Cave fish time!!
Cryptotora thamicola or the waterfall climbing cave fish are extremely rare, found in only eight caves on the border of Thailand and Myanmar. Like most cave fish they are blind and pigmentless but what makes them special is there ability to cling to walls and climb up flowing water.

something made to be read can be written with entirely different pacing, word choice, and punctuation than an otherwise identical piece created with the intent of being spoken
i was trying to figure out why the videos where people just read things at you bothered me so much and it's that what's being read out feels poorly written, except it's not. it's just not meant to be consumed first and foremost as a spoken thing
audiobook narrators sound That Way because it bridges the gap. they know how to transform words meant to be read with your eyes into a story you can hear. it's such an impressive skill that takes time to hone, I'd imagine, which is why they are called narrators and paid for their work. not everyone can do it

Hi Mr Gaiman!
What’s your opinion on people saying someone is only a real fan of something if they consumed all of the available media of that thing? (e.g. “you aren’t a real fan of sandman if you only watched the netflix series”)
I feel like more and more people do this to sort of gate keep otherwise amazing fandoms and personally i think it’s quite sad to see.
As I posted on a more or less dead site a couple of years ago:

a wonderful friend of mine refers to opening Find My (Apple's life360) as "checking in on my pokémon"
Headcanon where after so many arguments between the batkids and Bruce over his paranoia and complete disregard for his kids privacy, the entire family had compromised with (in the healthiest way possible) downloading life360 on their phones and that's how they all keep track of each other.
Now Bruce knew that this is mostly for his benefit and is supposed to be a healthy alternative for his unhealthy paranoia and helicopter parenting, but what he wasn't expecting was for his kids to start keeping track of him.
He's putting gas in his car and Dick calls him because apparently Dick has been watching him drive around on the app? And Bruce is currently at a gas station thats right around the corner from a Taco Bell and now Dick wants him to get food for everyone since he's already there.
He's driving home from a meeting and Steph calls him because her and Duke were shopping in the area and wants to know if he can pick them up, when he asks how she knew he was on the same street, he gets a "Oh I just like to stalk everyone on the app for funsies." as an answer.
Jason calls him and he can barely get out a hello before Jason cuts him off, "Bruce why the fuck is your phone battery on 5%, charge your damn phone" which completely stuns him because why does he know that. He clears his throat before answering. "Jason, what?"
"Everyone can see each others phone batteries on '360, now charge your phone." Is all he gets before Jason hangs up on him.

as much as I dislike the Aged Up Jon thing that Bendis did, I adore Jay Nakamura and his relationship with Jon
it's a good example of modern queer rep: neither of them skirt around being queer, Jay's mom and his backstory are an instrumental part of the Son of Kal El plot, their attraction to each other makes sense, and Jay has real flaws!
when Jay was first introduced, the comics make you believe that he's working for Luthor or hiding something (fuckin bullshit Batman line that Jon can't trust him is still such an attention grab though) and the subversion that he is trustworthy and Jon can rely on another person is so wonderful
the lessons that the new generation of heroes gives: you should rely on others, ask for help, and that good things are allowed to happen- there isn't always a negative outcome to everything. these are markedly different from previous iterations of characters because the morals are coming from multiple runs concurrently and are not then immediately retconned to drive up sales.

Some JayJon for you all 😌 enjoy!

was talking about the way the supersons are one of the most fanonized relationships in comics in the tags of that one post and now i'm thinking about the weird fanon thing that's super minor but annoys me the most: there is a certain group of people who seem to believe that damian would,,, dislike jay? why????
cannot emphasize enough how the text of the comics tells us the exact opposite. like, okay:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
( son of kal el issue 1, son of kal el issue 11, son of kal el issue 6 ) Damian's literally infodumping about jay and his work to anyone who will listen. And for the record- Dick decides to invest in The Truth after Damian finds out Jay's identity under the mask, so like.
Also, they get along fine out of uniform, too:

(DC pride 2022) (honestly if anything their dynamic kind of reminds me of steph and damian which leads me to conclude steph and jay would be best friends)
I think if you're going to write stuff with damian and jon you kind of have to acknowledge that jay is someone who is important to both of them. Like, Jay is part of their shared circle. Damian outright admires Jay's professional work. I'm much more interested in that reality.
The only universe where they don't get along is the Injustice universe, but that's the injustice universe where everyone sucks forever.

reading older detective comics starts out "aw man I wish this writer worked on [insert modern series here]" and "art styles in comics have evolved so much" to "really? that's how we're treating our female characters? dear god" and "Cynthia Reynolds? she's so sweet why don't I know her from- ohh yeah nevermind"

we shouldn't agree with erik or charles at the start. they are both pushed to extremes in their ideologies: charles looks for "cures" and only shows off "pretty" mutants, while erik believes in Homo superior and that humans are inherently evil
it is only after fighting with one another that they realize the problems with their own ideologies. charles stops looking to cure all mutants, erik realizes that humans are not a monolith. every time they compromise, their ideologies become closer and closer
eventually, as old men, they finally agree. they create genosha, a haven for mutants, but reach out to other countries and push for progress
both of them are cautionary tales: a world without compromise, without exceptions, is not realistic or kind. only time can teach this, which is why they reconcile late in their lives- the path to a safer, kinder future always lies somewhere in between extremes

similarly, Constantine keeps getting rebooted into a younger version of himself, when he was originally aging in real time with the comics. by now he should be an old man!
when someone powerful dies there is a resulting power vacuum with skirmishes to replace them, which is infinitely more interesting than "they're young again!" or "don't think about their age!" just let people get older ok it doesn't make them less interesting, it just continues to flesh out their character
people will love a new reincarnation just as much if you write them well! it's just a challenge, not an impossibility

they're finally letting Clark age and for Jon to replace him, and Bruce is starting to act more like the middle aged dad he is, with Damian being his obvious successor. of course there are always going to be Classic Young Guys Bruce And Clark comics for Money Purposes, but the main timeline seems to finally be accepting that Bruce and Clark are in their 40/50s
full kudos to the writers for letting Wally, Starfire, Raven, Donna, and Victor age in the new Titans series. I hope they continue to have characters age up- they've made a lot of improvements in the last few years
stop making characters with important historical backstories immortal or completely changing their backgrounds so they're "young"
charles and erik keep their original birthdates but continue to fight, argue, and age as the years go on eventually figuring out who they are and that they love each other in the early 2010s they foster children (there are so many mutants who have estranged parents)
being disturbingly powerful, they live into their early 100s, and one dies first with the other following a few years later. their children, of all various ages, must deal with the power vacuum and legacies of their foster parents. plus all the issues that come with living in the 2020s/2030s- climate crisis, current wars, rise of authoritarianism, etc.
see how easy it was to keep their backstories and let them age? see how there are new problems that naturally arise? Marvel could never

writing tip: convince yourself to write out the basic idea in a bluesky post so you get annoyed at the character limit and keep writing then BAM rough draft complete
