O Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkien

É meio complicado falar sobre um livro que conheço tanto a partir do seu derivado e que só conheci a fonte original agora. Mas a gente tenta.

1. O enredo

A história é sobre um hobbit, o Bilbo, que é convocado pelo Gandalf para participar numa aventura bem arriscada junto a um grupo de anãos/anões para recuperar o ouro ancestral dos ancestrais deles roubado pelo dragão Smaug. A jornada é longa, cheia de desafios que incluem fome, aranhas, gobelins, elfos e muitas outras coisas.

A história flui muito bem entre cada plot, cada evento, com Bilbo participando mais a partir da separação com Gandalf e com isso, ganhando um pouco mais do respeito dos anãos.

Temos encontros com personagens que ganharão maior destaque em outra oportunidade, como Elrond e Gollum. Inclusive, a parte com Gollum foi uma das mais divertidas do livro.

Mas, resumindo, a história é muito bem estruturada, nós percorremos a Terra Média com a companhia e, especialmente nos perrengues, é uma delícia.

2. Os personagens

Os personagens têm poucas oportunidades ou momentos de diálogos quando comparamos com o restante da história, o que resulta em uma visão mais geral sobre eles do que algo mais intimista. Os conhecemos brevemente. Afinal, a história é sobre a aventura do hobbit, “lá e de volta outra vez” e não “dramas entre hobbits, anãos e dilemas pessoais com o resto da Terra Média”. Mas ainda senti falta deles exatamente por causa do pouco que temos dos diálogos que saíram da boca deles – isso tudo deixou um gostinho de quero mais.

Os anãos: São muito cabeça dura, teimosos, gostam das coisas à sua maneira e precisamos conquistar sua confiança e então seu respeito. Valorizam seu ouro e suas produções e são fortes em várias formas possíveis.

Thorin é bem turrão mas não totalmente irracional. Falo isso pensando no final, quando ele se recusa a abandonar a montanha por estar cercado por um exército armado. Talvez ele mantivesse a mesma postura caso eles estivessem desarmados? Muito talvez, quase com certeza. Mas como não estavam, não tiro a razão dele.

Os outros aparecem tão pouco mas são bem carismáticos e divertidos de serem conhecidos da mesma forma.

O hobbit: Nosso Bilbo é composto por partes iguais de vontade de voltar pra casa e fome. Ele faz o que acha certo e discute com qualquer um, não importa que é a metade do tamanho (ele é a metade ou mais do tamanho de qualquer um) dos demais.

Ele tem uma participação bem balanceada ao longo da história. No começo segue como membro da expedição, depois se torna a principal arma do grupo e no fim, resolve as coisas da sua própria forma e depois fica mais nos bastidores.

Gostaria que ele tivesse uma participação maior, um envolvimento maior com os anãos enquanto pessoas, amigos e um pouco menos como um “contratado para prestação de serviços de gatuno”.

Gandalf: Apareceu pouco, conquistou todo mundo e deixou gostinho de quero mais. Ele é um mago que vê e entende coisas além do que está imediatamente na sua frente e não intervém além do necessário. Gosto que ele deixa que cada um siga sua história e seu rumo sem impor sua presença e sua magia sobre eles.

Gandalf é bem daora.

Também é respondão e lida bem com os anãos.

Elfos, humanos, gobelins e galerinhas por aí: Eles foram surpreendentemente tranquilos, mesmo quando geraram problemas, o que pode ser estranho, mas quem leu consegue entender (mesmo discordando). Eles poderiam ter sido MUITO piores nas tramoias mas fizeram bem seu papel, seja nos seus momentos individuais quanto nos preparativos para a batalha dos Cinco Exércitos.

E é isso mesmo.

Cada um foi bem de acordo com o que se esperaria deles, acho que é essa a sensação. Nem mais, nem menos. Foram o que poderíamos esperar.

3. A escrita

Acredito ser a peça mais especial da história.

O livro foi escrito como uma história de ninar para seus filhos e sentimos isso em cada uma das palavras, na forma com que as frases são construídas, no ritmo, nas pausas, na forma com que o narrador interage com o leitor, em vários detalhes espalhados pelo livro.

E isso é algo que torna ele difícil de ser traduzido em outro formato além do físico. Mas isso é debate para outro ponto.

A escrita e o jeito de contar a história que o Tolkien traz tem inocência, delicadeza, aquele medo que pode ser superado, tem lições sobre sermos fortes, tem a saudade de casa, tem a vontade de ficar num sonho bom, tem músicas que traduzem melhor que palavras algumas histórias e momentos, tem brincadeiras, tem relacionamentos simples de serem entendidos, temos motivações claras. Tem muitas coisas e muitas delas estão apenas na maneira, no jeito, nas palavras escolhidas pra contar essa história.

Isso é algo que todo autor possui, mas o charme dessa é que conseguimos sentir sua motivação original ao longo da história, assim como vemos ela crescendo dentro de si mesma em cada novo desafio dos personagens.

4. Livro X Filmes X Minha opinião

Oh boy.

Livro: Algumas cenas levam dias, semanas durante seu desenvolvimento. Os personagens passam fome e outros perrengues. Eles tem um prazo mas desconhecem qual é, então chegar lá já é o suficiente. Filme: Eles correm contra o tempo e os desafios para chegar no destino a tempo do prazo que possuem. Opinião: O filme poderia ter trabalhado melhor a organização do tempo x espaço, mas a urgência deixou mais interessante para se ver num filme. Prazos longos funcionam melhores em seriados (animado ou não)

Livro: Bilbo vai para a aventura por causa do “contrato” e da recompensa no final Filme: Bilbo vai para a aventura pelo contrato e fica por achar que os anões merecem um lar como o que ele tenta retornar Opinião: O Livro ficou bem “impessoal” e “objetivo” e o filme deu uma conexão entre os personagens.

Livro: Bilbo conta sobre o anel Filme: Bilbo esconde o anel Opinião: A versão do Livro faz sentido para a história isolada, a do filme faz sentido quando conhecemos o anel de Senhor dos Aneis.

Livro: Azog é mencionado mas não chega a participar, tanto. Legolas e Tauriel não existem. Filme: Azog é inimigo do Thorin. Legolas e Tauriel ajudam e se envolvem bastante na história. Opinião: Azog deu uma história interessante pro passado do Thorin e apenas isso. Os outros foram descartáveis.

Livro: Thorin, como qualquer anão, é apaixonado pelo seu ouro e suas preciosidades e fica enciumado com qualquer um que se aproxime ou que ameace o que tem. Ele fica um pouco pior, mais adoentado pelo seu ouro Filme: Thorin é vítima de uma “doença” hereditária que corrói sua família por causa/intensificada pela Pedra Arken Opinião: A “doença” diminui um pouco a responsabilidade do Thorin, mas seu comportamento foi bem similar em ambos

Livro: Bilbo fica inconsciente durante parte da batalha final e escondido na outra parte. Filme: Bilbo participa do conflito dentro dos seus próprios limites e ajuda os anões. Opinião: O do Livro é mais verídico com a personalidade “preguiçosa” do hobbit mas a do filme é mais verídico ao mostrar o quanto aquela aventura transformou o Bilbo

Livro: Gandalf aparece no começo, ajuda e some. Aparece de novo, sai pra resolver b.o. dele e volta. Ele deixa a batalha rolar e espera com Bilbo. Leva Bilbo pra casa. Filme: No filme vemos o que poderia ser que ele estava resolvendo quando se afasta do grupo. Ele também se envolve mais na batalha, junto do Bilbo. Opinião: Os dois foram ok, sem muito a reclamar de ambos.

Livro: Temos algumas cenas de diálogos entre Bilbo e Thorin, mas muito poucas. Filme: As mesmas cenas do Livro e mais algumas outras, aumentando a relação deles. Opinião: A dinâmica deles no Livro é muito pequena quando comparada aos filmes, mas é em sua essência a mesma, incluindo as DR que eles tiveram. No filme só foi mais intenso do que no Livro.

Livro: Os anãos são bem recebidos pelos humanos, apesar de um pouco de receio sobre serem quem dizem ser. Filme: Os anãos se escondem para entrar na cidade sem problemas, mas acabam tendo problemas e com alguma chantagem, conseguem apoio para seguirem. Opinião: A versão do Livro torna o comportamento do Thorin (na montanha) ainda mais absurdo e a versão do filme deixa um pouco mais “vingativo mas com motivo”

Livro: Smaug sai da montanha após os anãos se prenderem dentro dela para fugir dos ataques deles e então ele vai para a cidade do lago, onde é morto. Filme: Os anãos e Bilbo usam das estruturas antigas para tentar matar o dragão, mas sem sucesso. Ele eventualmente foge para a cidade do lago, onde é morto. Opinião: Gostei muito mais dos anãos lutando ativamente ao contrário de deixar o dragão fazer o que quer. Mesmo desarmados, eles fizeram muito pouco, presos ao medo (compreensível mas ainda não gostei)

Livro: O Livro é divertido, leve, inocente, fantasioso e cheio de elementos característicos de histórias infantis ou juvenis. Seus personagens são caricatos, suas motivações são bem simples, suas ações e falas são diretas, etc etc. Filme: O filme começa como uma aventura e termina num conflito envolvendo questões políticas, romances, dramas e rivalidades. Além de muitas cenas de ação intensas. Opinião: Propostas diferentes de contar uma mesma história. Funcionam separadas. Mas um não adapta fielmente o outro.

E então?

Livro: Ele é, com excelência, um Livro de fantasia cheio de aventuras para (mas não exclusivamente) crianças de qualquer idade. É uma história sobre como sair da sua zona de conforto pode render momentos únicos, sobre como podemos fazer amigos inesperados. No final, fica a sensação de um caminho bem trilhado. Filme: É uma trilogia de filmes para qualquer idade, sendo fã ou não a obra original. Os filme contam a história de um hobbit que usa o amor que sente pela sua casa como força pra ajudar os que não a tem, a reconquistarem. Mostra uma versão mais humanizada (= com defeitos, ambições, problemas) que a apresentada no Livro (= pura, inocente, sincera) Opinião: Ambos funcionam de formas independentes, mas a comparação não leva em consideração as diferenças entre formatos, épocas, público alvo, criadores e do próprio universo (literário e cinematográfico) em que foi criado. Ps.: O Livro foi feito como uma história individual e singular. O filme foi feito como adaptação de uma história pertencente a um universo já existente e com um público ativo.

O livro traz uma história deliciosa e muito gostosinha de se ler, especialmente a noite (único horário que tive). Adoraria ver uma adaptação o mais fiel possível com a fonte original, mas não acredito que filme ou até seriado seja o melhor formato pra isso. Por isso, acho que uma adaptação boa seria uma animação com artes feitas à mão (como as próprias artes do Tolkien) ou Ghibli. Por causa de: cuidado na transmissão das emoções, da estética, ambientação e leveza que a história tem.

Filmes ou seriados exigem algumas adaptações para condensar histórias e transmitir emoções dentro uma determinada quantidade de tempo e ainda atender exigências de mercado que não se importam com fidelidade, pelo menos na grande maioria das vezes. A história do Hobbit, por ter surgido depois de um sucesso gigantesco como O Senhor dos Anéis, deixa de ser uma história isolada e é vendida como uma prequel, o que não é como ele foi concebido, o que por si só já transforma por completo a maneira com que a história é percebida. Dito isso, acho que algumas das adaptações feitas foram boas, umas foram medianas e outras foram bem desnecessárias. Não listei todas e nem pretendo. Não teve muito do livro que “senti falta” nos filmes além da própria maneira de contar a história, porque a história em si foi bem contada da forma que foi.

O filme trouxe coisas que eu adorei e que deram uma dimensão para os relacionamentos entre o hobbit e os anões que deixou a dinâmica mais interessante (só a participação mais ativa do Bilbo na guerra já traz isso, por exemplo, sem incluir outras cenas ou momentos dos filmes). Uma coisa que me surpreendeu foi encontrar várias e várias cenas idênticas ao livro no filme, com diferenças no tom, na entrega, no ritmo, mas com falas, ações e comportamentos muito parecidos. Como por ex.: os diálogos com Smaug e Gollum, a oferta de paz para Thorin entre os Elfos e os Homens, a oferta de paz do Bilbo, dentre outras. E aqui acrescento um parabéns aos atores do filme que trouxeram detalhes aos personagens que deram um charme gigantesco, especialmente Martin Freeman, que trouxe um Bilbo debochado, com cara de quem preferia estar em casa e que teve que aguentar bafo de dragão todo exibicionista e o Benedict que deu uma vida ao momento mais narcisista do Smaug de forma magistral. São meus momentos preferidos de todos os filmes e, vendo o original, vejo que eles fizeram muita justiça com o material (tanto o livro quanto a adaptação).

5. O livro foi...

Uma experiência que fico muito feliz de ter esperado tanto para ler e de ter aproveitado bem cada parte da leitura.

Tenho uma memória afetiva muito forte com os filmes e isso pode ter afetado a experiência ou minha capacidade de comparar, mas tentei fazer justiça com ambos.

E o livro é um caminho para criar outros tipos de memórias afetivas.

An accurate list of the best movies I've ever seen

Hercules

Hercules is probably my favourite Disney movie. And I also think that's where my interest in Greek mythology started. Hades is my favorite villain from this company and he's such a mood.

The Prince of Egypt

Oh dear you don't know how much I love this movie. I know every song by heart and was lucky enough to sing them with my choir. I'm a big fan of animation and despite how old is this movie, I think it remains one of the best ever produced. I cried more times over this movie than over all the others on this list combined.

Friends & Family

I only discovered this film this year but it quickly became one of my favorites. I have never laughed for so many consecutive minutes at a movie. I approached it because it's unusual to see a gay mob-themed movie, but I immediately fell in love with all the characters and the final scene remains one of the most comic I have ever seen.

Treasure Planet

I have a soft spot for animated films about great adventures and self-discovery. Jim has been my only animated crush for years, and his story has always resonated with something inside of me (maybe the desire for adventure and his recklessness, idk). Plus, of course, "'I'm Still Here" is one of the most beautiful soundtracks ever created.

Howl's Moving Castle

One of the first films I saw by Studio Ghibli and my absolute favourite. The love stories created by this Studio are always wonderful, and this one is no different. Plus I always saw myself in Sophie (especially about the crush on Howl) and, well, there's Calcifer, what more do you want?

Les Choristes

Another thing I love: movies about music. It may be that I've been playing an instrument for years and singing in choirs, but I've always cried watching kids rediscover a new side of themselves through music and songs. And these songs are composition's masterpieces. I still remember them all by heart even though French isn't my native language.

A Christmas Carol

I'm slightly obsessed with this story, with Charles Dickens and with Christmas. I was born on Christmas Eve so you can imagine how close this theme is to my heart. I have seen several versions of this story though, and for some reason, this one remains my favourite. It may be that it's different from other more colourful versions and really shows the darkness behind the original story, idk.

How to Train Your Dragon

I literally grew up with this saga: I was 8 years old at the first film, 12 at the second and 17 at the third. I watched Hiccup grow up with me as a friend and Toothless as a fellow adventurer. I'll forever be grateful to Dreamworks for creating the best-animated saga that cinema has ever seen.

The Three Musketeers

This movie is so random that it's perfect. I watched it again recently (after like 8 years) and realized that maybe my daddy issues come from this movie: Luke Evans, Orlando Bloom and the freaking Mads Mikkelsen together, seriously? I'm not surprised it was one of my favourite movies growing up.

A Monster in Paris

The love I have for this film is enormous. I could never get over the beauty of the songs in it. The characters are so well written and Francœur will always be in my top animated characters. It's too amazing to be real.

Rise of the Guardians

I could talk for hours about this film and have not even touched the tip of the iceberg. I have an insane obsession with all the characters, starting with and especially Jack, my top animated crush for years. It's all so perfect that I don't see how people never nominate it when it comes to top animated movies.

The Hobbit

Again, I have serious problems with films about fantasy adventures. I have always preferred The Hobbit saga to its sequel because the story has always fascinated me more. And the main character especially: for me Bilbo >>>> Frodo. And then there's Thorin and Luke Evans. You know, daddy issues.

Mune: Guardian of the Moon

Another French animated movie, another obsession, another adventure, another animated character in my top. This is an example of how to do good animation. There isn't a colour out of place. The settings are authentic, the characters are original, and the adventure they make gets me every time.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

I'm maybe a Muggle, but I prefer Fantastic Beasts to the Harry Potter saga. That's not to say it's better, mind you, but it reflects me more. We all know how we Hufflepuffs (and Ravenclaws) have no real representation in the HP movies, so to be able to have at least one prequel saga starring a Hufflepuff (in which I also find myself far too much) as the protagonist is wonderful. And I have an unhealthy urge to become a magizoologist.

The Greatest Showman

It's the movie I have watched the most of these. I know every song by heart and every line too. It always manages to be a roller coaster of emotions. And it has Hugh Jackman in it.

The Boy Foretold By The Stars

I'm a big supporter of the Philippine's film company. This is one movie is gentle, funny, and not based on the usual drama between Christianity and LGBT+ people (which is what I thought when reading the plot at first). Moreover, another underrated thing, the Philippines' music company here has thrown in masterpiece after masterpiece of songs, perfect for this movie.

Bros

This is my top comfort film in the last year. It's like watching a Hallmark movie but hotter, much more sincere and gay. Very gay. And the relationship between the two main characters is so cute and sweet. And funny.

Top Gun: Maverick

I love this saga but especially love this particular chapter. I love Maverick and his relationship with Rooster, and all the other characters are so well-written. And don't get me started on the story... I LOVE it. There isn't much else to say except that Cruise is a great actor (and a terrible person).

Glass Onion - Knives Out

I love my silly little gay detective. And I have a little passion for movies and mystery series. I found this saga's chapter more compelling than the first one, and the characters gripped me more. Also I fell in love with the setting. Oh and then there are Daniel Craig and Hugh Grant.

Summary: There are many trials for a hobbit attempting to make a life among dwarves. A hobbit wants a garden. A hobbit wants to eat regular meals. A hobbit wants friends, good books, and comfortable chairs. Bilbo does his best to carve out a little hobbit life for himself in the mountain. If only there were not one final obstacle. For a hobbit heart wants love, and among dwarves that is a sticky subject.

Eskel rests a big hand on Lambert’s shoulder. “It’s alright, Lambert,” he says soothingly. “I told Jaskier about Geralt’s feelings for Yennefer weeks ago, it’s about time he got all the information about the current situation.”

“Geralt’s feelings. For Yennefer,” Lambert says flatly. He throws his hands in the air. “Fuck, sure, fine. Geralt’s in love with Yennefer, and now Jaskier knows and is going to help them get back together.”

When a monster becomes a beloved mutt (Bilbo/Thorin, written as a gift fic for th eamazing @shipper47)

Summary:

Bilbo finds a stray warg pup and of course he falls in love with it, much to Thorin's dismay.

Thorin hates the little monste,r but he loves his husband, even if he doesnt understand why he wants to keep it for a pet. A word that has no Kuzdhul equvelent.

The things he does for his hobbit, his husband, his consort *sigh*
