Someone please tell me I'm too addicted to HTTYD, because even though I tell it to myself it's not enough to get me to back down.
Tell me why all day today I was crafting HTTYD theories and the like. Literally spent hours on Youtube watching videos. Specifically Craig Ferguson's late night talk show.
It was even like falling into old habits too, because I addictively watched his interviews with Alfred Molina. Youtube channel @The Jayleno Fly btw
What I came to find to out today however, is that he interviewed practically the entire HTTYD cast.
He had Gerard Butler on 5 times, Jay Baruchel 2 times, America Ferrera 1, Jonah Hill 1, TJ Miller 1, David Tennant 1, Kit Harrington 1. If you'd also like to know, he had Alfred Molina 16 times.
Then I came to shift, now it's interview videos with the cast. Gerard and Craig for HTTYD 2, America and Jay for The Hidden World. Then I watched the trailers.
Now I am prepared for youtube to recommend me more interviews, let's go with Dean and Chris, see if I can find one with TJ or Jonah.
And hopefully, also be able to find where they actually mention the shows. Because the odd thing I had found is that they can't go into specific detail. Jay does say Riders of Berk on Craig's show. So far found a single video where there's a brief mention of RTTE, but it's still just 'a show'. The literal name wasn't mentioned. You only know it's Race to the Edge because it was at The Hidden World's release, and the interviewer says it got to six seasons.
I want more though.

🎀give yourself a compliment about your own writing
i have really neat ideas for story concepts. i'll imagine something completely absurd and just roll with it and, hey, would you look at that, i did that babey helllll yeahhhhhh
🎈describe your style as a writer; is it fixed? does it change?
i'm pretty versatile in what i do tbh. i select a writing style based on what suits the tone of the story.
🎙️which one of your fics would you like someone to make a pod-fic of?
i've never thought about it before..... honestly tho if alfred molina somehow magically had the inclination to make an audiobook version of Switching like a Lever i think i'd lose my mind a little.
💌share something with us about an up-and-coming work (WIP) that has you excited!
so basically there will soon exist a fic between Ingrid of Berk and Viggo Grimborn Lives AU called Ingrid Grimborn... idk how much y'all know about the VLAU chronology and the lore of these fics but uhhhh yeah no they take place in the same universe.

HARLOW MANNON IS LOOKING FOR HER EX-BOYFRIEND/CHILDHOOD SWEETHEART
Wanted Connection: Ex-boyfriend and childhood sweetheart
Which character is it for?: Harlow Mannon (Florence Pugh)
Do you have any suggested FCs?: I'm very very opened, but here are a few I just thought of off the top right now! Jacob Elordi, Joe Keery, Bill Skarsgard, Sebastian Stan, Alfred Enoch, Berk Cankat, Tom Holland.
Any extra details you want to add in?: I would say that this is someone that Harlow grew up with, someone she definitely would escape with from her crazy house growing up. They could've been next door neighbors or lived in the same kind of neighborhood and she escaped a lot to go and hook up with him. They were high school sweethearts causing chaos together, he knows her inside and out. Once she graduated high school though, there was no compromise for Harlow - she wanted to leave Fairford and travel everywhere she could. They broke up and this could be a sour note between them and now that she's back, there's that tension, but seeing each other definitely can reignite some new flames.
Would you like to be contacted and discuss this connection beforehand?: Not mandatory!
Anything else?: Nope!

I remember I brought this up to a friend a while ago, and I’ve started thinking about it again, after having watched Berk Cast’s video where it was a debate of Viggo vs. Grimmel.
I brought forward the notion, of what if Viggo had been made a movie villain instead of being in RTTE?
I couldn’t really think of it being a strong idea, because if he were in a movie instead of in the show, then he may not have made such an impact as he did in RTTE. I want to safely bet that we’d at least have somewhat of an interesting dynamic between Alfred Molina and Jay Baruchel again, just in a movie sense. But ultimately the friend and I agreed that Viggo was better placed in the show because even though the villain wasn’t given much of a backstory, he left enough of an impact and was well fleshed out.
However, the podcast episode got me to imagine how Viggo would’ve been like had it been for movie instead of show.
So Viggo made villain for movie 2, and then they could’ve used Drago for 3. I mean obviously you have to take Dagur out of the equation since he was part of the shows but sadly wasn’t included in the movies, so introduce the Hunters in a different matter. Maybe five years have passed, Hiccup has explored enough of the Archipelago and just short of the borders dozens of times, so he convinces the Riders to go out farther. They decide to take a short trip where they wouldn’t be returning to Berk, instead finding other islands in which to spend the night.
Hiccup neglecting to tell his friends he needed a breather since his father had said he was soon to become instigated as chief. But after a day, they see three large ships docked at an island, and an area had trees lit aflame. The crest on the ships being unfamiliar, and in a flyover over the island they see dragons in panic and men with weapons hunting dragons. Not killing, instead incapacitating them and getting them into cages. The Riders set to freeing the dragons, though nearly being shot down from the sky themselves.
Ryker, who had been leading that hunt which the Riders disrupted, would return to Hunter Isle, and inform Viggo that they were unsuccessful because a boy flying a Night Fury led a team of riders that freed the dragons. Viggo becomes intrigued, knowing that the Night Furies were practically extinct. So it was a shock to find one still lived, and even moreso that a young man had tamed it and flew seamlessly on its back. He tells Ryker to find the group of Riders, if not able to defeat them to at least start assessing the Riders as their enemies.
With the Riders coming to engage the Dragon Hunters more, of course the gang starts getting on edge. Hardly anyone knows where they were, meaning if this is a threat they can’t take down, their deaths will go unheard. Then they come to notice that they’re being pursued. Someone, I would think Snotlout, says they should stop engaging and head back to Berk. Hiccup knows that if they do, he becomes chief all the more sooner. Not ready to tell his friends of what was to happen. But then he also knows the danger they’ve gotten themselves into from catching the Hunters’ attention. If the Hunters actually make a goal to take them down, fleeing won’t make a difference. They may just come to bring the problem to Berk.
And then of course, winding in a moment where Viggo would meet with Hiccup personally. I mean in RTTE Viggo did make the confrontation by placing himself in a cage, lured Hiccup there, and even had the courtesy to give him the headstart before inflicting the Flightmare mist on him and Toothless.
I can think that there’s room enough where we see the Hunters beginning to learn of the Riders’ tactics. Enough for Viggo to come up with a new weapon and inflict it upon them. Something that does indeed strike one of them down.
Tambien, there’s the question of whether or not to involve the Dragon Eye. Have Hiccup find it in a movie format. Will repeat once again, RTTE had 6 seasons. Sufficient time to have the Riders discover new species as well as fighting others for possession of it. Movie, well this is an hour and a half to two-hour time frame. Significantly less space. I’d want to play with this: the Riders in coming to be pursued, find the graveyard of ships. Someone else has to encounter the first booby trap. It piques Hiccup’s interest as to why the ship would be so heavily guarded. Or! As the Riders cross the archipelago’s borders, but before first countering the Dragon Hunters, they find the graveyard. Hiccup does same and retrieves Dragon Eye. And it’s when the Hunters start seeking them out that a Hunter spots the Dragon Eye in their possession. Hence Viggo does come to give orders to hunt down the Riders to take the device.
Maybe there could even be a final stand just like RTTE Season 4 finale.
I’d also want to toss in similar events to HTTYD 2. Where Stoick realizes the Riders have been gone too long and he and Gobber go looking for them. Who knows at one point they’d encounter the circumstance the young group of Vikings had gotten themselves caught up in.
And tbh, it might’ve been more notable on Molina’s part if he’d been in a movie. I would assuredly like to bet that his character and Jay’s would still have an interesting dynamic because of them having worked together previously in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. One thing that was well presented throughout the course of RTTE was that Jay and Molina indeed do bounce well off each other.
But well we got what we got. I’m real satisfied with what we were given, I consider Viggo the best villain of the franchise.
And if anyone else has any ideas they’d like to toss in, I would be more than excited to hear it

I'm trying to research ships for RTTE/HTTYD and it's starting to piss me off.
Drago's ships, his visuals & his army were designed with the idea that he comes from another part of the world, most specifically an unspecified asian or slavic culture though they also state that there were north african and mediterranean influences (I'm getting this from the art book btw)
first of all, Drago is said to have come from another part of the world, possibly somewhere in the southern hemisphere (although they kind of jump back and forth with the southern hemisphere / asian / mediterranean idea), so why were there basically no exotic dragons with him?
secondly, his original design was so clearly recycled to create Ryker and possibly Krogan:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as were his ships:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
thirdly, PLEASE BE MORE SPECIFIC THAN 'Slavic and Asiatic influences' WHAT KIND OF BOAT IS THAT?????
They seem to be a type of Catamaran, which was (this is all from wiki btw) invented by the Austronesian peoples (after some basic research it seems this group originates in the pacific & indian ocean but I may be wrong) so it supports Drago coming from the southern hemisphere, and also the Asiatic influences in his visuals.
After a shit ton of research all I can come up with is that they are a fantasy adaptation of Māori waka (canoes, which seem to be the ones seen in Moana), a Drua (Fijian), or a Kalia (Tonga) or any traditional boat/ship/canoe that falls under the multihull design...
BUT THEN WHY DO THE DRAGON HUNTERS HAVE THESE SHIPS
I'm pretty sure the Dragon Hunter's were supposed to be off in the North, either on other islands in the archipelago or nearer a country like Norway or Iceland. I'm not sure if they were expanding their business empire or if they were searching specifically for the dragon eye? I'm convinced they said it in the show but all I found so far was this reference:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
those quotes kind of imply that the reason the riders didn't see any hunters until s2 was because they were away in the North, looking for the dragon eye, and that they did find The Reaper and the missing Dragon Eye. At some point I'll rewatch and check but for now just correct me!
anyway, this implies that they should have more traditional viking ships? of which there are a few to chose from (again, very basic research going on here, please correct me):
The Snekkar was designed for speed and for transporting troops to invade/fight on land. The Dreki is very similar to the Snekkar, execpt with more stability. They were prefered for traversing rivers. The Byrding was used for deep-sea travel (crossing the ocean between Norway and Iceland). Knarr's were cargo ships and were essential to exploration. These are essentially what Berk uses already, (Longships).
The Dragon Hunters need much bigger ships.
Berkians are seen using longships to:
travel between islands,
trade,
fish
and invade (they seem to have bows, crossbows, bolas. Their biggest transportable weapon are catapults, but only sometimes and they seem to manage fine with the longships).
The Dragon Hunters are using their ships for:
extensive travel in rough waters/storms(living quaters are necessary),
transporting large animals (mostly Dragons) which requires large cages made from heavy material (tho possibly gronckle iron which is lightweight, but it looks different so probably a heavier metal),
and hunting (they have catapults, grappling chains, and ballistae which are all large weapons which need a decent amount of space to operate)
these requirements translate into a need for larger ships with bigger storage, capacity and hull space. Traditional viking ships seem to have transported around 20 - 40 men per boat but they had very little freeboard (meaning the water was very close to the deck) and no cabins for the crew to sleep, so they'd have to be at sea for only a few weeks.
what I'm saying is that a European style ship would make for a more distinct style here. Viggo is voiced by Alfred Molina who is english, and definately sounds it. Ryker is voiced by JB Blanc who is French-British. If their Dragon Hunter's were European themed it wouldn't exactly be out of place, especially when it's known that vikings invaded Britain as early as the 9th century.
This got off track but basically, if rtte had a bigger budget and a more diverse style/design then having european style ships would better distinguish the Dragon Hunters from Drago's army, so long as they were adapted to fit the style of httyd (making the worldbuilding more fun!).
If we're being time period accurate then your main options are going to be a Cog and a Hulk. Both are mentioned some time around the 10th century but neither are particularly impressive looking, especially compared to the Oseberg.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HOWEVER
since Drago's ships were blown way out of proportion compared to their real life inspiration, I vote that ships from later eras should also be allowed since they were essentially in the same family as the cog and the hulk in appearance if nothing else. So your typical frigate, brig, schooner, and sloop should all be viable especially considering the size of Drago's flagship.
For refence on crew sizes:
your typical viking ship will have 20 - 40 crewmen, larger longships could carry around 70 - 80 crewmen.
your typical cog would have 5 - 6 crewmen
your typical schooner would have 16 crewmen, your typical brig would have 22 crewmen, your typical frigate would have 300 crewmen
some fun ships i found while searching
Oseberg, had enough room for 30 rowers, one of the better preserved findings from the viking era, my dad went to visit it and says it's awesome
USS Constellation, 1854, sloop of war, had about 286 crewmen
Mary Rose, 1511, carrack-type warship, had about 415 crewmen
Queen Anne's Revenge, Blackbeard's ship, 1710, frigate, had about 300 crewmen, about 30 - 40 guns (15 - 20 guns on each side)
Vasa, so fucking big it sailed like half a mile then tipped over and sank

Retrospective Review: Son of Batman
Son of Batman was the first solo Batman movie in the DC Animated Movie Universe. The quality of movies in the DC animated movie universe was a little inconsistent. I wasn't a big fan of either of the first few Justice League movies. When I first watched Son of Batman, I wasn't a big fan of it either, especially coming off movies like The Flashpoint Paradox, Under the Red Hood, The Dark Knight Returns, Year One etc... all of which had released in the few years prior to this one. Upon rewatch, I definitely feel I liked the movie considerably more. Its still not top tier in the Batman pantheon, but its in the 2nd tier.
I think what works in the favor of this movie is the pacing and the simplicity of its plot. The film is a very, very loose adaptation of Batman and Son. It doesn't really share much in terms of story of those comics, but just the idea of Bruce meeting Damian, and him being the son of him and Talia and some involvement of Kirk Langstrom. Apart from that its an original story which involved Deathstroke killing Ra's and later kidnapping Talia and using Langstrom to create an army of Man Bats, while Bruce meets Damian and tries to temper his aggressive and killer instincts. There is some amusement to be had with Bruce and Alfred getting used to Damian. Dick also makes an amusing supporting appearance and his interactions with Damian are a highlight. The film manages to integrate just the right amount of humor and enough action to keep the film engaging. There is nothing overly complicated and deep about it, but it is somewhat interesting to see Batman being the less aggressive and dark character while spending time with Damian.
There are still aspects of the film that annoy me a little. Chief among them is the portrayal of Deathstroke. A character that is one of the deadliest hand to hand combatants in DC comics gets his ass handed to him both by Batman and Damian. He has a pretty short fight with Batman in which Batman dominates him, and then a fairly badly injured Damian beats him as well. Talia is reduced to being a damsel in distress that Batman and Damian have to save. Damian in general is overpowered in these series of movies and it sometimes gets to the point of ridiculousness. In this film, he gets the climactic fight instead of Batman. In fairness, the film is called 'Son' of Batman, so he is the titular character but it just doesn't feel right for someone like Deathstroke to be defeated by Damian. I also don't feel the decision that Damian took to follow his father's ways was particularly earned. I don't think they did enough to show that Damian was starting to respect Bruce's teachings.
The film's voice cast is strong. Jason O'Mara has the right type of voice for Batman and he's solid. Stuart Allan makes for a good Damian Wayne. David McCallum displays some dry wit as Alfred, and Sean Maher seems to be having fun as Nightwing. Thomas Gibson as Deathsroke, Morena Baccarin as Talia, and Xander Berkely as Langstrom are all solid in their roles. Ethan Spaulding does a solid enough job directing the movie. Its definitely one of the Batman movies that has improved upon rewatch, mainly because I didn't carry the weight of expectations. Its around a 6.5/10.
