Real life Captain Pellew was a BOSS. I love this.
Captain Pellew and the Dutton
On 26 January 1796 Captain Edward Pellew of HMS Indefatigable, dressed in splendid full dressed uniform, and accompanied by his wife, was on his way to a formal dinner in Plymouth with Doctor Hawker, vicar of Charles Church . Their route took them past the open space above the sea cliffs kown as the Hoe. Despite stormy weather crowds were gathered on the Hoe gesturing excitly out ot sea. Pellew stopped his carriage and went to investigate. It soon become clear the Dutton ( she was a former EIC ship) a troopship bound for the West Indies, had run on to rocks. Lying broadside against smashing waves she had lost her masts and was listing badly; the imminent loss of all aboard seemed in no doubt.

The Wreck of the ex East Indiaman ‘Dutton’ in Plymouth Sound, 26 January 1796 by Thomas Luny 1821
Pellew urged the onlookers to help (including the officers of Dutton, who enraged Pellew at having abandoned the passengers to their fate)- but nobody was willing to risk his life in the seething waters. The situation was desperate, so Pellew decided to go it alone. Quickly discarding his fine attire he threw himself into the sea and seizing the hawser ( a large ship’s rope) that the officers used to save themselves, and which was still attached to the ship, hauled himself hand over hand out to the stricken vessel. When he reached Dutton he clambered on deck and drew his sword. Assuming command, he told the frightened passengers three things: that they would all be saved if they quietly obeyed his orders, that he would be the last to quit the wreck- and that he would run through anyone who disobeyed him.
Tumblr media

Order was swiftly brought to the chaos aboard, despite the fact that many of the soldiers, believing ther end was near, had resorted to drink and were on a sorry state of inebriation. Pellew managed, with help from young Irishman Jeremiah Coghlan, to get two additional hawsers ashore and contrived an ingenious endless rope cradle to convey passengers to safety . Others were taken off in boats that rescuers had eventually managed to bring alongside. Almost all of the 500 men, women and children aboard were saved, including a three weeks old baby. Just between 2 and 20 were lost. Dutton had broken her back and was a total loss. The wreck was sold for £850. For this feat he was created a baronet on 18 March 1796, he was 39 years old at this time.

Biographical details for Siegfried and Evelyn
Thanks to @period-drama-slut's post which reminded me of the fact we see Siegfried and Evelyn's special marriage licence in 3x1! Zooming in on the frames gives us so many cool details about them:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is what it says as best as I can read it:
Siegfried Donald Farnon
Bachelor
25
A Captain in the Army Veterinary Corps
7 Dutton (or maybe Sutton? not sure) Road, York
Parish of St Matthew, York
Evelyn Alice Walker
Spinster
22
Daughter of Frank Walker
of 16 Crofters/Croftens (not sure) Lane, York
Currently staying at
of 16 Crofters/Croftens (not sure) Lane, York
Parish of St Matthew, York
Thought this would interest some of you! ❤️🫶
One thing that does frustrate me as someone who's done literally hundreds of hours of genealogy research for my family and read lots of records like this from the same time period is that Siegfried's parents names are missing, and that Evelyn's mother's name (and her maiden name) is missing. Evelyn's job missing isn't unusual (Spinster was used just to signify she was unmarried, if she was widowed it would have said Widow). Still though, frustrating nonetheless.

»»-------¤-------««
Simon watched as Kiera put herself into her mindset, feeling as if he literally watched her flip the switch to the soldier he was familiar with.
Her eyes didn't hold that familiar glow anymore. They were cold like his, ready to fight anyone in her path. Atta girl, love, he thought, smirking at her as the plane was landing. He was scared for her, their relationship progressing in the time they had spent together between, and afraid it was about to come to an end. He knew he had to set those feelings for her aside as he couldn't physically handle the thought of losing her. He knew it was a risk, but he'd be damned if that was a risk he was willing to take if it meant coming home to her. Taking a deep breath, he covered his face in that balaclava he loved so much to diffuse the Simon Kiera knew, but not for long.
He was Ghost.
Unbeknownst to her and Alejandro's team, Price and Gaz had been detained by Shadow Company just outside of Las Almas - their comms being taken from them as well as their weapons when they had first arrived after being tasked by Laswell after her findings.
They were his prisoners.
"Señora! So nice to see you." Alejandro smiled, greeting her with a friendly, brother-like hug as he and one of his men along with Soap walked along with him as they had been on a perimeter run outside of his base, getting to the gate just in time to shield themselves from the falling rain that was coming.
"Ghost! So nice to see you, Hermano." Soap nodded at his comrade, reaching out to shake his hand, a playful smirk smearing on his lips as if he was teasing Ghost about spending the brief holiday with Kiera.
"Likewise, mate."
"You too, Alejandro," She smiled. "Where's Graves?"
"He and Captain Price went out on reconnaissance with the Sergeant. Said he got a tip about Hassan."
"I'm sure he fucking did," She scoffed, winning a confused glance from Alejandro. "We need to find him."
"Why? What's wrong? -"
Just as Kiera was going to reply, three Jeeps in a convoy-style line stopped at the access point, two of his men standing on point by the entry as if they were guarding it after relieving themselves from the first Jeep. "What the hell?" Alejandro scoffed, walking up to Graves as he exited the vehicle, seeing he was armed. "What's this?"
"This is the immediate future," Graves replied, looking at the returning team before locking his eyes with Kiera. Gotcha. "Step away from the gate."
Kiera didn't like feeling of being surrounded by Graves and his men. She knew what was going to happen after seeing the somewhat satisfying gleam in his eye when he looked at her. Naturally, Ghost stepped closer to her, now standing behind her as he didn't like how one of Graves' men got too close.
"What?" Soap scoffed.
"You heard me."
Alejandro shook his head, "You're crazy. This is my base."
"It's not a base. This is a sizable covert facility, and I admire it. So, I'm taking it," Graves shrugged. "Now, I'm not sure why your team came back, but this is now a mission against our own, Colonel," He continued, his gaze turning stark as he looked at Kiera. Oh, he knew she was mad, but it only spurred him on further. He had things in his control now. "Step away from Officer Dutton. She's coming with us."
"No, I don't take orders from you," Alejandro said, standing in front of her. "What's your point of reason?"
"That's classified information, Colonel. I'm afraid I'm not able to discuss that with you as it's above your pay grade. Step aside."
"Then you can discuss it with me," Kiera added. "Tell me - actually, tell all of us why you're doing this. I'm sure we'd all like to know so we can... how was it you put it when you interrogated Hassan? To nail your ass, huh?"
"I'm not doing this," Graves shook his head, nodding to one of his men to make an attempt to contain her by ties. "I suggest you don't fight it, Dutton. This'll go very bad for you."
The soldier grabbed her harshly by her wrist, putting it behind her back before her other hand followed. Ghost's fists clenched at the sight before him. You just made a big mistake, mate. "And I suggest that you tell everyone here why you're doing this. You know I'm a threat and you don't want a hit on your ego, huh?"
"Dutton, I'm not going to tell you again," Graves warned, the loading of his rifle catching her attention. Oh, fuck. "Smith, bring her over here. You boys have been relieved. Thank you for your service."
"We just fuckin' got here?" Soap scoffed. "We were called back."
"I didn't make that call, Sergeant. The only call I'm making is what I was directed. Seems like your little friend here has been sabotaging you this entire time -"
Kiera laughed, "Yeah fuckin' right. Maybe take that accountability for yourself. How exactly have I been sabotaging you? Because being a threat to uncover a little secret isn't sabotage. It's justice."
"Smith, shut her up. Step out of the way, Colonel."
"Again, I don't take orders from you." Alejandro replied, stepping closer to him as if he were territorial, his voice threatening.
"Didn't Valeria say that? Now that makes me question what else I don't know about your affiliation with a drug lord as well as bringing in a Case Officer to the battlefield when they have no business being there. Seems like I'm onto something else now, huh?"
"What the fuck did you just say to me, pendejo?"
"You're out of line, Graves." Soap warned, putting his hand on Alejandro's shoulder, physically holding him back from rearranging Graves' face.
"Don't do that," Graves pointed his finger. "Don't do that. No one needs to get hurt here. Let me take my prisoner and get my intel."
"Are you threatening us?" Ghost spoke up, uneasy about the feeling he fought in his stomach. He looked at Kiera, seeing that her eyes were of a warrior. She went too easily - like she accepted it.
Why?
Ghost knew after taking a few moments to watch her think - she had an idea up her sleeve and she wasn't about to tell a soul about it, not even Ghost or Laswell. Her herself knowing was too much.
"Soldier, I don't make threats. I make guarantees. So, let's not do this."
"I'm calling Shepherd." Soap scoffed, walking towards the barracks.
"General Shepherd sends his regards. He told me y'all wouldn't like this."
You motherfucker, Kiera thought, tugging at the ties that held her wrists behind her back. I knew it.
"He knows about this?" Ghost scoffed.
"He's put me in command of this operation from here on out. So y'all need to stand down. It's time to let the pros finish this."
Soap and Ghost shared a glance.
Another fight on our hands, Johnny.
Kiera's intimidating laugh broke the tension for a brief moment, "Yeah, so you can host another shitty recon and get all of your men killed? Isn't that how it went last time? Called it a "milk run," right?"
He pointed his pistol at her head and Ghost's heart sank at the sight. "I won't tell you again. Shut your mouth before I shut it for you, for good."
"Fuckin' do it. Do me the goddamn favor."
Stop talking bloody stupid, Kiera. Don't be the hero.
Graves knew she wasn't scared of him or his men, but he wasn't about to stand down to her. He knew she was a threat and was slowly exposing him with her petty words. He was going to get his intel before completing his mission assigned to him by Shepherd:
Tumblr media
"Who the fuck do you think you are, cabrón? My men are inside!"
"I'm afraid not. Your men have been... detained."
Alejandro snarled, lunging for the American leader as his betrayal sunk through him like a ton of bricks. The rest of Graves' men tackled Alejandro, leaving three more to make a pathetic attempt of capturing Ghost and Soap.
Ghost used his elbow to target the soldier behind him as Soap grabbed one by the neck. Ghost saw that one of Graves' men had gone to strike Soap behind his head. His attempt failed as a throwing knife landed in his neck. Ghost then ducked behind the Jeep as rapid fire echoed from under the entrance checkpoint. "Fuck." He grumbled, seeing that he only had a clip full of ammunition in his pistol, knowing he had to eliminate the need for ammo.
He looked at Soap from behind the Jeep after hearing him groan in pain. He had been shot.
A bullet clipped his upper bicep, fortunately, but it still didn't stop him from falling to the ground and clutching it.
"Go, Johnny, get out of there! Soap, GO!" Ghost shouted, the beam from the Jeep's taillight blurring his vision as well as the pouring rain.
Soap nodded at Ghost to acknowledge he had heard his plea. Moving the deceased soldier out of his way before leaping the short concrete curb that protected him from the rapid shots of fire Graves had put out.
Graves scoffed after he had realized both Soap and Ghost had escaped his grasp. He sighed, turning around at the sound of Kiera's giggle. "Yeah, looks like you're in control, Shadow-1." She mocked.
He didn't reply. Instead, he nodded for Smith to find something to strain their vision - both her and Alejandro.
He made his way to search the area behind the Jeep he saw Ghost dart behind, his weapon ready to open fire. "You there, Ghost? That was a big mistake, brother."
"Sir, both members are M.I.A."
"Shit," Graves grumbled, running a hand through his now-wet hair. "Find 'em!"
"Copy that, sir. Where are we taking them?" Smith asked, referring to Kiera and Alejandro.
"I'll inform you over the comms," he said lowly. "All Shadows, listen up! We are switching to another channel. Do it now before going after our targets! We have no room for injury here."
"Roger!"
"I'm not giving her any room to think of an escape plan," Graves continued to Smith, his voice low as he watched one of his men use a hood, similar to an execution hood, to cover her and Alejandro's head. "I'm getting my intel and we're going to get those missiles and Hassan. If anyone knows how to do it best, it's her."
Smith nodded. "Want me to escort you?"
"No. Lead the team in finding the Brits. I have two of his other members detained as well."
"Copy that," Smith nodded, ensuring his rifle was loaded before gesturing for the rest of Graves' men. "Let's move! It's likely they went to Las Almas!"
»»-------¤-------««
The Jeep barreled down a dirt road, shaking both Kiera and Alejandro violently. Her vision was dark, and her hearing was limited as the material of the hood irritated the sensitive skin of her face. It smelled like lead and brass - sure that the hood was used to carry bulk amounts of ammunition. She was sat in the middle of the rear seat, her shoulder pinned to Alejandro's bicep as the soldier sitting next to her took up enough space that led her to sit closer to her brother in arms. Her shoulders ached as her wrists began to feel raw at the excessive pressure the ties were causing her.
"Take a breath, señora. It'll be alright." Alejandro whispered, sensing her nervousness.
"Oh, I am." She grit her jaw.
"Doesn't sound like it."
The Jeep came to a harsh stop, sure to send its prisoners into a forward jolt if they weren't prepared for it. They breathed heavily; their brains not able to decipher what was going to happen next. She felt the effects of true isolation, even though she wasn't alone.

When War Follows You Home
Tumblr media
Moving down the hallway with my gun raised I had Kayce at my side. We were both assigned to the same mission. But what I saw in front of me would haunt me for the rest of my life. I froze not being able to pull the trigger and hurt the mother and daughter that were being held hostage by their own husband/father. "Kayce-" I cut myself short because hr pulled his trigger making them collapse dead burning the image into my memory.
Shooting upright in my bed I screamed grabbing the bedsheets in my fingers. Throwing my hair in front of my face my chest tightened during that time. Bending my head down in between my fingers I gasped. Fumbling for my phone on the nightstand I dialed the only person who would understand. "Kayce, I...I can't sleep."
"Neither can I, darling. Do you uh - want me to come over?" He croaked through the phone where I could tell he was crying.
The words flew out of my mouth. "Yes, please. I need you."
"I'm on my way then." He hung up the phone where I laid my phone down tossing the covers away. Sliding out of the bed I shrugged on one of my sweatshirts heading towards my front porch. Closing the front door I knew Kayce didn’t live very far from my place so I could just sit out and wait.
Kayce and I had joined the navy together. He went in to get money to feed his wife and son. But I wanted to fight for my country more than anything. Yet once we came home after that mission I didn’t realize that I had never been that rattled in my life. Leaning back in my swing I finally saw his truck pull into the driveway. “Y/n!” He called my name, shutting the door running up the stairs.
Flinging my arms around his neck I started sobbing into his light brown jacket. He wrapped his arms tightly around my waist. "I didn't know who else to call!"
"Hey, hey, I said you could always call me. But it's cold out, let's get you inside." He broke the hug barely to just open the door leading me to the living room couch.
He went into the kitchen while I sat down on the couch. Wrapping the blanket around myself tightly I hugged my legs up to my chest. "I just hate waking up like this. I have to…relive it all over again."
"Do you want to talk about it?" Kayce came from the kitchen handing me a cup of warm milk.
He sat down across from me on the couch holding his own cup in his hands. "I'm not sure it would make me feel better. Does it you?"
"I don't really talk about it with anyone but you." He slumped his shoulders heavily.
This wasn't the first time that I had woken up like this. Kayce and I had done this same night for almost two years now. No matter how much our family's tried to help. They still couldn't understand the torture we dealt with. "Hmm…everytime the nightmare replays in my head. I…I lock onto the eight year old girl's eyes. She just looked so helpless…"
“I see their bodies collapse right in front of you. And I think what if I hadn’t done it-“ Kayce trailed off, beginning to cry wiping tears away with his jacket sleeve.
Reaching across I grabbed his freehand in mine where we met the others' gaze. “Kayce, don’t go there. We didn’t have a choice. They….they would have killed us.”
“But they killed our medic and captain. Either way I failed them. Now…I have to live with that.” He bent his head down sitting his cup on the table stomping over to stand in front of the window.
Sitting my cup down I sighed walking up behind him. “Kayce, the only way you and I can get through this is together.”
He clutched his hands into fists at his sides. He bent his head down croaking through tears. “It torture’s me, Y/n. It puts me in this type of darkness and I don’t feel like I can escape it.”
“Kayce, look at me.” I cupped his face in my hands making him look at me with those brown eyes. He sniffs alongside me when I almost couldn’t get the words out. “You aren’t alone in your nightmares. I feel everything you do….And I will always be there to help you through this…”
He collapsed against me where I grunted, leading him back onto the couch since I wasn’t as strong as he was. He death gripped my shirt in his hands sobbing. “Thank you, Y/n…I don’t know what I would do without you.”
“You’ll never have to think about this alone. War may have followed us home…” I buried my face against his chest needing comfort from the cowboy too. Running my fingers through his hair he sighed in relief finding comfort from it. “But it won’t break us as long as we are there for one another.”

The American Ship Victory (1850s)
The Victory was built in Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1851 by Benjamin Dutton “for the China trade”, according to the inscription on the back of the painting.
Captain Oliver Lane (1798-1867) commissioned the ship Victory and led it on his long career as a globetrotting sailor. The captain kept a journal of his voyages circumnavigating the world and was noted as “one of the best sailors afloat” by his contemporaries. However, Captain Lane often wrote longingly of his home and family in Annisquam, Massachusetts.
Painted by Namcheong in Whampoa, China in the 1850s. The painting is now held in the collections of Historic New England. This image has been edited to reduce the appearance of cracks on the surface of the painting.

Ink Stained: Spencer Dutton x Reader
Tumblr media
Tagging: @kmc1989
Tumblr media
Spencer doesn’t come home from the war. Instead he detours to Africa to hunt in the Serengeti for five years because he’s too ruined, too broken to face the people waiting for him. The only way he feels alive is when he’s facing down death itself, in fact it’s the only way he feels anything anymore.
The night his throat is almost torn out by a leopard is the night that everything changes. He feels it’s putrid breath hot on his face, it’s claws sinking into his skin, tearing through his flesh and instead of welcoming the oblivion as he always imagined he would he fights. He fights because in his final moments his thoughts are of you, of the girl he fell in love with back in Montana.
The one he taught to shoot on Sunday afternoons, who raced with him on her horse across the pastures until they were both wild and breathless, tumbling into the grass, making love underneath the sun. The one he made a promise to by wrapping a daisy around her ring finger, one she’d still been wearing the day he left.
It’s a week later he begins to read the letters. You’d stopped sending them years ago but he still kept every single one of them, along with his Aunt Cara’s. He’s never written back, he hadn’t wanted to fill your head with the horrors he was experiencing overseas.
It takes him half the night to work through with them. He reads about your life in his absence, how you still bathe in the stream where he undressed you for the first time, how your Papi passed away so the ranch now belongs to your brother, he lives your highs, your lows and then eventually your resolution.
You let me go a long time ago, you say in your final letter, maybe it’s time for me to do the same.
His tears, they stain the ink because you’re probably married by now to one of the other men that tried to court you, a couple of babes running around your ankles.
He begins to work through Cara’s letters then, a glass of whiskey in his hand for fortification. He catches glimpses of you through the pages, your life is still inevitably entwined within The Yellowstone. His Aunt Cara thought the world of you before he left and evidently she still does.
It’s the final one that makes him pack up his things, the one that details the shooting on the way back from Bozeman.
Your Kit, it reads, she shot finer than most the men out there that day and she paid the price for it with a bullet. The doctor says it’s in God’s hands now.
His brother, his uncle, Jack and now you…
He isn’t sure his heart can endure the loss.
He books passage to the Americas the next day, sending word over the wire of his homecoming.
I’m on my way, he writes on the paperwork before handing it over to the ship’s captain. I’ll be home as soon as I can.

5, 7, 13, and 20 for fanfic asks?
5. Fic most proud of writing This is a toss up - because I am one of those people who likes their own stuff a lot. :-D But, one of the Big Three: Damnatio Memoriae from the Lucifer fandom, Running Up That Hill for Agenst of SHIELD, and Wrong Side of Heaven for Magnum 2018. Mostly for different reasons, but they all have the same vein of "I got mad at canon and I fixed it".
Lucifer was a roller coaster for me - I loved season 1, season 2 was okay, 3 made me want to throw something at the screen 90% of the time, season 4 WAS EPIC, and I gave up halfway through season 5 and never finished the series. Damnatio was written because I wanted much more involvement of the supernatural, not just a therapy/self discovery mixed in with crime of the week. Also, being raised adjacent to Catholicism, I was getting really irritated that they weren't even using the comic lore, and missing the basic fundamentals of the sources they were pulling from. This story had a lot of reader feedback, to the point of it being almost choose your own adventure. As it went on, I would ask readers to pick from two options that I had rolling around in my head, and it actually worked really well to keep the ball moving with my writing.
Running Up That Hill was again another one where I just got mad at canon, but because I don't like the narrative of "these people are exempt from moral standards while this person is Wrong No Matter What", and I probably would've let it slide except the issue I had was that the one that Wrong No Matter What had all of his life changing trauma as a child and then had it reinforced his entire adult life. Everyone else was an adult when Bad Things happened, and I don't like the hypocrisy of saying "get over it" to someone who legitimately doesn't have the toolset to do that.
Wrong Side I love because this actually was my first foray into something that had no supernatural elements to it whatsoever, and based firmly in reality, and a reality I knew pretty well. I wasn't a huge fan of how the TV show just glossed over the fact that these guys were POW's for a year and a half of a terrorist organization that tortures and kills people with such violence that they became a whole new subsect of terrorism. Like, no, these guys aren't just going to walk away without an issue. And the fact that they were sold out by someone who said to have loved them? AND THEY HAVE NO FALL OUT FROM THIS?! Get fucked, shitty narrative. Suicide in the veteran community is at a high not seen since post-WWII, and these fuckers have the audacity to suggest that you're just being a little bitch if you can't acclimate to civilian life.
7. Favorite ship to write Well, that's pretty easy - none. Romance is rarely done well, and I have never liked anyone enough to relate to the narrative of "Well, I'm throwing all of my friendships out the window because now I have a RomAnTic InTereSt" and it irritates me to no end. if anything, my favorite ship is between Captain Kirk and the Enterprise.
13. Latest fic written/last WIP? A fix it fic for Yellowstone that showcases the brothers Kayce and Jamie, and because I am on a western kick, research for a Magnificent Seven fic that will likely never see the light of day, but I still love the show and the characters, where Ezra (the gambler from Georgia) is a spy for the Union during the Civil War.
20. Hardest Character to write/get the characterization right for? The female characters written by men. And I realize that sounds really weird, but because I swear to god men don't understand being a woman, they're just shit at writing them, and they say/do the dumbest things because guys would do that shit, or, worse, the guys writing the character are using them as hyperboles for women they think did them wrong. And then because the writers don't understand them, I can't understand them, and they wind up being the people that in real life, I'd want to hit with my car. Beth Dutton is a great example of this - some of the things she says that I know are supposed to come off as "strong, powerful woman" make me physically recoil and hide my face with a pillow while watching because What the fuck nobody would ever say that and it's actually cringeworthy. Until women started getting involved in the writing process for Magnum and Lenkov was fired, I absolutely wanted to stab Higgins in 90% of her scenes. Post Lenkov - I actually found her really sweet sometimes, and actually relatable.
That being said, the other ones that I'm not good at because it is so far outside my sphere of comprehension are characters like Angie or Dani off of Will Trent and Prodigal Son. I love those characters, they are complex and unique and I love them, but I don't have relatable experience to them at all, and they are some of the hardest people I have tried to write (which is why I don't have fic in those fandoms even though I love them).

2023: The Year that Should Have Been Samuel L. Jackson's
Anyone who follows my blog knows I really like Samuel L. Jackson. I don't know him personally or anything. I just think he seems fun. I like how he says he makes the kinds of movies he would want to see as a kid (and isn't precious about the ~art~ of acting). Brie Larson also said some things in the Captain Marvel press tour about how confident he is, and now sometimes I think "Pretend you are Samuel L. Jackson" when I feel anxious in a work situation.
Some other things I like about him:
He was expelled from Morehouse College for his acts of civil disobedience. Though I can't say I support some of his later criminal acts or drug use.
I enjoy the random fun fact that he was an usher at Martin Luther King Jr's funeral.
Unlike a lot of the MCU actors, SLJ reads comics. He was the one who saw his face in The Ultimates and was like, "Uh. WTF, Marvel?" just because he happened to read it. (Companies are not allowed to use an individual's likeness without their consent, he could have sued Marvel, instead he made a deal for them to put him in movies if they made them.)
Regarding the above, I think a lot is said about how Feige and Favreau were such visionaries to create the MCU. And obviously they did the work. But I think SLJ saw it even earlier. (Ultimates came out in 2002, six years before Iron Man would happen and the deal he made would pan out.)
I know SLJ has made some bad movies. Some are fun bad. Some are just bad. But he has a way of making even the worst dialogue interesting. (IDK. I saw a teen spy movie he was in with Hailee Steinfeld and Sophie Turner. They are both actresses that I like, but any scene he wasn't in was kind of boring. And I was like, "Whoa how did you make me pay attention; I was falling asleep?")
Wow this post is long and I haven't even gotten to the point.
The point is that Secret Invasion should have been his moment to shine in the MCU. He never led a project before. And it's being called the worst thing ever. But it's so frustrating that it was so bad with the caliber of actors they had. It should not have been this way.
To add insult to injury, Jackson finally got to perform August Wilson's The Piano Lesson on Broadway.
Jackson was part of the original cast of that play, working with the celebrated playwright himself... at Yale Repertory Theater. When it came time to move the play to Broadway, Charles S. Dutton replaced him.
So last year a Broadway revival was staged. It was directed by his wife, LaTonya Richardson Jackson. Now Jackson played the older man, and his friend Denzel's son, John David Washington, played the role Jackson had originated.
Jackson was nominated for a Tony. But didn't win. The internet made fun of his reaction to the results being read.
I just feel like, I'd have been bummed too. He didn't slap anybody or complain about losing. He was gracious.
I keep thinking about what could have been. He's 74 years old (doesn't look it, imo), but he won't be around forever. I want him to be appreciated in his lifetime.
And goddamnit I am still mad they didn't air his Lifetime Achievement Oscar speech.

"Excuse me, excuse me," Zoë hurried to catch Dahlia as she exited the fire station. "Dahlia Cruz-Dutton, right? Firehouse paramedic captain? What are your thoughts on the rumor that there's an entity above us, potentially controlling us? Do you think we'll see a spike in deaths following Quinn Buckley's announcement that she can walk in the night with the monsters? Did you personally see the entity?" She held her phone out, recording everything.

"Captain Price," Laswell said as she met Price in a local shop in his hometown, stating it was serious business that she needed to discuss with him. "Thank you for meeting me. I'm sorry to be bringing you here before Thanksgiving-"
"No need to apologize, Laswell, you're the one a long way from home."
"Tea?"
"I'm a long way from a proper pint," He replied, sighing as his aching body sat in the chair across from her, watching her toy with her wedding ring. "What can I do for you?"
"I did some digging. I think we have a big problem on our hands, Captain."
"Bigger than the missile crisis?"
"Yes," She sighed. Price could tell she was nervous about what she was about to say judging by her jagged breathing and the slight twitch in her eye. "I'm afraid this is about to be a war against our own."
"You're scaring me, Laswell," Price said, leaning forward on the table in hopes of catching eye contact. "Tell me."
"I did some digging - I uncovered redacted intel regarding a black bag operation conducted by General Shepherd and carried out by Shadow Company. They were transacting American-made ballistic missiles to our allies fighting Russians in the middle east a couple of months ago. The mission didn't go as planned. Reconnaissance led by Graves said that the route was clear of enemy activity, but his reports were wrong. The shipment was spotted before it arrived at its destination. The Russian PMCs executed his entire team in an ambush and got a hold of Shadow's comms. They learned Shepherd was behind it and Russia gave the missiles to Hassan. Shepherd's intentions were good, but the shipments were illegal and off the books. He and Graves buried it. The cover-up is always worse than the crime. We were getting too close by sending Kiera to clarify her reconnaissance and they are not going to let that happen."
"How does Shepherd know why Dutton went in the first place?" Price questioned.
"Because he did some digging on his own behind my authority. If he tells Graves, he is going to have him try to eliminate her unless she gives them intel."
"My team won't let that happen."
"I don't doubt your intentions, John, but I know that if she's who they want, she can confirm and I can have both Graves and Shepherd detained and this entire mission is back to where it belongs, and we can get back on track with finding the missiles."
Price sighed, "Are you going to make the call?"
"Yes. I will when I get back to the States."
"I'll get my team regrouped. Gaz and I will make our way to Las Almas. We meet with Colonel Vargas and compose a plan."
Laswell nodded, "Thank you, John. Please, keep Kiera on a tight hold. She's valuable information."
"Let's mention a valuable being, yeah?"
"Agreed."
»»-------¤-------««
I sat next to her at her parent's massive dinner table, keeping a subtle eye on her out of my peripheral vision. She didn't tell me what Laswell spoke to her about over the phone, and I knew better than to ask, but by what I could see, she was anxious. She barely touched her plate of food, and we'd been at dinner for a good hour now. Her leg shook anxiously under the table, but it didn't stop me from sneaking my hand under to rest my palm against her knee in hopes of soothing her anxiety. I didn't keep it there for long, though, as the last thing I wanted was for her father to take notice and say something about it. He was intimidating for an old man, and I definitely didn't want to earn myself on his bad side, especially when I wanted to pursue a relationship with his daughter.
"Are you okay, sweetheart?" Her mother, Eva, asked from across the table, patting her lips with a napkin and looking at Kiera with a worried expression. Her mom was adorable - bright blue eyes and short hair that came down to her shoulders with the sweetest southern accent I had ever heard, which made sense considering Eva told me that she was born and raised in West Virginia, met Bud at a train station while on her vacation to Wyoming, and ended up not coming home because they ran away together, getting married three months after they had met. It was a typical love story if I had to admit, but I could tell that their bond was as strong as the bond I had with my teammates.
Kiera forced a nod, "Hm? Yeah, I'm fine. Just... thinking."
Her father looked at her with stern eyes, studying her expression. By what I could see, it was unfortunate that he had recognized Kiera's expression to be something that was a regular occurrence. "Do you need a word, honey?"
She looked down at her lap before looking up at the ceiling and releasing a breath, "Yes."
"Let's go." He nodded his head towards the door, wiping his mouth with a napkin before folding it next to his plate, excusing himself from the table as he followed her through the house.
"She gets like that..." Her older brother, Dennis, chimed in, his mouth full of food and seeming to shrug off his sister's anxiety as if it was normal.
Eva scoffed, "Why do you always say it like it's normal, Dennis? I'm sorry for him, Simon. She has hard moments after she comes home."
"I understand. I'm the same way sometimes, unfortunately. Though she seems to have a lot on her shoulders."
"She's always been one to pile too much on herself," Dennis continued. "But this is the least of it. She's not as... violent as she usually is. Think it's because of you."
"I'm afraid Dennis is right. She's still figuring out how to balance a home life with work. I just hate that she does this, but she is her father's daughter-"
"Just like him," Dennis snickered. "She's more of a man than me."
Yeah, seems like it by what I can tell...
"I was surprised when I saw a different side of her when we landed." I admitted.
"What is she like when she's... you know...?" Dennis arched his brow in curiosity, sitting back in his chair.
"Her first day, she slung my partner around like he was a ragdoll because he disrespected her if that answers your question."
"She's just like her father," Eva sighed. "Bud never gave any man a chance to say something wrong to him for a second time. Kiera's always been his little princess. She learned to do things at a younger age than Dennis."
"Because I don't want anything to do with it, mom."
"Mhm, you've switched your saddle for a tie, and that's fine, just make sure you can be a man in a tie that people can trust."
"I know better not to."
"Good boy. Finish up your food before it gets cold."
"You weren't telling Kiera that."
"Because she has a special guest. Can't embarrass her by nagging!" Eva giggled, patting Dennis' shoulder.
"So, are you like her new boyfriend or something?"
I wanted to say yes so bad, but I had to keep things quiet between us, even if I was oblivious to the fact that I blushed when Dennis asked me that question.
"No. She offered me a stay since we're on duty together and I don't have a family of my own to holiday with."
»»-------¤-------««
"What's wrong, sweetheart?" Her father asked her, easing himself into the rocking chair on the front porch. "Is it this man you brought home?"
"No," She shook her head, taking a long drag from her vape pen, blowing the smoke from her lungs and into the night air. "I just got a fucking call."
"Jesus Christ, Kiera," Her father scoffed. "Sweetheart, I love our man-to-man talks, but we need to set some goddamn boundaries here."
"Sorry," She shook her head, remembering that her father hated it when she swore like a sailor. "I just got a call from my supervisor."
"What happened?"
"I have to go back. I'm wheels-up Monday morning."
Bud's heart sank, a frown plastering on his wrinkled face, "Was the mission failed?"
"No, dad. I think I've compromised myself. I messed up."
"You don't mess up, Kiera. What's eating at you?"
"We have a suspicion that a leader on U.S. soil is planning to betray the team I was sent to help in Mexico. He knows I'm a threat and it's possible he already knows I'm too close, so he's going to try and terminate me unless I give him what he wants."
Her father was never one for sentimental statements, but he loved and cared for Kiera deeply. She was his only daughter, his baby girl, but his soldier. "Kiera Faith, look at me," he said, standing to his aching feet and putting his hands on her shoulders. "You know what to do. You will complete your mission and come home for good. Through hell or high water, remember?"
She frowned, looking down to her feet before pressing herself into her father's arms, staining his pearl-snap button-up with her tears. He held her, letting her cry into him just like she would when she was a little girl. "I'm so scared, daddy," She cried. "I want to do you proud, but what if I don't make it back home?"
"I'm not going to add my humor into this, sweetheart, but you will."
She scoffed, knowing where she got her humor from, "I already know what you're going to say. I'm either coming home on foot or in a box. You don't have to sugarcoat it, daddy."
"I keep forgetting," He breathed a chuckle, pressing his cheek to her ear. "You listen to me real good - do what you know, and they won't be able to touch you. He is an enemy. You're one of the eight officers on the west coast - the best of the best. You'll come home."
She nodded against his chest, inhaling the musk of his cologne as if she were to smell it for the last time.
"You're a soldier, honey. I love you. Let's enjoy the rest of this dinner and you can give it hell come Monday."
She breathed a chuckle, "You just know how to lighten the situation, huh?"
"You learn it from the best, sweetheart. Just... Just don't tell your mother yet. She'll be a wreck."
"Never have, daddy."
»»-------¤-------««
Kiera and Simon lay in her bed that night entangled in each other's arms. Simon lay on his back as her head rested on his chest, her fingers wrinkling the loose fabric of his shirt in a lazy attempt to distract herself from dark thoughts. His arm wrapped around her shoulder, rubbing circles on her bare bicep as he let her think in peace.
He felt her hand come to trace the thick veins on his free hand that was draped over his stomach, admiring their strength for an enemy, but their softness for her. She felt his chest heave a heavy sigh before he spoke in a soft tone, "Do you want to talk about it, love?"
"I don't know what to say," She frowned, keeping her gaze on his hand. "I feel weak if I say I'm scared."
His chest then rose in a chuckle, "But you're not and you know it. I've seen you kill a man my size with your bloody hands."
"So? There's always someone stronger. That Mexican bitch almost had me in a chokehold."
"But she didn't," He reminded her, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "I'll be there right with you. I won't let anything happen to you."
"You have to, Simon," She frowned, fighting fresh tears. "You can't let them know your feelings for me. You have to let them take me. If I'm who he wants, then you have to let him."
"Who?"
"I-I really shouldn't be talking to you about this..."
"You almost did already. You babble when you're anxious, and that's surprising."
She sighed heavily, "Graves. Kate told me she did some digging-"
"That's a dirty job..."
"Tell me about it. She uncovered a Black Bag operation done several months ago. Long story short, Graves and Shepherd were behind it."
"Let me guess: the missiles we're after were part of that operation?"
She didn't reply, and her silence was the answer. "When I go back, shit's going to go down with me and him. God knows what he's going to do to me."
"Not a fuckin' chance."
"There needs to be a chance, Simon. I'm probably a capture or kill mission to them now."
"If he wants you for intel, you're too valuable to neutralize. He'll try to interrogate you. If he can get his hands on you, but I doubt that."
"I'll figure something out. I'll bullshit my way out of it if I have to. Wouldn't be the first time I've been held against my will."
"And you think none of us will come to get you if that happens?" He scoffed. "You've got to be out of your fuckin' mind."
"Maybe I am, Simon."
Their tones began to get heated between each other. He was fighting so damn hard to keep his emotions at bay, but she made it really hard for him to keep his mouth shut.
"Maybe I'm so far out of my mind that I won't need saving. Maybe he'll just get his intel out of me then kill me before anything could happen. He'll bury me just like he and Shepherd did when they buried the crime months ago."
He used his hand to capture her chin, forcing her to look into his eyes. He could tell that she was scared. Terrified, even, but she was just like him - she was trying her best to keep it hidden from him. Tears filled her eyes as she felt like she was going to say goodbye to him, remembering their brief time together as she felt she'd never get to experience it again. "You don't need to be talking like that. You're not in the right mindset."
"When am I ever?" She scoffed.
He then propped himself up on his elbow, looking down at her, forcing himself to look into her eyes, "You are when those boots are on the ground. You have a coldness to those eyes that gets the job done, but when you're home, they turn to something that has so much life behind them. Don't think I don't notice, because I do. When I see you look at those mountains or when you're around your horse. Fuck, even when you're with me, you're alive. You've got what I wished I could have. That's why I lo- enjoy being around you so much."
"Don't say it, Simon," She cried, not wanting to accept that a man she began to grow towards so much housed the same feelings. "Don't say it unless it saves me."
A slight smile spread across his lips, "I can do that," He whispered, planting his lips on hers. He wanted to reassure her the best that he could. "Don't let your mind take you to your thoughts. It'll get you in trouble. That's not the Kiera I know."
"I can't help but be weak sometimes, Simon."
"That's okay. Neither can I."
»»-------¤-------««
Monday morning came as Kiera parked her truck in the parking garage of the airport that would take them back to Mexico. She put the truck in park, pulling out her phone to text her mother one last time before her flight:
Tumblr media
She waited a few moments before her phone buzzed,
Tumblr media
She sighed, smiling down at the message before turning her phone off and locking it away in the console. "Get your head right, love." Simon reminded her, reaching his hand over the console.
"Please tell me you brought my iPod."
He smirked, patting the pocket of his jeans, "Fully charged. Figured you'd want it."
"Oh, I will," She breathed a laugh. "Can you promise me something?"
"What's that?"
"Promise me that we'll come back... the both of us."
He locked his eyes with hers, a futuristic smirk spreading on his lips as he brought her knuckles to his lips, resting them on his chin before pressing a warm kiss to her calloused skin. "Through hell or high water, love."
