it was another hectic day for malleus. though he was not in the briar valley palace being overwhelmed with plans for his birthday, he was still busy in night raven college. lilia was in the room with him, smiling at the fae as he greeted, “happy birthday, malleus! come, the guests await.”

the diasomnia dormitory head followed his guardian’s request, trailing behind him as they both went to the lounge. the celebration was splendid, to say the least. he received gifts and was greeted by students he never personally interacted with before – though they were steps away from him while delivering their greetings.

the platinum outfit he wore for this year’s birthday theme made him stand out – quite so, as he is the birthday boy. the interview was something he enjoyed as well; having deuce as his interviewer made it even more pleasant.

 the celebration was nearing its end, and while he was grateful, he cannot help but feel as if something is missing. his eyes wandered around the lounge, looking for a certain person but to no avail. lilia, who stood beside him, intuitively knew who he was looking for, merely smiling, and not saying anything.

once the celebration ended, the rest of the guests returned to their respective rooms and dorms, leaving only lilia, silver, and sebek in the lounge with malleus, sorting through the gifts. while doing so, the young fae’s gaze landed on a green envelope, opening the letter as he did not recall who handed it to him.

‘to my dearest,

pleasant salutations, my love. today marks the day of your birth, and i am more than happy to wish you a happy birthday. thank you for the beautiful memories you have made with me, and i hope we can continue to make more memories together.

you might wonder about my whereabouts throughout the whole party. in all honesty, i was preparing your gift. once you have received this letter, it is time for you to take a moment to indulge in my present made for you and only you.

a smile ghosted over malleus’ lips, chuckling to himself as he was intrigued by your behaviour. you would go as far as putting him to a test and sending him out on a scavenger hunt, searching for objects with nothing but riddles as a clue.

“how amusing,” spoke malleus with that amused smile on his face, “quite creative, however.” lilia peeked at the letter before chuckling and gently patting his shoulder, “what are you waiting for? time is ticking!”

and with that, malleus went around the dormitory in search of something that stayed bright and romantic amongst the thorny bushes. he has gotten his first clue. thorny bushes must mean the location is in the garden of diasomnia, no? however, they do have flower bushes and whatnot, so what exactly is he supposed to find?

still, he went to the dormitory garden, eyeing all the colourful bushes before his eyes landed on the thorn bushes nearby. nothing seemed out of place, but as he stepped closer, a glowing red rose hid within the bush.

“ah, is this the item i’m supposed to find?” mumbled malleus as he quickly grabbed the rose, the thorns not pricking him as he used his magic to avoid damage. upon contact, the rose glowed even more before disappearing into thin air, and what came in replacement was a quick reveal of the words, ‘turn around.’

and so, he did. the young fae turned around with a puzzled expression before his eyes landed on you standing there with a smile. how did he not notice you? surely, he could have heard your footsteps, no? his puzzled expression morphed into a shocked one before he smiled at you, noticing your arms tucked behind you as if you were hiding something.

“and what are you hiding, dearest?” asked the male with a smug smile.

“oh, nothing~” you replied, “close your eyes.”

malleus raised a brow, eyeing you for a moment before complying with your request, closing his eyes without another word as he waited for your action. he heard a soft twinkle as you spoke, “okay, you can open them…”

once he opened his eyes, you stood with your arms out, a snow globe rested on your palm as the miniature scenery had two dragons that look identical, but one seemed to be a baby dragon holding an ice cream cone. his eyes widened as you held it out to him with a shy smile, “i made this for you…”

made?

“made?” asked malleus. you nodded as you avoided his gaze, thinking he might not like it as you mumbled a response, “yes, i don’t have much to offer, but i am skilled with arts and crafts…” you eyed the snow globe again, shaking it a little to make it snow with a soft twinkle.

malleus smiled softly as he watched you shake the globe before gently grabbing it from you, looking at it closely as he realised the dragon looks like him. “a personalised snow globe… thank you, f/n…”

“happy birthday, malleus,” you greeted with a smile, the same smile that he had always loved, the same smile that brightened his lonely days, the same smile that greets him every morning. his eyes stayed on you as he looked at you like a lovestruck puppy, wishing for this moment to never end.

an eternity with you and those he holds dear is all that he asks for.

I find it endlessly hilarious that Rook Hunt invited Malleus to his birthday party and Malleus, guy who yearns to be included in stuff and to be invited, didn't go. To be fair, Malleus seems to find Rook annoying and Leona also didn't want to come though Ruggie was there for food. It's just funny that Malleus clearly has a bias and will not accept just ANY invitation.

Mally being like "only two people invite me anywhere 😔 (yuu and lilia)" when Rook Hunt is right there lol but then Malleus doesn't vibe with him so that's just how it is

it's a bit sad in some aspects as well, of course. Guy invites two of people he finds super interesting and they don't want to come but such is life. And then another who rejects the invitation probably for fear of further alienation.

Still, very funny to think about Malleus having such a clear bias

Imagine Malleus ignores the invitation to Rook's birthday and goes to hang out with Yuu instead only to find out Yuu was hanging out with Rook. Rook offers some of his favorite food to Yuu (liver pate, basically a creamy spread made from liver, usually some type of poultry, blended with spices like onions, garlic, herbs. It sounds like a meat dip basically, sounds good, spread on buttered toast, he says he doesn't often get have it because it has to be fresh to taste good so he's very happy to have some and offers yuu some).

Anyways i feel like Malleus would get so peeved and put out when he finds out his fave was hanging with Rook and Rook shared food with them at his party. He's extra annoyed with Rook now lol

Malleus may want to be invited to thing but even he has standards. 😑

But yeah, I feel kind of bad for Rook, People just don't seem to be able to handle the guy's silliness and whimsy. He's sweet and would be all happy likely with any gift you end up bringing too.

At first glance shy and anxious,this youngman is not so joy and energetic as his teammates,but he's know by his talent on different fine arts or the jewels designed by him but when someone get closer to him can see how loving and nice he is

With the people he trust or get enoughly close to him Ayame is more different,smile more and make jokes and acts in a more gentle and outgoing way, if someone see him dancing and how he acts when he do it can describe him as "flirty and seductive but gentle and smiling",that behavior is more seeing by kids, Ayame have a "motherly' feeling on him that project with people younger than him and children are always around him, looking for feel the affectiom that Ayame give them

Uhhh...... Lemme count rq. 1800 on the frantics (not distinguishing between my writing and my friends' writing), and then 7200 from whatevers in the obsidian document I opened. Theres more on scrivener and random sheets of paper, but my laptop is slow and I don't have time to find them all :(

Cherio Lore :( I can write a synopsis of it, but I really want to organically present the ideas through typical novel writing as practice before I really write my own stories. Alas, idk what happens in the middle (as always)

Abstract descriptions! I hope, at least. I love writing them!!

Dialogue fs. Idk how people talk. Also, sentence variation. I'm a predictable guy and I have my favorite words!!

18. thoughts on dialogue in another language?

The thing is, if it's in a different script to the language you're writing in (for example, English and Japanese), there's not a way for the reader to read it, yk? And idk if there's a way to organically integrate a translation. Even if your reader isn't supposed to know what they're saying, what's the point in including the dialogue in the first place? You can just say they said something in Japanese. Unless it's assumed your reader knows the other language, then it adds some dramatic irony. Ofc, there's gonna be ways you can fit it in well since each situation is different, but I wouldn't add it explicitly in quotations, per se. This is coming from a semi-bilingual language nerd semi-studying to be an editor (aka, don't take it to heart bc I'm not a professional)

Ezhno’s birthday is coming up, so it’s got me wondering how he, Kee and the Assassi’s celebrate their birthdays (the assassi’s can either be going into it individually or together as a group)

Ooo, this is a good one:

Ezhno used to not celebrate his birthday, especially after his father died, but after being in the clan awhile, he did start being a little more open about it. Getting gifts always surprises him, he honestly expects nothing for his birthday.

Kee usually celebrates it with Conner and Lauren, whether it's going out to eat, or just hanging out at the park, they're seen together for at least a meal, before going their seperate ways. With the clan, he'll want to either be by himself, or just those close to him (namely Ezhno, Violin, Accordion)

Riker and Malli celebrate their birthdays together! They're only a day apart (Malli being older), and just enjoy each other company. Since they were close friends in the past, this also was a money-saving issue for both families, and them being able to celebrate together (even if it was just a cake and home-cooked meal), they hate being apart for it. (Even after Malli went to the police academy, him and Riker found ways to see each other)

Joey didn't actually know her birthday for a while. Like, they knew it only came once a year, but never actually celebrated it on the same day. This did confuse her in the past, but it was later explained to her that they celebrated it when it was convenient. After joining The Assassi's, they make sure to celebrate it on her birthday, which gives it way more meaning to her.

Kyro likes being told a simple 'happy birthday', but that's pretty much all. They don't like huge parties or celebrations, but spending time around The Assassi's, and especially Joey, that in itself is enough for them. (Joey almost always gets them a little trinket for their birthday)

Marc is a family guy, I'll admit it for him. He'll try his best to visit his family in both Italy and Sweden, even if it isn't on his birthday. But, on the years he can't, he enjoys spending time with The Assassi's, as they've become a third family to him. (Yeah, a third family).

A little something Riker does for them all is what is called a 'weapon cleanup', in which he takes their weapons that morning, examin it, and basically makes sure its in a good position. If it needs cleaning or sharpening, he'll handle it that day, and if there's something damaged or nearly broken, he'll get it repaired. He doesn't do this with his own weapon, or Malli's once he joins, but he'll do it either the following week or the week before.

"Milord, Lady Malenia and Archcleric Perona have arrived bearing gifts."

Almost knocking her over on cue, Perona about bursts into the room, an enormous basket big enough to be soup for Godfrrey himself in her arms. Pitter-pattering in a zig-zag and trying not to fall, she's scrambling to find him until Malenia enters the room. Effortlessly the swordswoman lifts the basket from her so she can maintain her balance, patting her head with a free hand.

Half of her body glowing with Miquella's influence -they've learned how to talk with perfect synergy - she looks up to Godwyn with an enormous grin.

"Happy birthday, Winnie!" And the glow fades, leaving just her. "Mallie said-"

"I do not answer to... 'Mallie' ..." Malenia sighs, turning a bit to hide her bashfulness.

"-today's your birthday! So with her help I prepared you some gifts! And look!"

She twirls around, dressed in a variant of her robes that bear the Rune of Death that make her look more like an incense girl at a funeral procession there to give a peaceful sendoff. Her hair's in pigtails, held together by silver cylindric decorations.

"Mallie, can you help please?" She asks politely.

"... Very well." Malenia shakes her head, presenting the basket with a smile.

Inside is some folded up robes, clearly made by someone familiar with how big demigods are, some sweets, and some bottles of perfume as well as bathing serums. What stands out though is a strong looking tankard with a ribbon tied around the handle. Engraved on it are the words, "Best Big Brother Ever"

Godwyn didn't have time to finish that thought before being met with his sisters. Seeing his baby sister teetering around with a basket much bigger than her own frame was honestly adorable, if not a very funny to watch.

Godwyn's loungeroom was already riddled with various gifts, letters, and offerings from followers, friends, and various outsiders who are watching his cause. Quickly, he sent aside the 'thank you' letters he was writing to make room for what's to come.

He managed to retain a smile throughout the entire scene, even if there was the slightest wince at 'happy birthday'. He would like it to be considered different from just a birthday, but that meant he had to explain how the resurrection worked. He didn't feel like dampening the upbeat mood of his baby sister, so birthday it is, then.

He admired the gifts they had brought. Truly, they were luxuries that could only be found at the Haligtree. The thought was nostalgic, really, the bittersweet memories of receiving treasured gifts while writing back and forth to his runaway siblings.

"I thank thou dearly for all these gifts. It warms me to see both of you here on this day." He smiled, standing up to offer a hug for Perona to climb into. Picking Perona up like a cat to enjoy a hug from her, and reaches for Malenia to complete the group hug.

To Be A Cat

This thought wouldn’t leave my head for the past week, and I eventually decided to write it rather than draw it. It’s probably a bit OOC but I hope you like it ^^

Henry tested the drawers one at a time, hoping at least one might hold some clues as to what happened to the studio. He’d searched the rest of the department as thoroughly as he could, until finally only Sammy’s office was left. 

Some part of him felt wrong searching through an old friend’s belongings, but he could only put it off for so long until he found himself rummaging through shelves and stacks of old papers. Finally, only the desk was left. And with left, he struck gold: in the upper left drawer he found an audio log. A slip of paper taped over it read “Wally, Matt Cat” in Sammy’s handwriting. He hesitated for just a second before pressing play.

The tape crackled to life, and Wally’s static-y voice came through.

“Hey, Muffin, could you help me and Sammy with something? It won’t take long.”

The reply was too muffled to be make out, but Henry gathered from the pet name it was Matt. On the recording Wally dramatically cleared his throat and continued, taking on the accent of a radio announcer.

“So, all you folks at home wanna know the proper way to hold a cat? Been holdin’ him and carryin’ him around like a baby and now you wanna know if there’s other ways? Well the first thing you gotta know, is you gotta squish that cat! Hold him close to your body and give him a squish. I’ve got my cat with me, you wanna squish him in a hug, not hard enough to hurt him.” His voice dropped in volume for a moment as he and Matt exchanged a quick “I love you”.

“You can pick him up or use a towel, me? I’ve got this coat here, we’re gonna--!” Wally’s voice was cut off by a surprised yelp from Matt.

“--pick him up and squish! That! Cat!”

“You know, if you just wanted a hug you could have just asked--!”

“A’right we’re just gonna set you back down here,” Wally said, back in his normal voice, before switching back to radio announcer. “Another way to pick up your cat!”

“You’re keeping me trapped in your coat I take it?” Matt asked.

“Yes. Now another way is the football carry!”

“What?”

(At this point Henry could make out Sammy’s stifled snickering in the recording.)

“You just scoop up your cat--”

“Wally, wait--”

“--scoop him right up, tuck him nicely under your arm, hold him close to you so he feels safe--”

“Dad, were you in on this?”

At this point Sammy was openly laughing, with a few giggles on and off from Matt and Wally. Henry couldn’t help but laugh with them, picturing Matt wrapped up like a sausage in Wally’s coat and being carried that way through the studio.

“--hand under the butt so he feels supported--”

“Walter Franks!” Matt gasped, scandalized, though Henry could tell from the tone it was feigned.

“--now run away with him!”

“Wally! I’m gonna get you back for this! Both of you!”

The sounds of footsteps and intermingled laughter, presumably Wally running off with his fiance, faded out. Sammy, too, laughed for a few seconds more, and gave a light sigh before the recording clicked off, having reached its end.

Henry himself was coming down from a laughing fit, tears pricking at the corners of his eyes as he set the audio log back down. He found himself unable to walk away for several minutes after that, sitting down at the desk with a heavy sigh. Eventually, he picked the log back up and carried it with him as he left the Music Department, holding it as if he could hold the three of them right then and there.
