On one hand I understand not teaching cursive in school anymore, because it actually is slower than regular handwriting and almost everything is typed on a keyboard now anyways.
On the other hand, so much of our (even recent!) history was written in cursive, and having a whole generation of kids who can't read letters written by their grandparents, momentos saved by their great-grandparents, or even photo albums from theur immediate family seems like a dangerously quick way to detach us from previous generations.
And on the third, related but slightly malformed hand, I feel bad that yet another form of small, everyday art that brings joy in the middle of mundane tasks, which celebrates personality and individual style and self-expression, is about to fade into obscurity because it wasn't efficient enough for today's world to put up with.
Like... if we continue to whittle away the small arts out of every day life, what's going to be left except stark, ruthless pragmatism?
Maybe writing a grocery list is less mundane when you get to feel elegant for a moment. Maybe you're a little more proud of what you write when you see it flow together like a painting

This week, I read a fic that was around 20 years old, which had originally been posted on the author's personal website and which she added to AO3 a few years ago. She listed her email address with the fic, so after I finished reading, I sent her an email saying how much I enjoyed the story, how much I appreciated the work and effort she obviously put into it, and thanked her for uploading it to AO3. She responded the next day and thanked me for my message, then said she had a few more stories in the same series that she hadn't gotten around to uploading. I checked this morning--she added a 35,000 word novella and thanked me in the summary.
👏 comment 👏 on 👏 old 👏 fics 👏

Sy & Mystic #5
Mystic | Sy
Tumblr media
It was a lazy afternoon - for Mystic, at least. The sun illuminated the office in a warm light which made the few glass ornaments sparkle like stars. Mystic loved this time of day, even though she wished there was something going on, something she could do. In summary, she was bored to the bones, had entered the office with a dramatic sigh and complains on her tongue before. And Sy? They hadn't even bat an eye, listened to every small detail, hummed and mumbled little questions to get an understanding of the situation - all while continuing to read through some papers. And now, they were writing in silence. How were they doing it, doing this, alone and without a sound?
Mystic rolled onto her side on the sofa to look at them - just in time to witness how they accidentally pinched their hand with a pen and sighed right after.
"Don't hurt yourself," she muttered, automatically. "That's my job."
There was a beat of silence in which Mystic thought Sy hadn't even heard her - would that have been better? -, but she knew they had. They often did, despite their arguments that their cochlear implant wasn't that good in helping them with that.
Sy had to blink a few times before responding in a slightly confused voice: "Please don't..?"
Mystic could only snort at that. Then, the silence was draped over them yet again, and the warm orange light dimmed slowly, forcing the office lose its sparkles - and leaving her with an uneasy shiver.

Rings//Roles
The ring you gave me was too big.
The ring I gave you belonged to another man.
The role you gave me, I couldn't fill.
The role I gave you, belonged to someone else.

You Can't Trust The Media
Tumblr media
No, this terrible rendition of Lilo & Stitch is not a success (yet). While $341.7 Million dollars seems like a lot, what if I were to tell you the movie cost $200 million just to make and advertise? That means that the movie has only actually made Disney a measly $141 Million dollars. And since Disney is a massive company, those earnings are barely profits.
The press is trying to play on people's FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) with dark money from Disney. These articles are PR in the guise of news. It is actual propaganda.
To put it in context, the original Lilo & Stitch from 2002 cost $80 Million to make, and the movie earned $270Million in the global box office. This was considered a financial underperformer and "modest" return. That's over three times the budget for the film.
Of course we are unsure of the money spent on marketing as studios typically do not share that information, but we are aware that even the original film had an inflated marketing budget compared to other movies coming out at the same time as well. But a marketing campaign being the same price as the film itself is pretty unheard of and partly why Disney is boasting about the amount of money they are spending on this film.
But the fact that advertising costs are typically hidden should also raise some eyebrows. Why would Disney give a firm number for their advertising budget? It's reasonable to take that 1 Million as a rough estimate. It probably is a higher number.
I also want to mention it seems odd how quickly we are getting Global boxoffice numbers. It feels like they may be trying to beat the bad press coming out.
But at the end, this still isn't a runaway success. Even by Disney's own reported numbers, this isn't that impressive. But the media will try and tell you it is.
This is how propaganda works.
