presenting at the DIG Festival in Modena, Italy. Tomorrow night, I'll be in person at LA's Book Soup for the launch of Justin C Key's "The World Wasn’t Ready for You." On September 27, I'll be at Chevalier's Books in Los Angeles with Brian Merchant for a joint launch for my new book The Internet Con and his new book, Blood in the Machine.
Tumblr media
It's been 143 days since the WGA went on strike against the Hollywood studios. While early tactical leaks from the studios had studio execs chortling and twirling their mustaches about writers caving once they started losing their homes, the strikers aren't wavering – they're still out there, pounding the picket lines, every weekday:
https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/09/how-hollywood-writers-make-ends-meet-100-days-into-the-writers-guild-strike.html
The studios obviously need writers. That gleeful, anonymous studio exec who got such an obvious erotic charge at the thought of workers being rendered homeless as punishment for challenging his corporate power completely misread the room, and his comments didn't demoralize the writers. Instead, they inspired the actors to go on strike, too.
But how have the writers stayed out since May Day? How have the actors stayed out for 69 days since their strike started on Bastille Day? We can thank the studios for that! As it turns out, the studios have devoted so much energy to rendering creative workers as precarious as possible, hiring as little as they can getting away with and using punishing overtime as a substitute for adequate staffing that they've eliminated all the workers who can't survive on side-hustles and savings for six or seven months at a time.
But even for those layoff-hardened workers, long strikes are brutal, and of course, all the affiliated trades, from costumers to grips, are feeling the pain. The strike fund only goes so far, and non-striking, affected workers don't even get that. That's why I've been donating regularly to the Entertainment Community Fund, which helps all affected workers out with cash transfers (I just gave them another $500):
https://secure2.convio.net/afa/site/Donation2?df_id=8117&8117.donation=form1&mfc_pref=T
As hot labor summer is revealed as a turning point – not just a season – long strikes will become the norm. Bosses still don't believe in worker power, and until they get their minds right, they're going to keep on trying to starve their workforces back inside. To get a sense of how long workers will have to hold out, just consider the Warrior Met strike, where Alabama coal-miners stayed out for 23 months:
https://www.thenation.com/article/activism/warrior-met-strike-union/
As Kim Kelly explained to Adam Conover in the latest Factually podcast, the Alabama coal strikers didn't get anywhere near the attention that the Hollywood strikers have enjoyed:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvyMHf7Yg0Q
(To learn more about the untold story of worker organizing, from prison unions to the key role that people of color and women played in labor history, check out Kelly's book, "Fight Like Hell," now in paperback:)
https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Fight-Like-Hell/Kim-Kelly/9781982171063
Which brings me to the UAW strike. This is an historic strike, the first time that the UAW has struck all of the Big Three automakers at once. Past autoworkers' strikes have marked turning points for all American workers. The 1945/46 GM strike established employers' duty to cover worker pensions, health care, and cost of living allowances. The GM strike created the American middle-class:
https://prospect.org/labor/2023-09-18-uaw-strikes-built-american-middle-class/
The Big Three are fighting for all the marbles here. They are refusing to allow unions to organize EV factories. Given that no more internal combustion cars will be in production in just a few short years, that's tantamount to eliminating auto unions altogether. The automakers are flush with cash, including billions in public subsidies from multiple bailouts, along with billions more from greedflation price-gouging. A long siege is inevitable, as the decimillionaires running these companies earn their pay by starving out their workers:
https://www.businessinsider.com/general-motors-ceo-mary-barra-salary-auto-workers-strike-uaw-2023-9
The UAW knows this, of course, and their new leadership – helmed by the union's radical president Shawn Fain – has a plan. UAW workers are engaged in tactical striking, shutting down key parts of the supply chain on a rolling basis, making the 90-day strike fund stretch much farther:
https://prospect.org/blogs-and-newsletters/tap/2023-09-18-labors-militant-creativity/
In this project, they are greatly aided by Big Car's own relentless pursuit of profit. The automakers – like every monopolized, financialized sector – have stripped all the buffers and slack out of their operations. Inventory on hand is kept to a bare minimum. Inputs are sourced from the cheapest bidder, and they're brought to the factory by the lowest-cost option. Resiliency – spare parts, backup machinery – is forever at war with profits, and profits have won and won and won, leaving auto production in a brittle, and easily shattered state.
This is especially true for staffing. Automakers are violently allergic to hiring workers, because new workers get benefits and workplace protection. Instead, the car companies routinely offer "voluntary" overtime to their existing workforce. By refusing this overtime, workers can kneecap production, without striking.
Enter "Eight and Skate," a campaign among UAW workers to clock out after their eight hour shift. As Keith Brower Brown writes for Labor Notes, the UAW organizers are telling workers that "It’s crossing an unofficial picket line to work overtime. It’s helping out the company":
https://labornotes.org/2023/09/work-extra-during-strike-auto-workers-say-eight-and-skate
Eight and Skate has already started to work; the Buffalo Ford plant can no longer run its normal weekend shifts because workers are refusing to put in voluntary overtime. Of course, bosses will strike back: the next step will be forced overtime, which will lead to the unsafe conditions that unionized workers are contractually obliged to call paid work-stoppages over, shutting down operations without touching the strike fund.
What's more, car bosses can't just halt safety stoppages or change the rules on overtime; per the UAW's last contract, bosses are required to bargain on changes to overtime rules:
https://uaw.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Working-Without-Contract-FAQ-FINAL-2.pdf
Car bosses have become lazily dependent on overtime. At GM's "highly profitable" SUV factory in Arlington, TX, normal production runs a six-days, 24 hours per day. Workers typically work five eight-hour days and nine hours on Saturdays. That's been the status quo for 11 years, but when bosses circulated the usual overtime signup sheet last week, every worker wrote "a big fat NO" next to their names.
Writing for The American Prospect, David Dayen points out that this overtime addiction puts a new complexion on the much-hyped workerpocalypse that EVs will supposedly bring about. EVs are much simpler to build than conventional cars, the argument goes, so a US transition to EVs will throw many autoworkers out of work:
https://prospect.org/labor/2023-09-20-big-threes-labor-shortages-uaw/
But the reality is that most autoworkers are doing one and a half jobs already. Reducing the "workforce" by a third could leave all these workers with their existing jobs, and the 40-hour workweek that their forebears fought for at GM inn 1945/46. Add to that the additional workers needed to make batteries, build and maintain charging infrastructure, and so on, and there's no reason to think that EVs will weaken autoworker power.
And as Dayen points out, this overtime addiction isn't limited to cars. It's also endemic to the entertainment industry, where writers' "mini rooms" and other forms of chronic understaffing are used to keep workforces at a skeleton crew, even when the overtime costs more than hiring new workers.
Bosses call themselves job creators, but they have a relentless drive to destroy jobs. If there's one thing bosses hate, it's paying workers – hence all the hype about AI and automation. The stories about looming AI-driven mass unemployment are fairy tales, but they're tailor made for financiers who get alarming, life-threatening priapism at the though of firing us all and replacing us with shell-scripts:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/09/autocomplete-worshippers/#the-real-ai-was-the-corporations-that-we-fought-along-the-way
This is why Republican "workerism" rings so hollow. Trump's GOP talks a big game about protecting "workers" (by which they mean anglo men) from immigrants and "woke captialism," but they have nothing to say about protecting workers from bosses and bankers who see every dime a worker gets as misappropriated from their dividend.
Unsurprisingly, conservative message-discipline sucks. As Luke Savage writes in Jacobin, for every mealymouthed Josh Hawley mouthing talking points that "support workers" by blaming China and Joe Biden for the Big Three's greed, there's a Tim Scott, saying the quiet part aloud:
https://jacobin.com/2023/09/republicans-uaw-strike-hawley-trump-scott/
Quoth Senator Scott: "I think Ronald Reagan gave us a great example when federal employees decided they were going to strike. He said, you strike, you’re fired. Simple concept to me. To the extent that we can use that once again, absolutely":
https://twitter.com/American_Bridge/status/1704136706574741988
The GOP's workerism is a tissue-thin fake. They can never and will never support real worker power. That creates an opportunity for Biden and Democrats to seize:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/18/co-determination/#now-make-me-do-it
Reversing two generations of anti-worker politics is a marathon, not a sprint. The strikes are going to run for months, even years. Every worker will be called upon to support their striking siblings, every day. We can do it. Solidarity now. Solidarity forever.

resources for learning Japanese
I'm just making this post because someone asked me! This is stuff I've used and liked; it's not comprehensive by any means. For every resource I enjoy, I know a bunch of Japanese learners who managed to reach a high level of proficiency without using it.
First:
The person who messaged me mentioned motivation. I'm gonna play devil's advocate for a quick sec, so bear with me. Japanese, for native speakers of English who do not know any languages similar to Japanese, is really time-consuming to learn. I am teaching Japanese to a student rn, and I just had a conference with their parents in which I straightforwardly said: In the time it takes your child to learn Japanese, they could probably have learned Spanish, French, how to sail, and a bit of carpentry instead. I'm personally learning Japanese for a lot of different reasons: I want to live in a country where I can afford health care and rent; I love Japanese literature and feel intellectually stilted without access to it; lots of my homies speak Japanese; etc. But there are real trade-offs, and I have sometimes wondered what my life would be if I'd gotten super into Dutch or computer programming or moss instead. It's worth thinking about whether the investment is worth it for you, and taking the time to write out why you're doing this.
The Resources
Grammar
A very nice guy named Tae Kim wrote a perfectly good textbook on basic Japanese grammar that he shares with folks for free (https://guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar).
Bunpro.jp: Bunpro is THE BEST!!!!! Really thorough, logical grammar explanations; they routinely clarify stuff for me that I've never fully understood before. In addition to explaining the grammar, they have tons of example sentences, most of which have audio tracks with recordings made by professional Japanese voice actors. AND you can add the grammar points you're learning to a flashcard desk and practice that way. Bunpro doesn't just improve grammar, but it really improves your speaking and writing skills as well imo; something about the way the flashcards force me to think really works on my active language skills.
GameGengo is a super cool YouTube channel where one guy explains grammar points while showing you tons of examples from real video games. https://www.youtube.com/@GameGengo
JapaneseAmmoWithMisa is another great YouTube channel where a native speaker explains a lot of stuff that I otherwise don't encounter in textbooks.
Kanji
I like WaniKani and think it's been the best thing for me in terms of knowing how to read kanji combinations that are kind of "weird," unusual, rare, etc. However, it took me a long time to realize that WaniKani really focuses on passive reading skills and not writing at all, so I do recommend practicing writing on your own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn't own a kanji dictionary for years, but I've found them pretty necessary since I started focusing on my writing. Both of the above are equally good imo (the left is probably more readily available in Japan; the right is cheaper in the US). They both put the kanji in a logical sequence, from common to uncommon, and then have useful lists of frequent kanji combinations, tell you the stroke order, etc.
Listening
I really like FluentU, which shows you clips from native materials like movies, shows, commercials, interviews, etc., and then teaches you the vocab you heard, quizzes you on it, and shows you the video again so that you can see how much more you can understand. It's a little expensive to use, though (DO wait for their sales, which happen frequently), and you can definitely find a lot of free stuff to listen to online.
I love JFF Theatre, which has recently released movies from Japan, completely free to watch:
They used to only be allowed to stream movies for one month every year, and now they stream different stuff year-round, which is really cool. They usually have about 6 different movies at a time.
Textbooks
The Shin Kanzen Master textbook series, which is based on JLPT levels, is known for being pretty hard but is also v useful, especially if you're trying to pass the JLPT. The vocab textbooks are cool when you're N2 and above because they teach you tons of nuance between synonyms of words.
Misc
You can follow cool Japanese learners on Tumblr like @tokidokitokyo, @corvid-language-library, and @epivanosilon (and tons of other cool folks!!)
There's a fun monthly book club on Discord that's probably good for N2+ folks: https://www.tumblr.com/tokidokitokyo/785027373105020929/seitokais-june-english-book-club
Ruby Gagotoku on Instagram and Substack makes amazing posts on learning Japanese (she is N1+ in terms of reading), and she's really inspiring to me because she taught herself to read Japanese books while never having actually been to Japan. If you follow her, you can definitely find a lot of resources, communities online, and homies to learn with: https://www.instagram.com/rubygagotoku, https://rubygagotoku.substack.com/
Literally yesterday I found the KuLA app (くずし字学習支援アプリKuLA), which teaches you the basics of how to read kuzushiji (pre-modern Japanese script) in a cute way. I love how the little bug-sensei starts off so optimistic but then freaks out when explaining how hard it is to read pre-modern texts lol:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And remember: There's no shame in learning Spanish, French, sailing, and carpentry instead of this beast of a language that has uprooted my life multiple times and has made me go through probably 40,000 flashcards in the last decade lollllll ganbatte

Hello! Great to have you back!
So, I was wondering if I could request Ori!Yuu from Ori and the Will of the Wisps with all of his abilities, you can write them as is or humanoid- whichever you want, really.
And if you have no idea who I'm talking about or what Ori can do- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEadwXjlqy0&pp=ygUrb3JpIGFuZCB0aGUgd2lsbCBvZiB0aGUgd2lzcHMgYWxsIGFiaWxpdGllcw%3D%3D -Just use this as a reference for Ori's active abilities.
Also please note that Ori also has passive abilities being, Wall Jump (Pretty much just crawls on anything), Double Jump, Bash (Allows Ori to push themselves away from various objects and enemies, knocking them in the opposite direction), Grapple (Allows Ori to pull themselves in a straight line to various objects and enemies), Glide with a feather, Dash (Allows Ori to charge quickly left or right, even in the air), Swim Dash (Allows Ori to Dash underwater, or near the surface of the water to launch into the air), Burrow (Allows Ori to burrow through sand and snow), Ancestral Light (Grants Ori a 25% damage boost (x2)), and Water Breath (Allows Ori to breathe underwater)
I am very aware this a very large ask, so please know that you don't have to do it, I was just curious of what it would be like if Ori was in Twisted Wonderland.
Please get good sleep, eat as best as you can, and hydrate, it is very important!
Nah I don't mind, I'm happy that you feel safe to express your ideas towards me as well thank you for showing concerned 🤗🤗
I hope this match the character sorry if there's any mistake I mader
𝐓𝐖𝐒𝐓 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐎𝐑𝐈!𝐘𝐔𝐔 🪐💫
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ori is the titular protagonist of Ori and the Blind Forest, a Spirit who is separated from their biological and adoptive family and is thrust into a journey to save the forest of Nibel from a dangerous Decay spreading throughout the land.
During the first week ori!yuu would disguise themselves as human but their true form traits sometimes appear, like their disguise would tend to become translucent for a period of time due to exhaustion of overusing.
The student body would be suspicious over them theorizing between whether or not their human or not or simply a ghost or spirit walking amongst them.
Grim is slightly wary of them at first, thinking they might be a ghost trying to trick him, but he eventually sticks by them, seeing them as a reliable guide.
When I was searching for data about the character, ori in the game doesn't speak so it depends on your perspective if you want ori!yuu mute or not.
Ori!yuu is mute, always talking using gesture, expression and action but since they are waking up in nrc, Crowley decided to give them a small drawing pad for them to use to speak with students as well giving them a book of sign languages.
A very gentle individual rarely gets mad as well literally no one in nrc have beef with them because why would you want to have beef with this gentle person.
But also due to this revelation many students view them as weak which annoys them a lot. But they prove their strength during an overblot battle.
Ori!yuu is able to use spirit magic I mean they are one technically, they are able to use the magic around their area towards it's purest form so they technically don't use spells.
So basically they aren't able to use spells like deuce cauldron one or create something, they are only able to use energy like magic as well as elemental ones. But due to the magic they are using is pure it's by far more powerful due to it being it's original state. Example ace is able to use wind magic blasting it knocking an opponent meanwhile ori!yuu is able to use wind magic towards it's full potential able to create a large gust of win blowing everything.
So basically meanwhile students are able to control a small portion of water using magic but ori!yuu magic allowed them to control large bodies of water like rivers and oceans able to manipulate waves.
People would consider ori!yuu to be a nature spirit having a connection with nature causing them to able manipulate the area towards it full extant.
Small glowing motes (wisps) appear around them when they are deep in thought, acting like extensions of their emotions.
Animals and spirits in Twisted Wonderland seem to trust them instinctively, and ghosts often linger around them. As well the magic around them to grow more purer as if being cleansed by their presence
Would use their grapple ability to get towards places that are complicated to go if you don't have a broom or unable to fly, would use this ability as a transportation allowing them to go to classes earlier compare the others as well grabbing stuff from a far away. They are surprisingly agile, seeming to drift through the air rather than fly traditionally.
As well if there's a lot of people hurrying to get to lunch or a large crowd that prevents them from going to class they use their grapple ability to pull themselves and walk in the walls and jump down up Infront shocking many students.
Despite being mute, Ori!Yuu takes notes in glowing script that fades after a few minutes. Some teachers (like Crewel) insist they write things down normally, while others (like Trein) don’t mind their magical method.
Since they can’t speak, they take oral exams through written answers or use magic to project their responses. Crowley had to make a special exception for them.
They don’t eat much, if at all. When they do, they seem more interested in the sensation rather than the taste. Trey is constantly trying to get them to eat more. They rarely eat due to them absorbing the magic in the area and they count it as food.
Ori!Yuu is oddly good at following the Queen’s rules… except for disappearing randomly, which drives Riddle insane.
Rook is completely obsessed with studying them, calling them a "phantom of mystique" and trying to track their movements.
Students like magical creatures like faes are able to understand what ori!yuu is and they would held communication towards the topic of magic, Lilia is very fond of them as well as malleus.

Here’s some exciting music from a tiny, marginal Jewish community that’s recently been trying to make its voice heard.  The B’nei Ephraim live in Andhra Pradesh, on the southeast coast of India, north of Tamil Nadu.  They claim descent from the Tribe of Ephraim, and have been in Andhra Pradesh for about a thousand years, having migrated overland from the Levant.  As a teeny-tiny, isolated community, it was hard for them to keep up their Jewish practice, and the Christian missionaries sent in by the British did not exactly help matters.  But since the 1980s, they’ve been actively rediscovering and relearning their Judaism.  They’ve been learning Hebrew, they have a synagogue and a Torah scroll, and they celebrate the holidays.  And they sing!  More voices join the great chorus of Jewish song, and we love hearing them.

Dolly's guide to glow this summer ✨🐬
Tumblr media
visualize 💭
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We all have that dream version of ourselves living in our heads, but with school and work, it can be tough to actually bring her to life. Now that classes are wrapping up and summer’s right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to start becoming her 🎀
Pinterest and Canva are amazing tools when it comes to figuring out your vibe. When you’re scrolling through Pinterest, don’t just save the first cute thing you see. Instead, ask yourself things like: “What would she wear?” “How does her hair look?” “What’s her everyday makeup?” Thinking this way helps you build a clear, consistent aesthetic to aim for.
For the next part, grab that cute notebook you’ve been saving because now’s the time to finally use it. Grab a pen in your fave color and start by answering these:
How does she talk?
What are her core values?
What’s a day in her life like?
move move move 🛼
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fastest way to bring out your inner glow is by moving your body. When you move, you increase blood flow and sweat, which helps flush out toxins and improve circulation. This, in turn, reduces inflammation and gives you that radiant glow🌟
One of the best things about summer is that there are so many fun ways to get active—it’s easier to sweat and feel good. Whether it’s a 30-minute walk or a 1-hour gym session, simply moving your body is already a win. Below, I’ll list some cute and easy ways to get moving:
Hot girl walks🌸 – Put on a cute outfit, turn on your fave playlist, and stroll around your local park or neighborhood.
Incline walking on the treadmill – A great alternative if you’d rather stay out of the sun but still want the benefits.
At-home Pilates & workouts – Throw on a cute set and follow a YouTube tutorial (just make sure the instructor is certified). Below are some of my fave channels!!
https://www.youtube.com/@DaisyKeech
https://www.youtube.com/@MadeleineAbeid/videos
https://www.youtube.com/@MoveWithNicole
https://www.youtube.com/@LillySabri
nourishment 🥒
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The key to keeping that inner glow shining really comes down to your diet. When you regularly eat ultra-processed foods and lots of sugar, your body will show it, whether you want it to or not. This can lead to persistent low mood, continuous breakouts, and even premature aging. To fight back, focus on eating a diet full of fruits, veggies, and healthy fats. ✨
Here are a few tips to help glow from the inside out:
Struggle with getting in fruits & veggies? Try making a smoothie or looking into supplements—but always talk to your doctor first so you’re not taking anything unnecessary or harmful.
Add collagen & omega-3-rich foods like bone broth, chicken skin, salmon, and citrus fruits. These support skin health and boost elasticity.
Green tea + kombucha = goddess glow🌟 They’re packed with powerful antioxidants that help reduce inflammation, protect your cells, support gut health, and just overall benefit your health.
The (not so) secret to keeping your skin glowy and juicy is hydration!!! You need to stay hydrated both inside and out to get that natural radiance. When your body is well-hydrated, your circulation improves, more nutrients are delivered to your skin and cells, and toxins get flushed out. Below are some ways to stay hydrated:
Eat more water-rich fruits and veggies like strawberries, watermelon, cucumber, cantaloupe, lettuce, and spinach.
DRINK YOUR WATER!!!💦 If you struggle with plain water, try adding the mentioned fruits and veggies for a light, refreshing flavor (cucumber & strawberries are my faves) You can also use electrolyte powders, my top rec is the one from Ultima.
Alternatives If I’m not in the mood for water, I’ll also go for coconut water, tea, or 100% fruit juice (make sure it’s not from concentrate!).
Tumblr media
skin 🧖‍♀️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When it comes to soft, shiny skin, exfoliation + hydration is the ultimate duo (with consistency of course) I like to focus on hydration during the day and exfoliation at night, since your skin is more sensitive to the sun after exfoliating.
DRY BRUSH, DRY BRUSH, DRY BRUSH!!! I've seen such a drastic difference in my skin texture since doing it consistently, especially paired with a good scrub.
About body scrubs... I know it hurts to hear this, but ditch the sweet scented ones and invest in a good chemical body scrub with AHA, BHA, or glycolic acid. They penetrate the skin and dissolve dead skin cells more efficiently and promote cell turn over leading to smoother & brighter skin.
If you’re prone to dry skin like me, skip the pricey body oils and pick up a petroleum based product like Vaseline or Aquaphor. Petroleum creates a barrier that locks in moisture, effectively preventing moisture loss and it works so well.
SPF!!!!!!!☀️I cannot stress this enough—protect your skin, always.
This is the first time i've ever made a long post like this, i hope it was helpful !!! please reach out if you have any questions, stay gorgeous dolls 🐬🫧🌸

Readers new and seasoned. THANK YOU all for rocking with OT/NT for all of these years now. I started OT/NT in 2012 and it's still going strong. We have reached 100,000 reblogs and have over 9,600 readers. You all have stuck out with me here for all of these year even though I have been absent. And that I am TRULY sorry for.
The continued activity here have made me realize that I have made a mistake and should have continued to scan and blog. So, OT/NT will be coming back. Not only is it coming back but I will be expanding on the content. Here on tumblr, the focus will still be on scans but I will cross post content from YouTube. YouTube/video content will be mix of anime and anime adjacent/Japanese physical media related topics that will be in various forms (books, magazines, VHS, etc.).
I hope you all still continue to read and support my efforts to bring you all the cool anime physical media content from the past. This time around, we're back like it's 2012.

The Pizzaburger Presidency
Tumblr media
For the rest of May, my bestselling solarpunk utopian novel THE LOST CAUSE (2023) is available as a $2.99, DRM-free ebook!
Tumblr media
The corporate wing of the Democrats has objectively terrible political instincts, because the corporate wing of the Dems wants things that are very unpopular with the electorate (this is a trait they share with the Republican establishment).
Remember Hillary Clinton's unimaginably terrible campaign slogan, "America is already great?" In other words, "Vote for me if you believe that nothing needs to change":
https://twitter.com/HillaryClinton/status/758501814945869824
Biden picked up the "This is fine" messaging where Clinton left off, promising that "nothing would fundamentally change" if he became president:
https://www.salon.com/2019/06/19/joe-biden-to-rich-donors-nothing-would-fundamentally-change-if-hes-elected/
Biden didn't so much win that election as Trump lost it, by doing extremely unpopular things, including badly bungling the American covid response and killing about a million people.
Biden's 2020 election victory was a squeaker, and it was absolutely dependent on compromising with the party's left wing, embodied by the Warren and Sanders campaigns. The Unity Task Force promised – and delivered – key appointments and policies that represented serious and powerful change for the better:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/10/thanks-obama/#triangulation
Despite these excellent appointments and policies, the Biden administration has remained unpopular and is heading into the 2024 election with worryingly poor numbers. There is a lot of debate about why this might be. It's undeniable that every leader who has presided over a period of inflation, irrespective of political tendency, is facing extreme defenstration, from Rishi Sunak, the far-right prime minister of the UK, to the relentlessly centrist Justin Trudeau in Canada:
https://prospect.org/politics/2024-05-29-three-barriers-biden-reelection/
It's also true that Biden has presided over a genocide, which he has been proudly and significantly complicit in. That Trump would have done the same or worse is beside the point. A political leader who does things that the voters deplore can't expect to become more popular, though perhaps they can pull off less unpopular:
https://www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/the-left-is-not-joe-bidens-problem
Biden may be attracting unfair blame for inflation, and totally fair blame for genocide, but in addition to those problems, there's this: Biden hasn't gotten credit for the actual good things he's done:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoflHnGrCpM
Writing in his newsletter, Matt Stoller offers an explanation for this lack of credit: the Biden White House almost never talks about any of these triumphs, even the bold, generational ones that will significantly alter the political landscape no matter who wins the next election:
https://www.thebignewsletter.com/p/why-does-the-biden-white-house-hate
Biden's antitrust enforcers have gone after price-fixing in oil, food and rent – the three largest sources of voter cost-of-living concern. They've done more on these three kinds of crime than all of their predecessors over the past forty years, combined. And yet, Stoller finds example after example of White House press secretaries being lobbed softballs by the press and refusing to even try to swing at them. When asked about any of this stuff, the White House demurs, refusing to comment.
The reasons they give for this is that they don't want to mess up an active case while it's before the courts. But that's not how this works. Yes, misstatements about active cases can do serious damage, but not talking about cases extinguishes the political will needed to carry them out. That's why a competent press secretary excellent briefings and training, because they must talk about these cases.
Think for a moment about the fact that the US government is – at this very moment – trying to break up Google, the largest tech company in the history of the world, and there has been virtually no press about it. This is a gigantic story. It's literally the biggest business story ever. It's practically a secret.
Why doesn't the Biden admin want to talk about this very small number of very good things it's doing? To understand that, you have to understand the hollowness of "centrist" politics as practiced in the Democratic Party.
The Democrats, like all political parties, are a coalition. Now, there are lots of ways to keep a coalition together. Parties who detest one another can stay in coalition provided that each partner is getting something they want out of it – even if one partner is bitterly unhappy about everything else happening in the coalition. That's the present-day Democratic approach: arrest students, bomb Gaza, but promise to do something about abortion and a few other issues while gesturing with real and justified alarm at Trump's open fascism, and hope that the party's left turns out at the polls this fall.
Leaders who play this game can't announce that they are deliberately making a vital coalition partner miserable and furious. Instead, they insist that they are "compromising" and point to the fact that "everyone is equally unhappy" with the way things are going.
This school of politics – "Everyone is angry at me, therefore I am doing something right" – has a name, courtesy of Anat Shenker-Osorio: "Pizzaburger politics." Say half your family wants burgers for dinner and the other half wants pizza: make a pizzaburger and disappoint all of them, and declare yourself to be a politics genius:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/06/17/pizzaburgers/
But Biden's Pizzaburger Presidency doesn't disappoint everyone equally. Sure, Biden appointed some brilliant antitrust enforcers to begin the long project of smashing the corporate juggernauts built through forty years of Reaganomics (including the Reganomics of Bill Clinton and Obama). But his lifetime federal judicial appointments are drawn heavily from the corporate wing of the party's darlings, and those judges will spend the rest of their lives ruling against the kinds of enforcers Biden put in charge of the FTC and DoJ antitrust division:
https://www.thebignewsletter.com/p/judge-rules-for-microsoft-mergers
So that's one reason that Biden's comms team won't talk about his most successful and popular policies. But there's another reason: schismogenesis.
"Schismogenesis" is a anthropological concept describing how groups define themselves in opposition to their opponents (if they're for it, we're against it). Think of the liberals who became cheerleaders for the "intelligence community" (you know the CIA spies who organized murderous coups against a dozen Latin American democracies, and the FBI agents who tried to get MLK to kill himself) as soon as Trump and his allies began to rail against them:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/12/18/schizmogenesis/
Part of Trump's takeover of conservativism is a revival of "the paranoid style" of the American right – the conspiratorial, unhinged apocalyptic rhetoric that the movement's leaders are no longer capable of keeping a lid on:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/06/16/that-boy-aint-right/#dinos-rinos-and-dunnos
This stuff – the lizard-people/Bilderberg/blood libel/antisemitic/Great Replacement/race realist/gender critical whackadoodlery – was always in conservative rhetoric, but it was reserved for internal communications, a way to talk to low-information voters in private forums. It wasn't supposed to make it into your campaign ads:
https://www.statesman.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/05/27/texas-republicans-adopts-conservative-wish-list-for-the-2024-platform/73858798007/
Today's conservative vibe is all about saying the quiet part aloud. Historian Rick Perlstein calls this the "authoritarian ratchet": conservativism promises a return to a "prelapsarian" state, before the country lost its way:
https://prospect.org/politics/2024-05-29-my-political-depression-problem/
This is presented as imperative: unless we restore that mythical order, the country is doomed. We might just be the last generation of free Americans!
But that state never existed, and can never be recovered, but it doesn't matter. When conservatives lose a fight they declare to be existential (say, trans bathroom bans), they just pretend they never cared about it and move on to the next panic.
It's actually worse for them when they win. When the GOP repeals Roe, or takes the Presidency, the Senate and Congress, and still fails to restore that lost glory, then they have to find someone or something to blame. They turn on themselves, purging their ranks, promise ever-more-unhinged policies that will finally restore the state that never existed.
This is where schismogenesis comes in. If the GOP is making big, bold promises, then a shismogenesis-poisoned liberal will insist that the Dems must be "the party of normal." If the GOP's radical wing is taking the upper hand, then the Dems must be the party whose radical wing is marginalized (see also: UK Labour).
This is the trap of schismogenesis. It's possible for the things your opponents do to be wrong, but tactically sound (like promising the big changes that voters want). The difference you should seek to establish between yourself and your enemies isn't in promising to maintaining the status quo – it's in promising to make better, big muscular changes, and keeping those promises.
It's possible to acknowledge that an odious institution to do something good – like the CIA and FBI trying to wrongfoot Trump's most unhinged policies – without becoming a stan for that institution, and without abandoning your stance that the institution should either be root-and-branch reformed or abolished altogether.
The mere fact that your enemy uses a sound tactic to do something bad doesn't make that tactic invalid. As Naomi Klein writes in her magnificent Doppelganger, the right's genius is in co-opting progressive rhetoric and making it mean the opposite: think of their ownership of "fake news" or the equivalence of transphobia with feminism, of opposition to genocide with antisemitism:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/05/not-that-naomi/#if-the-naomi-be-klein-youre-doing-just-fine
Promising bold policies and then talking about them in plain language at every opportunity is something demagogues do, but having bold policies and talking about them doesn't make you a demagogue.
The reason demagogues talk that way is that it works. It captures the interest of potential followers, and keeps existing followers excited about the project.
Choosing not to do these things is political suicide. Good politics aren't boring. They're exciting. The fact that Republicans use eschatological rhetoric to motivate crazed insurrectionists who think they're the last hope for a good future doesn't change the fact that we are at a critical juncture for a survivable future.
If the GOP wins this coming election – or when Pierre Poilievre's petro-tories win the next Canadian election – they will do everything they can to set the planet on fire and render it permanently uninhabitable by humans and other animals. We are running out of time.
We can't afford to cede this ground to the right. Remember the clickbait wars? Low-quality websites and Facebook accounts got really good at ginning up misleading, compelling headlines that attracted a lot of monetizable clicks.
For a certain kind of online scolding centrist, the lesson from this era was that headlines should a) be boring and b) not leave out any salient fact. This is very bad headline-writing advice. While it claims to be in service to thoughtfulness and nuance, it misses out on the most important nuance of all: there's a difference between a misleading headline and a headline that calls out the most salient element of the story and then fleshes that out with more detail in the body of the article. If a headline completely summarizes the article, it's not a headline, it's an abstract.
Biden's comms team isn't bragging about the administration's accomplishments, because the senior partners in this coalition oppose those accomplishments. They don't want to win an election based on the promise to prosecute and anti-corporate revolution, because they are counter-revolutionaries.
The Democratic coalition has some irredeemably terrible elements. It also has elements that I would march into the sun for. The party itself is a very weak institution that's bad at resolving the tension between both groups:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/30/weak-institutions/
Pizzaburgers don't make anyone happy and they're not supposed to. They're a convenient cover for the winners of intraparty struggles to keep the losers from staying home on election day. I don't know how Biden can win this coming election, but I know how he can lose it: keep on reminding us that all the good things about his administration were undertaken reluctantly and could be jettisoned in a second Biden administration.

your honor, I love them
ok anon how did you know the exact one I wanted to go insane over lshdslhvds;v
ok to fully repeat myself but the immediate pivot Oscar did from nodding along with how different their weekends were, to then going along with Lando's joke of pretending not to know what the host is talking about. AND THEN Lando's appreciative smile when Oscar confirms he doesn't know what they're talking about ! ;__;
Tumblr media
and then the way he COMPLETELY downplays his own podium and credits the Max and Lando collision for helping him out and wraps it up bc he knows what they all want to actually discuss.
1:40 that little smile from Oscar is like… the thing is that when Oscar DOES have expressions on his face they're as unfiltered as Lando. you can see the progression of fondness and oh Lando and I love him but also is he getting himself in trouble again.
Tumblr media
and then as Lando kept talking about that moment and how in racing they actually do enjoy a battle, he keeps looking to Oscar because this has been Lando's preoccupation ever since he's really embraced Oscar as a teammate and understood their relationship. with Carlos and Daniel, there was that broey chumminess but also 'yea we're gonna piss each other off sometimes' kind of thing and it's very much how they are with all the drivers they're buddies with. but Oscar is so different from the other drivers and has such a unique and strangely gentle and considerate relationship with Lando that it makes him squirm quite a bit thinking of one day actually having moments like these with him! he's frequently the one saying things like 'we both have the same goals for the team' and 'yes we're rivals but we have to think what's best for the team' almost in a way of wanting to remind himself and Oscar not to do any damage to their relationship. Lando's someone who has his friends who are buddies with very few strings attached and are easygoing, and then his friends who are part of his like actual support unit who've taken the time to Learn Lando's Brain. Oscar's done just that since day one (and before tbh) and Lando hasn't hidden at all how he's come to rely on Oscar to be patiently waiting and be so calm and balanced and in possession of himself.
and that shows in how all of these interviews today - tbh in just all of their interviews - Oscar knows his job is to handle the warm-up content and provide the solid but not exciting answers, and then sit back and play a supporting role to Lando giving the people The Content and color and just riding that edge of tricky opinions. and when Lando was doing interviews with Carlos and Daniel, it was shared between the two of them to keep teeing up and following through etc. those interviews were always hilarious and meme worthy, but you didn't get much in the way of actual personality out of either of them. whereas with Oscar there watching and reacting and active listening, Lando is deciding more on the spot where he wants to go with his answers and does he want to give the standard hilarious answer or does he want to add some thoughtfulness to it?
and you can see when he starts to kind of fidget under the topic and looks to Oscar more and more and then in a very decisive voice, Oscar cuts in over the host and says "if it's not anything else it's entertaining" and skillfully draws a close to the entire segment of the interview. then Lando's grateful little "wise words" <3<3
