Regarding the "Does RWBY like women?" poll (yes, yes it does BTW).
You know... the whole poll debacle reminded me of something.
RWBY helped me expand my media diet by telling me that just because people hate something enmass, it could just all be bullshit coupled with mob mentality.
Instead of hatedoms getting me to think:
"Damn, I don't even wanna be associated with that show based on the rage it inspires."
My more skeptical brain is like:
"Okay, so why is it reeeeeeeally hated? Is it reeeeeeeally bad or are people going along with the crowd because critical thinking is too much of a burden in this capitalist hellscape?"
Because bad media literacy is in part a result of the fact that most geeks and normies alike aren't out to be legit critics but rather just want to enjoy the thing, gush about the thing and so forth. They can't exactly articulate their reasonings why like they're trying to get an A+ in Therapy Studies.
And THAT is how the YouTube Video Essay and Angry Critic scene takes off.
We dunk on the Nostalgia Critic (often for VERY real IRL grievances) but his catchphrase: "I remember it so you don't have to" is something many who'd come after would take to heart. These video maker people are taking about a thing you like and are explaining it in a way you not only agree with but makes you feel vindicated.
Be it for love... or for hate.
Because hatedom circles like the RWDE looks to video essays that reassure them, keep them from doubting their stance on the thing and how they enforce it.
With the burden of actually seeing the thing and thinking hard taken off of them, people can confidently say things like "RWBY prioritizes Jaune" despite not looking at any potential evidence in the show that might contridice it.
Which is why this is a call for everyone to question the popular opinions.
Does Jaune Arc reeeeeeally get that much narrative importance at the expense of the main girls?
Was Jaune reeeeeeeally a self-insert?
Was Ironwood reaaaaaally derailed in his character arc?
Was Adam reeeeeeeeally representative of the Faunus?
Was the Faunus reaaaaaally offensive?
And of course...
Was Monty Oum reeeeeeeeally the only one who's vision matter to the show above all else?
Ask yourself these questions and do the work to back them up. If people are giving you responses that contridict you, responses that take evidence from the work itself more often than not, then try to do the same in turn.
Think about that show or movie being panned? What if... you actually like it?
Not everybody is a critic... but we can at least try to.

In the content you have come to expect from this blog, I wish to talk about the hamburger in the Royal Realm. I will not beat around the bush. Here it is:
Tumblr media
I spend a lot of time agonizing about whether or not they have various foods in Soul Society, usually based on age of introduction to Japan, and my own feeble attempts extrapolate which cultural forces do or do not exist, but this one feels very straightforward: there is no way they have hamburgers in Soul Society.
Wait, no, I am going to roll that back slightly, because I think it is the nature of Joe Shinigami to smuggle any kind of anything small enough to be stuffed into a shihakushou back through a senkaimon, so it's not like there has never been a hamburger in Soul Society. Kensei looks very much like a burg man, and he's probably published instructions for how to make one in his cooking column, but I can't bring myself to believe they are more than a rare and very expensive novelty. Also, as is the way of Soul Society, no matter how carefully you source your ingredients which time-tested recipe you follow, it will come out subtly and indescribably wrong.
And yet! Kirio seems to have mastered the art! Or has she? As becomes evident in this subsequent shot, there is something deeply wrong with this burger: it appears to be roughly the same height as Rukia and probably twice the weight.
Tumblr media
The Royal Guard is known for innovating, and I'm so interested in this-- is Kirio trying out new foods for their reishi-holding capacities? Did she make this for Ichigo in particular, because it would otherwise be rare for her to encounter someone who has actually eaten a burger before? (Presumably Renji, who knows everything about the World of the Living, might also have some feedback). Where did she find out about burgers? The Royal Realm is basically the Los Alamos of Soul Society. It's not unthinkable that they figured out how to get Food Network up there.
I am so mad that we didn't get to see the full footage of everyone's trip through every stage of the Royal Realm. Did Kirio make Byakuya the Giant Hamburger? You know that Byakuya doesn't approve of anything invented or introduced to Japan after the Tokugawa Shogunate, but I feel like he would have great respect for anything he encountered in the Royal Realm. What I am saying is that I think it would be great if post-TYBW Byakuya gets into hamburgers with the signature intensity with which he pursues all of his interests.
PS: For full disclosure, the giant burg is anime-only. Presumably it got the Kubo seal of approval. But guess what he drew originally! (answer below the cut)

As much fun as shipping is it kinda sucks seeing people more upset about their ship not being canon (it was never gonna be) and overlook the rest of the story (good and bad)
like you really let your delusions run wild with this one and it was always gonna bite you in the ass :/

One of the main things about the Kittypets that really makes my eye twitch is the straight up confirmation that they have no culture at all, if very little. It's frustrating to think about how so many of these cats likely have Twolegs that come from various cultural backgrounds and thus they themselves were raised around that culture as well
And you mean to genuinely, unironically tell me that these house cats have no form of culture at all? Nothing that pertains to the indoors, or food, or gifts or anything? They just have no culture at all?
I get that with the Kittypets the fact that they're kept inside may stop any solid culture from developing- Except no I don't actually get it because most if not all Kittypets we see are actively let outside in their gardens or are just out and about
Here I'll make something literally off the top of my goddamn head
What if many of the big Twolegplaces have two main standout groups with different cultural beliefs/ideologies on staying indoors? Why not make them The Outers/Outwards vs The Nesters, why not make extremist Nesters actively lure strays into traps where they're forced to (hopefully) stay indoors, which could lead to many stray cats in shelters to be killed due to crowding; But Nester extremists just go "Oh well at least you died indoors". What about extreme Outers/Outwards who spread around fear and hateful propaganda towards any Kittypet who would rather stay indoors (Not explicitly a Nester, mind you. The assumption for Outers/Outwards is that "Many Kittypets who aren't open Outer supporters are very likely Nesters. This is why they pose a threat").
And that's not even to limit yourself, you can even think of more. What if there's a set of cultural beliefs that's based around being a Barn Cat? What if those beliefs were dubbed "The Haybales"? What if different Twolegplaces actually differed in their ideologies? Chelford could easily have an underground group of cats who believe in the Clan's beliefs and try to spread it around through silent propaganda. They could be mocked with the slang term "Clanhound".
Boom, done. That was just written as I went and it's a shock that these professional writers aren't even capable of expanding culture outside of the Clans that isn't looked down upon, brushed off, portrayed as uniquely evil, or all three. It's a letdown whenever rewrites expand so much on Clan culture or the culture of other groups we see, but nothing for any of the Twolegplaces. And the thing is, I get it, because the books all solely focus on the Clans only, why wouldn't they? It's Warrior Cats, not Kittypets. And that's why I think it sucks, we rarely ever get a look into other outsider groups and when we do they're almost always demonized and treated as a unique evil that the Clans would neeever do (Looking at RavenPaw's Path and Tree's Roots)
