In 1990, DC Comics released an experimental graphic novel in that it used 3-D technology. Batman 3-D (it has been listed as both 3D and 3-D, cover date December, 1990) featured a new story by John Byrne, a rare 3-D tale (from Batman 3-D 1#, 1953) and a pin-up gallery. (SPOILERS obviously):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An obvious one, but a classic, the "up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman!" line reference. This one never gets old.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jimmy next name drops Flamebird. in the comics Nightwing and Flamebird were Kryptonian superheroes adopting their names from a species of Kryptonian birds. This is where Dick Grayson gets his Nightwing identity from. The page here is from Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe #17 (1986) drawn by Curt Swan and Karl Kesel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the climatic battle of part 2 of Adventures of a Normal Man, we see Leslie Willis become blue and look more like her traditional Livewire look. Her first appearance was in Superman the Animated Series, season 2 episode 5 "Livewire" where she was voiced by Lori Petty, a.k.a. Tank Girl. In the show Leslie was a shock jock radio DJ slinging hot takes live on air knocking down Superman a peg or two
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously MAwS took Leslie in a whole different direction, design choice, and occupation change, but I am excited to see what happens next for her.
Tumblr media
Before we see Clark battle Leslie we see this guy. White hair, wears orange and black, its Slade Wilson a.k.a. Deathstroke. This fool here in like 20 to 25 years will have his life spiral out of control and get his ass kicked by a bunch of colorfully dressed teenagers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deathstroke makes his first appearance in New Teen Titans #2 (1980) (W: Marv Wolfman and George Perez, P: George Perez, I: Romeo Tanghal, C: Adrienne Roy, L: Ben Oda) where he is hired by H.I.V.E. to kill the Teen Titans. In the comics he's a major piece of shit, but a damn good assassin.
Tumblr media
After the fight we see Supes clean up and he picks up a billboard that reads Amazotech.
Tumblr media
This is a good reference to Professor Anthony Ivo, a mad scientist of the DC Universe who built the Amazo robot who could adapt and replicate any power that the Justice League has and weaknesses. Both Ivo and the Amazo robot make their first appearances here in Brave and the Bold #30 (1960) with the cover art done by Mike Sekowsky and Murphy Anderson.
Tumblr media
At the end of the episode Slade name drops Task Force X better known as the Suicide Squad. The name "Suicide Squad" is from the Brave and the Bold #25 where it was the name of Rick Flag's unit in the military. The Suicide Squad pop culture knows first debuted in Legends #3 (1987) as seen below (W: John Ostrander and Len Wein, P: John Byrne, I: Karl Kesel, C: Tom Ziuko, L: Steve Haynie).
Tumblr media
The team at this time was composed of Rick Flag, Bronze Tiger, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, Enchantress, and Blockbuster. The team members have changed out with each new Task Force X/Suicide Squad iteration.
Tumblr media
Behind Slade, here is Amanda Waller, the most fearsome woman in the DC universe. She's ruthless, politically powerful, and will not hesitate to blow up anyone in the Suicide Squad if they screw up. She makes her first appearance in Legends #1 (1987) same comic series in the previous picture. Very excited to see where My Adventures with Superman goes with this cuz you don't see Superman interact with Deathstroke or Suicide Squad all the often.

mr. dr. chuck, i'm a few months ago i told a doc of mine that i believe i'm on the spectrum (after yeeeears of considering all the reasons why i thought so) and she agreed with me. then i came to some conclusions about members of my family. then i started melting down and haven't really recovered.
i'm in my 30's, but my life feels like it's been the mistake-addled 24th year for over a decade. people, choices, wants, they feel like things that were silly blips and not of much substance. i'm tired and my body hurts, so it feels harder to get to things i need. doctors don't seem like they can be trusted because of all the other ways i show up in the world.
i'm worried about my life and my future, and it feels like my magic is gone (or that i can't touch it right now). do you have any words of wisdom for someone who found out this really big thing about themselves kind of late?
thank you.
hello buckaroo thank you for writing. first of all i will say MOST IMPORTANT thing to remember is that it is okay and valid to FEEL the way that you feel. your reaction to this news or any news really is not wrong. that does not mean you cant wish for another reaction or WORK TOWARDS another reaction, but in grand cosmic sense this is just your way. YOUR TROT IS VALID and we all have our own unique way. sometimes that path is an easy path with sunny days and smiles and a glorious view, and sometimes it is through the darkness of shadows or crawling through the old bog. we can PREFER one path over the other, but neither is WRONG.
when giving advice old chuck tries to not PROJECT what i think YOU should do because that is not really the point. this is your trot to trot and i do not think it is my place to act like some authority of your way. what chuck can do is tell you MY story of diagnosis and how it made ME feel and maybe you can take little pieces of that for yourself.
chuck learned of way on autism spectrum when i was in early twenties by doctor who said 'yes this is your way'. when i learned of my spectrum way my reaction was: wow this is very very cool i am so lucky because all of my heroes are autistic and now i am in this RADICAL CLUB. we are special and unique and DANG what a treat wish i could have a membership card in my wallet to show all my buds.
now obviously this is not everyones reaction, but as starting off point i wonder what it would have meant to my future if the news would have HIT ME IN A BAD WAY. if i would have felt let a dang robot alien who didnt belong. maybe id be swimmin through the bog ever since.
thing is I LIKE ROBOT ALIENS they are very cool. doctor did not MAKE me different, i was different already, our talks just popped a nice little name on it for me to take or leave. i took the name proudly because DATA from stars trek (certified robot alien) is exactly how i already felt and dang what a cool character and dang what a great life. so was DAVID BYRNE. so was every cool buckaroo artist that i liked. cowboys are OUTSIDER HEROES and that is how my autism makes me feel.
so like i said, i do not know about YOUR way, but MY WAY of hearing this news was heaps of joy and excitement. i will also say that it is very DIFFICULT to find this reaction later if your first leap is feeling in a sad way about it. so maybe if you want to trot back in your mind to those first few steps it would be helpful. maybe mentally trot to where you were pushed off a dang cliff and think "well was i pushed off a cliff or was i just told 'hey bud youve been floating this whole time?"'
because if youve been floating then DANG thats a lot of power. thats not falling. you can float up, you can float down, you can float side to side.
the next thing i will say AS AND ARTIST is that years of toiling and feeling aimless are NEVER actually aimless when it comes to creation. and to LIVE in a human body is to be an artist, because you are CONSTANTLY CREATING the future. when i am writing and i dont have an idea for my next book that can be frustrating, but it is also PART of the process. if i walk to the store to rustle up my mind, or wander around the park, or spend a whole WEEK feeling weird because of writers block THAT IS ALL PART OF MAKING GREAT ART. that is not wasted time. in other words, your years of toiling are not wasted time, that is just the process we all have when we are creating a future masterpiece.

Sexy Puppet Tournament Round 1 DIGIT vs WALLY DARLING
Digit (The Jim Henson Hour)
Technical director, keyboardist, "semi-robotic person", based off of David Byrne. What more could you ask for? Apparently a lot more, because Digit had an extremely limited run as a character. Perhaps too freaky-looking for the Muppets... perhaps his autism swagger was simply too much to handle. But we can handle him.

"When I die I'm going to leave my body to science... fiction!"
Wally Darling (Welcome Home)
A relative newcomer to the sexyman scene, Wally Darling is the star of 2023 horror ARG Welcome Home and, within the series fiction, the 70s children's show of the same name. His fashion and suave demeanor have won the hearts of thousands... but there seems to be something darker lurking under the surface. Does he have what it takes to make it to the second round?
(note: for consistency, we are focusing on the physical puppet version of this character, and not the cartoon)

what are your thoughts on the metallo drones since you seem to be a huge hank henshaw fan? I know he's metallo in the comics, or at least that's what osmosis has told me.
Oh boy time to be insufferable---
Tumblr media
~Actually!~ Hank Henshaw is Cyborg Superman! Later just shortened to The Cyborg! But also I can understand how it would be easy to mix up Metallo and Cyborg Superman. Anyway, you've activated my trap card so I'm going to infodump now.
If he's a human brain jammed in a mostly-robot body with a Kryptonite Heart, that's Metallo!
Metallo's original human identity was John Corben and they've varied the origin story a bit. The earliest appearance of Corben's Metallo actually had Corben as a reporter at the Daily Planet! I even make a callback to this in my "Life In Plastic" fic. And because his Robot Body made him bulletproof there was a whole mixup where Lois thought *he* was Superman's secret identity and he was like "hell yeah, baby, I'm totally Superman."
Tumblr media
Both this and his later Byrne Rebooted Origin more or less had him as "Criminal who got his body destroyed and replaced with a robot body with a Kryptonite heart."
The comic Superman: Secret Origin had him be a soldier that was favored by Lois's Dad, General Sam Lane and concordantly was kind of a creep towards Lois. Which lead to this frankly iconic exchange:
Tumblr media
This Corben Metallo-fication is basically the result of a military experiment gone sideways.
Superman: TAS had him as a mercenary on Luthor's payroll, but they gave it a particularly piquant twist by having him be a bit of an epicurean--he liked good food and hot babes and all the finer things in life being a Lex Luthor-funded mercenary could give him-- but then OH NO! Lex Luthor secretly infected him with a retrovirus to force him to transfer his consciousness to a robot body and also he's got a chunk of Kryptonite jammed in his chest now! Courtesy of Lex Luthor!
Tumblr media
He can't taste! He can't smell! He can no longer feel the warmth of a woman! (Actual line from the show, btw) And he's so pissed about it!! Also the whole "can't feel the warmth of a woman" thing also leads to him creeping on Lois.
So it's kind of interesting that, beyond the "Robot Body with a Kryptonite heart" concept, basically the one thing that's kind of been consistent with Metallo across his incarnations is... being a creep towards Lois.
So to bring this back to the Metallo Drones in MAWS... honestly I don't really register them *as* Metallo because they're drones and for me, the core of Metallo's character is like... human desires and human selfishness in contrasted with this monstrous, unstoppable, Terminator-like frame. The other core of Metallo's character is obviously his Kryptonite heart. Like, I mean sure you could see them as extensions of the Amertek CEO's selfishness, but the name seems more like a callback than an actual iteration of Metallo, and also they clearly have some very specific ideas of what kind of properties Kryptonite has in this show, so it's likely they can't have the Kryptonite heart for Plot Reasons. And like... I'm okay with that. I'm okay with this version of Superman kind of being contained by its own tech-y logic and you don't need to bring in the entirety of his Rogue's gallery to tell a good story. But like, also Metallo I think is supposed to feel a bit... personal. This is a dude who has a core of the Rock That Kills You and he's creeping on your girl! You really don't get that personal feeling from these drones. So y'know, I'm gonna miss him, but I'm also just seeing how they build up these drones and the rest of the villains in this show right now.
Now Hank Henshaw--! He's Cyborg Superman and in the comics he makes his big (cyborg) debut with the whole Death/Reign/Return of Superman saga! His origin story is basically he was an astronaut who, along with his crew, got exposed to Space Radiation, Fantastic Four style, only it fucked them up and made most of them die horribly, with the exception of Henshaw's wife. It's Adventures of Superman #466 if you ever want to check it out. It's incredibly fucked up but also pretty fun. But basically everyone thought Hank died from the radiation, when actually he transferred his consciousness into the technology of the lab around them, shooped his consciousness into some Kryptonian tech, and then popped up for "Reign of the Supermen" as Cyborg Superman (spoiler alert if you haven't read it but also PLEASE READ IT--the nuking of Coast City and the villain turnaround and Green Lantern coming in with a steel chair is SO GOOD).
I do love the idea of a villain being someone who was both collateral damage from one of Superman's previous adventures, but also someone Superman ultimately failed to save. I have no idea what direction they're going to take with Hank Henshaw in MAWS, but I LOVE that he has a lot of Superman's classic appearance--especially with the little hair curl in front! It suits him so much!!

Ryuichi Sakamoto (January 17, 1952 - March 28, 2023)
Professor Sakamoto was one of Japan’s most successful musicians, acclaimed for work in Yellow Magic Orchestra as well as solo albums and film scores.
As a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra alongside Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, Sakamoto created joyous and progressive electronic pop in the late 1970s and early 1980s, alongside solo releases. He acted alongside David Bowie in the 1983 film Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence and composed its Celebrated theme, the first in a series of film scores including Oscar-winning work in 1987 with David Byrne and Cong Su for Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor.
Alongside YMO, Sakamoto continued releasing solo albums including 1980’s B-2 Unit, another influence on the robotically funky sound of electro that also foreshadowed other dance music styles. After focusing purely on solo work, he forged further connections in the west, collaborating with musicians including Iggy Pop, Robert Wyatt, Laurie Anderson, David Sylvian and more. Sylvian contributed Forbidden Colours, a vocal version of one of Sakamoto’s most famous works, the theme to second world war drama Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence. Sakamoto also starred in the film as a prisoner of war camp commander.
Following The last Emperor (in which he also had an acting role), he collaborated with Bernardo Bertolucci again for The Last Buddha, and with Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence director Nagisa Oshima for Gohatto. He also scored two films by Brian De Palma (Snake Eyes and Femme Fatale), plus Wild Palms for Oliver Stone, High Heels for Pedro Almodóvar, the 1990 film adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, and more. His 2015 score for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film The Revenant was nominated for Golden Globe, Bafta and Grammy awards. In 2019, he composed the music for an episode of dystopian TV drama series Black Mirror. He took no further acting roles, aside from appearing as a film director in Rain, a music video for Madonna.
Mr Sakamoto released a steady schedule of solo releases throughout the 1990s and onwards, and wrote a piece for the opening ceremony of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. In 1999 he debuted the multimedia opera project Life, in collaboration with artist Shiro Takatani with contributions from Bertolucci, Pina Bausch and more. He and Takatani extended the concept into installation work from 2007 onwards.
Also in 2007, he began the ambitious Schola project, curating 17 compilations of global music ranging from composers such as Ravel and Beethoven to Japanese pop. It was released via his record label Commons, set up in 2006, which has also released work by artists including Boredoms and OOIOO.
In 2002, he began a fruitful partnership with German musician Carsten Nicolai, who used his Alva Noto alias for four collaborative albums of minimalist electronica.
Mr Sakamoto was also an environmental campaigner, opposing the use of nuclear power, and creating the forestry project More Trees to enable carbon offsetting.

Galactic Formation RL-Z-U47 - AKA "Mirkov's Maelstrom"
Initially discovered in 1952 by Dr. Ivan Mirkov of the Moscow Deep-Space Observation Unit 4, RL-Z-U47 has baffled the scientific community for 3/4ths of a century.
While theories vary, NASA would like to assure everyone that RL-Z-U47 is not looking at us, certainly not at you in particular. It's ridiculous to think that a sixteen parsec wide structure with a highly 'DNA adjacent' spectrogram reading would be interested in our tiny world, even if it wasn't obviously just a big cloud of bismuth dust. Which it is.
The image(s) above in this post were made using an autogenerated prompt and/or have not been modified/iterated extensively. As such, they do not meet the minimum expression threshold, and are in the public domain. Prompt under the fold.
Prompt: a bottle of MONSTER brand bottled citrus rage ectoplasm, glass bottle, vibrant glow, photorealistic, 4k high detial photo:: a beautiful street fighter in a sequin dress, character design by akiman and bengus, 1 9 9 6, Street fighter alpha 3, flat cell shading:: retro dark vintage sci-fi 2D matte dark gouache illustration dark empress of the pterodactyls:: curvy britney spears, full body character design illustration by akiman and john byrne, for street fighter alpha 3, large build, plump, whiplash curves, line art with flat anime cel shading:: A photograph of an intricate pattern made from turquoise and black rubber bands, forming concentric circles that seem to dance in the air with their vibrant colors. The background is a solid white color, creating a stark contrast against the colorful patterns. This design would be suitable for use as a digital backdrop or wallpaper, adding depth and vibrancy to any visual composition.:: ,wallpaper cd art, a starry sky, planet and aliens, in the style of cubist shattered planes, realistic landscape paintings, larry elmore, futuristic robots, northern china's terrain, light navy and purple, crystalline and geological forms
--
This is a 'prompt smash' experiment, combining random (mostly) machine-generated prompts into a single prompt with multiple sub-prompts. Midjourney blends concepts in these situations, making vivid but essentially random results.

Fully Atlantean Aquaman: Pre COIE, Aquaman is as you probably know him from the movies: Born of Atlanna and lighthouse keeper Tom Curry. Post COIE, they introduce Aquaman as a character who was abandoned at birth for being blond. He was raised by dolphins before meeting Arthur Curry who taught him how to speak and do human stuff. Since new 52, this has been de-canonized and he is now movie-origin-aquaman again.
Titanseed Donna Troy: pre COIE, Wonder Girl was initially flashback Wonder Woman, then became a new character when the writer of the first Teen Titans comic didn't read Wonder Woman comics (and it showed). Eventually she was a girl Wonder Woman rescued from a fire who got powers from the other Amazons. Post COIE, Donna Troy has amnesia and does not know where she is from but it is revealed she is one of twelve children who were rescued by Titans of Myth, who gave them part of their powers and raised them on New Cronos in space, then took their memories away and jettisoned them to their original planets.
Fel Andar Hawkman: Pre COIE, silver age hawkman (the thanagarian) was a space cop from Thanagar coming to earth to capture Byth and also learn about police techniques. post COIE, katar was doing something else so he could not have taken place in silver age justice league adventures, so this was retconned to be Fel Andar, a thanagarian double agent who came to earth claiming he was Carter Hall (golden age hawkman)'s son. He betrays the JL during Invasion and also I think brainwashed his hawkgirl?
Literal-Fury powered Lyta Trevor and Helena Kosmatos: Pre COIE, Lyta was the daughter of Earth 2 Wonder woman and Steve Trevor (and helena did not exist). She had Amazon powers. Post COIE, Lyta gets her powers from the greek Furies, though she does not know that at first. They reveal that her biological mother (Helena Kosmatos) vowed revenge after she believed her nazi collaborator brother caused her mother's death, and she channeled Tisiphone. Helena at least can be fully taken over by Tisiphone, during which she is much more powerful, and also angry and murderous.
Byrne's Krypton: I was going to just say "Superman being literally the last son of Krypton" (no surviving Kryptonians besides him) but realized Byrne put in sooooooo many retcons. Anyway, he decided krypton was a very emotionless place and they didn't fuck, and superman was grown in a gestation chamber that literally birthed him on earth.
Atlantean Powergirl: In Earth 2, Kara (powergirl) is probably as you know her, she's from krypton but got to earth later. IIRC she was raised by Robots on a space ship but it's been a while since I read Infinity Inc. Post COIE, they have her be Arion's (a powerful mage from Atlantis in the past)... daughter? Grand daughter? Sadly I haven't read the comics that explained her origin.
Newbie Wonder Woman/George Perez's Wonder Woman and Themyscira: The main reason Donna's origin had to be changed was because Wonder Woman was completely relaunched - she was no longer around since Batman and Superman were, but came onto the scene as a superhero after Donna Troy as Wonder Girl was on Teen Titans. Perez also re-introduces Amazon lore, including the name Themyscira for paradise island.
